MARTIAN RANCH AND VINEYARD

OUT OF THE WAY, OUT OF THE ORDINARY: NOT TO BE MISSED Martian Ranch and Vineyard isn’t located near the top-secret military base known as “Area 51” where (supposedly), evidence of extra-terrestrials (Martians) exist. It is situated in Alisos Canyon, about a 15-minute drive north of the “wine town” of Los Olivos, three miles east of Highway 101 by Los Alamos. This unique property looks nothing like a Martian landscape and in fact, the name “Martian” has nothing to do with Martians; (the name is a blend of the owner’s sons: Martin and Ian). Take time to make the drive down Alisos Canyon, and be rewarded by the bucolic landscape, surrounded by hills, farms and ranches reflecting the beauty of the season. Once you arrive at Martian Ranch and Vineyard, you will be in for a very special experience.

From the Land Comes the Wine Located in an area that is well known growing mostly Rhône varieties, this very distinct piece of property, with varying microclimates, is friendly to not only Rhônes, but also many Spanish varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha and Albarino. Martian Ranch grows 11 separate varieties and produces a dozen estate wines, which you may sample in their cozy, friendly tasting room.

During your visit, you will taste unique blends, and varietals

such as Clairette and Monastrell which are not common to the area. However, don’t come for just a tasting, come for a most unique experience, where you will learn to truly appreciate the wines you are tasting, and why the land and farming practices are so exceptional.

To enhance your visit, plan on taking a vineyard tour.

Whether your tour is led by Nan Hegeland (owner) or Amanda Herrell (operations manager), you will be amazed at what takes place on the 20 planted acres on this 102-acre ranch. Since the first vines were planted in 2007, Nan has been committed to the concept of Biodynamic® farming. “Biodynamic” in itself often seems to be used as a buzzword. During your vineyard tour you will come to understand that “Biodynamic” farming, put simply, is an intricately woven together tapestry where the earth, environment, weather, flora, fauna, and all elements work in concert together creating a natural dependence for a healthy habitat and ecology. During your vineyard tour, wending your way around and through the vines, Amanda (or Nan) will describe the intricate interactions taking place throughout the year, and how the Biodynamic calendar helps bring the entire farming tapestry together. Don’t be put off by technical or scientific explanations – it will all make perfect sense to you –

We grow the best possible grapes to make the best wine possible using what the land naturally gives us. But, once that is done, we want our guests to experience our wines, in a fun atmosphere.” You will learn how each individual piece fits into perpetuating the health of the land (such as burying manure filled cow horns), and how blue bird and owl boxes and the fish pond help sustain the viability and longevity of the land, all while complimenting each other to produce an optimal growing environment. All of this leads to raising the best possible grapes naturally, as nature intended.

You may be familiar with the Robert Hall name because of their retail distributed wines, however, the winery features a Cavern Select label as a direct to consumer offering of very limited production wines only available in the tasting room, through the wine club, or on the winery’s website.

The current tasting menu features five wines, with the tasting line-up changing every month depending on the season, new releases and just to keep it fresh. The wines are offered at an extremely good value for premium wine, allowing consumers the opportunity to enjoy the wine every day with friends and family.

The tasting room staff has extensive wine and region knowledge and are not only happy to answer any questions, they can also take you on a tour of their expansive wine cavern and production facility. Celebrating Grape Harvest Next to the Sea San Luis Obispo’s “Harvest on the Coast” Weekend of Events is November 1 - 3 With its wineries located just five miles from the ocean on average, it’s fitting that SLO Coast Wine Country holds its signature harvest season event right next to the Pacific.

Indeed, on Saturday, November 2, from noon to 2:30 p.m., local wineries and chefs from more than 60 establishments will converge in an outdoor tent pavilion setting at Avila Beach Resort for the Grand Tasting as part of the larger Harvest on The Coast weekend celebration, http://www.slocoastwine.com/events/ harvest-on-the-coast/.

The day will also be punctuated by live music by Ricky Montijo, and then from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., an exciting winemaker-led wine and lifestyle auction that features rare wines, themed destination getaways, culinary treats and more. The live auction will also again feature the “Archie McLaren Fund-A-Need” lot where all proceeds benefit a worthy local cause.

