Palm Springs Air Museum offers fun for the whole family

T

he 9th Annual Chili Cook-Off & Car Rally at the Palm Springs Air Museum on Saturday, Oct. 29, offers Halloween fun for the whole family. Free admission for children 12 and under who wear costumes with paying adult – no masks. You will be excited by the different kinds of cars inside and out. You will also be thrilled as you get up close to dozens of vintage WWII, Korean and Vietnam era aircraft.

Give your taste buds a work out by tasting the different types of homemade chili cooked by museum docents, volunteers and staff. Visitors get to vote for their favorite cars and chili by category. In addition to the chili made by the docents and staff, several restaurants are participating: Las Casuelas Terraza, Frankinbun, Gourmet

Car Show is included with museum admission which ranges from $9.50 $16.50, with a special family rate of $36 for 1 or 2 adults and 3 children age 12 and under; and $46 for 1 or 2 adults and 3 children ages 13 to 17. Car rally hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Car voting ends at 2 p.m.

Chili Tasting starts at 11 a.m. and lasts until 2:30 p.m. or whenever the chili is gone! Chili tastes are just $1 per tasting or six tastes for $5, after paying admission to the Museum. Voting ends at 2:30 p.m. There will also be a raffle. All funds raised from the tastings benefit the Palm Springs Air Museum Volunteer Fund.

Palm Springs Air Museum is an educational non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve and honor veterans while educating future generations. One of the largest collections of flying WWII aircraft, 9,200 volume library, flight simulators and tours through a flyable B-17 are housed in 65,000 square feet of climate controlled space. ‘See Jane Sing’ Jane Lynch to perform solo concert at McCallum Theatre

E

mmy and Golden Globe Award winner Jane Lynch comes to the McCallum Theatre at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, for her Palm Desert solo concert debut in “See Jane Sing.” Fresh from her iconic portrayal of Sue Sylvester on “Glee” and her Broadway debut as Miss Hannigan in “Annie,” Jane will bring her comic skills and musical prowess to the theatre stage. Audiences should prepare for a side-splitting evening of musical comedy, with more than a dash of wit as Jane explores her love of the beauty and absurdity of the American standard and show tune.

Jane Lynch cut her theatrical teeth at The Second City, Steppenwolf Theatre and in many church basements all over the greater Chicago area helping her become the comedic talent she is today.

Jane gained millions of fans as the one-liner powerhouse coach Sue Sylvester in the Golden Globe and SAG Award winning Ryan Murphy television series “Glee.” Her magnificent comedic timing earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, the People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Comedy Actress, and a SAG award nomination. With her wit and luminous stage presence, Jane served as the host for the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

Jane is the host of NBC’s “Hollywood Game Night” for which she received two Emmy Awards. Art on Main Street

Holds first show of the season in Old Town La Quinta

ld Town La Quinta invites you to attend the Saturday art shows under the new name “Art on Main Street”. Throughout the 2016-17 season over 100 artists will exhibit and sell their fine art in the categories of painting, photography, jewelry, mixed media, sculpture, glass, wood, textiles and more.

The shows wind along Old Town’s Main Street on 8 Saturdays throughout the season with approximately 70 artists at each event. In addition, 12 new artists are showing this year. That means each time you attend Art on Main Street, you’ll discover something new!

Everyone is invited to Art on Main Street on the following Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Oct. 29, Nov. 12 and Nov. 26. 2017: Jan. 21, Feb. 4 and 18, Mar. 18 and Apr. 8.

Each show attracts over 2,000 art enthusiasts, residents and visitors alike. Meet the artists, enjoy live music and spend the day outdoors surrounded by the exquisite Santa Rosa mountains. The ambience of Old Town’s charming cafes, wine bars, beer garden, and boutiques add a unique shopping and dining experience!

Not-So-Spooky Zoo Adventure at The Living Desert

T

he Living Desert’s family-friendly Halloween event returns with the wildly popular Howl-O-Ween, a not-sospooky zoo adventure. The 22nd annual Howl-O-Ween is set for Sunday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 31, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Visitors are encouraged to dress up in their favorite costumes and enjoy the exciting activities planned. Attendees under 12 will receive a candy bag to hit the trick-or-treat trail with a large variety of treat stations.

Additional activities include pumpkin bowling, pumpkin decorating, face painting, a monster maze, live entertainment and more. Zookeepers will provide special animal encounters and The Living Desert’s zoo mascots will also be making appearances throughout.

n Wednesday, Nov. 2 Author Lecture: Dave Zobel will discussing his book “The Science of TV’s the Big Bang Theory: Explanations Even Penny Would Understand.”Dave, a science writer, breaks down the show’s science conversations in a humorous and informative way and lets all everyone in on the punch line. The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Learning Center (TLC) at the Palm Springs Public Library.

