ZACA MESA WINERY & VINEYARDS THEN AND NOW

When Zaca Mesa Winery was established in 1973, they were only the third winery in Santa Barbara County. This fledgling winery, through trial and error, experimentation and risk, became a leader in the development and vision of Santa Barbara wine country. Never having lost focus of their pioneering spirit and leadership role, Zaca Mesa continues to innovate – producing highly rated, award-winning wines – and serving them in an inviting, enjoyable setting.

A Complete Experience – From then to Now What do you want when you go wine tasting: Good wines, a comfortable setting, friendly and knowledgeable personnel, fun, and a short escape from the “real” world? Whatever your goal is, Zaca Mesa offers it all … and more. When we talk about a tasting experience, it is no understatement that you will be tasting wines of historic significance. Throughout their history, many of the Central Coast’s most esteemed winemakers have headed the Zaca Mesa wine program. Some of these superstars included Ken Brown, Jim Clendenan, and Bob Lindquist … truly “hall of fame” of winemakers. Today, Kristin Bryden, who began at Zaca Mesa in 2011, heads the winemaking team, continuing the rich winemaking tradition of innovation, and producing top tier wines. If you love Rhône varietals, this is a must visit destination, and for Syrah lovers, Zaca Mesa is known as “the house of Syrah.” In the early years, many “common” varieties were planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot to name a few. Then, in 1978, Syrah was planted, which totally changed the face of Zaca Mesa over the years. Today, they grow only Rhône varieties – focusing on Syrah.

10

There are many tasting experiences to choose from. The Mixed Flight focuses on several estate wines (red and white), this flight also includes wines with grapes sourced from leading vineyards in Santa Barbara County. The Red Flight is nirvana for red wine lovers. The current assortment of Rhônes will take you on a journey from Grenache, to Mourvedre, a beautiful Rhône blend, ending with two of Zaca Mesa’s most renown Syrahs. The tasting assortments change frequently, so you may be assured when you return, there will be new experiences to look forward to. And, you will always be greeted with typical Zaca Mesa smiles and hospitality.

A Bold Step Forward As the early winemakers of Zaca Mesa stepped outside the proverbial box, moving away from more recognized grape varieties, switching to Rhône varietals, winemaker Kristin Bryden has taken a bold new approach into the future of winemaking, with the recent Recusant* project. As Kristin states: “The Recusant project was born of our quest to create the purest expression of Rhône varietal wines from our vineyard.” This venture features identical Grenache and Mourvedre blends, aged in three totally different types of containers: Terracotta amphorae (initially used by Romans over 2000 years ago for winemaking), Italian concrete wine tanks, and 60 gallon neutral oak barrels. Even though the juice and ageing process is the same, each of these vessels produce a unique, distinctive style of wine. For the curious wine lover, exploring the wines of the Recusant series is exciting, and a true adventure in taste. *Recusant: Unorthodox, non-conformist

This is the oldest Syrah clone on the Central Coast, known as the Black Bear Block. • In addition to the groundbreaking Recusant series, winemaker Kristin Bryden is proud of her “Homage series.” Grapes are sourced from esteemed vineyards, these wines are a tribute to many of the original varieties initially grown at Zaca Mesa • Awards-Awards-Awards The 1993 Zaca Mesa Syrah was the fi rst Central Coast wine to be named on Wine Spectator’s “top ten.” Recent scores: From Antonio Galloni: 2016: Inceptive & Eight Barrel Syrah (92), Chapel G Syrah & Clydesdale (93), Estate Syrah (94). Visit – Sip – Relax You will find so many welcoming characteristics on your visit to Zaca Mesa, that to truly appreciate them, you must take your time when you visit. The large tasting room is comfortable and welcoming. However, on a beautiful fall day, you may want to sit outside on the patio, sipping, and playing a game of giant chess. For a more in depth tasting experience, consider a winery tour and tasting. And, for the wine geek among you, The Vineyard Experience is simply, NOT to be missed. Your visit to Zaca Mesa Winery will be a fun adventure: A look to the past – a sip of the present – and a window to the future of Zaca Mesa, and Santa Barbara wines. >> BY DON SONDERLING

LINCOURT WINERY FUN FACTS

To truly appreciate the delicate nuances of wines from the cooler climate Sta. Rita hills area, Lincourt is the place to go. Focusing mainly on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, you will be able to compare how grapes, and therefore wines, are affected by micro-climates within this AVA. But, don’t stop there. Lincourt also offers a (not so common) Grüner Veltliner, in addition to an elegant Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a distinctive winery in an idyllic setting where you can come, sip, explore, and delight in savoring the best of Santa Barbara County wines.

