Palm Springs Casual Concours Classic Car Show to Benefit Angel View

A

ngel View, a non-profit serving children and adults with disabilities, will be the beneficiary of Great Autos of Yesteryear’s 8th Annual Palm Springs Casual Concours classic car show to be held Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Desert Princess Country Club.

More than 100 classic and exotic cars will be on display on the resort’s beautiful grounds. Attendees also will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win a 1987 Buick Somerset Regal. Raffle tickets

will be available for purchase prior to and during the show. The cost is $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. The winning ticket will be drawn at 2 p.m. the day of the show. The winner need not be present to win.

“We greatly appreciate Great Autos of Yesteryear’s support of Angel View,” said Patti Park, executive director of Angel View. “And it’s such a win for people who attend.

They not only get to enjoy the car show, they help raise much needed funds to support our programs.”

“Our members will be bring-

ing pristine cars from throughout Southern California,” noted Jay D’Angelo, president of Great Autos of Yesteryear. “They love coming to Palm Springs and they particularly love being able to assist such a great cause.”

Founded in 1954, Angel View offers three primary services: 24hour residential care for children and adults with disabilities, a therapeutic Day Program for adults with developmental disabilities; and Angel View Outreach, which provides free services and support

for local children with disabilities.

Admission to the car show is $10 per person. Tickets to the event are available at www.angelview.org and at the gate. Raffle tickets will be available at the Palm Springs Street Fair on Thursdays September 29, October 6 and October 13.

Notes from the Editor It’s a sad week here at the Desert Mobile Home News office. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the City of Palm Springs, the Palm Springs Police Department and the families of officers Jose “Gil” Vega and Lesley Zerebny, who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty on Saturday, Oct. 8. Thank you to all of our law enforcement personnel for keeping our communities safe everyday.

We also lost Mona Brehm, matriarch of Brehm Communications, Inc. parent company of the Desert Mobile Home News. She passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 4 one year to the date that her husband Bill Brehm Sr. passed. Our thoughts

and prayers go out to the entire Brehm family.

On a lighter note the free Palm Desert fall concerts continue, a really great way to spend a Thursday evening with friends, music and food. Speaking of food the Cathdral City Historical Society will be holding the first annual chicken and dumplings fundraiser on Oct. 16, yumm!

Troy Skinner to Perform ‘What the World Needs Now’ at Arthur Newman Theater Local singer, Troy Skinner performs his acclaimed one-man cabaret concert, “What The World Needs Now” on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Arthur Newman Theatre in Palm Desert. The show is a tribute to legendary composer Burt Bacharach, with piano accompaniment by musical director Christopher Marlowe. Troy Skinner has lived in Palm Springs for 17 years and many locals know him as a former weather person for KMIR-TV 6, and his many

performances in musicals and cabaret shows in Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and as a popular Spin Class Instructor at fitness facilities around the Desert.

Hailing from Colorado, he began vocal training at the age of 15 and attended University of Northern Colorado to major in Classical Music only to discover his love of The Great American Song-

book, where many Burt Bacharach songs have become Standards. A few include; Alfie, Anyone Who Had A Heart, A House In Not A Home, This Guys In Love With You, Close To You, and Do You Know The Way To San Jose. Some are featured in Hollywood Films and received awards including the Oscar for Rain Drops Keep Falling On My Head. Artists that recorded hits

with Burt’s songs including The Carpenters, and Dionne Warwick, whose name is almost synonymous with Bacharach’s. Troy’s Musical Director and accompanist for this show will be Christopher Marlowe, who has a lengthy history working with many top singers as well, and known for his creative musical arrangements.

Mona Brehm: Newspapers Co-Owner, Mourned After Death at 92 Mona Brehm, matriarch of Brehm Communications Inc., parent company of the Desert Entertainer and Desert Mobile Home News, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, leaving a family of relatives and employees remembering her for her heart, her conscience and her courage.

“Mom was a wonderful person, universally loved and full of care for others,” Bill Brehm Jr, her son and president of BCI, said.

“She had an infectious smile that made people feel comfortable and welcome. She was always thoughtful of others and worried about doing the right thing every day and with all whom she dealt,” Brehm said. “She was stern when necessary with her kids and provided a guiding moral hand for her family and the company.”

The daughter of McGiffin Newspapers founder W.J. McGiffin, Mona grew up in the news business.

She was born in Iowa City, Iowa, and lived in Fort Madison, Iowa, and Kansas City, Missouri, before moving with her family to Beverly Hills when she was 11 years old.

As a young woman, Mona was an avid horsewoman, showing her beloved horse Silky in many competitions and earning countless ribbons and awards.

She attended Pomona College and, following graduation in 1946, went to work for her father at the Industrial Post in Bell. Working as a bookkeeper for $18.75 a week, she met Bill Brehm, a Navy Air Corps veteran who was laboring as a printer’s devil in the pressroom. Mona and Bill Brehm were married in 1947, and Mona began her life as a homemaker, mother and volunteer.

