hen the leaves begin to change color in the scenic hills of Camino in late August, something sweet is just around the corner. It's harvest season for the Apple Hill Growers Association, who have been sharing the fruits of their labor with visitors for more than 50 years in El Dorado County and beyond. Just a short drive up Highway 50 will bring you to this fabulous local destination that is sure to wow visitors of all ages. Bannered as one of the region’s most significant tourist destinations, Apple Hill is known for its rural ambiance and tasty products that extend well beyond that of just apples. Consisting of 55 ranches with the largest concentration of apple growers in California. Featuring 16 different varieties of apples and various other fruits, the Apple Hill Growers Association is also home to 14 bake shops, 10 different wineries, all of which host a collaborative average of 55 special events annually, 18 of which are designed for children. The specialty products and opportunities don’t stop there, a day spa nestled in this beautiful region and 14 Christmas tree farms that will bring you back for more during the holidays. “Apple Hill farms have been a great day trip for people for more than 50 years,” said Robyn Delfino, marketing chairperson for the Apple Hill Growers Association. “People keep coming back.” The phrase “people keep coming back,” may be an understatement. Last year it is estimated that over 1 million visitors made the trip to Apple Hill

That number illustrates the popularity of this family friendly destination, which saw its early beginnings in 1964. This was a few years after a pear blight encouraged many of the growers in Camino to focus their production to apples. It was then, that a local foursome including apple grower Gene Bolster, Dick Bethell the El Dorado County Farm Advisor, Agriculture Commissioner Ed Delfino and retired Army officers organized what is now known as the Apple Hill Growers Association. In that summer, the association hosted its very first press picnic to give the community a taste of Apple Hill and the rest is history. This year, the Apple Hill Growers are proud to bring back the tradition of the Apple Hill Smorgy experience to kick off the opening of the 2016 season with the Taste of Apple HillDessert Smorgy from 2 until 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Larsen Apple Barn. This event has limited seating available and will be $50 per person. Details on tickets for the event are available on the growers website at www.applehill.com. The Aug. 28 event marks the beginning of the sweetest season for Apple Hill Growers and visitors alike, as the area comes to life for the fall months with the sights, aromas, and the great tastes of all types of treats. farms like the apple donuts are even shipped to customers far away by special request. “Part of our draw for the area is the quality of the product,” explained Delfino. “The climate is so good, it brings out more sugar in the fruit. You know this is safe, good quality, local fruit which is so healthy.” In addition to the great eats and the ingredients to make your own special treats, the Apple Hill Farms have many great products beyond the apple alone. The Association has its very own cookbook that can be purchased at various locations. Many of the member farms host craft vendors and special events for the whole family to enjoy. From Johnny Appleseed Day celebrations to fishing, pony rides, hay rides and amazing mazes, no youngster or young at heart will find themselves board in this form of natures playground. So how does one plan a trip to the Apple Hill Farms? To each their own as everyone has their own desires and styles. One of the most traditional ways to tour the area is through the official Apple Hill map that details all of the member farms in the area. This map is available at various Apple Hill Grower locations and visitor centers as well as on page 10 in this edition of the Roseville Magazine. Now that we are in the tech age, the official Apple Hill Growers App can be downloaded to your mobile device and the official website is a key resource to all of the special events that take place throughout the seasons ahead at www.applehill.com. “Part of the fun of Apple Hill farms is searching out the farms and finding your favorite,” added Delfino. “They’ve all got a lot of tourist attraction.” Regardless of which route you travel to reach the Apple Hill Farms, you will travel through nearby towns such as Placerville, Camino and Pollock Pines, all of which offer their fair share of lodging and dining opportunities should you decide to make your daytrip into a full weekend to the region. A visit to the Apple Hill farms is a great stop along the route to and from South Lake Tahoe and it’s a great destination to bring family and friends regardless of how far you plan to travel.

