he City of Indio, in conjunction with the Indio Chamber of Commerce and the Indio Visitors Bureau, will present the Third Annual Discover Indio Block Party on Saturday, May 21 in Downtown/Old Town Indio from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free community event will include live music, food vendors, a beer garden, a classic car show, art installations, a self-guided mural tour, a kids’ zone and roaming entertainers.

“The Discover Indio Block Party is a great way for the community to come out and celebrate our shared heritage and culture,” said Joshua Bonner, Indio Chamber of Commerce President/CEO. “Thanks to the generosity of our terrific sponsors, we’re looking forward to presenting this fun, festive event for the third year. We expect it to be the most enjoyable and successful yet.”

The block party will be held on Miles Avenue, Smurr Street and Towne Street.

Parking will be available at City Hall and adjacent parking lots and streets. Musical performers on the Outdoor Stage include Alchemy, Avenida, Brightner, Giselle Woo, Pale Palace, R Buckle Road, The Flusters and Thoughts Contained. The Coachella Valley Arts Center will host an exhibition of works by CVAC residents and affiliated artists.

ncorking a three-day weekend of the finest sights, sounds and tastes the 33rd Annual Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival, May 20-22 with top rock, alternative rock, and country bands in concert, a spectrum of iridescent colorful hot air balloons during dawn launches and evening balloon glows, and tasty sensations.

The wine garden stage features local bands that competed on I-Heart Radio’s Local Rising Stars contest for a spot at the Festival, and other regional acts. Los Angeles Dance Party DJs Pasho and Orion create the party atmosphere after Friday and Saturday night’s balloon glows. Sunday in the wine gardens features a tribute to The Eagles by the band Hotel California.

Held at Lake Skinner Recreational Area, the Festival highlights Southern California’s fine wine region with wine tasting, food and wine pairings with gourmet cuisine.: local growing microbrew industry offers microbrew and craft brews, while food and beer pairings teach guests to cook with beer as an ingredient.

Cosmic cosplay spices up the Friday evening balloon glow. A 30-minute show, these hot air balloons glow to the musical beats of Star Wars, Star Trek and beyond. This is an interactive event where the crowd cheers and pleas for the “glow” while balloons appear to dance to the beat. Cosplay characters will be dressed in everything from Storm Troopers to Klingons, and Ewoks to Aliens. Los Angeles Dj Pasha packs high energy into the dance party after the glow.

Wine tasting at the festival is one of the best ways to discover a new winery for your collection. With 15 wineries from which to choose. All wineries pour a red and white wine. Some will have more choices. Others may only pour one wine.

If you prefer reserve wines and winemaker’s specials, upgrade your wine tasting experience with a Reserve Wine Tasting package. This also includes eight tastes and are served in a larger bowled souvenir wine glass.

Main stage concerts at the festival include Phil Vassar and Parmalee on Friday night, Jimmy Eat World, Neon Trees and Chalk Farm on Saturday and Rodney Atkins and Kristian Bush on Sunday.

Open Mic Fundraiser in Palm Desert

he Palm Desert Youth Committee invites the public to celebrate creativity and spontaneity while supporting two worthy causes at an Open Mic fundraiser on Sunday, May 22, from 2 to 5 p.m., at Westfield Palm Desert.

Held at MAKE, the Coachella Valley Art Scene’s hip new studio at the mall, 72-840 Highway 111, the fundraiser will give attendees a chance to enjoy live music, spoken word poetry, and other creative content that participants choose to share via the open microphone. Doors will open at 2 p.m., with two open mic

sessions from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Reserved seating is available for a suggested donation of $5 per seat. Attendees will also have a chance to participate in a raffle as well as an auction of artwork from local artists and gift certificates to local businesses.

IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas

at Agua Caliente Cultural Museum

A

gua Caliente Cultural Museum presents the Smithsonian traveling exhibition IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas. This exhibition focuses on the seldom-viewed history and complex lives of people of dual African American and Native American ancestry. Through the themes of policy, community, creative resistance and lifestyles, the exhibition tells stories of cultural integration and diffusion as well as the struggle to define and preserve identity. IndiVisible, produced by the National Museum of the American Indian in collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), remains on view through November 1, and will then continue to travel to museums around the nation.

Since the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas, the lives of Native and African peoples have been closely intertwined. From pre-colonial times, they intermarried, established communities and shared their lives and traditions. But racially motivated laws oppressed and excluded them. Blended tribes worked to preserve their land and rebelled against displacement. Their survival strategies included involvement in social movements, joining together to fight oppressive conditions and regaining economic sustainability.

Their unique African-Native American cultural practices through food, language, writing, music, dance and the visual arts have thrived.

African-Native Americans from across North America share their perspectives in a 10-minute video in the exhibition.

