T
opgolf, a Texas-based multi-tiered sports entertainment franchise, announced the opening of its new Roseville facility last week at a special media sneak preview of what the complex has to offer. The first of its kind in California, Topgolf Roseville hosts putting bays with a full bar and gourmet food table service, an expansive full-range putting green with computer-monitored games that offer a variety of scoring options, and video games and live music on select nights. The company opened its new complex Sept. 2 at 1700 Freedom Way. “We are super excited to be here in California,” Director of Operations for Topgolf Roseville Brian Van Der Meer said. “We’re even more excited to have created over 500 jobs in this community.

I’m really excited to see the public in our home.” The new location is Topgolf ’s 29th venue; the company is expanding by approximately seven to ten venues annually and will soon open an Australian location, according to Senior Communications Specialist Morgan Wallace. The golfing bays were packed with media and guests eager to try the wide range of drivers, putters and woods suited for various distances and targets among an assortment of near- and far-scored golfing holes to shoot for; along with the delicious array of food prepared fresh on location. The golfing bays were full, but Topgolf ’s sheer size — 65,000 square feet — ensured that it never felt overcrowded.

Pretty much anybody can come to Topgolf and enjoy it.” Bobby Pack, Topgolf Marketing Manager
Topgolf employees emphasized that the venue was for everyone, not just golfers. With video game options in the lower level of the complex, a full-spectrum menu and live musical entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, Topgolf is trying to cater to the whole community as a golf-centric entertainment center. “Pretty much anybody can come to Topgolf and enjoy it,” Marketing Manager Bobbi Pack said. “If you’re an avid golfer, you’re going to love it because it’s a great driving and practice range; it’s a great atmosphere. Some of the people that come in here are not avid golfers and they just want to have a great time and hang out with their friends and family, and there you go! continued on page 10

We also have people that just kind of want to find out what the sport is about, they don’t really know golf; and that’s a great way to come in and check it out. It’s exciting to be introducing the game of golf to a lot of people.” A partner with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Topgolf is trying to take an active role in the community; the new center in Roseville will offer 20-percent discounts for active-duty military, firefighters and police, and will also offer free facility use for high school golf teams year round. “The response has been phenomenal,” Pack said. “Everyone has been supportive and the community is really excited about us coming. They’re excited about the jobs we’ve brought into Roseville and the revenue coming in, and they’re really excited about the fact that there’s going to be a new entertainment facility.”

GO BIG: Anthem FC founder and owner Mo Ruiz began the now highly-successful futsal organization as a clothing line late last year. Photo by Steven Wilson
FUTSAL FRENZY Roseville’s Anthem FC earns first pro team in the region By Steven Wilson
O
ne of the fastest growing sports in the world has taken off in Roseville. Futsal, a game derived from the sport of soccer, incorporates 30 million people worldwide according to the Professional Futsal League (PFL). With aggressive tactics, smaller fields (hardsurface courts) and technical training, the game also often features more scoring than traditional soccer. The goals and the ball are both smaller in size and the ball is heavier and harder to kick, but that creates a welcoming challenge to a number of athletes. It’s so popular even Shark Tank entrepreneur Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, took a principal ownership stake in the PFL earlier this year. “It’s the fastest growing sport in the world,” explained Mo Ruiz, who helped kick start futsal locally. “There have been other organizations in Rocklin competing in futsal, but not how we do it.” Ruiz helped build Anthem FC, which began in December of 2015 as a lifestyle clothing brand. But as the founder of Mad Skillz soccer, Ruiz, opened his 2,000-foot Roseville soccer

facility for futsal training in August last year and saw his business skyrocket. “We wanted to unite the community of soccer, all in one place,” Ruiz recalled. “So we came up with a clothing line which everyone can wear and they can represent the love of the game, together. “But nobody was doing Futsal like the way we wanted to do it, so we held open tryouts in late December, after Christmas. We weren’t expecting to have a ton of interest, but it blew up overnight. We went from zero to six teams, which was over 100 kids, in one weekend.” Fast forward eight months and Anthem FC is currently sanctioned by U.S. Futsal, the lone governing body

