“WORK HARD, BE A LEADER, BE HUMBLE, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVE FUN.” These simple words are the guidelines of how I try to live my life each day. My grandfather, the legendary football coach, athletic director, and guidance counselor, Jim Cotter ’55 spoke these words often to me and my family. When asked to write a reflection on the appointment of my mother and Jim Cotter’s daughter, Grace Cotter Regan, this simple mantra came to mind on how we both approach life.

Bartley “Moe” Regan ’12 began his BC High career in the Arrupe Division. His love of sports propelled him to a career for the Eagles as a three-sport athlete throughout high school.

During his senior year, Moe led the football team to the state championship game at Gillette stadium as captain and quarterback. The team won the Super Bowl in 2011. Moe was also captain of the hockey team which played at Frozen Fenway in 2012.

In recognition of his success, leadership, and sportsmanship Moe received the Paul J. Hunter ’53 Outstanding Athlete Award his senior year at the athletic awards ceremony. The Hunter award is only given to one outstanding student each year.

His accomplishments on the field and in the classroom earned him a spot on the Stonehill Skyhawks football roster all four years. His love of the game transformed into a career as Assistant Athletic Director at Catholic Memorial High School. Moe continues to lead in sports as he is also a three-sport coach for the Knights in the same sports he played in high school.

Moe earned his B.A. in Communications from Stonehill College in 2016.

Work Hard. I grew up on Morrissey Boulevard, much like my mom and I don’t think I can remember a time when Boston College High School wasn’t a part of my life. My earliest memories are of my grandfather coaching football and me on the sidelines helping out. His practices left a real impression on me because he was never quiet about a player’s work ethic. My mom has the same grit and approach to getting the job done, and that has gotten her where she is today. But what I’ve learned from my mother feels more profound in that the persistence and commitment she’s shown toward her goal, has paid off. I’ve watched how hard she’s worked in each of her jobs, particularly at St. Mary’s of Lynn, where she had an uphill battle from day one, to turn it around and become a great school.

Athletics came easy to me, school work, not so much. My mother’s commitment to my academics helped me not just get by but thrive. She pushed me and continuously encouraged me to reach out when I needed help. That’s where Judy Fargo comes in, my high school guidance counselor. I remember running at full speed down McElroy Hall when I received my highest marks on a report card senior year. She was so proud of me because she knew how hard I had worked for those grades.

Be a Leader. I was really fortunate to play on a few great Moe and his mom, Grace at senior night for teams at BC High. I learned from great leaders and coaches hockey 2012. that I try to emulate today with my own players. They all taught me to lead by example. That’s exactly my mother’s style. She’s a hands on leader. She knows what it takes to make sure change happens. I think the BC High community is fortunate to not only have such a great leader, but someone that is genuine, compassionate, and committed to the mission.

One thing about my mother is that she always has a plan and when things get hectic she keeps her cool and handles it. I will never forget a saying my grandfather would tell her, “Gracie, it’s not the crisis, it’s how you handle the crisis with strength and resolve.” Her passion for others to succeed is something that both my brother and I have been on the receiving end our whole life.

Be Humble. I can honestly say I am so humbled to be the son of the first female BC High President. She will always put the mission and institution first, and she carries a genuine sense of caring and compassion for each person she meets. It could be the president of a company or a new 7th grader; they will get the same amount of attention and kindness. I am proud as an alumnus because with her in office the possibilities are endless.

Have Fun. Some of my favorite memories of my time at BC High were spent playing sports. On the football field, we won the Super Bowl in 2011 and I was fortunate enough to play at Fenway Park for Frozen Fenway with the hockey team. My freshman baseball coach was social studies teacher, Nick Argento. He was passionate in the classroom and on the field. Nick cared about the little things that we were dealing with as students, players, and teammates. I remember being on the freshman baseball team when Coach Argento taught us the guidelines called “The Pyramid of Success” this technique held us accountable but also made playing baseball fun. I still use this method today with my players.

To me, BC High is not just getting a strong leader in Grace Cotter Regan (otherwise known as Moe’s mom) but one who knows how to handle adversity and keep a cool head despite it. My dad, brother, our whole family, and I are extremely proud of her, but if he were still alive, my grandfather would be the happiest and proudest father around. He was my mother’s role model and hero, and I know how important this would be to him.

Becoming Global Citizens The Hyde Center for Global Education started the 2017-2018 school year with a flurry of global activity! In August, the Peretti Scholars conversational Spanish program launched with 16 students. The Scholars were paired with Spanish speaking mentors in the community, attended supplemental Spanish classes to enhance their conversation skills, and have experienced cultural field trips in the Greater Boston area – excelente! This fall, the Hyde Center also welcomed new exchange partners from St. Aloysius in Glasgow, Scotland for a week in October. The campus was buzzing because the Glaswegian visit overlapped with students from Belvedere College in Dublin, Ireland, now in its eighth consecutive year.

The Thanksgiving holiday held special meaning for 17 students that traveled to Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (NPH) in Parramos, Guatemala. Finally, in December seven students traveled to Kolkata, India to participate in an International Festival of the Spoken Word. BC High was honored to be the only school from the United States invited to join in this prestigious event!

Looking ahead to next semester, the Hyde Center is eager to continue the exchanges with Tanzania, China, Ecuador, and Argentina.

Additionally, excitement is building to send the first group of students to Kigali, Rwanda. In total, the Hyde Center is offering 17 different international programs for students this year – the world is indeed our home!

Celebrating 10 Years On September 13, 2007, a crowd gathered outside the entrance

of Walsh Hall to celebrate the opening of the Arrupe Division.

The middle school for seventh and eighth-grade boys was named for Father Pedro Arrupe, SJ, the 28th Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Fr. Arrupe, SJ was an outspoken advocate for education and social justice. He was also the first to articulate the Jesuit ideal of working as ‘men for others.’ “In his honor and motivated by his selfless example, we dedicate the Arrupe Division today,” said Vice Principal of the Arrupe Division, Robert Hamblet, during the dedication. Then President Bill Kemeza promised that the Arrupe Division would be a place for future generations of BC High students not only to “find their place in the world,” but also to develop into “generous and just men.” The Arrupe Division has exceeded those expectations. This pedagogical method of teaching, coupled with supportive advisory and spiritual formation programs, allows students to develop into “men for others.”

