John L Sullivan keeps old promise, to give back.
W
hen hearing the name John L. Sullivan, everyone within Placer County knows to whom you are referring. Although his name may be prevalent, his reputation as a benevolent and philanthropic benefactor is one of the county’s best kept secrets. John L. Sullivan was born in Brainerd,Minn., and moved to California when he was 3 years old. Following a career in the car business was a very natural progression for John L. Sullivan as his father owned several dealerships and raised him in those surroundings. “My father was always dabbling in the car business,” Sullivan stated. When a military move relocated the Sullivan family from San Bernardino to Roseville, Sullivan knew he found the place where he would plant his roots. Even when his mother and father moved to Reno, he chose to stay behind. In 1963, Sullivan began working at Caddel Chevrolet where only a mere 14 years later in 1977, he owned the dealership. There was no slowing down his success. In 1993, he purchased the Toyota dealership and five years ago a Dodge dealership was added to a grouping in Yuba City. Two years ago, Yuba City got an entirely new facility. In 2013, a brand new Toyota dealership

was built in Livermore making the expansion of Sullivan’s car empire seemingly endless. Even though Sullivan has dispersed into areas such as Yuba City and Livermore, he still remains prevalent in the Roseville area. Sullivan is one of the original, founding members of the “Roseville Gang,” or those who began what is now the Roseville Auto Mall. Not only is this auto mall the most successful in Northern California, but it is also the largest auto mall in the United States. Sullivan has always had a heart for people and his accomplishments have served as a path for considerable eleemosynary. He made a promise to himself in his youth: “Down the road, if I am able and successful, I will give back.” He has remained true to his word and has surpassed expectation. His charitable nature began about 30 years ago simply by answering and fulfilling the wishes found in letter to Santa. Sullivan would go to the post office to pick up letters to Santa from families in need, purchase the desired items on the lists, plus more. Then a good friend of his would dress up as Santa and they would go to each home spreading Christmas joy with food and presents pilling under the trees of families who had never seen so much generosity. and to this day, Sullivan continues in grander Christmas giving and more. “We are always interested in the community,” Sullivan said. So far, this year more than $120,000 have been given to multiple charities — and the year is not over yet. Several of the charities that receive donations include, Lighthouse Counseling and Resource Center, Placer County Sheriff Association, Special Olympics, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, St. Vincent de Paul Society. “We (the employees of the Sullivan Auto Group) do fundraisers every month and Mr. Sullivan matches dollar for dollar,” commented Sullivan’s Community Relations Manager Christy Patton. There is always something going on within the company whether it is bake sales, date night fundraisers, selling fresh eggs, chili cook offs or even clearing the sales floor for annual Christmas events. From starting with 20 employees to more than 800 today, it is an impressive feat to match every donation during these fundraisers; however this is where Sullivan’s selfless hospitality is bounteous. “It’s a chance to give back,” Sullivan said. Though money speaks louder than words, actions are the loudest of all. Sullivan is always an active participant during any and all of his philanthropic

events. If he isn’t giving presents or moving large loads of food donations he is spreading hope and joy to all those involved or even doing the dishes after feeding the homeless. He gives out backpacks full of hygienic products and is also currently donating a van for Sutter Cancer Center in order to assist in the transport of cancer patients. Sullivan is not a ghost during his charitable contributions, but rather a smiling face and a helping hand to those in need. Sullivan’s giving nature also extends to those he works with. You will never hear him say an employee works for him, but rather they work with him. Sullivan ties to also personally answer every letter written to him by his customers. “We wait on our customers like family. It’s the way we do business,” Sullivan stated. “The culture within the Sullivan Auto Group is amazing,” Patton said. This year will be the first annual John L. Sullivan Automotive Group Golf Tournament, benefiting St. Vincent de Paul of Placer County. The outcome has far surpassed what anyone had expected. Though many know Sullivan and have greatly benefited from his generosity, few truly know just who to thank for the bounding kindness that has impacted the community of Roseville and beyond. It looks like nothing will slow John L. Sullivan down. “We are still growing,” he humbly stated.

he Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for their annual summer party, SPLASH, with an impressive line-up of food and beverage vendors, and live entertainment. The event is scheduled for 6:30-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Roseville Aquatics Complex, located at 3051 Woodcreek Oaks Blvd. The all-inclusive ticket entry will give you access to more than 35 signature dishes from the best restaurants and caterers in the area as well as more than 30 beverage vendors bringing in their best handcrafted beers, wines, spirits and non-alcoholic refreshments all while enjoying great live entertainment. Two spectacular bands are playing at SPLASH this year, Notorious and Harmonics Steelband. Attendees will get the chance to vote for their favorite food, beverage, dessert and the best decorated booth. SPLASH is sponsored by the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Roseville. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will be used to support At-Risk Youth within the community. Tickets to Splash are $60 per ticket or $99 for a pair and after Sept. 1 the price changes to $80 per ticket. The party is open to guests aged 21 and over. Identification is required for entry. I
talian cuisine is like a warm hug when it’s made right. It brings your belly comfort with an indulgence of a variety of dishes. And, it brings smiles to everyone indulging, especially at The Place in Roseville. Owner and Chef Mike McDermott took his love for Sunday family meals and created an ensemble of classic Italian meals for guests at The Place for the past four years. He wanted a restaurant with ambiance where guests could crack bread, enjoy a glass of fine Chianti, and eat meals where conversations were rich — just like his childhood. The Place’s kitchen is open and nearby the dining room so guests can watch their meals made. The kitchen houses a wood fire pizza oven that is stoked with almond and cherry woods to add flavor to the pies. McDermott creates a dough that is “kneadless” to say. The dough is made fresh and does not go through a handkneaded process. This keeps the dough fluffy and delicate, the same way you might enjoy a pizza in Italy. The Place’s Chef de Cuisine Mark

Riedel spent his early culinary years learning from the best in the business, and studying to learn what it takes to be a chef at Diablo College in Pleasanton. Riedel works closely with McDermott to create traditional dishes that are familiar to Americans, plus authentic Italian plates, such as the special Frutti di Mare. This entree combines muscles and clams with The Place’s signature, hand-crafted marinara sauce over a bed of linguine pasta. McDermott grew up learning to craft family-style Italian meals from his grammy and his mom. McDermott watched closely while in the kitchen, practiced when he could, and studied family recipes so that he could make his own some day. Sunday family meals are a big tradition in the Italian culture. Large plates like the Sunday Gravy graced McDermott’s family table where

intimate conversations were had. Riedel said that the Sunday Gravy dish invites the foodies with big appetites. The family-style meal that includes a salad for two to four people accompanied by a generous bowl of penne pasta ladled with a one-of-a-kind Bolognese sauce and in-house made sausage and/or meatballs. It’s up to the chef ’s discretion what meat he adds to the dish, and often there are braised short ribs, porchetta, or even slowcooked tender veal. The Sunday Gravy is rich and hearty, and according to Riedel, it’ll stick to your bones. The Place built their reputation on family recipes by using ingredients that are in season. Produce is delivered throughout the week so that the food is prepared with ingredients fresh in color and taste. Some favorite items at The Place include Chicken Marsala, Porches, which is slow-braised pork over creamed

Riedel said that they make lasagna twice a week, and it always sells out. In order to get a piece of this classic dish, you need to arrive early because it will be gone in a matter of hours. The Place is also well-known for in-house made sausage and meatballs, both McDermott family recipes. McDermott has plans to venture out past Roseville. This fall their second location will open in Placerville.