in the United States. The organization has teams for 7- to 15-year-olds and operates a brand new pro team out of the Roseville Community Center. “Our pro team competed in the NPFL (National Premier Futsal League) this year (2016), but we’re joining Major League Futsal next season (2017),” explained Ruiz, who is a member of the team. “We’re coached by Alex Butterfield, who’s also our Youth Technical Director. Anthem plans on offering amateur and pro contracts next year.” Anthem FC pro standout Ryan Palmbaum — a junior at Whitney High School — was one of 12 athletes asked to compete for the U.S. Youth Futsal under-18 National Team that traveled to
Colombia in early August for a series of international friendlies. “He’s very talented, and he’s playing on the U16 squad as well,” Ruiz pointed out. “Ryan’s being scouted by Georgetown, Stanford and so many other high-level D-I clubs. He just recently went to Italy to play with another club as well.” Ruiz knows a thing or two about playing at the highest level. The executive director of Anthem FC grew up playing soccer and spent eight years with the San Luis Obispo Soccer Club. After one year overseas, he returned to California to join the Sacramento Knights for the 2001 season. Ruiz then spent six seasons continued on page 14

in the Central California Soccer League with two different programs. He has since transitioned his skills to a futsal court and currently plays for his own club, Anthem FC. He has eight years of experience training kids in both sports and has been involved in elite technical training for over five years. “When we started, our focus was teaching our players the technical skills they needed to become better players and to be more confident on the field,” Ruiz added. “But when we organized the teams to get them ready for the Northwest Regional Tournament, we found out we needed more strategy, so we implemented that.” Despite only technical training and not much of a gameplan, Anthem FC’s under-10 girls squad captured first place at the Northwest Regional Tournament before taking home top honors in the 2016 Copa Cabana Futsal Tournament in Huntington Beach. “It was the coolest thing to go down to SoCal and just wipe out the competition,” Ruiz said. “I was like, ‘Wow, we’re doing something right.” Ruiz is operating both businesses at a high level. Granite Bay Football Club defender and midfielder Jacob Weil, who’s part of the 2002 A Team, has been attending sessions at Mad Skillz for a year and has witnessed the benefits. “You learn and work on your foot skills in compact areas,” Weil explained. “At Granite Bay, we are taught broad techniques for defense in spread out areas. So coming here has definitely paid off. I’m able to pick my head up and control the ball much better, rather than just kicking it.” Meanwhile, Anthem FC has grown from six teams to over 186 kids on ten teams in six months. But the organization is still looking to expand and has plans to create their own league right here in Roseville. “The next step is to grow and train more players and expand their possibilities,” Ruiz explained. “We want the kids to be able to play anywhere in the country or around the world.” Interested players can visit anthemarmy.com.

BENEFITS OF FUTSAL
• Develops precise ball control and technical skills, and accurate and quick passing • Helps to develop creativity and decision-making • Develops skills required for soccer as well as other sports: balance, motor ability, agility and coordination, and quicker reflexes and awareness • Safer and more affordable than indoor soccer with walls — it can be played on a basketball court • Futsal eliminates injuries associated with wall collisions, and no slide tackles are allowed. The game is popular with children, teenagers, and adults of both genders • The game teaches control in fun, exciting, high-pressure situations.

Roseville-born SIGNS RECORD DEAL By Matt Kramer
Musicians originally from the city find success on the national stage.

October 2016
F
rontmen and brothers Liz Scarlett and Shazam Watkins are heading up a new-glam band called the Fame Riot, which just landed a major record deal. The formerly Roseville-based duo couldn’t be happier. The Fame Riot was signed to Another Century, one of three labels under Century Music Group and Sony. The band is known for neo-disco and party synth-pop stylings, combined with a self-aware aesthetic that takes tongue in cheek cues from the excesses of ‘80’s hair metal. It looks to create a raucous and exciting atmosphere. When this music hits the ears, it compels the feet to dance. Fans say, simply put, this is party music delivered straight up, no chaser. Reminiscent of The Darkness or a hyper-upbeat version of The Golden Pony, the Fame Riot delivers a mixture of fun music and well-placed purposeful falsetto, backed up by musical talent and a clear vision that makes this band work; at the same time there’s a subtle
wink and nod undercurrent throughout which indicates the band is entirely aware of the image it’s crafting. The band’s knowing, intentional excess is illustrated perfectly by its new video single, ‘Heart Stray,’ which is being pushed by Another Century on multiple formats. Though the band has a recognizable image, when it comes to defining their sound, Scarlett is hesitant to be pigeonholed. “I think for any artist it can be difficult to find a genre that you’re bracketed in,” Scarlett observed. “More important to us than genre is the vibe; the sound and the influences that go into the music.” Watkins agreed with Scarlett’s assessment, echoing that the feel of the music is the most important part of their art. According to Watkins, the ambience created by the Fame Riot comes from a place of raw emotion, which taps into something inherent in

