Memorial Day Weekend Block Party in Old Town La Quinta
O
ld Town La Quinta will host their second annual Memorial Day Weekend Main Street Block Party on Saturday, May 28 from 6 to 10 p.m. on the Event Lawn. Admission is free and the event will provide an evening full of local entertainment including stilt walker Too Tall Tomm and live music from local bands The Refills and 212 Band, and a musical performance by the La Quinta High School Jazz Band. Complementing performances on both outdoor stages will be a variety of food and beverage offerings from select Old Town Restaurants, including Café La Rue, Solano’s Bistro, Stuft Pizza Bar & Grill and La Quinta Brewing Company Old Town Tap Room. A portion of the event’s sponsorship proceeds will benefit La Quinta High School’s music program, the Blackhawk Brigade.

emorial Day Weekend marks the official start of the summer season at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Extended holiday hours, late-evening weekend trams and early-morning Friday trams are just a few of the ways the Tramway is helping to extend your mountain adventure. • In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, weekend hours will be extended through Monday, May 30 with the first car up at 8 a.m. each day. • Beginning Friday, May 27 and continuing through Saturday, September 3, evening hours will be extended on Fridays and Saturdays with the last car up at 9 p.m. and the last car down at 10:30 p.m. Enjoy over an extra hour in the Mount San Jacinto State Park and the sparkling nighttime views of the entire Coachella Valley. Also, Peaks Restaurant will remain open until 8:30 p.m. and Pines Café until 9:30 p.m. on those days. • Beginning May 27 and running through September 2 is “Early Fridays.” For those fifteen Fridays, the tram will open two hours early at 8 a.m. According to Tramway Vice President of Sales & Marketing Nancy Nichols, “With the increasing popularity of out-
door activities, our summer hours program gives everyone additional time to both escape the desert heat and enjoy our pristine Alpine forests.” Start the summer above it all at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway! The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the world’s largest rotating tram car. Opened in 1963, the Tram’s 80-passenger cars travel along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon from the Valley Station (elevation 2,643 ft.) to the Mountain Station (elevation 8,516 ft.) in approximately 10 minutes. his year the Palm Springs Air Museum’s Memorial Day Ceremony commemorates the 71st anniversary of the ending of World War Two. After a brief ceremony with color guard and singing of the National Anthem, Tuskegee Airman / B-17 escort Lt. Col. Bob Friend will accept Owen Bayliss Coffman’s Purple Heart on behalf of the Palm Springs Air Museum. A vintage B-25 Bomber will come out of the European Hangar, take off, and after a couple of passes, drop 3,000 carnations from the sky over the Museum’s tarmac behind the museum. The flower drop honors and memorializes all veterans who lost their life defending the US. The white carnations are in honor of those who fought in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The red carnations are in honor of those who died in more recent conflicts including the Persian Gulf, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan. Flight exhibitions throughout the day include the F-86 Sabre Jet (Planes of Fame East), Yak 3, P-51, T-28, P-63 & C-47. There will also be a missing man formation flight exhibition. In advance of the Memorial Day Ceremony and Flower Drop: Flight exhibitions start at 10 a.m. Aircraft scheduled to fly are our C-47, P-51,
our P-63 (one of four in the world that are currently air-worthy) the museums T-28, and a Stearman (PT-17), plus the B-25 dropping the flowers. Visiting aircraft include the F-86 Sabre Jet, Yak 3. There will also be music will be provided by Heatwave Jazz Band. Children’s activities (Harpo the Clown, Knights of Columbus helium balloons). The 82nd Airborne Living History Association (Re-enactors). 26th Annual Grubstakes Days in Yucca Valley

unners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts from throughout the desert area are training for the 26th Annual Grubstakes 10K, 5K and 2K Run to be held in Yucca Valley on Sunday, May 29. The Grubstakes Run is open to experienced and novice athletes of all ages and fitness levels. While the 10K (6.2 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles) runs are timed competitive events, the 2K walk (1.24 miles) is a favorite of those who wish to participate in a healthful but non-competitive event. All of the Grubstakes Run loop courses start and finish at the Yucca Valley High School football stadium, located at 7600 Sage Avenue, and wind through residential areas on the south side of Yucca Val-

‘A Whiteman Sampler’ in Palm Desert By Gary Walker For Desert Entertainer

at Whiteman returns to Palm Desert’s Joslyn Center Sunday afternoon, June 5, when she performs “A W h i t e m a n Sampler” as part of Les Michaels’ Sundays in Summer Cabaret Series.
Whiteman and her pianist/musical director John Boswell will present a program that features songs associated with her numerous performances over the years. Broadway’s Jason Graae directed this cabaret production. Boswell, no stranger to the desert, has performed at the McCallum and Annenberg theaters. Graae is another desert regular and has starred in numerous Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals and is one of Manhattan’s premier cabaret artists.