he gravitas commanded by the view from the top of Mount Ralston, the third highest peak in the Lake Tahoe region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains some 120 miles southeast of Roseville, is difficult to properly convey through words. Pictures don’t do it justice either, and a day-hike travelogue can at best hope to scratch the surface of what makes this Desolation Wildernessmountain, in our own back yard, attractive as the perfect mid-range yet challenging five- to six-hour day hike. The trailhead for Mount Ralston is located just outside the small town of Strawberry, directly across from Camp Sacramento, off Highway 50. The trail itself consists of 4.1 miles each way of pure mountain air, rocks, trees, granite, wildlife and underbrush, flanked by bursting patches of flowers. Reaching straight up, the trail navigates a steep climbing slope – utilizing limited
switchbacks – to the 9,235-foot summit; a 2,735-foot elevation gain. The hike begins at a shared parking lot with Our Lady of the Sierra Catholic Church; situated among the trees, its picturesque redwood frames bathed in summer sunlight call to mind the old Christian hymn the “Church in the Wildwood.” On the trail with me were friend of the news team Oscar Granados, photographer, and our mutual friend Ryan Schaff, a professor from the Bay Area living part-time in Pollock Pines. Our backpacks were equipped with water, trail mix, granola bars, homemade oatmeal cookies, sunscreen and a camera. In retrospect I should have brought a set of well-fitting knee braces, as this hike levies some serious punishments on the joints during descent. A second application of sunscreen, and perhaps two water bottles per person, are also

advised. Proper hiking boots are a must to avoid blisters or ankle rolling on this trail. The road up to Mount Ralston was a delight to the senses: fresh air, only slightly tainted by California’s seasonal wildfires, and the colorful wildflowers silent on the forest floor greeted us, mingled with breathtaking vistas that overlooked vast swaths of forest pines. As the climb increased in altitude more frequent stops were required; careful attention to the breathing process and pacing ourselves, with the support of generous hydration and trail-mix snacks became central to the ascent. A noticeable change occurs at higher altitudes where the air is thinner, and usually cleaner; an appreciable difficulty in breathing takes hold, while at the same time less oxygen in the bloodstream creates a mild euphoria akin to the socalled “runner’s high.” The experience is not unpleasant, and mixed with the majestic scenery and purely awe-inspiring landscape afforded by nature, makes one appreciate on a visceral level how very powerful nature truly is. It may be cliché, but the vastness and unconquerable grandeur of the Sierra Nevada mountains forces the hiking urbanite to recall that civilization itself is only strung together by the thinnest threads of human imagination and ingenuity. Having started our hike from the trailhead at 9:30 a.m. we made good time, needing the occasional rest to boost our energy levels as the sharp climb wore increasingly taxing on our leg muscles and lungs. Trail area, used for emergency access; the Desolation Wilderness trail, beginning at the designating sign where a free day permit is required and can be picked up on location; an area of granite rocks and boulders; and the summit itself, rising up through ever-sparser shrubbery and a diminutive tree line. We reached the summit at about 1:30 p.m. At the top of Mount Ralston a handful of other hikers ate lunch and enjoyed the majestic view which overlooked Lake Aloha, Echo Lake, Fallen Leaf Lake and Lake Tahoe itself; also visible in the panorama were the second and first highest mountain tops in the area – Pyramid Peak and Mount Tallac, respectively. A small ammo box with notebooks to sign sits on the peak, where hikers can “sign in” and read the thoughts that others have left at the peak before them. At the top it’s all worth it; every bit of pain, every ounce of burning in your legs, the huffing and puffing and expenditure of pure adrenaline that gets you up there. arents! It’s time to get organized. The lazy summer days are coming to an end, vacations are over, and kids have gone back to school. Yeah! Planning schedules, getting the family to bed earlier, signing up for activities, and shopping for clothes and supplies should be in full swing by now. Yuck! Getting organized is an essential tool for a successful transition from summer time to school time. We all want our children to excel in school academically to the best of their ability. We want them to be physically active for health, endurance and agility. As we strive to deliver proper nutrition and good night’s sleep, sometimes it is easier said than done. We may all feel a little daunted at times especially when kids are picky when it comes to food and house rules. But fear not. Below are some tips on how to get your kids on board this school year. Be the example by modeling the behaviors you want to see in your kids. Academics, physical activity, nutrition and rest cannot be mutually exclusive; if you focus on just school and sports and ignore nutrition, over time, your kids will begin to suffer. You know how you feel when you head off to work with little sleep and a coffee in tow that substitutes breakfast — you’re starting the day behind the eight ball. By the time you get home, you will probably have no energy to exercise, have little patience with the kids and homework, and you will be too tired to prepare a decent dinner. Fast food anyone? And tomorrow
you will start all over again. Imagine how your kids will fair at school without proper nutrition — not very well either. Overcome this vicious cycle. Maximize success in life by starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast meal. Parents need nutrition discipline just as much as kids do and it starts with breakfast. You know that good nutrition improves mental and physical abilities. In fact, multiple studies have shown that people who skip breakfast are more likely to eat more during the day, be overweight, score poorly on tests, and be less physically active. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If morning time is just too rushed, how can you make time? Make mealtime a priority. It is as important to teach your children good nutrition at an early age as it is to teach them good study habits. Get in the habit of having the family prepare lunches the night before. If they have to eat it, they may take more of an interest in preparing it. Imagine how much money, time and your waistline you will save from eating home food instead of fast food. With lunch already prepared, there will be more time for a nutritious breakfast meal. What should it be? I can tell you what it shouldn’t be. If you would not feed it to your pets, why would you feed it to your kids? Can you see yourself pouring Fruit Loops into your cat’s bowl for breakfast, giving your dog snacks of Pop Tarts or Doritos, or offering a bowl of juice? Of course not. Maybe it’s time to purge the pantry, fridge and freezer and get rid of the cereals, bagels, chips, juice boxes and highly processed, sugar products and restock it with some nutritious breakfast foods for the entire family. Try some of these suggestions: SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH SPINACH AND SHREDDED CHEESE: Mix this together and pop in muffin tins for a pre-made breakfast. NON-SUGAR, PLAIN GREEK YOGURT SMOOTHIE: Blend with fresh strawberries, one teaspoon of honey, and a dash of vanilla extract. HAM AND CHEESE QUESADILLAS: These can be made ahead, quickly microwaved and eaten on the go. Trying to keep the kids slim? Use Mission Carb Balance brand tortillas. SPICY EGG BURRITO: Cook two eggs, cheese, avocado and salsa together and wrap in a burrito to go. FINGER FOODS: Two cheese sticks, peanut butter and a small apple, sliced.

