Desert Art Festival showcases artists’ original works at Frances Stevens Park

olor and creativity collide at the 32nd annual Desert Art Festival, to be held at Frances Stevens Park.

The popular festival features the original works of a myriad artists. Expect creative offerings in two and three-dimensional fine art, including paintings in acrylic, oils and watercolor, photography, etching, mixed media, sculpture in clay, glass, metal, stone and wood. Each artist will be present to meet with the public to discuss their work. All work is available for purchase.

This year’s featured artist is Hans Kegler, a plein air painter. Kegler says “My work and passion is to strive for capturing subtle colors and the regions glowing light”. Much of Kegler’s paintings depict scenes of southern California. “Since the 1890’s accomplished early California artists along with the painters of today have been inspired by these mountains and its diverse wildlife as subjects for their work. This area contains vast distinct

communities ranging from fresh water aquatic habitats and coastal lagoons to oak woodlands and savannas, and from dry deserts to snow capped peaks”. Keglers work can be found in vast collections of corporations and private individuals.

In addition to fine art, fine crafts will also be presented. Festival patrons will find blown glass, turned wood, semi-precious jewelry, pottery, stained glass, and an array of high-quality crafts.

Frances Stevens Park is located at 538 N. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, at the corner of Palm Canyon and Alejo. The hours of the event are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission and parking are free. The event is handicap accessible.

WildLights at The Living Desert

W

ildLights at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, one of the Coachella Valley’s most adored and sparkling holiday traditions, returns on Friday, Nov. 25 with festivities from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and continues on select nights through Dec. 24.

New this year, WildLights guests will enjoy a luminescent herd of animal lanterns including two adult giraffes, one baby giraffe, two zebras and three

cheetahs. The brilliant tunnel of lights continues to dazzle, allowing guests to stroll under a canopy of glittering lights, blinking and flashing to holiday music.

Visitors will enjoy holiday themed entertainment, visits with Santa Claus, wildlife encounters, camel and carousel rides.

The Art of Shopping In the Coachella Valley

hen it’s done right, shopping can truly be elevated to a form of high art. The Coachella Valley provides the ideal painter’s palette of color and texture for you to personalize with your own brushstrokes of style. As long as you are equipped with a slight sense of adventure, shopping can become a glorious gateway to cultural exploration and design discovery, especially when applied to the desert canvas.

Fashion

Stores featuring clothing and shoes flex their fashion muscle at multiple venues ranging from bargain to designer, La Quinta to Palm Springs and traditional to trendy. Designer Trina Turk, a Palm Springs resident, has a high end boutique for men and women (and home décor) in Palm Springs. Who’s Next is a trendy new addition to downtown, with colorful, summer “cotton clothes with stretch.”

Owner Benjamin Perdereau lived in Aix Provence in southern France and brings European flair to resort wear for both men and women.

Just about every top designer will be found at Sak’s Fifth Avenue on El Paseo in Palm Desert for more of a one-stop fashion shop, especially geared for designer clothing aficionados and accessory addicts with an eye toward high style.

Sak’s Fifth Avenue’s discounted counterpart, Sak’s OFF 5th, made its desert debut this past September as the anchor store for El Paseo Square, situated between Highway 111, El Paseo, Lupine Lane and San Pablo Avenue. The powerful “clearinghouse” store with designer duds at reduced prices occupies 25,000 square feet on the south side of Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, which many recall was formerly the location of Office Max. The store is the Coachella Valley’s first Sak’s OFF 5th store, with the next nearest at the Desert Hills Premium Outlets in Cabazon.

Other first-class clothing and shoe mainstays on El Paseo – the “Rodeo Drive” of the desert - include Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Escada, St. John, Kate Spade New York and Coach, complemented by numerous other more moderately priced favorites, like Banana Republic, Eileen Fisher, Brooks Brothers, Talbots and Tommy Bahama (which has a restaurant upstairs when you are ready for a refreshment break).

More specialized stores and boutiques are found at Westfield Palm Desert, such as Victoria’s Secret, Express and Charlotte Russe; in Old Town La Quinta, such as Le Chateau Boutique, Tarah Jade and elizabeth&prince; and at The River at Rancho Mirage, including Hats Unlimited and Forever 21.

Kohl’s, Macy’s and J.C.Penney, all located in Palm Desert, are also reliable stalwarts for just about any type of clothing, shoes, undergarments or accessories,

shopping often with holiday or special sales, large inventory and extended hours.

Stein Mart, with its opening in the Rancho Las Palmas center on the corner of Bob Hope Drive and Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, has helped to revitalize the shopping hub where Von’s used to be. The store is the third in the valley (others are in Palm Springs and La Quinta) and is best known for clothing, shoes, accessories, housewares and gifts.