In most theatre companies, they have a short list of directors they’re familiar with, but Theatre 29 is looking to expand their pool and are requesting those interested to submit their directorial resumes and even plays they would like to direct. The Theatre 29 play selection committee will review all requests and submit its recommendations. The play submission also should include an estimate of the show’s budget. The new season will include six productions, plus a Summer Youth Theatre program. Productions will have a fourweek run and a minimum seven-week rehearsal cycle. All shows will be presented at Theatre 29 on Sullivan Road in Twentynine Palms. Coyote Stageworks Gets an Apple Award The award-winning Coyote Stageworks, our local Actors’ Equity professional theatre company, has received the prestigious Shiny Apple Award from the Palm Springs Unified School District for their dedication in teaching acting classes, donating nearly $5000 in tickets to Coyote Stageworks productions and donating sets to local schools.

PSUSD Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator Louisa Castrodale said, “Coyote Stageworks and its founding members have been incredibly generous to the Unified School District…(and)… have given so much of their time teaching acting classes,” as well as donating the tickets and sets. Yates is a teacher for the PSUSD’s Musical Theatre University, and all three founders have volunteered their time to participate in the after-school program’s annual productions.

Nancy Tapick, President of The Desert Symphony and Mitch Gershenfeld, President and CEO of McCallum Theatre
he McCallum Theatre proudly welcomed Nancy Tapick, President of The Desert Symphony, to its prestigious Avenue of the Stars at a recent ceremony which doubled as a birthday celebration. Tapick was recognized and honored for attaining Distinguished Founder status, which was commemorated with the installation of a star bearing her name. This special star unveiling ceremony was attended by dozens of community leaders, members of the McCallum Theatre Board of Trustees, family, and friends. A number of speakers offered words of praise for Nancy’s true passion for Music and the Arts, including McCallum Theatre’s President and CEO Mitch Gershenfeld, who acknowledged Nancy for being “such a wonderful friend to The McCallum Theatre, to the Arts in the Valley, and quite simply, for being a true community treasure.” Tapick’s interest in Music and the Arts goes back to her childhood, due to her Mother’s Father introducing her and her sister to music at an early age. Nancy today attributes her passion and love of Music and the Arts to him, who always encouraged she and her sister to learn all the new songs.
As Nancy explains it “Sundays were reserved for “Our Show,” and my sister and I would learn all the new songs from the Dick Clark American Bandstand songbook. We would sing and dance our hearts out, having been enrolled in all kinds of lessons, including piano, ballet, tap, and jazz. Many people say that I am the only person they know that answers questions with a line from a song and I sing it . . .while others think I know every lyric to every song. I don’t think I do, but maybe they are right!” In 2002, through her cousin Frankie Randall, Nancy met Marilyn and Mastro Ben Benachowski, Co-Founders of The Desert Symphony. She and her husband, Israel Tapick, became fast friends and supporters of The Desert Symphony. Nancy was asked to join the Board of the Desert Symphony . . . and the rest is history. “I love what I am doing. I am grateful to have the opportunity to give back to this community. PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT OPENS
P
alm Springs International Airport, then known as Palm Springs Municipal Airport, opens on land that was purchased in 1961 by the city of Palm Springs from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The site previously served, from 1939 to 1945, as a United States Army Air Forces airfield. The airport covers 940 acres and has two runways. Eleven airlines now serve the area through the airport. Some of the airlines are seasonal, in that some flights do not operate during the summer. On December 30, 2006, Air Force One left Palm Springs International Airport with the body of the 38th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford. His body was flown to Washington, D.C., for official funeral services. Air Force One has been seen in 2013 and 2014 as President Barack Obama makes three visits to the Coachella Valley.

he home at 1350 Ladera Circle was designed in 1962 by architects Dan Palmer and William Krisel for builder Robert Alexander and his wife, Helene. Look magazine described the home as “The House of Tomorrow” in an eight-page spread detailing the social life of the Alexanders and their estate. Tragically, they were killed soon after in a plane crash. Elvis Presley’s manager, Tom Parker, suggested Elvis rent a place in Palm Springs where he could relax and escape Hollywood. Elvis rented the “House of Tomorrow” for one year, and, after marrying Priscilla Beaulieu, used the house as a “Honeymoon Hideaway.”

