Jekyll and Hyde Haunting audiences at Palm Canyon Theatre

aving trouble deciding what to be for Halloween? So are Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One thing is certain; they are getting people in the haunting spirit at the Palm Canyon Theatre. Jekyll and Hyde, a musical horror drama based on the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, plays at PCT Oct. 21-30. The musical features a pop-rock score by Frank Wildhorn, with book by Leslie Bricusse, and lyrics by Bricusse, Wildhorn and Steve Cuden. Set in 19th Century London, a brilliant physician, Dr. Henry Jekyll is plagued by a need to understand his father’s mental illness. Determined to find the distinction between “good” and “evil,” Dr. Jekyll performs an experiment on himself, but ends up creating an alternate personality of pure evil, dubbed Mr. Hyde, who wreaks murderous revenge on the city of London. As Dr. Jekyll’s fiancée, Emma Carew, grows increasingly fearful for her betrothed, a prostitute, Lucy Harris, finds herself dangerously involved with both the doctor and his alter ego. Struggling to control Hyde before he takes over for good, Dr. Jekyll races to find a cure for the demon he has created. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are played by Jason Marquez, a Los Angeles based actor who was last seen on the PCT stage in its 2010 production of Carousel. He has performed at Carnegie Hall and Disneyland Resorts. Recently, he recorded an album entitled, “Tribute” of Elvis Presley hits. Carew is played by Kaitlyn Farley, who portrayed the newsboy and a town’s girl in PCT’s 2004 production of Jekyll and Hyde. Farley was the 2016 Grand Prize Winner of the McCallum Theater Institute’s Open Call. She has also performed at Lincoln Center in New York City. Lucy Harris is played by Rachel Saiz who played Wednesday Addams in PCT’s production of The Addam’s Family last season. Additional cast members include Anthony Martinez as Gabriel John Utterson; Don Kelly as Sir. Danvers Carew; Ron Coronado as The Bishop of Basingstroke;

Raul Valenzuela as Simon Stride; Shafik Wahhab as Spider; and many other talented local actors. Jekyll and Hyde is directed by J. Stegar Thompson. Musical direction is by Steven Smith, who will lead a live trio during the production. The show is choreographed by Jaqueline LaBlanc with costume designs by Derik Shopinski. Sets and lighting designs are by J.W. Layne, co-artistic director of PCT. Jekyll and Hyde is part of the Palm Canyon Theatre’s 20th Anniversary Season. The musical opens Friday, Oct. 21, and runs two weekends through Sunday, Oct. 30. Regular show times are 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m. Tickets are $32-$36. Student tickets are $15, with valid ID; student tickets must be purchased at the Box Office. he City of La Quinta is excited to announce Brew In LQ on Saturday, Oct. 22 at SilverRock Resort. Fifth Annual Family Fun Day at McCallum Theatre

he McCallum Theatre will kick off its 2016-17 season with the Fifth Annual McCallum Theatre Family Fun Day set for Sunday, Oct. 23, featuring a performance of the critically-acclaimed The Underwater Bubble Show. ‘Annapurna’

Coachella Valley Rep opens with Sharr White’s breathtaking story about the longevity of love By Gary Walker For Desert Entertainer

ow beginning its sixth season, Coachella Valley Rep (CVRep) opens with Sharr White’s “Annapurna,” “a breathtaking story about the longevity of love,” according to Artistic Director Ron Celona, who notes that the play reflects this season’s underlying theme, “Love, Marriage & Life-Changing Events.” Anna Nicholas stars as Emma, who walks out on cowboy-poet husband Ulysses (Eric Charles Jorgenson) twenty years ago. After learning he is in dire straits, she tracks him down to a trailer park in the wilds of Colorado, where he is working on his magnum opus, hooked on an oxygen tank and cooking in the buff. Alternately comic and conflicted and charged by rage and compassion, their reunion brings back the worst and best of their former bond. Nicholas is a writer, director and actor, whose career spans 30 years and is comprised of work for stage, film and television. Her stage work includes plays by A.R. Gurney, Harold Pinter and Alan Ayckbourn. Jorgenson’s stage work includes several Shakespeare and modern plays. He is a noted violinist and has written two short films. ollege of the Desert (COD) Performing Arts will present Little Shop of Horrors – one of Off-Broadway’s longest running shows – in the Pollock Theatre on Oct. 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30. Little Shop, a delectable sci-fi horror musical with an electrifying 1960s pop/ rock score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, is directed by Se Layne with music direction by Scott T. Smith. Seymour Krelborn is a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II” after his coworker crush. As Audrey II grows bigger and meaner, the carnivorous plant promises limitless fame and fortune to Seymour, as long as he continues providing a fresh supply of