The family lived in South Gate briefly before moving to Downey, where they made their home for more than 35 years. Mona had a son and three daughters and threw herself into raising them.

She served as publicity chairwoman, secretary, program chairwoman and president of the Gallatin School Parents Club and was in charge of the school library for several years.

When her daughters became involved in the Camp Fire Girls’ Bluebird program, Mona served as a troop leader, and when her husband coached their son’s Little

League teams, Mona was the scorekeeper and ways and means chair.

Mona’s family recalls her many talents at home, including her skill helping with math homework and her strength. Young Bill brought home a chin-up bar and Mona could not only do more chin-ups than anyone, she could do them with one hand.

“Most kids bragged about their dad’s muscles.

I remember bragging about mom’s!” quipped daughter Barbara Schuyler.

By 1971, amidst changes in the family company and the world of newspapers, Mona returned to the business, by then owned by her and her husband. She was the company’s first trainee in the new Compugraphic typesetting machines that were sparking a revolution in the way newspapers were created.

Bill Brehm Sr. would later say that he asked Mona to take on the job because she was the only person he trusted absolutely.

The employees always came first to Mona and as a result she created the profit-sharing program in 1973.

For more than 40 years, she was the plan administrator, dedicated to making sure the company’s workers could build up savings and security for their future.

Under Mona and Bill’s co-ownership, the company grew, adding newspapers, printing facilities and also a real estate division. Mona helped lead the way, serving as corporate secretary of Brehm Communications’ corporations.

“Over the years, Mona inspired so many, and was a driving force behind BCI’s success,” COO Tom Kirk said in announcing her death.

Through it all, she was known as the heart of the business, a hostess who put visitors at ease and charmed wherever she went.

“She was the glue that gently held what is referred to as our Brehm newspaper family together and she did this with a smile, a hug and a meaningful comment,” Kevin and Sandra Ashby, a BCI publisher and

his wife, wrote.

Mona also made an impact on communities through foundational work on places for children to play and women to heal and grow. She and her husband were major donors in numerous philanthropic endeavors, including partnering with the Basin Wide Foundation on building a family park with soccer and baseball fields, a ballpark for specialneeds children and adults and a playground, dubbed Mona’s Playground, at the Brehm Park Family Recreation Center in Yucca Valley.

She was also a major donor in Shakti Rising, a foundation her granddaughter Shannon founded to empower women and help them to heal from life’s challenges.

“Her life was a perfect example of how to treat others with compassion and grace and how to strive to do what is right,” daughter Cindy Melland, publisher and president of Hi-Desert Publishing Co., said.

“So many lives have been touched and improved by her heartfelt contributions both financial and intellectual,” Melland said. “She never demanded center stage, but we all knew who held everything together — always. Mom adored her grandchildren and always put her family first. Her cheery hello and warm smile greeted all; she will be missed by many.”

Mona was also an excellent singer and gifted pianist, daughter Schuyler added.

“She played many classical and popular songs (“Moonlight Sonata,” “Phantom of the Opera”), but seldom read music, choosing to play by ear. Growing up, we’d ask her to play almost anything. As long as she had heard the song, she could play it.”

As a young girl, she was scheduled to play at a piano recital. All the students were required to play the same song, but none had seen the sheet music. “Mom was not confident with her sight-reading skills and was very nervous,” Schuyler said. “Luckily, several students played the song before her so when it was her turn, she played the entire piece beautifully by ear.”

“Mom’s musical prowess was second to none,” daughter Tina McDonald agreed.

Mona loved the beach and often hosted her granddaughters and their moms on trips to the coast.

She loved to read, golf, and play card games with family.

Bill Brehm Sr., her husband of over 67 years, died Oct. 4, 2015. In the year after his death, Mona remained devoted to her family and service projects and deeply interested in the company she helped to build.

“She amazed us with her sharp mind and moxie up until the end,” neighbor Donna Smith wrote.

Mona Brehm is survived by her son, BCI President Bill Brehm Jr., of Poway; daughters Tina McDonald, of Poway, Barbara Schuyler, of Fallbrook, and Cindy Melland, of Yucca Valley; grandchildren Shannon and Paul Thompson, Bill Brehm III and Carissa Fleshman, Ryan Schuyler and Lindsay Wagner, Monica and Dylan Budd and Eddie Costello; and 12 great-grandchildren.

For one thing, her research into migrant workers is about to bring her up against some very violent people who emphatically do not want to be researched. For another…she thinks Virgil’s kind of cute.

Who can resist a crispy-on-theoutside, tender-on-the-inside cutlet? No, it doesn’t take an Austrian in the family to revel in the joys of schnitzel. It doesn’t even take veal (what we know as Weiner Schnitzel). The meat of your liking and something to whack it with, to create a thin, tenderized piece of meat, will do. You’ll need crumbs for dredging and oil for frying, but little more. Lemon for squeezing is strongly recommended. Haute cuisine it’s not. It’s better. Simple food, yet worthy of a Hapsburg.