Sautéed Apples with Ginger Ice Cream
N
othing says prepping for back to school season like apples, but since it is still summer, ice cream is the most popular dessert for cooling down on the hot days. August is the best time to combine the two. Baked apples with cinnamon sugar with a scoop over homemade ginger ice cream and a dollop of whipped cream is sure to hit the spot as we enter into the in-between seasons of summer and fall. Have the best of both world with this decadent dessert and don’t let the summer nights go without something sweet. INGREDIENTS GINGER ICE CREAM
2 cups heavy cream 1 cup unsweetened almond or coconut milk blend ¾ cup granulated sugar 8 egg yolks Knob of fresh ginger SAUTÉED APPLE SLICES
noelle konrad healthy eating
3 1 2 2
green apples tablespoon cinnamon tablespoons brown sugar tablespoons of butter
DIRECTIONS: GINGER ICE CREAM
1. Pour heavy cream, almond/coconut milk, and half of the sugar into a sauce pan. Chop the ginger into large chunks
until you have an overflowing half of a cup. Simmer over medium heat (it will overflow if you don’t watch it closely). 2. In a large mixing bowl, place the egg yolks and the other half of the sugar and whisk it in. 3. Once it is well mixed, slowly pour the hot milk and ginger over the eggs while whisking the entire time (gradually pour and whisk so as not to scramble the eggs). 4. Place a sieve over the pan on the stove and pour the mixture back into the pan to simmer. 5. Remove sieve and mix constantly and scrape the bottom so nothing sticks. This should take about 5 to 10 minutes to thicken and coat the back of a spoon. 6. Place the sieve over the large mixing bowl and strain again. 7. Set bowl over a larger bowl with a small amount of ice water in it to chill the mixture. Do not get water into the custard. 8. Place into an ice cream maker and follow the instructions (each ice cream maker is a little bit different). SAUTÉED APPLE SLICES
1. Slice apples leaving the skin on or off, depending on preference. 2. Mix cinnamon and brown sugar together in a bowl. Toss the apples in the mixture. 3. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. 4. Place coated apples on the stove until brown and soft about 10 -15 minutes.

Essentials TO BRING TO THE DORM

witching from your room at home to a college dorm or apartment can be a hard transition. Not only do you have less space, but you also have to share it with strangers. Luckily, there are many college packing checklists that will tell you what you need to bring. But what are the most important items on all those lists? Or what may those lists not tell you? Straight from the mouths of current college kids themselves, here are seven dorm room essentials. First on the list are headphones. Now they may seem like a weird item, and definitely not the first to come to mind, but you won’t want to forget them. Alexandria Hiebert, who is going into her junior year at Folsom Lake College, said, “You’ll love your roommates, but
sometimes you just need to be able to drown them out to get your work done.” Listening to music may also decrease stress or help you fall asleep for a mid-day nap. While it’s great that colleges provide students with their own mattresses, sometimes they’re not the most comfortable. This is where a mattress pad can come in handy. These cheap enhancers may turn sleeping from a nightmare into a fantasy. “You can’t be successful without a good night’s sleep and everyone knows dorm beds suck,” Matthew Donlan said a fifth-year senior at Youngstown State in Ohio. Prices are as low as $15 but don’t be scared to spend a bit more money if you’re a really sensitive sleeper. Now here’s an item you probably
would never think of: a drying rack. Maia Baltzley, a sophomore at University of California, Santa Cruz suggests a drying rack because, “School dryers can be really finicky and often times you won’t want to keep shrinking your pants over and over,” she said. We all know how it gets when those jeans become a lot more than just “skinny.” Remember in those good ol’ high school days when getting papers stapled was as easy walking up to your teacher’s desk? Not anymore. While that might work at a small college, in general it’s best to have your own stapler. Consider buying one or two mini staplers. These are small enough to carry in a backpack but also get the job done. They will also save you the trouble of going from door to door, “It’s something people don’t always think to bring and people would always borrow mine,” Baltzley said. When you live at home one of your parents is like your personal doctor. They tell you when you should go to school or if you’re sick enough to stay home, just by touching your forehead with the back of their hand. Unfortunately (or fortunately) we can’t take our mothers or the backs of their hands with us to college. What we can take with us is a thermometer. Brittany Snelson who is in her third year at Chico State University explained how she could have used one, “I would never
know when I had a cold or when I was genuinely sick,” Snelson said. We’ve all experienced the frustration of having a chord that was too short right as our phone or laptop was dying. Or perhaps we look around the room only to discover there are no outlets available. This is why Nicole Frydenlund, a sophomore at Oregon State University suggests bringing an extension chord. “From my dorm experience, there were three outlets total for two girls, and they were placed very inconveniently too! Three outlets for laptops, phones, lamps/ lights, hairdryers etc. was just way too little. It was something that I never thought of until I got there and I quickly realized how helpful they are.” Last but not least we have a good lamp. Not only will this lamp help with late night studying, but it may improver your move, “Dorm lighting can be a little depressing sometimes and I think that giving the room a warm lighting can be really important for morale,” Charlie Schroeder said, who will be going into his sophomore year at San Francisco State University. So there you have it. It may seem a bit overwhelming, but right now is the perfect time to take care of all the back to school sales and save some money. There are tons of deals out there so that you can afford all your dorm room essentials.