The accompanying exhibition book, IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas, features 27 essays from authors across the hemisphere sharing first-person accounts of struggle, adaptation, and survival and examines such diverse subjects as contemporary art, the Cherokee Freedmen issue, and the evolution of jazz and blues. The illustrated 256-page book is available online, and is available for purchase at Agua Caliente Cultural Museum.

‘Jewish Women Doing Jewish Men’ at Arthur Newman Theatre

O

ne of the desert’s favorite pianists, Joel Baker, joins Amy Brothman at the Joslyn Center Sunday afternoon, May 29, when she presents “Jewish Women Doing Jewish Men,” her latest cabaret concert.

As part of Les Michaels’ Sundays in Summer Cabaret Series, Brothman’s program explores some of our music from the Broadway stages by Jewish composers and lyricists, such as Irving Berlin, Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz, Julie Styne, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. with entertaining acts and stories about them.

Brothman is originally from Buffalo, N.Y., and started performing in musicals by the age of seven. After completing her studies in Musical Theatre, she moved to NYC where she landed her first professional role, that of Sheila in the Anniversary Tour of “Hair.”

Since moving to L.A. to raise her son, she has created her cabaret persona and added producing to her CV. McCallum’s Summer Festival

The McCallum Theatre Institute has announced its Summer Festival lineup of performances “that feed the soul and awaken the imagination” of students seven and up. Adults welcome: • June 13: “The World Itself and Myth and Infrastructure,” featuring multi-media artist Miwa Matreyek. Using animation, projections and her own moving shadow, Matreyek performs a gorgeous and meditative piece about inner and outer discovery.

• June 15: The Okee Dokee Brothers featuring Carlos Medina. Justin Lansing and Joe Mailander (the brothers) are an American bluegrass and American roots children’s music duo who have won a Grammy and written a children’s book.

In 2013, they embarked on a monthlong trek along the Appalachian trail, meeting local musicians, hearing their stories and soaking up the culture from which came second CD/DVD in the Adventure Series.

• June 17: “Walking the Tightrope,” 24th St. Theatre. Written by one of England’s leading writers for young audiences, Mike Kenny, “Walking the Tightrope” is a sweet and funny story of a grandfather who, while trying to tell his five-year-old granddaughter that Grandma is gone, goes about building a beautiful new relationship with her.

With the help of a single clown, they discover the meaning of family. The production uses sophisticated video, sound design and original music to transport audiences from Granddad’s quaint 1959 English seaside cottage to the spectacular circus big top. The Festival Pass is $35

My Recommendations With the announcement of McCallum Theatre’s 2016-2017 season, other critic/ reviewers (and even the McCallum’s head man) are giving their recommendations for special considerations. • Sunday, March 12, 2017: John Cleese in two performances. He is a living comedic legend and a brilliant raconteur. He will explain how he became a celebrity “despite some talent.” Typical British understatement.

The Dustbowl Revival

at Palm Desert’s free Spring concert series

njoy exciting performances under the stars while savoring treats from a selection of food trucks at Palm Desert’s Civic Center Park Amphitheater from 7:30 to 9 p.m. every Thursday in May, continuing May 19 with classic American music from The Dustbowl Revival.

An American roots orchestra with eight members, the band plays a mix of bluegrass, swing, hot jazz, pre-war blues, Southern soul, and New Orleans funk.

The band describes its music as a celebration of the sounds that have kept America moving for more than a century, performed with the flair of a medicine show.

ecent desert transplant, Sharon Sills, has already taken the valley by storm at various venues throughout the valley. But on Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m., she will “Sharon Sing Them All” at the Arthur Newman Theater for the Sundays In Summer Cabaret Series. The show will feature some of Sharon’s most requested songs with pianist, Paul Eshelman in concert.

Sharon started out as a singer in Las Vegas but opened a boutique woman’s wear store because she just loves clothes; this led to opening six more between there and Orange County. A frequent visitor to Palm Springs with husband, ‘RJ’, she

began getting up to sing at clubs, piano bars, and open mics, and before she knew it the job offers followed. She’s was a weekly performer at Woody’s before moving to the Purple Room where she appears on Thursday nights. Her repertoire is as vast as the array of her fans, everything from the last seven decades, and from Pop, Rock, Country, and Broadway.

Her voice easily handles a soft ballad to the biggest belter.

Her performance on Sunday, May 22 will feature a little bit of everything and will be her theater debut in the desert, something she has been looking forward to saying, “Working in clubs is a more

party vibe, this show will be more about the songs, the lyrics and my voice, but still show my fun-side”.

pays tribute to co-founder

iner Family Winery announces the release of Emily’s Cuvee, an eponymous wine made in remembrance of Emily Miner, co-founder of Miner Family Winery who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2011.

As a tribute to Emily Miner and to continue the fight against cancer, Miner Family will be donating 10 percent of sales of Emily’s Cuvee to The V Foundation for Cancer Research. The foundation was formed by ESPN and Jim Valvano in 1993, and aims to find faster solutions and better answers to fight cancer. Since its founding, the V Foundation has awarded more than $150 million in cancer research grants nationwide.

