The New Christy Minstrels Under the direction of Randy Sparks at McCallum Theatre

M

cCallum Theatre presents The New Christy Minstrels, still under the direction of Randy Sparks, on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 3 p.m. Founded by Randy Sparks in 1961, The New Christy Minstrels are going strong. Relive the era when Folk Music was on everybody’s record player and songs like “Green, Green” and “Everybody Loves a Saturday Night” were topping the charts. The story of The New Christy Minstrels began at the turn of the ’50s into the ’60s with Randy Sparks, a young singer/guitar player. Randy invented the “big folk group” concept and format in 1961. He sat down with a pen and a notebook and designed his dream group, a blending of the exuberance of The Kingston Trio with the choral harmony of The Norman Luboff Choir. The name came from his reading on the struggles of Stephen Foster, a songwriter with a pile of good ditties that nobody wanted. Stephen solved his problem by leaning on the most popular musical ensemble of his era, Christy’s Minstrels, and shortly became a household name. By 1961, Randy was leading a trio with Jackie Miller and Nick Woods, but he saw an opportunity for a bigger group. He combined his own Randy Sparks Trio with another trio, The Inn Group (John Forsha, Karol Dugan, and Jerry Yester), and added Billy Cudmore on the banjo, and singers Terry Cudmore and Dolan Ellis. The group’s 1962 debut album, Presenting the New Christy Minstrels, won a Grammy, remained on the Billboard charts for two years, and scored a significant hit with “This Land Is Your Land.” The Christys won fans with their per-

formance style – performing as a full ensemble on a certain number of songs, and spotlighting duos and trios on other songs. Their live album In Person captured their concerts in a lively and engaging manner. The New Christy Minstrels, Tall Tales, Legends, and Nonsense captured the group’s versatility and earned enthusiastic reviews. Their 1963 album Ramblin’ was highlighted by the single “Green, Green” which climbed the charts and became a hit single. In 1964, their score for the comedy Advance to the Rear became the first complete soundtrack ever made in the folk music style. The group has seen members come and go over the years, including some who went on to fame on their own including Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes. Today, the New Christy Minstrels consist of Randy Sparks, Becky Jo Benson, Tholow Chan, Dave Deutschendorf, Jennifer Lind, Greg O’Haver, and Dave Rainwater. In 2006, the California State Legislature honored The New Christy Minstrels with resolutions in both the Senate and Assembly. Randy Sparks was recognized for his fifty years in the recording industry, and the group was honored for their contributions to the music industry. In 2009, a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars was dedicated to Randy Sparks and The New Christy Minstrels. Tickets are priced at $67, $47, $37 and $27. Tickets are available at mccallumtheatre. com or by calling the box office at (760) 340ARTS. The McCallum Theatre, 73-000 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert.

T

o kick-off its Ninth season, Dezart Performs will present Casa Valentina, a thoroughly entertaining Tony Award-nominated “dramedy” written by Harvey Fierstein, the multiple Tony Award-winning actor/playwright and American Theatre Hall of Famer. Casa Valentina will run consecutive weekends: Nov. 4, 5, 6 and Nov. 11, 12, 13 at the Pearl McManus Theater at the historic Palm Springs Woman’s Club at 314 S. Cahuilla Road, Palm Springs. “We are thrilled to be presenting this marvelous production to Palm Springs audiences; ours will be only the second engagement for Casa Valentina following its West Coast premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse last spring, so this is a special opportunity for us,” stated Artistic Director Michael Shaw, director of Casa Valentina.