COFFEE CRAZE: Brian and Mattie Place have been closely involved with South Placer since bringing Dutch Brothers to it. Photo by Kim Palaferri
The Dutch ARE HERE! By John Dickey
Local business owners unveil new Dutch Bros. Drive-through in Roseville.
I
t took some searching, but Dutch Bros. Coffee franchise owner-operators Brian and Mattie Place are on their way to a second drive-through coffee kiosk in South Placer — this time in Roseville. Their spot in Granite Bay serves up coffee and smoothies with an upbeat, fun-loving crew that keeps the drinks flowing. The husband-and-wife entrepreneur team has owned and operated the kiosk at 8663 Auburn-Folsom Road since 2014. “We just go into any other coffee shop and they’re kind of more just chill, mellow, making the coffee. We’re the opposite of that, we’re high-energy, we drink our product a lot,” said Mattie. The music keeps the vibes and energy up for the employees while they keep up what Brian describes as a “rhythm” inside the drive-through. Employees have to flow well in tight quarters and work as a team. “You really have to be able to bounce off one another, understand ‘hey, you’re doing this, I’m doing that.’ It takes some rhythm, it really does. The music plays a huge role because it keeps the vibes and the energy up and it keeps everybody happening and moving,” said Brian. They decided to become franchise entrepreneurs after working at Dutch Bros. Coffee in entry-level jobs as baristas, or “bro-istas” as they refer to the position, serving drinks in drivethrough kiosks in Eugene, Oregon while they attended college. When their college friends went on to “big-girl and big-boy jobs” they decided that owning their own coffee franchise sounded
more appealing than anything they could get with their degrees in journalism and marketing, and sports therapy. “Never did Brian or I feel the need to go to a different job. We always stayed with Dutch Brothers,” said Mattie. Both she and her husband Brian are 30. They live in Roseville and have a 1-year-old daughter, Attison. Along with free drinks and a paycheck, their jobs gave them a leg up for company franchise opportunities that were only available to people who have worked as employees and managers at company locations, said Mattie. The company’s website states that franchising is closed to the public and is an opportunity exclusively for existing, qualified Dutch Bros. Coffee employees. Unfortunately, when they first inquired about the possibility in 2009, the economy had tanked, throwing a monkey wrench into their franchising plans. New franchisees were not allowed in at that point, said Mattie. She and her husband instead worked as managers in newly opened Sacramento-area franchises, gaining valuable experience in the nuts-and-bolts of starting a new location. The economy improved to the point when the husband-andwife team got the go-ahead from the company to find a new location in Sacramento. But the developed areas lacked the space for a kiosk. Brian said he drove around six hours a day in Sacramento-area communities searching for the right location. Then the Places got their break when Dutch Bros. Coffee gave them a greenlight to look for their first franchise in Granite Bay. continued on page 20