More than 1,500 students have entered the Arrupe Division since the 2007-2008 academic year. Since the very first year, the principles of innovation and creativity have been the hallmarks of the Arrupe Division. Building on this foundation, new areas such as the Makerspace and dedicated fine and performing arts expansions complement programming such as robotics, specialized music

classes, and Manressa (spiritual exploration program) to allow further development of unique interests and collaboration among classmates. The rigorous academic program challenges the boys to think and develop intellectual skills while the collaborative team teaching model enhances the student experience. One such example is the City Project. This interdisciplinary approach among the seventh-grade social studies, science, and English classes examines a vast array of topics from population growth to lifestyle inequities. Students learn best when they connect what they learn to the world and themselves. Instead of simply reading about energy, pollution, and transportation challenges, students create cities to make personal connections to the global problems that people face. The City Project gives students the opportunity to learn 21st-century skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, creative thinking, public speaking, and analytical. As the Arrupe Division welcomes students for its second decade, there continues to be a palpable enthusiasm from students and faculty alike.

Advancing Technology The

HoloLens is an augmented holographic computer built into a headset that allows the user to see, hear, and interact with holograms within an environment such as a classroom. It interjects virtual elements into your vision – think of the scene from Star Wars where a hologram of Princess Leia appears asking Obi-Wan for help. BC High is able to utilize this cutting-edge technology in the classroom due to a generous grant from the JetBlue Corporation sponsored by Marty St. George ’82, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been a strong advocate of technology to ensure BC High stays ahead of the curve. “Thanks to Mr. St. George’s generous donation, I am getting special recognition from colleges during the application process for a skill that I want to pursue beyond high school,” said Giovanni Cardillo ’18, who has been using the technology.

In the classroom, computer science teacher, Morgan Souter is having a lot of fun with the lens, “Using this device was a great way for the students in my computer science classes to experiment with some of the most advanced technology available. Not only did they get to test out its capabilities, but they were able to dig into its underlying programming structure

and get a feel for how to design and build an augmented reality app.”

Wrapping Joy for Those in Need The tradition of adopting families for Christmas through My Brother’s Keeper began with the Arrupe Division 10 years ago and has grown to include the entire community the past several years. From co-curricular clubs and athletic teams to departments and the President’s Office, the desire to give back is apparent with the more than 800 gifts collected for the 63 families BC High adopted this year.

The magic of the season begins with a wish list from the adopted family. This list travels like a letter to Santa from My Brother’s Keeper to BC High. More than 57 clubs, teams, departments, and 15 Arrupe Division homerooms which participated in this year’s act of giving embody the value of “Men and women for and with others” in our community and beyond.

What Makes a Loving Community?

On November 21, the BC High community came together to

hold the first schoolwide Ignatian Values Day. The focus for the day was “What Makes a Loving Community?” and had both individual and institutional goals for all that participated.

Beginning with a prayer service in the McNeice Pavilion, a church in the round was created, with the bleachers pulled forward and seating surrounded a very small stage set only a few feet off the ground. The choir sat closest to the stage and when the opening hymn began, they simply rose from their seats and began to sing. The center-piece of the service was a conversation between four seniors, Danny Abraham, Kunchok Dingyon, Braeden Mahoney, and Jack Murray.

Guided by religious education teacher, Jillian Maxey, each student represented a different belief system – Christian Pentecostal, Buddhism, Judaism, Roman Catholicism. Their conversation revolved around how BC High has influenced them in their own religion. It was a reflective moment to witness how our Ignatian values enable each of us to act more lovingly.

After the prayer service, students broke into workshops that were both interactive and reflective. The first workshops were focused on how individuals have created loving communities at BC High, at non-profits, at global and local institutions.

Presentations were given by faculty and current students, as well as over twenty guest speakers. Topics ranged from caring for cardiovascular patients in Rwanda with Team Heart, nurturing to the “whole person” of developmentally disabled adults with the L’Arche organization, to learning about the many ways BC High students have found loving communities in their work

here and abroad. Former Senator Linda Dorcena Forry P’22 shared her experience of love through public service while President Grace Regan P’12 met with student leaders to discuss ways the school could carry out the lessons of the day. The second workshop gave students a chance to participate in activities such as meditation, yoga, painting, or letter writing.

The student body experienced powerful presentations, including Tom Hermanowski of Aadapt Inc., who shared his personal story of finding God during his journey to recovery from alcoholism, and Minding Your Mind’s stellar speakers Jordan Burnham and Carl Antisell presenting on mental health. These activities enabled students to reflect on how love is shown in our community and the world.

The day ended with the first pep rally in 16 years to celebrate the diversity and accomplishments of our clubs and teams. Fans enjoyed performances by the Hip Hop Dance Club, Drumline, as well as competitions that pitted mascot against mascot and students against faculty. It was a great day to celebrate our shared Ignatian beliefs and build a loving community at BC High.

These activities enabled students to reflect on how love is shown in our community and the world.

Empowering Students to Stand Up for Justice The 20th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Service, led in its entirety

by students, was both spiritual and moving. Honoring Dr. King and his legacy, the community gathered together in prayer around the themes of justice and Christian ecumenism. The idea of “Standing up for Others” was more than just a topic for this year’s speakers, it was a call to action.

Students from the Black and Latino Student Union invited Pastors Mona and Matthew Thompson P’18, from the Jubilee Christian Church of Boston and Stoughton to lead BC High in prayer and The Honorable Serge Georges ’88 to recount his experience as a student of color at BC High.

