ant to know what it’s like to sit inside a vintage world war two or Korean era aircraft? Every Saturday morning from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., visitors to the Palm Springs Air Museum can do just that! All the Open Cockpits take place inside the air-conditioned hangars (either the South – Pacific / Navy hangar, or the North – European / Army hangar). You’ll be climbing inside the cockpit, so please
wear loose, comfortable clothing, and the aircraft will appreciate you wearing rubber-soled shoes. (Physical restrictions apply). Bring a camera, or for $5, Air Museum staff will take a digital photo of you sitting in the cockpit that you can take with you. The Palm Springs Air Museum is an educational non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve and honor our veterans while educating future generations. One of the largest collections of flying WWII aircraft, 9,500 volume Library, flight simulators and tours through a flyable B-17 are housed in 65,000 square feet of climate controlled exhibit space. Movies show in the Buddy Rogers Theatre continuously after 11 a.m. Open daily, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and February 17, 2017) admission ranges from $9 to $16, free for children 5 and under and for active military with ID. he 15th Anniversary Big Bear Renaissance Faire is three weekends, August 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21. The faire takes place at Pedersen Sawmill, located in Fawnskin at 39-115 Rim of the World Drive. The jousting tournaments are only part of the on-going medievalthemed entertainment at the Renaissance Faire. There are five stages of continuous entertainment including three general stages, a children’s stage, and a NC-17 stage. Note: Children under 17 should not attend the NC-17 stage performances.

he Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre (CV Rep) welcomes back singer Janene Lovullo for its Summer Cabaret Series when she joins Musical Director Christopher Marlowe for “Too Marvelous for Words, Celebrating the Music of Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen,” August 5-7, at the Rep’s Rancho Mirage venue. Lovullo follows up her success in CV Rep’s musical revue “Laughter, Love and Lunacy.” This third collaboration with pianist Marlowe spotlights just a few of the 1500 song lyrics penned by Mercer and 500 songs composed by Arlen. Location, Location, Location Coachella Repertory Theatre’s Artistic Director Ron Celona has announced the first phase of realizing the Rep’s dream of owning their own home, and it’s BIG — both in size of dream and venue: Desert Cinemas in Cathedral City. Celona says there are a few hoops to jump through yet, but the Board has given the go-ahead to start the processes of administrative detail and fundraising. The next phase will be the major press and community announcement at the early part of next season. “It will take some time, but we will continue to put on a wide variety of productions, workshops and special events,” he adds.

Grace Mark Our friend and colleague Grace Mark passed away June 30th at home in Rancho Mirage. Grace Barrett Arons Mark was born in Wash. D.C., and received her Master of Arts from the University of Kentucky. Her early career included writing, marketing and creative direction in advertising. She was the recipient of several awards of distinction from the advertising clubs of New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. She wrote the critically acclaimed novel “The Dream Seekers” and co-authored “Ignorance of the Law: What You Need to Know About Tough New Laws to Stay out of Trouble” with Patrick Tuite and her husband Norman Mark, an Emmywinning Chicago broadcaster and journalist, who also was a regular on my local TV show “Desert Entertainment This

eloved mensch, Hollywood icon and comedy maven Garry Marshall died in Burbank on Tuesday, July 19 of complications from pneumonia brought on by a stroke. If you were ever lucky enough to meet this amazing man or had the luxury of a chat with him, you would appreciate how much he will be missed. A superb and self-effacing storyteller, a sports fanatic who preferred participating over watching, a Family Man in capital letters, he also “knew funny” like nobody’s business and passed this wisdom down through a generation of writers in an array of fields. I was in my ‘20s when I was introduced by mutual friends to the man many called Mr. Television in honor of his string of monster-rated sit-coms like Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. I was still playing pro tennis while simultaneously developing a small but regularly working reputation as an actor. Garry, who was about to add the sobriquet Mr. Movie to his many hyphenated showbiz titles, loved tennis but was possessed of a horrible backhand. I remember the first time I saw his and wife Barbara’s gorgeous Toluca Lake estate, which sat surprisingly close to the Ventura Freeway. Barbara poured me coffee and Garry walked me out to his court. To put me at ease he remarked, “The traffic noise gets loud sometimes. We pretend it’s the ocean lapping on the shore.” Garry had definite ideas about his passions. For example, the only good backhand was a one-handed backhand. Unfortunately, his was out of whack with a strange grip that forced him to lead with his elbow. “Does this ever hurt?” I asked him, grasping his arm. He looked surprised and nodded yes. “Your backhand is the culprit – your technique is assaulting your elbow tendons.”