• Family comes first: “Lincourt” combines the names of Bill Foley’s daughters, Lindsay and Courtney. Additionally, many of the wines are named after influential women in Bill Foley’s life. • Environmentally responsible, Lincourt practices sustainable methods in farming and winemaking. • Accompany your tasting experience with a gourmet cheese pairing, charcuterie board, or picnic lunch (order 48 hours in advance). • Under winemaker Lorna Kreutz, Lincourt wines consistently earn high scores, among them, (from Wine Enthusiast): - 2014 Rancho Santa Rosa Pinot Noir (93) - 2016 Rancho Santa Rosa Chardonnay (90) - 2014 Two Sisters Chardonnay (94) - 2014 Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills (93) - 2014 Chardonnay, Sta. Rita Hills (93) - 2016 Two Sisters Pinot Noir Reserve Sta. Rita Hills (95) Check the website for upcoming events and experiences, especially the Open House on December 7 … perfectly paired bites matched with a selection of Lincourt’s ultra-premium wines, reflecting the best of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA.

And That’s Not All Did you know that Lincourt is one of several select properties under the Foley Family umbrella? Membership in the Foley Food & Wine Society offers special benefits at each of their elite twenty properties in California, Oregon or Washington state, including invitations to some very special events. – Getting to Know –

SPARKLING WINES The joyful “pop” when opening a bottle of sparkling wine is a universal sound associated with celebration, success and special occasions. Quite simply, it’s a party in a bottle in more ways than one. — BY STEPHANIE CULEN —

P

robably the most familiar sparkling wine is Champagne. And yet, all sparkling wine is not Champagne. Champagne is named after an historic province in the northeast of France. It is a wine made with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier or a combination of these grape varieties. Referring to sparkling wine as Champagne from any other region in the world is illegal; and yet, there are some exceptions, namely in California, where this law does not apply. Because of a loop-hole in an ageold naming war in Europe that happened to be somewhat resolved during the time of Prohibition in the United States, some California sparkling wine producers may use the distinction of California Champagne to the chagrin of many French producers. All other countries in the world must call their sparkling wine as such, and denote the region or country of origin where the wine was produced and with no reference to Champagne. Other sparkling wines throughout the world have earned equal

Courtesy of California Wine Institute

recognition over the years such as the Italian favorites Prosecco, Lambrusco and Franciacorta, the Spanish Cava and the German Sekt. The difference between these sparkling wines is mainly the grape variety used in its viniculture, as well as its country of origin. Spanish Cava may be white or rosé and is made from Macabeo, Parellada or Xarello grapes. Italian Prosecco is made from the Glera grape which is native to the Veneto region of Italy. German Sekt can be produced from Riesling, Silvaner, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. The distinguishing quality of sparkling wine is bubbles. To create wine with bubbles, the grapes go through a process of carbonation using one of a couple of methods. One method is known as Méthode Champenoise, or Classic, or Traditional Method, discovered in Champagne, France. This is a style of sparkling wine where the second fermentation process happens within the bottle. Generally speaking, this method produces drier, less fruit-forward wines with the longest lasting bubbles. This is the method typically used for the fine wines of French Champagne, Spanish Cava, American sparkling wine and Italian Franciacorta. The other method is called the Charmat method which is used to make lighter sparkling wines like Italy’s Prosecco and Lambrusco. With the Charmat method, the second fermentation process happens in a tank and then the carbonated wine is bottled. This method produces wines that are younger and fruitier with bigger, more explosive bubbles.

