He Said, She Said Fathers and Daughters Working Together in the Wine Business From Tuscany and Bordeaux to California and Washington, women are taking over the reins at wineries – and quite often they’re the daughters of the winery owners or founders. As they grow up, they are inspired by the passion of their family and join them in the vineyards, in the cellar, in the business office, tasting room or representing the brand on the road. These daughters are the next generation who will be leading the wine business into a new age. Very Napa Valley will share insights from four inspirational Napa Valley father-daughter teams and their stories: Grgich Hills Estate, Peju Napa Valley, On Q Wines and Robinson Family Vineyards.

GRGICH HILLS ESTATE Legacy of Generations Mike and Violet Miljenko “Mike” Grgich first gained international recognition at the celebrated “Paris Tasting” of 1976. In a now historic blind tasting, a panel of eminent French judges swirled, sniffed and sipped an array of the fabled white Burgundies of France and a small sampling of upstart Chardonnays from the Napa Valley. When their scores were tallied, the French judges were shocked: they had chosen the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay crafted by Mike Grgich as the finest white wine in the world! The results stunned the international wine establishment and immediately earned Mike a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world. While many other Napa wineries pursue strategies of expansion, Mike now 93 years young, along with his daughter, Violet prefer to stay small. Mike commented “Violet has worked full time at the winery since 1988. I have taught her everything I know and passed along my knowledge from living 93 years. The greatest advantage of working with my daughter is I know she won’t take all of that knowledge and experience and leave for another winery.” “Think of generations – not just years. As a Croatian, family’s very important. People ask me why I’m still working and I tell them it’s not just for me, but for my daughter and her son and future generations.” Violet has been inspired by her father. “My dad has a passion for life, connects deeply with everyone he meets and has an incredible work ethic. He is always proud to say that I inherited his genes, and so am I.” Violet advises her peers to “Enjoy the proximity, take pride in your family, have patience, and learn as much as you can.” One family mantra was passed down from his father: “Every day – do your best, learn something new, and make a friend.” VERY NAPA VALLEY

PEJU NAPA VALLEY Setting Up Roots in Rutherford Tony, Ariana and Lisa Tucked down an unusual tree-lined lane off Highway 29, the elegant and warm Peju Winery is an inviting and artistic setting. A family operation, the two daughters are now grown and very much involved. The love of farming and a passion for wine brought Tony and wife Herta from Los Angeles to Napa in 1982 where they purchased 30 acres of land in Rutherford to find a better way of life for their family. The property included a home from the early 1900s and a sixty-year-old vineyard. Growing up, Ariana and her sister Lisa were involved in every aspect. The two girls harvested grapes and hauled them in the vineyard tractor. Initially, they suckered vines for a dollar a row. Even early on, Ariana was showing signs of her business acumen when she renegotiated the rate to five dollars. “Our parents worked so hard to create an idyllic and safe place for us to grow up. They never, ever let us know how difficult and challenging it was to run a vineyard and winery,” she confides. There was not much action in the Valley back then and not nearly so many wineries, businesses and visitors in Rutherford. That often left the girls having to find ways to entertain themselves and augment their allowances. Older sister, Lisa confessed that “we setup a small stand and would sell fruits and vegetables in front of the tasting room – or we’d bring our horse to the winery and let people pet him for 25 cents.” The two sisters still work very well together. Dad, Tony Peju has a quiet and friendly executive manner. “I never just assumed they would become part of the family business. As they got older, we encouraged them to leave Napa to pursue their dreams. If the kids wanted to come back and join the business – it would happen organically.” It’s not easy to run any business, especially a family business in the wine industry. At some point, founders have to bring the next generation in. “Open communication is the best way to create respect and trust. As a father and founder of the winery, I always made all the decisions for the business.” Over the years, the girls have taken a larger role in the company operations. Ariana works behind the scenes, overseeing all aspects of the daily business operations. Starting in 2006, she implemented Peju’s environmental plan, converted to solar and is a certified organic winery, a Bay Area Green Business and a Napa Valley Green Winery. Lisa is the face of Peju and is always on the road, representing the winery both nationally and internationally to build the brand and create new market opportunities. Tony learned to listen to his daughters’ input and appreciates their fresh ideas. “I’ve had to learn to be open-minded in order to make the best decisions for Peju” and adds that “their insight and ideas have been incredibly helpful.”

