tagecoach 2016 - set for Friday, April 29, Saturday April 30, and Sunday, May 1 - marks the festival’s tenth year at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. This year, Eric Church, Carrie Underwoor and Luke Bryan will headline the three-day country music festival with additional performances by Chris Young, Sam Hunt, Emmylou Harris, Eric Pasley, Marty Stuart, The Band Perry, Joe
Nichols, John Fogerty, Chris Stapleton, Little Big Town, Dustin Lynch, The Doobie Brothers, Lee Ann Womack, Rodney Crowell, RaeLynn, Old Dominion, A Thousand Horses and many more. Stagecoach Festival Carpool Convoy is back! The program gives festival-goers a fun chance to be rewarded for showing off their Stagecoach pride while car-
pooling. Participate by decorating your vehicle (car or RV) with the words Stagecoach Festival Carpool Convoy or Stagecoach Carpool Convoy. Get creative and make it easy to be spotted. Arrive at the festival anytime over the three-days before 3 p.m. on Sunday. During Thursday-Sunday, at random times a secret spotters will be scouting the parking or camping entrances, winners will be selected at random. Winners with four or more to a vehicle will win corral passes, $40 Stagecoach merchandise vouchers, $20 food vouchers and ferris wheel rides, artist meet and greet passes and RV resort wristbands. Desert Night Sky: Planets to Galaxies at Joshua Tree National Park

arm May nights are a perfect time to experience the newly emerging spring night sky. The brilliant stars of winter have sunk beneath the horizon and spring galaxies swirl high in the heavens. On Saturday, May 7, from 2 to 10 p.m. David Chappell, Associate Professor of Astronomy and Physics at the University of La Verne, will lead participants on a tour of the heavens starting with the planets and ending with distant galaxies during this one-day field class. Starting indoors, the course will cover basic astronomy and practical observing techniques as well as recent discover-
ies in astronomy. Just before sunset, the class will travel into Joshua Tree National Park to observe the night sky. Telescopes and binoculars will be used to see the rings of Saturn, the Great Orion Nebula, craters on the Moon, dozens of galaxies, and more. oachella Valley youth in collaboration with Build Healthy Communities Coachella Valley produce the fifth annual Hue Music & Arts Festival taking place April 30 from 12:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Mecca Community Park. Crafted by design for the local community, The HUE is a free event showcasing a eclectic mix of Coachella Valley artists playing many genres of music with a line-up that includes Electric Lucie, CISR, Venus & the Traps, Jesus Galaviz, Night at the Park, DJ Cyborg, and Kill The Radio

‘Amadeus’
at Palm Canyon Theatre By Gary Walker For Desert Entertainer
T
his is the last weekend to catch the colorful “Amadeus” by Peter Shaffer at Palm Canyon Theatre in Palm Springs.
In 1981, it won the Tony for Best Play, and Shaffer adapted it into the 1984 Oscarwinning Best Film. Whereas both the original stage play and the film are exaggerated looks at Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, one of major differences was the use of much of Mozart’s music in the original. First performed in 1979, the play was adapted from Alexander Pushkin’s short play “Mozart and Salieri.” Shaffer’s brilliant take on the relationship between child prodigy Mozart and his jealous senior Salieri was to tell it from Salieri’s point of view. Consider the source. At the beginning of the play, Salieri is an old man talking to the audience and confessing that he assassinated Mozart by poison, but essentially saying, “Hear my side of the problem that was this bumptious clown prince of music.” After all, how can one reconcile the kid’s boorishness with his supposed musical genius? The PCT production stars multiple award-winning Mark Almy, who also teaches music at College of the Desert, as Salieri, and Nicholas Sloan as Mozart. Janet Leigh Walker plays Constanze Weber (Mozart’s wife), with Donald Kelley, John Houlton, Hal O’Connel, Conrad Coral, Philip Hubler and Alex Updike.

Harp is an actress, singer, dancer, producer, choreographer and voice and dance instructor. Jon is a former actor and singer who left show business to work full time as a Colorist and college instructor. He now shares his time between homes in LA and Palm Springs and has returned to his first love, singing.

he Coachella Valley Symphony will present its upbeat “Afternoon at the Popera” featuring the California Desert Chorale under the direction of Tim Bruneau, along with soprano Dr. Lisa Lindley and baritone Jackson Lindley on Mother’s Day, May 8, at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert. The last time Dr. Lindley performed at the McCallum with the Coachella Valley Symphony, two years ago, the house of more than 1000 seats was completely sold out. Dr. Lindley’s gifted vocal range and variety of music selections from opera to pop to classical favorites sets this artist apart from the rest. Lindley is best known throughout the valley as a board certified gynecologist practicing on the campus of Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage since 2002. Prior to her medical career, Dr. Lindley studied and performed exten-
sively as a vocalist and in musical theater. The Huntsman: Winter’s War
Snow White sequel mash-up can’t find its way Not campy and gonzo enough to be real fun, nor dark and dangerous enough to qualify as truly grim, this is instead a drab, disjointed stab by a first-time feature director who, bless his heart, can’t seem to find his target in all the icy, FXladen glop. The best — and most amazing — thing about it by far is its all-star, A-list cast, all of whom who gamely give it their best in the service of something clearly less than “the fairest of them all.”

ey Snow White, where’d you go? In 2012, Snow White and the Huntsman gave the ageold fairy tale a sassy new actiony feminist twist, with Kristen Stewart as the feisty, fair-skinned maiden — foretold by the Magic Mirror to be the loveliest Neil Pond in the land — and Chris Hemsworth as the evil queen’s “huntsman” ordered to take her into the woods and kill her. Of course, things didn’t quite work out that way — and now we have The Huntsman: Winter’s War, a sequel. Actually it’s a prequel. Well, I think it’s a little of both, and a mash-up of several other things, too, and quite a bit of an all-around muddled mess. And Snow White seems to have wisely decided to steer clear from it all. So there’s no Snow in this Huntsman, unless you

Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain count the times she’s mentioned by name. But the movie certainly isn’t hurting for other talent. Hemsworth is back, and so is Charlize Theron as the wicked monarch Ravenna. Emily Blunt is newly aboard as Ravenna’s sister Freya, turned into a cruel “ice queen” by an act of heartless treachery. Jessica Chastain is Sara, who, like Hemsworth’s rebellious Huntsman, grew up as an abducted child soldier forced to serve in Freya’s army of marauders. British comedic actors Nick Frost and Rob Brydon, shrunk to wee size by the modern magic of digital effects, play a pair of dwarf brothers who provide most of the chuckles in this otherwise dull and dreary trek through a disjointed plot that feels like someone threw bits of Game of Thrones, Disney’s Frozen, Lord of the Rings and The Wizard of Oz into a blender with some crushed ice, black goo and gold flecks, then set it to puree.
If you’re into ornate costumes, you might dig the over-the-top duds in which Blunt and Theron get to vamp. In the couple of scenes they’re together, I kept wishing Cher would suddenly appear — maybe descending from the ceiling — for a full-on Las Vegas revue. The storybook decor is lush and quite lovely, especially when the Huntsman, Sara, the two dwarves and their specialeffect dwarf dates (Alexandra Roach and Sheridan Smith) take a day trip to Goblin Land, or something like that, to retrieve the purloined Magic Mirror, which looks like a huge polished cymbal from a music store. Some of the location filming was done in England’s Windsor Great Park, although I’m pretty sure you won’t find any big, blue ape-men, giant mosscovered snakes or tiny florescent flying fairies there.