After a heartfelt introduction by their son, Matthew Thompson ’18, Pastors Mona and Matthew Thompson reminded students that a faith that does justice is at the center of the mission of BC High. “In every obstacle lies a great opportunity for someone to rise, like Martin Luther King, and be a ‘man for others’ to be a leader. Someone that is concerned for the needs of others,” proclaimed Pastor Matthew Thompson in his sermon. The energy remained high when Pastor Mona Thompson addressed the group about complacency. “It is great to attend a school with high morals, a school that promotes being a ‘man for others,’ but if you don’t apply an action to what you say, it is irrelevant.” She urged the young men in the audience to not only stand up for women and the marginalized but to stand with them in support.

The message was driven home with an emotional reflection by Serge Georges that focused on being accountable and speaking up when you experience inequality. He wanted the BC High community to remember three things, “Be somebody, do something, and say something, because all too often being silent is convenient and usually the easier route.” Georges shared that his strength to stand up to adversity was fueled by his BC High friendships. His brothers “always had his back when he needed them.”

My BC High Story When Boston College High School began the search for a new president almost two years ago, the school’s search committee set out to find a leader with a proven track record of success in Jesuit institutions. Someone who could steward institutional traditions and work collaboratively with stakeholders to affect necessary change.

Someone who could direct fundraising and tell an authentic and engaging institutional story.

Someone who could lead BC High into the future while honoring its past.

Only one person checked all the boxes: Grace Cotter Regan P’12. e

My BC High Story

Of course, Regan is no stranger to BC High. The daughter of the legendary football coach, teacher, and guidance counselor Jim Cotter ’55, she has been a presence on Morrissey Boulevard much of her life. But is wasn’t that connection that sold the search committee on Regan. Rather, it was her deep experience as a leader in Catholic educational institutions that cemented her hiring.

Regan’s resume speaks for itself: Most recently, as Head of School at St. Mary’s High School in Lynn, she led the independent Catholic school, completing a $20 million fundraising campaign and enhanced the school’s curriculum and programs. As Executive Director of Advancement at the New England Province of Jesuits, she modernized the province’s fundraising, marketing and branding operations while creating new outreach programs to young professionals and business leaders. Earlier in her career, a tenure as Executive Director of Boston College’s Alumni Association, she was responsible for leadership and management of a network of more than 150,000 BC alumni around the world.

But the breadth of Regan’s experience is more than just professional.

The path that led her to BC High is marked by a deep commitment to Ignatian values and spiritual formation. She was a Jesuit International Volunteer in Belize, a country to which she returned years later to lead a group of Boston College students in the Arrupe International Program. She also holds a master of arts degree in pastoral ministry and spirituality from Boston College’s School of Theology and Ministry, a master of education degree from the University of Vermont, and certificates in Catholic leadership development from the Mendoza School of Business at the University of Notre Dame and the Roche Center for Catholic Leadership at Boston College.

“I see BC High as the capstone of my vocation,” Regan says. “Everything I’ve done professionally so far has led me to this. Coming back to BC High, it all makes sense.”

Looking Ahead As Regan becomes the 28th president of BC High, she is a change agent arriving in transitional times. Across the country, independent schools—and Jesuit schools in particular—are searching for new ways to fulfill their educational mission and remain accessible to the diverse communities they serve. BC High, Regan says, is no different, and her priority as president, is to lead the school while remaining faithful to its historic Ignatian mission.

t was a top priority of the Search Committee to recruit an outstanding sitting president, steeped in Jesuit traditions, committed to the mission and with a demonstrated track record of success. BC High is truly blessed that Grace not only more than exudes each of these criteria, but an added bonus is that Grace has been inextricably linked to the BC High family since birth. he Archdiocese of Boston is blessed by Boston College High School’s longstanding mission of providing boys and young men with superior academic, spiritual and personal formation. Grace Cotter Regan is an established leader in Catholic education who has a personal commitment to the well-being and success of every student entrusted to her care and guidance. Grace’s history at BC High, where she spent so much time during her youth learning from the example of her father Jim Cotter, provides us confidence that the school’s mission will be sustained and strengthened for the future. We look forward to the young men who graduate from BC High continuing to provide leadership for the Church, our communities, and our society.”

“Over the next ten years, there are going to be so many opportunities for BC High to grow,” she says. “This is definitely a Kairos moment for us. People need to be heard.

I think my style is suited to where we are as an institution – I’m a distributed leader and I have a collaborative spirit. I’m interactive and students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni are going to see me, whether the news is good, bad, or ugly, they’re going to see me.”

Regan’s first priority is to begin a school-wide strategic planning process that will map out BC High’s next eight years, not only physically – the campus, the composition of the student body, administration, and faculty – but programmatically, including curriculum and how BC High can maximize its position within the global network of Jesuit schools.

“The area around BC High is changing,” Regan says. “The Globe property has been sold and will be redeveloped. UMass

Boston is growing, the Santander Bank property next door was recently sold, and the Bayside Expo Center property is on the market. BC High has a lot of space but we also have a lot of needs. I’d love to see Loyola become a space for retreats and a home for the Hyde Center in addition to a Jesuit residence.

Those are the kinds of questions we need to deal with--what does the school look like, what does the curriculum look like, here in the 21st century.

“I keep thinking,” Regan says, “I won’t be bored.”

Breaking the Glass Ceiling As the first woman to hold BC High’s presidency, Regan recognizes the symbolic importance of her appointment, but didn’t think much about the glass ceiling until after she was named to the position.

“I didn’t think it was a big deal until some of the girls at St. Mary’s started saying ‘you broke the glass ceiling,’” she says. “I think it’s important to have a female role model for young men – a strong woman with a faith in action that reflects Ignatian values...I think one of my greatest strengths is that I’m the

That’s exactly what Regan has been doing over the last several months. Despite holding the head of school position at St. Mary’s through December, Regan has been a presence on Morrissey Boulevard and at many BC High events – part and parcel of her management philosophy that visibility counts.

That she is the first woman to be president of BC High, however, does not mean that she will be revisiting the debate on co-education. “That was something the

reporters asked me when the announcement was first made,” she says. Is she interested in engaging the question? “No,” she says unequivocally. “Right now, I’m focused on creating an effective strategic plan that allows us to fulfill our mission and educate young men in the Ignatian tradition.”