get the dirt Understanding terroir and its influences In France, the viticulture for producing sparkling wine in relationship to grape variety, grape-growing techniques, wine production and the regulation of maturation is dictated by the region’s laws called the Appellation d’Origine Controlee (AOC). This also is the same for sparkling wines from Spain where the grape variety used and its yields are regulated by the government. In other sparkling wine areas of the world there is less regulation. Grapes grown for sparkling wine production have a slightly different profile than regular table wine. The principle fruit qualities for sparkling wine include lower sugar concentration, higher acidity and lower pH levels. These are the factors taken into consideration when determining harvest dates for sparkling wine grapes. Harvest is also typically much earlier than regular table wines. Ideal growing conditions are located all over the world depending on the grape variety chosen and its origin. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, for example are classically cooler-climate grape varieties. In hotter regions like Spain, the grapes of Parellada, Xarello and Macabeo fare better.

swirl, sniff, sip, savor What to look for in the glass Generally speaking, if the bottle pops, it’s a sparkling wine. A sparkling wine made only from white grapes, and typically Chardonnay, is called a “Blanc de Blancs” and a sparkling wine made only from dark-skinned grapes, typically Pinot Noir, is called “Blanc de Noirs”. Depending on the kind of wine opened and the kind of grape variety used in the winemaking, there are several different notes to play with when tasting sparkling wines. All of the grape varieties used in sparkling wine contribute individual attributes to the finished wine. For example, Chardonnay offers elegance and finesse with notes of yellow apple, citrus and pear, yeasty brioche and toast with a touch of delicate honeysuckle or chamomile. Pinot Noir gives body to a sparkling wine and offers orange and red fruit flavors and subtle herbaceousness. Pinot Meunier delivers richness, fruitiness and more roundness on the palate. Prosecco is fresh and bright green apple and zesty lemon with gardenia sprinkled in a honey-like palate. In addition, when looking at the color of sparkling wines, there is the spectrum of pale yellow to bright pink to harvest coral. Each color hints at the grape variety used in the wine’s production. On the palate, sparkling wines have little tannic content with subtle finishes. And then, of course, there are the bubbles.

What’s in a glass The classic Champagne flute is a clear signal for a celebration. This is the perfect glass shape to display the wine’s effervescence. Contrary to popular choice, however, the shape of the flute is not the most ideal glass for enjoying the subtleties and aromas of sparkling wine. A glass with a bigger opening is becoming more popular. The more a sparkling wine can breathe, the fruitier and more expansive it becomes. Ultimately, it’s a personal choice, and there are several options, including a simple Burgundy glass, that can serve the different expressions of the wine quite nicely.

pairing sparkling like a pro There are many wonderful things about pairing sparkling wine with food. Mainly, it goes fantastically with just about everything you can imagine and with every course in a meal. Sparkling wines pair well with all taste profiles from sweet to sour to salty to spicy, but make sure you are buying the kind of sparkling wine that suits your taste and your dish. When choosing a sparkling wine there are several determining factors to getting what you want and pairing the wine. One is understanding the wine’s sweetness level. Sparkling wines have a wide variance of sweetness ranging from no, or very little sweetness, to very sweet dessert-like sparkling wine. Reading a sparkling wine’s label for it’s sweetness level, however, can be a bit confusing. A label with the subheading of “brut” means there is little to no residual sugar in the wine; and, a label of “ dry” on the bottle means there are more residual sugar levels. Brut Sparkling Wine is probably the most popular wine. It is dry, but there is a hint of sweetness. In this wine, the fermentation process was stopped just before the yeast ate all of the sugar leaving just a bit behind in the wine. Some quintessential favorite pairings with Brut Sparkling Wine include raw oysters, mussels and caviar, or foods that have an earthy or salty nature, as well as every kind of cheese imaginable from feta to brie to manchego to gorgonzola cheeses. Many Bruts also pair beautifully with Italian food, especially the creamy and tomato sauces that accompany rich pasta dishes, as well as poultry and cured meats. Sparkling wines also accompany almost all vegetable dishes made in any style nicely with the exception of mushrooms. Extra Dry Sparkling Wine retains more sweetness but is still not sugary sweet. Prosecco is usually made Extra Dry, as well as Rosé Sparkling wine and are good choices with fried foods such as french fries, fried calamari and a wide variety of cheeses that usually accompany dessert. The sweetest sparkling wines will be labeled Demi-Sec and Doux and these are usually paired with desserts. Sweet wines and sweet desserts work best, like fresh fruits, sorbets and chocolates. Basically, when in doubt, open a bottle of bubbles. It will turn an everyday moment into a cause for celebration.

