“March 2019 was the second-best month ever. In March this year, everybody’s been calling and placing orders like you wouldn’t believe!” said Gary. “By the end of the month, March 2020 eclipsed last March in total sales.

We’re taking so many orders. I’m just amazed at how people have responded.”

Eberle Winery’s sustained popularity isn’t surprising. In Paso Robles, Gary is known as the “godfather” of the region. It was in 1982 that he and fellow winemakers Tom Meyer, Tom Martin, and Vic Roberts, and grape grower Herman Schwartz merged their commitments to develop the Paso Robles AVA and popularize the region, which at the time was relatively unknown.

Nowadays, Paso Robles is mentioned in the same breath as other wine regions of high esteem.

Decades forward, winemaker Chris Eberle, who coincidentally shares Gary’s surname, shares a like mindset for excellent winemaking. Raised all over California, Chris earned his agricultural business degree at Cal Poly and enology degree at Washington State University. He first made wine at Eberle

Winery in 2006, but in 2009 he broadened his horizons to roam the world, make wine and immerse himself in his craft in several countries, including South Africa, Germany, New Zealand, Australia and France. Upon returning to work for Gary in 2015, Chris added distinction to the Eberle arsenal of awards by producing even more medal-winning white wines.

Quality, Consistency and Acclaim Double gold medals, gold medals (more than 600) and platinum medals are not what drive Gary to enter wine competitions. Rather, it’s the fact that high honors are emblematic of the excellence and consistency of Eberle products, all of which are estate wines. Gary’s favorite competitions are “blind” contests, because panelists are unaware of the brands they are tasting.

“It’s not so much about winning at every competition, it’s knowing that you’ve got a good wine. None of them have to win gold every time; they’re an indication that you’re moving in the right direction.

But when they’re winning at every competition, you know you’ve got a good wine.”

Featured Wines and Ordering Among Eberle’s premier vintages are Cotes-du-Robles (Blanc and Rouge), Estate and Reserve Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Barbera, Sangiovese, Muscat, and delicious Viognier wines, including a Special Release Winemaker Series of Viognier Liqueur and Eberle’s sought-after 2015 Vintage Port.

Eberle Viognier is a glistening white jewel among its ruby counterparts. Generous aromas of orange blossom and honeysuckle mingle with peach, apricot, and soft tropical fruits of mango and banana with a clean and lingering finish. The 2018 Viognier is selling briskly and will soon make way for the 2019 Viognier.

The Syrah, Steinbeck Vineyard, has earned a special place in the Eberle family of wines. Gary Eberle was among the first American winemakers to craft an exclusively Syrah varietal wine. Four decades later, the 2018 Syrah is a beaut! Blueberry and blackberry aromas are greeted by espresso, dark cocoa, cherries and detectable minerality in this full-bodied wine. Eberle recommends pairing this Syrah with

braised short ribs in tomato sauced atop creamy polenta.

The 2017 Reserve Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a rock star in the Eberle line. Barrels of choice fruits are aged for a full 24 months in French oak. Dark plums and currants drench the mid-palate, followed by licorice, cola, and cardamom in a velvety finish. This is the bottle to break out for succulent prime rib, roast lamb and ribeye steak dinners – and age in the cellar for special occasions.

In July 2019, to commemorate Gary’s 40th year, Eberle debuted the “Legacy” 2017 Eberle Cabernet Sauvignon at the winery. Made from Eberle and Still Waters Vineyard grapes, this elegant, bold and nicely structured Cab is still available in coppery-labeled magnum bottles for graceful aging and impressive gift-giving.

rgh! There will be no storming the castle just yet this season at Tooth & Nail Winery, as the tasting room is temporarily closed due to COVID-19 mandates for social distancing. But visitors are welcome to cross the moat without restraints to stock up on their favorite wine and food.

“We’re seeing strong demand in our online sales along with family-style meal offerings,” said Caine Thompson. “It’s a challenging period for the wine industry, but we’re actively planning and preparing for the reopen with new initiatives at Tooth & Nail.”