Formation for the Future Regan tells two stories about her earliest and most impactful formation memories – experiences that she says defined her and set her on the path that has led her to BC High.

“I was always kind of an old soul as a little kid,” Regan says. “When I was seven, I was in St. Francis Parish in Weymouth.

Through her efforts Ignatian Spirituality became household words in many homes throughout the New England Province.

I

began teaching in 1996 when Jim Cotter was athletic director, and we became dear friends.

Knowing Jim meant knowing his wife, his kids, his cousins, his buddies, and former players.

I witnessed Grace Cotter Regan over those years and saw her as a loving mother and devoted daughter. What always amazed me, though, was her energy, her positive attitude, and her courage for any new challenge. We are thrilled that she chose BC High as her next endeavor, and we know that her positivity, along with her love of BC High and her commitment to Jesuit education, will lead us into a very bright future. – English teacher Elizabeth O’Donnell

From there, Regan would graduate from Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, and then Boston College. Throughout she wrestled with a calling to religious life and, more broadly, a life in the service of others.

Boston College led her to a second critical experience, that of a Jesuit International Volunteer, teaching in Belize.

“I loved my experience in Belize,” she says. “I did discern that religious life was not for me, but I did know that I could have a vocation.”

“It was a defining moment for me,” she remembers, “because I realized my style is to be out and about with the people. That’s how I would define myself today – and to be in the sort of ivory tower of the President’s office at BC High would not be fulfilling or effective for me or for the mission of the school.”

Now, as much from the President’s office on the third floor of Loyola Hall as from the classrooms and common spaces of the BC High campus, it’s clear that Grace Regan embodies the strengths of BC High’s past, she also represents a fresh vision for its future. “I haven’t always known what my vocation would be,” Regan says, “but I knew if I trusted in myself and in God, it would end up in full circle.” n

My BC High Story was Formed in Tanzania | BY TROY SALMANS ‘18, HYDE SCHOLAR |

The BC High Hyde Global Scholars Program provides students with opportunities to demonstrate exemplary cultural competence, exceptional communication skills, significant awareness of the interconnectedness, and a passion to become engaged citizens of the world. To be take part in the program students must apply by the end of their sophomore year and participate in international travel, show a commitment to a second language, and expand their concrete knowledge on global issues.

Hyde Scholars will codify their learning by participating in a cohort research project, leading on-campus and community events, and reflecting on their personal journey of what it means to be citizens of the world.

S

he harbors seven children that she found on the street. Losing her job and going to jail are just a few possible punishments she could face.

She spends the meager shillings on them and her doddering mother, but never herself. She wears the same tattered clothes so that her children have books for school. She works and lives in a house that is not her own, a house built and run solely for the good of others: a volunteer house. She walks miles, with beat shoes on dusty dirt roads, just to see her family. She toils every day to provide shelter, food, and clothing for her kids.

At the volunteer house, she watches, late into the night, not allowed to eat dinner until every volunteer has been fed. Every day, she does the laundry for those helping in the local hospital or at the orphanage. Every week, she is given only a few hours to herself, yet she still dedicates that time to grocery shopping or spending time with her mother and the children in her own house. She loves with her whole heart and cares for children that others have abandoned. Her life is hard, but she continues to wait on others, never focused on herself. Her name is Ava; she lives in Moshi, Tanzania.

I lived in this volunteer house last summer. Ava was the housekeeper, the cook, the guard, and the nurse. After long days and tiresome work, I would listen to her tell stories about her life. She had the greatest

of humility in her voice as she told me about her kids, her mother, and her childhood.

I could tell Ava that I am writing this essay about her, but she would not care. She does not need recognition for the good she does. What Ava does will not change the world. It will not end child poverty. Those are not Ava’s goals, nor do I believe they even cross her mind. More than anyone I have met, she understands the basic needs of humanity and dedicates her life to providing those needs for others. Her kindness to all was constantly visible, Ava’s eyes would light up at the sight of us walking along the dirt road to the house each evening; her smile and outstretched arms always welcomed us back. It is remarkable, in the world we live in today, to be so welcoming to those she does not know well. Her life is full of unfamiliar faces coming and going with the seasons, short bonds built, and brief kindnesses shared. Ava works every day to give hope to seven children, who would not last a month on their own.

She works every day for a justice that is not measurable.

Ava has never traveled more than 100 miles from where she was born.

However, to me, she embodies all the key attributes of a Hyde Scholar. She is bilingual. She was born speaking Swahili, yet, through her work and for her children taught herself English. She represents and is an ambassador of her family and village as a “woman for others.” With every new volunteer in the house she learns more and more, broadening her own perspectives. Her project is lifelong and far from simple. Seven lives depend on the completion of her fully hands on project. However, this is no project to her, it is her everyday life. Her personal narrative is the story of her life. A young woman with a long life ahead of her, her story is far from over. Ava is an inspiration to me, a representation of the selfless life I wish to live.

My journey to become a Hyde Scholar has entailed, months in China and France, weeks in Ireland, days working and learning new languages and on a cohort research project, and hours listening to speakers and engaging in my community. However, minutes shaped my understanding of what it means to be a Global Citizen. My interactions with Ava taught me the greatest insecurities our world has and that one simple life, dedicated to making a difference, can make a real change. Without my growth over the last four years at BC High and becoming a Hyde Scholar, I do not believe I would have been as globally informed and taken the time to spread knowledge, more importantly real-life stories, like hers, that are crucial to creating a brighter future.

All told, guests were entertained with over a dozen acts by the Eureka Ensemble and Boston Symphony Orchestra String Quartet, and a variety of BC High groups including the Concert Band, Dever Players, Liturgical Musicians, and Chamber Choir.