BUCKWHEAT BLINIS WITH CAVIAR What could be more festive than Blinis with Caviar? This is a simple recipe and you can customize by adding smoked salmon, capers, onions or any number of your favorite toppings. Courtesy of Palmina Wines. INGREDIENTS: *Makes approximately 50 blinis. • 1 ½ tsp sugar • ¼ cup warm water • 1 ½ tsp active dry yeast • 1 egg • 1 ½ cups lukewarm milk • 1 cup flour • ½ tsp baking powder • ¾ cup buckwheat flour • ½ tsp salt • ¼ cup butter, melted METHOD: In a bowl, dissolve ½ tsp of the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle in yeast; let stand until frothy, about 10 minutes. In a separate bowl, beat egg, milk and remaining sugar. Add flour, baking powder and salt; beat for 1 minute. Beat in yeast mixture and half of the butter. Cover with plastic wrap; let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Heat nonstick skillet over medium heat; brush lightly with some of the remaining butter. Without stirring, spoon batter into pan with barely 2 tablespoonfuls of batter to make a 2 ¼" blini. Cook until bubbles form on top that do not fill in, about 1 minute. Turn and cook until bottoms are golden, about 30 seconds. Finish with a dollop of caviar and serve with your favorite sparkling wine such as Palmina Sparkling Barbera, Santa Barbara County. Wine Country This Month: Central Coast

STEPHEN ROSS WINE CELLARS At Stephen Ross Wine Cellars in San Luis Obispo, Starting with the Best Fruit to Create Fabulous, Small-Production Vintages is what this Winery is All About.

A reliable Midwestern work ethic, attention to detail, estategrown grapes, and fruit harvested from some of the best vineyards in the Edna Valley and south Central Coast all merge to create a quality product that visitors can taste in the glass. INSIDE THE TASTING ROOM “In our urban location, our tasting room is never overrun by crowds,” said Paula Dooley (Stephen Ross Dooley’s wife). “Customers are assured of getting an intimate and engaging experience with our small staff. The barrels are steps away, and you can visit the cellar where the wines are made. You can stand at the bar, or retreat to comfortable seating for privacy, and enjoy a flight of Stephen Ross wines or wine by the glass.” Featured wine releases for the season include Stephen Ross’s 2016 Pinot Noir, “Arete” (ahr-it-tey’), meaning the pinnacle of something or the highest level of virtue or excellence. “As our Stone Corral estate vineyard has matured since being planted in 2001, the blocks and clones have really begun to express themselves in unique and amazing ways,” Paula said. “We have seen this developing in recent vintages and decided to carve

out the Arete in 2016 to really highlight the best from the vineyard. The grapes were hand-harvested and sorted in the cool of night. Non-fined and non-filtered, we aged the wine for 18 months in French oak barrels.” Also pouring in the tasting room this summer are Stephen Ross’s 2016 Pinot Noir, Stone Corral Vineyard ($60), the 2017 Albariño, Spanish Springs Vineyard ($25), and the 2016 Chardonnay, Edna Valley ($28). SUSTAINABLE FARMING Stone Corral Vineyard in Edna Valley supplies 100 percent of their estate-grown grapes for Stephen Ross wines. The rest is sourced from premium parcels within the Central Coast AVA, throughout San Luis Obispo County’s Edna Valley, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands, and Paso Robles. A conscientious effort to maintain sustainability practices and surrounding themselves with future leaders of their industry is a priority. “We have a great cellar crew of Cal Poly University Wine and Viticulture grads and students,” said Paula. “Our vineyards, estate and contracted, are either SIP Certified or Certified

Organic. For example, we laid down a band of organic mulch six inches deep under the vines to suppress weed growth and hold moisture in the soil. We do what we can to be good stewards of the environment.” BEHIND THE SCENES AT STEPHEN ROSS In addition to producing their Stephen Ross and Flying Cloud wine brands, Stephen and Paula do custom crush work. Steve’s decades of experience and a proven track record informs his wine production consultation for a handful other wineries. “They use their own grape sources, styles to strive for, and sales plans,” said Paula. “We step in to turn their grapes into the wines