One of these new initiatives is the acceptance of digital currencies at the tasting room, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP. The initiative compliments the move into augmented reality of several of the winery’s wine labels.

Rabble’s luxurious Amor Fati, or “love of one’s fate,” series of wines are crafted with late-season grapes full of concentrated flavor. The 2016 Amor Fati Syrah is intensely fragrant with blackberries, plum and rhubarb and warmed by hints of anise, black pepper and bacon fat. Strong, plush dark fruit and spice in this medium-bodied wine carry well into the finish with firm tannins and balanced acidity. Buy one to drink and another for the cellar. This one pairs nicely with braised meats, Korean BBQ or tacos.

remember a delightful fall afternoon, sitting on the patio of Lago Giuseppe Winery, watching hawks soar, listening to the birds, gazing out at the natural lake, as Jeanine Mistretta brought out a beautifully prepared and tasty charcuterie platter, as Joe began pouring wine for us to sample. The Wines: Joe wanted to offer a variety of wines with a focus on his 100% Sicilian heritage. Robert Fuller, winemaker, has been making wines in Paso Robles for well over a decade, and was a perfect fit for Joe’s vision. With his knowledge of Paso Robles’ Westside vineyards, Robert has the ability to source grapes from the many microclimates that are reflective of the area. Italian varietals of Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo are mainstays, but you will also enjoy tasting a selection of Bordeaux, Rhone and Burgundian varietals and blends. Among the choices of wines you have to pick from, make a point (if available) to start with a very special blend: Bellezza Nona.

This small production white blend is 70% Viognier, 20% Malvasia Bianca and 10% Orange Muscat. As Joe poured this tantalizing wine, he described it as “being like any good Sicilian woman: delightful, zesty and complex.” It was also fragrant, tantalizing and a perfect complement to the surrounding pastoral landscape.

The Food: Wine and food are symbiotic, and Lago Giuseppe offers savory accompaniments to enjoy with your wine tasting. During the week there are assorted appetizers to choose from, including an artisan cheese and meat board. Weekends are when Joe and Jeanine’s daughter Morgan, a Cordon-Bleu trained chef, prepares the Sicilian delights: Pizza, calzone and flatbreads, along with various salads, which are hard to resist. Pasta Sunday is when you can savor handmade pasta, following Sicilian family recipes. But….that’s not all! To satisfy that sweet craving, be certain to enjoy some of Morgan’s Italian Gelato, or melt in your mouth gourmet chocolates.

The Perfect Escape-or Event Venue As if the food, wine, ambience and family isn’t enough, Lago Giuseppe also has three distinctive guest suites. Come for a night or two, and escape “to the Italian countryside” when you book one of these elegant suites. or more than a decade, Chef Santos MacDonal and his wife and co-owner Carole MacDonal have drawn lovers of fine food to Il Cortile Ristorante at 608 12th Street in Paso Robles. Here, tantalizing Italian cuisine, freshly made pastas, locally sourced farm-fresh ingredients, a stellar wine list and first-rate service have beckoned locals and A-list foodies.

In the summer of 2013, Chef Santos and Carole opened a second business, La Cosecha Bar + Restaurant, at 835 12th Street. At this downtown location, the focus is on Spanish and South American flavors and craft cocktails. Chef Santos infuses his creations with Latin America-sourced spices, herbs and fruits that are reminiscent of his native Honduras.

Food and Drinks To-go As the nation copes with a health crisis, both restaurants will remain closed for public seating, but Chef Santos and Carole remain busy at work preparing pick-up fare for their hungry guests at La Cosecha. From Wednesday through Sunday, from noon to 7 p.m., customers can place their food orders by calling (805) 237-0019. “At La Cosecha, we’ve streamlined our operation, and everyone is wearing a mask. Our sanitizing protocol is applied in a measured and careful way, and there are six different spots for customers to pick up their food when they arrive. “It does feel kind of odd to stand six feet apart from one another,” said Carole. “We do a lot of waving to one another!”

