t’s one of the most popular events in the Valley during the holidays and it’s ready to lure in even more visitors this year, but what may stand out the most about Santa Fly In and Winter Fun Land (Dec. 10 and 11) is how well it brings the community together. To be sure, this is a bona fide family outing. Bring the entire clan. The Palm Springs Air Museum and McDonaldsShalhoub Family, which presents the hol-
iday favorite for all ages, encourages it, in fact. As in previous years, we can expect a weekend filled with treats and goody bags upon Santa’s highly anticipated arrival. Meanwhile, children (and even adults) can play in the snow in the Winter Fun Land portal. (We’re told the snow came from the North Pole and we are not about to argue this fact.) Take note: the fun-inthe-snow romps run until 3 p.m. Good news: Santa stays as long as there
are children in line who want to pose with the benevolent guy and, of course, nab a goody bag in the process. Even better news: Children 12 and under are free with a playing adult. The event takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10 and 11, at The Palm Springs Air Museum, 745 N. Gene Autry Trail, Palm Springs. For more information, visit, palmspringsairmuseum.org.

f baskets could talk they would tell us many things - who gathered the materials and carefully prepared them, who patiently wove them with intricate designs, what they were made to hold and carry, what their beautiful and creative designs mean. The baskets in this exhibition come from southern California and especially from Cahuilla territory. Today, there are only a few Cahuilla basket weavers who produce baskets with traditional methods and designs. Their work is in great demand and Cahuilla baskets, new and old, are highly valued in collections around the world. Some of these baskets are on exhibit
for the first time in our 25 year history, including the very first basket that was accessioned into the Museum’s collections. Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is located at 219 South Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs. The Museum is open September through May - Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and June through August - Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the Museum is free. In 1990 the Broadway rendition was nominated for Tony Awards for Best Musical; Best Book, Hugh Wheeler; Best Original Score, Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane; and Best Choreography. Meet Me In St. Louis shares the story of the Smith family as they each find their way living in St. Louis, Missouri. The patriarch, played by J. Steger Thompson, and matriarch, played by Suzie Wourms, are raising their five children in American traditions. Their love and loyalties are tested when Mr. Smith announces he is moving the family to New York. Family members include Lizzie Schmelling as Esther; Kate Antonov as Rose; Sadie Paiz as Tootie; Natalia Fernandez as Agnes; and Abel Rodriguez as Lon. The story reaches its climax on Christmas Eve, and ends with a picturesque finale at the 1904 World’s Fair. Memorable songs include “The Boy Next Door,” “A Raving Beauty,” “The Trolley Song,” “Have Yourself a
Merry Little Christmas,” “Whenever I’m with You,” and “A Day in New York.” Meet Me in St. Louis is directed by Dr. William “Bill” Layne. Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Donates to Five Charities
The Palm Springs City Council voted on Wednesday, Nov. 30 to move forward new rules that would strengthen the City’s Vacation Rental Ordinance and allow for the formation of a Vacation Rental Compliance Department. One of the key changes approved includes a limit of 32 annual contracts a home can be rented. The new rules also place restrictions on the number of vacation rental permits an individual or business can own. In addition, rental compliance fines would increase along with fines for failing to report rental agreements to the City. The new rules will be managed and enforced by a Vacation Rental Compliance Department, funded by permit fees. The proposed new Ordinance is expected to be formally adopted at the Dec. 7 City Council meeting. “The City Council’s goal is that this new Ordinance will continue to meet the need for alternative visitor lodging while maintaining neighborhood quality of life in the City of Palm Springs for both full and part-time residents,” said City Manager David H. Ready.