There’s very much a lot of positivity in our music. It’s real and it comes from a place of real emotion. It’s positive, but I think people can feel the truth of it. It’s more about truth than it is about what we’re supposed to sound like to other people; you’re able to dance to it.” Shazam Watkins, Fame Riot
the human psyche, and goes beyond mere escapism or dance-club fantasy. When asked what defines the Fame Riot’s sound and where inspiration comes from, Watkins didn’t hesitate to answer in an assumed but surprisingly well-executed faux British accent. “A nasty beat,” Watkins said. “There’s very much a lot of positivity in our music. It’s real and it comes from a place of real emotion. It’s positive, but I think people can feel the truth of it. It’s more about truth than it is about what
we’re supposed to sound like to other people; you’re able to dance to it.” The Fame Riot began in Roseville where musicians Scarlett and Watkins frequented local staples like Bloom Coffee shop. After playing the suburban circuit at Club Retro and the Boardwalk, they shared the stage at Launch Festival with !!! (Chk Chk Chk) and played shows at Harlow’s in the 2000s. In late 2010, the band relocated to Tacoma, Washington, where it’s since been on a rocketing trajectory of
success. Though based out of Tacoma for nearly six years, the brothers expressed a wish to return to Northern California in the future. “Granite Bay’s like our secret haven,” Scarlett said. “It’s like heaven. At Folsom Lake we like to climb the trees when the water’s high and jump off naked. If its Folsom Pond and the water’s low we just suntan naked; that’s all we can do.” A return tour to the Roseville and Sacramento area is something they would both like to do, although nothing is on the books at present as the band cultivates their newly signed record deal. More information on The Fame Riot and their music can be found on iTunes, Bandcamp, Facebook atfacebook.com/TheFameRiot, and online at thefameriot.com.

aspberries are still in season! Lucky for us these small sweet, tart treats are still tasting delicious like candy. Some of my closest friends were recently in South Korea and because they know my love for food, as a gift I was given some petite colorful dishes. I was so inspired by the vibrancy of these dishes that I wanted to make a refreshing beverage inspired by color and flavor. Red is for raspberries, yellow is for Lemon, and green is for mint. The outcome was a fizzy pink lemonade that was light and wonderfully refreshing, perfect for sharing during the last few warm nights before the frost is upon us.
Fizzy Pink Lemonade INGREDIENTS: 1 bottle of bubbly pink moscato ½ cup of limoncello 2 cups of soda water 8 leaves of fresh mint 1 fresh lemon slice 1 cup of frozen raspberries Ice DIRECTIONS: 1. Pour the pink moscato, limoncello, and soda water into a pitcher. 2. Add the fresh mint, lemon, and frozen raspberries. 3. Stir with a wooden spoon. 4. Once the ingredients are all mixed, top off with ice, serve, and enjoy,

red RASPBERRY
Cherry Clafoutis E
ver have those days when you really want to impress company, but you don’t want to spend 8 hours baking? I recently had this experience and that is when the French came through for me. Clafoutis…is a strange word that is bound to get a few head turn and glazed looks of confusion. However, it is not only a blast to say, but also really enjoyable to make. To break it down it is basically a fruit custard tart. I used raspberries and dark cherries that were then surrounded by a sturdy yet moist custard base. This dessert can also be a great addition to any brunch. Its eggy middle could definitely qualify as a breakfast dish with a side of fruit, if you really use your imagination. Bottom line it was easy and really tasty and that is all I wanted to achieve.
Red Raspberry Cherry Clafoutis INGREDIENTS: 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter Granulated sugar for dusting the baking dish ½ cup of raspberries ½ cup of pitted dark cherries 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 lemon, used for zest and juice ½ cup of granulated sugar ½ teaspoon almond extract 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 large eggs 1 cup of almond milk ½ cup of heavy whipping cream ¾ cup of gluten free all purpose flour Pinch of salt Optional: powdered sugar for dusting
DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Butter a round pie pan or individual baking dishes and lightly sprinkle with sugar. 3. In a medium mixing bowl combine the raspberries and cherries with lemon zest, lemon juice, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar. Gently toss and set aside. 4. In a blender combine ½ cup granulated sugar, almond and vanilla extracts, eggs, almond milk, heavy cream, flour, and salt. Blend until well combined and frothy. 5. Place the fruit mixture on the bottom of the baking dish and gently pour the custard combination over the fruit. 6. Bake for 50 minutes. If still very loose in the middle bake for an additional 10 minutes. 7. Cool for 20 min and serve warm with powdered sugar, whipped cream, or even ice cream and enjoy!

