Fourth Annual Canada/Snowbird Fest at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa

The fourth annual Canada/Snowbird Fest will be held Saturday, February 27, and Sunday, February 28, at the Agua Caliente Resort Spa Casino in Rancho Mirage. This year’s event will feature many activities, programs and entertainment. An Electric Vehicle Show will display top technology vehicles of many uses – sports, mobility, transportation and more. This event is included in the $10 admission charge to the Canada/Snowbird Fest.

On Saturday, there will be two performances in The Show at the Agua Caliente Casino. A 12:30 p.m. show

presented by JWP Productions will feature “Return to Paradise,” a Polynesian Review with dancers and songs from all the Polynesian Islands, including a Don Ho Tribute. Tickets for this event are $25.

Owen, Judy Bell of The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies and Kevin Shaffer of The Wounded Warrior Project. There will be a tribute to the military in the finale. Tickets for this event are $25 to $75.

At 8 p.m., the entertainment will be a “Rollicking Rock Roll ’n’ R&B” concert that will include performances by the following original groups: The Coasters, Jack Marcellino of Sha Na Na, Freddie Pool of The Three Degrees and Peter Beckett and Ron Moss of Player. Also featured will be production numbers by The Satin Dollz, Bethany

Newer bulb technology going up all over the Park. Reid has been very busy changing our street light bulbs from mercury/vapor ones to LED ones. They are not screw in as house bulbs are but each new lamp holds multiple bulbs. He said they would save about l/3 of the amount of electricity needed to run them over prior ones. Over a years time this should amount to quite a savings.

Remember weed spray is toxic to animals. Use full strength vinegar and dish soap on weeds instead. Before you do any spraying, make sure you are not killing local wildflowers that have just sprouted

8th Annual ‘Art in the Square’ in Indio

The sidewalks and courtyard areas surrounding City Hall and the Indio Public Library will be the canvases for the Eigth Annual “Art in the Square,” slated for February 26-27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The event is open to the public and art supplies will be provided

by the City of Indio’s Public Arts and Preservation Commission, free of charge to all who wish to participate. This year’s event will kick off with creative chalk art by professional artists followed by student art demonstrations. Drawing areas will be designated to allow participants adequate space to create their own artwork. Mayor Miller will award prizes for the four best artworks at a closing ceremony on Saturday, February 27. Indio City Hall is located at 100 Civic Center Mall, Indio. 5th Annual Drive Against Hunger Charity Golf Tournament The fifth annual Drive Against Hunger Charity Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians and Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and hosted by a group of resident volunteers from Sun City Shadow Hills, has to date raised over $100,000 to help various organizations provide food throughout the Coachella Valley for individuals and families.

This year the charities to receive all proceeds from the tournament are the FIND Food Bank and The Galilee Center. These two organizations help distribute over 10.5 million pounds of food to over 90,000 individuals monthly. They were also chosen because of their dedication to fighting hunger, and its causes, in our community, and because of

their strong volunteer bases, which allow them to “stretch” every dollar we donate to them.

The tournament will be played on Friday, March 11, starting at 8:30 a.m., at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino’s Eagle Falls Golf Course, 84-245 Indio Springs Parkway. Cost is $125 per person and donations of any kind are welcome. The tax deductible fee includes green fees, range balls, a tee package with gift cards, box lunch and refreshments, and the after tournament party where there will be a buffet, refreshments, prizes, awards, a raffle, and a silent auction .

The best oatmeal cookies are crisp on the outside, chewy in the middle, and lightly browned at the edges, just like these. The nubby texture comes from the rolled oats. This recipe, with dried cherries, white chocolate and walnuts, is a variation of the original Toll House cookie, which was invented in the 1930s by Ruth Wakefield, a New England innkeeper. According to historians, when she was out of bakers’ chocolate, Wakefield chopped up a candy bar and added it to a favorite cookie batter.

Oatmeal Cookies 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup quick-cooking (not instant) oats 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup white chocolate chips 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup chopped dried cherries

Use this recipe as a blueprint. Bittersweet or milk chocolate chips can be substituted for the white chocolate, pecans or macadamia nuts can be used instead of walnuts, and raisins or cranberries can take the place of the cherries. If you’re adding raisins or dried cranberries, they don’t have to be chopped.

After baking the cookies, let them cool on the baking sheet a few minutes before transferring them to the rack. If you try to remove them too soon, they can break. Once the cookies are completely cool, they can go into a tightly closed tin.

1. Preheat oven to 325F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.

2. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl to blend. Whisk in oats.

3. In a mixing bowl, beat butter, brown and granulated sugars, egg, and vanilla at medium speed until blended. Turn mixer to low speed and add flour mixture. Add white chocolate, walnuts and cherries. Mix until evenly distributed.

4. Drop by 1/4-cupfuls 2-inches apart onto baking sheets. Bake 13 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Place sheets on wire racks and let cool 3 minutes. Remove cookies to wire racks to cool. Makes 14 cookies.

Indio Police Chief Announces Retirement Indio Chief of Police Richard P. Twiss recently announced he is retiring from law enforcement, effective June 8, 2016, bringing his distinguished, three-decade career as a peace officer to a close. The City has begun the process of finding his replacement.

“It has been an honor to serve the community I love and have raised my family in as Chief of Police,” said Chief Twiss. “Through the years, I’ve had the opportunity to play a small part in helping my community and changing the lives of its residents for the better. This job has been my life’s calling.”

Russian Virtuoso Pianist Performs at Camelot Theaters When the Palm Springs Community Concert Association resumes on Monday, February 29, the gifted performer will be keyboard artist Svetlana Smolina. Dr. Smolina has performed widely in the US and abroad, being a frequent guest at music festivals worldwide.

Dr. Smolina, who is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s School of Music, is presently Artist in Residence at Temple University. Her classical repertoire varies widely from Chopin to Stravinsky, much it featured

on the Decca/Phillips label, as well as Deutsche Grammophone.
