Celebrating All Things Italian!

Desert Arc Brings Italy to Rancho Mirage

T

he 6th Annual Italian Festival is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rancho Mirage at the Rancho Mirage Community Park. Free general parking and shuttles are located at the River. Desert Arc hosts over 40 vendors. This will include some of the Valley’s favorite Italian restaurants and the best Italian food vendors from out of town. There will be plenty of shopping available at specialty merchandise and craft vendors. The Festival will open Saturday at 10am. A stirring rendition of the Italian National Anthem by the Desert Arc Choir with special

guests will get the Main Stage entertainment underway. MC Joey English, the “Voice of the Desert”, will host non-stop entertainment that features performances by many of the festival favorites as well as some engaging new performers. Festivalgoers can experience or join in with the Tarantella, a folk dance of Italy. Also, joining the main stage this year is Celebrity Chef Gino Campagna. Chef Gino is a feature of the hit A&E show “Born This Way”. He will be hosting food competitions and cooking presentations throughout the festival.

A new addition is the Mercato.

You will find available for purchase authentic Italian products in the marketplace and see food demonstrations such as pasta making, olive oil tasting and so much more!

Come on out and enjoy “La Dolce Vita” with all of the rich culture and traditions of Italy!

General Admission is $10. VIP Ticket is $50 and includes entrance to the VIP lounge plus amenities. Kids 10 and under are free.

Free parking and free shuttle from the River. We expect to welcome 3-5,000 attendees.

Desert Arc is one of the largest and oldest non-profit agencies in the Coachella Valley. Now in its

57th year, Desert Arc provides social services, vocational training and employment opportunities for 700 adult clients with disabilities.

Editor’s Note Can you believe this weather we are having? Its perfect for outdoor events this weekend. Let’s start with the Jacqueline Cochran Air Show in Thermal. One of the big highlights is the Patriots Jets Team with six high flying jets. Meanwhile, Cruise Night on El Paseo promises to be a big draw. A part of Palm Desert’s First Weekend, you can expect to see a wide array of classic and custom cars. Don’t forget the City of Rancho Mirage, which will host its Art Affair at the Community Park Saturday and Sunday.

Speaking of the Community Park in Rancho Mirage, Desert Arc will be holding their 6th Annual Italian Festival there on Nov. 12 and 13. Some of the best Italian food

vendors will be on hand—arts and crafts vendors, too. So mark your calendar. Another upcoming event you don’t want to miss is the Desert Living Home Show, Nov. 18 20 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

The United States Navy Band to Perform in Hemet America’s Navy is coming to Hemet, one of 18 cities in seven states to host a performance by the United States Navy Band during its 2016 tour—one of the signature outreach programs of the U.S. Navy.

The United States Navy Band Commodores performance is scheduled for Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Hemet High School.

Jazz is America’s music and the Commodores, the Navy’s premier

jazz ensemble, have been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for more than 40 years. They have appeared on TV shows, played nearly all major jazz festivals and toured across the United States and abroad. This vibrant, dynamic group is constantly striving for musical excellence and the pursuit of new and exciting ways to communicate with their audiences.

One of the U.S. Navy Band’s primary responsibilities involves touring the country. Art Walk, Cruise Night Return to El Paseo El Paseo is kicking off the season, in partnership with the City of Palm Desert First Weekend. El Paseo Cruise Night and Art Walk are a few of the activities comprising this weekend of art, culture, community. The Shops on El Paseo hosts the charitable event “A Miracle on El Paseo”, benefiting Bighorn BAM, as well as a popular holiday 5k run.

Certified Farmers’ Markets Return This Week To welcome back the first wave of seasonal visitors, reward loyal regulars and delight newcomers, all three CFM locations (Palm Desert, Palm Springs and La Quinta) will be handing out 100 free new Certified Farmers’ Market reusable grocery bags at each location, Nov. 5 and 6. Palm Valley School to Host an Evening of Wine Tasting Palm Valley School is hosting a special evening of wine tasting in support of all Palm Valley School students and its Tuition Assistance Program to be held Monday, Nov. 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Toscana Country Club, 76-009 Via Club Villa, Indian Wells.

The word “cookie” is a corruption of the Dutch koekje, meaning “little cake.” But cookies are not a Dutch invention.

Cookie-like confections date to 7th-century Persia, not coincidentally one of the first regions to cultivate sugar cane.

As sugar spread, cookies followed. In the United States, successive waves of immigrants have contributed to our collective cookie jar—a heritage that’s unique even by name, since most English-speaking countries call them “biscuits.”

