PALMINA WINES IT’S ABOUT FAMILY
Have you ever walked into “a place,” such as a home, inn, restaurant or winery tasting room and instantly feel welcomed? You think to yourself, “I belong here!” That is the feeling you will experience entering Palmina’s tasting room in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto (25 minutes west of Buellton). Sit at one of the rectangular tables, decorated to reflect the season, as you are welcomed into La Famiglia.
A JOURNEY FROM ART TO ART
Palmina’s wine is a perfect complement to any table, festive or otherwise.

1219 CC.indd 8
Winemaker/owner Steve Clifton had a successful career in the music industry, as a singer and producer. Following trips to Italy, and while working in a restaurant he became enamored with Italian wines and cooking. As Steve relates his transition from one form of entertainment and restaurant art, to the art of winemaking, there is a sparkle in his eyes and broad smile on his face – conveying the love and passion he has for not only wine (explaining how creating wine is like creating music), but for people. For more than 25 years Steve has been crafting award-winning wines, and become a trendsetter in the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. His project with Greg Brewer, (Brewer-Clifton wines) has led to a specific focus in this unique wine region, with his Palmina and La Voix labels. The journey from music to innovative winemaker didn’t happen overnight. Deciding to focus on his love of wine and food, Steve was not classically trained in the art of winemaking. In 1991, he began his new craft in the vineyards, cellar and tasting room of Rancho Sisquoc – learning about the earth and how to blend and create wine art, much as he did musical art. Totally immersing himself, in 1995 he became the first winemaker at Beckman Vineyards, and that same year, started Palmina in his home basement. Steve had become the second generation of highly esteemed Santa Barbara County winemakers. Looking back, as the saying goes, “the rest is history.”

Palmina’s 2019 Vineyard Party at La Arboleda in Sta Rita Hills. A bi-annual bash. This one featured the Molly Ringwald Project band, compelling guests to break-in their dance shoes.
A TASTE OF ITALY Being a frequent visitor to Italy (where his sister lived), Steve fell in love with Italian varietals. The Santa Ynez Valley is largely known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but Steve had this vision of focusing on Italian wines, carving out an exciting niche for these not so well known in the US wines. Palmina became the only winery in the area exclusively focusing on Italian wines, among them: Pinot Grigio, Vermentino, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Nebbiolo. All told, Palmina currently grows 12 Italian-variety grapes. One of Palmina’s most alluring wines is Alisos, a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot, where 10% of the Sangiovese comes from dried fruit. Not surprisingly, it’s Palmina’s #1 selling wine! As we sipped wine, chatting and munching on dried fruit, nuts, and crackers, Steve commented: “Italian wines belong on the table. They express an Italian attitude of family, food, life and conversation.”
PALMINA: AN HOMAGE Toward the end of our sipping together, Steve shared a personal story – perhaps deep down a story that truly set him on his way to follow a dream and passion of making wines that simply, brought people together as one. While working 18 hour days, learning the restaurant business, he lived with a friend of the family, Paula. Paula was born in South Tuscany, and as Steve relates, “She was like a grandmother to me.” Coming home late at night, they would sip (a martini!) and talk about the day – giving Steve time to decompress – and re-energize, ready to start again the next day. After Paula passed away, Steve discovered that her birth name was Palmina; Palmina Winery is an homage to the woman that taught him about how to live life, and improve the lives of others, through wine, food and “an Italian attitude.” All who enter the Palmina tasting room will feel they are a part of the family. >> BY DON SONDERLING