Light Up the Season
Over a million twinkling lights illuminate The Living Desert
W
ildLights at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, one of the Coachella Valley’s most adored and sparkling holiday traditions, returns with festivities from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. WildLights at The Living Desert continues on select nights through Dec. 24. A beautiful zoo and gardens by day, WildLights, presented by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation, transforms The Living Desert into an amazing winter wonderland with over a million colorful, twinkling holiday lights and light displays. New this year, WildLights guests will enjoy a luminescent herd of animal lanterns including two adult giraffes, one baby giraffe, two zebras and three cheetahs, with the tallest standing 16 feet. A “snowy” Whoville winter wonderland, also new this year, will offer guests the chance to have “snowball” fights and play in the frosty white, artificial snow for a two-dollar entrance fee. Plus, favorite holiday movies will play throughout the evening in the Village WaTuTu outdoor theater. Back by popular demand, the brilliant tunnel of lights continues to dazzle, allowing guests to stroll under a canopy of glittering lights, blinking and flashing to holiday music. Visitors will enjoy holiday themed entertainment, visits with Santa Claus, wildlife encounters, camel
and carousel rides. The more than 3,300 feet of G-scale model train track will be thoughtfully decorated and is a sight notto-be missed. Enjoy holiday music and live entertainment by local artists and bands. Tasty food and beverages are also offered for purchase. “WildLights is a wonderful holiday tradition and this year we are delighted to be adding even more exciting features for our guests to enjoy,” said Allen Monroe, President & CEO of The Living Desert. “Not only is it fulfilling to see families enjoying the holiday spirit, but every time someone visits The Living Desert, they help further our mission to save endangered species.” WildLights is underwritten by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation and sponsored by the City of Indian Wells. WildLights is open Dec. 9 – 10, and Dec. 16 – 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with last admission at 8: 30 p.m. The park closes at 9 p.m. Admission to WildLights is $10 for adults, $8 for members, children and military (with ID) and children under three are free. There Won’t be Another Camelot Portman drills deep to the dark, complex core of ‘Jackie’
Natalie Portman as first lady Jacqueline Kennedy By Neil Pond
M
ore than 50 actresses have portrayed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis on TV and in the movies, including Jacqueline Bissett, Blair Brown, Katie Holmes, Gennifer Goodwin, Roma Downey, Minka Kelly and Gilda Radner on Saturday Night Live. But everyone else might as well just put away the pink Chanel suit and pillbox hat, because now Natalie Portman owns the role. In the simply titled Jackie, the Oscarwinning actress delivers a powerful, awards-worthy performance as the former first lady, focused on the days after the assassination of her husband, John F. Kennedy, in November 1963. The movie unfolds through the framing device of Jackie’s flashback recollections, as told to a Life magazine reporter (Billy Crudup) interviewing her for an exclusive after the event, during which she reminds him that “people like to believe in fairy tales.” The movie dives into the mind of the
grieving Jackie as she deals with the emotional fallout of the loss of her husband, his legacy, and of her place in a world— now without him—as a Kennedy-in-law. It’s not a conventional biography, or even a historical drama. It’s deeper and darker than that, and Portman bores down to the complex, most challenging parts of its core. Portman anchors every scene, surrounded by an exceptional supporting cast. Peter Sarsgaard plays Bobby Kennedy, her grieving brother-in-law. Greta Gerwig is Nancy Tuckerman, Jackie’s loyal White House social secretary. John Carroll Lynch does a fine job as Texan Vice President Lyndon Johnson, swept into the Oval Office after the tragic campaign motorcade in Dallas, Texas. Beth Grant is his wife, Ladybird. John Hurt, as a priest at a cemetery, gets to the heart of the movie, and Jackie, in a conversation during which she reveals her fears and anxieties. Danish actor Caspar Phillipson plays JFK, and he’s well cast, but you don’t

see very much of him. This is Portman’s film, and the camera locks onto her like it doesn’t want to let her go. The movie does a terrific job of recreating scenes that live in history from newspaper photos and newsreels, such as the swearing in of President Johnson aboard Air Force One and Kennedy’s funeral. Moments of Jackie alone, removing her bloodied pantyhose, looking for Kennedy’s burial site in the rain and mud at Arlington, smoking cigarettes she didn’t want the public to see, or simply wandering around her empty bedroom, alone, are haunting. The “fairy tale” that Jackie lived at the White House, the movie suggests, was like the one depicted in the legends of King Arthur and his legendary castle, Camelot—noble, idealistic and romantic, laden with symbolism, and potent with the stuff of myth. In one moving and melancholy scene, Jackie tries on several outfits—and gets progressively more inebriated—while the iconic theme from the
classic Broadway musical Camelot plays on her stereo. “Don’t let it be forgot,” she tells her interviewer, “that for one brief, shining moment, there was a Camelot.” She pauses before adding, “There won’t be another Camelot.” And there won’t be another Jackie like Natalie Portman, at least anytime soon.
