2nd Annual Lighting of the Trees Tis the Season help the Homeless Youth Project benefitting the Palm Springs Unified School District’s Homeless & Needy Children program.

The El Gato Skateboard Classic has agreed to help out through their “Legends Give Back” program. The Skateboard Classic begins the following day and includes skateboard legend Tony Hawk who is also the Community Grand Marshall for the annual Palm Springs Festival of Lights parade on Saturday, December 5, at 5:45 p.m., on Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs.

Everyone is invited to kick off the holidays with the second annual lighting of the Christmas Trees at the downtown Village Green in Palm Springs.

The event is free and takes place on Friday, December 4, at 5 p.m., at 221 South Palm Canyon Drive,

Palm Springs. In addition to the tree lighting and festivities, P.S. Resorts and the Rotary Club of Palm Springs are coordinating the donation of 90 skateboards and helmets to students in the Palm Springs Unified School District. The event will include caroling from the Boys and Girls Club

of Palm Springs, complimentary hot chocolate from Ristretto, and of course, a visit from Santa!

It was also believed that the oak mistletoe could extinguish fire. The traditions which began with the European mistletoe were transferred to the similar American plant with the process of immigration and settlement.

Community Garden Reopens in Palm Desert Following an extensive fourmonth renovation project, Palm Desert celebrated the reopening of the City’s first community garden on November 30.

Located on the southwest corner of Guadalupe and San Pablo avenues, the City’s Guadalupe Community Garden was the only such garden in the region when it opened in 1999.

On August 1, the facility was closed for a much needed makeover that included removal of the existing garden boxes and installation of a brand new irrigation system.

The redesigned layout has created space for three additional garden boxes, which translates into spots for three more community gar-

deners. The new 4-foot by 10-foot boxes are made from concrete and recycled glass, the same material found in the new benches and trash cans on El Paseo. A new irrigation main line has been installed as well as a drip system in each box, eliminating the need for soaker hoses and making the garden more water efficient. Wood chips have been spread over the bare area around the boxes to minimize dust.

Certified Farmers’ Market in Palm Desert Moves Back to Mornings In an effort to make the mid-week Certified Farmers’ Market in Palm Desert more accessible to more residents, and because of the success of last springs’ evening market, the Palm Springs Cultural Center, which produces the valley’s three Certified Farmers’ Markets, elected to move the Wednesday Certified Farmers’ Market in Palm Desert to

“Thanks For The Memories” A Bob Hope Holiday Tribute to the Troops

Returning to the Palm Springs Air Museum by popular demand is “Thanks for the Memories.” On December 5, this one performance only matinee will recreate the spirit of Bob Hope’s legendary visits to Vietnam during which he traveled with a cadre of notable singers, actors, and dancers, to entertain the troops during the holidays. “First Weekend” Palm Desert Events First Weekend Palm Desert is held monthly the first weekend from November through May. Kicking off First Weekend in December is the City of Palm Desert’s community celebration of seasonal cheer on Friday, December 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The event begins with the annual wreath lighting ceremony, and there will be a festive light display, delicious treats, carolers singing holiday favorites, and a visit from Santa Claus. The event takes places in the courtyard and entrance to the Palm Desert City Council Chamber at Palm Desert Civic Center located at 73510 Fred Waring Drive.

• This month’s free guided Public Art Tour takes place at the El Paseo Exhibition on Saturday, December 5, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. This tour provides insight to the many notable sculptures along El Paseo. Tours

Citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines, lemons, and limes, will do fine for up to a week in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, but you can lengthen their lives by storing them in the fridge in a mesh or perforated plastic bag.