FUN FACTS • LA VOIX (a project Steve begun in 2015) focuses on vineyard specific French Burgundies: Chardonnay & Pinot Noir. As Steve says: “La Voix wines are the voice of the vineyard.” • A Palmina / La Voix tasting room is opening in Los Olivos in early 2020 … stay tuned! • La Voix wine was featured in the celebrity gift bags of November’s pre-party for the 2019 American Music Awards. • Each La Voix wine has a specific song title related to it. • Palmina and La Voix wines will be poured and featured in the pre-party lounge and in the celebrity gift bags for the 2020 Academy Awards and Grammy Awards. • Living in the Palmina tasting room is a vintage apple press that Steve used as a grape press when he first started out. It required hours of walking in a circle to press the juice from the grapes. • There’s always an attractive assortment of tasty “munchies” to accompany your tasting. • President Obama gave a wooden wine box of Palmina’s wine to the Italian President at the G8 Summit. • Palmina’s wine has been served at two different White House State Dinners • Some recent accolades: Robert Parker: Palmina 2018 Pinot Grigio (90 points) SF Chronical Wine Competition 2019: – Palmina 2017 Vermentino (Silver) - Palmina 2014 Nebbiolo (Bronze) Vinous: La Voix 2012 “Reflektor” Pinot Noir (95 points) - La Voix 2014 “Rebel Rebel” Pinot Noir (91-93 points) – La Voix 2013 “Satisfaction” Pinot Noir (92 points) Wine Enthusiast: La Voix 2015 “So What” Syrah (91 points) – La Voix 2015 Reflektor Pinot Noir (90 points) – 2015 Satisfaction Pinot Noir (90 points) • Join Steve for his first ever Italy Winemaking Cruise, setting sail in October 2020. ALLEGRETTO VINEYARD RESORT More than a lavish hotel, Allegretto Vineyard Resort is a destination where guests can indulge in Central Coast cuisine made from locally sourced, fresh ingredients. In Paso Robles, resort owner Douglas Ayres has created a countryside oasis that merges artistry and artifacts that reflect his travels in South America, Asia, and Europe. Every aspect of Allegretto Vineyard Resort is designed to harmonize and inspire so that visits are meaningful and unforgettable. “People often enter ancient spaces and are in awe, but they don’t know why, exactly,” said Ayres. “There are reasons, but most people just feel a sense of peace and joy. That’s what we want for Allegretto.” The resort offers 171 European-inspired guestrooms and suites, 14-foot-high ceilings and private terrazzas. Custom Plush Dream Sleeper tops dressed in high-thread-count bedding will lull guests to sleep. In the morning, prepare for the day in marbled bathrooms with plush bamboo towels, robes and slippers, spa toiletries, and wide, well-lit mirrors. For celebrations, a 375-person ballroom, beautifully appointed smaller rooms, and over 35,000 square feet of outdoor event space accommodate weddings, parties or business events. Allegretto’s onsite Catering and Events team has everything covered. If you can envision it, they can create it.

CELLO RISTORANTE & BAR Chef Justin Picard creates delicious Northern Italian cuisine with ingredients sourced from local farmers and foraged from the chef’s own garden. Breakfast, lunch, small bites and dinner are served along with gluten-free, vegetarian-friendly and vegan meal options, and steaks are grilled on Allegretto’s red and white oak pit. “We are 100 percent locally oriented,” said Chef Picard. “From the farmers who stock our kitchen to the people who cook and serve here, Paso Robles is a down-to-earth community, and we welcome that sense of togetherness. We even grow a variety of olives to make our own olive oil and brine olives from 120 trees.” “There’s a perception that food from a large-scale hotel is going to be overly expensive,” Chef Picard added. “There’s no pretense here, only the best in food and service.” Cello Ristorante is open daily for breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m. and serves breakfast buffets on Saturday and Sunday. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and prices range from $17 to $22. For dinner, the restaurant is open from 5 to 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Prices range from $28 to $50. “People are so wonderful in Paso Robles,” said Chef Picard. “It’s not a dog-eat-dog community. We’re a fraternal group of people who pitch in and help one another.” Speaking of dogs, Allegretto is a resort that accommodates well-behaved pups on the patio at lunch. Outside seating offers a capacity of 54 people with unobstructed views of the sunset.
“For December, we’re featuring Caliza Winery’s End of the Day Cuvée, Fableist Wine Company’s Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cotes du Coast, a beautiful white Rhône-style blend by Sans Liege in Paso Robles, to name a few.” Cocktails feature locally barrel-aged brandy from Bethel Rd. Distillery, gin from Re:Find Distillery, whiskey from Krobar Craft Distillery, and vodka from Tin City Distillery. For craft beer fans, Allegretto pours barrel-aged selections handpicked by Eric Ponce, Firestone Walker’s barrel program manager. “We really embrace the community and use resources from the region,” said Thomas. “It is a wonderful way to connect people to what is grown and produced right here in Paso Robles.” >> BY MELISSA CHAVEZ
‘Bring in the New Year’ on December 31 features Martin Paris Band in the ballroom with dancing from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Cash bar. Enjoy a sparkling wine toast at midnight. Cost is $50 per person. Call 1-805-369-2500 or email concierge@allegrettoresort.com
DECEMBER BAR SELECTIONS A natural fit with Allegretto’s farm-to-fork entrees are garden-to-glass cocktails, craft beers and Paso Robles appellation wines. In the bar, the menu is available from 2 to 11 p.m., and Happy Hour runs from 3 to 6 p.m. Industry Night takes place on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. with entertainment to keep things lively. “Allegretto enjoys wonderful relationships with winemakers throughout the Paso Robles region, and we offer an exceptional wine list, including wines by local garagiste winemakers,” said Thomas Humphrey, Food and Beverage Director.