Spa at Allegretto the Allegretto. We want guests to feel connected to their space, to the past, and to one another, whether they understand the mechanics of it or not.” Rich in symbolism, the compass rose fountain at the entrance signifies the cardinal point from which to begin one’s journey. In the lobby, pulverized marble walls meet a fiber optic chandelier in view of the ceiling painted with seven-string lyres that represent heavenly awakening many wisdom traditions. A nearby cross-section of a fallen giant Sequoia provides the visible timeline of human and natural history. Within its rings include chronological references to the Great Wall of China, birth of Christ and two world wars. Inside, a grand fireplace and twin staircases accented with black wrought iron and sculptural muses invite exploration. The fountain centered within the 12,000-square-foot Piazza Magica is natural river stone from China and represents the womb of creation and connectedness between heaven and earth. In the East Garden, the Romeo and Juliet Tunnel represents the unity of families joined by marriage. Tailored landscaping, a stone fireplace and a cozy sitting area tempt visitors to linger for a glass and a chat in view of tiled roofs, plastered walls and mission-style arches. Other artistic highlights on the property include a five-foot stone polished to a beautiful sheen by river waters over 5,000 years, courtesy of a river in India, a towering Siddhartha statue and the Virgin of Guadalupe.

9th Annual California Garagiste Festival, November 8-10 From Then (2011) till Now! About a decade ago, two winemakers, Douglas Minnick and Stewart McLennan, had a vision: They wanted to find a way to introduce small production, boutique wineries to the wine loving public. The Central Coast, Paso Robles in specific, had begun to explode with a new breed of winemakers. Most were young, exciting, experimental, and unrestrained. Being low production, and most without tasting rooms, their only source of exposure was word of mouth. Doug and Stewart conceived an idea for a wine festival dedicated to small production,“garage” (or Garagiste) winemakers, where they would have the opportunity to present their wines directly to the wine loving public. In 2011 this vision became a reality, with the very first Garagiste Wine Festival,“to celebrate the artisan winemaker.”

Time and Place The time and place (Paso Robles) was right. Focusing on winemakers with a maximum production of 1500 cases, the original Garagiste was more than a great event, it put Paso Robles squarely in the spotlight as the area to watch where new winemakers experimented with out of the ordinary blends and varietals. Wineries such as Alta Colina, Caliza, and Nicora (to name just a few) were able to use The Garagiste as a springboard to introduce their wines to wine aficionados. The event has grown from the original forty exhibitors to over seventy … becoming an important annual event. The original exhibitors have helped set the trend for what has become not only one of the premier wine events in the country, but also gives a roadmap for small, start up winemakers to follow in order to realize and live their dream. Today, the Garagiste Festival has expanded to annual events in Paso Robles (the apex of the Central Coast Wine County), Southern California, the Santa Ynez Valley, and more recently, Sonoma.

1119 CC.indd 22

Then and Now Since the original festival with 40 exhibitors, 416 wineries have been discovered. This year’s festival featuring 74 wineries, includes: • 24 new wineries (17 from Paso Robles) • 10 wineries introducing their first vintage • 12 wineries headed by women With the festival’s expansion throughout the state, the popularity, excitement and growth is sure to continue, as are the many awards and accolades, such as: • USA TODAY, 2018 “Reader’s Choice Award” Best Wine Festival • Los Angeles Times: “Tasting nirvana, not to miss.” • ABC News: “One of the top nine incredible epicurean vacations in the world.” • Sunset Magazine: ‘Best of the West,’“Best Festival.” However, what speaks most highly about the accomplishments and future of Garagiste, comes from exhibitors and attendees themselves: • Maggie Tillman, of Alta Colina (an original exhibitor): “The Garagiste Festival is one of our favorite events. It attracts a crowd that’s interested in trying varietals and producers they have never heard of.” • Drew Nenow, from Nenow Family Wines, first time exhibitor in 2019: “The Garagiste Festival is the only event giving the ultraboutique producer a platform to present their wines to serious wine lovers, in a one on one setting. And, for us, in our own backyard!” • David McGee, Monochrome Wines, repeat exhibitor: “We are small production, with a unique and exclusive focus on crafting