Meanwhile, those interested in kicking off the weekend the night before are invited to the “Crafted on the Coast” collaborative winemaker dinner happening on Friday, November 1 at Filipponi Ranch in San Luis Obispo.

Delights continue on Sunday, November 3 with “Surf’s Up Sunday,” where wineries throughout the region host a day of open house offerings such as hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment and wine discounts. This event is complimentary to all who attend Saturday’s Grand Tasting event.

The weekend’s signature event is an open-air, ocean-view Grand Tasting on November 2 at the Avila Beach Resort located at 6464 Ana Bay Road in Avila Beach. The entry fee covers all food, wine and on-site parking. General admission tickets are $90 offering entry at noon and wine and food tasting until 2:30 p.m. Attendees at the Grand Tasting and Wine Auction will enjoy all-inclusive wine tastings and cuisine provided by more than 60 local winemakers, chefs and artisan food producers. Meanwhile, enjoy live music by American singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist Ricky Montijo, known for his eclectic mix of soul, rock, Latin, blues, reggae, pop and world music.

• Live Auction – November 2 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Next, the live auction begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Avila Beach Resort and runs until 4 p.m. Premium seating at the live auction includes tables of 10 for $130 with wine service and appetizers (this ticket rate also includes the Grand Tasting from noon to 2:30 p.m.). A designated-driver ticket is also available for $40.

The auction will be hosted by Master of Ceremonies Wendy Thies Sell, who is an Emmy award-winning journalist and beloved local media personality; and Auctioneer John Glines, a veteran ringman, auctioneer and chair for many prominent charity events throughout the state and beyond.

OPOLO VINEYARDS Whether you’re exploring the Paso Robles wine region for a day or a week, Opolo Vineyards is a must-visit destination along Vineyard Drive when touring wineries on scenic Highway 46 West. When tasting, don’t miss their flagship wine, Mountain Zinfandel. The multi-award winner is a fan favorite with its approachable fruit-forward notes complemented by complex depth and body. A traditional lineup of wine varieties is enhanced by Spanish and Italian varietals like Albariño, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, and a delicious proprietary Italian blend of Sangiovese and Barbera called Montagna-Mare.

Their large outdoor covered patio surrounded by vineyards is the perfect spot to sit back and relax with a glass of wine and partake in their Pairings on the Patio. The comprehensive menu includes produce from the estate’s gardens for the fresh, made-daily salads, local artisan cheese plates and selection of gourmet pizzas from their wood-fired oven. The housemade sausages are a nod to Quinn’s Serbian heritage with specialties like the evapi, grilled finger-sized lamb sausages served with pita bread and kajmak, a thick and tasty unripened cheese made from cow or sheep’s milk. The Tri Kobasice plates includes three housemade sausages and dipping sauce served with seasonal vegetables, cheese and focaccia bread. All the food items are paired with a glass Opolo wine and the menu changes seasonally, encouraging guests to come often to taste the chef’s newest culinary creations.

The Spirit Of Paso Using both estate-grown grapes and local fruits, the Willow Creek Distillery creates a variety of handcrafted aromatic fruit brandies and premium liqueurs right on the property. Formerly called The Distillery at Opolo, Willow Creek was founded in 2013 with the intent to produce top quality brandies to accompany their wines. TWO MOONS Place yourself on a ridge somewhere along the rugged and majestic California coastline. The sun has long set and the final remnants of the day have since given way to stars brilliantly flickering revealed by the absence of street lamps and headlights. Our solitary satellite has begun its daily sojourn across the heavens, and although most days it does so shrouded in the shadow of our own planet, tonight it shines in all of its grandeur. Now reaching its peak over the vanishing, infinite horizon, it becomes apparent that tonight, the moon does not travel alone, but rather with a partner. An identical orb made only of light that exists only on the threshold of the sky and the sea, rendered immediately unrecognizable by even the slightest disturbance to the water which serves as its fragile canvas. But tonight, wind nor wave will upset the perfect balance, and the moon’s projected partner glides over the waxy surface uninhibited. The tandem, one moving across the infinite field of space and the other across the seemingly infinite field of the ocean, are the Two Moons from which we have derived our namesake.