WE OLIVE DELICIOUS IDEAS FOR HOLIDAY GIFT-GIVING The holiday season is a great time to take advantage of the farm-totable cuisine that the Paso Robles region has to offer, from appetizers and entrees, to festive beverages and desserts. The Central Coast’s Mediterranean climate makes for ideal conditions in which olive oil producers can showcase organically grown fruit that is robust and flavorful. The We Olive specialty store in Downtown Paso Robles sells only olive oil that has been certified pure by the California Olive Oil Council, the sole American organization that provides olive oil certification. In fact, all olive oils sold at We Olive are lab-tested and taste-tested to ensure purity and quality. One local producer is Fandango Olive Oil, which uses Spanish Arbequina olives and Greek Koroneiki certified-organic olives. Berardo Olive Oil Estates produces a Tuscan-style blend of oil from four varieties of traditional Pendolino, Frantoio, Moraiolo, and Leccino olives. Olivas de Oro Olive Company sustainably grows, harvests and cold-presses Arbequina, Mission and Sevillano olives.
STOP THE OLIVE PRESSES! At We Olive, everyone is excited about the latest shipment of We Olive Olio Nuovo 2019, the freshest oil available in the store during the harvest season. Right after milling in November, this oil was rushed to the shelves for shoppers to take advantage of it at the peak of flavor.

This unfiltered, full-flavored oil is bright and grassy with a peppery spiced finish – perfect for dipping with crusty bread and adding excitement to simple cool-weather dishes, such as pizza or pan-fried potatoes, or drizzled on roasted asparagus or Brussels sprouts with chopped garlic and shallots. We Olive’s Jalapeno Olive Oil is a consistent top-seller that enlivens Pico de Gallo Salsa, Bloody Mary cocktails and even popcorn. Another option is Organic Meyer Lemon Olive Oil. This useful oil can be drizzled on vegetables, chicken, fish, sauces and pestos, or added to berry cobbles, blintzes and waffles.
SEASONAL BALSAMIC VINEGARS Those who have not yet tasted We Olive’s seasonal balsamic vinegars are in for a treat. We Olive Pomegranate White Balsamic Vinegar tastes great with butternut squash sprinkled with pomegranate seeds, or it can be stirred with pomegranate juice, vodka and orange liqueur over ice. For a non-alcoholic refresher, mix the vinegar with sparkling seltzer and agave syrup or honey and pour over ice. We Olive Citrus Spice Balsamic Vinegar can intensify the flavor of roasted acorn squash. But it also mixes perfectly with spiced rum and a splash of apple cider shaken with ice. Add an apple slice and a cinnamon stick stirrer for an attractive holiday cocktail. We Olive Champagne Mimosa White Balsamic Vinegar is ideal on fruit, salad vinaigrette, or seafood. We Olive’s Artisan Peach White Balsamic Vinegar is made from peaches grown in San Luis Obispo. Not only does this aromatic vinegar create a mouth-watering glaze on pork or turkey, it’s delicious when drizzled on Greek yogurt and ice cream.
GIFT IDEAS Grab-and-Go bottles filled with olive oils or vinegars make convenient and impressive presents and can be refilled. Two size options in 12.57 or 25.36-ounce bottles can be personalized with custom etching for just about any occasion. Want to spoil family and friends with a mixed assortment? We Olive has you covered with a wide variety of goodies to choose from that will wow the most devoted foodies on your list. LAGO GIUSEPPE WINERY A HIDDEN GEM — SOOTHING THE SOUL AND THE PALATE Imagine you are driving down that proverbial “road less travelled,” venturing off the more popular wine roads. Your trek takes you up the 46 West, about halfway between Paso Robles and Cambria, where you turn down a dusty road, and approach a small Tuscan Villa. You have just arrived at Lago Giuseppe – where you will discover a true hidden gem – which may easily be described as a slice of Shangri-La.
THE ITALIAN WAY Joseph or Jeanine Mistretta, or possibly one of their daughters will be in the tasting room to greet you – with an effusive smile. Instantly you feel welcomed into their family by their friendliness, smiles, and wine. This is a family winery in every sense of the word. Wine, food, fun, laughter and ambience seems to be the cornerstone of the typical Italian family, and that is what you will experience at Lago Giuseppe. Prepare to enjoy your visit “the Italian way,” and allow yourself enough time so you can sit back, enjoy their wines and food, while you submerge yourself into a state of calm and relaxation. After all, isn’t that what wine tasting and friends is all about?
START WITH THE WINE --IT ONLY GETS BETTER Winemaker Robert Fuller has been making wine in Paso Robles for more than ten years … and works his craft for Lago Giuseppe using grapes mostly sourced from Paso Robles’

