Sean Brady is a Managing Director and Head of Product Development in capital markets at Credit Suisse in New York and serves as a Trustee Associate of BC High.

In addition to BC High, Sean studied at Riihiketo High School in Pori, Finland as a Rotary Exchange student. After BC High, Sean studied history of science at Harvard College with a year abroad at Lincoln College, Oxford. He then went on to study at Harvard Law School.

He worked briefly at a law firm in New York before joining Credit Suisse where he designs financial products for banks and other financial institutions.

He is also a founding partner of Goat Cottage Farm and Bakery in Westport, MA.

On graduation day we dressed up in fancy 1970’s tuxedos (did I mention that it was 1985?) to receive our beautifully embossed folders. We half expected to find real diplomas inside; after all, it was ‘only’ community service. It wasn’t as if we’d skipped a final exam.

Then, with a few blank slips of paper, BC High delivered one final lesson: at a Jesuit school being men for others is not an after school activity; it’s at the core of the educational experience.

An analogous lesson suffuses the teachings of the first Jesuit Pope, Francis. With an austere style and some remarkably candid statements, his papacy focuses our attention on our relationship with others, notably those less fortunate, and more recently on our relationship with the rest of God’s creation, in particular our natural environment. According to Francis “our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or secondary aspect of our Christian experience.”

Elaborating on this point, Pope Francis recently released the Church’s first encyclical letter focused specifically on the environment. Entitled Laudato Si, On Care for Our Common Home, the encyclical is a call to a profound “ecological” conversion, both an “interior, personal conversion” and a “community conversion.” As Francis writes, “an ecological conversion can inspire us to greater creativity and enthusiasm in resolving the world’s problems,” and in offering ourselves to God “as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable.”

“Resolving the world’s problems” was very much on my mind when I was a student at BC High; I imagined a life in politics (though, fortunately, some real world work experience on Beacon Hill dissuaded me).

Offering myself “as a living sacrifice” wasn’t exactly my priority at the time, but once I focused on community service, it helped me realize that we’re not going to resolve any problems, whether the world’s or our own, without a true spirit of sacrifice. And to develop that we need the connection to other people and to God that we get though service, through friendship, through being part of something bigger, such as the BC High community and the Catholic Church.

Recently, my sister, the mom of a current BC High student – Nolan Kearney ’18, and I bought a farm in Westport, Mass that we are slowly turning into an organic farm and bakery. Reading through “Laudato Si,” I was struck by how much of it is a not only theological but also common sense. Organic farming is all about understanding the earth and working with it, rather than trying to master it. If you do this, you begin to see glimpses of the magnificence of God’s universe in the humblest of places, just as community service can help you find God in the humblest of people.

In case you are wondering, I completed my service requirements in the summer after my attempted graduation and I’m fairly certain the rest of the group did as well. We eventually became proud graduates of BC High and, more importantly, fully fledged members of the BC High family, a community that continues to nourish us to this day.

congressional medal of honor

Of Service and Sacrifice On the morning of September 15, students, faculty, and staff,

gathered to watch as a Black Hawk helicopter carrying Congressional Medal of Honor recipients Tom Kelley ’56 and Gary Wetzel, touched down on the south side of campus. The guests of honor are part of an exclusive group of more than 78 living recipients of the highest American military honor. The group was in town for the annual convention of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. BC High was one of a dozen local area high schools to host recipients.

Kelley and Wetzel, sharing their stories of courage in the face of adversity, addressed the senior class and the Arrupe Division on the importance of “loyalty, teamwork, and above all, service to others.” “At BC High, we spend much of our energy and resources on the character formation of our young men,” says Vice Principal of Student Affairs Mike Brennan ’85, P’21, “Gary Wetzel and Tom Kelley validated the importance of this element of our educational mission through the reflections of their experiences. We hope to draw parallels between the life of service and sacrifice these men are living, to the opportunity that our students

pope francis visit

Coming to America Pope Francis, the world’s first Jesuit Pope, made his inaugural visit to the United States in September. BC High celebrated and honored this historic visit with several events both on campus and by sending students to the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia.

On campus, live viewing parties were set up for students for several of the events that happened during school hours. Students witnessed the Pope’s historic address to Congress as they watched it live in the Bulger Performing Arts Center. Classes also viewed the multi-religious service that took place at the World Trade Center.

