The Classical Mystery Tour!

With The Desert Symphony Flashback to February 4, 1964 ...

The Beatles made their American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.

More than half a century later, audiences still remember where they were when they watched the Fab Four declare “I Want To Hold Your Hand!”

On the 52nd anniversary of this defining moment in American musical history, the original cast of the Broadway sensation Beatlemania returns to your Desert Symphony to perform more than twenty classic Beatles hits on Thursday, March 24, at 8 p.m. Audiences will experience live performances of many Beatles tunes that were never performed live by The Beatles themselves, and great care has been taken to ensure that every note will be performed exactly as it was on the original recordings. Imagine the piccolo trumpet of “Penny Lane”; “Eleanor Rigby” featuring the lush tones of the full string section; and the climax of “A Day in the Life” with the full orchestra in a cacophonous crescendo. “I grew up listening to Beatles songs, and

they are one of the main reasons I fell in love with music,” stated Nancy Tapick. Music Director, Gary Berkson shares his feelings “I’m so excited to have the chance to perform this music live.”

Classical Mystery Tour features Jim Owen (John Lennon) on rhythm guitar, piano and vocals; Tony Kishman (Paul McCartney) on bass guitar, piano and vocals;

David John (George Harrison) on lead guitar and vocals; and Chris Camilleri (Ringo Star) on drums and vocals. The four musicians in Classical Mystery Tour look and sound just like The Beatles, but Classical Mystery Tour is more than just a rock concert.

The show presents more than two dozen Beatles tunes transcribed note-for-note and performed exactly as they were originally re-

corded. Hear “Penny Lane” with a live trumpet section, experience the beauty of “Yesterday” with an acoustic guitar and string quartet, and enjoy the classical/rock blend on “I Am the Walrus.” Classical Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles – from early Beatles music on through the solo years – like you’ve never heard them before.

Popular Art Film Series’ Eighth Season Continues with Free Screening Film fans and art lovers of all ages are invited to discover inspiring and thought provoking cinema at the 2016 Palm Desert Public Art Documentary Film Series. The popular film series continues on Thursday, March 17 with a free screening of Beyond These Walls: Building Community Through Public Art. In 1992, a small group of community leaders in Portsmouth, Ohio asked, “How can we create pride in our community, improve the local economy, and change a dying part of town into the vibrant place it once was?” This

film tells the story of the visionaries & artists who transformed a drab, 2,200ft section of floodwall into a vast display of public art, history, and pride.

The evening will include a screening of Murals: Transformations.

This short, nine-minute documentary shows how Palm Springs Unified School District started and maintains a thriving mural program. Louisa Castrodale, the School District’s Arts Coordinator and artist Ryan Campbell are the evening’s featured speakers. The series concludes April 21 with a screening of A Model for Matisse.

The documentary film series is presented by the City of Palm Desert Public Art Department and the University of California, Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center. All films screen the third Thursday of the month, January through April, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at UCR Palm Desert, 75080 Frank Sinatra Drive.

Community Spotlight Joshua Springs MHP, Desert Hot Springs Alyson White, a Rancho Mirage high school senior, has a bill introduced

by Senator Stone (SB1395) to increase penalties for people who abuse animals. A study has shown that children who abuse animals can grow up to be adults who abuse children and possibly initiate domestic abuse. Let’s hope that this bill passes and that the Governor signs it into into law.

Be on the look out for white “dandelion” looking flowers. These are the wildflower called Pincushion. The recent rainfalls are bringing out many types of flowing wildflowers. There are yellow, purple, pink and white flowers starting to show. I’m hoping for blue California lupines, too, on Edom hill.

Caprese Salad lends itself to endless variations. Here are our favorites.

Caprese Salad with Roasted Beets.

Preheat oven to 375F. Wrap 3 beets individually in aluminum foil and place in the oven. Roast 1 hour or until tender. Let cool. Rub off skins.

Slice into 1/4-inch-thick rounds.

Follow directions in Classic Caprese Salad adding a layer of beets to the tomatoes, cheese and basil.

Caprese with Roasted Red Bell Peppers. Heat boiler. Cut 2 red bell peppers into halves. Flatten with hand.

Place on foil-lined baking sheet.

Broil until charred on top. Gather up foil and wrap peppers. Let cool. Peel.

Follow directions in Classic Caprese Salad adding a layer of peppers to tomatoes, cheese and basil.

Caprese Pasta Salad. Chop leftover Caprese Salad or cut into smaller pieces. Toss with cooked penne pasta or other short pasta.

Classic Caprese Salad Use pieces of toasted, crusty bread to mop up the rich mix of tomato juices, fruity olive oil and aromatic vinegar.

• 3 large ripe heirloom tomatoes • 2 (4-ounce) fresh mozzarella balls (buffalo milk is best if available) • Fresh basil leaves • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar • 2 tablespoons fruity extra-virgin olive oil • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt • 1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper 1. Slice tomatoes into 1/4-inch-thick rounds.

2. Drain mozzarella from package brine solution and pat dry with a paper towel. Slice into 1/4-inchthick rounds. (To make slicing easy, dip your knife into hot water to warm the blade between cuts.)

3. Arrange alternating slices of tomato and mozzarella and basil leaves on four plates. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and olive oil; sprinkle with salt and pepper and a scattering of torn basil leaves. Set aside 5 minutes to allow flavors to intensify.

Serves 4.

Basket Identification, Desert Plants and Artifact Replicas On Saturday, March 19, Agua Caliente Cultural Museum will present two simultaneous events related to the culture of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Both events will be held at the Museum from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Outside, on the lawn in-front of the Museum, Education Outreach Specialist Jona Kalayjian has planned a fascinating and fun-filled learning experience with opportunities to see and touch plants and replicas of artifacts used by the Cahuilla people of this region over thousands of years. Adults and children are welcome.

Inside the Museum, David Salk and Justin Farmer – two experts on Cahuilla- and Mission-style baskets – will be available to consult with owners of Native baskets brought to the Museum for examination.

The combined expertise of these

two experts is sure to increase your understanding of baskets in your possession.

Daylight Savings Time: How it Started he was Minister to France, Franklin felt it was only natural that when it was dark outside, more people would be sleeping and that extending daytime hours according to season would increase productivity.

Daylight saying time has a contentious 227 year old history that didn’t begin in the U.S. and has many theories as to why it exists. How many of you said it exists for the farmers or for school kids?

According to Congressional Research, daylight saving was originally put in place to give people more daylight hours to work and do other activities. Conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 at the time when

William Willet proposed that daylight saving time be adopted in British Parliament because doing work and other activities in daylight hours would reduce demand on artificial light. Germany began observing daylight saving to conserve fuel during World War I. The U.S. went through a lot of back-andforth regarding daylight saving. The practice was adopted in 1918, abolished for unpopularity after WWI and reinstated during WWII — at this time it was called War Time and took place year round. Several states maintained daylight saving after this ended but it caused much angst to the transportation industry that pushed for uniformed timezones.

After the Uniform Time Act of 1966 was passed, states could choose to participate in daylight saving, but the whole state had to adhere to the decision, but now states can split if they are also split according to time zone.

and the fact that people just like long summer days have been used as popular reasons for daylight saving.

Although it seems to have all these positive effects, a 2009 Michigan State University study correlated the time change in favor of summer hours with an increase in workplace injuries. The study found that workers slept about 40 minutes less per night during daylight swings.
