Why senior centers matter

By Peter Rittenhouse If you’re like most folks in the Coachella Valley you came here to vacation, retire, or simply to get away from the cold! Some of us came for jobs and when we retired, we decided to stay. I’d like to make you aware of an often overlooked resource in your own community, the local Senior Center. They are called by many

names, and you’ve probably heard of one or two, but did you know that there are nine here in the Coachella Valley? Each one is unique and offers a varied program of activities. Some are membership organizations; some are pay for services; and some are free, so shop around.

their members. There are classes in everything imaginable. The majority of centers offer a variety of exercise programs. Falls are the number one risk for seniors. The Mizell Senior Center offers a terrific “Falls Prevention Program.”