Westside. Having the freedom to source from specific vineyards and micro-climates, Lago Giuseppe is able to offer a variety of wines to please every taste. Italian and Sicilian varietals being the specialty (Joe is 100% Sicilian heritage), you will also find a selection of Bordeaux, Rhône and Burgundian varietals and blends. Be certain, especially on a warm afternoon, to start with the Bellezza Nona, a small production white blend of 70% Viognier, 20% Malvasia Bianca and 10% Orange Muscat. As Joe describes this wine, “it’s like any good Sicilian woman, delightful, zesty and complex.” Once you begin your tasting, on a nice day (and most days in the Central Coast are), move out onto the patio to sip, and on weekends, enhance your wine tasting as you enjoy a hand-thrown pizza, charcuterie platter, or an assortment of gourmet items from the monthly menu. Daughter Morgan is a Cordon-Bleu trained chef … and her talents are evident in every item served by Lago Giuseppe – from pizza and homemade pasta (on Sundays during the winter), to the melt in your mouth chocolates, truffles and Italian gelato. Homemade, with the freshest ingredients, you will simply settle in for the afternoon … and whisk your cares away. As if the wine and food and conversation aren’t enough, once out on the patio, you may find yourself hypnotized by the natural, springfed lake that is Lago Giuseppe’s backyard. You will see hawks floating overhead, water fowl, and depending on the time of day, a beaver and pond turtles. The lake is even stocked with a variety of fi sh – and for those who stay at one of the guest suites, bring your fi shing license and fi shing pole to try your luck (catch and release) for largemouth bass, carp, catfi sh or bluegill. As Joseph (or Giuseppe) says, “The lake is the heartbeat of the property,” however, the true heartbeat of this tucked away piece of heaven is really Joseph, Jeanine, Morgan and Rhiannon – who will instantly make you feel you have arrived home and joined their famiglia. >> BY DON SONDERLING

ZOTOVICH VINEYARDS AND WINERY A NAME YOU WON’T FORGET -- WINES YOU WILL REMEMBER “Come taste with our passionate staff” is more than just a sentence on Zotovich’s webpage. From the moment I walked into the tasting room and met Simonne, her smile, laughter and champagne like personality set the tone for what was to follow. Wine tasting should be fun, informative, and experiential. Zotovich (and Simonne) not only delivered on all those points-but exceeded.
A REFLECTION OF PLACE Winemakers are prone to say that they aim for their wines to reflect “the place.” With the many microclimates and soil types that are prevalent in the Sta. Rita Hills, this is not only a challenge, but an opportunity to stand out. Joey Gummere, winemaker, has the talent to bring out the characteristics from the special vineyards of Zotovich. As you will learn when wine tasting, Zotovich prides themselves on saying, “brininess is our hallmark.” Here you truly will taste wines from grapes that reflect the unique terroir, freshness and geologic history of this part of the Sta. Rita Hills.
TASTE THE DIFFERENCE Whichever tasting you choose, you will be treated to the best of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, and the unique vineyard site where the Zotovich vineyards grow not only award winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (Burgundy grapes) but also Syrah, Grenache and Viognier (Rhone varietals). It takes special soil and a special talent to coax the nuances out of these very different varietals, and

MICHAEL GILL CELLARS An essential part of any visit to Michael Gill Cellars is the drive on Peachy Canyon Road, a meandering journey through an oakcanopied swath of Adelaida on the westside of Paso Robles. “Out here, you can see wild turkeys, deer and foxes,” said Michael, owner and winemaker. “It’s California as it was 100 years ago. In those days, it took a half-day to reach town in a covered wagon and another half-day to get back. Jesse James hid all throughout these hills.” Michael grew up in the foothills of the San Joaquin Valley, where, “Taft was all oil wells, beer, and bourbon,” he grinned. Science was second nature to Michael, but he wanted to do something other than work in the oilfields. Instead, he chose dental school at Fresno State University. Ironically, it was his college lab partner who opened a new world of food and wine. He later established his Bakersfield dental practice and became versed in Napa and Sonoma wines. Intrigued with the wine industry’s growing interest in Paso Robles, Michael planted Syrah grapes on a 15-acre parcel purchased in 1977 that was fortuitously nestled in a prime grape-growing region. One of Paso Robles’ most respected winemakers, Robert Nadeau, was instrumental in helping Michael lay out his field. “It was everything I wanted,” he affirmed. Michael is also appreciative of the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area (IGGPRA), which assists growers with collaborative resources and expertise to help ensure that their members’ crops will thrive. Michael’s grapevines are dry-farmed, a method that saves water, encourages roots to tap into needed moisture, forces the grapes to absorb aspects of minerality from the soil, and intensifies flavor in the fruit.
GOLD MEDAL WINNERS The flagships at Michael Gill Cellars are the Tempranillo and “Black Tie” Syrah wines, but his other vintages are gaining in prestige and popularity. Currently, the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Syrah vintages are available for tasting. In competition, Michael has been especially blessed. In 2018, his wines earned 20 gold medals, followed by 20 more in 2019.
22
1219 CC.indd 22
One of the most exceptional standouts is his 2018 Counoise. “Counoise grapes are a lovely, Rhône-style varietal,” said Michael. “It won seven gold medals, including a doublegold medal and 99 points at the California State Fair Wine Competition. This is a beautiful summer red wine. It’s phenomenal with holiday foods, such as sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and marshmallows, and it’s one that everybody likes.” His 2017 “Black Tie” Alicante Bouschet “is an old-time California grape that fell by the wayside during Prohibition,” Michael explained. “It’s an elegant wine with layer after layer of flavors and a long-lasting finish.” A hybridized Grenache and Petit Bouschet grape, Alicante Bouschet is lively with warm berries, toast and chocolatecovered raisins. Michael is especially proud of his 2018 vintage, which is perfect for cellaring. The 2017 and 2018 Primitivo are also being poured in the tasting room. “Pair it with charcuterie and desserts, like berry cobbler. It’s stunning and well balanced,” said Michael. Picnics are welcome on the tasting room deck, which includes a breathtaking view of hillsides graced with oaks overlooking the vineyard below. On occasion, friends stop by for an impromptu concert that delight his guests – a perfect setting in which to enjoy Michael’s award-winning wines.
MICHAEL GILL CELLARS WINE CLUB Three times per year, Michael Gill’s finest offerings are delivered to wine club members at a 20% discount. SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY
More than 200 wineries produce critically acclaimed vintages in Paso Robles, Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley. Visitors can head out along the gorgeous country roads to sip their way through the vineyards.
San Luis Obispo’s unusual natural beauty, along with its gentle climate, first attracted the Spanish padres to the area in the 1700s. In 1772, they built the fifth of California’s 21 missions

