here you are—looking at your gift list and dreading shopping for your friend’s birthday, that wedding you’re attending, and the upcoming holidays. The mall and department stores are packed, and some online retailers have a questionable reputation or take forever to ship your items. So, where else can you go to get your shopping done? A boutique, of course! Boutique shopping offers several advantages that you won’t find at most retail or department stores. Listed below are four reasons why you should check out your local boutique.

Save time Boutiques are conveniently sized, so it’s likely you won’t have to spend an eternity finding what you need. Also, you will probably spend less time parking because many boutiques have small, private lots, unlike the seas of asphalt you’re likely to encounter at malls and department stores.

Avoid large crowds Whether you are a people person or not, having to weave through large crowds of shoppers is generally not ideal. Not only do you have to compete with them for hot items, you also have to compete with them for shopping assistance and wait in line at the check-out counter. At a boutique, you can avoid the annoyances of large crowds because the size of the store tends to accommodate fewer people at one time.

JUNE 2016

Enjoy better customer service Without large, demanding crowds around, it’s easier for boutique employees to give you their undivided attention. This means they can better listen to your needs, answer and purchasing questions so you can find exactly what you are looking for. The result is a more relaxing and enjoyable shopping experience for you.

Find unique gifts Sometimes large department stores lack personalized gift options, which may tempt you to purchase generic gifts. However, shopping at clothing and gift boutiques can help you keep your reputation as a thoughtful gift-giver. Boutiques typically order small shipments of one-of-a-kind items that you aren’t likely to see elsewhere. Your loved ones will be flattered by the time and effort you put into finding them the perfect gift. (We just won’t tell them how easy it actually was.)

Happy shopping! So, now that you know some of the benefits of boutique shopping, why not start crossing gifts off your list? Check the internet for weekly deals so you can save some money while you’re at it. Boutique owners are looking forward to seeing you and your friends for some affordable boutique shopping!

any women are cashing in their luxurious jewels and turning them into vacations, education, trendy jewelry or even big figure checks. Caren, who had a small cache of sparkling trinkets hidden away, received these items from loved ones, such as her husband, her parents, or prior relationships. Once she married, she found that she did not wear many of these pieces anymore or that they were not to her taste. She brought in a gorgeous pile of her collection. She asked all the questions I had been asking myself for more than ten years. “What should I do with all these things. I don’t have anywhere to wear them anymore.” My answer was one that confounded her. I told her to melt them and start from scratch. After she realized there was no reason to hold on to them anymore, she did that and designed the piece with me. She was given a pretty substantial check for the stones, too. She wears the new piece daily and enjoys it.

I have found pieces I own that are outdated. The energy of cleaning out the old forces a creative spurt and thrusts me into research about the latest in trends and styles that are much more interesting than a bracelet that has elongated gold leaves and yellowing pearls from 1956. I am not judging, because you may want to hold on to all those items that are collecting dust in bank vaults, hollowed out floorboards, or dark recesses of the closet. Do you remember the last time you wore anything expensive and sparkly here in the desert? I know what you’re thinking. In most cases, you do not lose the value of your esteemed pieces. Sometimes they are worth much more as highly collectable and desirable pieces. It’s free to get a valuation and fun to dream what could become of the things that seemed too heavy, too old or from a prior relationship. Find a jeweler you trust and establish a relationship. With some luck you will be on your way to an exciting destination or showing off your new collection! ooking for a quick and easy way to freshen up your living room? Look no further than your sofa. A change of upholstery, especially a custom design, can change the look and feel of your room without a complex renovation. Today’s sofa styles range from sleek and modern to traditional and timeless with a range of details like tufting and nailheads, shown in ready-to-ship fabrics, or you can pick from an expanded collection of fabric or leather to suit your style and budget. When picking your new sofa and giving it your own personal touch with a range of custom options, keep these design tips in mind: Fabric: How do you decide between a menswear stripe, graphic floral, luxe leather or solid chenille? Gary Babcock, with Arhaus, a home furnishings store, says to look in your closet for guidance. “What color do you wear more? What’s your favorite pattern? Your home is like your wardrobe and you need to look good in it.” Tufting: It’s trending and so much so that entire sofas are tufted. But it does come in various degrees. The deeper the tuft, the more dramatic and glamorous the sofa, while a more subtle tuft with simple button detail is more conservative, contemporary and more suited for the minimalist. Frame: Rather than concealing the frame in the construction process, designers are exposing it, giving the wood timeworn details and a beautiful finish. Adding an architectural element to the piece, an exposed frame brings another level of style to your space. Finish: The finish of the sofa frame, if exposed, and legs comprise another opportunity to showcase your individual style. With retailers, you have your choice of many finishes, ranging from a rich walnut to weathered barnwood. Finale: If an option, don’t overlook the nailhead detail-the finale to your sofa design. Use nailheads to accent a unique feature of the sofa such as a rolled arm or seatback. But be sure to browse the range of sizes and finishes, including old gold, stainless steel, pewter and gunmetal. Home furnishings stores offer a range of sofa styles, as well as complimentary design services to help you create a one-of-a-kind item. For more information and design ideas, visit www.arhaus.com.

