Summer Jazz Series with The Jennifer Leitham Trio

T

he Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CVRep) in association with Bill Saitta will wind up its Summer Jazz Series with The Jennifer Leitham Trio featuring jazz bassist/composer/vocalist Jennifer Leitham along with Randy Drake on Drums, and pianists Andy Langham (Thursday, August 25 and Friday, August 26) and Rich Eames (Saturday, August 27.)

Ms. Leitham, a career Jazz musician for over 40 years has shared the stage with many renowned performers including Mel Torme’, Peg-

gy Lee, George Shearing, Woody Herman, Benny Carter, Louis Bellson, Doc Severinsen, k.d. lang and many others. As a recording artist, she has played on over 125 albums, including 10 albums of her own, (including her huge hit “The Real Me”) and is currently working on another album.

Jennifer has been a featured artist at many of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals and clubs. She has recently performed as a guest or appeared with her trio at some of the finest venues in the world,

including The Blue Note, Iridium, Kitano, Small’s, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York, The Toronto Pride Fest, The Bohem Festival in Budapest and The Louis Armstrong Jazz Festival in Bank, Hungary, Breda Jazz Fest in the Netherlands; Münster Jazz Festival in France; Catalina’s, Vitello’s, blue whale, The Lighthouse, The Warner Grand and Renberg Theaters in Los Angeles, Boston Court PAC in Pasadena, KSDS Jazz Live at the Saville Theater and Dizzy’s in San Diego, Mammoth Lakes and Sacramento Festi-

Named one of the 50 most interesting people of 2016 by L.A. Weekly Magazine, Jennifer’s bass lines have graced many movies and TV shows. Her life story is featured in the award-winning documentary, “I Stand Corrected.” Honored with 11 Best Film Audience and Jury Awards, it blazed a trail at film festivals around the world in 2012.

She is a bassist, vocalist, composer, arranger, lyricist, producer, and an active educator. She has taught at every level, from beginners to grad students and working professionals across the country. Jennifer is currently teaching private students globally in cyberspace via Skype.

‘Finding ReUse’ Art Exhibit at La Quinta City Hall The Community Art Gallery at City Hall has a new exhibit opening today. “Finding ReUse” - things found and repurposed into art. Bill Schinsky, of the Coachella Valley Art Center, curated the exhibit which features sculpture works by La Quinta resident, Kika Koki, and photography by Coachella Valley resident Ken Foto. The exhibit will be on display until October 10.

This exhibit features the approach and manipulations of natural and found objects by two artists working in the mediums of Assemblage and Photography.

Kika Koki, Assemblage artist currently resides in La Quinta. Kika works with old stuffed animals and re-creates them into sculptural objects using glues and desert sands.

What once were soft, cuddly playmates become hard yet heart touching childhood memories.

Kika also gathers leaves and other plant materials normally destined for the compost pile. By adding a hardening liquid, she changes loose brittle natural materials into formal sophisticated sculptures.

Photographer Kenneth Geiger wandered the world, finding interest and visual beauty in discarded objects. Geiger often times inserts

Found object sculpture by Kika Koki himself into the image by holding the thrown away object so that the camera can capture it “floating” in mid-air. Geiger’s creative treatment of what is normally described as “trash” elevates it to an image of interest and wonder.

An exhibit reception will be held on Thursday, August 25 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at City Hall. The artists and curator will be available for a discussion on their works, their creative approach, and creative opportunities that continually exist for re-using materials that are destined for landfills.

Did You Know?

Margaret Ives Abbott was the first American woman to win at an Olympic event, she won the women’s golf tournament. The 1900 Games, the first in which women were allowed to compete, included 11 female athletes competing in the golf, tennis, and yachting. However, these games were so poorly organized and publicized that many competitors, including Abbott, did not realize that the events they entered were part of the Olympics. Historical research did not establish that the game was on the Olympic program until after Abbott’s death (1955), so she herself never knew she was an Olympian.

Community Spotlight This Week Lovely dinner put on by L & L Catering (Lorry and Leon) with Judy’s selling tickets & Camille collecting tickets at the dinner. They did a tasty job! There were seven tables full of people happily chowing down.

Thanks to the two gals from the church that volunteered their time that helped keep things moving.