“Our priorities have evolved over the past ten years,” said Carole. “As always, we strive to develop interesting, fun, and creative menus with the freshest ingredients possible. So, in addition to great food, wine and cocktails, service is what we’re known for. It’s about going above and beyond, and that’s what we’re trying to maintain.”

Two Menus to Choose From Customers can select Il Cortile or La Cosecha menu items from the Carry Out menu or the Dinner Package menu. Salads, appetizers, pizzas, sandwiches and your favorite entrées can be picked up at La Cosecha, located just north of City Park in Paso Robles.

A sample of Chef Santos’s dishes includes ceviche, pork tacos, stone-fired pizzas, hamburgers, shrimp and linguica paella, moqueca (Brazilian seafood stew), fresh seafood of the day, pasta primavera, pasta pomodoro, his famous osso bucco, and more. A small assortment of gluten-free and vegetarian options is available, so kindly mention any special requests when ordering.

There are four Dinner Package options that feed four people.

“Margarita, Margarita” provides four margarita cocktails, eight tacos, and one margarita pizza for $50. “Seafood Anyone?” contains four pan-seared crab cakes over a bed of seasonal vegetables and eight gambas with tomato guajillo sauce for $45.

“Family Night” offers a scrumptious selection of three pulled pork sliders, three burgers, and three caprese sliders, your choice of one margarita-style or bianco pizza and four sangrias for just $35. Last, but not least, is the chef’s lasagna that feeds four with your choice of pasta or salad for $27. (“It’s the best lasagna I’ve ever eaten in my life!” said Carole.)

In addition to margaritas and sangrias to-go, any cocktail listed on the online cocktails menu is available for purchase. If you prefer wine added to your meal, Carole has you covered.

“Once or twice a week, we see our regular customers and make their visits as special for them as possible,” Carole said.

experience – from the time they arrive until the time they leave – and we continue doing that today.”

“We’ve had employees who have been serving the same customers for ten years. Our newest person has been here for two or three years. Our staff is the heartbeat of our restaurant and I’m proud of them,” Carole said. “In fact, many of our regular customers like to see the same server for great conversation about food, wine, and to just have fun. We miss them! And we can’t wait to attract new customers, too.”

Carole is no stranger to providing delicious food and impeccable service, even in the toughest of times.

“More than a decade ago, we had our grand opening during a recession,” recalls Carole. “We’ve weathered tough times before and we’re going to move onward with the same resolve to get back to some semblance of normal and do so in a socially-responsible way,” said Carole. “We can never take anything for granted. We’re grateful for every person who walks through the door.

Registration Opens for 2020 Central Coast Competitions: Wine, Craft Spirits, Vinegar 2020 Central Coast Wine Competition The competition returns this year with an elite judging panel The Central Coast Wine Competition, hosted annually by the California Mid-State Fair and sponsored by The Tribune and American General Media, is now accepting entries.

The Central Coast Wine Competition promotes the quality and diversity of commercial wineries while recognizing the fastest growing wine region in California and showcases the California Mid-State Fair’s commitment to value-added agricultural products.

The eligible counties are: Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

Discounted early-bird registration ends Friday, May 29, 2020 with an entry cost of $65 per wine. After May 29, registration increases to $85 per wine. Registration closes Friday, June 5, 2020.

The competition and judging take place June 17 and 18, 2020.

Chief Judge Tim McDonald is returning with an impressive lineup of judges, including industry leaders and international wine journalists, including Phil Markert, director of liquor for Albertsons/Vons, Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast’s contributing editor and Bill Hayes, senior buyer for BevMo!.

“Our goal with the Central Coast Wine Competition is to promote the quality and style of wines being produced on the Central Coast, and to expand knowledge and awareness to wine consumers of the accomplished wineries in the region,” says California Mid-State Fair Interim CEO Colleen Bojorquez.

