mology, geology, botany, and ornithology. The location, time of day, and duration of these explorations vary with the focus of hikes which are normally limited to 20 participant. Most hikes are moderate with minimal elevation gain. Recent hikes discovering the wonders of the Indian Canyons of Palm Springs have focused on the geology of Palm Canyon where hikers can learn about the natural processes that helped form the Canyon; plants and bugs of Tahquitz Canyon where you learn about bugs that prefer certain plants…. and why; and a close-up look at the
scenic landscape of the seldomhiked Murray Canyon. For bird watcher enthusiasts, the Museum’s early morning bird watching expeditions have been especially popular – whether they be at the nearby Tahquitz Canyon, at the Whitewater Preserve, or down Valley at the Salton Sea – where over 400 species of birds have been sighted. Part of the Pacific Coast Flyway, sightings have included American avocets, burrowing owls, merlins, sandhill cranes, and black-necked stilts. The final bird hike of this season
will be held on Sunday, April 24 at 6:45 a.m. The Museum will offer a bird hike in Big Morongo Canyon with Kurt Leuschner, Ornithologist and Professor of Natural Resources at College of the Desert. This hike in the Eco zone elevation of Morongo Canyon offers opportunities to see a variety of species of birds not encountered at other mountain elevations of this region. Advance registration is required. For registration and more information, call (760) 833-8169 or e-mail cvictor@accmuseum.org.