Speculation has it that many cookies were accidental byproducts of cake baking when bakers tested the temperature of their ovens with small bits of batter. Fanciful cookie shapes date to Medieval Germany, where gingerbread was a high art strictly regulated by guilds.

One of the most famous cookies, the Toll House Cookie, was invented in 1930 by Ruth Wakefield, proprietor of the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. Hoping to devise a chocolate sugar cookie, she chopped bar chocolate into her batter, expecting it to melt. It didn’t. She subsequently licensed her recipe to Nestle.

Vermont Maple Pecan Cookies

These addictive cookies are certain to be the hit of any bake sale or cookie swap. Hearty oats and shredded coconut provide a chewy texture while toasted pecans add crunch. Tightly covered, these cookies will keep 1 week, although they seldom last that long.

• 3 cups old-fashioned oats • 1 cup shredded unsweetened coconut • 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 2 cups packed light brown sugar • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter • 1/2 cup maple syrup • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup • 2 teaspoons baking soda • 1/4 cup boiling water • 1 teaspoon maple flavoring • 2 cups chopped toasted pecans 1. Preheat oven to 300F degrees and position racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Combine oats, coconut, flour, salt, cinnamon and brown sugar in a large bowl; whisk to blend.

3. Combine butter, maple syrup and corn syrup in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat until butter melts, stirring occasionally; remove from heat.

4. Combine baking soda and boiling water, stirring to dissolve. Add to maple syrup mixture, stirring well.

Add maple extract. Stir into dry ingredients. Add pecans; stir well.

5. Place 1/4-cup size balls of dough on baking sheets, 3 inches apart.

Flatten balls slightly.

6. Bake 18 to 20 minutes, until golden brown and set, rotating positions halfway through the baking process. Cool on the baking sheets 5 minutes; transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen cookies.

‘I Voted By Mail’ Mail Ballot Return Reminder The San Bernardino County Elections Office urges voters to return their mail ballots in time for the Nov. 8, Presidential General Election. Voted mail ballots may be returned by mail, but must be postmarked on or before Election Day, Nov. 8, and received within three business days following the election.

Alternatively, voters can deliver

ballots to any one of 29 mail ballot drop-off locations, to one of three early voting sites (Galleria at Tyler, Westfield Palm Desert, Promenade Temecula), or to any of the polling places on Election Day. Did You Know: A Young Boy Wrote a Letter to President Reagan Asking for Federal Funds to Clean His Bedroom?

In 1984, a young boy named Andy Smith came up with a clever scheme to get his room cleaned with minimal effort: he would convince President Ronald Reagan to have his room declared a federal disaster area and then clean his room with the resulting funds. But the president didn’t exactly send folks in biohaz-

Young Andy Smith of Irmo, South Carolina, wrote the following letter to Reagan: “Today my mother declared my bedroom a disaster area.

I would like to request federal funds to hire a crew to clean up my room.”

Unsurprisingly, the Republican president didn’t believe that the public sector should be funding Andy’s room clean-up. Writing back to the 7th grader, Reagan cited the numerous disasters the US government was already dealing with, and offered this instead: “May I make a suggestion? This adminis-

tration, believing that government has done many things that could better be done by volunteers at the local level, has sponsored a Private Sector Initiative program, calling upon people to practice voluntarism in the solving of a number of local problems.”

Go Native! Day at The Living Desert

Celebrate and honor the Coachella Valley’s native plants, animals, and geological and cultural history as The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens hosts the 5th Annual Go Native! Day on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The day will be filled with fun and educational events and activities for the entire family that help highlight the Zoo’s mission of desert conservation. All Go Native! activities are free to members and with paid admission to the zoo.

The first 500 people to celebrate Go Native! Day will receive a free one-gallon Coachella Valley native plant grown from seed at The Living Desert (one per person, while supplies last). And, new this year, a Native Art Walk will feature art by artists inspired by the beauty of the Coachella Valley.

The day will include informative, not-to-missed talks including one on date palms, getting to know our native plants, great ‘alter-natives’ to traditional yard plants, Cahuilla bird songs, as well as a lecture on geology and the San Andreas Fault.

Guests are encouraged to take advantage of the expert tour guides and enjoy a bird walk, native plant walk or heritage hike.

A cactus salad demonstration and tasting and date tasting will be offered. A number of refreshments including Go Native! Tacos, beer, prickly pear lemonade, dates, cactus salad and roasted corn on the cob will be available for purchase.