ROBINSON FAMILY VINEYARDS “Work Hard, Play Hard, Laugh Hard and Work a Little Harder” Tom, Susie, Kim, Robin and Carrie Longtime Napa Valley residents, Tom and Susie RobinsonJinks proudly carry on the Robinson Family Vineyards legacy which began in 1967 when Susie’s parents, retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Bud Robinson and his wife, Helen, purchased the 78-acre property that is part of what is now known as the renowned Stags Leap District and started a horse/cattle ranch. In 1970, they were convinced to plant the property to vineyards by friends and neighbors, including wineindustry pioneers Nathan Fay and Tom Turnbull. Robinson Family Vineyards was born and with it, the rich tradition in family winemaking that exists to this day. Susie, a former Army brat, began working in the vineyard and the winery alongside her father as a teenager. Tom Jinks, began helping out in the vineyard in high school when he began dating Susie. The pair married in 1971 and went on to long and successful careers in real estate and construction before “retiring” to full-time vineyard and winery management. Retirement meant focusing on the everyday operations of the family estate full-time and all the dirty hands, sore backs and endless paperwork that came with it. Daughters Kim, Robin and Carrie have the same work values and passion for the vineyard and have also blessed the family with eight grandchildren (seven boys and one girl) who also work at the winery during summer breaks and on special projects. Daughter Carrie works in the office with her mother Susie— keeping the business running smoothly and overseeing the day 18

to day operations. Kim and Robin are identical twins and work in the tasting room, the cellar, the crush pad and take turns caring for all the grandchildren and the animals on the property. I spent a lively afternoon with the family over some incredible wines. Kim commented, “Napa Valley is about farming and we respect the land that we have as well as the sheep, horses, cows and hogs. We love the fact that we work outdoors. And dad is a workaholic. He never stops. To get him to relax, we have to kick him off the property.” You can sense the pride Tom has in his daughters. Smiling he said, “I have taught them everything I could and made them strong. They can do anything they put their mind to and succeed. They are not afraid of hard work and can do punchdowns during harvest, pour concrete or wield a Skilsaw®.” The family has a great sense of humor. Robin laughing said, “Dad is crazy about animals. He plays music for the pigs and when the cows are calving he sleeps in his truck next to them to be sure all goes well.” I asked Kim what inspires her about her father and her answer was truly refreshing in a time when people have such complicated lives. “Hard work and living simply within your means.” As the party was winding down, granddaughter Alex bounded into the room. We asked her what she wanted to do when she grows up and she said calmly, “a veterinarian and winemaker.” So it continues.

Steve Brady is a dreamer and go-getter who fulfilled his vision of making wines in Napa Valley. He is founder and proprietor of On Q Wines – hand-crafted, ultra-premium wines produced from the finest grapes grown in the Coombsville subappellation. I sat down over a glass of Grenache Noir with Amanda and her father, Steve Brady. As a young man growing up in Napa Valley, he learned to appreciate and respect the significance of its winemaking history. He planted his first vineyard in his backyard in Brown’s Valley in 2003 with help from his three daughters who have been involved ever since. Steve’s also a semi-pro trumpet player and notes that “the creation of great music and the crafting of world-class wine share a key element: timing.” Youngest daughter, Marina is in London pursuing her Masters in Marketing Strategy and Innovation. She plans to rejoin the family business. Eldest, Megan is an OB/GYN physician in Chicago. Amanda resides in Napa and assists with finance and accounting; along with helping at winery events. Steve beams 20

that “Amanda can do anything she sets her mind upon. She bought her own house in Napa at age 23.” Her father was a good role model, taking classes and working countless hours in the vineyard and becoming a winemaker with his own brand. “His passion was inspirational,” Amanda says. “Whether it was school or business, I knew I could turn to him if I needed help.” Having trusted input from different perspectives is a way to gain insight. “I believe this diversity of thought forces me to look at things from another point of view and come to a more balanced decision,” says Steve. “Amanda provides both a woman’s perspective and one from the younger generation. It never hurts to have two sets of brains working on our challenges.” The take-away: These four father-daughter wine industry families have learned how to pair wine and family business successfully. Through their hard work and passion about wine and family – Tom Jinks, Mike Grgich, Tony Peju and Steve n Brady have each created a true Napa Valley legacy.

Cult Wines of Napa Valley There is no question that Napa Valley, one of the premier growing regions in the world, boasts hundreds of exceptional wineries. With almost 600 wineries spread throughout Napa, there are a handful that, over time have attained a rare recognition and following that is commonly referred to as “cult.” The cult movement can be said to have begun in the 1990s, when Napa Valley was just beginning to make its mark as a world-class wine region. There was a renaissance like determination to produce new world wines that would compare favorably with centuries old established wine regions, displaying the unique distinctive personalities of the winemaker, and the terroir. The cult movement wasn’t part of a long term plan or goal, it just “happened,” evolving over time, one select winery at a time. Cult wines share several common characteristics; they have received multiple 100 point scores, (generally from Robert Parker), and are small production. These highly sought-after wines are often available only through an allocation list, after being on a wait list of several years, and economically speaking, are pricey. The limited-production of cult wines coupled with a sense of mystery and allure, provides availability only to a select group of wine lovers who have the resources to purchase them. – BY DON SONDERLING- –

Napa Valley Wine Trolley

Before attaining cult status, a confluence of events has to take place. Grapes must be grown in the “right” terroir with the “right” consultant and winemaker managing the vinification process. These wines express a special “uniqueness” that is recognized by savvy wine consumers and wine professionals. After the wine receives its first 100 point score, it must then stand the test of time while developing an almost “fanatical” following. Cult wines aren’t planned – there has to be a mixture of luck and being in the right place at the right time with the right elements. You could say that the stars have to be in perfect alignment for a cult wine to be born.

