The 2016 Palm Desert Senior Games & International Sports Festival is almost here! Scheduled for February 18 - 20, 2016 in beautiful Palm Desert, California, the games will be hosting over 1,000 athletes from all over the United States and Canada for the FIRST California Senior Games of the year.

The event will take place in various locations in Palm Desert showcasing true competitive spirit. Opening ceremonies will take place on February 18, 9 a.m., at the Palm Desert Community Center. The event is

open to ages 35 and up. The public is encouraged to attend the games and cheer on the competitors. Admission is free.

Our Halloween party was an absolute “hoot!” lots of costumes and our witches would scare the horns off the devil. Even Pope Francis, aka Boris was there to party. I looked up and said to myself, “OMG” did they have to send the Pope after me, I know it’s been a long time since my last confession and I truly have tried to be good - honest! Mary Poppins, plus many that we didn’t have recognise were there. It was a super time.

Thanksgiving is always a wonderful time to be thankful for all that we are blessed with - old and new friends and lots to do with our vacation. Plus an outstanding meal.

The dances with live are always a hit, lots of laughter and dancing. Of course, there is always great food to share.

Christmas and New Year’s Eve are always full to the rafters with lots of good cooks here at Rainbow.

Mother nature sure has been cruel cold and windy - we need the rain, “mother” but do we need it to be so cold and windy?

Folks come and go, home for some of the holidays, but right back for more great times at Rainbow.

Seems like the “bad bug” has many ill and in bed - lots and lots!

California Winter League Begins Seventh Season The California Winter League will kick off the seventh season on January 21, with games beginning at 9 a.m. in Palm Springs. Since its inception prior to the 2010 season, the CWL has committed itself to providing a family-friendly baseball experience for fans, while also providing meaningful development for its players – many of whom have descended upon the Coachella Valley in the hopes of securing a professional contract.

The 2016 season will feature 14 teams, including the defending champion Canada A’s and over 300 aspiring ballplayers from all over the world. Also in participation will be twenty instructors from all across professional baseball, including representatives affiliated with six Major League Baseball franchises, as well

as those affiliated with independent leagues such as the Atlantic League, the American Association, the Canadian-American Association the Pacific Association, and the Frontier League – with whom the CWL began a partnership in 2015.

During all games at the stadium fans will find affordable entertainment with one ticket giving them admission to the entire day of games.

Palm Desert Public Art Documentary Film Series The public is invited to discover inspiring and thought provoking cinema at the 2016 Palm Desert Public Art Documentary Film Series. The popular series’ eighth season of free, art-themed documentaries begins on January 21 with a screening of Sol Lewitt: Wall Drawings.

The film focuses on a celebrated retrospective of the art of Sol Lewitt, who during a four-decade long career produced more than 1,200 wall drawings using a deliberately limited repertoire of lines and geometric shapes to create works of remarkable complexity. The retrospective exhibition, which began a 25-year run at MASS MoCA in Massachusetts in 2008, includes 105 of Lewitt’s works installed on 40,000 square feet of old mill wall surface. A question and answer session with Steven Biller, editor-at-large for Palm Springs Life

and contributing writer to Art Ltd will follow the screening.

The documentary film series is presented by the City of Palm Desert Public Art Department and the University of California, Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center. All films screen the third Thursday of the month, January through April, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at UCR Palm Desert, 75080 Frank Sinatra Drive.

Each screening will include a featured speaker who will discuss that night’s film.

Twice-baked potatoes often take an unhealthy turn. Brimming with butter and sour cream, they’re loaded, all right, and not in a good (healthy) way.

Our new spins on stuffed spuds bring fresh new flavors and not too much fat (only 11 grams or less per serving).

For each of the variations below: Preheat the oven to 425°F. Wash two large russet potatoes and pat dry.

(Russets have a high starch content and are better for baking than red-skinned or Yukon Gold potatoes.) Rub the skins with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Prick the potatoes with a fork in several places. Place on a baking sheet. Bake 50 to 60 minutes, until tender. Let cool slightly. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F. Cut the potatoes into halves lengthwise. Scoop out the pulp, leaving about 1/4 inch of potato pulp on the skin. Place the scooped pulp in a large bowl and the skins on

a baking sheet. Add the remaining ingredients to the pulp, mixing well.