ummer is sizzling in the desert. When it’s hot outside, we live indoors. This is a perfect time to freshen up our homes so that we can enjoy our indoor surroundings and let Mother Nature do her thing outside.

Whether you are planning a family barbecue, inviting a small gathering of friends or simply chilling out for the summer, a little effort can make your home sparkle. Updating a home can range from adding a throw rug that changes the personality of a room to giving the walls a new lift with color. Whatever you decide, summertime is a great time to take advantage of steals, deals and bargains. Here are a few tips on how to take advantage of summer savings: Make a list. Write down what you are looking for and prioritize it. Bargain hunting can be overwhelming with sale items everywhere you turn. Making a list will help you stay focused. Do your research. Become knowledgeable on what you are looking to buy. There are many websites that give good ideas on decorating, tips on identifying quality furniture and intel on how to evaluate costs. Know what you want or need. Don’t fall into the trap of buying just because something is on sale. Going overboard on bargain items can lead to a mismatched room or house, making a mess out of the impact and flow of your décor. Pick a theme or specific colors and stick to it when searching for bargains. Come prepared. If you’re looking for pieces for specific places in your home, make sure to take the dimensions and add them to

your list. Remember to bring a tape measure with you so that you can double check if a piece will fit. Stock your vehicle with rope or twine to secure items on the trip home and throw in a few old blankets to protect your buys and your car from damage during transportation. Inspect thoroughly. Sometimes there’s a good reason why an item is a bargain: it’s junk. That may not be obvious at first glance. Make sure that what you’re buying will work. It’s always best to take a close look at a “find” than be sorry later. Shop with intent. Great deals won’t last forever! As the old saying goes: If you snooze, you lose. If you find something you like, chances are someone else probably will like it too. Don’t let someone snatch it from you because you hesitated on your purchase. Keep on searching. When bargain hunting, you never know what you might discover. The key is to be patient when looking for a great deal. You may not find that new piece of furniture on your very first trip. It may take a few tries, but the thrill of purchase is partly in the hunt. Don’t be discouraged, and keep on hunting! The summer is sizzling with sales and our roads are clear of winter visitors. Now is the time to take advantage of great buys and remember to shop local. Your favorite stores will appreciate it during the dog days of summer! etween the high price tags and the technical trade language it’s easy to feel out of your depth, whether you’re buying jewelry for yourself or a loved one. Take our quick tips and make your next trip to the jewelry store a painless one:

Know what you want before going Don’t ever walk into a jewelry store and say you’re “looking for something nice for myself, wife or a friend.” That’s a great way to get ushered immediately to the most expensive items, and even if the salesperson tries to be genuinely helpful you’re still relying on someone else’s taste, which may or may not match the taste and wardrobe of the person you’re buying from. Instead, walk in with a clear idea of the basic characteristics you want, even if you don’t have a set of technical terms in mind. Here are a list of jewelry descriptors you should determine before shopping: Jewelry color: Do you want plain gold or silver colored jewelry? or are you looking for something with a colored stone? If so, what color? This is your most effective triage, since it automatically eliminates a huge chunk of options. Specific metal: Not all silver-tone jewelry is silver, nor is all gold-tone jewelry gold. If you’re set on a specific metal rather than a general color, say so. It helps eliminate a lot of options. Jewelry proportions: Don’t be afraid to use unscientific terms. If you want a slender chain, say so. If you want a big, chunky ring, say that. Give good, descriptive words rather than worrying about technicalities. It’s your job to tell the jeweler what you want; it’s their job to know what matches that description.