here, on the banks of San Luis Creek, and named it Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today, many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions.
t’s no wonder the people here call it SLO. No one is in any hurry in the cafes or on the sidewalks, and certainly no one is in any rush to leave. Strangers are genuinely friendly, always ready to talk about their favorite hiking trail or barbecue joint, or to point the way to the winery with the best Pinot Noir. It’s all part of the SLO life, that combination of good stuff that makes visiting here so nourishing to the soul.

Perfect Wine Pairings from Riboli Family Wine Estates for Your Holiday Feast Whether you are hosting a large group for the holidays, or a small, intimate gathering, San Simeon and Maddalena wines present the perfect pairings for any table. Both collections offer a variety of food-friendly artisan wines that pair beautifully with a variety of holiday classics. For dinner tables that typically feature heartier options, such as prime rib, San Simeon 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is the ideal candidate. San Simeon 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon offers bright aromas of dark raspberry and black cherry. Ripe flavors of spicy plum and currant are complemented by nuances of cocoa and cedar oak from barrel-aging. Structured tannins provide texture and a lengthy finish, allowing San Simeon Cabernet Sauvignon to stand up to a hearty red meat. If you’re looking for a superb white wine, San Simeon 2017 Chardonnay offers a rich, mouth-filled wine with ripe tropical fruit flavors and complements of citrus and pear. This structured and well-balanced wine shows a lengthy finish that works subtly alongside freshly sliced turkey breast and will easily complement all other side dishes. Chardonnay is also well known as an excellent choice for a first course pairing. The Maddalena 2016 Chardonnay is no exception. This wine greets the nose with an array of ripe fruit aromas, including citrus, guava, and orange peel. The round mouth shows depth and body, complemented by forward flavors of tropical fruit. A touch of spicy oak adds complexity. Balanced acidity creates structure and a long, complex finish making it a fitting selection for a leafy green salad with cranberries, pecans, and green apples, for example. For dinner tables featuring a variety of side dishes, look no further than the Maddalena 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine

shows ripe red fruit, including raspberry, plum, and spicy black cherry. Barrel aging contributes notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak spice. The mouth is round with a rich, silky texture framed by soft tannins, making it pair exquisitely with any red meat, or sides and condiments, such as cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and green bean casserole.

Wines of the West Tasting Room Debuts in Paso Robles Paso Robles’ newest tasting location offers guests an atypical place to sample wine from four different brands
The Central Coast’s newest wine hideout, Wines of the West, is officially open along scenic Highway 46 West in Paso Robles. This maverick outpost is unique in that it allows guests to taste a wide variety of wines in one unconventional location. Wines of the West will be joined at the site by fellow rebel rousers, Heirloom restaurant, who have decided to set down roots at the location and will be serving their California farm fresh food seven days a week. Wines of the West is a new frontier of tasting rooms, designed to feel like two distinct tasting experiences. The front area provides a more traditional setting, serving Clayhouse Wines and Purple Cowboy. The back area, known as the CAN-tina, is a more casual and eclectic tasting space, focused on serving canned wines from If You See Kay and Alloy. Grapes for all four brands are sourced exclusively from Paso Robles AVA (with the exception of the Purple Cowboy sparkling wine) and crafted by a team of local winemakers committed to showcasing the best of the area. Wine choices include Rhône varietals from Clayhouse Wines, where the focus
is on small-bin fermentations. Not to be missed is the Petite Sirah, made from the oldest such vines on the Central Coast. Purple Cowboy focuses on Bordeaux varietals and pays homage to the true winemaker rodeo cowboys. Legend has it that their teeth were stained purple

from tasting as they crafted their blends. If You See Kay wines are an ode to the unconventional, focusing on nontraditional varietals in cans and bottles. This unorthodox brand is paired in the CAN-tina with Alloy Wine Works. Bringing together edgy blends and unique lots that are hand harvested, Alloy is canned wine that reflects the inventive spirit of Paso Robles. Wines of the West Wines of the West is a wine tasting collective located along the picturesque Highway 46 in Paso Robles, owned by the prestigious Vintage Wine Estates. Wines of the West’s collection of four wine brands includes Clayhouse Wines, an ode to the clayhouse relics of Paso Robles’ pioneering past and producer of Rhône varietals; Bordeaux-focused Purple Cowboy, a tribute to the purpleteethed cowboy winemakers of another era; If You See Kay, producer of nontraditional varietals that veer away from the status quo; and Alloy Wine Works, maker of unique, small-lot canned wines. Wines of the West is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m, and is located at 3750 Highway 46, Paso Robles, CA 93446. You can find them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or visit the website at pasowinesofthewest.com.