The evening showcased the best of what BC High and the greater Boston community has to offer. It was an experience that displayed the wide reach theater has had in attracting talent from student stars to seasoned professionals. The variety of the program echoed the multitude of experiences offered to students over the past ten years. In his remarks, former President Bill Kemeza noted that the arts center was built as a windowless theater, but that the space has functioned as a window to many places. Students have used Bulger Theatre as a window to observe and participate in stories on the global, national, state, city, and school levels. They have listened to missionaries from across the world and community service volunteers from across the street. They have lost themselves in dramatic performance and song and used the stage of Bulger Theatre not just as a window to this world, but to fantastic and imagined worlds as well.

The gathering in October was not only in honor of the ten-year anniversary of Bulger Theatre, but its significant renovation. The theater’s acoustics and lighting were improved thanks to Mr. Bulger’s continued generosity, ensuring that students have access to some of the best performing arts resources. There was no better way to display these new additions than the selection of groups on the program.

BC HIGH GOLF TEAM WINS STATE TITLE FOR THE FIRST TIME

By Jack Balboni ’20 | When school started in September, Coach Chris Hayes ’85, P’17 was very optimistic about the upcoming golf season for the BC High Eagles. He had one goal, win a state championship.

The talented team suffered losses and early lows in the season, but Coach’s view never changed. He remained optimistic that this team would be the first in BC High golf history to win a state championship. “Lots of teams last year were senior led, but we weren’t.”

The team was returning star golfer Nate Ingram ’19 who won the 2016 individual player title as a sophomore. The Eagles were also returning eight players from last year’s team, including rising star Jack O’ Donnell ’20.

After winning the sectional title on October 23 at Ponkapoag golf course in Canton, MA, the team had to wait two weeks until the state championship tournament that featured 16 teams. But when the day of the tournament rolled around, the Eagles were more than ready.

Joe Paolucci ’20, who played a pivotal role in the Eagle’s season, recalled, “We had played the course a few times prior, so we knew what we were going up against.”

Even with the good preparation, the Eagles were going to have to bring their A game in order to win. In the state championship tournament, each team takes the top four scores out of their six players. BC High’s four top scores were from O’ Donnell (69), Ingram (73), Paolucci (79), and Strauss / Robards (83). With the match wearing down, BC High and rival St. John’s Shrewsbury were neck and neck. But pivotal birdies from Paolucci and Ingram on the second to last hole turned out to be the crucial plays that pushed the Eagles over the edge and to their first state championship in program history.

Not to be overshadowed, the entire Eagles team played well. “We had a lot of depth all year, and it showed today,” recalled Paolucci. “The strength of our team won this championship.” The Eagles, led by Coach Hayes and Guerin Miller, have finally brought home a state championship to Morrissey Boulevard.

BREAKING BREAD BEFORE THE REGATTA For the past five years, the BC High rowing team led by Coach Steve McKiernan has invited other Jesuit secondary schools to campus before the Head of the Charles Regatta for Mass and a meal. This year, they hosted Saint Ignatius High School, St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy, Fairfield Preparatory, Fordham Preparatory School, St. Joseph’s Preparatory, Gonzaga College High School, Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, McQuaid Jesuit, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, and Saint Peter’s Preparatory for breakfast in the Hajjar Dining Hall. The tradition has grown from three schools and 30 athletes to 12 schools and 175 athletes.

The National High School Baseball Coaches Association has announced that Norm Walsh ’70 will be inducted into their Hall of Fame in November 2018.

The Baseball Coaches Association (BCA) provides services and recognition for baseball coaches and helps promote and represent high school baseball across the United States.

The current membership has coaches from every state sponsoring high school baseball.

To be considered for the Hall of Fame, a coach must have at least 25 years coaching experience, with 20 as a head coach, and a greater than .500 winning average.

“This is a very humbling honor especially when it comes from nationally recognized peers. However, all coaching achievements are the result of a confluence of many fortuitous circumstances not the least of which is longevity.

This does not happen without strong administrative support. Most significantly I have been blessed with many great assistant coaches, especially John Lynch ‘70, Nick Argento, Steve Healy ’81 and Charlie Drane. The staff and I have had the opportunity to coach players at BC High who have been and continue to be dedicated, hard-working and talented young men who have made our love of baseball their own. FALL SEASON WRAP-UP The Eagles finished off another successful fall athletics season, highlighted by the golf, football, and cross-country teams winning the Catholic Conference title and golf winning a state title.

FOOTBALL: The team went 10 – 1 and advanced to the play-offs with a tough loss to Catholic Memorial in the semi-final round. The Eagles finished strong with a win at Fenway Park for the annual Thanksgiving Day game against the Knights. The coveted Pumpkin Trophy was returned to BC High.

Making quite an impact his freshman year, former BC High star guard Carl Pierre ’17 has been a huge surprise for UMass, as he is the Minutemen’s secondleading scorer and ranks in the top 10 nationally in 3-point shooting percentage. Carl was a member of the Boston Herald Dream Team, won the Catholic Conference League MVP Award in 2017, and was a two-time conference All-Star selection. He finished his high school career as a 1,000-point scorer.

Walter Colantuono ’56 lives in Windham, NH with his wife, Noreen, and three children. He worked for 36 years at Bell Labs and AT&T, retiring in January 1996.

Mario Conway ’56 and his wife, Mary, have three daughters and two grandchildren.

Craig Dolan ’56 enjoys boating out of Sippican Harbor in Marion, MA with his six grandsons, his “future pallbearers.”

He spends four months every year in Vero Beach, FL. The Honorable James W. Dolan ’56 maintains that he is still waiting for his diploma, but in the meantime, had five children, and 10 grandchildren. Joan, his wife of more than 50 years, died in 2015. Jim was the Chief Justice at Dorchester District Court for over twenty-five years prior to his retirement. He is currently in practice at Dolan & Connolly in Dorchester.

Neil Moynihan ’56 lives on Washington Avenue in Cambridge doing pro bono work. He has two grandchildren, Liam and Aldwin.