Garry and Barbara have always been the most loyal people on Planet Earth. If you worked with or for them and did a good job, whether you were an actor, a gardener, a production assistant, a still photog, a grip on a film set or a tennis teacher, they kept you employed. I acted in seven Garry Marshall projects and they gave tennis lessons with me as birthday and Christmas gifts to their kith and kin. It was Garry who liked the way I expressed myself in conversation and urged me to start writing “like you talk.” He showed me an original script called The Three Thousand and shared each new rewrite with me until it became Pretty Woman. I learned more about writing

So I demonstrated a two-handed stroke and explained why it would solve all his problems. Did I mention that Garry could be stubborn? It took six weeks of bi-weekly lessons to convince him to TRY hitting the ball with both hands. He had his ah-ha moment 10 minutes later and spent his remaining years on the court singing the praises of his two-fisted shot. When someone disagreed with his assessment, he pointed at me and said, “Be careful. She giveth the backhand and she can taketh it away.”

Even when I moved out of Los Angeles to pursue a song writing deal in Nashville followed by journalism and water conservation careers in the Mojave Desert, we kept in touch by card and letter and, more occasionally, by phone. He and Barbara liked the desert and I enjoyed seeing them when they visited other friends in the CV. And through the years, Garry encouraged me to send him anything I’d written and would give an honest opinion. If he liked it, you knew you had something. Multiply my story by hundreds and you get the gist of Garry’s mentoring practices. There are tons of actors and writers and comedians and assistant directors and directors who owe their success to this wonderful and generous man. We’ll all miss him.

nzo Amodeo was born in Sicily, where cuisine is often considered a significant form of artistic expression. As a high school teenager, he began making meals for his buddies “just for fun” and in the ensuing years, after coming to the US, he systematically acquired valuable hands-on training at well-known eateries in New York, Chicago and Orange County. Now settled in the Coachella Valley, Enzo and son/co-owner Angelo are successfully partnered in offering their unique style of culinary brio through a tasty enterprise, Bucatini Trattoria. (In Italian, trattoria = casual restaurant.) Conveniently located near the new Century La Quinta Theater, Bucatini is a charming and inviting place. First, enjoy the dancing water from a fountain on the patio where misters mitigate the desert heat during warmer weather. When you enter the large, attractive dining room, you’ll notice an open pipework-industrial ceiling offset by a multi-hued, wooden floor. On the walls, boldly colored vignettes by artist William Cain depict Italian village life, all the while framing an animated and friendly crowd – Bucatini has obviously become a treasured gathering place to meet and eat.
Do yourself a favor and watch Chef Enzo’s wizardry with Bucatini’s Marra Forni Neapolitan wood-fired brick oven. Crafted in Naples, Italy, this high performance fire-breathing kiln can bake Bucatini’s wonderfully slim crusts in under a minute at temperatures of up to 850 degrees. If you love pizza, you have found the Promised Land. “We make the dough and the sauce from scratch each day,” Enzo said, gesturing with a large wooden spatula as he flourished it in and out of the flames. “We only use the finest and freshest ingredients – including San Marzano tomatoes and fresh mozzarella.” When I sat down with Angelo to discuss in greater detail the restaurant he and his father have created, he sounded justifiably proud. “We offer quality food in satisfying portions for a modest price,” Angelo said. “And although we have only been in operation for a few years, we have developed a fine group of regular customers that drop by two or three times a week. As for those who don’t know us yet, we are so much more than a simple pizzeria.” How true! On the dinner menu, there are ample entrée choices for meat, pasta or fish lovers, some more traditional, others with a decidedly edgy/modern flare. For example, Bucatini offers the Tagliata

Chianina (highest quality beef tenderloin grilled rare and delicately sliced, finished in a Cabernet and peppercorn reduction sauce). My personal favorite would be the Salmone Alla Griglia (flaky and moist grilled salmon, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and herbs, served with sautéed and steamed broccoli florets). Other intriguing specialties of the house are also well represented on the dinner menu. Angelo’s personal recommendations include the Spaghetti Pescatora (olive oil, garlic, shrimp, scallops, salmon, calamari, Manila clams and mussels in a light, spicy tomato sauce – also available in Risotto style); and the Tagliarini Crostacei (linguini with garlic, olive oil, cherry tomatoes lobster meat, lobster tail, snow crab meat and scallops, in a spicy, white wine sauce). And for those with grain sensitivity, feel free to order gluten-free pasta or pizza crust for a small additional charge. Of course, Bucatini provides an equally attractive mid-day menu featuring an array of Paninis and Strombolis with friendly prices in the $8-$14 range. Some best sellers include: the Crudo (thinly sliced prosciutto di parma, fresh mozzarella, arugula and olive oil served on country bread pressed in the Panini Grill); and the Panino Pollo (grilled chicken breast, mozzarella, basil pesto spread, smoked gouda and arugula on homemade ciabatta bread). Another classic lunch choice would have to be the Panino Polpette, a hearty meatball sandwich topped with a marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese, also on ciabatta. In keeping with their breadth of service, Bucatini provides luncheon specials which can change daily. I recommend the Steak Salad because it represents the familiarity of a traditional dish enhanced by Enzo’s creative flourishes: flank steak with wild mixed greens tossed in a mixture of balsamic vinaigrette, dried cranberries, bacon bits, goat cheese, sweet onions and heirloom cherry tomatoes.

