Modernism Week Fall Preview Featuring tours, educational programs and receptions

M

odernism Week’s 2016 Fall Preview will take place Oct. 21-23, at various locations in the Coachella Valley. Many events still have tickets available, although some are already sold out. Fall Preview events that still have availability include the popular Premier Double Decker Architecture Bus Tours, walking tours of the notable Palm Springs neighborhoods, architectural talks, nightly parties, and a host of other events. The weekend’s events provide attendees with a wide-ranging sample of the more than 250 events and activities being planned for the annual 11-day festival in Feb. 2017.

Highlights of the weekend include the Modernism Show Early Buying Preview Reception on Friday, the Saturday evening cocktail reception honoring famed Palm Springs architect E. Stewart Williams, and the popular Palm Springs Modernism Show and Sale on Saturday and Sunday.

“Many of our best tours and events still have tickets available,” said Lisa Vossler Smith, Executive Director of Modernism Week.

Notes from the Editor Modernism Week’s Fall Preview is back this week which is always an exciting event to attend. There is so much to see and I still get amazed at the Coachella Valley when it comes to architecture. The double decker bus and walking tours are definitely something you should check out this weekend.

If you are like me, now is about the time you start getting into the Halloween spirit. To help get into the swing of Halloween, Palm Canyon Theatre is starting their production of the classic Jekyll and Hyde.

The show runs Oct. 21 to 30.

Don’t forget the Brew in La Quinta event on Oct. 22 at SilverRock Resort. Sounds like its going

to be a great time with lots of beer, food vendors and music. As a nondrinker, I think it’s awesome that they have designated driver tickets available for $10!

Just as a reminder, the Coachella Valley Water District is warning customers to be on the look out for scam artists misrepresenting themselves as district personnel. Also Senator Stone will be hosting a free Senior Scam Seminar on Oct. 21 in Cathedral City. You can read more about them on page 11.

Red Hat fall season started up with first Monday luncheon held at Thai Palms on l0/3. Red Hat meetings held the second and fourth Saturday at Rainbow RV Park from 1 to 3 pm. There will be a Halloween potluck on the 22nd, bring salad or dessert. Membership drive this month, chapter dues will be

collected then. All current Red Hatters, traveling ones and new joiners welcome. Evon R. son Randy just completed a boat voyage from Kodiak, Alaska to Hawaii and then on to San Francisco. I checked on his position thanks to information from Evon and found that his speed was

Had a nice visit with my brother, Ralph and sister in law Sandy on the 29th. They made the circuit of San Fernando Valley to see her mother, Santa Rosa to see her sister, Desert Edge to see me and then Orange Co. to see my kids. What a trip!

Ralph showed up with a blue diagonal streak in his hair - said a young niece at beauty school “fixed” him up! Sandy went in later and got a light lavender rinse on her hair.

‘Jekyll & Hyde’ Haunting Audiences at Palm Canyon Theatre Having trouble deciding what to be for Halloween? So are Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One thing is certain; they are getting people in the haunting spirit at the Palm Canyon Theatre.

Jekyll and Hyde, a musical horror drama based on the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, plays at PCT October 21-30. The musical features a pop-rock score

by Frank Wildhorn, with book by Leslie Bricusse, and lyrics by Bricusse, Wildhorn and Steve Cuden.

Set in 19th Century London, a brilliant physician, Dr. Henry Jekyll is plagued by a need to understand his father’s mental illness.

Determined to find the distinction between “good” and “evil,” Dr. Jekyll performs an experiment on himself, but ends up creating an alternate personality of pure evil, dubbed Mr. Hyde, who wreaks murderous revenge on the city of London. As Dr. Jekyll’s fiancée, Emma Carew, grows increasingly fearful for her betrothed, a prostitute, Lucy

Carew is played by Kaitlyn Farley, who portrayed the newsboy and a town’s girl in PCT’s 2004 production of Jekyll and Hyde. Farley was the 2016 Grand Prize Winner of the McCallum Theater Institute’s Open Call. She has also performed at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Lucy Harris is played by Rachel Saiz who played Wednesday Addams in PCT’s production of The Addam’s Family last season.