Medal of Honor recipient Tom Kelley ’56 graduated from Holy Cross, entered the US Navy, where he served 36 years as a Surface Warfare Officer and has served as Massachusetts Secretary of Veterans Services. Jim Reilly ’56 recently lost his wife, Charlotte. He has three children, James A. Reilly, Jr., John H. Reilly, and Allison V. Buckley. He has five grandchildren, Conor, Madison and Jessica Reilly, and Sam and Rowan Buckley.

Joe Shields ’56 retired after 24 years of employment with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He also worked for the Department of Justice for seven years doing background investigations. A survivor of prostate cancer, Joe spends three months in Colorado with his daughter and family. Joe is living in Walpole, MA. He has five children and 11 grandchildren.

Dave Twomey ’56 Professor at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. He is in his 49th year of teaching Business Law and Labor Law. He lives in Squantum, MA, has three children and one grandchild.

Fritz Scheuren ‘58 retired from his position of Editor-in-Chief of the Statistical Journal of the International Association for Official Statistics.

BC High was honored to recognize Lt. Col. Brian Sullivan ‘63 (Ret) with The James Cotter ‘55 Courage Award. Brian served 23 years in the United States Army (Active, Guard, and Reserve). He is a Vietnam veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star, as well as the Massachusetts National Guard Medal of Valor for a life-saving action, at the risk of his own life. Brian’s second career was as a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Special Agent. He is active with veterans’ issues in the town of Plymouth and currently serves as a Vet to Vet counselor at the Brockton VA. Serving as a Senior Fellow with the American Leadership and Policy Foundation, Brian continues to work on aviation and nuclear security issues.

The 60s Dennis Hanlon ‘61 ran the Falmouth Road Race for the 25th year in a row this past August.

The Senate recently confirmed General Joseph Dunford, Jr. ‘73 for a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dunford became chairman on October 1, 2015, and continues to receive high praise from Republicans and Democrats alike.

After 21 years of dedicated service to the College of William and Mary, Terry Driscoll ‘65 will be retiring as the athletic director. In his tenure, William and Mary has won a leaguebest 114 Colonial Athletic Association championships, 118 teams have had NCAA graduation rates of 100 percent, and the college has been awarded 67 scholar athlete awards from the CAA.

Currently, he runs CODE 51 music, which supplies live music from duos to large bands for concerts, events, and fundraisers.

Deputy Director for Catholic Charities Stephen Fulton ‘83 was able to welcome classmate Dennis Lehane ‘83 as the inaugural speaker for the “This is Our Community” breakfast series sponsored by Catholic Charities.

Mark “Tony” Sullivan ‘79 was inducted into the BC High Athletic Hall of Fame. Tony was a four-year athlete on the Soccer Team and a three-year athlete on the Track Team. In his senior year Tony, the team’s MVP, helped the Soccer Team reach a 9-3-0 record and earn a seat in the state tournament. His tireless tenacity and quiet intensity led the soccer team to many victories and contributed to his achievements on the track. An impressive performance on the 1978-1979 Winter Track Team included posting a 9:38 Two-Mile at the State Coaches Invitational and a 4:28 Mile later in the season.

The 90s Massachusetts State Representative from Quincy Tackey Chan ‘91, has recently been appointed House Chair of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure.

This committee deals mainly with matters concerning consumer credit, consumer protection, issuance of licenses for the sale of alcoholic beverages, and the registration of various trades or professions.

As part of BC Hire, our internship program, members of the BC High Business Club met with Ted Dalton ‘91, Mike Corcoran ‘12 and Nick Alberti ‘10 of the Celtics. They discussed the business side of the Celtics organization including analytics, corporate and community partnerships, sales and marketing. Students then watched the Celtics defeat the Nuggets 124-118 at TD Garden.

Brendan Slattery ‘92 retired from the Marine Corp as a First Sergeant after 22 years of service. His service included two tours of duty in Iraq during which he was awarded a Purple Heart and one tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Jim Curtis ‘94 released his new book, “The Stimulati Experience: 9 Skills for Getting Past Pain, Setbacks, and Trauma to Ignite Health and Hapiness” which is currently being sold through Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

Sean Joyce ‘96 was inducted into the BC High Athletic Hall of Fame. Coach Cotter ’55 called Sean “possibly the best defensive player” he had ever coached. In his senior year Joyce was Tri-Captain of both the football and basketball teams. He was a Globe All-Scholastic and Catholic Conference All-Star, as well as being elected the 1995 Football MVP by his peers. Sean led team in tackles as a safety and played RB and WR on offense. Joyce’s senior season included a legendary game against a #1 ranked Hasselbeck-led Xaverian squad that Coach Cotter called “the greatest game [he] had ever been involved with in 36 years of coaching.”

Arvin Iracheta-Vellve ‘99 graduated from UMass Medical School this past fall with a PhD in Immunology. He recently discovered a new protein that will play an important role in finding cures for liver disease.

Joe Callahan ‘01 was inducted into the BC High Athletic Hall of Fame. One of the state’s top defensemen, Joe scored five goals and fifteen assists for a 20-point senior season. As captain, he led the squad to a 14-5 regular season and 5th seed in the Super Eight Championship. Along the way Joe’s physical presence and offensive skill earned him All-State honors, Catholic Conference MVP, HNIB Best Defenseman, as well as Globe, Ledger, and Herald All-Scholastic honors. He was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes #70 overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and would go on to spend ten years in the NHL and AHL.

Daniel Vannoni ‘01 has a new startup, Housequarters, providing services and advice for everything residential real estate, including brokering, insurance, all home maintenance and improvement services, and small condo association management via an online dashboard. He recently launched to homeowners in eastern Massachusetts.

Ralph Gillis ‘02 was recently promoted to associate at the firm Roberts, Carroll, Feldstein & Peirce, Inc. He will be focusing on banking and corporate law.

Chris Aiello ‘03 married Daniela Carrillo, originally from Valencia, Venezuela on May 12, 2017. They are living happily in Winthrop, MA. Chris also recently joined the General Counsel’s Office for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services.