Lung cancer alone kills more Americans every year than the next three most common cancers combined, according to the American Cancer Society. And one in five women who contract it will be nonsmokers.

“Emily’s diagnosis of lung cancer in 2008 was a big blow to our family and community as she had never in her life smoked cigarettes,” said Dave Miner, Owner of Miner Family Winery and Emily’s husband. “She fought her four-year battle with dedication and conviction and was the honoree at the V Foundation Wine Celebration in 2009, when more than $1 million was raised for lung cancer in her name. I know she’d be proud to see that we are continuing to fight this deadly disease.”

PLAZA THEATRE OPENS ITS DOORS

T

he historic Plaza Theatre opened its doors for the first time on December 12 for the world premiere of the motion picture “Camille.” Theater owner/manager Earle Strebe was deter¬mined to bring audiences only the finest film entertainment available and the Plaza Theatre soon established itself as an outstanding movie house. Not only were films shown there but other entertainments as well. Bob Hope and Jack Benny broadcast many of their national radio shows from the Plaza Theatre, and the theatre was home to live performances by such stars as Donald O’Connor, Frank Sinatra, Gordon Mac¬Rae and others. But with the passage of time, the theatre finally closed in 1987. In 1991, retired television producer Riff Markowitz came up with an idea for its utilization. He conceived and created the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies, which ended its run in 2014 after 23 years.

ucille Ball and Desi Arnaz helped finance construction of the Indian Wells Country Club. Founded in 1956, with their winter residence on famous DesiLu Court, Indian Wells became a major factor in “down valley” growth in the 1970s and 1980s. A mostly gated community, Indian Wells has one of the highest per capita income of any small town in the United States. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were also instrumental in forming the exclusive Thunderbird Heights tract in Rancho Mirage, later the home of President Gerald Ford and his wife, Betty.

oth Black Bears and Grizzlies will take center stage as Big Bear Alpine Zoo joins other zoos and animal sanctuaries around the country in celebrating the final day of Bear Awareness Week. Green Room

backwoods gig becomes bloody living nightmare In his debut mainstream theatrical feature, director Jeremy Saulnier, 36, shows an incredible amount of promise. He takes his time setting up the story and establishing the characters, patiently drawing the audience into the subculture of their musical world and their low-rent camaraderie—a slog of constant touring to crappy gigs in their old van, living on food scraps, siphoning stolen gas and playing loud, anarchic songs to indifferent or sometimes hostile listeners.

Saulnier gets the details just right: life on the road, the band’s dedication to their music, their banter and their interactions—and how actual people might react, think and speak when they find themselves in the middle of a situation that suddenly, unexpectedly becomes gruesome and deadly. As another band rumbles through their songs onstage, the dark, ominous tones reverberate through the walls of the club, into the bowels of the green room, like the howls of a great, angry beast.

n show business, a “green room” is the spot backstage where performers go to relax, hang out and kick back before or after a show. It’s usually a secluded place of high spirits and hospitality.

But not in this wickedly sharp thriller-chiller horNeil Pond ror show about a band of young punk rockers whose gig turns into a ghastly fight for their lives. Barricaded in the club’s grungy green room, they square off against the owner and his army of neo-Nazis when a shocking episode of violence becomes a raging nightmare.

Anton Yelchin (Chekov in the Star Trek movies), Alia Shawkat (from TV’s Arrested Development), Callum Turner and Joe Cole play the members of the Ain’t Rights, whose unlikely booking at a backwoods roadhouse full of white supremacists turns into a bloody standoff when they stumble onto the aftermath of a “crime of passion” and can’t get away before the owner (Patrick Stewart) tries to frame them for it—and eliminate them along with all the evidence.

British actress Imogen Poots has a key role as a club patron who inadvertently becomes part of the mayhem as the young rockers—who play music steeped in destruction, doom and death—find out how they fare when suddenly faced with the real thing.

But the real treat is watching the classically trained Stewart, best known as Star Trek’s wise Capt. Picard and as Professor Xavier, the benevolent leader of the XMen, in a role that stretches him so far in the other direction. In Green Room, he’s one seriously scary dude mixing evil and eloquence, refinement and malevolence, and hell-bent on maintaining order anywhere things get messy. His harrowing performance gives this raw, edgy, awesomely impressive, little hardhitting punk-rock movie even more of a visceral kick.

The movie has the gritty, grubby feel of a film-festival, midnight-madness indie, especially when it gets down to the bloody business of slashing, hacking, shooting, stabbing, ripping and tearing.

Who will escape, who will survive? It’s not for the queasy or the faint of heart, but Saulnier makes inventive use of his set and props, including the squeal of PA feedback as a weapon, a fire extinguisher