“Eventually we got the opportunity to move our search area up to Granite Bay and we never looked back,” Brian said. Hundreds of carloads of customers showed up for the opening of their first store in Granite Bay, including Dutch Bros. Coffee fans who show up to be at a first opening, and people wanting a free 12-ounce drink. Since opening their first kiosk, the Places have contributed money from the business to charities including donations for Granite Bay High School’s Safe and Sober Grad Night, for medical expenses of a seriously ill child, and for families of fatal highway crash victims. They teamed up with other Dutch Bros. Coffee franchises to raise money for the family of a California Highway Patrol officer who died in the line of duty. They opened their second store July 12 at 1225 Baseline Road in Roseville. The store’s 720-square-foot area makes it the largest Dutch Bros. Coffee kiosk so far in the Sacramento-Arden-Roseville metropolitan area. Their second store will give them a payroll of 79 employees at the two locations, compared with 18

Woodcreek High’s Jordan Brown helps Team USA in Spain.
T
he light glinted off the gold medal hanging from the striped national lanyard dangled around Jordan Brown’s neck. As his under-17 US national team gathered at half court, the realization set in; Brown will bring more hardware back to Roseville. Donning a white, USA Basketball jersey with the No. 11 on the front and back, Brown became part of an elite group this year, over the fourth of July weekend. As many of his friends back were preparing for firework shows in America, Brown was surrounded by his close family members while with the USA Basketball Men’s U17 World Championship Team in Spain, competing for the team’s fourth-straight world title. But this year’s gold medal isn’t Brown’s first. Rather, he captured the gold in Argentina with the under-16 squad last year and played a key role in the team’s championship run. “It was a really great opportunity to not only win the gold once but twice,” Brown admitted upon his return this week. “I was able to compete and really impact that U-16 team last year and it was an honor to play with the U-17 team this year.” But before he could claim the championship, Brown needed to make the team first. He had to try out in Colorado Springs against 37 of the best prep basketball athletes around the nation before eventually making the 12-man roster cut. In fact, Brown was the only California native on the roster that traveled to Spain for the FIBA International Basketball Championships.

“It was a really great opportunity to not only win the gold once but twice.” Jordan brown, Under-17 National basketball player
“For having a group like this come together as well as they have, especially on the defensive end, was a real tribute to Miles Simon and Mike Jones,” said USA U17 head coach Don Showalter (USA Basketball), who now owns a perfect 45-0 record at the helm of the USA U16/U17 teams since 2009. “It was one of those things where you don’t plan on having a team that’s going to be as quite as good as this, but every game, they got better and better. We really played well (in the championship).” After spotting Turkey an 8-2 lead early in the contest, the 2016 U.S. squad turned on the ignition, went on a 19-0 scoring spree and continued to dominate for a 96-56 golden victory on Sunday night. Although Brown only averaged 12 minutes in the 7 contests the U.S. played, he still managed to average nearly six points and five rebounds a game. He found himself playing key minutes down the stretch, protecting the his team’s lead. “I think I played more of a defensive role on this team,” Brown acknowledged. “I felt like my job was to stop the other team’s offensive attack and when I saw an opportunity to score I did so.” Brown posted his best outing against Egypt in which continued on page 24

he put up a personal tournament-high 12 points, while snagging 8 rebounds. His contribution helped his team win big, 10457, to clinch the top seed out of the Group A heading into the championship rounds. The team added to it’s record-setting run with a program-best 133 points against South Korea in the quarterfinals and the largest margin of victory in a men’s U17 title game, 96-56, over Turkey. “You can’t play like you do in high school on Team USA,” Brown admitted. “Everyone on your team and the other team is always going hard and playing with aggression. But seeing that makes you more hungry to come back and play well during the high school season.” The Roseville community welcomed Brown back with a celebration at James A. Hall Park in early July. Brown’s new gold medal dangled from his neck as he made his rounds and thanked his fans, who showed up to get a glimpse of the young superstar and show their support. With international play in his rearview mirror, Brown can look ahead. Woodcreek returns four starters from last year’s playoff squad, including Brown at the team’s core. They’re all hungry for a big year after watching their teammate capture gold with the best of the best.