2020 Central Coast Craft Spirits Competition

The CCSC helps promote the craft distillers that are producing the finest quality artisan spirits inside and outside of California. The competition welcomes craft distillers from all over the United States, offering an additional division for craft spirits produced outside of the state.

Discounted early-bird registration ends Friday, May 29, with an entry cost of $80 per spirit. Then registration increases to $90 per spirit and closes Friday, June 5. The competition and judging take place Tuesday, June 18 in Paso Robles.

Distilleries who participate in the competition will be invited to be a part of the Get Crafty Mixologist Competition at the California Mid-State Fair on Sunday, July 26. Mixologists, restaurants and/or bars will partner with a winning spirit from the California Craft Spirits Competition to create a cocktail of his/her choice. Cocktails are featured in a two-hour festival tasting. The competition is from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and the public, ticketed tasting is from 5 to 7 p.m.

“The California Craft Spirits Competition strives to promote the quality and diversity of craft spirits being produced in the state of California, and nationwide, and educate consumers on the artisan spirits industry that continues to grow.” says California Mid-State Fair Interim CEO Colleen Bojorquez.

Bethel Rd. Distillery Joins the Ranks of Local Distillers with Hand Sanitizer ‘From Our Still to Our Community’ Bethel Rd. Distillery and Winery has joined many distilleries around SanLuis Obispo County by turning their production of distilled spirits into the production of much-needed hand and surface sanitizer. The COVID-19 Pandemic has left many in our community without the protection they need, especially those on the front lines. Shifting production to this essential service was an easy decision.

Bethel Rd. has teamed up with a few other companies to produce their hand and surface sanitizer and get it into the hands of those who need it most.

In hard times like these, we are reminded how easily we all come together for a single cause and how every small effort creates a colossal difference.

Fable Soap Co., a Central Coast company, has partnered up with Bethel Rd. to donate sanitizer to those in need and provide hard to get spray bottles and other supplies. Bethel Rd. also teamed up with LABELTRONIX who is based in Anaheim, CA who donated the labels and printing costs. The design of its label was donated by Kraftwerk Design, Inc. out of San Luis Obispo, CA who has designed all Bethel Rd. wine and spirit labels.

With much gratitude for what these companies have done to aid Bethel Rd. in

the creation of its hand sanitizer, they are able to give to those in need.

Bethel Rd. has already donated 30 gallons of its hand sanitizer to the Sacramento Regional Fire Department/ EMS Communications Center. Dr. Kevin

Mackey stated, “This valuable resource will enable a collaborative program involving the Sacramento County Public Health Department and Students for a National Health Program, the Unhoused Encampment Outreach project. Our students are proud to serve as Disaster Service Workers to help prevent COVID-19 spread in the homeless community.”

Bethel Rd. has also made additional donations to local long-term care facilities, the Atascadero State Hospital and the Cal Poly University Police Department who is preparing to become an alternative treatment center for COVID-19 patients.

Across the U.S., in-store wine sales have risen 25% during the four-week period ending March 21, 2020. Directto-consumer sales from wineries rose by 18%, with an average bottle price of $42.08, according to Sovos ShipCompliant. Though this news is good for larger wineries with national distribution, this is not the case for thousands of boutique wineries whose only options are tasting room or wine club sales.

Along with listing purchase specials for over 60 wineries in the Paso Robles wine region, Home with Paso Wine also features new and fun ways to connect with the area’s wineries. Through independent virtual experiences, Paso Wine led Zoom Hangouts, winemaker contributed play lists and home recipes, binge watch recommendations and the wines that pair, as well as a published photo gallery featuring fans’ posts, there are some creative new ways to experience the Paso Robles wine region. Immediately following the recommended closures of tasting rooms across California, wineries began to design special opportunities to continue to connect with those patrons who favored their wines direct from the cellar door. The Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance created the Home with Paso Wine program to help wineries broaden their reach. The list of exclusive offers included discounted wines and shipping premiums, but also showcases a list of services like delivery or curbside pick-up, which includes what restaurants have extended for take-out food options. This extensive list is continually being updated.