In addition to on-campus activities, six BC High students and two faculty members joined more than 40 Jesuit high schools from the United States, Canada, & Puerto Rico on a pilgrimage to Philadelphia to take part in 2 Philly 4 Francis: Ignatian Pilgrims on the Journey from September 24-28.

Much like the Jesuit founder, St. Ignatius Loyola, a self-identified lifelong pilgrim, the students gathered in Philadelphia at St. Joseph’s Preparatory & the Gesu School to learn about, pray, reflect on, and celebrate our shared Jesuit and Catholic identity during the historic visit of the Holy Father.

Ignatian Values Day in the Arrupe Division On Tuesday, November 24, the Arrupe Division held their annual Ignatian Values Day and Turkey Trot.

This year’s Ignatian Values Day explored the Graduate at Graduation value of “Loving” with a particular focus on Service. Throughout the afternoon, students participated in several in-school service projects including writing holiday cards for the elderly, making blankets and scarves for the homeless, and creating bracelets and craft kits for hospitalized children. Students also had the opportunity to hear from teachers, high school students, and invited guests, about their intensive service experiences or service organization they’ve volunteered with either locally or abroad. Presenters shared how they became involved with the organization or experience, reflected upon its challenges and rewards, and discussed the ways in which it serves the people.

hyde center offers exchange to australia

“Good Day Mate” In November, Executive Director of the Hyde Center for Global Education Dan Carmody, faculty member Allison Rosshirt and guidance counselor Suzanne Wilzbach traveled to Sydney, Australia, as part of the exploratory team to organize a partnership between BC High and St. Ignatius College, Riverview. The trip not only marked the first time individuals from BC High explored the continent of Australia, but also the first partnership where BC High teamed up with another U.S. Jesuit school, Fordham Prep from New York City, to create a Hyde Center program.

N THE BOULEVARD concert choir visits the white house

A Very Presidential Christmas Singing Christmas music is common during the holidays, but for

the 25 Boston College High School Concert Choir members who sang in the White House on Monday, December 21, 2015, the experience was anything but ordinary! Each year, the White House invites select choirs from across the country to perform during the holiday season. This will mark the second time the BC High Concert Choir has performed at the White House, the first was in December 2006.

Under the direction of Dr. Marina Rozenberg, the choir rehearsed for months in preparation for this special event. With the White House dressed to the nines with towering Christmas trees, decorative snowflakes and giant glass ball ornaments, the mood could only be described as festive. “Performing pieces such as Mozart’s classical ‘Rondo A La Christmas,’ and a Christmas version of our

signature song, ‘Hallelujah,’ the White House halls were electrified with the sound of our voices,” recalled Sean Conor ’16.

On November 5, 2015, more than 100 members of the Boston College High School community joined the Keohane family to dedicate the

Cornelius J. Keohane ’51 Track.

Named in honor of Cornelius “Connie” Keohane and his remarkable running career, the track was made possible by the generosity of Connie’s brother, BC High Trustee J. Frank Keohane ’53.

“The new track will be an ideal venue to host statewide meets,” Head Track Coach John Normant ’64 remarked as he addressed the crowd. “We hope to have the prestigious Massachusetts Coaches Invitational at BC High. With the expansion from six lanes to eight and refurbished areas for jumping, BC High will have a greater home field advantage during the spring track and field season.”

The dedication included a loving tribute by Connie’s son, Neal. “This would be a proud day for my father. He and my mother instilled the characteristics of faith, conscience and compassion in their children.

We are proud to pass this legacy onto the next generation. My dad always spoke of the commitment to teamwork, hard work, respect and humility, all values reflected by BC High student-athletes when they practice and compete.”

ohn McQuillan, Jr. ’83 is not your typical environmentalist. This highly successful businessman and entrepreneur is the CEO and President of Triumvirate Environmental—a $120 million global environmental firm with over 600 employees. John founded the company when he was only 23 years old.

Today, Triumvirate Environmental is one of the fastest growing environmental firms in the Eastern United States.