Rich in multicultural history, indigenous Chumash settlers and Spain’s famous Portola Expedition of the Central Coast were followed by homesteading Swiss-Italian dairyman, Danish, Scotch, Irish and English settlers, Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, Filipino and Mexican farmers and workers. Steeped in the traditions of their families, city pioneers arrived and nurtured the area. Their efforts later became immortalized on street surnames, businesses, schools and even Santa Maria-style BBQ. There’s plenty of sunshine for sightseeing and winery visiting, but dress in layers. Late afternoon breezes arrive like clockwork to cool the vines that provide for Santa Maria’s most impressive wines.

Santa Ynez Valley Holiday Season – A Most Special Time of Year in The Santa Ynez Valley With family-friendly festivities such as Julefest, and holiday cheer spread throughout the Santa Ynez Valley, the wine country of California’s Central Coast comes alive each year to celebrate the season.
FIGUEROA MTN
The best holiday traditions are not contrived … they are born and celebrated over generations. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Santa Ynez Valley, where the holidays always bring joy with celebrations that are unique to the region and perfected over time. With more than 100 wineries and a prolific farm-to-table culinary scene, the wine country of California’s central coast is known for so much. But few traditions in the Santa Ynez Valley are as beloved as Julefest (pronounced yule-fest), Solvang’s month-long holiday celebration that has long put the popular Danish-American hamlet among the “Most Christmassy Towns in America.” This year, events such as the Aurora Dronealis — a choreographed show featuring hundreds of lighted and autonomous drones — Christmas Market Light Show, and the new Saint Lucia Day parade will add freshness to old favorites. The Santa Ynez Valley is also known for the diversity and charm SAN MAR COS PASS RD of all six of its communities, 154 and it shows with each unique holiday

event. Nostalgia thrives during the Los Olivos Olde Fashioned Christmas, and a white Christmas is certain even in the mild climate of the Santa Ynez Valley when 20 tons of snow are piled high for all to enjoy at Buellton Winter Fest. Foodie haven Los Alamos celebrates with a Holiday Stroll, and Santa Ynez invites the whole community each year to light the largest Christmas tree in the region. “Even as the Santa Ynez Valley’s profile as an international wine and food destination has grown, its communities have managed to preserve their many small-town charms,” said Shelby Sim, president and CEO of Visit Santa Ynez Valley. “Those charms are a key component of what makes the holiday season in the Santa Ynez Valley so special. The festivities are authentic and integrated into the community. But the Santa Ynez Valley also welcomes visitors with open arms to come celebrate alongside locals. It truly makes for a joyous atmosphere befitting the season.”