The PGA TOUR, Desert Classic Charities and CareerBuilder announced today that World Golf Hall of Fame member Phil Mickelson will serve as an official ambassador of the CareerBuilder Challenge beginning in 2017. In this capacity, Mickelson will promote the tournament and participate in various functions during tournament week. “I’m very excited to undertake the role of tournament ambassador and look forward to doing what I can to help with the continued growth of the CareerBuilder Challenge,” Mickelson said. “Our family loves the area and we have a home in Coachella Valley, so this is a natural fit for me.” In addition to Mickelson’s new role, it was announced that the Clinton Foundation, which has partnered with the tournament for the past five years, will end its official role with the tournament. The Foundation and the Clinton Health Matters Initiative, however, remain committed to continuing their work in the Coachella Valley to improve the health and wellness of the nearly 400,000 local residents, and the Health Matters Annual Activation Summit will continue in a new location next year. Living Desert’s Black Vultures Fostered Denver Zoo Egg
The Living Desert Zoo and Garden’s longtime resident pair of Eurasian Black Vultures, also known as Cinereous Vultures, have successfully fostered and incubated an egg from the Denver Zoo. Affectionately known as John Denver, the chick hatched on Friday, May 6, to caring foster parents, Vicky and Vinnie. This is the first time Vicky and Vinnie have fostered an egg and raised a chick to adulthood. The chick will stay with the pair for at least 6 months. Vicky, Vinnie and the chick are currently on exhibit at The Living Desert, and guests can catch a glimpse of the new family.

Friends of the Desert Mountains Upper Elevation Hike

riends of the Desert Mountains will be hiking the Cedar Springs Trail on Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interpretive Hike led by Ada Nuckels. Hike begins off Morris Ranch Road with a walk through a meadow. Soon you begin the climb to the Pacific Crest Trail intersection and down the recently re-opened Cedar Springs Trail. At the intersection you have a fantastic view of the Coachella Valley and the Little San Bernardino Mountains. Learn about the recent disastrous effects of forest fires to our area and the restoration of wilderness habitat. Hike rating is moderately strenuous at eight miles round trip with an elevation gain of 750 feet.
From Palm Desert take Highway 74 to Garner Valley approximately 28 miles. Turn right onto Morris Ranch Road for four miles. Parking will be along the side of the road on the right. The Nice Guys
Crowe and Gosling mix action and laughs By Neil Pond
T
he opening shot of The Nice Guys pans across the back of the iconic Hollywood sign, grimy and tagged with graffiti, as the lights of the city below glitter in the night like a gigantic box of jewels.
After the Temptations set a ’70s Neil Pond groove to “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” we’re off and rolling ourselves on a raucous, retro-rollicking comedy-adventure romp as a pair of mismatched investigators-for-hire (Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling) team up to look for a missing girl (Margaret Qualley of TV’s The Leftovers). But soon they find themselves in a much deeper drama involving porn stars, pinkie promises, menacing thugs, Kim Basinger in full L.A. Confidential mode and a shocking conspiracy of catalytic converters and high-ranking collusion. Writer-director Shane Black made his mark back in the late 1980s with the screenplay for Lethal Weapon, starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. He went on to refine his format—a high-octane mix of cheeky quips and pulpy, explosive action—behind the camera with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) and Iron Man 3 (2013).

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in ‘The Nice Guys’ The movie takes place in 1977, and it revels in the details of its smoggy, sometimes smutty setting. The background hums with tunes from Kiss, America, Rupert Holmes, the Band, Herb Alpert and Earth, Wind and Fire. Chevy Camaros, Caprice Classics and Dodge Coronets line up for 69-cent-a-gallon gas. Billboards trumpet the hottest movies: Jaws 2, Airport 77. Newspaper headlines spread the dread about killer bees from Brazil. You’ll recognize versatile character actor Keith David as a villain. Matt Bomer from TV’s American Horror Story plays John Boy, an assassin sharing a certain facial feature with the Waltons TV character of the same name. And young Angourie Rice, 14 at the time of filming, almost steals the show as Holly, the daughter of Gosling’s character. She’s the soft heart of this rough-and-tumble story, the tender conscience in the midst of its outbursts of casual violence. But the real treat throughout is the pair-up of two actors not known for baring their funny bones. Crowe’s Jackson Healey is a rumpled, jaded tough guy who leads with his fists—often sporting brass knuckles. Gosling plays Holland
March as a mopey, bottom-feeding P.I. with a drinking problem and a tattoo that reminds him, “You will never be happy.” Their oil-and-water styles initially clash, of course, but eventually smooth into some major movie mojo. (Pay attention and you’ll even catch their nod to classic Abbott and Costello.) It all builds into a spectacular shootout showdown at a gleaming auto expo, where everyone is scrambling to get their
hands on a canister containing a reel of film as it rolls, bounces and spins across the floor, out a window, down a street and into the flames of a burning car. That’s one hot movie, as it turns out, in more ways than one. And so is The Nice Guys, a juicy, slambang action-comedy cocktail punched up, pimped out and powered down with rowdy, new-fangled film-noir fun. Hot stuff—catch it.