These Two Moons are more than just a pretty tag line: it is representative of the ethos and the wines of a boutique winery in Paso Robles. The metaphor of balance is clearly applied in the choice to specialize in RhĂ´ne blends and varietals, emphasizing the distinct characteristics of each varietal yet crafted to avoid being

All of the wines are given a name that describes an element of the human condition, inviting the drinker to reflect and place oneself in that precise moment of existence. Manifest can be defined as “to make or become evident,” and for us that means a Rosé that the characteristics of the terroir and varietal are front and center: and that variety is Mourvedré. Drawing inspiration from Bandol, our fruit comes from the Briarwood Vineyard on the west side of Paso, grown and harvested with the intent of being made into Rosé. Nectarine, reminiscent of its color, subtle strawberries and blueberries dance delicately on the palate, with a mineral finish that made this our summertime go-to.

Ardor is a Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedré (GSM) blend – heavy on the Mourvedré. Ardor is synonymous with fervor and passion, and so is this wine. Blueberry, black plum and blackberry intertwine, with hints of aged meat and spices. Pair it with a thickcut bacon-wrapped figs on the barbecue and you have a pairing that is to die for.

The tasting room is located at 2490 Ramada Drive in Paso Robles, a perfect little stop on your way to – or from – Tin City.

“Customers are assured of getting an intimate and engaging experience with our small staff. The barrels are steps away, and you can visit the cellar where the wines are made. You can stand at the bar, or retreat to comfortable seating for privacy, and enjoy a flight of Stephen Ross wines or wine by the glass.”

Featured wine releases for the season include Stephen Ross’s 2016 Pinot Noir, “Arete” (ahr-it-tey’), meaning the pinnacle of something or the highest level of virtue or excellence.

“As our Stone Corral estate vineyard has matured since being planted in 2001, the blocks and clones have really begun to express themselves in unique and amazing ways,” Paula said. “We have seen this developing in recent vintages and decided to carve

out the Arete in 2016 to really highlight the best from the vineyard.

The grapes were hand-harvested and sorted in the cool of night.

Non-fined and non-filtered, we aged the wine for 18 months in French oak barrels.”

Also pouring in the tasting room this summer are Stephen Ross’s 2016 Pinot Noir, Stone Corral Vineyard ($60), the 2017 Albariño, Spanish Springs Vineyard ($25), and the 2016 Chardonnay, Edna Valley ($28).

SUSTAINABLE FARMING Stone Corral Vineyard in Edna Valley supplies 100 percent of their estate-grown grapes for Stephen Ross wines. The rest is sourced from premium parcels within the Central Coast AVA, throughout San Luis Obispo County’s Edna Valley, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands, and Paso Robles. A conscientious effort to maintain sustainability practices and surrounding themselves with future leaders of their industry is a priority.

“We have a great cellar crew of Cal Poly University Wine and Viticulture grads and students,” said Paula. “Our vineyards, estate and contracted, are either SIP Certified or Certified

Organic. For example, we laid down a band of organic mulch six inches deep under the vines to suppress weed growth and hold moisture in the soil. We do what we can to be good stewards of the environment.”

Many consider the Costa de Oro tasting room their home away from a home – a Central Coast “cheers” welcoming locals and fellow travelers as though they just arrived for a memorable Thanksgiving.

And, on the weekends, that includes local bands playing rock, country and western music, a spread of tasty food from the steakhouse across the street, Cool Hand Luke’s, delicious Pinots and Chardonnays, and a gathering of exuberant people to chat with about wine and life while toasting the Santa Maria Valley. Opened in 2006, the casual Tuscanstyle room offers an expansive view of the unique landscape that is the Santa Maria Valley. Whether you found Costa de Oro (Spanish for gold coast) off the freeway or it’s your weekly destination, the crowds, wine, music and staff have created a destination that celebrates its roots.