In the Beginning Screaming Eagle In 1995, 19 years after the Judgment of Paris, which put Napa on the world stage, Screaming Eagle’s first release, a 1992 Cabernet, sent a shockwave through the wine world. Highly acclaimed, receiving a 99 point score from Robert Parker, this vintage sold out quickly, and in no time Screaming Eagle became the highest priced and most sought after wine in Napa Valley. The price skyrocketed as Screaming Eagle set the bar almost impossibly high to reach. This was the first true Napa cult wine, and has received four 100 point Parker scores to date.

Harlan Estate Founded in 1984, Harlan Estate enjoyed a meteoric rise in interest, similar to that of Screaming Eagle. The initial 1990 vintage, released in 1996, received instant acclaim and sold out instantly. The 1994 vintage received 100 points from Robert M. Parker, Jr., the first of five vintages of Harlan Estate to garner a perfect score.

Bond Estates In 1997 William Harlan, collaborating with winemaker Bob Levy, founded BOND, with the express goal of producing single vineyard, Grand Cru quality wine. Including the 2001 vintage, Bond has received a total of five 100 point ratings from Parker.

Additional Cult Trailblazers Screaming Eagle, Harlan and Bond may receive the recognition for being at the forefront of Napa cult wines, but several wineries have followed in their footsteps and remain firmly rooted as having earned cult status:

Colgin Cellars Founded in 1992 by Ann Colgin, a woman of un-parralled vision, Colgin Cellars has amassed twelve 100 point Parker ratings, starting with their 2002 “Tychson Hill” vintage, coincidentally, the same year the new state-of-the-art-winery was completed.

Schrader Cellars Since their first 100 point score, Schrader Cellars received in 2002, has amassed a total of 15 perfect scores, two of them awarded for separate 2013 releases.

Abreu Vineyards Since the 1997 vintage, Abreu Vineyards has earned eight 100 point scores. “When you work with a vineyard long enough, you get to know its personality. You know how to pull the best from it, no matter the vintage. That’s what it takes to make a great wine. A wine that actually may be around—to tell its own story—100 years from now,” says winemaker Abreu in expressing his philosophy.

And the List Goes On

Hertelendy Vineyards – A Rising Star

Rising Star Ralph Hertelendy, founder and winemaker of Hertelendy Vineyards has made an immediate impression in the wine world with his initial release of the Hertelendy 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. Praise was instantaneous, receiving a 95 point Robert Parker rating in the December issue of Wine Advocate magazine. Parker states, in part: “A surprise, big time sleeper for me…” and Master Sommelier Ian Cauble commented: “This is, without question, one of the best modern examples of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon we have tasted in quite some time and can easily hold its own in the brass ring of Napa’s superstars.” Will this be the beginning of catapulting Hertelendy into an elite group of Napa Valley cult wines? Only time will tell, but the start is propitious. There is no shortage of cult or cult-worthy wineries. The beauty of the trailblazers is that they inspired others to reach for the stars. Other names may not be as well known, but their wines are equal in every respect—-cult worthy, world worthy. No effort is spared in the creation of Hundred Acre wines. 1860-ish to 1985-ish It’s probably a good thing that articles like this, curating the semi-official history of the Napa Valley, come up every few years, showing a need for reminders which would be unnecessary in a less-dynamic business, region or philosophy of life. To situate Napa and its history is to understand it as just one example of what makes the Bay Area so very different from most other spots anywhere. It’s not just a place that’s difficult to get to or live in, but it’s also a place driven by the desire to strike out on one’s own and make something of the world around us in a way which leaves a lasting, yet untainted heritage. In that light, Napa is simply the best exemplar, the figures, organizations and movements discussed here, only the tip of the human drive and effort, which transformed a region based on visions of possibility and willingness to take unreasonable risk for uncertain rewards.

This is, indeed, an interesting moment in the history of Napa—the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the iconic Mondavi Winery and its mission-style bell tower in the heart of the Valley on Highway 29—to turn and really see the stages of development which have brought us to today. And there are definite periods produced, as history often is, by external events as much as internally derived outcomes; no surprise, then, that the story of today’s Napa has plenty of both. The Valley’s version slowly and sometimes not-so-slowly morphed unbelievably gorgeous rolling hillsides into equally impressive if no less beautiful in their own ways flowing rows of vines viewed through raised glasses at afternoon’s ebb. I’m not being grandiose in saying these descriptions—writers have said the same and more for several hundred years at this point about “the Napa Valley.” As the signs next to today’s vineyards say in the words of Robert Louis Stevenson from way back in 1880, “wine is bottled poetry.”