Jewelry

Jewelry stores abound throughout the desert, with most concentrated in and around in Palm Desert. One of the most well-known, not only for high quality diamonds harvested in India but also for owner Raju Mehta’s commitment to local charities, El Paseo Jewelers offers spectacular one of a kind pieces. Others nearby include Gail Jewelers, b. Alsohn’s, Ozel, Roberto Coin, Pandora, Tiffany & Co. and Leeds & Son, which is well known for its Rolex watch selection and in-store events.

Price points at these fine jewelers can easily reach 5 and 6 figures, however additional selections are available at Westfield Palm Desert stores such as Kay Jewelers and Kevin Jewelers and at Smoke Tree Jewelers in Palm Springs.

Gourmet Food and Grocery

To meet greater demand by residents and visitors alike, gourmet food and grocery stores have sprouted up in multiple locations. Trader Joes, the standard bearer for many years, has maintained a following at both their Palm Desert and Cathedral City locations. However, with the announcement that they are closing their doors by 2017, customers looking for organic produce, imported cheeses, elaborate desserts, and fine wines have turned to Bristol Farms and, more recently, Whole Foods, both in Palm Desert.

Jensen’s Finest Foods in Palm Springs is known for its exceptional meats and wines, and the upscale Gelson’s market has now made its foray into the desert by staking out the corner of Bob Hope Drive and Gerald Ford Drive in Rancho Mirage.

Jules Market recently opened in La Quinta to create more of a friendly, neighborhood shopping experience, and Aldi, part of an international chain of “discount gourmet” markets, is now open at Gene Autry and Ramon in Palm Springs as well as in Palm Desert and La Quinta.

If it’s prime meat, giant apple pies or cases of soda you are looking for, many residents swear by Costco - which requires a simple membership - at the Rancho Mirage/Palm Desert border, just off the I-10

freeway. There are numerous traditional grocery stores throughout the area, including Albertson’s, Stater Bros., Ralph’s and its discount counterpart, Food4Less.

Art

The art scene can be found primarily at each end of the desert. Indio, which is not only the Valley’s oldest city, established in 1930, and is also best known as host to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival each spring, has come to be identified as a creative center for artistic expression. The Coachella Valley Art Center, owned and curated by the multifaceted Bill Schinsky, is a gallery as well as a working studio, and it embraces and expands upon the numerous displays of local public art such as the Indio Mural Project on city walls which chronicle the Valley’s path to prosperity and growth throughout its history.

And, once again, El Paseo in Palm Desert features popular gallery venues such as CODA Gallery and Hohmann Fine Art, open late at the monthly El Paseo Art Walk.

Palm Springs boasts a wide variety of art galleries. The Uptown Design District, a few blocks north of the heart of downtown, includes signature galleries that focus on mid-century modern, like The Art of Nat Reed gallery. The artist and owner of Elena Bulatova Fine Art has situated herself smack in the middle of downtown, across from the Hyatt Palm Springs.

The Backstreet Art District in Palm Springs is also a thriving hub of artistowned galleries and working studios.

Located on and around Cherokee on the south end of Palm Canyon Drive, the District holds “Art Walk” on the first Wednesday evening every month, where visitors can browse and buy art.

Perez Road in Cathedral City houses other art attractions, such as Colliding Worlds Fine Art, curated by owner, television and radio host and artist Angela Valente Romeo.

Home Décor and Furniture

Art morphs easily into the realm of home décor and furniture in most of the Palm Springs showrooms and galleries, again celebrating mid-century modern with a pleasing vengeance. Stores such as Modern Way, Christopher Anthony Ltd., Boulevard and Resuscitate offer impressive selections of furniture, art, décor, home accessories and rugs for all tastes and budgets, including vintage, modern and mid-century designs.

Hobby Lobby has also been added to the lineup of anchors in the Rancho Las Palmas shopping center in Rancho Mirage, specializing in craft supplies and gifts.

Just Fabulous also deserves mention.

Located in downtown Palm Springs, nestled in between restaurants, shops, boutique hotels, coffee houses and bars, it has become the premier location for celebrity book signings, with authors like Stefanie Powers, Gavin MacLeod and Anne Rice holding events. Owner Stephen Monkarsh has developed the store into a combination gallery, bookstore and first class gift emporium. It emanates a contemporary and sophisticated yet relaxed vibe that draws crowds especially during the holidays. There’s a heavy emphasis on mid-century modernism, architecture, travel and Hollywood.