The highest-rated scripted show on TV, The Big Bang Theory often features Sheldon, Howard, Leonard, and Raj wisecracking about scientific principles as if Penny and the rest of us should know exactly

what they’re talking about. In Zobel’s book The Science of TV’s The Big Bang Theory he lets all of us in on the punch line by breaking down the show’s scientific conversations. From an explanation of why Sheldon would think 73 is the best number, to an experiment involving the physical stature of Wolowitz women, to an argument refuting Sheldon’s assertion that engineers are the Oompa-Loompas of science, author Dave Zobel maintains a humorous and informative approach and gives readers enough knowledge to make them welcome on Sheldon’s couch.

In addition to his seven-year stint as a writer for public radio’s The Loh Down on Science, Dave Zobel has penned segments

for the University of Texas at Austin’s StarDate, NPR’s Day to Day, and the game show Says You! A science pundit who’s appeared on G4 and Discovery, Zobel sits on the board of Trash for Teaching, an L.A. not-for-profit that rescues manufacturers’ discards and repurposes them as science and art kits for schools. ‘Can’t Help Singing’

Jaci Davis concert to feature standards composed by Jerome Kern

L

ocal singer Jaci Davis returns to Palm Desert’s Joslyn Center Sunday afternoon, Oct. 30, with her cabaret concert, “Can’t Help Singing,” featuring standards composed by Jerome Kern.

This show concludes Les Michaels’ seventh season of Sundays in Summer Cabaret Series, helping to fill the dearth of live entertainment during the shoulder seasons and summer months.

Davis is joined by pianist Derrik Lewis, bassist Bill Saitta and acoustic guitarist Doug MacDonald.

Besides being known as a well-known vocalist, Davis also is a musical director, piano and voice teacher, who holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music.

This her third stand in the series, and her last concert “Live! Laugh! Love!” received a standing ovation.

Her tribute to Kern recognizes his legendary contributions to The Great American Songbook, Broadway and Hollywood musicals with such hits as “All the Things You Are,” “A Fine Romance,” “I’m Old-Fashioned,” “The Last Time I Saw Paris,” “Smoke Get in Your Eyes” and “The Way You Look Tonight.”

A

ll successful restaurants share commonalities of ambience, thoughtful, personalized menus, the freshest of fixings and spot-on service where longtime crew members remember customer preferences.

Of course, it helps to have a man or woman with a bit of brio to carry it off. Danny Riccio, owner, manager and Executive Chef of Riccio’s Steak, Seafood and Pasta possesses brio in spades and embodies a knowledge of and passion for food and how to present it. He earned these chops the old-fashioned way … through decades of hospitality experience as a member of the legendary Riccios, a family who pioneered destination dining in Palm Springs.

Danny’s father, Richard, and his Uncle Tony have long been total stars of the Valley’s entertainment history. Entrepreneurs with a Midas touch, they taught young Danny how to secure superb ingredients, the technology of inspired food prep and the secrets of top-flight customer service … a muscular education that resulted in a life-long calling. “At one time or another, I have filled every position from the back of the house to the front,” Danny explained. “That’s how you learn.”

The honing of his culinary skills began with Uncle Tony at Martoni’s at Club Trinidad, a fabled In Crowd spot of its day. Subsequently, a streak of traditionalism pushed Chef Danny to Italy, where he trained rigorously under Chef Giuseppe at a hotel resort located in the village of Pusano that overlooked the Mediterranean.

“I learned how to make every dish you can imagine from appetizers to entrees to desserts,” Danny said. He told me a couple of great stories about his experiences in the Old Country, discussed his elegant sauce theories and explained the

culture-driven distinctions between cioppino and bouillabaisse. Even the chat is mouth-watering.

Family owned and operated since 1979, Riccio’s Steak Seafood and Past sits on a corner in the heart of Palm Springs’ Designer District. A pretty patio, perfect for star-gazing and watching passers-by, invites you to explore further. Inside, oversized Terrazzo floor tiles meld nicely with off-white walls. The bistro-style bar sits tucked in a corner beneath large windows and the dining tables sport crisp, white cloths. The total effect: chic trattoria.

Chef Danny’s food communicates with Mediterranean, Sicilian and Northern Italian flourishes via thoughtful combinations of herbs and spices. And his infectious enthusiasm for his job is evident as he discusses the menu’s fan favorites.

The Risotto Porcini (a dish I can heartily recommend) is lovely and subtle: abrario rice, diced onions, white wine, garlic and a dash of saffron topped by sautéed Porcini mushrooms. The Chicken Riccio certainly lives up to the Chef’s high

standards consisting of plump chicken breasts stuffed with chicken, fontina cheese, eggplant and asparagus, baked together and then finished with Porcini mushroom sauce. Of course, Riccio’s also offers a wide selection of fish, veal, beef and pork accompanied by roasted rosemary potatoes and seasonal veggies. This year, Chef Danny will be offering a Fresh Fish of the Day every day. Keep an eye out for halibut and Chilean sea bass right off the boat. Riccio’s lunch menu is eclectic by design. CHER The Harken Barrel Fermented Chardonnay proved to be the blast from the past as promised. Initially the wine provided fruity pear and toasted oak that would pair well with lemon pasta, fruits, and fish. This wine became more buttery as it opened up and spices of clove and cinnamon become more prominent. This wine had a luxurious feel that made me want to curl up with a bottle next to a roaring fire. Plus for a price tag of $15 I feel like I took a time machine back to enjoy this “old school” Chardonnay.