Early Contributors So, we can start to divide the story of “early” Napa into two phases: the “boom and bust” of early settlers through to the crash of Prohibition, and then the span of time of tremendous self-driven growth both in terms of wineries and winegrowing knowledge I would call “the great building,” the likes of which is often imitated but very seldomly repeated in wine regions around the world. While the former era is a time mostly remembered through random names scattered on maps and street signs throughout the Valley, the latter spans from World War II through to the mid-1980s. During this time Napa went from a handful of wineries, just barely surviving on sacramental 36

wines and railroaded grape shipments to Eastern home-based winemakers, to hundreds of wineries … an explosion not just of vineyards beyond previous bounds but of the idea of “Napa” itself in the minds of a tremendously varied range of people: wine lovers, entrepreneurs, natural-land use supporters, idealists, researchers of all stripes, international corporations, five million annual physical visitors, and countless others inspired to enjoy wine, make wine or grow vines—the list seems endless. That earliest Napa began was not with absent land holders but with people whose impact is still felt now. They recognized real differences within, and thus created multiple subappellations still used today. George C. Yount and his meticulous mapping of the mid-Valley micro-differences come immediately to mind and meticulously housed at St. Supéry. The understanding of the uniqueness of our ocean-influenced, extemely narrow valley brought major impacts to the winemaking table, which is perhaps insight into why every major branch of extremely well-known European winegrowing is seen in who remains from this period, testament to this vision and understanding of real, true, no-hype uniqueness: between Charles Krug’s founding of the first commercial winery in 1861 and Georges de Latour’s founding of Beaulieu Vineyards (BV) in 1900, the likes of Joseph Schram of Schramsberg, Gustave Niebaum of Inglenook, and the Beringer brothers, Jacob and Frederick, all opened their still-extant doors. Each underwent unique dips and rises, but each has earned its mention of long-lasting excellence for a reason. They were right, which is why prior to Prohibition, there were almost 200 wineries doing a brisk business before that all-too-humaninduced crash.

Moving on past that interregnum, the 1940s marked a turning point, not just because of the end of the war, but because of growing logistics: it takes about seven years before the first vintage of a newly planted, post-Prohibition red grapevineyard could possibly be ready to drink; several of those major early producers re-opened and several others arrived or came into their own: Georges de Latour at BV, John Daniel at Inglenook, Louis M. Martini also found his eponymous spot, and Robert and Peter Mondavi’s revival of Charles Krug. Most importantly for the foundation of future Napa enology, Andre Tchelistcheff, cellarmaster of cellarmasters at BV for half a century, came to the Valley. He brought not just a tremendous range of winegrowing knowledge but the ethos of the vital importance of knowledge creation and abundant sharing. This was echoed by the creation of the Napa Valley Vintners and the research impacts from the post-Prohibition re-founding of the UC Davis Viticlture and Enology Program in 1935. Because of the master’s influence on generations of subsequent winemakers in Napa and throughout California, the vintners’ pooled resources and marketing acumen which created “brand Napa,” and the constant and ongoing research done in Davis and Napa to create better winegrowing techniques, seven wineries in 1944 have become almost 600 wineries today.

eight surrounding Bay Area counties. Correspondingly as landmark and earthshattering was the (in)famous Paris Tasting of 1976, pitting the “best” of French old and first growths against the “upstarts” from Napa. The Judgment produced the totally unexpected results of Mike Grgich’s Chardonnay from Bo Barrett’s Chateau Montelena and Warren Winiarski’s Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars as the respective bests in the world, totally undoing in one afternoon decades, if not centuries, of arrogant preconceptions about New World wines. The film Bottle Shock wonderfully describes this story which spawned the next round of in-Valley propagation when Grgich almost immediately went on to found his own widely recognized Grgich Hills Estate, setting in motion many more wineries to come). 1976 also marked two important appellation moments. One with the founding of Domaine Chandon. So many who worked for this one company stayed in the wine business, founding their own wineries and vineyards—a testament to the contination of the Valley ethos of self-support. Second is the recognition of Los Carneros and Mt. Veeder as prime growing locations also sparked a tremendous planting surge of both ocean-facing, shallow-rooted, cold-loving varieties in the south and deep-rooting, insane-angle-loving heat-needing grapes up into the hillsides up and down the Valley and all its major and minor tributaries, setting in motion a series of landuse votes and marketing battles.