Pile into the potato skins. Bake about 15 minutes, until hot.

Serves 4.

Loaded Potatoes Artichoke Swiss Stuffed Potatoes 1 (6-oz) jar marinated artichokes, chopped, plus 2 Tbsp of the marinade, 4 oz Swiss cheese, shredded Pizza Potatoes 1/2 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes in oil, 4 oz Fontina cheese, grated Chopped pepperoni (optional) Broccoli Cheese Stuffed Potatoes 2/3 cup Alouette or Boursin cheese, 1 1/2 cups broccoli or cauliflower florets, microwaved for 2 minutes

Art Under the Umbrellas

Golf may be king this time of year, especially with the CarrierBuilder Challenge wrapping up this week, but as seen on the pages of this edition of Desert Entertainer, there is a whole lot going on this weekend around the Coachella Valley. So contemplate your options carefully, then head over to Old Town La Quinta for a groovy day of Art Under the Umbrellas on Saturday, January 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

day art shows — brings together a diverse mix of 80 talented artists from across Southern California and the Southwest to exhibit and sell their original artwork and fine crafts. Art lovers will discover unique treasures in every price level along the streets of Old Town La Quinta, where the spirit and architecture of Old California is brought to life in a chic outdoor shopping and dining village.

And as usual, the crazy popular Steve Madaio Band will literally have patrons dancing in the streets as they explore the artist booths, shop the Old Town shops, and dine and imbibe at the great restaurants on site.

Saturday’s show will spotlight artists Robert Fleming and Nancy Lynn. This husband and wife duo reside in Bermuda Dunes, primarily painting and showing their works locally and throughout the

Southwest. Their works in watercolors (Bob) and acrylic (Nancy) most often depict a myriad of desert scenes, cheery blooming cactus and idyllic landmarks painted on location. Both artists are perennial favorites of La Quinta Arts Festival and Art Under the Umbrellas – always exhibiting side-by-side.

Bob began his painting career at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City designing cards, gift-wrap and books. It was there during a watercolor demonstration by the world famous John Pike that his keen enthusiasm for watercolor emerged.

His original watercolors are created using a wet-in-wet technique giving them a fresh and spontaneous feeling. In 2008, Fleming had his historical golf painting based on the 1913 US Open accepted into the Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida.

Southern California born and raised, Nancy Lynn paints in a style which reflects the vibrancy and energy of her beloved sundrenched vistas of the remote Southwest desert. Although her works are plein air, they have a unique vitality and abstract impressionism which elevates them above the typical “open air” genre. Yet with all the energy her works exude, there is an intriguing, peaceful sense of order and feeling of déja-vu in Nancy Lynn’s paintings.

Why do Sea Otters hold hands while sleeping?

Sea otters holding hands while sleeping may seem cute and adorable, but this practice that they exhibit actually serves a genuine, and necessary need for them. It all comes down to nature. They are herd, or pack animals. Alone they face almost certain death. As sea faring animals the tide and cur-

rents of the ocean can force them to drift away from their companions, pretty much as a ship or a boat does if it’s not anchored.

Of course this is only a problem for them when they are sleeping.

When they are awake they have almost full control of their own navigation. When sea otters are sleeping, eating or resting they form floating groups called rafts.

When they are a raft all of the sea otters hold hands to prevent themselves from floating adrift from each other. A raft of otters can range from just 2 otters up to hundreds of them. They have also been seen to wrap themselves up in the sea weed that grows up from the ocean floor to help stop themselves from floating away. Now that’s a nifty trick right there.

Dynamic Grease-Busting Duo: The chemistry between baking soda and vinegar is so powerful that this combo can flush grease out of kitchen drains. Just pour ½ cup baking soda into a clogged drain and follow it with ½ cup white vinegar. Cover the

drain for a few minutes as the chemical reaction dissolves the grease - then flush the drain with warm water. A caveat: Never use this method after trying a commercial drain cleaner; the cleaner could react with vinegar to create dangerous fumes.

Sunnylands to Close for Presidential Summit The White House has announced that President Obama will host a summit with leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at Sunnylands in February.
