heatrical choices are entering the new “lean” season, so Francesca Amari’s appearance in Les Michaels’ Sundays in Summer Cabaret Series at Palm Desert’s Joslyn Center Sunday afternoon, May 15, is special treat.

Amari says her new show, “It’s Hip to Be Square: Guilty Pleasure Songs,” will feature “all those songs you love – but hate to admit it.” Her pianist is Wayne Abravanel, who will have his own cabaret show, “My Life on Broadway,” Sunday, June 19.

Amari moved to Palm Springs in 2010 and has appeared in many local venues and musical shows, such as Palm Canyon Theatre’s “Anything Goes.”

Her new show “is full of songs that have flooded the airwaves over the years…with lyrics and melodies that you can’t help but sing along with – so be ready.”

Thanks, Michael Michael Hammond, Ph.D., has provided this community with 17 years of service as Executive Director of the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum and is now retiring to spend more time with his family.

I’ve worked with Michael most of those years, especially when it comes to the popular and internationally successful Native FilmFest for the past 15 years and, of course, covering many of the Museum’s entertainment and cultural events, such a Dinner in the Canyon, Bird Singing and Storytelling in my Desert Entertainer column and on my Desert Entertainment This Week TV show with host Don Martin.

Under his watch, the Museum was the first Native American museum to be part of the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program. The exhibition “Cahuilla Cowboys – Making Our Masks” received the Charles Redd Award for “best exhibition west of the Rockies.”

More recently, the exhibition “Section 14 – The Other Palm Springs” was selected to be shown at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., in 2018 – the first community tribal museum to be so honored.

The Museum’s Chairwoman Mildred Browne said recently: “He’s been at the front and taken us to the right position and the right place.”

He’s always been a gracious and generous community leader with his time, insights and commitment to local native interests, both internally and externally.

As with many indigenous languages, words can have multiple meanings, depending on the situation, In Cherokee, for instance, “Osiyo” generally means “hello.” But my mother preferred this meaning: “Osiyo – All’s well, don’t worry, relax and enjoy.”

Rita Hayworth in “Gilda” with an eclectic lineup of noir classics, restoration premieres, rare films and guest stars.

Alan K. Rode returns as producer/curator for his ninth year at the helm and notes that this is “the year of the femme fatales, highlighted by Joan Crawford (“Sudden Fear”), Rita Hayworth (“Gilda”) and Marilyn Monroe (“Niagara”).

But this kind of film was buttressed by the strength of its character actors (Harry Morgan, John Hoyt, Lloyd Gough and Joseph Pevney).

The special guests this year are Claude Jarman Jr., James Curtis and the return of Ann Robinson.

oachella is over and Stagecoach will be moving on soon, but live music lovers can still enjoy outdoor music and food truck cuisine throughout the month of May thanks to the return of Palm Desert’s Spring Concerts in the Park.

Enjoy exciting performances under the stars while savoring treats from a selection of food trucks at the Civic Center Park Amphitheater from 7:30 to 9 p.m. every Thursday in May, beginning May 5 with New Wave 80s favorites performed

by The Reflexx. The Orange Countybased band plays hits from bands such as The Cure, Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, and more.

ichael Hammond, Ph.D., Executive Director of Agua Caliente Cultural Museum for the past 17 years, announced his retirement effective July 31. He has agreed to remain on a month-to-month basis if a successor has not been found by the end of July.

“I’ve accomplished everything I set out to do when I was hired, except build a new Agua Caliente Cultural Museum,” said Hammond. “I am retiring partly for reasons of health and partly because of age, having recently turned 74. If Tribal Council were to say tomorrow, ‘Yes, we’re going to go ahead with the project,’ we’re still looking at redesign considerations, upgrading systems, and construction. I don’t

think I want to be doing this in my 80s.”

Hammond looks forward to spending time writing, traveling, gardening, and enjoying more time at home with his family.