Good Golly,
Miss Molly Ringwald! Famous Roseville native returns home for concert By MATTHEW WHITLEY
W
hile people around the world know Molly Ringwald best as the quintessential teen from her work in the classic 1980s John Hughes trio of films, “Sixteen Candles,” “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink,” the 48-year-old Roseville native has been singing her entire life. Molly cut her first record at the age of 6, when she sang with her father, jazz pianist Bob Ringwald. She would get her big break in a 1978 West Coast production of “Annie,” leading eventually to her turn on the hit TV series, “The Facts of Life.” She left after the first season and moved onto movies, headlining a string of successful films and eventually gracing the cover of Time magazine as

the teen queen of cinema. Since those years, Ringwald has gone on to star in films, television (“The Stand,” “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”) and Broadway (“Cabaret,” “Sweet Charity”), and authored two books (“When It Happens to You”). Jazz, however, has been Molly’s true love, and in 2013 the singer realized a lifelong dream and recorded her debut album, “Except Sometimes.” On the album, Ringwald covers songs from the great American songbook, as well as more recent songs like Stephen Sondheim’s “Sooner or Later” from the film “Dick Tracy,” and a jazz cover of Simple Mind’s “Don’t You Forget About Me,” the theme song from “The
Breakfast Club” — a subtle nod to her teen film oeuvre. Now married and a mother of three, Ringwald is choosy about the work she does and the time it will take away from her family. But as she told Roseville Magazine during a phone interview in August from her home in New York City, she found time to record a new album, “Molly Ringwald: Live at Birdland,” perform over 200 shows in seven countries and, most recently, work on the film “King Cobra” with James Franco and Alicia Silverstone. She concluded Rocklin’s summer concert series in Quarry Park with a performance on Sept. 17, featuring her father as a guest vocalist and an opening act from Peter Petty Revue.
A conversation with molly ringwald We’re excited you’re coming back to the Roseville/Rocklin area to do the show. Yeah, I hear that the new amphitheater is great. What do you have planned for the concert? Well, I’m going to be with my fans and you know we just recorded a live album at Birdland (a legendary New York Jazz nightclub) here in New York, so we’re going to be performing the songs that are on that album. Unfortunately we’re still mixing it, so it’s not going to be available for sale, but we’re going to do that set. Did you write any of the material on the new album? You know it’s all pretty much from the great American songbook, but there’s a few songs in there that are that are more contemporary. But no, I didn’t write them – I just interpret them. I was curious – because you do write – if you’ve ever thought about tackling songwriting as well. Yeah, I thought about it but most of the writing that I do right now is fiction. That’s sort of where my focus is right now. You started singing when you were a child. How has your singing and performing evolved over the years? Gosh, well, I think when I was younger I did a lot of singing with my father in a traditional jazz band … and then I did singing and musical theater, and I think so much of my focus was on that, belting really loudly, and it’s a good skill to be able to have but I think a lot of my singing now is more nuanced and quiet. I really think that all my years acting really informed the way that I sing in terms of telling the story, and who’s this person, and who are they singing to and, you know, what does this mean? I think it’s more focused on that. Is your father going to be performing with you? Yeah, and he’s actually performing by himself earlier and then we will probably do a couple songs together. Are there any singers who really changed your perception of what singing could be? Ella Fitzgerald. I think she’s the gateway to all great jazz singers. I don’t know, I mean there’s just so many … I think all singers are sort of different and they and all kind of like … how do you pick one color over another? … They all kind of influenced me, and I like all different kinds of singers, from the virtuosity of Ella Fitzgerald to the sort of intimacy of a Blossom Dearie. I love Julie London. Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughn … they’re all so different.

BIG BRANDS. little prices.
You’ve worked with some amazing filmmakers: John Hughes, of course, Jean Luc Godard, Paul Mazursky. What kind of relationship makes for a great working relationship? I think the best actor/director relationships are ones that are collaborative, you know, where you sort of feel the freedom as an actor to try things — that everything’s not completely set in stone. I like when you can come on the set and the blocking isn’t all completely set … that the actors can work on the scene together and figure out what was the character doing, what makes sense, rather than just coming in and sort of moving from mark A to mark B. What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment so far, as you’ve done so much? Being a parent. I mean that sounds like a cliché, but I think being a good parent is the hardest thing … I’m most proud of my family. In terms of everything else, career, I think acting in French was a big one for me. That was really terrifying and sort of difficult. I’m really proud of the theater work that I’ve done, which is, of course, more ephemeral, like with the people that were there in the audience that night, but I really liked my performances as Sally Bowles. I thought it was a really great part for me. You’ve acted in film, you’re a singer, you’ve done Broadway, you write. Where do you see yourself going next? Writing and directing my own thing. I think that’s probably the next step. It’s something I would really like to do.