“The Paso Robles wine community’s relationship with its fans is tight, so not surprisingly our wineries quickly adapted into virtual experiences to continue to enrich that commitment,” said Joel Peterson, Executive Director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance. “Our team created Home with Paso Wine as a fun and unified way to connect with fans who have supported Paso Wine country for years. Celebrating Mother’s Day and Mother Plants’ Nurturing Cannabis Love This month of May, we find ourselves in a very nontraditional global, pandemic. Let’s take a moment to recall fondly a more traditional month of May celebration – Mother’s Day. From antiquity, tradition has it that the month of May was named after the Greek/Roman goddess Maia. Her son, Hermes/Mercury, was the messenger of the gods. Maia was the goddess of spring, nursing mothers, motherhood, and sisterhood. Hence, she was associated with fertility, growth, prosperity, well-being and flowers.

In the shadow of this ancient tradition, is the U.S. celebration of Mother’s Day in the month of May. Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 at the behest of Ann Jarvis.

By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as a national day of honoring mothers.

“Mothers” in the Cannabis Industry are highly prized and protected plants. Mother Plants are carefully tended to ensure the next round of baby clones will be strong and healthy.

Mothers are part of a “closed loop” system for ensuring the desired cannabis strain is sustainable.

Some gardeners clone their mother plants down to replace with a fresh mother, the strongest from the next generation.

Sometimes the mother is allowed to grow free bursting into lush branches of fan leaves and baby flowers. Check out

I was born to be a mother. The oldest in a big family, I embraced my maternal instincts. I always felt great compassion for those who suffer. As a result, I’ve devoted much of my life to helping. Cannabis turned out to be a great natural long historical way to comfort and help with such ailments as: arthritic pain, insomnia, anxiety, spasticity, the side effects of chemotherapy, HIV wasting and so many other ailments.

In 1996, California’s Proposition 215, the “Compassionate Use Act”, passed. Now it became possible for friends to form collectives and other loose cooperatives to ensure patients would have access to their medicine. Cooking with cannabis and sharing with patients proved to be inspiring. You learn so much about life and death and all the crazy love and fun and tears in between when you sit with someone, hear their story and are able to provide them with some relief.

My dear, longtime friend, my “other mother,” hosted a fabulous High High Tea Party and a Happier Happy Hour, which featured my cannabis sweets and savories. Guests, all patients, were tempted (several for the first time) to taste appetizers and desserts with flavors of lemon, chocolate, cinnamon, ginger, basil, and cheese that blended well with

cannabis. It was a handful of friends and family who supported each other with wisdom and love by sharing the traditional, (historical) positive effects of cannabis on health and comfort.

The group no longer meets as several have moved away and several more have passed away.

My own mom and I shared a fabulous evening happy and high just prior to her passing. My siblings were very concerned as she had lost so much weight so quickly and refused to eat.

Her cancer was raging. Nothing tasted good.

As I set the table she told me she did not want to eat. “No problem,” I said while setting a plate of turtle brownies baked with cannabis infused butter on the table. “I’m not eating.” she grumbled. “Mom, do not eat those brownies, they are my dessert.” She was an ornery old woman and I knew as soon as she heard she was not supposed to eat those delicious, gooey, chocolaty, caramelly treats, she would be popping them into her mouth in defiance.

We ate a wonderful meal, laughed about all the mistakes we had made growing up, and played a couple rounds of bridge without cards. She won. The next morning as I fixed her hot butter rum apples over vanilla ice cream, my sisters arrived amazed at all she confessed to eating.

Mom was nourished enough to write good-bye notes to all her children expressing gratitude for life, love, and those kids who, she would say, “You know, kids, they love you, even when you don’t like them so much.” That’s my mom. Hope you and Dad have a bridge club in heaven.