Everyone wants to get into the pool - including a desert beetle “aka” cockroach or palmetto bug.

It was resting on a float on the pool rope waiting to be rescued. Camille sucked it into a bottle with a bit of pool water and it was put outside.

Then the next day it was taking out a small lizard who came to drink in the pool and fell in!

Beautiful memorial piece and family pictures were on our bulletin board, remembering Richard Hansen. There was a celebration of life in Sikta for him and a baseball game was dedicated to him in Alaska.

Heard from Jeannette McA. She is doing well in her new home. Made friends from Seal Beach and Philly.

The place has an exercise class, a nothing over $l store. Said she thinks of us all and wanted to know how we were doing? She’s scheduled for cataract surgery in October when she will have both eyes done.

I found the exoskeleton of a Katydid on the porch ramp. Guess this summer was the seventh year.

Haven’t heard any of them “sing-

ing” though. They rub the ends of their front wings together to produce a chirp. If you count the chirps in l5 seconds and then add 37 to it you will have the temperature in F. They are a member of the cricket and grasshopper family.

For those who wanted to know what that bright orange blooming shrub is in the front lawn? “Pentas lanceolate” is one of the best butterfly-attracting plants around.

It blooms all summer long, even during the hottest days, with large clusters of starry blooms that attract butterflies as well as hummingbirds”. John at DHS Florist and Nursery has several ones in orange ready to plant.

Ron Cohn Brings New Show to Palm Desert Local performer Ron Cohn will once again bring a new show to the Arthur Newman Theater at the Joslyn Center in Palm Desert. The show is called “Wheel Of Fortune” and will be one show only on Sunday, August 28, at 2 p.m. This show will be his seventh annual show for the cabaret series presented by Les Michaels and the Sundays In Summer Series. Joining Mr. Cohn will be his long-time musical director and pianist, Denis Moreen.

Ron Cohn is a former East Coaster with cabaret connections to New York City and Chicago as a performer, director, booking, press and publicity agent. Ron’s known for his storytelling and for selecting songs that are well known but not overdone. He also uses personal stories and fun facts to connect them to famous people. “Wheel Of Fortune” will feature an array of songs filled with mirth from such composers as Johnny Mercer, Cy Coleman, Mel

What’s the Most Watched Championships?

On average, the NFL Super Bowl is the most-watched TV broadcast in the United States. The 2015 Super Bowl had more viewers than any other so far, with 115 million people tuning in to see the New England Patriots defeat the Seattle Seahawks.

The most popular World Series in baseball was in 1986 when over 36 million viewers tuned in to watch the New York Mets take it home. Televised broadcasts of the Series have been losing viewers in recent years, with as few as 12 million in 2012.

Slang Origins ‘Stove Up’ Meaning: To be stiff or sore.

Origin: This phrase for sore or stiff has nothing to do with a stovetop; stove is actually the past tense of stave. To stave in a wooden boat is to smash a hole in its side,

and thus, to be stove up is to be incapacitated or damaged. These words are related to the noun stave, the term for one of those flat pieces of wood in a barrel. Similarly, to stave off hunger is to metaphorically beat it back, as if with a stick.

It’s tomato season — that time of year when the garden weighs heavily with fruit and farmers’ market tables teeter with piles of glorious sun-sweetened tomatoes. It’s impossible to resist plucking and popping the juicy fruit directly in the mouth. That’s right: tomatoes are technically a fruit, which might help to explain their natural sweetness and immediate appeal for nibbling. Yet even for the most ardent tomato lovers, when tomatoes are showering us at the height of season it’s a challenge to keep up with the harvest. This recipe screams simplicity, showcasing sun-kissed tomatoes with little fuss. If you are lucky enough to have access to heirloom tomatoes, feel free to substitute them with colorful results. And if you shop with your eyes and come home with more than you can immediately use (or gobble up), store tomatoes at room temperature away from direct sunlight.

Corn and Tomato Salad Ingredients • 2 ears corn, grilled • 1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes, halved • 1 bunch Italian parsley, stems removed, leaves chopped • 1/2 small red onion, chopped • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Directions 1. Cut kernels from grilled corn and place in a bowl. Add tomatoes, parsley and onion. Stir to combine.

Whisk oil, lime juice, cumin, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Pour over salad and toss well. Serve immediately. Serves 4.