Standout Moments

Napa Valley Vintner Wine Auction

Lightly skipping forward again through the ripples of those tremendous first-generation contributions gives us the following standout moments from amongst the almost-infinite series of micro-dramas in what the creation and maintaince of a vineyard or winery truly is. In 1966, Robert Mondavi left Charles Krug to create his own place, and the impact of that move is much, much more than the wines themselves as Robert Mondavi was, unabashedly, not a winemaker. He was, rather, the progentitor of dreams for two generations of American wine drinkers through an endless range of events, tastings, competitions and proselytizing—to this day, Mondavi Private Reserve is a benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon bottling for these reasons and the most important of all: location, location, location. His brother, Peter, remaining at Charles Krug, more quietly but no less more impactfully changed the behind-the-scenes logistics and methods of a host of viticultural, enological and marketing practices, including vintage dating, cold fermentations and sterile filtering, amongst countless others. Equally, as demonstrated above, the place itself matters in many ways, which is why 1968’s establishment of the nation’s first agricultural preserve is such a landmark for so many varied groups of people. By limiting growth of one kind in order to foster the creation of another, agriculture-based Napa has stayed rural despite the rise of urbanization in the other

1981 marks the beginning of the third period with the first Napa Valley Vintner Wine Auction, heralding the arrival of the “big money” 1980s. In the following three decades, as result of the annual wine auction, many millions of dollars went directly back into local community housing and education efforts, repeating again the ethos that Napa supports and nurtures its own via community stewardship: the children and wine workers helped then are now wine professionals and winery or vineyard owners themselves in many instances because of almost $200 million in community support. The decision to stop for here, at 1985, is an arbitrary but nonrandom one as the mid-decade does, truly, mark an inflection point because of the outbreak of Phylloxera throughout the Valley and the need to re-plant vast stretches of what are now fully-mature vines, themselves now being pulled out and replanted at a much less frantic pace today. The insights and solutions to deal with that industry-wide misstep created the first wave of Napa “cults.” From the literal ashes of burnt, infectionfighting piles of vines sprang Bryant and Colgin, Dalla Valle and Dominus, Forman and Harlan, Opus One and Screaming Eagle, Staglin and Whitehall Lane, and on the list could go, which is where “Part the Second” will begin, my friends. Until then, Salud! and take in anew the liquid bounty from adventurers, willing to risk it all to make wines so wonderful, we sing their n praises centuries later still. Enjoy!

Innovative Independent Video Games is a bold interactive exhibition at Napa Valley Museum that invites visitors into the world of independently produced video games that are about more than just “play.” Ten fully playable gaming stations feature both well known and fringe indie games including Braid, Lumino City, Antichamber, Gravity Ghost and Passage. Visitors learn about the innovative approaches indie developers take to crafting games that challenge narrative tropes, upend traditional game mechanics and question the limits of the definition of a game. Empathy is explored within narrative games like That Dragon, Cancer and Coming Out Simulator, and the worlds of Mountain and Hohokum are discovered without worrying about fighting off enemies. In addition to the ten fully playable games and interactive media stations, a full schedule of public programs enhances the Museum experience, including retro gaming marathons, family fun days, character development workshops for budding game-designers and free movie nights. An exhibit that explores the art and design of digital media is new ground for the venerable art and history museum. When asked, “Why an exhibit about video games?” Curator Meagan Doud explains, “Our goal with this exhibition is to elevate the under-appreciated artistry and creativity of independent game developers, support the genre’s development, provoke audiences to reconsider the merits of gaming, relate with the vast numbers of people who game and reveal an unexpected world of possibility for visitors.” Keeping with the themes of innovation and challenging established thinking, the Museum employed a novel approach to the overall design of the exhibit. Forty-five students from Napa’s New Technology High School worked alongside Museum staff in a semester-long, project-based learning effort to develop core exhibit content. Teacher Lisa Gottfried’s “Game Design and Visual Effects” classes played a significant role in the exhibition’s development, which includes student-developed learning stations where visitors explore 3D modeling, the importance of music in video games and game mechanics. “Down the Rabbit Hole” is on view Wednesdays through Sundays through January 8, 2017. hen visiting Napa Valley, one has a plethora of choices as to where to imbibe, stay and play. This premier wine region, known world-wide for its idyllic vineyards and emerald

hills, offers visitors ample inspiration and near limitless options. With over five hundred Napa wineries and dozens upon dozens of dining establishments, it would take a lifetime to explore the area. To learn the most about the famous Valley, it is best to segment it into smaller parts rather than attempting to take in the entire region all at once. Luckily, at the very foot of Napa Valley, there are three distinct appellations: Oakville, Stags Leap and Yountville. OAKVILLE California’s First 100-Point Wine Oakville terroir is arguably the most coveted land in the Napa Valley, with plantable land selling for upwards of a million dollars per acre, officially making it the most expensive vineyard property in North America. Here, Cabernet Sauvignon is the undeniable king. A tiny district that encompasses a two-mile-wide strip of dirt which extends up to the 1,000 feet into the Vaca Mountains and 500 feet into the Mayacamas, it’s home to great diversity of soil types. Consequently, it’s also home to many of Napa Valley’s premier wine producers. A confluence of extraordinary terroir supported by world-class viticulturists, vintners and winemakers have produced unprecedented results—Oakville is the birthplace of many of the world’s most coveted Cabernets. Its weather and soil conditions resemble the fable of Goldilocks—not too much, not too little, everything is just right. The area’s wineries routinely produce Cabernets that are lush and complex, showing great structure along with balanced acidity and tannins. In addition, other varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese and Zinfandel thrive there, along with a smattering of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Oakville is home to such renown producers as Groth, (California’s first 100-point wine, 1985 Groth Reserve), Nickel and Nickel, Opus One and Joseph Phelps. It also spawned “cult wine” producers such as Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate. New stars such Bevan Cellars and MacDonald are turning heads. Getting on these new “cults-to-be” mailing lists before they close should be a top priority for fervent oenophiles.