ometimes I crave something savory sweet. The balance between satisfying my cravings for something salty and something sugary is found usually in Thai food. I love Thai food! This recipe takes only about 20 minutes to make and would be great served over some jasmine rice or eaten simply as a stir fry. I have started using coco aminos instead of soy sauce and it is quite a pleasant sauce. With lower sodium and natural coconut I don’t think I will ever go back to just regular soy sauce. Plus this dish has peanut butter in it, which makes every Thai dish delicious!
Blackberry Thai Stir-Fry Serves 2-3 INGREDIENTS: 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts 3 tablespoons coco aminos 2 tablespoons rice vinegar Salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons sesame seeds 1 garlic clove, minced ½ cup of blackberries A handful of fresh basil 2 tablespoons peanut butter A handful of chopped peanuts 2 cups of sliced cabbage, carrots, and broccoli. ½ white onion DIRECTIONS: 1. Cut the chicken into bite sized pieces and place on the stove in a well oiled skillet (I used olive or grapeseed oil). 2. Slice the onion and mince the garlic and throw into the skillet. 3. Once fragrant add the vinegar and coco aminos. 4. Next add the blackberries and peanut butter to the mix. 5. The chicken should be close to done before you throw in the cabbage, carrots, and broccoli. 6. If the sauce is too dry add a dash of water and some more coco aminos. 7. Take off the burner and add the chopped peanuts and fresh basil. 8. Serve and enjoy!