A baseball star at BC High, Alex Hassan ‘06 was inducted into the BC High Athletic Hall of Fame. As a senior Alex helped lead his team to the DI South Sectional Championship with outstanding pitching and explosive offense. A Catholic Conference All-Star, he could always be counted on to deliver- including helping secure Coach Norm Walsh’s 400th career victory. A dream come true, he was selected out of Duke University by the Boston Red Sox in the 20th round of the 2009 draft.

Hassan was called up from Pawtucket in 2014 becoming only the third BC High graduate, and first in nearly 20 years, to play in a Major League game.

A four-time state champion and the first athlete in the history of the school to start on three Division I state championship teams, Bill Kiley ‘09 was inducted into the BC High Athletic Hall of Fame. He won backto-back titles on the Baseball Team his junior and senior year, captured the Super Eight at the Garden as a sophomore, and bested the Brockton Boxers in the Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium his senior year. Bill served as a quarterback, first baseman, and defenseman in his time on Morrissey Boulevard, but the most important role he played was being a strong teammate and leader.

Corey Thomas ‘09 was inducted into the BC High Athletic Hall of Fame. As a senior Corey was the undisputed leader of a State Championshipwinning Winter Track Team. He broke the 28-year-old state record for high jump with a height of seven feet and one-half inch. Corey advanced to the National meet where he placed fourth and seventh in the high jump and sixty meter hurdles, respectively. The Boston Globe called Corey “perhaps the best high school high jumper ever in Massachusetts.” He would go on to win an NCAA D2 National Championship in his sophomore year at Stonehill.

Ryan Fahey ‘11 began medical school at New York Medical College. He received and accepted a full scholarship from the U.S. Army and was recently commissioned as a Second Lieutenant with the Army Reserves.

Alex Vannoni ‘03 has moved back to Boston and started a new role as Chief of Staff to the President of the Consumer & Health Services division at Aetna.

Tim Manning ‘04 of the Manning Personnel Group presented at the BC Hire Resume Writing Skills workshop held at the end of summer. College age alumni were invited to receive one on one consultation on how to include recent internships on their resumes.

The 2010s Dana Bartie ‘10 began working fulltime as a real estate professional with Key Realty Group in Boston, where he specializes in Luxury Leasing and Sales. Bartie completed his Master’s in Business Administration from Curry College this past August.

Dan Ford ’10 completed his training at the police academy in Plymouth and was sworn in for the Dedham Police department on December 1.

This past summer, Mike Normant ‘03 led a group of some of the states top high school basketball players on a trip through Europe. They competed with teams from various cities across Europe, with the goal of having the kids improve upon their basketball skills, and learn about themselves. Among the players

Ryan Sweeney ‘15, with the help of two of his friends from Dorchester Youth Hockey, continue to raise money for families in need through an annual hockey tournament. In two years of running the tournament in Dorchester they have raised a combined $21,000.

Justin McGaffigan ‘16 helped the United States Merchant Marine tennis team to a 10-5 season for 2016-17.

McGaffigan led the Mariners with 12 singles wins and was chosen to the 2017 All-Skyline Conference, second team as a freshman.

Caye Tittmann ‘16 has recently made a name for himself in the hiphop music world. His breakthrough single ‘Coma’ has more than 4 million streams on Soundcloud and Spotify, as well as accumulating a large fan base on the college circuit. Caye hopes to use his music as a means to make a difference in the lives of others.

On December 4, students of Latin and Greek attended the annual Latin Christmas Carols celebration at Brown University. The program has been run since the 1940’s and involves Brown professors reading scenes from the Nativity in Latin, Greek, and Sanskrit.

Attendees then sing carols in Latin in response to the readings. The students dined at a traditional Greek restaurant and met with alumni Ryan McIntyre ‘17, Jack O’Donnell ‘16, Chris Young ‘16, and Dr. Mark Wright ‘03.

Faculty and Staff Notes BC High is pleased to welcome our newest faculty and staff members who joined us at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.

Elisa Antonuccio is teaching Spanish in the high school. In addition to a law degree from Universidad Central de Venezuela and Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, she has 15 years of teaching experience.

Marilee Bennis is teaching social studies in the Arrupe Division. Marilee has a BS in Secondary Social Studies Education from Boston University and a MEd in Moderate Special Needs Education from Boston College, and has 10 years of experience teaching middle school social studies.

Karen Celano joined the religious education department. Karen earned a BA from John Hopkins University and MTS from University of Notre Dame, where she was also a teaching fellow for undergraduates.

Seasoned guidance counselor, Jennifer Hornby, has joined the Arrupe guidance office. She has a BA in Psychology from Fairfield University and a MS in School Counseling from Southern Connecticut State University.

The religious education department welcomes Tom Jackson. Tom has an AB in Theology from Harvard University and MA in Theology form the University of Notre Dame.

Kassaundra Przelomski is teaching physics in the high school. She earned a BS in physics from Bridgewater State University.

Matt King ’10 has returned to BC High to teach in the religious education department. Matt has a BA in religious studies from Holy Cross and a MEd in Alliance of Catholic Education (ACE) Program from University of Notre Dame.

Sarah Nolan joined the high school guidance department from the Montrose School where she was Director of College Guidance. She has a BA from Providence College and an MSW from the University of Maryland.

Religious education teacher Jennifer Manning, her husband Tim ‘03 welcomed their third child, Clare on November 11.

Religious education teacher Jillian Maxey’s, Reflections from a Millennial Teaching Millennials was published in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Maxey is also a PhD candidate in comparative theology at Boston College.

Reverend Jim O’Neil, SJ celebrated 70 years in the Society of Jesus at the Jesuit Jubilee this past fall.

The Hyde Center for Global Education is pleased to welcome James Sennette to the team. He has a BA from University of Texas, Austin and Ed M from Harvard University.

James has taught French and English in Texas, Massachusetts, and abroad.

Kyle Swords is the newest addition to the guidance department. Kyle has a BA in Psychology from Providence College and MA in Counseling from Boston College.

