Sun is shining, no cold or oven-temperature winds blowing at present.

Did you see the announcement about Archer fish being able to recognize human faces? I visited a woman who had one - it didn’t like the household black siamese cat and kept spitting at it. In the wild the fish can knock bugs out of the overhanging tree branches for food.

End of an era here. “Itchie” Hansen will be sorely missed by the now grown up kids he coached; the parents of kids that he counseled; his friends here at Joshua Springs and those scattered across the States; and his Alaskan extended fam-

ily. His Marine buddies wish him Semper Fi on his new journey. He’s gone to the great football field in the great beyond and he will be a forever Seattle SeaHawks fan. Richard will be sorely missed. To his immediate family we say he fought a hard battle and we celebrate his busy life with you.

Well I finally made it. Its been a year since Ray passed. As the end of my year of mourning comes to a close I’d like to thank all those who had my back, the laughter with the pool gals, for the kind words I received regarding Ray and the beautiful remembering quilt. I know that he touched so many hearts than mine.

This was a full year, of introspection, fixing repairs that had been put off, of making decisions singly and learning a new way of living. Even when I was working full time, raising children and going to school it wasn’t as hard as this last year. I am looking forward to seeing my way

more clearly now and finding meaningful work for me. Wendy dog appreciated all the extra pets she received, he had been Ray’s caregiver.

For all those now going thru this sad process my heart goes out to you.

Tierra to Perform at Indio Performing Arts Center

In 1911 a lone man named Ishi emerged from near the presentday foothills of Lassen Peak, located in the Shasta Cascade region of Northern California. The last member of his tribe, the Yahi ( a group of Yana of the U.S. State of California). With the help of University of California Berkeley professors he was able to preserve parts of his language and culture.

Take a spin to the tropics with this super summer supper. Simple enough for a weeknight but special enough to serve to guests, these kabobss are a meal you’ll want to make all summer long. They’re also a great way to prepare pork tenderloin. Cut into small pieces, the pork takes just 9 or 10 minutes to cook, and it’s less likely to overcook in such a short time.

Glazed Pork and Pineapple Kabobs • 2 cups pineapple juice • 1/4 cup lime juice (about 2 limes) • 2 tablespoons minced, peeled ginger • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt, divided Freshly ground black pepper • 3 tablespoons hot sauce • 2 tablespoons cumin • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 tablespoon minced garlic • 2 pounds pork tenderloin, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces • 2 cups fresh pineapple chunks

• 1 bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces • 1 small red onion, cut into 1-inch pieces 1. Combine pineapple juice, lime juice and ginger in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture is thickened and reduced to 1 cup, about 20 minutes. Stir in brown sugar, 1/4 tsp salt and pepper and let cool.

2. Preheat grill to medium-high.

Combine hot sauce, cumin, olive oil and garlic in a large bowl. Add pork and toss. Thread pork onto metal skewers, alternating with pineapple, bell pepper and onion.

Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 tsp salt.

3. Grill kabobs until pineapple and vegetables are evenly charred and pork is cooked through, 9 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally.

Transfer to a platter and brush lightly with glaze. Serve with remaining glaze on the side. Serves 8.

Coachella Valley Water District Joins Innovative, New Partnership for Clean Water Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) today announced its participation as a Charter Subscriber of the Partnership for Clean Water, a new voluntary initiative that seeks to help wastewater utilities optimize the operations, performance, and efficiency of their treatment facilities.

“This program will allow the District to better serve its ratepayers by saving money through improving process efficiency in its six wastewater treatment plant operations.”

Participation as a Partnership for Clean Water Charter Subscriber identifies CVWD as part of a select group of utilities that has made the commitment to improve wastewater treatment performance using the program’s rigorous self-assessment and optimization process.

Developed by the American Water Works Association (AWWA), in collaboration with the other industry organizations, the Partnership for Clean Water is a global optimization and recognition program for wastewater utilities. As members of the Partnership for Clean Water, utilities pledge to their communities to continually improve operational efficiency and water quality performance.
