“The Nerd” St. Joseph’s Players in Yucca Valley have picked a wonderful summertime comedy in Larry Shue’s “The Nerd,” running June 25-July 17. The two-acter was the top grossing play in London’s West End in 1986 and starred Rowan Atkinson. It ran on Broadway for 441 performances from 1987-1988, with Mark Hamill starring and Charles Nelson Reilly directing.

Palm Springs International ShortFest announces line-up

N

ow in its 22nd year, Palm Springs International ShortFest will showcase 327 films including 46 World Premieres, 63 North American Premieres and 13 U.S. Premieres. The selection of films for screening and competition features star-studded casts and award-winning films from 54 countries around the world. There are 56 curated programs, which will screen June 21-27, at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs. Celebrate World Giraffe Day at The Living Desert

“We welcome everyone to participate in the day’s activities that highlight these amazing animals.” The Living Desert’s newest giraffe baby, Twiga, born in January, is on exhibit with the zoo’s other six giraffes. For just $4 per member (non-members $5 per person), visitors can get eye-to-eye with the giraffes and enjoy this unique experience of feeding the tallest animals in the world. Giraffe feedings will be offered during World Giraffe Day at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., which also includes a keeper chat.

he Living Desert is commemorating the longest day of the year by celebrating the longestnecked animal during World Giraffe Day, Tuesday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The celebration includes special giraffe keeper chats, arts and crafts, giraffe feedings, a 20 percent discount on giraffe merchandise in the shops and more. Plus, guests who wear giraffe print apparel will receive half price general admission tickets. World Giraffe Day is an initiative of the Giraffe Conservation Fund (GCF) and helps raise awareness and conservation efforts for giraffes as there are less than 80,000 remaining in the wild. The vision of the GCF is that of “a sustainable future where all giraffe populations and subspecies are protected and secure in the wild.” The Living Desert is one of many zoos and organizations throughout the world participating in this special day and what it represents. “We look forward to World Giraffe Day each year as it gives us another opportunity to celebrate our missions of preservation through education and appreciation,” said Peter Siminski, Director of Conservation at The Living Desert.

Giraffe adoptions will be available as part of the Zoo’s adopt-an-animal fundraiser. For $75 (regularly priced at $100), adopters will receive one free giraffe feeding (valid June 21 only), a giraffe stuffed animal, certificate, photo and fact sheet. No ownership rights are conferred by this “adoption.” All animals stay at The Living Desert under the care of the Animal Department staff. Giraffe range in height from 14-feet to over 20-feet tall and can weigh over 2,500 pounds. Their long necks reach almost 7-feet in length. A giraffe’s tongue is almost 20 inches long, and its purple color protects it from the sun’s harsh rays when eating. Sandsational Summer at Spa Resort Casino

pa Resort Casino will display a finished Sandscapes sand sculpture, which will be three days in the making, at Sandsational Summer, an outdoor festival with delicious food, drink, and live entertainment on July 2, at the corner of N. Stonewall Gardens to Host LGBT Pride Event

tonewall Gardens, Palm Springs’ first senior assisted living village for the LGBT community and friends, will host a community Open House on the 47th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising, on Tuesday, June 28, at 2 p.m. Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon will be the event’s featured speaker and will discuss the impact of the rebellion and riots, which took place on June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village. He will also trace the evolution of LGBT rights in the military to the present. In addition, Richard Pass will relay his first-hand experience as he witnessed the rebellion and riots. The melee is widely considered to be the sin-

gle most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States. around the desert Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce selects President and CEO The newly formed Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce (GCVCC) has selected Joshua Bonner as its President and CEO. Bonner held the same position with the Indio Chamber of Commerce prior to the formation of the GCVCC, which merged the cities of Coachella, Indio and La Quinta, as well as the TwentyNine Palms Band of Mission Indians and Cabazon Band of Mission Indians. Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce will create a broader base for partnering and networking opportunities, such as including rotating events and mixers. While merging, existing chamber offices and visitor centers will remain open with a manager for each location. “It’s an honor to be selected to lead the new regional chamber,” said Bonner, a Coachella Valley native. “Our 1,200-plus members took a bold step when they decided to forge the first multi-city regional chamber in our valley, something that had been long discussed. Upper Elevation Hike Friends of the Desert Mountains will be hiking the Gold Hill and Jack Shack 2 on Saturday, June 18 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Interpretive hike is led by Ada Nuckels. Public Screening of “Vigilante Diaries” ‘Vigilante Diaries,’ debuts on on Saturday, June 18 at 7:30pm at the Mary Pickford Theater in Cathedral City in a one night only event hosted by the film’s director, Christian Sesma and producer/ co-star, Mike Hatton. The screening will take place one week before the international release of the film. The event is free to the public, a portion of the concessions will be donated to Variety Children’s Club of the Desert. Following the event, attendees are invited to the after party with the cast at Costas Nightclub at JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. The action comedy features an allstar ensemble cast that includes Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Michael Jai White, Jason Mewes, and Michael Madsen. Several scenes in the film were shot in the Coachella Valley and features local talent, including actress Mara Fimbres, and KMIR’s Gino LaMonte, Thalia Hayden, and David Reese.