12

JUST SHOP

Price: You may not want to mention this up front, but have a limit in your head and stick to it. If you’re offered something above it just say “sorry, that’s more than I was looking to spend” and offer a lower figure. Some jewelers will be willing to haggle over a specific piece’s price, while others will direct you to similar but less-expensive options. You will notice a big difference in going to the jewelers and saying “I’m looking for a moderately-priced gold-colored watch with a narrow band and a plain, modern facing” versus going in and saying “I need a nice watch for work.”

Talk to a jeweler you trust Most jewelry purchases aren’t made on the spot. You can do it that way, but it’s better to talk a specific piece over with a friend. If that friend is someone who knows the ins and outs of the jewelry industry, the better. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a good friend who’s also a professional jeweler, ask around the family. You may be surprised who your relatives know — some older relatives have been dealing with the same family jeweler for decades, and could easily pass on a question or two for you. When you’re asking for a professional’s second opinion, focus on the things they have expertise in: technical questions, details of quality and weight, origins of stones, etc. You’re trying to fill in the gaps in your own knowledge, not just get an opinion on your taste. Of course, you may end up wanting to simply purchase from a jeweler you or a family member knows and trusts, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Just be aware that the best second opinions will always come from people with no vested interest in the sale.

JUNE 2016

Know enough to ask the right questions Whether you’re dealing with a friendly third party or with the jeweler who’s going to make the final sale, you need to know what questions to ask. This is where most people get frustrated or intimidated. Don’t try to grasp it all at once, and don’t try to pretend you know more than the jeweler. Just go in with a solid grasp on the most basic qualities of precious metals and precious gems:

Gold and precious metals Hallmark: This is the manufacturer’s stamp on a precious metal like gold. It should represent either the karat weight or the purity as a percentage. Percentages are given as three-digit decimals, such that a stamp of “.750” would indicate 75% pure gold. Karat weight: A traditional measurement of gold’s purity dating back to before very specific measurements were available. It’s a 1-24 scale, with 24 karats theoretically implying pure gold. In practice, anything higher than .999 pure is rated as 24K.

Diamonds and precious gems Men buying diamonds in particular are urged to consider “The Four Cs” — carat, cut, color, and clarity. Not all of these apply in quite the same way to other precious stones, but they’re useful terms to know: Carat: When it’s spelled with a C instead of a K, you’re no longer talking about precious metal. Instead, a carat is a measurement of mass for precious stones, equal to 0.2 grams. People mostly equate this with size, but that’s not necessarily accurate – a good jeweler can cut a diamond (or stone) to look bigger than a poorly-cut stone of heavier carat weight might. It’s important to know that heavier stones are increasingly rarer, and the price jumps exponentially rather than directly. A three-carat stone will cost far more than double what a 1.5-carat stone might. Similarly, you can get a good price on stones that came in just under a carat weight: a .9-carat diamond will cost substantially less than a 1-carat. Cut: This is the measure of quality, not the shape of the stone. In the U.S. precious stone cuts are rated as Ideal, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor. This scale was only introduced in 2006, and not all diamonds or other precious stones will have a stated rating. Since

JUNE 2016

it’s difficult for an untrained eye to judge, look for a stone with an established rating or have a professional take a look for you. Color: Diamonds specifically are rated on a scale from Z to D, with D being a perfectly clear and colorless diamond. Anything J and up is considered high-quality, and accordingly expensive. Color matters more if you’re buying a big stone. Some cuts will help make a colored or “clouded” diamond look clearer — this is a good question for the jeweler. Clarity: Diamonds and other stones usually contain imperfections. There are ratings based on how they look to the naked eye and under magnification, but you run into a problem here — depending on where in the stone the imperfections are, they might make the gem look more or less flawed. It’s possible to have two stones of the same cut and the same clarity rating that look quite different to the naked eye. This is one reason to only purchase jewels in person, never online based on the written grading.

