‘A Chemehuevi Song’ Nature lecture with Clifford Trafzer

oin the Palm Springs Public Library on Wednesday, Jan. 4 for a Nature Lecture in which Clifford Trafzer, Professor of History, UC Riverside, will present his book “A Chemehuevi Song.” The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. in The Learning Center (TLC). This program is presented in partnership with the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park. “A Chemehuevi Song” (2015) is the first book-length history of the TwentyNine Palms Band of Mission Indians and traces the tribe’s history and cultural practices through individual and family stories. Earlier works on Chemehu-

evi people briefly mentioned the Twenty-Nine Palms tribe, which lived along the Colorado River until the mid-19th century. Trafzer began working with Chemehuevi people from four reservations in 1997 at the invitation of Twenty-Nine Palms elders. He gathered dozens of oral histories as well as thousands of pages of historical documents, maps, books, articles and photographs. Mr. Trafzer has spent nearly 20 years working with Chemehuevi people, especially members of the Twenty-Nine Palms Tribe, to research the study. He is the Distinguished Professor of History
and Rupert Costo Chair in American Indian Affairs at the University of California, Riverside where he has taught for the past 25 years. Festival to screen “The Sense of an Ending” on opening night
he 28th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) announced that the festival’s opening night will be the World Premiere screening of “The Sense of an Ending,” directed by Ritesh Batra on Thursday, Jan. 5. The festival will close with “The Comedian,” directed by Taylor Hackford on Sunday, Jan. 15. The Festival will screen 190 films from 72 countries, including 58 premieres (Nine World, Five International, 20 North American and 24 U.S.) from Jan. 2-16. The complete line-up including a focus on cinema from Poland, Premieres, New Voices/New Visions competition, Modern Masters, True Stories, After Dark and more were also announced, in addition to the Awards Buzz program. PSIFF will open with the World Premiere of the CBS Film “The Sense of an Ending,” directed by Ritesh Batra. The film stars Jim Broadbent and Charlotte Rampling who team up with the director of The Lunchbox in this mesmerizing adaptation of Julian Barnes’s acclaimed novel about time, memory, jealousy, and the lies we tell ourselves to survive. The film also stars Harriet Walter, Freya Mavor, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Dockery, Matthew Goode and Billy Howle. The film opens in NY and LA on March 10. Closing the festival will be the Sony Pictures Classics film The Comedian, directed by Taylor Hackford. Robert De Niro stars as Jackie Burke, a bitter, angry insult comic who was once the popular
star of a TV sitcom, and is now trying to claw his way back on the stand-up circuit, one scabrous joke at a time. The film’s supporting cast features Leslie Mann, Danny Devito, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Keitel, Patti LuPone and Edie Falco. “I couldn’t be more proud of this year’s lineup. The programming team has managed to pull together a plethora of different viewpoints in storytelling from around the world in hopes of generating great discussion sorely needed in these divisive times,” says Artistic Director Michael Lerman. “Between the 42 Foreign Language Oscar submissions, each selected to represent their own country in a year that’s more competitive than ever, to the poignant work being made by Modern Masters like Kim Ki-Duk, Ken Loach, Feng Xiaogang and Steve James, to the ever-surprising first and second features in our New Voices/New Visions competition like the unmissable Zoology and Kati Kati, the festival is jam-packed with gems. lizards, geckos, spiders, owls, jackrabbits, snakes and maybe a coyote. We will use black lights to seek out the various night creatures inhabiting our desert. This is a family event. Rancho Mirage theatre company to present six more scripts to their award-winning seventh season By Gary Walker For Desert Entertainer