exceptional white wines. The Garagiste Festival gives us the opportunity to present our line-up to an enthusiastic, supportive public. We love the Garagiste Festival.” And, from some attendees of many years: • Dana (and Matt Saly) from Woodland Hills: “We have been coming for years, discovering new wines, new winemakers and making many new friends. It’s the one event we won’t miss.” • David Rapaport (and Kathy Garcia) from San Diego: “My wife and I have discovered many creative, talented, winemakers at Garagiste. They think “outside the box,” having a strong passion for wine and an exciting vision. We love watching old discoveries grow and discover new talent each year.” From what was a vision some ten years ago, is today a premier wine event. As Douglas Minnick (himself a Garagiste exhibiting winemaker, with his Hoi Polloi label) says: “Our plan for the future is to continue helping small wineries bring exciting new wines to an audience thirsty for the new and different. A true win-win.” Plan meeting many of these winemakers at The California Garagiste Festival in Paso Robles, California, November 9-10. garagistefestival.com. >> BY DON SONDERLING

Eberle Winery Presents ‘Legacy’ Film Premiere Eberle Winery is proud to premiere a film about Eberle Winery, its owner, and the creation of the Paso Robles AVA. Titled, “ Legacy,” the film dives into the legacy of Gary Eberle, his winery and the making of Paso Robles Wine Country. It will show at the Park Cinemas in Paso Robles on Saturday, November 16th, at 5:30 p.m. starting with a wine reception during the Main Street event Elegant Evening Downtown. “This film has been a year in the making,” says Marcy Eberle, the film’s executive producer. “I can’t tell you how many man hours went into production but it has definitely been a labor of love.” The film’s director and filmmaker, Peter Schroeder agrees. He and his team from Several Guys Production Company put the 45-minute film together using current footage, historic photos and several interviews – all to encompass Eberle’s contribution to Paso Robles Wine Country while examining the past, present and future of this growing Central Coast industry. “This has been a great learning experience for me,” says Schroeder. “I love history and I really appreciate Gary’s unique story as a pioneer of the local wine industry.” Living legacy, man of “firsts,” trailblazer – whatever moniker is used, Gary’s tireless efforts in creating Paso’s wine industry has earned him the deepest respect from veteran winemakers and growers alike. After successfully co-founding Estrella River Winery, Gary pursued his own venture by establishing Eberle Winery – now the oldest family-run winery in Paso Robles. Their flagship wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, was first released in 1979 making it one of the first produced in the region. Other “firsts” include: co-founding the Paso Robles AVA in 1982; first in the country to use the appellation name on their labels; and first commercial producer of a 100% Syrah bottling, becoming a frontrunner in the category by winning

Come visit Calcareous and enjoy the new culinary experience presented by Chef Destiny Shannon, the new Executive Chef at Calcareous Vineyards

CALCAREOUS VINEYARDS AWARD-WINNING WINES, BREATHTAKING VIEWS, AND NEW FOOD & WINE PAIRINGS Calcareous welcomes Chef Destiny Shannon to the winery’s family. She brings to the table her passion for delicious, seasonal, locally grown food along with her extensive knowledge of wine and the wine industry. Growing up on the Central Coast, Destiny has always considered the picturesque westside of Paso Robles her home, with frequent visits to her grandparents’ vineyard here. After graduating from Cuesta College’s Culinary Arts program, she started as a sous chef at Busi’s on the Park in Paso Robles, then moved on to private catering for several wineries after. Her winery experience continued as well as she branched out into Winemaking Lab Science with Meridian Vineyards and Fess Parker Winery, and then as Hospitality Manager of IHG. Food and wine pairings are available every Friday through Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Call for reservations. A MOUNTAINTOP VIEW The father-daughter ownership team of Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown began their dream in 2000 of establishing a winery on a scenic westside mountaintop in Paso Robles. When Lloyd passed in 2006, Dana carried on the mission of making wines that reflect the sense of place that her father had wisely chosen. Situated almost 2,000 feet above Peachy Canyon Road, the