“Presented over Pride Weekend, we think the subject matter of Casa Valentina will delight, entertain and resonate with a broad Palm Springs audience. Harvey Fierstein’s raucous dramedy, Casa Valentina, is a hugely entertaining production that will have audiences buzzing. This 2014-nominated Tony Award production for Best Play, is based on a factual Catskills resort that catered to heterosexual men who delighted in dressing and acting as women. The period piece returns us to the land of dirty dancing and borscht belt comedy, circa 1962. The play transports the audience to an inconspicuous bungalow colony that caters to this very special clientele -- white-collar professionals who discreetly escape their families to spend their weekends safely inhabiting their chosen female alter-egos. Based on real events and infused with Fierstein’s trademark wit, this moving, insightful, and delightfully entertaining work offers a glimpse into the lives of a sorority of “self-made women” as they search for acceptance and happiness in their very own Garden of Eden. Casa Valentina runs Fridays and Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. Matinees, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Pearl McManus Theater (located at the historic Palm Springs Woman’s Club) 314 S. Cahuilla Rd., Downtown Palm Springs. For information and tickets visit, dezartperforms. org or by phone (760) 322-0179.

‘Inferno ’

Tom Hanks runs down another cryptic puzzle

ante—Dante again, says Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) as he gazes into the “face” of the late, great Italian poet of the Middle Ages. “Why always Dante?” Well, it’s not always Dante—but it is this time. And it’s always something involving cloaks, daggers, art, religion and old, cold Mediterranean white guys, as fans of Dan Brown know. Brown is the author who wrote the books Inferno and its two predecessors, The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, both of which were also turned into movies with Hanks in the starring role. Brown created the lead character, Langdon, as sort of his

own fictional alter ego, a globetrotting, puzzle-solving “symbologist” and professor of religious iconography who repeatedly uncovers conspiracies, solves murders and peels back the layers of other murky mysteries. In Inferno, Langdon wakes up in hospital room in Florence, Italy, with amnesia and a bloody head wound. Soon he and his nurse, Sienna (Felicity Jones), are running for their lives from a Terminator-like policewoman (Ana Ularu) and connecting the dots from Renaissanceera painter Sandro Botticelli’s painting of hell, inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, to a plot by billionaire scientist Bertrand Zobrist (Ben Foster), who just committed suicide. Zobrist’s radical idea of over-

population control was “cleansing” the planet by wiping out most of the people on it with a viral-pathogen bomb, which he has timed to go off—tomorrow! Langdon must find the bomb before it’s detonated, and before it’s located by anyone who might try to turn it into a weapon of war, ransom or terrorism. Director Ron Howard, who was also behind the camera for Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, keeps things moving, literally. As they put together the clues that will lead them to the bomb, Langdon and Sienna are constantly on the go—dashing through crowded streets, ducking in and out of cars, taxicabs, trains and planes, and across a gigantic attic, through a garden, over a wall, into side doors, back doors and hidden passageways. Who can Langdon trust? What’s the deal with that dude from Slumdog Millionaire, Jurassic World and The Life of Pi (Irrfan Khan) and his drawer full of knives, and that mystery woman (Danish actress Sidse Babett Knudsen, currently starring in HBO’s Westworld) in Langdon’s unsettling flashbacks? Who knew there were so many unlocked doors in Italy? And the movie never stays put, either. It’s filled with beauty shots of recognizable tourist highlights from all the places Langdon’s search takes him. In Florence, he visits the Baptistry of Saint John and the palatial Palazzo Vecchio; he runs through Boboli Gardens and the Vascri Corridor. A side trip to Venice lets

our characters linger on the steps of St. Mark’s Basilica, pontificating about the history of the four bronze horses standing guard there. In Istanbul, we’re treated to a lovely shot of the walls of Constantinople and the movie’s soggy, splashy climax, which takes place in the subterranean 6th century Basilica Cistern. It all feels like a ridiculously expensive, high-stakes reality-show scavenger hunt, with a preposterously contrived plot twist. And like all of Robert Langdon’s adventures, it takes place in one tidy, 24hour period. Kids, if you want to grow up and see the world, by all means, see the world. If you want to solve puzzles, there are plenty of books of Sudoku and there’s always a daily crossword. I’m just afraid I can’t recommend becoming a symbologist— there’s far too much running involved, it’s very dangerous, and Robert Langdon seems to have the market cornered.