Find the right place to buy Not all jewelers are created equal. Some have larger selections, some have better prices; some have more helpful and knowledgeable staff. If you’re very lucky you’ll find one that’s good at both, but it can be tough. Know your options: Big Chains: The “shopping mall” jewelers. You may know some: Jared’s, Zales, etc. These focus on the most common types of jewelry: wedding and engagement rings, earrings for women; watches and chains. The staff may not be as knowledgeable as an independent jeweler, and in some cases be aware that you’ll be dealing with a sales clerk rather than a professional jeweler at first. Don’t expect to find anything too out of the ordinary. Family or Independent Jewelers: Something of a dying breed. Expect to find a smaller selection with a more eclectic selection of styles than you would at a big chain store. These can be great places to find unusual, eye-catching pieces, and the jeweler will usually have ample knowledge and expertise. You don’t need to be an expert (though it helps to know one), but you do need to know, roughly, what you want. It’s the only sure way to avoid buying what a salesperson wants you to have instead.

hen it’s done right, shopping can truly be elevated to a form of high art. The Coachella Valley provides the ideal painter’s palette of color and texture for you to personalize with your own brushstrokes of style. As long as you are equipped with a slight sense of adventure, shopping can become a glorious gateway to cultural exploration and design discovery, especially when applied to the desert canvas.

FASHION Stores featuring clothing and shoes flex their fashion muscle at multiple venues ranging from bargain to designer, La Quinta to Palm Springs and traditional to trendy. Designer Trina Turk, a Palm Springs resident, has a high end boutique for men and women (and home décor) in Palm Springs. Who’s Next is a trendy new addition to downtown, with colorful, summer “cotton clothes with stretch.”

Other first-class clothing and shoe mainstays on El Paseo – the “Rodeo Drive” of the desert – include Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Escada, St. John, Kate Spade New York and Coach, complemented by numerous other more moderately priced favorites, like Banana Republic, Eileen Fisher, Brooks Brothers, Talbots and Tommy Bahama (which has a restaurant upstairs when you are ready for a refreshment break).

Stein Mart, with its opening in the Rancho Las Palmas center on the corner of Bob Hope Drive and Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, has helped to revitalize the shopping hub where Von’s used to be. JEWELRY Jewelry stores abound throughout the desert, with most concentrated in and around El Paseo in Palm Desert. One of the most well-known, not only for high quality diamonds harvested in India but also for owner Raju Mehta’s commitment to local charities, El Paseo Jewelers offers spectacular one of a kind pieces. Others nearby include Gail Jewelers, b. Alsohn’s, Ozel, Roberto Coin, Tiffany & Co. and Leeds & Son, which is well known for its Rolex watch selection and in-store events. Price points at these fine jewelers can easily reach five and six figures, however additional selections are available at Westfield Palm Desert stores such as Kay Jewelers and Kevin Jewelers and at Smoke Tree Jewelers in Palm Springs.

GOURMET FOOD AND GROCERY To meet greater demand by residents and visitors alike, gourmet food and grocery stores have sprouted up in multiple locations. Trader Joes, the standard bearer for many years, has maintained a following at both their Palm Desert and Cathedral City locations. Customers looking for organic produce, imported cheeses, elaborate desserts, and fine wines can also shop at Bristol Farms and, more recently, Whole Foods, both in Palm Desert.

Jensen’s Finest Foods in Palm Springs is known for its exceptional meats and wines, and the upscale Gelson’s market has now made its foray into the desert by staking out the corner of Bob Hope Drive and Gerald Ford Drive in Rancho Mirage. Jules Market recently opened in La Quinta to create more of a friendly, neighborhood shopping experience, and Aldi, part of an international chain of “discount gourmet” markets, is now open at Gene Autry and Ramon in Palm Springs as well as in La Quinta. If it’s prime meat, giant apple pies or cases of soda you are looking for, many residents swear by Costco - which requires a simple membership - at the Rancho Mirage/Palm Desert border, just off the I-10 freeway, and in La Quinta off Highway 111. There are numerous traditional grocery stores throughout the area, including Albertson’s, Stater Bros., Ralph’s and its discount counterpart, Food4Less.

ART The art scene can be found primarily at each end of the desert. Indio, which is not only the Valley’s oldest city, established in 1930, and is also best known as host to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival each spring, has come to be identified as a creative center for artistic expression. The Coachella Valley Art Center, owned and curated

And, once again, El Paseo in Palm Desert features popular gallery venues such as CODA Gallery and Hohmann Fine Art, open late at the monthly El Paseo Art Walk. Palm Springs boasts a wide variety of art galleries. The Uptown Design District, a few blocks north of the heart of downtown,

Most people know that Barnes & Noble, the centerpiece of Westfield Mall in Palm Desert, is much more than just a “bookstore.” It’s a complete exploratory experience, with thousands of books covering hundreds of topics, DVDs, audiobooks, textbooks, gift cards, toys and games, over 900 print subscriptions and periodicals and even a Starbuck’s Café.