For cigars, pipes, humidors and all types of tobacco products, shoppers can visit Palm Desert Tobacco on El Paseo in Palm Desert, Fame Wine and Cigar Lounge in downtown Palm Springs or One Stop Smoke Shop also in Palm Springs.

Sporting Goods

It’s not a huge surprise that there are dozens of stores throughout the valley that specialize in golf equipment and attire, starting with every major hotel and country club which usually have their own golf shops. Other popular golf and tennis stores include Pete Carlson’s Golf & Tennis on Highway 111 in Palm Desert, PGA Tour Superstore also in Palm Desert and Golfsmith in Rancho Mirage.

Products encompassing a wider cross section of athletic activities may be found at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Palm Desert, Big 5 Sporting Goods at several cities throughout the desert.

A favorite for runners and walkers is Running Wild in Palm Springs, a specialty store which features footwear, apparel, workout gear, bags and packs, located just south of downtown in the Sun Center.

Magic at McCallum

From super-troupin’ ABBA grooves to a hip ukulele wizard, this Valley stage shines with diverse acts in December

T

he smash hit “Mamma Mia!” will be performed five times Dec. 2-4 at Palm Desert’s McCallum Theatre during the show’s “Farewell Tour.” It’s the story of one mother, one daughter and three possible dads.

ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus created this “ultimate feel good show” that combines an enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship with some of ABBA’s greatest hits, including “Dancing Queen,” “S.O.S.,” “Super Trouper,” “Take a Chance on Me” and “Winner Takes It All.” The show won more awards than I knew existed. For example, not only did it get nods for aGrammy, Golden Globe, MTV and People’s Choice awards, it was recognized by Women Film Critics Circle, AARP Movies for Grownups, Jupiter (UK), BAFTA (UK), American Cinema Editors, Irish Film & TV Awards and even a Razzie and a Golden Schmoes Award, to mention only a few.

The Uke Wizard Hawaii’s ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukaro plays the McCallum Theatre one night only, Tuesday, Nov. 29, demonstrating his amazing dexterity and eclectic musicianship which has made him famous the world over and spread interest in ukulele playing.

Jake Shimabukaro In 2006, his YouTube viral performance of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” received over 14 million views.

He has been declared “the Paganini of the ukulele” and has been called a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone magazine, who likened him to musical icons Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. He also is known for his masterful interpretations of songs by Sting, Leonard Cohen, George Harrison, Adele, Queen and many others.

McCallum’s Magnificent ‘Music’ Stellar talent, new concepts enhance new production of ‘The Sound of Music’

I

t promises to be one of the more memorable events of the season, but “The Sound of Music,” which unfolds in all of its musical splendor Nov. 22 at McCallum Theatre, will stand out for so many other reasons.

For starters, the new national touring production is directed by three-time Tony Award-winner Jack O’Brien. Add to that a dashing Captain Georg von Trapp (played

by Ben Davis) and a soul-stirring Maria (newcomer Kerstin Anderson), and you have the makings of a memorable outing.

O’Brien had this to say about his leading lady: “In looking over a great American classic, like ‘The Sound of Music,’ sometimes you stumble on something you wonder if anyone ever saw before. For instance, I was privileged to actually see Mary Martin in the original production—as I was myself just a junior at the University of Michigan. She was a great star, and she was giving a ‘great star’s’ performance. She was at the apex of her career, and she was both brilliant and 46 years old.”

But in reading it privately, something caught O’Brien’s eye.

“Maria is probably, as a postulant, no more than six or seven years older than Liesl,” he adds. “She may be many things—a country lass, a climber-of-trees, a young renegade, but she is clearly not an established star! How interesting.

O’Brien also notes that he’s always believed Maria was a ‘star-making’ part, rather than the leading role most people remember from the movies. So he went looking for someone with star-making magic.

“And in through the audition door one day walked Kerstin Anderson, still studying at Pace University in New York,” he says.

“She opened her mouth, she sang, and the tears welled up in my eyes. If ever there were an enchanting young woman standing on the brink of discovery— this was it.

And now, the discovery is about to be all of ours. Please, as I do—welcome her.”