1941

GENERAL GEORGE S. PATTON TRAINS TROOPS After the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, the military moved into the desert where the rugged terrain and tourist amenities proved useful to the national defense. U.S. Army Gen. George S. Patton set up a large camp 30 miles east of Indio to train for combat in North Africa. More than one million troops passed through by the war’s end. This impacted the desert because many troop members remained to make their homes here. Today, the George S. Patton Memorial Museum is situated on the site.

1973

PALM DESERT INCORPORATES

W

ith only 1,500 permanent residents, the community of Palm Desert was incorporated on November 26, 1973. At the time, Palm Desert was a master planned community situated in the desert that used to stretch from Palm Springs to Indio. The area was first known as the Old MacDonald Ranch, but the name changed to Palm Village in the 1920s when date palms were planted. Palm Desert once served as a training ground for General George Patton’s Third Army troops and tank battalions. After World War II, Cliff Henderson, a Los Angeles developer, began to develop the desert into his dream community. The first residential development occurred in 1943 in connection with an Army maintenance camp in the area. That site was later developed into “El Paseo,” an upscale shopping district not unlike Rodeo Drive. In 1948, the Palm Desert Corporation began to develop real estate, and, in 1951, the area was given its present name.

The Conjuring 2 more tales of real ghost busters By Neil Pond

eating the much-ballyhooed new Ghostbusters to the screen by several weeks, director James Wan shakes things up with a spookfest of another kind—the second serving of his Conjuring series, based on the case files of real-life paranormal investigators Neil Pond Ed and Lorraine Warren, who claimed to have investigated more than 10,000 incidents since the 1950s. This time, fresh off the 1970s investigation that became New York’s “Amityville Horror,” the Warrens are summoned across the pond to a working-class London borough, where a single mother and her four young children are being tormented by what seem to be malicious spirits. Oh, yeah! Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga once again portray the Warrens, a couple whose individual childhood brushes with the supernatural eventually led them to each other, into a paranormal partnership and marriage. The movie’s soft little subplot about their strong bond, scored to the recurring Elvis hit

Vera Farmiga (left) and Patrick Wilson play real-life ghost-busting couple Ed and Lorraine Warren “Can’t Help Falling in Love” (which Wilson even gets to sing as a serenade, with a guitar!), is a dollop of pure sweetness in the carnival of creepiness. Young Madison Wolfe, 11, who plays Janet, the “possessed” youngest daughter of the British family, may look like a greenhorn, but you’ve likely already seen her if you watch TV, on Zoo, Scream, The Astronaut Wives Club or True Detective, or in the movies The Campaign, Trumbo or Joy. She’s terrific as the bedevilments in her home send her flying into the air, crashing into walls, teleporting from room to room and taking control of her voice, personality and body. Wan, who also directed the original Saw and Insidious, certainly knows his way around a haunted house. He never overdoes the cheap thrills or gotchas, and he gets genuine jolts out of some truly nightmarish images—particularly a demonic nun and the “crooked man”

from the old nursery rhyme. But he also has fun with bone-chilling scares he builds around mundane, everyday objects, like a blinking, bleeping toy fire truck, a bedroom poster of smiling actorsinger David Soul and a TV remote that won’t stay where it’s put. The movie will probably feel a bit familiar, at times, to anyone who’s seen The Exorcist, it could stand to be trimmed by at least 20-25 minutes, and someone should have told the music department that just because a movie is set in England, you don’t have to use songs by the Bee Gees, the Hollies and the Clash if they don’t really fit. As the Warrens wrestle with demons, they also wrangle with questions of belief and doubt, skepticism and proof. “Your visions are a gift from God,” Ed reassures Lorraine, who worries that her trance-like visits to the “dark side” have shown her too much, especially about

what might become her own future. The movie frames the Enfield hauntings, which actually took place over a twoyear period, in a Christmas setting, with prominent decorations on display and weirdly dissonant versions of familiar carols signaling that something unholy is afoot. In one scene, a freaked-out Lorraine stabs and shreds pages of her Bible with an ink pen. If you’re easily spooked, The Conjuring 2 may not be the most relaxing way to spend your popcorn dollar. On the other hand, if you like getting the good, old-fashioned hell scared out of you, then step right up for a retro terror trip to re-live another harrowing, real-life event from the annals of America’s original ghost busters.