Under his watch, the Museum was the first Native American museum to be part of the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program. The exhibition Cahuilla Cowboys – Making Our Marks, received the Charles Redd Award for “best exhibition west of the Rockies.” More recently, the exhibition Section 14 – The Other Palm Springs was selected to be shown at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC in 2018 – the first community tribal museum to be so honored. founded and directed Native FilmFest for 15 seasons, firmly establishing the event as one the most highly regarded festivals of its kind – showcasing the best in films by, about, and starring Native Americans and other Indigenous peoples.

“He’s been at the front and taken us to the right position and the right place,” commented Chairwoman Mildred L. Browne. “This has become just as much his museum as it is our museum.

rian Culbertson plus Mindi Abair and The Boneshakers have just been announced as the talent lineup for the 2016 Desert Lexus Jazz Festival presented by the City of Indian Wells, a premier concert event in the Coachella Valley for the past 17 years will be held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Saturday, May 7. Abair, a twotime Grammy-nominated saxophonist, and The Boneshakers will open the evening at 7 p.m. followed by Brian Culbertson at 8:30 p.m.

Brian Culbertson grew up near Chicago, Illinois, loving genre-crossing jazz-pop artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Chicago, and Tower of Power. In 1994, Brian self-produced his debut album, Long

Night Out, and 15 albums later he still continues to be a leading voice in contemporary jazz, funk and R&B. Culbertson has been in the studio writing songs for a new funk record, due out this September.

Mother’s Day

all-star cast sinks in sentimental sap his Indian son-in-law (Aasif Mandvi) as a “towelhead,” or when grandma (Margo Martindale) sizes up a situation by asking herself, “I put on a bra for this?”

The large, talented cast is largely wasted with little to do but go with the flow of the overly sweetened, sentimental twists and turns, the not-so-surprising surprises and the eventual resolutions and wrapups. But the sap eventually sucks all of them under.

other’s Day the holiday is all about moms, and so is Mother’s Day the movie, which has them of every shape, style, size, temperament and hue.

And life sure looks beautiful, bountiful, wacky and whimsical when it’s played out against a picture-perfect backdrop of suburban affluence by Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson, Timothy Olyphant, Jason Sudeikis, Shay Mitchell (from TV’s Pretty Little Liars), Britt Robertson, Jennifer Garner, Jon Lovitz and comedian Loni Love.

This is the third holiday-themed ensemble comedy from Garry Marshall, the veteran TV writer/producer (Happy Days,

The Odd Couple, Mork and Mindy) and movie director (Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride) who also previously brought us Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve. In both of those films, as in this one, an allstar cast of unrelated characters manages to somehow intersect with each other, as improbable as it might seem.

Coincidence is one thing, but here, worlds collide like particles in some kind of bizarre cinematic quantum theory, where strands not only cross and over-

lap, they magically weave into a crazy Mother’s Day movie smock of American flags, a careening RV, a Tao-dispensing clown, soccer, Skype, llamas, teenagers, toddlers, babies, a cute guy in a comedy club, Aniston with her arm stuck in a vending machine and Sudeikis singing “The Humpty Dance.”

And Hector Elizondo, an actor you should recognize if only because he’s been in every movie Garry Marshall has ever made, all the way back to 1982.

I’d love to see what Garry and Hector— and who knows who else—could do with Election Day. Now that could really be fun.

Marshall is a maestro of this kind of comedic mixology, plied and played over the decades. But it seems to have run out of a lot of its steam, at least for contemporary times. Most of his movie gags feel like they’re waiting for a sitcom’s laugh track to back them up, and his bawdy, brusque, broad brushstrokes of humor aren’t what anyone would exactly call enlightened.

“I don’t get that joke, but I think it sounds racist,” says one character when another makes a crack about her ethnicity.

Young boys shock their mom (Aniston) by talking about their genitals; a teenage girl embarrasses her widower dad (Sudeikis) by asking him to buy tampons; a lesbian couple (Sarah Chalke and Cameron Esposito) makes a pink “womb” float for a Mother’s Day event—which another character refers to as a “parade of vaginas.”