howls ahead WITH NEW E.P. By Matt Kramer
R
oseville’s Humble Wolf thrives on momentum: live music, bustling creativity and constant pairings of sound and ideas for its sonic brew are the course du jour for its members. Humble Wolf recently played at Sacramento’s ‘First Festival,’ a grass-roots local music celebration held Father’s Day weekend that featured 40 local music acts spanning genres from acoustic indie-folk to grimacing death metal and everything in between. While the festival became something of a regional controversy, Humble Wolf kept on its upward trajectory and pushed for more musical output; the band has already played Sacramento’s widely popular Concerts in the Park series, and released a five-song E.P. titled “Fiction for Liars” at a Roseville show July 29. It’s also hoping for a full-length album launch next year. Despite First Festival’s lackluster turn out, Humble Wolf brought the same presence and power to the stage that they put into all the work they do. “Humble Wolf will play the same regardless of if it’s five people or five thousand,” said lead vocalist Jayson Angove. “I think it’s an energy thing. It’s nice to play to larger groups who
26
August 2016
are excited, but it’s also good to play to smaller groups who are excited.” At the Father’s Day show the band was included alongside a plethora of Sacramento-area favorites including The Nickel Slots, Drop Dead Red, Whiskey & Stitches, and Be Brave Bold Robot. Three stages, art displays, local vendors, food trucks and craft beer created an inviting atmosphere for a weekend music festival that was challenged by poor timing and miscalculation. Ignoring the drawbacks, Humble Wolf made the most of the day; howling notes off of crunchy rock n roll guitars over South Side Park, and embodying to many who were there what live music is all about. “More than anything I love a good live band,” Angove said. “There are a lot of bands who record great music — there’s lots of tricks you can do in the studio to make you sound better than you are. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. I think I just really enjoy the challenge of a live show because it’s multiple people working together to achieve one goal, which is to perform a song and have fun with it.” More information on Humble Wolf and access to their music can be found at humblewolf.com.