Robert Mondavi Winery No reference to Oakville could ever be complete without writing about the iconic Robert Mondavi. In 1966, Robert Mondavi launched his namesake brand, the first major US winery since the repeal of Prohibition. Mondavi wines would become a reference point for California wine for decades to come. His overarching belief in the role of terroir as a foundation for great wine solidified his prominence in California winemaking history. The brand was built around grapes grown in the legendary 440-acre To Kalon vineyard, a piece of land known for producing some of the most famous Cabernets in the world. In 1968, in addition to producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Mr. Mondavi launched one of the most successful wines in Napa Valley history, a barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc that he named “Fumé Blanc.” One specific bottling made with fruit grown on a five-acre block planted in 1945, named I-Block, is one of the most coveted Napa white wines. The brand’s current winemaker, Genevieve Janssens continues the founder’s tradition of crafting balanced wines that reflect the very essence of the vineyards.

SILVER OAK CELLARS

“Life is” always “a Cabernet” at the ever-influential Silver Oak Cellars. They established a powerful precedent by single-mindedly focusing on one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. For forty years, Silver Oak bucked the trends and stuck to their motto of crafting approachable wines, aged in new and used oak, that can be enjoyed upon release, or easily cellared. Founded in 1972 by oil magnate Ray Duncan and viticulturist/winemaker late Justin Meyers, the brand steadily built momentum as one of the most recognized American wines. The fruit comes from estate Napa and Alexander Valley vineyards as well as select growers. The wine is aged for 25 months in American oak, and rests in bottle for 14 months, an unusual aging regimen that allows the wines to reach greater potential prior to release. Production has increased over the years, yet the quality and commitment to excellence in the vineyard and the cellar remained. Ray’s son, David, is forging ahead with his “fifty-year plan” that is rooted in innovation, sustainability, land improvement and stellar customer service. Their unwavering commitment to sustainability resulted in being awarded a Napa Green Winery Certification acknowledging their efforts in water and energy conservation. Their release parties are legendary, with consumers queuing up for rare library offerings and large formats. The winery chef, Dominic Orsini, a CIA graduate, creates inventive dishes that complement the wines using seasonal ingredients, partly sourced from the winery’s own gardens. VERY NAPA VALLEY

B Cellars Another favorite is a relative newcomer, B Cellars. It is the brainchild of owners Jim Borsack and Duffy Keys, who share a mutual passion for inspired wine and food pairings. Keys, a former Four Seasons executive and Borsack, a luxury goods company co-owner, were determined to offer a different, and decidedly upscale, consumer winery experience. They named their soon-tobe winery B Cellars as an homage to Brix, a term that refers to sugar content, used by winemakers. To actualize their wine vision, they hired a skilled winemaker, Kirk Venge, son of renown vintner, Niles Venge who created California’s first 100-point wine. The aim was to make wines utilizing top vineyards and cohesively blending several varieties. Securing fruit contracts from famed grower Andy Beckstoffer has given Kirk an opportunity to craft a diverse portfolio of stellar wines. To complete their dream scenario, they brought on the accomplished Napa Valley chef, Derek Kuntz. Chef Kuntz’s creative menus celebrate seasonal ingredients; sourcing fresh produce from the winery’s garden, and fashioning inventive wine pairings using housemade bread, jams, and cheeses.

Napa Cellars Located in the heart of Oakville, Napa Cellars is another noteworthy brand. Its original owner, Charlie R. Woods, acquired five acres of land. He founded the winery in 1968 with the intent of making a variety of red wines. The Trinchero Family now owns Napa Cellars and hired its current winemaker, Joe Shirley. He crafts a large portfolio of well-priced wines, which are designed to deliver value, consistency and quality to the consumer. Crafting palate-friendly wines that also offer age-ability requires great fruit sources, and Shirley has those resources at his fingertips. He is able to pick and choose the best fruit from several Napa appellations. He is a master blender and makes several red blends, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and small lots of sparkling and late harvest wines.