According to director Jack O’Brien, “The Sound of Music” has been in our ears for decades, as it deserves to be. “But it might be time to look once more, and more closely, at this remarkable work which, I feel, begins to reveal itself as deeper, richer, and more powerful than ever,” he notes. “It’s no longer ‘your mother’s’ ‘Sound of Music.’ We are tearing off the varnish of the past from one of the great glories of our theatergoing experience and making it fresh. This is an opportunity we’ve all longed to create.”

er Soleil is a label established by the Wagner Family who began developing wines in 1915 in Napa Valley California. Their wines include the world renowned powerhouse label Caymus, in addition to Conundrum, Red Schooner, and Emmolo. Charlie F. Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son Chuck Wagner established Caymus in 1972. In 1988 Chuck started growing grapes in the cooler coastline of the Santa Lucia Highlands. In 2001 Mer Soleil Chardonnay was developed by Chuck’s eldest son, Charlie F. Wagner II. Mer Soleil gets its name from two prominent natural growing conditions of the Santa Lucia Highlands, sea (mer) and sun (soleil). CHER I prefer drinks with big, bold flavors so was excited to taste the 2014 Mer Soleil Chardonnay from the Santa Lucia Highlands. The wine had a rich golden color from being aged in oak with a citrus nose. If you like a buttery, fruit forward Chardonnay then this wine is for you. It is a creamy, easy drinkable wine with flavors of stone fruits and vanilla. It is a delicious wine to open a bottle to drink with friends. It’s sweet liquid gold!

DeANN The Wagner Family has a real hit with their 2014 Mer Soleil Reserve Chardonnay created from grapes in the Santa Lucia Highlands.

The wine had me at hello, well actually as soon as I put my nose to the glass. It’s powerful fruity fragrance is hard to resist. I knew I would have to eventually take my nose out of the glass and actually taste the wine. I’ve never done that with any wine before so I

knew this one was going to be special. For me the wine came across as velvety smooth and very complex. It is a very intriguing wine as the stone fruits seem so well disguised. Did you know this? Conditions in the Santa Lucia Highlands allow for a “slow ripening” effect on the grapes, allowing the winery to harvest them later than northern appellations and achieve an intense concentration of character and flavor in the wine.

JULES The aromatics of this 2014 Mer Soleil Reserve Chardonnay were strong fruit scents of white peach and pear. At initial tasting the fruit came through but so did hints of vanilla and warm smooth spices from the oak aging process. This creamy, buttery wine delivers on its golden color like the sun, as its name suggests. It is a medium to full-bodied wine with some structure but it wasn’t bold or heavy. It is nicely balanced and was hand-stirred while it aged in French oak, that personal care for this wine really comes through. This Chardonnay is drinkable now but could be held for a year or so to be enjoyed later. However, you may want to buy now while you can find it, I think this will be a popular wine with Chardonnay lovers.

SUZE I really enjoyed this 2014 Mer Soleil Chardonnay. At first you can smell the butteriness and then upon tasting, it is very creamy. It was soft on my tongue and had a hint of pear. Delicious! Because I prefer a Chardonnay that is creamy and non-acidic, this one fit the bill. I could easily drink this all by itself or with a meal. I’m learning that Malolactic Fermentation, which is how this wine was processed, helps make a wine creamy and non-acidic, as does oak barrel aging, versus aging in stainless steel. Now that I know this, I know what to look for on the label. When I’m perusing the aisles at Bev Mo or Trader Joes, I will definitely look for the Malolactic Fermentation process, (if the label would possibly say so), Oak barreling and grapes from the San Lucia Highlands in California. They say this area is prime for producing this type of creamy, bit of fruitiness, medium body chardonnay. I love it.

‘Harry Potter’ 2.0?

Why ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is a fitting afterlife to the mesmerizing film franchise

T

he “boy wizard” Harry Potter exited the movies in 2011 after a $10 billion box-office run of eight hugely popular films. But he never really left.

Author J.K. Rowling kept the character alive and well in a London stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and in new tales on her Potterworld website.

And the legacy certainly thrives in Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them, a spin-off “prequel” that takes place 70 years before the events depicted in the first Harry Potter movie.

Written and co-produced by Rowling and directed by David Yates, who also directed the final four Harry Potter flicks—is the story of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a young Hogwarts-trained “magizoologist” who comes to New York City in 1926 on a mission to “rescue, nurture and protect” the world’s magical creatures.

Newt is also documenting his travels, like a wizard-ing Charles Darwin, for a book that will be called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them—which will also, decades later, become one of Harry Potter’s textbooks.

But the Big Apple isn’t a very hospitable place, at that particular time, particularly for wizards. As Nazi fascism spreads abroad, the dark specter of an evil wizardwarlord, Gellert Grindelwald, looms even larger, and the public views anyone with any twinkle of magical abilities with fear and suspicion. A sect of witch-hunting fanatics, the Second Salemers, rallies to ferret out wizards in New York City, putting America’s own benevolent Magical Congress on the defensive.