environments
N
ot all fitness clubs are created equal and not all gyms are right for everyone. Generally, there are five fitness center or “gym” environments and there is usually a difference in price, facility, amenities, staff and even member base demographics. Here is a quick summary of each kind of club to help you choose the best fit for you and your wellness needs.
Michael S. Parker fitness professional Elite Athletics Training
CORPORATE CHAIN GYMS & FRANCHISES
One distinct advantage for joining this kind of gym is the accessibility to multiple locations and the consistency they can deliver in facility, equipment and group classes. The price of membership is typically affordable and these clubs provide a range of cost options and membership terms. As a long time fitness professional, I must point out that corporate chain gyms have created a negative stereotype about sales, exercise and even personal trainers. The combination of hyper focused sales and inexperienced staff can be repelling to a large portion of people looking for a total wellness program. BOUTIQUE PERSONAL TRAINING STUDIOS
Without question, working with the right certified personal trainer is a sure way to see significant results. A professional personal trainer will create a very specific program based on your current condition level and ideal fitness objective. Good trainers will perform a comprehensive fitness assessment and develop a program to bring your body back into structural alignment and then progressively create interesting new workouts that safely and effectively deliver results. Like most specialized services, price is usually the biggest topic of concern for those interested in hiring a trainer. However, the return on investment is often measured by improved flexibility, desired physique, endurance, strength, joint health and cardiovascular fortitude. When seeking a personal trainer, price should not necessarily be the deciding factor. OLYMPIC STYLE GYMS
These classes are designed to accommodate a smaller membership base and are known for intense workouts. Many of the maneuvers in these classes
28
August 2016
are based on Olympic-style lifting. High Intensity Interval Training is also woven into these classes to really challenge your fitness. Unfortunately, many of these owner operators are not certified trainers and the injury rate for this class type is notoriously high. Yet the attraction power comes from the sense of community these smaller gyms naturally create and the fact that you will no doubt be challenged by the routines. The price for this kind of fitness service can be greater than that of a corporate chain gym but you get arguably more value for the dollar. Warehouses, industrial space or even home garages are a common facility site for these gyms. This means they provide bare amenities, if any at all. However, some clubs in industrial areas have made significant investment into atmosphere so it’s best to check them out in person. YOGA, PILATES AND MIND-BODY STUDIOS
Typically, these fitness options are low-impact and can greatly reduce stress, increase flexibility, build core strength and fortify joint stability. Each location has its own ambiance, culture and instructor quality. Enjoying a two or three-day trail may be beneficial so take a few classes and decide which instructor and time work best for you. Price can range from medium and high but most of these studios are specialized and charge accordingly. You get what you pay for so if you really like the program and people, price should be the least of your concerns. LUXURY BRAND OR COUNTRY CLUBS
Luxury brand clubs can be a corporate chain, small multi-club group or single location entity. Most of these clubs have high-level amenities such as racquet sports, swimming pools, recreational water features, bars, restaurants and opulent locker rooms. Some of the pricey options have onsite salons and spas and even some medical offices. While many of these luxuries are not necessary to achieve fitness results, they can enhance your experience or even motivate you to work out more consistently. Yet for all the glamour, the machines are the same as the cheap corporate volume gym across the street and the dumbbells all weigh the same. In a sense, joining a luxury club is more for exclusivity, social connection and ambiance than it is for fitness. Prices can be very high compared to other options but some people find the extra cost worth it. Remember, the purpose of joining a fitness center or enrolling in a service is to achieve your fitness goals. I encourage you to get involved in the program that will deliver results and keep you interested in making your own wellness a lifestyle and daily priority!

Fruit Spiral Galette N noelle konrad healthy eating
othing is more fun than playing with your food. It’s something kids love to do and secretly adults do too, only instead of a sticky mess, I like to make spirals. I was thrilled when I finally figured out how to make a tasty and flaky gluten free pie crust. It is not as easy as it sounds. This one also has very little sugar and can easily be made vegan, which leaves room for the fruit to take over the sweetness. With my pie crust ready to go, it left me with a world of possibilities of what I wanted to put on top. I decided to go with succulent peaches, pretty purple plums, and vibrant blueberries. The best part about this dessert is you can make it ahead of time and then reheat it before eating. The kitchen is my creative space and I love when I am baking. Seeing my friends and family lick their forks after dessert makes me think of a tasty job well done. INGREDIENTS 2 cup gluten free all purpose flour ½ cup coconut flour 2 sticks of very cold butter 1 tsp salt 2 tsp sugar 6-8 tbsp cold water 2 peaches

2 plums ¼ cup fresh blueberries Pinch of brown sugar 1 egg for egg wash DIRECTIONS 1. First of all, place the two butter sticks into the freezer for 15 minutes. 2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. In a large mixing bowl combine flour, salt, and sugar. Mix well. 4. Once butter is sufficiently frozen, grate the stick into the flour mixture scraping off any that butter that sticks to the grater. 5. With a wooden spoon begin pressing the cold butter into the flour until well combined. 6. Add the water and knead the dough with hands (if it is too dry add water 1 tbsp at a time) 7. Grease a pie pan with coconut oil. 8. Place dough in the dish and press out evenly with fingers. 9. Slice the fruit into thin strips and arrange in a spiral. 10. Fill the middle with whole fresh blueberries. 11. Sprinkle brown sugar over the top and bush everything with egg wash. 12. Place in oven and bake for 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown. 13. Serve warm, top with vanilla ice cream, and enjoy.