The Santa Ynez Valley calendar is full of holiday festivals and events throughout the season. Some of those highlights include: Solvang Julefest No town celebrates the holidays quite like Solvang. All through December this authentic Danish-American hamlet celebrates the season with Julefest, and there is nothing quite like it. The annual tradition will even bring a little extra light this year with the Christmas Market Light Show every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in December and the Aurora Dronealis on Dec. 21, a first-ever event that will feature hundreds of lighted and autonomous drones working together in perfect harmony. The season begins with the season-long Nisse Adventure, which invites families to come to Solvang and hunt for the Jule Nisse, mischievous elf-like Danish figures hidden throughout town. Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit Santa Village in Solvang Park on Dec. 7, 14, and 21, dates that will also include free candlelight tours (Dec. 8, 15, and 22). The whole community will celebrate the annual tree lighting on Dec. 6, which will be followed by the Solvang Julefest Parade and after-parade children’s performance on Dec. 7. The new Saint Lucia Day celebration parade will be held on Dec. 13. The Skal Stroll Wine & Beer Walk (Dec. 14-15) is a festive event that could only happen in Solvang, and the season is never over until the annual tree burn on Jan. 3.
Santa Ynez Small Town Christmas and Christmas Tree Lighting Sunday, Dec. 1, from 4-6 p.m. Santa Ynez offers a most festive way to kick off the holiday season with a free, community-wide event. Santa Claus always pays a visit, and both he and the revelers are met with an evening that includes live entertainment, holiday treats and crafts. The celebration ends on a high note with the annual lighting of the Santa Ynez Christmas tree, which is typically the largest in the area.
Los Olivos Olde Fashioned Christmas Saturday, Dec. 7, from noon-7 p.m. The holiday cheer extends into downtown Los Olivos, where the quaintness of the local tasting rooms, boutiques, and galleries are met with a traditional holiday celebration that is beloved by all generations. The Gingerbread Wonderland at St. Mark’s In-The-Valley Episcopal Church‚ featuring gingerbread houses decorated by schoolchildren and local artists, is sure to put anyone in the holiday spirit. The holiday market is filled with seasonal artisan crafts as Christmas music fills the air. Children will love a visit from Santa and a train ride at Lavinia Park. And everyone gathers at the end of the day for the official lighting of the Los Olivos Christmas Tree.
Buellton Winter Fest Sunday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Who says it doesn’t snow in the Santa Ynez Valley? For one day every December in Buellton, wine country transforms into a winter wonderland with some 20 tons of snow trucked in and piled high. The day begins with Breakfast with Santa and then moves to Buellton’s snowy Winter Fest Village, where revelers will also find local food and holiday libations. The day finishes with Buellton’s official tree lighting ceremony.
TASTING ROOMS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC TASTING ROOMS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY BREWERIES DISTILLERIES
Los Alamos Holiday Stroll & Tree Lighting Friday, Dec. 14, 4-8 p.m. Los Alamos will deck downtown with holiday cheer during the Los Alamos Holiday Stroll. The festivities begin with a visit from Santa followed by the annual tree lighting at Ferrini Park. It won’t be hard to find the way to Bell Street, which will be lit with luminarias as Christmas carols fill the air. Each unique Los Alamos business offers something to be discovered in a festive holiday atmosphere, including music, holiday cookies, letters-to-Santa stationary table, and a showing of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas at The Alamo. For more information, or to research events and attractions, book lodging and activities, and create a custom travel itinerary, visit visitsyv.com. The Santa Ynez Valley is home to six distinct towns each with their own culture, vibe and menu of experiences. Blanketed with fruitful farms and vineyards, the California Central Coast wine region’s temperate weather allows for year-round activities of all sorts, spread throughout the historical communities of Ballard, Buellton, Los Alamos, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez and Solvang. Destination dining and world-class wines await, accompanied by lodging at every level, all painted into atmospheric backdrops which colorfully mesh Old World and Old West. Visit more than 100 wineries, feast on chef-driven cuisine, and enjoy festive events and design details from Victorian-era to mid-century to modern Danish. For more information, including a listing of wedding venues, restaurants, wineries, tasting rooms and 101 events, go to VisitSYV.com.

Ventura County Sun, Sand, History and Wine Fun! “Ventura Highway in the sunshine, where the days are longer, the nights are stronger than the moonshine, you’re gonna go I know.”* What better reason to go than to spend a rambling day (or two) along the Ventura 101 Freeway (or King’s Highway), from Camarillo to the seaside town of Ventura, (named after Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782), sipping wines, enjoying the sunshine and drive as you meet winemakers in their welcoming, friendly tasting rooms.
haven to come, sit, sip and relax with old and new friends alike, while sampling their assortment of hand crafted award winning wines. On Friday evenings (between 5:00-8:00pm) you can accompany your tasting with a gourmet cheese platter or small bites as you “time travel” to this Italian retreat, even if just for a few hours. Less than 10 minutes from Magnavino, you’ll arrive at Four Brix Winery in Ventura. Step into this fun, funky tasting roomwinery to savor wines made from grapes that are an homage to four great grape regions: Italy, France, Spain and California. Offering a “tapas menu” to accompany your wine tasting, Four Brix is a special “community.” Live concerts and special events are a constant at Four Brix---the fun never stops here. A few blocks from Four Brix is Panaro Brothers Winery. Being fifth generation Italian-American winemakers, the four Panaro Brothers offer a wide selection of mostly single-varietal wines, grapes sourced from vineyards stretching from Monterey through the Central Coast. You will be warmly welcomed into “la famiglia,” so come sit, sip and enjoy a selection of Italian style wines – once you do you will return often. As we cruise into spring and summer, plan some daytrips to the many unique tasting rooms throughout Ventura County. Please check individual websites for hours of operation, (most being open 3-4 days a week). *Lyrics from Ventura Highway, by America. >> DON SONDERLING
So Many Tasting Rooms—Not Enough Time (nut plenty of wine) With more than 20 tasting rooms to choose from, the Camarillo-Ventura corridor is less than a two-hour drive from central Orange County, and an hour or less from greater Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Enjoy the fruitful bounty of what Ventura County has to offer – you won’t be disappointed.
Four Not to Miss Travelling north on the 101 toward Ventura, you may want to make your first stop at Herzog Wine Cellars, in Oxnard. Though a well-known larger winery, Herzog (producing Kosher wines), has a fascinating history, and includes in their line-up smaller lot, limited edition and premium wines. Take the self-guided tour which is educational and fascinating. Magnavino Cellars, is a mile down the road from Herzog. Entering, you will feel transported into a delightful Italian wine country getaway. Robert and Barbara Wagner have created a

They produce wines based upon their favorite grape growing regions: Italy, France, Spain and California. The word “brix” is a term for measurement of sugar in grapes; therefore, Four Brix equal four sweet spots for great wine! With a total production around 1,500 cases, these wines are very limited and in high demand.