Additional cast members include Anthony Martinez as Gabriel John Utterson; Don Kelly as Sir. Danvers Carew; Ron Coronado as The Bishop of Basingstroke; Raul Valenzuela as Simon Stride; Shafik Wahhab as Spider; and many other talented local actors.

It doesn’t have the most impressive of names, but hash is a dish both simple and satisfying, whether you serve it hot for breakfast, cold for lunch or warmed up for dinner.

Since you can use any dribs and drabs of leftovers to make it, you can’t beat it as a penny-pinching one-pot meal. The name comes from the French verb hacher (to chop), and that’s the main thing to remember when making hash: the ingredients should be chopped into bite-size pieces (about 1/2 inch) so that they get tender at about the same time and are easy to eat without a knife.

Sweet Potato and Chicken Hash

Swapping sweet potatoes for the usual white ones ups the nutrition content in this dish—not to mention making it more colorful.

• 3 1/2 cups peeled, diced sweet potatoes (1/2-inch cubes, about 3 medium potatoes) • 1/2 cup water, divided • 4 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 cup diced onion • 1 cup diced celery • 1 cup diced red bell pepper • 1 1/2 pounds cooked chicken breasts, cubed (1/2 -inch cubes, about 4 cups) • 1 bunch green onions, sliced (about 1 cup) • 1 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley • 1/2 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper 1. Place potatoes in a covered microwave-safe bowl with 1/4 cup water and microwave on HIGH until tender, about 4 minutes.

2. Heat oil in a deep 12-inch skillet over medium. Add onion, celery and bell pepper. Cook, stirring, until tender, about 5 minutes.

3. Add sweet potatoes, chicken, green onions and remaining 1/4 cup water to pan. Heat through. Remove pan from heat. Fold in parsley and add salt and pepper. With a large fork, lightly smash the sweet potatoes.

Makes 7 cups; serves 6.

Coachella Valley Water District Warns Customers of Possible Scam Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) is reminding customers to be wary of possible scams involving people misrepresenting themselves as district personnel.

In the past week, CVWD has received several reports of customers being approached by a company offering to test their tap water. Company representatives have implied they are affiliated with CVWD.

CVWD does not contract with an outside company to test tap water. In addition, all CVWD personnel carry identification. If a customer has concerns about whether a person is affiliated with CVWD or whether work is authorized by CVWD, they can call CVWD at (760) 391-9600.

Third Annual Taste of East Valley The City of Indio, in partnership with the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Indio Visitors Bureau, will present the Third Annual Taste of East Valley on Thursday, Oct. 27 at Shields Date Garden. The event, taking place from 4 to 7 p.m. on the sprawling grounds of the 17-acre working date farm, will showcase many of the best restaurants and eateries in the eastern Coachella Valley, including: The Café at Shields Date Gar-

den, The Bistro at Fantasy Springs, Dunkin’ Donuts, El Ranchito Restaurant, Ciros Italian Restaurant, RosAmarillo’s Restaurant, Y Porque No! Oyters Bar and Grill.

“In just a few years, this has become an ideal fall experience in a really unique outdoor setting,” said Josh Bonner, Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce President/CEO. “Whether you’re a dedicated foodie or just looking to explore the culinary highlights of the region, you’ll find it at Taste of

the East Valley.”

The 2015 edition of Taste of the East Valley featured 18 local restaurants serving signature dishes for a sold-out crowd of 400 attendees. The cost of this year’s event is $20 per person and includes sample plates from every participating restaurant.

“Taste of the East Valley is great way to become better acquainted with the many diverse dining options we’re lucky to have right here in Indio,” said Mayor Glenn Miller.

“For both locals and visitors, it’s be-

come one of the signature kick-off events of the season.”

The event will also include live musical performances, art installations and cooking demonstrations.

Prospective attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets online, as last year’s event sold out quickly.