STAGS LEAP DISTRICT Changed American Wine History Next door to venerable Oakville district, lies Stags Leap District. The first winery was built there in 1878 and is now home to Regusci Winery. 1893 marks the first recorded mention of “Stag’s Leap” as the namesake of a winery started by entrepreneur, Horatio Chase. The name’s origin is unknown, although most believe it’s an homage to a tale referencing a clever stag, who eluded hunters by leaping from peak to peak. The arrival of Prohibition left little chances of making wine. Additionally, due to dreaded phylloxera vine disease, many vineyards were converted to fruit orchards. In 1961, Nathan Fay revived the region by planting his first vineyard, seventy acres of Cabernet Sauvignon vines along Silverado Trail. Notably, at the time, only 800 acres of Cabernet existed in the entire country. By contrast, today there are close to 90,000 acres in California alone. The district catapulted to worldwide fame in 1976 during what’s now known as the “Judgement of Paris.” At a Parisian blind tasting, nine French judges chose 1973 Stags Leap Cellars Cabernet over French First Growths. This coup d’état changed the course of American wine history. It showed that California wines could compete on the world’s stage. The region was awarded its sub-appellational status due to the unique soil composition. Partly volcanic, partly clay-like loam, these gravely terroirs have great drainage which results in vines that yield powerful fruit, full of intense flavor. Wide day/night temperature shifts allow the fruit to achieve perfect ripeness. The signature varietal of Stag’s Leap is, undoubtedly, Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot. However, don’t underestimate its other grape prowess. There are some excellent Chardonnays and Petite Sirahs crafted there as well.

Quixote Winery The Petite Syrah grown by Quixote Winery, once tasted, can be never forgotten. Quixote certainly stands out from other wineries. Carl Doumani, the original proprietor, commissioned renown Austrian architect, Friedenreich Hundertwasser to design the winery. Hundertwasser believes that perfection in a form of straight lines is too stifling, so his designs were always “outside the lines.” Part art, part whimsy, visitors feel as though they have fallen into a fairy-tale. Surrounded by sunlit hills and an idyllic, vineyard-covered landscape, Quixote is home to twenty-nine acres of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petite Syrah and Petit Verdot. (Doumani vowed never to plant any white varieties.) Carl chose to focus on Petite Syrah. He turned out to be an uncommon visionary; it turned out that the site’s unique soil confluence was ideally suited for this variety. Winemakers Aaron Pott and Damon Bailey craft the most exciting Petite Syrah in the Valley. In addition, they produce phenomenal Cabernets and a tiny bit of Malbec, all from organically farmed vineyards. Their wines are stunningly delicious on release, yet infinitely age-worthy.

QUIXOTE WINERY

Chimney Rock Another significant Stags Leap winery is Chimney Rock. Hack and Stella Wilson bought 180 acres in Stags Leap District in 1980 and started planting vineyards. Their first wines were released in 1989. Disaster struck soon after in the form of phylloxera, forcing replanting. The upside was a better understanding of the soil types, expanded knowledge of rootstock and better matched clonal selections. In 2004, Terlato family acquired the estate, pursuing further plantings, and maintaining the highest quality control. With 119 acres under vine, under the careful tutelage of winemaker Elizabeth Vianna, the property turns out wines of distinction and finesse. Elizabeth is a vineyardist, who coaxes out the site’s full potential. She is an intuitive artisan, who practices lowintervention, authentic style of winemaking. Dedicated to dominantly Bordeaux varieties, the wines showcase Stags Leap Districts’ terroir advantage. The building itself, modeled after South African Cape Dutch-style architecture, is a great place to visit. Their tastings are both informative and fun.

CHIMNEY ROCK

Ilsley Vineyards One, off-the-beaten-path winery well worth visiting is Ilsley Vineyards. The wines are a testimony to more than sixty years of excellence in farming. Their story started 100 years ago when Ernest and June Ilsley first came to Napa Valley. It was Robert Mondavi that, in 1964, suggested to Ilsleys that their newly acquired ranch be planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1966, they found themselves growing fruit for both Robert Mondavi Winery and Charles Krug. In 1985, Ernest became one of the original concept creators for what is now known as Stags Leap AVA. The next generation, Ed and Sandy, took up residence in 1962 and began to grow grapes. Everyone in the family, including their children, who are now adults, are hands-on. Dedicated mainly to Bordeaux varieties, the family’s viticultural prowess spans several decades of trial and triumph. Now armed with state-of-the-art modern tools, every aspect of the vineyard is monitored. Winemaker Heather Pyle joined Ilsley in 2009, having previously worked at Robert Mondavi Winery. She makes small lots of delicious, ILSLEY VINEYARDS charming and age-worthy wines. 60

Shafer Vineyards Speaking of Shafer, if you can secure an appointment at this treasure trove of all things great about Napa Valley wine, you will be in great hands. Adjacent to Quixote, it has been an exemplary entity in viticulture, winemaking and charitable giving. In 1972, founder, John Shafer left a flourishing career in the Midwest to become one of the most revered figures in Napa Valley. YOUNTVILLE Rich in Viticultural History The Yountville district became a sub-appellation of Napa Valley in 1998. It’s viticultural history, however, started in the 1800s, when George Calvert Yount first planted vineyards near the town which now bears his name. When Yount first saw the Napa Valley, he said, “In such a place I should love to live and die.” He settled there in 1836, and planted the first vineyard in the Valley. Today, there are 2,700 acres under vine, thriving in rich, varied soils amid a unique microclimate; the valley’s chilliest region. The long, cool growing season produces age-worthy wines that show concentrated flavors and velvety tannins. The dominant varieties cultivated there are Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauviginon. It’s easy to walk (or bike) the entire town, given it’s a little over a mile long … be sure to take advantage of its Art Walk.