Perhaps that is because John followed his own rules for success: Work hard, be competitive, get into something you are passionate about and become really, really good at it. After graduating BC High in 1983, he attended Bowdoin College where he double majored in biochemistry and government and legal studies, later earning a master degree from Harvard University in public administration.

At Bowdoin, John honed both the scientific skills necessary to launch his career in addition to expertise in the policy arena.

“Most of the work that we do, isn’t just technical innovation,” he told BC High Today. “It goes hand in glove with a nod towards policy. Policy can both enable and disable technology.”

Starting Triumvirate was relatively simple—he had identified a problem and sought out a solution. “Being an entrepreneur in the environmental industry 30 years ago was a relatively new career,” John remembers. “It was not a well worn path.”

Reimagining Recycling: Triumvirate Tackles Medical Waste

Somerville-based Triumvirate Environmental is an innovative waste management and environmental services firm. The company specializes in four vertical markets: Higher education, health care, life sciences, and industrial sciences.

Recently, John was invited to BC High as a guest lecturer to the environmental science classes. He shared with them an idea Triumvirate developed for recycling medical waste called the Red2Green Program.

The Red2Green Program offers hospitals a less expensive, sustainable regulated medical waste disposal alternative.

John explained to the students that medical waste, which typically involves a large amount of plastics, is “expensive and really pernicious to the environment.” The company’s research revealed that 1.6 billion pounds of regulated medical waste wound up in landfills each year.

Recognizing that 75% of that waste was plastic, Triumvirate set out to develop a sustainable cost-effective solution to this problem and began by learning more from their hospital and life sciences partners.

The process Triumvirate developed allows for regulated medical waste to be disinfected through a sterilization process.

After the thorough process to sterilize, shred, compound and extrude is completed, the waste is no longer considered hazardous waste but instead a “benign raw plastic.”

Once the material is converted into raw plastic, it may be destined for a new future.

The plastic is repurposed into speed bumps, farm tools, benches, portable toilets and more. In addition to helping save the planet, McQuillan shared that clients reported cost savings of up to 30% and

that Red2Green helps companies meet their own recycling goals. In other words, Triumvirate is literally turning red into green.

To illustrate this process of sterilization and reutilization, John brought in samples for the students to pass around. Students hands immediately shot up in Cadigan lecture hall with questions, “Why is this recycled waste so light?” or “how many bags of waste would it take to build a park bench?” John noted, “I will judge the quality of my presentation by the amount of questions as he proceeded to answer.”

“Mr. McQuillan showed us bags filled with sterilized and processed medical waste which was soft and looked like confetti. He then showed us the finished material: a sturdy block that looked a lot like lumber.

Mr. McQuillan explained to us that it was the final product of the transformation of medical waste. This process changed harmful waste into building blocks that could be used for the construction of benches, portable toilets, and many other building materials.”

The mission of the Green Eagles team is to raise awareness for environmental issues and to empower fellow students, teachers and the BC High community in green initiatives, such as waste reduction, recycling, composting, energy conservation and pollution prevention.

Their first project was ambitious for the newly formed club who met over the summer to implement the classroom recycling project.

Every classroom on campus now has recycling bins for not only paper, but plastics and glass all of which are comingled in single stream recycling. “It is important that both students and staff recycle so that we can conserve resources and reduce the amount of waste we put back into the environment. Being in a Jesuit school, we are called to follow in the footsteps of Pope Francis, and St Francis of Assisi before him and care for creation,” remarked the Green Eagles moderator and science teacher Elena Drane. “Our students are really embracing the Pope’s message to care for the environment by starting at their school.”

Adopting a take action mentality the group has ambitious plans for the future. Their long term goals include composting and a roof top garden that produces enough food to share with local food shelters.

The group aims to “green” the policies and procedures to the extent that it is possible. And, the group hopes to educate and empower Continued on page 10

Looking Ahead at BC High’s Commitment to Sustainability Outside of his work with Triumvirate Environmental, John is actively involved in the environmental business community. He advises companies such as Next Step Living, Top Ten Media Corporation, Estate Carolina and Blue Wave Strategies as well as nonprofits Year Up and Just-a-Start House. He is a Trustee of Bowdoin College and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees at BC High.

John is most excited about his work with his alma mater and giving back to help make BC High a leader in sustainable practices. He is looking forward to expanding on several successful initiatives such as, LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for Cadigan Hall.