So when some of Newt’s “beasts” get loose from his carry-on, it creates quite a stir, and sets off something like a 1920s version of the game Pokèmon Go as Newt scurries and scrambles trying to find them all.

In a movie called Fantastic Beasts, you’d expect some fantastic beasts, and you can indeed find them here. There are teeny green Bowtruckles, whimsical, shy, plant-like sprouts that can come in quite

handy, if you’ve got a lock to pick. The regal Thunderbird, an enormous avian creature (Hippogriff in later Potter lore), can sense danger and create storms. The primate-like Demiguise has shiny silver fur, when he’s not invisible. An Occomy, a plumed, dragon-like bird, hatches from pure silver eggs worth a fortune and can grow—or shrink—to any size, filling up a department store or diving into a teacup.

The Erumpent, a love-stuck, rhino-like behemoth, has a gigantic glowing horn.

Percival Graves (Colin Farrell), the director of security for the Magical Congress, comes down hard on Newt for smuggling creatures into the states—but, as his last name suggests, Graves may also have other, hidden, more sinister motives. Katherine Waterson is Tina, a witch who becomes Newt’s ally. Alison Sudol, from TV’s Transparent, plays Tina’s equally magical sister and roommate, Queenie.

Ezra Miller is Credence Barebone, a troubled young man with a painful past. Tony Award-winning Broadway actor Dan Fogler steals his scenes as Jacob Kowalski, a loveable-lug “No-Mag” (non-magical) factory worker, World War I veteran and as-

piring baker exposed to the world of magic through his new friendship with Newt.

Fantastic Beasts will delight Harry Potter fans who’ve been pining for more bigscreen magic for six years. It has moments of humor, whimsy and fun, and it creates a new world of characters and detail. But its overall tone is dark, casting its fantasy adventure against a very serious backdrop of dread, paranoia and oppression that recalls not only history’s long shadows but also many of today’s pitched, polarized emotions. And it seems like a Hollywood fizzle when a movie so rich in wizardly wonders and escapist marvel builds to a standard, blockbuster-y blowout, with 10 minutes of crashing, CGI destruction and noise. Yes, a major city gets demolished once again, and yet no one seems to get seriously injured or killed—just like in almost every modern superhero smash-fest.

Early in the film, Tina watches Newt catch one of his creatures, place it back in his grip and quickly snap it shut. “What else have you got in there?” she asks him.

A lot! And in more ways than one— there are four more Beasts movies planned. Expect to see a lot more of Newt,

Tina, Queenie and Jacob.

Redmayne, an Oscar-winning actor, is fine in his role—gangly, earnest, a bit bumbling, striking the right tones as a scientist devoted to his work and his precious supernatural subjects. But Newt’s valise: Man, that’s one crazy road case, and it deserves its own star billing. It holds his magical menagerie, all his clothes and toiletries, and it serves as the portable portal to his fabulous, other-dimensional workshop, lab and zoo. And somehow it’s a zip to get through customs.

All That Jazz

The Phil Norman Tentet to perform in Palm Desert

T

he Phil Norman Tentet will perform at Pete Carlson’s Golf & Tennis’ Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 26. The Phil Norman Tentet is the best of mid-size jazz bands that finds new and illuminating ways to perform cool, modern, west coast jazz.

Performing authentic jazz for over 15 years the Tentet combines sounds from bands like Miles Davis “Birth of the Cool” and west coast jazz bands of the ’50s, and explores new ideas from many modern day arrangers and composers like Bob Florence, Dave Pell, Alan Broadbent, Roger Neumann, Kim Richmond, Tom Kubis, Dan Higgins and others. Phil Norman’s idea as the tentet leader is to have a small group instrumental sound that uses different tempos, arrangers, and soloists playing jazz standards and original compositions.

The Phil Norman Tentet recently released their eighth CD entitled “Then and Now”. It is a collection of 12 of the most well-known jazz compositions played with a contemporary sound. The recording is currently receiving top airplay of the most recent recorded CDs across the nation according to “Jazz Week”.

Art on Main Street in Old Town La Quinta

eet over 70 artists showing and selling their original work at Art on Main Street at Old Town La Quinta from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26. Paintings, photography, jewelry, mixed media, sculpture, glass, wood, ceramics, textiles and wearable art including custom-made hats are featured.

Along with returning artists, each show has a different mix of artists rotating through, so there are always new finds to explore, enjoy and take home.

Each art show attracts over 2,000 art enthusiasts, residents and visitors alike.

Meet local artists, enjoy live music and experience La Quinta as the Gem of the Desert. The ambiance of Old Town’s charming cafes, wine bars, beer garden, and boutiques add a unique shopping and dining experience to the day!