If you’re familiar with the area dating back to the late ’70s you likely remember Gold Coast Farms where founders Ron Burk and Bob Espinola grew delicious crops including strawberries, cauliflower and sweet corn. As the story goes, Ron and Bob decided to grow grapes on a bluff at Fuglar’s Point where the soil wasn’t conducive for vegetables, and in 1989 Gold Coast Vineyard was planted with cuttings from the prestigious Sierra Madre Vineyard. Today, 20 acres of Pinot Noir and 10 acres of Chardonnay cover this beautiful landscape of the Santa Maria Valley.

Costa De Oro Winemaker Gary Burk, a former singer and guitar player living in Los Angeles, supplemented his income selling Gold Coast Wines to Au Bon Climat, Foxen, and other local wineries. After years of honing his craft at the famed Au Bon Climat/ Qupé winery, Gary produced the first Costa de Oro wines; one barrel each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Production has increased to 6,500 cases annually and the wine is sold in 15 states across the country. Costa de Oro also produces special private labels for clients including James Beard Award Winner Roy Yamaguchi of Roy’s Restaurants and the Halekulani Hotel on Waikiki Beach.

Ranging in price from $25 to $55, current highlights from the tasting menu include: 2018 Pinot Noir Rosé, 2017 Estate Chardonnay, Gold Coast Vineyard, 2017 Estate Pinot Noir, and the 2018 “Spring Fling” White Table Wine, Santa Barbara County.

Reserve wines you won’t want to miss include: Reseva Daroda Chardonnay, aged for three years it has a butterscotch/buttery toast characteristic while still being very floral and fruity; the award-winning Reserva oro Rojo Pinot Noir, known for its silkiness, is golden red, fruit-forward with hints of spice; Dijon Pinot Noir comes from a grape originally brought over from France to Oregon State University where it moved down the coast and ended up in the Santa Maria Valley where Costa de Oro has perfected it. And, rumor has it there’s a Syrah coming out in the winter. Last year they only made a limited supply, so it went quickly!

Tasting fees are $10 for five one-ounce pours – also available by the glass for $12 or by the bottle. Locals highly recommend the meat and cheese platters, and for those weekend spreads, the tri-tip.

Inaugural ‘Taste of the Santa Ynez Valley’ – October 17-20 Four-Day, Experiential Food and Wine Destination Event, Takes Over the California Central Coast Wine Region’s Six Towns First Annual Santa Ynez Valley Signature Event to include: • Town-Wide, Progressive Dinner • VIP Wine Tastings and Seminars • Varying Menu of Winemaker Dinners • Live Music; Film Screening; • Vineyard Tours and Outdoor Activities; • “Solvang Grape Stomp” and “Sideways Fest” The Santa Ynez Valley, home to one of the California Central Coast’s renowned wine regions, will host its inaugural four-day food, wine and experiential event, “Taste of the Santa Ynez Valley: The First Course in Food, Wine, and Experiences” (TasteSYV.com), Thursday through Sunday, October 17-20. The new signature event will take place in the six Santa Ynez Valley wine country towns of Los Alamos, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, Solvang, Ballard and Buellton, with immersive experiences meant to serve as an introductory course to the edible and imbibe-able bounty of the burgeoning food, wine and beer destination.

More than 100 restaurants, wineries, wine tasting rooms, breweries, distilleries and entertainment venues will welcome Santa Ynez Valley visitors and locals during the four days of foodie adventure, with nine main events and upward of one- to two-dozen ancillary happenings spread throughout the region, with associated tickets and pricing designed for all wining and dining budgets.

“Santa Ynez Valley is quietly rising to the top of wine and food lovers’ lists as a must-visit wine region, and our offering of not one, but six towns to explore and consume, means there’s something here for nearly every ‘taste’,” said Shelby Sim, President / CEO of Visit the Santa Ynez Valley, the destination marketing organization overseeing the event’s production.