Other stores, such as Lulu’s Fine Home and Fashion in Old Town La Quinta, Pottery Barn at the Gardens on El Paseo and Erik’s Furniture and Home Goods in Rancho Mirage satisfy a wide variety of decorating needs and interests, especially accommodating warm summer weather and year-round outdoor living. Decorator’s Depot in Rancho Mirage at Highway 111 and Bob Hope Drive is relatively new and offers diverse interior design as well as on site design consultation from concept to finish. Lamps Plus on Highway 111, across from The River at Rancho Mirage, At-HOM Furniture store in Cathedral City and Flooring Innovations, with locations in Palm Desert and Cathedral City, will keep your home well-appointed with complete lighting and flooring solutions. For more heavy-duty home or office related upgrades, and even landscaping projects, Home Depot and Lowe’s have several locations throughout the Coachella Valley.

Products encompassing a wider cross section of athletic activities may be found at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Palm Desert and Big 5 Sporting Goods at several cities throughout the desert.

Since its founding in 1982 in Greensboro, N.C., the chain has grown to 160 stores in 26 states and touts itself as a “general store of yesteryear” atmosphere with produce, meat and seafood, bakery, floral and gifts and other departments. This will be its fourth store in California. A subsidiary of Williams-Sonoma, Inc., the west elm brand has over 65 retail locations around the world. SO.PA at L’Horizon Resort and Spa in Palm Springs has reduced its summer hours. The non-profit’s new store will include 9,000 square feet of retail space. Revenues will benefit disabled Coachella Valley residents and children. other Nature is the ultimate exterior designer, and she shows off her chops every spring and summer when backyards come alive with colorful flowers, birdsong, warm breezes and the lush aroma of newly mown grass. Is your deck, patio or other outdoor entertaining area living up to her standards?

with your furniture in the first place. Don’t just stop with replacing chair cushions, however. Add toss pillows in colors or patterns that compliment your chair cushions, and pile them on your outdoor sofa to create a comfortable, bright seating area.

If your backyard entertaining space could stand some freshening and pops of color, the outdoor living experts at Big Lots point to these eight elements to turn any patio or deck into a paradise worthy of Mother Nature’s brilliance:

When the temperature drops on a spring evening, who wants to head indoors? Adding a firepit to your outdoor living space is a great way to extend your enjoyment of it well into the night. You don’t have to be a pro at building a fire to enjoy a firepit, either. Big Lots offers a gas-fueled firepit nestled inside a stone-topped table that makes starting a fire as easy as turning on the gas and flipping a switch. Arrange four plushly cushioned rockers around your firepit table, and you have the perfect spot for evening chats.

A perfect patio set Patio furniture is the focal point of any outdoor living space. How you use your patio or deck should guide your choice of furnishings. If you’ll be doing a lot of outdoor dining, a table and chairs are essential. Do you envision relaxed evenings chatting with friends in a comfortable setting? Outdoor sofas, love seats, benches and gliders, arranged around a coffee table, can create an intimate area. Shopping for patio furniture doesn’t have to be a challenge; you can find a wide selection of affordable styles, colors, pieces and materials at home stores like Big Lots.

Fabulous firepits

An enlightened atmosphere Speaking of evenings outdoors, lights extend your entertaining hours and create inviting ambiance for patios and decks. Choose a mixture of light sources, such as candle-lit lanterns for a warm glow, solar lights to illuminate travel paths, and string lights that cast gentle light from above.

Colorful cushions and pillows

Smart shade sources

Even the most-loved, highest quality patio set can benefit from replacing old, faded cushions with something new, colorful and exciting. New cushions can completely change the look of your entire outdoor living space, and remind you why you fell in love

Of course, much of your outdoor time will be spent in the sun, so take steps to provide some shade for your patio or deck. A range of versatile shade sources fit virtually every decor theme, and patio or deck size. Have a large, open concrete patio? A ga-

A great grill station Whether you prefer a big, beautiful four-burner 48,000 BTU stainless steel gas grill or a traditional round charcoal kettle grill, a well-planned and efficient grilling station is a must for outdoor entertaining. Be sure to outfit your station with your grill of choice, a rack of accessories like a grilling tool set and grill brush, and a cooler for briefly storing food before it goes on the grill. Big Lots has everything you need to create a great grilling station.

A greener outdoor environment zebo with a canopy and netting can provide shade and keep insects away from guests and food. Want to move the shade with the sun? An offset umbrella with stand can help you put the shade exactly where you need it at any time of day. Traditional umbrellas shelter seating areas, and add bright pops of color to your outdoor decor.