loyd and Bess Shields came to the California Desert in 1924 and started Shields Date Garden. Together they worked long and hard hours to build their business and educate their customers about date culture. In the beginning Floyd Shields would give his lectures in the gardens. As the popularity grew of his lectures he incorporated a slide show. Eventually a recorded version was made that shows continuously during store hours. It was named “The Romance and Sex Life of the Date.” You can still hear Floyd Shields talking about his favorite subject. Dates! It is a true honor for all of us at Shields to continue Floyd and Bess Shields vision. Shields Date Garden opened at its current location on Christmas Day, 1924. COACHELLA BECOMES INCORPORATED

oachella, known as the “City of Eternal Sunshine,” was incorporated with a population of 1,000 residents. It was, and still is, largely a rural, agricultural, family-oriented community. The town lies 68 feet below sea level and the nearby Salton Sea lies 227 feet below sea level. The city also lends its name to the Coachella grapefruit. The town stretches along State Route 111, which is named Grapefruit Blvd. in its honor. The local U.S.O. in Coachella dispensed hospitality to the troops, and local volunteers gave time to feed and entertain those stationed in the desert.

Lights Out
will give you fright-night heebie jeebies By Neil Pond

re you afraid of the dark? If you are, then here’s something to really give you some fright-night heebie jeebies. In Lights Out, a family is menaced in a big, old “haunted house” by a beastly figure that shuns light and can only be glimpsed in the shadows of darkNeil Pond ness.
Lights on, it disappears. Lights off, it attacks. It’s name is Diana. Expanding on his well-received threeminute short film of the same title, firsttime feature director-writer David F. Samberg makes an impressive debut, proving you don’t need mega bucks to get maxi scares. Cinematographer Marc Spicer, who worked on Moulin Rouge, The Wolverine and The Shallows, makes the most of every creepy angle, tracking shot and dark blob in the background that might be nothing, or might be something else— something far more menacing, vengeful and deadly. Maria Bello plays Sophie, a mom with serious mental-issue baggage she’s been dragging around since childhood. Teresa Palmer is her grown daughter, Rebecca,

Gabriel Bateman and Teresa Palmer star in the big-screen adaptation of Lights Out, a film that began as a low-budget short, uploaded to YouTube who’s moved out, playfully fending off the advances of her amorous boyfriend, Brit (Alexander DiPersia). Her little brother, Martin (Gabriel Bateman), is still at home, where he’s losing sleep because he’s afraid to turn out the lights—after he’s seen the frightening, violent figure in the inky corners of his mother’s bedroom. Billy Burke (who plays Mitch Morgan on TV’s Zoo) appears—briefly!—as Rebecca and Morgan’s stepdad. All the pieces of the Lights Out puzzle begin to come together about midway through, when we learn more about the mysterious Diana. I give the movie high marks for story development and making us feel invested in its characters, a rarity in a lot of horror flicks. There’s virtually no blood, almost zero gore, and a fright machine that runs on well-timed gotchas, real-world surprises and supernatural shocks. Some experts think that humans carry an ancient, primal genetic code to be afraid of the dark, a holdover from when
we were much more helpless and defenseless after the sun went down—and predators were on the prowl. This movie certainly plays off that idea, and others, too—including madness, family and the fear of going insane. But one of its most clever ideas is the way its protagonists fight to keep the “lights on” in every way possible, as Diana fights to turn them off. Boyfriend Brit’s resourcefulness,
in particular, had the audience literally cheering in the screening I attended. These days, you can watch movies many ways: on your TV, on your laptop, on your tablet, even on your phone. But for full effect, see this one in the big, open expanse of a dark theater, surrounded by people you don’t know and by things you can’t see…with the lights out!
Coachella Valley Premiere of ‘My King (Mon Roi)’