Pay It Forward! November Fine Forgiveness Month at the Palm Springs Public Library In exchange for nonperishable food items

November begins Fine Forgiveness month at the Palm Springs Public Library. Continuing through the end of the month at the main library only, the Library will forgive outstanding fines up to $50 (if not in collection process) in exchange for nonperishable food items which will all be donated to The Community Food Bank @ The Center, in Palm Springs.

Each nonperishable, non-expired food item donated qualifies for $1.00 off your fines. Anyone who wishes to participate must come into the Library in-person to have any fines or fees forgiven; the customer service staff will forgive fines in exchange for a food donation.

The fines must have been accumulated prior to November 2016; new fines accumulated in November 2016 are not eligible. Any lost items must still be returned or the replacement fee still applies.

As a new feature the library is offering the ‘Pay-It-Forward: Fine Forgiveness for Kids’ where anyone can adopt a child’s fines by donating food or actually paying the fine. There will be turkey shaped signs at the front desk identifying a boy or girl (not their name), their age, and dollar amount of their fine; choose one and then for every item donated on their behalf a dollar will be removed from their fine until it is paid. At the end of the month the library will send out letters to the children that their fines have been paid by generous members of the community.

The Community Food bank appreciates the donations but does have some restrictions and requests. It is best not to donate bulk quantities of rice, flour, or sugar, the Food Bank does not have the repackaging facilities or have the licensing needed to properly distribute such items. They

also ask that you avoid donating items packaged in glass due to breakage concerns. Frequently needed items include canned food items (low sodium: carrots, corn, beats, green beans, and fruit), Peanut butter, Tuna and canned meats, Healthy: soups (low sodium preferred) and cereal (low sugar preferred), as well as pastas, brown rice, whole wheat bread and healthy crackers.

Of course you don’t need to have a fine to donate, all donations are appreciated. So please help us ‘gobble up’ fines this holiday season; helping others and yourself!

Do You Manage Your Medications Safely?

Nov. 6 to 12 is National Senior Safety Week. This year’s campaign aims to raise awareness about safe medication use for seniors. Anyone who takes a number of different medications, as is often the case for seniors, is at risk of making a mistake. These tips should help you prevent unfortunate incidents.

• Make a list of any medication you take (prescribed and over-thecounter), and keep it up-to-date.

Bring it with you whenever you meet with a health professional.

• Get all of your medication from the same pharmacy and consult your pharmacist before star­ ting a new treatment. Whether or not you have a prescription, it’s important to make sure that new medicine won’t interact with anything that you’re currently taking.

• Never share your prescription medication with others, and never take someone else’s me­di­cation.

• Ask your pharmacist about anything you’re unsure of regarding your medication, such as proper dosage and possible side effects, and read the printout that you’re given when your medicine is dispensed.

Residents of the District of Columbia cast their ballots in a presidential election for the first time. The passage of the 23rd Amendment in 1961 gave citizens of the nation’s capital the right to vote for a commander in chief and vice president.

They went on to help Democrat Lyndon Johnson defeat Republican Barry Goldwater in 1964, the next presidential election.

November 4, 1956

A spontaneous national uprising that began 12 days before in Hungary is viciously crushed by Soviet tanks and troops on this day in 1956. Thousands were killed and wounded and nearly a quarter-million Hungarians fled the country.

November 5, 1994

George Foreman, age 45, becomes boxing’s oldest heavyweight champion when he defeats 26-year-old Michael Moorer in the 10th round

of their WBA fight in Las Vegas.

More than 12,000 spectators at the MGM Grand Hotel watched Foreman dethrone Moorer, who went into the fight with a 35-0 record.

Foreman dedicated his upset win to “all my buddies in the nursing home and all the guys in jail.”

The United Nations General Assembly adopts a resolution condemning South Africa’s racist apartheid policies and calling on all its members to end economic and military relations with the country.

On this day, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson stuns the world by announcing his sudden retirement from the Los Angeles Lakers, after testing positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. At the time, many Americans viewed AIDS as a gay white man’s disease.

Johnson (1959- ), who is African American and heterosexual, was one of the first sports stars to go public about his HIV-positive status.

Physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (1845-1923) becomes the first person to observe X-rays, a significant scientific advancement that would ultimately benefit a variety of fields, most of all medicine, by making the invisible visible. Rontgen’s discovery occurred accidentally in his Wurzburg, Germany, lab, where he was testing whether cathode rays could pass through glass when he noticed a glow coming from a nearby chemically coated screen. He dubbed the rays that caused this glow X-rays because of their unknown nature.