Multiple seating areas In addition to the focal point of your patio or deck, use patio furniture to create separate seating areas for more flexible entertaining. A small cast iron bistro set or bench situated beneath a tree is a great spot for quiet conversations, sipping your favorite beverage or relaxing with a good book. A glider near the patio or deck is sure to be a favorite spot for parent-child chats.

JUNE 2016

If you truly want to celebrate Mother Nature’s creativity, what better way could there be than to decorate your outdoor living space with her handiwork? Arrange flowers and greens in containers in a variety of shapes and sizes throughout your outdoor entertainment area. A small, brightly colored pot of pansies makes a wonderful centerpiece for your patio table. Plant a tall fern or palm in a large, vividly hued pot and use it as a natural division between “rooms” in your outdoor living space. You can find all these must-have elements and more at affordable prices at your local Big Lots. For more information, or to find a store near you, visit www.BigLots.com.

Popular men’s summer shorts

W

hether you’re planning an extended vacation or simply preparing for the summer weather, there are three shorts that every man should have in his collection. With the vast amount of styles available, you can certainly find one that compliments your wardrobe and personal tastees, no matter how eccentric you may be. Below you’ll find three of the most versatile shorts that will ensure you’re prepared for any warm-climate occasion. Swim trunks - With the vast amount of swim trunk styles available from board shorts to Speedos, you can certainly find a pair of this essential item that compliments your style. A decent pair of swim trunks is mandatory wear for a tropical environment, even if you rarely go in the water, as poolside attire doesn’t usually include denim shorts. However, if you do plan on some serious swimming, it would be ideal to avoid the long board shorts as those can get weighty when wet which can make a swim difficult. They also have the tendency to be pulled down when rising out of the water, so a shorter and lighter pair would be a better choice. In order to get the most wear out of your swim trunks, find a neutral color that you can wear with a t-shirt for evening lounging black and/or white trunks can be paired with almost any color. Khaki shorts - Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, you’ll definitely need a nice pair of formal khaki shorts in the event you find yourself needing to look a bit more dressed up. The higher-end restaurants will frown upon you entering with a pair of denim shorts, so always make sure you have more formal occasions covered with a versatile pair. When worn with a coordinated polo shirt, leather belt, and boat shoes or sandals, you can still appear casual and relaxed, yet appear to clean up well when the occasion calls for it. Casual cargo shorts - Finally, you need a casual pair to walk around downtown Palm Springs, Old Town La Quinta, hiking, or just for lounging around at the local pub. Swim trunks usually aren’t very functional as they offer little protection and rarely have secure pockets. Khaki shorts also are rather sparse in the pocket category and are usually starchy with little room for movement. Instead, a nice pair of casual cargo shorts will have plenty of room for hiking or extended walking, breathable for hotter climates, and also offer many pockets to store your cell phone, wallet, keys, and other important items. When selecting a pair of cargo shorts, try to find one that has secure pockets which will help ensure that your valuables do not jump out accidentally. Being able to dress for any occasion on your trip with only three pairs of shorts is a welcomed event. Enjoy traveling light and looking stylish by packing these three essential items.

re you thinking about buying a bike? Start by establishing a budget that includes all the accessories you’ll need: lock, helmet, mirror, rack, shorts and the like. Then, before you go to a specialty store — the ideal place to shop because of the after-sales service — decide what you plan to do with your bike. Short, relaxing outings on Sunday and bicycle touring don’t require the same type of bikes. If you want to tackle hilly trails, you’ll probably want to choose a mountain bike with fat wheels and knobby treads. On the other hand, if you want to cycle to work, choose a stable, sturdy commuter bike that allows you to sit upright and see everything around you. In-store advisors will be able to help you decide which kind of bike you need, whether it’s folding, hybrid, commuter or recreational. Keep in mind that women are more comfortable on models made for women, but that it is possible to modify a men’s bike by changing the handles for smaller ones. It’s also a good idea to find out about the materials used for bike frames. For example, light, strong carbon fiber is ideal for high-performance bikes; however, it is more expensive than aluminum, which is usually used for mid-range bikes. Last but not least, regardless of price, your bike won’t be comfortable if the seat and handlebars aren’t set at the right height for you. So be sure to adjust your new acquisition before setting off for your first outing. Have fun!