Keever Vineyards There is a plethora of wineries in the region, despite the appellation’s diminutive size. However, many can only be visited by prearranged appointment. One such standout is Keever Vineyards. Bill and Olga Keever fell in love with panoramic valley views and decided to plant a vineyard. Enter Jim Barbour, viticulturist extraordinaire, who turned a former horse farm into a stable of premium vineyards. They have been making spectacular wines under the skillful tutelage of superstar winemaker, Celia Welch. No detail is overlooked, down to custom-designed tanks and tireless tastings involving the family members along with Celia’s venerable palate. The winery is clearly a family affair, with every member fulfilling either a production, administrative or marketing role.

New Eats in Napa Valley The wine and food paradise that is Napa Valley is constantly changing. Old standards like The French Laundry and Lucy remain popular destinations, but don’t underestimate the newcomers to the dining scene. From fusion to traditional cuisines, foodies have their pick from the city of Napa to Calistoga. Here are seven new spots to add to the culinary map: — BY SHOSHANA HEBSHI —

Miminashi — Downtown Napa The city’s only izakaya restaurant, tavern-style Japanese food that goes far beyond California rolls and udon. Chef Curtis DiFede researched Japanese culture and cuisine for years to bring Miminashi to Napa. Yakitori is cooked on an open grill, and the menu features Japanese pub food like noodles and rice dishes, as well as whole roasted chicken and other large plates. Don’t miss the Japanese “soft cream,” a soft serve ice cream in unusual flavors like black sesame and matcha green tee and equally unusual toppings, like tempura crispies and sesame honeycomb candy.

The Charter Oak at Meadowood — St. Helena Chef Christopher Kostow and Director Nathaniel Dorn, of three Michelin star The Restaurant at Meadowood, announced last fall an expansion to create a less formal restaurant in the former location of Tra Vigne. That vision is manifesting in The Charter Oak, which is slated to open in early 2017 and will feature a simplified menu, with rustic and refined dishes. Elemental, is what Owners Christopher Kostow and Nathaniel Dorn have revealed about the restaurant’s theme. Though the menu is not yet public, hints have been made that it will include dishes along the lines of rotisserie pork shoulder with a miso of acorns and a bowl of house-cultured yogurt and cold tomatoes.

Basalt — Downtown Napa Featuring a seasonal California cuisine, head chef Esteban Escobar accents the menu with Spanish, Mexican and Portuguese flavors. Meals are meant to be shared at Basalt, where diners can break bread at a communal table inside or along a 70-seat riverside patio. Summer fare includes an heirloom melon salad, adobo charred pork tenderloin and cherry parfait for dessert, made with buffalo milk ice cream. 82

Protea — Yountville Fast and casual may not be readily associated with Napa Valley dining, but Protea is bucking the trend, offering a daily rotating menu of Latin American-inspired street food like tacos, tostadas, empanadas and rice and bean bowls. Executive Chef and Owner Anita Cartagena has concocted a Michelin-star worthy eatery using local foods at affordable prices.

Johnny’s Restaurant & Bar — Calistoga

Right on the main drag of the northern Napa Valley town of Calistoga, Johnny’s Restaurant and Bar opened this spring inside the historic Mount View Hotel. The space, split into two rooms, offers a casual “bar side” on one end and a more intimate sit-down “table side” on the other. The menu is an eclectic mix of Wine Country fare, featuring tastes of Italian, German and Mexican cuisines—the cultures that settled the area. The restaurant also features a charcuterie and an oyster bar. Named after former mayor “Mr. Calistoga” Johnny Ghisolfo, the restaurant and bar is a resurrection of a former restaurant also named “Johnny’s” that opened in the hotel in the 1930s.

Galpão Gaúcho Brazilian Steakhouse — Napa A departure from the gourmet California cuisine of Napa Valley, Galpão Gaucho recently opened at the intersection of Highway 29 and Trower Avenue to offer a menu reminiscent of Brazilian cowboy culture. Its menu boasts 17 different cuts of grilled meats roasted over an open fire, then presented and cut table side. Its gourmet salad bar features 40 items, including cured meats and imported cheeses, traditional side dishes like caramelized bananas and rice and beans, and fresh fruits and vegetables. The steakhouse offers a casual and contemporary setting and a fixed price dining experience.

TWO BIRDS/ONE STONE

Two Birds/One Stone calls itself “Japanese ethos meets California inspiration.” Chefs Douglas Keane and Sang Yoon have created a yakitori-centric restaurant with a focus on poultry and vegetables. The two chefs appeared together on “Top Chef Masters” in 2013. Diners can choose from Asian-influence dishes like pork belly with spicy yuzu glaze and kimchee, chicken thigh with young onions and a Thai basil vinaigrette and chicken meatballs with green onions and hoisin sauce.