Celebrating Central Coast Cannabis The normalization of the laid-back cannabis lifestyle will be in full swing this holiday season. As friends and family gather to celebrate, cannabis may very well be on the menu. And, just like someone who shows up with a good bottle of wine or spirits or homemade treats, someone may show up with a cannabis homewarming gift. Maybe it will be a little plant for your garden or a pre-rolled joint from your guest’s favorite dispensary or a plate of holiday cookies infused with homegrown sativa. Yummy. But wait. All of this is still so new and perhaps a little, if not very much – uncomfortable. Let’s think this through together. When you are planning your holiday party, take time to think about what cannabis activities may take place and get prepared. First, if a guest should show up with a cannabis gift, you are under no obligation to light it up or eat it or share it with the rest of the party. Simply say, “thank-you,” and tuck it away to enjoy when you are ready. Or direct your guest to place his or her gift on the “canna-bar” to be accessible to guests who might be interested. Just like the alcohol bar you set up for your guests with an assortment of adult beverage, glasses, ice, mixers, corkscrews, napkins, and garnishes, a canna-bar is an easy creation for your holiday festivities. Is there a place in your home where guests can enjoy a smoke? Partaking of the weed is no longer a reason to hide in the garage or behind the hedge. Set up a comfortable outdoor seating area with gentle ocean breezes to clear the air, be sure to set out ash trays. Your canna-bar set up may also include: lighters, rolling papers, a clean bong or small pipe. A dish of peppermints or
40

lemon drops to clear the palate would be a nice touch. Display and label any cannabis edibles with clear warnings regarding ingredients, potency, and portion control rules. Here are a few basic and important rules of high-life enjoyment. Start slow. Always have a soft landing. Enjoy the high. Be respectful of nature and people. If cannabis doesn’t agree with you, don’t imbibe. Travel safely with designated drivers and guides. And, of course, be mindful of safety for children, teens, and pets. If you have never cooked up a cannabis dish to serve to your family or guests, this year would be an excellent time to give it a try. The easiest way to begin is to infuse butter, coconut oil, or olive oil with your fresh or dried cannabis flowers buds and sweet leaves. There are many methods at your disposal: slow cooking in crock pots, simmering in a skillet, or if you’re really serious about making new traditions and regularly adding cannabis edibles to your menu, think about purchasing a Magical Butter machine (https://www.magicalbutter.com). Cannabis-infused oils can be made in advanced and will keep in the fridge for weeks or the freezer for months. From dressings to desserts cannabis-infused food choices are a perfect addition to feasting and merriment. Cannabis-infused butter, coconut and olive oil can be added to just about any holiday recipe as a substitute for regular butter or oil. Keep it simple.
Dulcie Sinn, Ph.D. Cha Cha Cooking Club President and Cannabis Educator. After waiting 50 years for Cannabis legislation to open minds to this truly remarkable plant. Let the research commence. Dr. Sinn’s work emphasizes healthy families energetically engaging in home gardening, cooking, and conversation. Nick Sinn-White, Cannabis Consultant. 15 plus years-experience working with and within the medical cannabis community from Santa Barbara to Sonoma to Los Angeles. He has marched with Ed Rosenthal through the Oakland streets and smoked at art galleries with Cheech. Nick has passionately lectured on the need for safe access, patients-rights and the decriminalization of Cannabis. It's these experiences, moments, and knowledge that energizes his desire to educate and participate on the frontlines of social and cultural change impacting the Central Coast community. Ganja Grandé Dame, Cannabis Personal Chef, answered her calling to serve patients during the HIV/AIDS epidemic 30 years ago. Her home-made cannabis edibles, salves, and tinctures help patients living with a wide variety of medical issues. She is a self-taught kitchen expert on cooking fearlessly. For information on Speaking Engagements to inform, inspire, and entertain contact Dr. Sinn (805) 735-1002.
Mix up a batch of your favorite holiday cookies or candies. ’Tis the season to be jolly and with the long cold starry nights the smell of fresh-baked cookies is welcoming and comforting. The Ganja Grandé Dame reports that she has already stocked her freezer with snickerdoodles and two kinds of chocolate cookies to enjoy or share. Her advice for palate pleasing pleasure is to use strong flavors such as chocolate, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, ginger, vanilla, and lemon. Warm up a plate to pass around and start the family games. Charades, Pictionary, Trivia, or Worse Case Scenario are sure to be crazy fun when a little loaded. Imbibing during the holidays should be fun, safe, and a bit silly, seriously. Enjoy.