rustically appealing glass-walled and wood-beamed tasting room overlooks the surroundings of the valley. This isn’t a visit to be rushed; instead, it should be lingered upon and savored along with the wine. The hilltop wine tasting room opened in 2008 and was named Lloyd’s Lookout in honor of Lloyd Messer, the winery’s visionary co-founder. Cooled by a series of passes known as Templeton Gap, Calcareous Vineyard benefits from reliable ocean influences that work perfectly together with other Mediterranean characteristics in Paso Robles. Rich in limestone, the Calcareous’ outcropping that tops 442 acres nourish grapes that make for satisfying results. Come enjoy award-winning wines while taking in breathtaking 180-degree views. While you’re here, don’t miss the three wines recently rated 90-plus points by Wine Spectator: 2017 Tres Violet, 2017 Grenache and 2017 Kate’s Zinfandel. With glass walls, the tasting room serves as a fitting showcase for both the lush wines and the beautiful setting. Come visit Calcareous and enjoy the new culinary experience presented by Chef Destiny. Calcareous Vineyard tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 3430 Peachy Canyon Road in Paso Robles. For more information, visit www.calcareous.com or call (805) 239-0289.

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

More than 200 wineries produce critically acclaimed vintages in Paso Robles, Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley. Visitors can head out along the gorgeous country roads to sip their way through the vineyards.

San Luis Obispo’s unusual natural beauty, along with its gentle climate, first attracted the Spanish padres to the area in the 1700s. In 1772, they built the fifth of California’s 21 missions

D NR

1119 CC.indd 32

here, on the banks of San Luis Creek, and named it Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today, many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions.

t’s no wonder the people here call it SLO. No one is in any hurry in the cafes or on the sidewalks, and certainly no one is in any rush to leave. Strangers are genuinely friendly, always ready to talk about their favorite hiking trail or barbecue joint, or to point the way to the winery with the best Pinot Noir. It’s all part of the SLO life, that combination of good stuff that makes visiting here so nourishing to the soul.

I conic coastal views defi ne the San Luis Obispo coastline, but no vista is quite as grand as the lookout from Avila Beach. Sloping hills dip down towards the harbor, which is home to three piers— two of which are open to the public, and feature restaurants with menus full of fresh seafood. At local winery tasting rooms, friendly San Luis Obispo staff pour a diverse collection of stunning Central Coast wines; take a sip while taking in the picturesque views. PREF

Rich in multicultural history, indigenous Chumash settlers and Spain’s famous Portola Expedition of the Central Coast were followed by homesteading Swiss-Italian dairyman, Danish, Scotch, Irish and English settlers, Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, Filipino and Mexican farmers and workers. Steeped in the traditions of their families, city pioneers arrived and nurtured the area. Their efforts later became immortalized on street surnames, businesses, schools and even Santa Maria-style BBQ. There’s plenty of sunshine for sightseeing and winery visiting, but dress in layers. Late afternoon breezes arrive like clockwork to cool the vines that provide for Santa Maria’s most impressive wines.

Santa Ynez Valley The Santa Ynez Valley is a Trip for the Ages — No Matter the Generation With a rich combination of activities, world-class wine, farm-to-table restaurants, and more, a perfect Santa Ynez Valley itinerary exists for all different for every visitor. This is exactly what makes the wine country of California’s Central Coast such a gem: With so many incredible options and attractions — from morning hikes that peak with Pacific Ocean views to lush vineyards that produce a broad array of varietals to a diverse culinary scene rooted in the farm-to-table movement — the Santa Ynez Valley offers more than a few things for everyone.

FIGUEROA MTN

It’s like a Choose Your Own Adventure book ... but with better wine. Less than 45 minutes from the Santa Barbara Airport (SBA), two hours from Los Angeles, and four hours from the San Francisco Bay Area, getting to the Santa Ynez Valley is the easy part. Choosing from the array of unforgettable experiences that the six distinct communities of the Santa Ynez Valley offer is the bigger challenge. After lunch, it’s time for a group horseback ride through the vineyard with Vino Vaqueros or KAP Land & Cattle. Then relax with a family-friendly wine tasting at Buttonwood Farm and Winery. Return to Solvang for some fun at The Ultimate Escape Room or Space VR (virtual reality) and some authentic Italian at Leonardo's Ristorante & Pizzeria. After the hike, grab lunch at Industrial Eats in Buellton then explore the wineries around the area, including Standing Sun Wine, which boasts a unique combination of wine, art and music. End with dinner at First & Oak in Solvang for a truly intimate experience. For more information or to begin planning a trip to the Santa 101 Ynez Valley, visit visitsyv.com.