Religious education teacher Peter Skipper P’09 retired from the BC High faculty this past summer.

Skipper was awarded the Paul Hunter ’53 Man for Others Award at this year’s Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony for his nearly 40 years of teaching, coaching, and mentoring.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Rector of the BC High community, Reverend Brian Conley, SJ recently celebrated 25 years in the Society of Jesus.

Working for more than 13 years in athletic administration, most recently at UMass, Boston, BC High welcomes Oderra Jones as the new assistant athletic director. He has a BS in Communications from Eastern Connecticut State University and MS in Sports Management from Sam Houston State University.

Whitney Koch is teaching biology and anatomy physiology in the high school. She has a BS in Neuroscience from St. Lawrence University and is pursuing a MEd at Boston College.

BC High celebrated the Mass of the Holy Spirit and used the occasion to welcome its newest members of the community, the class of 2021, 2023, transfer students, and new faculty and staff.

The service held special meaning because it was the first time BC High could officially welcome new President, Grace Regan P’12. Before offering the Call to Worship, President Regan took a moment to introduce herself and express her love and gratitude for BC High, “I look forward to our journey together over the next several years.”

In addition to recognizing our new community members, there were more than 180 special guests in attendance for Mass. For the second year, parents and grandparents were invited to a welcome coffee hosted by the Office of Advancement and the Parent Groups.

Thanksgiving Day Game at Fenway Park • November 21, at Fenway Park, Boston, MA For more than five decades, BC High has played Catholic Memorial in the annual Thanksgiving Day football game for the coveted Pumpkin Trophy. This year, the Eagles traveled to America’s most beloved ball park to play the Knights at Fenway Park. Nearly 350 alumni, parents, and friends gathered in Dell EMC Club to cheer on the Eagles to a 32-16 victory over their cross-town rivals.

Christmas Concerts • December 10, 2017 at BC High Friends and family were delighted and entertained on December 10 with performances by the Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Jazz Big Band, Chamber Orchestra, and special guests from Fontbonne Academy’s Select Chorus and Jazz Chorus. The audience was treated to many holiday favorites as the sounds of the season filled Hunter-Fahey Commons during the annual Christmas concert.

The Fontbonne Academy Jazz and Select choirs performed together with the BC High Chamber, Concert choir, and the Arrupe Youth Chorale, singing “Hallelujah”, under the direction of Mrs. Carol Fortier and Dr. Marina Rozenberg. They were accompanied by Dr. Yoojin Lee on piano and Tomas Summer ‘18 on guitar.

IN MEMORIAM LAWRENCE HYDE ’42 It is with heavy hearts that BC High announces the death of Mr. Lawrence Hyde, class of 1942. While Larry’s passing has certainly left a void in the BC High community, his life is one that will be remembered and celebrated worldwide. One of the many things that made Larry so special was that he had literally visited every country in the world. He did this by seeking out Jesuit priests, schools, and ministries during his travels.

He was a man of incredible faith, who later in life dreamed that students would have the same opportunities to explore the world that he had. In 2012, Larry graciously established the Hyde Center for Global Education, and BC High’s goal has been to honor Larry’s dream. In the weeks and months to come, BC High looks forward to celebrating Larry as the Hyde Center continues to grow in his memory. Larry will never be forgotten, and his legacy as a man with a great passion for the countries, cultures, and peoples of the world will live through BC High students forever.

One of my favorite quotes attributed to St. Ignatius is, “Go forth and set the world on fire.” To me, this is a call to do more and a call to serve. A number of years ago, I was asked to give a vocation talk at Boston College and, I opened the presentation with, “I grew up Jesuit. I just didn’t know it.” As I reflect on that experience and my recent appointment at Boston College High School, I realize the importance of our Jesuit, Catholic identity in the lives of our young men who are called to a faith that does justice.

As the opportunity to lead BC High became a reality, it was clear that along with this role came great responsibility and I consider it to be the capstone of my vocation. The Cotter and Regan BC High legacies are long and storied, but I needed to discern that I could be fully committed and open to the new stories, challenges, and opportunities on the peninsula. There is no question that the giants who have walked these hallowed halls are in my heart and guide me each day. Not a day goes by without a story referencing the legacy of Bill Kemeza, Jim Cotter ’55, Paul Hunter ’53, Ray Callahan, SJ and the religious and lay men and women who have shaped our history reminding me to stay true to the mission.

My short tenure on Morrissey Boulevard has been profound. It has been a privilege and a blessing to spend time with alumni, parents, benefactors, faculty, staff, Jesuits, and students listening to their BC High stories. Sharing in these moments of grace has made one thing clear – we are a vibrant community that needs to tell our story in a new way. The robust academic programming complemented by the spiritual and co-curricular growth opportunities differentiates the BC High story.

What does BC High look like in 2025? I prefer to frame our vision and priorities within the national Catholic benchmarks for schools: Governance and Leadership, Mission and Identity, Academic Excellence, and Operational Vitality. These ideals help us as a school to stay on mission and align vision, strategy, and resources. As we begin to plan for our sponsorship review this spring with the Northeast Province of Jesuits, we have an opportunity as a school to examine what we value and what our value proposition should be on the peninsula, in the Jesuit network, and the global community. This discernment process will animate our hearts and imagination and allow us to dream about what BC High should be in 2025.

One of my goals through this sponsorship review is to map the Graduate at Graduation. This Joseph Meschino ’18 focus would mirror a curriculum outline, but align academic, spiritual, co-curricular experiences with the mastery and competencies students will achieve as they meet our commitment to the Graduate at Graduation. To think that a BC High student can develop: spiritually – through Kairos and our service opportunities; globally – through the Hyde Center; and vocationally – experiencing an internship with an alumnus through BCHire. Those are differentiators and illustrate the Magis or “the more” of a BC High education.

Thank you for your warm welcome. I am humbled by your fidelity and your steadfast generosity to BC High. Simply stated, we could not do what we do without you. I look forward to seeing you at the Inaugural weekend May 3 and 4 and please continue to share your BC High story.