DeANN I thoroughly enjoyed the 2015 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay by O’Neill Vintners, the powerful oak fragrance and smooth “pear” taste. Personally I enjoyed the wine even more as it had time to breathe. For me the wine became even more buttery and the oak intensity mellowed. I would recommend this with Thanksgiving dinner or with dessert. A real bargain at only $15.

JULES Thank you Harken Wines for bringing back a buttery Chardonnay! Over the last ten to fifteen years the creamy, 100% oak barrel aged, buttery Chardonnays that I had grown up on virtually disappeared to be replaced with more fruity, crisp Chardonnays aged in steel. I feel this blurred the lines between Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay and I was missing a more full-bodied white that I have been craving! This 2015 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay delivers in all aspects; 100% aged in oak (80% American, 20% French) this creamy wine has a strong fruity nose, pears are prevalent. The initial taste is buttery but with a hint of spice, especially cloves and a nuttiness from the oak. I can’t wait to pair this wine with some pumpkin ravioli, homemade turkey pot pie; ahhh the flavors of Fall!

SUZE At first sniff of the 2015 Harken Chardonnay I noticed a light butteriness. It has a nice creaminess to it and for me a hint of pineapple or something tropical. I usually have not enjoyed Chardonnays in the last few years due to their tartness on the back of my tongue but I thoroughly enjoyed this wine because of its creamy butteriness. Thank you Harken for bringing this back. We enjoyed tasting this wine with some pumpkin cookies Jules brought and I have to say I enjoyed the wine even more. This Chardonnay would make a wonderful complement to your Thanksgiving turkey dinner.

‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’ Dark portal to spirit world opens

hen I was a kid, my older teenage cousin had a Ouija board.

She mostly used it, at least it seemed to me—moving the plastic, teardrop-shaped “planchette,” the thing with three little legs and a see-through hole—over the letters to answer questions about her boyfriend, Slick.

There was nothing very otherworldly about it, and nothing very ominous; when Ouija didn’t give her the answers, she turned to another oracle, the Magic 8 Ball. I think there may have been some Tarot cards and incense in there somewhere, too. Anyway, she and Slick didn’t last very long.

In this movie, set in 1967, we first see the Ouija board game nested, innocently enough, within a stack of other popular games of the era, including Candyland, Sorry! and Monopoly. But in a movie sub-

titled “Origin of Evil,” how long do you think it takes before that ol’ black magic begins to stir?

Ouija: Origin of Evil is actually a prequel to Ouija, the 2014 movie about a group of teens who noodle around with a Ouija board and unlock the portal to a dark, dangerous spirit world. In the new Ouija, a widowed mom working as a fake spiritualist (Elizabeth Reaser) adds a new stunt—the Ouija board—to pep up her fake séance business. In doing so, she makes the same mistake, rolling out the welcome mat for a host of malevolent spirits to take over her home.

And they’re particularly interested in her youngest daughter, Doris (Lulu Wilson), who begins speaking in strange voices, seeing things invisible to everyone else and writing in a foreign language.

And all that’s before things start getting really weird, creepy and calamitous.

Mom thinks Doris is good for business, but her oldest daughter (Annalise Basso) is freaked. The headmaster priest at the girls’ Catholic school (Henry Thomas, all grown up from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial) is concerned. When he pulls up in front of the house to check things out, the background music mimics the iconic theme from The Exorcist.

Co-writer and director Mike Flanagan does a very nice job with the late ’60s vibe—the movie genuinely feels like something happening in the era of moon missions, late-night TV test patterns, macramé sweaters and big American-

made cars. It also feels like something of the era, from the golden retro glow of its colors to the clever reel-change cues “burnt” into the corners of scenes, an homage to a time when its kind of frightnight scares were something you’d see at drive-ins and double-features—a pre-digital era when projectionists would need visual cues to stay on their toes.

Red-eyed, hissing demons—check.

Adorable tyke who undergoes terrifying body transformations and crawls on the walls and walks on the ceiling—yep. Slingshots and stitching needles, comin’ right at your nightmares—got ’em. If you’re looking for some straight-up, mainline Halloween haunted-house “gotchas,” this date-night ride has a slow start, but builds

to a wild, crazy, screaming finish.

The performers are all good, especially the youngsters. Watch out for Lulu Wilson, who played Mikayla on TV’s The Millers; she reminds me of a young Reese Witherspoon. And Annalise Basso—terrific earlier this year as one of the kids in Captain Fantastic—shoulders more and more of the movie as it goes on, shifting her teen-sister role into a stronger, more significant lead as the plot progresses.

Can playing with a Ouija board open up the door to hell? It certainly does in the movies—and my cousin’s ex-boyfriend Slick might have thought so. And maybe that’s why I’ve always been more of a Monopoly, Operation and Mousetrap guy myself.