ABCs ith summer vacation winding down, it’s time to focus on how to prepare for the new school year. Here’s a checklist of some of the most common recommendations we make for families, the ABCs of a healthy start back to school.
night, so we need to start encouraging them to set an alarm to wake up at the same time every day. Preteens should get to bed by 8:30 p.m. That gives them 30 minutes to fall asleep and about 10 hours to sleep by the time they have to get up for school. If they need to wake up earlier, they should go to bed earlier as well. For teens, aim for a 9 p.m. bedtime, which means no more late-night TV or texting. I suggest that your teen go to bed 15 minutes earlier each night until the best bedtime is reached. And remember, avoid screen time when it’s time to sleep. Texting, gaming or watching on any-size screen make it hard to settle down well at bedtime.
A LIST OF IMMUNIZATIONS TO UPDATE
CUT OUT THE JUNK FOOD
of a healthy start back to school
W Chris Palkowski, MD Physician-in-chief Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center
One of the best ways to predict successful outcomes for the school year is by making sure your child is emotionally and physically healthy. Children who miss school because of illness often fall behind and have a hard time catching up to the rest of the class. Ensuring your child has the proper immunizations can protect him or her from common childhood diseases throughout the school year. Most school-aged children receive several required vaccinations at ages 4 or 5, just before entering kindergarten. Students entering 7th grade also must have the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) booster shot before entering school. A Tdap vaccination protects against whooping cough, a highlycontagious bacterial disease that can cause children to make a whooping sound as they gasp for breath. Other immunizations can protect against meningitis, chicken pox, Hepatitis A and B, measles, mumps and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). A flu vaccine (available starting in October) can also prevent your child from catching influenza, which is a highly contagious virus, and can help ward off outbreaks at school sites and in the home. Good hand washing and hand hygiene is another important way to avoid illness. Many children get out of those habits over the summer, but they will be important as kids get back together into classrooms and playgrounds together. Every year we see a rise in sick children in our pediatrics offices within a few days of each school starting. Vaccination and hand hygiene can go a long way in saving you and your child a trip to the doctor’s office! BEGIN TO GET PLENTY OF REST
We all know that summer throws off a child or teenager’s schedule because so many of them stay up late at night. Now is a good time to get your child on a regular bedtime schedule to transition for school. Children need at least eight to ten hours a sleep a
32
August 2016
A healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables throughout the day, will help children stay fit, trim and keep them energized during class. Start the day with a healthy, high protein breakfast to reduce the urge to snack later on less nutritious items such as chips and cookies. Children also need a healthy lunch to sustain them throughout the afternoon. One of the most important things parents need to watch for when packing a school lunch is avoiding foods that are high in sugar. Pack a bottle of water rather than juice or soda. Make sandwiches using whole-grain breads. Opt for low- or non-fat dairy products. If your child eats lunch in the school cafeteria, see what healthy options are available, such as salad bars, fresh fruit and foods lower in sodium and fat. If the cafeteria lacks nutritious options, pack a healthy lunch for your child. DEAL WITH STRESS
For some students, the school year may bring on stress. There are common reasons: new teachers or classmates, the possibility of being bullied, trying out for sports programs, and, in some cases, a new school. Stress can be normal, but if it happens too often or lasts too long, it can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, back pain and trouble sleeping. It can also make your child moody, depressed or tense. Talk to your children about how they are feeling as they get closer to starting school. Make sure they know that there are ways to deal with their stress. Help them to unwind with a hobby or a good book. Offer to work through problems together. If they are unwilling or uncomfortable speaking with you, suggest they talk to a school counselor or find a professional mental-health specialist for them to see. The healthier children are, the better learners they will be.