Launching Thursday, October 17 in the final food-frontier of Los Alamos, guests may pull up a chair for a seated dinner served at a lengthy communal table, on the atmospheric Old West town’s main thoroughfare of Bell Street. Featured chefs and restaurants will include the likes of entertainment exec-turned-baker, Bob

Oswaks, of Bob’s Well Bread Bakery; pioneering Los Alamos chef/ restaurateur, Clark Staub, of Full of Life Flatbread; heavy-hitting wine tasting room and restaurant combos like winemaker Will Henry’s joint venture with chef Drew Terp, Pico at the Los Alamos General Store, or farmer James Ontiveros’ Ranchos de Ontiveros Wines coupled with chef Conrad Gonzales’ Cisko Kid oakwood grilling; and Bell’s Restaurant, at which the serious culinary cred of husband/wife team Greg and Daisy Ryan, takes a French twist.

The al fresco dinner will begin with a sparkling toast featuring Riverbench Vineyard & Winery.

Thursday event attendees may also sample from the wine, beer and cider havens of Casa Dumetz Wines and Babi’s Beer Emporium, natural-leaning Lo-Fi Wines or Bodega Los Alamos, Bedford Winery, Municipal Winemakers and more, either at the businesses’ Los Alamos locations or at a wine tasting and live music gathering in the town’s Ferrini Park, where Santa Maria and Los Alamos wineries will pour in a grand tasting format.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings will offer event attendees stand-alone, optional activities such as hikes, bicycling, horseback riding, yoga in the vineyards, brunches, breakfasts and coffee experiences, plus a Saturday-only “Sideways Shuttle Tour”.

Continuing on Friday, October 18, in the Valley’s namesake town of Santa Ynez, Taste of the Santa Ynez Valley will educate guests during wine seminars and wine tastings – the latter showcasing Santa Ynez-proper and Happy Canyon AVA wines – to be held at the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum. The storied Maverick Saloon will host an evening concert and BBQ, while Carr Winery pairs with a local chef for a wine dinner at their Santa Ynez Warehouse.

Also on tap for Friday, is the beginning of the Sta. Rita Hills Wine Alliance’s Sideways Fest Wine & Movie Celebration (sidewaysfest.com), an event-filled tribute to the film which 15 years ago, kick-started the Santa Ynez Valley’s place in wine and movie history. The Friday night Sideways Fest happening, to be held at the open-air Solvang Festival Theater, will include a movie screening and wine tasting spotlighting wineries tied to the now-iconic film.

A Q&A Panel featuring Sideways film personalities will precede the screening.

Wine Country This Month: Central Coast

The foodie fun will continue on Saturday, October 19, in the Santa Ynez Valley hubs of Los Olivos and Solvang. The festival within a festival which puts the “country” back in “wine country”, Los Olivos’ annual “Day in the Country” (losolivosca.com/day-in-the-country) fall fest will serve as the family-friendliest portion of Taste of the Santa Ynez Valley. The Victorian-era village’s streets will be closed to traffic, boasting rows of artisan vendors, food trucks and booths, an early morning family “fun run,” and a small-town parade. Los Olivos’ walkable avenues will lead tasting passport-holding guests through the wine-soaked town, while a tented VIP Lounge will feature Los Olivos-area labels lacking in-town tasting rooms.

The second annual Solvang Grape Stomp (solvangusa.com/ wine-country/solvang-grape-stomp) will also take place on Saturday, with an actual grape stomping opportunity, live music, and Valleywide producer wine tastings lining pedestrian-friendly streets in the heart of Solvang, “California’s Denmark”. Saturday evening will bring wine dinner experiences scattered about both Los Olivos and Solvang, at Santa Ynez Valley wine country restaurant favorites like local-food-driven Root 246 at Hotel Corque; Michelin-honored First &

Oak; in the pastoral burg of Ballard, at chef/owner Budi Kazali’s The Gathering Table at his Ballard Inn; and a BBQ at the luxe cowboy lifestyle resort, The Alisal Guest Ranch.

On Sunday, the festivities move down the road to the traveltown of Buellton, where Taste of the Santa Ynez Valley culminates with a Sideways Wine Festival grand tasting at River View Park featuring wine, beer and food from all over the Santa Ynez Valley, accompanied by live music. Sunday night stays will award guests with both wine- and beer-pairing dinners in and around Buellton, including vineyard events at some of the Valley’s most picturesque winery properties, in addition to a daytime cooking class and evening wine dinner at Industrial Eats.