eaturing scripts from the Coachella Valley to Kansas City, Rancho Mirage’s Script2Stage2Screen th atre company’s 7th award-winning season has already produced three crowd pleasers (“Life Without,” “Donor 63125” and “A Modest Proposal”), and they are planning six more by the end of the season in May:
• Friday, Jan. 13: “Inside Dumont a Novel” by Michael Craft is this season’s Book Launch choice. Artistic Director Gina Bikales and playwright Craft will perform “In the Fridge,” a staged reading from his book of linked short stories. Craft will be available for audience Q&A and book signings. Proceeds from book sales will go to the theatre company. Michael Craft is the author of thirteen published novels, with another soon to come, and two produced plays, including “Photo Flash,” presented in Palm Desert by the Joslyn Players in 2008. He holds an MFA in creative writing from Antioch University, Los Angeles, and has lived in Rancho Mirage since moving to the desert from Wisconsin in 2005. • Feb. 10-11: “Exit Strategies,” by Vicki Vodrey, directed by Gina Bikales, who says of the play: “One doesn’t think of end-of -life discussions and comedy in the same breath. That is why we loved this play. Expect the unexpected as friends gather to push a blind date on an unsuspecting man and bring a new member into their very special group.”
Vicki Vodrey is a playwright and the owner of Lot in Life Productions. Her play, “Sue Aside…” premiered at the KC Fringe Festival 2015 and was produced by Phoenix KC Theatre. Vicki’s play, “Hard Day’s Night” was chosen for the New York International Fringe Festival 2015 and was produced by her company in August. Last year, “The Frowning Vajayjays of Shady Pines” was selected by Script2Stage2Screen for their 20142015 season. • March 10-11: “Final Arrangements,” by Michelle Tyrene Johnson, directed by Gina Bikales. Two women meet at a funeral home to make burial plans for their husbands. Pity the poor funeral director who must deal with these two and still keep his dignity. Bikales calls it “comedy at its best.” • April 14-15: “The Park Bench, by Denny Dey, directed by Gina Bikales. One man, One woman. Two broken down cars and a park bench. Who ever said the art of conversation was dead. Bikales says, “This short play runs like greased lightning and will have you laughing out loud.” • May 12-13: “The Fox in the Hen House,” by Jason Hull, who also directs this story of a boarding house for “ladies of a certain age.” An untimely tragedy complicates Mom’s life more than she’d like “and threatens to jeopardize her future in her apartment. When her daughter and friends get involved, they complicate the situation even more. Will the cranky old landlady win? “Hull’s zany comedies are always a delight,” adds Bikales. alm Desert’s First Weekend kicks off the new year with a series of great events and festivals. Mark your calendars for the inaugural LiveWell Festival, “The Desert’s Health + Wellness Day at the Park,” the debut of 18 new sculptures on El Paseo, public art tours, hikes, classic cars, ArtWalk, Galen First Fridays and so much more. The LiveWell Festival, the First Weekend feature event, is set for Jan. 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Civic Center Park. H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation grant helps expand mobile art program A $25,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation will purchase a van for Old Town Artisan Studio, Inc., which is the latest recipient of a Coachella Valley Spotlight award. More than 8,000 people, including groups from special education classes, special needs homes, senior centers and more come to OTAS throughout each year. The hands-on experiences are therapeutic and often expose participants to something completely new. “Old Town Artisan Studio is a place where people of all ages can experiences the healing power of art,” said Victory Grund, who founded the organization with her husband Richard in 2009. The couple envisioned the concept when they realized that funding for art programs had been slashed from school budgets and many private social service agencies. Old Town Artisan Studio is dedicated to providing positive art experiences for all Coachella Valley residents despite age, disability or financial disadvantage. Pratt and Lawrence Add Heat to Mushy Sci-Fi Romance of ‘Passengers’

A
gigantic rocket ship on a 120-year journey to a faraway space colony has a glitch mid-route, mistakenly waking up one—and only one—of its 5,000 passengers from suspended-animation hibernation early. Ninety years early. And once your personalized alarm clock goes off on this intergalactic cruise, there’s no way to hit the snooze and go back to deep sleep—you’re up. That’s what happens, alas, to Jim Preston (Chris Pratt), who awakes to find himself all alone on a big, spinning luxury cruise liner of a spaceship auto-piloted to a lush new world, set to arrive…well, a couple of decades now after he’s dead. Jim at first explores the ship and avails himself of all its amenities (holographic dance-offs, no lines in the food court, great robotic restaurant service). He finds a “companion” in the lounge’s android bartender, Arthur (Michael Sheen from

TV’s Masters of Sex). But he’s smitten when he catches a glimpse of one of the other hibernating passengers, a writer named Aurora Lane (Jennifer Lawrence). Weighing the moral and ethical considerations against his own crushing loneliness, Jim eventually makes the decision to rouse Aurora from her hibernation—without telling her he did so. What she doesn’t know can’t hurt her, right? Right??? The starship in Passengers runs on a whirring nuclear reactor. But the movie itself is powered by two of Hollywood’s hottest, most likeable, bankable stars, and the film’s storyline bends around them and the heat they generate. There’s a genuinely creepy, unnerving nugget of a tale—of obsession, desperation and survival—in Passengers about what might happen under the futuristic circumstances it depicts, but it mostly gets lost in the sweet, sci-fi mush—and rush—of its intergalactic romance. Things get better for Jim, then worse—

much worse. He grows a beard. He shaves off his beard. Aurora and Jim walk among the stars—a big-ticket “shore excursion”—and make out in spacesuits. Aurora laughs. Aurora cries. Aurora rages. Aurora attacks Jim. Aurora swims—a lot. She gets trapped in a big, floating water “bubble” when the ship’s artificial gravity goes out. Norwegian director Morten Tyldum, nominated for an Oscar for The Imitation Game, creates a space-station world, and an atmosphere, that feels like a crosspollination of a Carnival Cruise, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Robinson Crusoe and The Twilight Zone. He pays attention to small details and never lets his “big” space movie get overrun and overblown with special effects. Another big-name actor, also awoken early by a system malfunction, makes a late appearance, mainly to sound the alarm that things have really taken a turn for the worse. Can Jim and Aurora right the ship—and realign their own stars?
“Lay some bartender wisdom on me,” Jim implores Arthur at one point. “I feel like I’m lost in space here.” After riding along in Passengers’ interstellar love boat for two rocky hours, you may agree that some course correction might have indeed been helpful—especially when this rocket lands on one of the cheesiest spaceball wrap-up endings of anything this year.
