Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at The Living Desert
T
he Living Desert is proud to honor Hispanic Heritage Month from September through October 15. The celebration of culture at the zoo includes one free child admission for every paid adult on each Saturday and Sunday throughout and culminates in the annual La Gran Fiesta on Saturday, October 15. “The Living Desert is proud to honor Hispanic Heritage Month,” said Allen Monroe, President/CEO of The Living Desert. “We invite everyone to learn more about our
conservation efforts, take advantage of the weekend discount, and enjoy La Gran Fiesta.” Visitors are also invited to attend La Gran Fiesta on October 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The big party is free with paid admission. Party-goers will enjoy musical entertainment from Mariachi groups to youth Folklorico dancers, arts and crafts, face-painting, as well as authentic Mexican cuisine including tacos and churros. Scavenger hunts near the Mexican wolf, el lobo Mexicano, the jaguar, the caracara, some-
times called the Mexican Eagle and other animals important in Hispanic culture, along with and a variety of games and giveaways also be highlights of the day’s celebrations. As a special gift, the first 1,000 guests will receive a pepper plant cultivated and grown at The Living Desert. Neighborhood Park News This Week Joshua Springs MHP By Joan Carroll Wow, what a weather change on the l3th. The news had said wind, lowering of temperature during day and evening. I went out about one in the morning and smelled rain in the air. Then next week it was back to the l00’s again! Heard from Camille. She and Lon had lovely time in Alaska very good weather; and then headed down to spend time with daughter Julie in Seattle. Saw two grandsons Jordan and Taylor. Taylor, who is l6, spent some time with a cousin fishing but season was cut short so he had time to visit. They’re bringing back pictures of Alaskan wildlife. There will be an all park inspection by the County on Oct. 4. They will check all lots for potential fire hazards, potential electrical problems, etc. Those who receive a citation will have a set number of days

Peggy said the four sons are doing home service jobs with each having a different specialty. Phyllis and Bob S. (long time residents) will be putting their home up for sale soon. They have already sold their car and motor home. They are planning to go to a senior apartment or cottage development in Riverside that has pools, recreation activities, a bus to shopping and etc., a resident library and a computer room. She said that water, garbage collection and cable are included in their rent. They will be closer to their daughter. Please let us know what’s going on in your park. Cinema Diverse 2016 The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival, Sept. 22-25, has a number of films with local connections, beginning with this year’s opening night film, “Lazy Eye.” “Much of “Lazy Eye” was filmed at a house in the desert near Joshua Tree,” said Michael C. Green, Festival Director. Another film, “Diane from the Moon,” which is one of this year’s short film selections, was shot entirely in Palm Springs. Local viewers will recognize several locations
along Palm Canyon Drive, and scenes which were filmed on several of the hiking trails around Palm Springs. Other films, while not being filmed locally, nevertheless have local connections - either through local full or part-time filmmakers themselves or through their family members. This recipe serves a crowd, but don’t worry if you don’t have one: The way the apple and cinnamon flavors infuse the cake makes it even better the second day. The cake also freezes well.
Philadelphia-Style Apple Cake Be sure to grease the Bundt pan really well with vegetable shortening. Cooking spray may not be enough to keep the cake from sticking • 6 cups peeled and thinly sliced Granny Smith apples (about 3 large) • 1 1/2 cups, plus 5 tablespoons, granulated sugar, divided • 4 tsp ground cinnamon • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 Tbsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp salt • 4 eggs • 1/2 cup light brown sugar • 1 cup vegetable oil • 1/2 cup orange juice • 2 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1. Preheat oven to 350F. Grease, sugar and flour a 10-inch Bundt or tube pan. 2. Combine apple slices with 5 tablespoons granulated sugar and cinnamon; set aside. 3. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl and set aside. 4. Beat eggs with remaining gran-

ulated sugar and brown sugar. Add vegetable oil, orange juice and vanilla; beat well. Gradually blend in flour mixture and mix until well blended (about 1 minute). 5. Pour one third of the batter into the pan. Top with half the apple slices, draining off any liquid. Pour in half the remaining batter and top with remaining apple slices. Top with remaining batter, making sure the apples are covered. 6. Bake 55 to 60 minutes, until the top turns golden brown and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Let cool 10 minutes in pan. Turn out onto a wire rack and let cool completely. Serves 16.