ABC's
OF SAFE SLEEP
M Chris Palkowski, MD Physician-in-chief Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center

October 2016
ore than 3,000 seemingly healthy babies in the United States this year will go to bed and never wake up. Their deaths are sudden and unexpected. Oftentimes there is little or no medical evidence to explain this mortality, which is referred to as sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) or sometimes the more commonly used term, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). SUID has become a leading cause of death in infants less than 12 months old. That’s the bad news. The good news is that many of these deaths can be prevented if parents take certain precautions recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics; by local, state and federal public health experts; and by physicians here in our own community. Ethan Cutts, MD, a longtime pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente, has taken a special interest in helping to educate parents on how to prevent unexpected infant deaths — especially during October, SIDS awareness month — by promoting the “ABC’s” to save babies’ lives. Infants, he says, need to sleep alone. On their back. In a crib. Alone, back, and crib make up the ABC’s of infant safety. Dr. Cutts and a coalition of community partners have studied SUID extensively in neighboring Sacramento County and came up with eye-opening conclusions after reviewing 20 years of data. “We found that every child who died in his or her sleep had one of four risk factors: Either they were sleeping in a non-infant bed, co-sleeping with a parent or sibling, sleeping on their stomach or side, or there was no crib in the home.” “All of these deaths were preventable,” Dr. Cutts said. Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed is the leading cause of infant death due to injury,
according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A pillow or waterbed mattress can cover an infant’s nose and mouth; an adult or sibling can roll onto an infant on the bed; an infant can become wedged in the crevice of a mattress; an infant’s head and neck can get caught between crib railings, leading to strangulation, according to the CDC. Dr. Cutts has been working with groups such as Safe Beginnings, First 5 Sacramento, the Child Abuse Prevention Council and the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, among others, to seek solutions to unexpected child deaths. As a result, he helped develop the Infant Safe Sleep program at Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center. When a mother gives birth at the hospital’s Women and Children’s Center, a nurse will ask the mom where she plans to have the baby sleep. If the family doesn’t have a safe place for the child to sleep, the hospital staff will make sure a crib is sent home with the baby, at no cost. The cribs are funded by First 5 Sacramento through a grant to the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Sacramento. Since starting the program started in May 2015 the hospital has given an average one crib each week. Other hospitals in the area have since started their own program. “Providing families with cribs is such a simple but elegant solution to fix an unfortunate problem, and to raise awareness of how to prevent senseless deaths,” Dr. Cutts said. “We are grateful for this partnership of community organizations that is helping to save lives.” We appreciate the life-saving efforts of Dr. Cutts and other providers to keep infants safe throughout our local community. Please help spread the word to new parents about the ABC’s of safe sleep for infants: Their child needs to sleep alone, on its back, and in a crib.

Modern home offers clean, contemporary elegance By Jennifer Bonnett
H
ere’s your chance to own in the luxurious Whitney Oaks gated community of Rocklin. The calming taupe-colored walls and classic elegance inside this Black Oak Drive property will make coming home feel like a trip to a Tuscany villa. The contemporary, Tudor-style home, originally built in 2004, has been tastefully updated and remodeled throughout, making it look like a million-dollar property. It boasts crown molding, plantation shutters, travertine tile and cherry hardwood flooring as some of the delightful features found inside. “The tasteful finishes are sure to please,” said listing agent Kimberly S. Jones of Lyon Real Estate. “The home has been kept in immaculate condition.” Among its four bedrooms is a convenient downstairs one perfect for an adult child or aging parents who may struggle with stairs. A fifth room could be used as a convenient ground-level home office. The master bedroom upstairs has a walk-in closet and features double sinks in the bath. Chefs will love the well-appointed, eat-in kitchen that includes double ovens, gas cooktop and a convenient butler’s pantry. It has a center preparation island with sink and granite countertops, as well as a built-in microwave. There is also a formal dining room. Outside, one can enjoy cooking thanks to the beautiful built-in barbecue and sitting area perfect for late summertime drinks. Afterward, the beautiful sparkling saltwater swimming pool and spa will be most inviting. These fit into an easy-to-maintain fenced yard, Jones said – one that is fully landscaped with sprinklers installed.
The three-car tandem garage includes an epoxy floor, making accidental spills a breeze to clean up. Plenty of storage can also be found in the indoor laundry room with its own sink. Assessments on the property in the gated community go to a shared exercise room, common areas and yet another swimming pool. This home has a low-maintenance tile roof and is easy to get to. From Highway 65, take the Pleasant Grove exit, go east toward Rocklin. After Pleasant Grove turns into Park, turn left on Black Oak Place. The neighborhood is served by Rocklin Unified School District.