odernism Week’s 2016 Fall Preview will take place Oct. 2123, at various locations in the Coachella Valley. Many events still have tickets available, although some are already sold out. ‘The Accountant ’

Adds up to more than a conventional action movie By Neil Pond

o you like puzzles? veteran U.S. Treasury director Ray King (J.K. Simmons) asks newbie analyst Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) as he introduces her to one last big, baffling case he wants to crack before he retires. King wants to reel in the mystery man behind an international string of dirty-money laundering, an American who seemingly moves with ease through the slime of the world’s underbelly of gangsters, cartels and drug kingpins as well as regular billionaire businessmen who need to tidy up their “financials” quietly and quickly—and H&R Block is out of the question. King calls him simply The Accountant. “Who survives this kind of clientele?”

King muses. “Coming in cold, cooking the books and getting out alive?” Puzzles play a significant role in The Accountant, which starts out with a familiar cops-and-crooks, espionage-movie feel but quickly corkscrews into something with more twists, turns—and pieces. Ben Affleck plays Christian Wolff, a mathematical savant whose bland “day job” as a nondescript, pencil-pushing accountant is his cover—his disguise— for wide-ranging contract work, zipping around in his Chevy pickup and his totally tricked-out 34-foot-long Airstream trailer. Because he ventures in and out of some dicey, dangerous situations, Wolff has also developed a highly specialized skill set in other areas, too. When things take a turn for the worse

He’s like a laser-focused cyborg, a walking lethal weapon—a hulking superhero without a costume. In fact, his “origin story,” told in flashbacks, might remind you of how Bruce Wayne became Batman (another role, as you probably know, currently played by Affleck in DC’s big-screen franchise) or how other superheroes got started down their paths. When we first meet young Christian as a boy, he’s working on a jigsaw puzzle. But here’s where The Accountant takes its first turn. Christian has autism, which explains much about how he grew up and became gifted with numbers, but not so tuned in to people. There’s a whole subplot about how his domineering military dad (Robert Treveiler) further shaped and steeled—rather than coddled—him, helping shift his neurological condition from a liability to an asset. A stint at a minimum-security prison introduces Wolff to an organized-crime bookkeeping snitch (Jeffrey Tambor) who takes him under his wing, teaches him basic socialization skills and schools him in the “dark-money” arts. When Wolff is hired to find the source of a $62 million leak at a high-tech robotics firm, it puts him and a perky young employee, Dana (Anna Kendrick), on the hit list of an assassin (Jon Berthal) and his crew hired to stop them and cover their tracks.

The original screenplay, by Bill Dubuque (who also wrote The Judge), craftily keeps you guessing—although some viewers will probably see the movie’s biggest “surprise” twist coming long before it arrives—and plants several puzzle pieces along the way to be picked up and set in place later. In the middle of the action is another story entirely, a tale of family, siblings, daddy issues, kids who are “different,” and the relationship between Wolff and Dana, which doesn’t necessarily go where another, more conventional movie might have taken it. It’s so cannily drawn in its characters, backstory and detail, it sometimes feels like the pilot for a new TV series or the setup for another movie. I guess we’ll have to wait and see: Where The Accountant will turn up is a puzzle with a piece that’s always missing.

Well a new brand of Halloween attraction from Carnival Cabaret producer Dan Gore is mounting at downtown dining and entertainment establishment Oscar’s.