Do the Math As with anything agricultural, of course, these are all based on countless variables, but this is a good starting point.

A single bottle contains:

750 ml of wine which is 25.6 ounces made from about 2.4 pounds of grapes (39 oz.) and is enough for four or maybe five glasses.

=

WINE TASTING 101 Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through the wine country of California’s Central Coast. Be aware, although some wineries don’t charge for tastings, most do. Figure an “average” tasting fee may be $10-$30. Many wineries will also waive the fee with a purchase, always ask. Ready to taste? Let’s get started! • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart. • Don’t worry if you “don’t know good wine.”“Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass…and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon scented? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!

One standard oak barrel of wine holds: 295 bottles of wine (or 59 gallons) made from 740 pounds of grapes which works out to almost – but not precisely - 24 cases of wine.

• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)? • Ask questions! Remember…there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help you. • Don’t feel self-conscious expressing your opinion, there is no right or wrong. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($3-$10 generally). • Enjoy yourself and remember, what you like today, you may not like tomorrow; your taste and palate may change, and that’s a good thing.

A case of wine includes: A dozen 750 ml bottles (or 24 half bottles) or 307.2 ounces total, which comes from 30 pounds of grapes.

• Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out of the way, boutique wineries. • Hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette. Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never drink wine from another winery.

An acre of vineyards land can give the grower: Five tons of grapes (though it is also less, depending on a variety of farming and winemaking practices, and on the varietal and the vineyards location) which will give you 797 gallons of juice (or thirteenand-a-half barrels) which is pretty close to four thousand bottles of wine.

• Try to plan ahead. Do some research to determine if there is a tasting fee, if appointments are necessary and the policy on dogs and children. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver. If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them. • Enjoy yourself!

Ventura County Sun, Sand, History and Wine Fun! “Ventura Highway in the sunshine, where the days are longer, the nights are stronger than the moonshine, you’re gonna go I know.”* What better reason to go than to spend a rambling day (or two) along the Ventura 101 Freeway (or King’s Highway), from Camarillo to the seaside town of Ventura, (named after Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782), sipping wines, enjoying the sunshine and drive as you meet winemakers in their welcoming, friendly tasting rooms.

haven to come, sit, sip and relax with old and new friends alike, while sampling their assortment of hand crafted award winning wines. On Friday evenings (between 5:00-8:00pm) you can accompany your tasting with a gourmet cheese platter or small bites as you “time travel” to this Italian retreat, even if just for a few hours. Less than 10 minutes from Magnavino, you’ll arrive at Four Brix Winery in Ventura. Step into this fun, funky tasting roomwinery to savor wines made from grapes that are an homage to four great grape regions: Italy, France, Spain and California. Offering a “tapas menu” to accompany your wine tasting, Four Brix is a special “community.” Live concerts and special events are a constant at Four Brix---the fun never stops here. A few blocks from Four Brix is Panaro Brothers Winery. Being fifth generation Italian-American winemakers, the four Panaro Brothers offer a wide selection of mostly single-varietal wines, grapes sourced from vineyards stretching from Monterey through the Central Coast. You will be warmly welcomed into “la famiglia,” so come sit, sip and enjoy a selection of Italian style wines – once you do you will return often. As we cruise into spring and summer, plan some daytrips to the many unique tasting rooms throughout Ventura County. Please check individual websites for hours of operation, (most being open 3-4 days a week). *Lyrics from Ventura Highway, by America. >> DON SONDERLING

So Many Tasting Rooms—Not Enough Time (nut plenty of wine) With more than 20 tasting rooms to choose from, the Camarillo-Ventura corridor is less than a two-hour drive from central Orange County, and an hour or less from greater Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Enjoy the fruitful bounty of what Ventura County has to offer – you won’t be disappointed.

Four Not to Miss Travelling north on the 101 toward Ventura, you may want to make your first stop at Herzog Wine Cellars, in Oxnard. Though a well-known larger winery, Herzog (producing Kosher wines), has a fascinating history, and includes in their line-up smaller lot, limited edition and premium wines. Take the self-guided tour which is educational and fascinating. Magnavino Cellars, is a mile down the road from Herzog. Entering, you will feel transported into a delightful Italian wine country getaway. Robert and Barbara Wagner have created a