Chicken Schnitzel Milanese

Schnitzel with an Italian passport—Parmesan in the crumbs and a lemony arugula salad to top.

• 4 (6-ounce) boneless, skinless chicken breast halves • 1/2 cup flour • 1 cup plain panko breadcrumbs • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 2 eggs • 1 tablespoon milk • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt, divided • 6 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 4 teaspoons fresh lemon juice • Freshly ground black pepper

• 3 cups arugula • 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced 1. Preheat oven to 200F. 2. Cut each chicken breast in half lengthwise, cutting to, but not through, other side. Open up like a book. Place between pieces of plastic wrap and pound to about ¼-inch thickness.

3. Place flour in a dish. Combine panko and Parmesan and place in a second dish. Beat eggs with milk and place in a third dish. Sprinkle garlic powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt on chicken. Dredge chicken in flour, shaking off excess, dip in egg wash, then dredge in panko mixture; pat lightly. Transfer to a wire rack 15 minutes to set.

4. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a 12inch skillet over medium-high. Add 2 cutlets and cook until golden and crisp, about 2 minutes. Turn and cook 2 minutes more. Transfer to an ovenproof plate and keep warm in oven. Add 2 more tablespoons oil (or more as needed), and cook remaining 2 cutlets.

5. Whisk remaining 1 tablespoon oil with lemon juice in a medium bowl. Add remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper. Add arugula and onion and toss. Arrange chicken on serving plates and top with salad.

Author Lee Lynch to Speak at the Palm Springs Public Library On Saturday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m. the Palm Springs Public Library will host author Lee Lynch. She will be speaking as the keynote speaker for the Fourth Annual Left Coast Lesbian Writers’ and Readers’ Conference (LCLC), however this event is open to the public and anyone is invited to hear Ms. Lynch share about her books and work. The lecture will be presented in The Learning Center at the Library.

Lee Lynch is the namesake and grateful first recipient of The Golden Crown Literary Society Lee Lynch Classic Award for her novel The Swashbuckler. An American Queer is her most recent work from Bold

Strokes Books, which also published her novels The Raid, Beggar of Love and Sweet Creek.

Her back list is available from Bold Strokes, including The Morton River Trilogy and her short story collections.

Lynch’s long-running column, “The Amazon Trail,” appears nationally. Her short stories can be found in many anthologies. Among other honors, she has received the James Duggins MidCareer Award in Writing, has been inducted into the Saints and Sinners Literary Hall of Fame, is a three-time

Lammy finalist, earned an Alice B. Reader Award and is the winner of two additional Goldies. She is a GCLS Trailblazer.

According to a published research report, scientists at the University

of Washington, University of Missouri, and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, used an FDA approved organ transplant drug, Rapamycin, to extend the life of mice by as much as 60%.

Big Bear Lake Village Scarecrow Festival Dozens of scarecrows will make a grand entrance in Big Bear Lake Village for the autumn season this.

“Our scarecrows bring so much spirit to our shopping district during the fall season,” said President of The Village Business Association of Big Bear Lake Matt Scriven. “It’s inevitable they add flavor to the character of the Village.”

Scarecrows are on display throughout Big Bear Lake Village during the 3rd Annual Big Bear Lake Village Scarecrow Festival for six straight weeks this fall, ending Sunday, Nov. 6. Participating Big Bear Lake Village merchants display homemade scarecrow creations outside of their shops, boutiques and restaurants to give Big Bear’s marketplace a joyful autumn twist. The 3rd Annual Big Bear Lake Village Scarecrow Festival is held now through Nov. 6. Winners of each scarecrow category are determined by votes from the general public.

La Gran Fiesta at The Living Desert The Living Desert will host La Gran Fiesta, or The Big Party, as the finale to its Hispanic Heritage Month promotion on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Festivities are free for members or with paid park admission.

Party-goers at La Gran Fiesta will enjoy musical entertainment from mariachi groups to youth folklorico dancers, arts and crafts, face-painting, as well as authentic Mexican cuisine. The day’s activities include a scavenger hunt near the Mexican wolf, jaguar, caracara, and other animals important in Hispanic culture, along with and a variety of games and giveaways. As a special gift, the first 1,000 guests will re-

ceive a pepper plant cultivated and grown at The Living Desert (one per person while supplies last).

During La Gran Fiesta, The Living Desert will also be raising awareness of the plight of the vaquita, the world’s most endangered marine

mammal. Current estimates state there are fewer than 60 of these small porpoise left in the northern Gulf of California. The vaquitas’ major threat is entanglement in fishing gillnets. As a way to help save the vaquita, attendees at La Gran Fiesta are invited to take part in the inaugural vaquita parade. Guests are also encouraged to ‘adopt’ a vaquita to help support their recovery in the wild – adopters receive an adoption certificate, book, hat, and fact sheet – and all proceeds go to support the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) vaquita conservation action plan.