John was also encouraged by the recently launched student group—the Green Eagles (see following story) which will champion environmental responsibility on campus.

One initiative John is particularly eager to begin is a new master planning exercise. “BC High has a very significant physical plant in the city of Boston—the school is set on 49 acres—which is really a big footprint,” he said.

In 2016, BC High will embark on the campus planning exercise. “This is where we look across our program to identify what our current and future needs will be with regard to our building facilities and land use. We will examine all of those needs and develop a plan that helps us maintain our current facilities and add new projects in order to support our mission,” John explained. The exercise will take all of 2016 to complete.

A Jesuit Tradition of Compassion and Consciousness John’s commitment to sustainability is a prime example of leadership in the Jesuit tradition of raising consciousness and fostering compassion for the world. This is the engagement with the environment Pope Francis recently called for in his latest Encyclical—“Laudato Si” or “Praised be to You.” Continued on page 10

The Green Eagles Team, Continued In the Encyclical, Pope Francis touched upon many aspects regarding the current global ecological crisis, including the impact of poverty, consumerism, and the dangers of climate change to the natural world.

“Pope Francis views the environment through a clear lens of social justice,” John noted. “The industrial activities that enrich the lives of some people, put other people’s lives at peril. Our challenge is to slow or reverse these impacts to the environment and I, for one, agree.”

As someone who wants to go into the sciences as I inch closer to college, I found Mr. McQuillan’s presentation to be quite informative.

As the Owner and CEO of one of the best environmental science companies, Mr. McQuillan’s story showed not only me, but also my fellow classmates, the doors that can be open as a result of exploring the sciences. The recycled products that Triumvirate Environmental produces are innovative and environmentally sound. He was also kind enough to bring in examples of what is used to make these products. Lastly, Mr. McQuillan’s advice and encouragement about the college process and beyond resonated with me and my fellow classmates.

students and faculty to do what they can to help advocate and care for the Earth in their daily lives.

We discuss our concerns about the many issues of pollution, climate change and consumerism and the impacts of these on the planet.

More important are the issues of social justice created by these environmental issues. For example, climate change will increase the disparity between the “haves and have-nots” in the world. Climate change will impact the poorest and most vulnerable people the most.

This is due to the wealthiest nations and their actions or lack thereof.

Long Term Goals: With help from BC High’s new food service provider, Rebecca’s Café, the composting has started on a smaller scale in the faculty and staff dining room. “By starting with just faculty and staff, we are able to see what type of set up, labeling and space is needed to collect the left-

How to Divert Food Waste from Disposal: There are several ways you can divert school food waste from disposal. Factors include volume, cost, available resources, and participation. Schools can vermicompost! You can make a low cost “worm bin” and add small amounts of fruit and vegetable waste and watch the worms turn the material into vermicompost, the best type of compost there is! The Green Eagles team was given worms and a composting bin through a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. While we were not able to secure a space for the composting bin, the cafeteria, led by Rebecca’s Café has begun a large scale composting program that we are assisting with. By reaching out and educating their peers, the Green Eagles hope to take an active role in composting. The members will be attending education tables and walking through the cafeteria with barrels to encourage their peers to recycle and compost.

Composting is managing the decomposition process, through which naturally occurring soil organisms recycle nitrogen, potash, phosphorus, and other plant nutrients as they convert the material into humus.

Composting at schools can help students understand concepts such as decomposition and energy cycles, while reducing the amount of organic material going to landfills or incinerators.

Care for our Common Home Pope Francis, the namesake of a revered saint who displayed an uncommon concern for the gifts of nature, has issued a call to all who share the planet Earth to take special care with the “home the human family has received from the Creator as a common gift.”

In “Laudato Si” (“Praise be to You”), the first encyclical fully devoted to the environment, the pontiff writes, “Once we start to think about the kind of world we are leaving to future generations, we look at things differently; we realize that the world is a gift which we have freely received and must share with others…the world we have received also belongs to those who will follow us.”

That message has not been lost on students, teachers, and administrators at BC High where the emphasis on service is set at a high level, as expressed by a former Superior General of the Jesuit order, Peter Hans-Kolvenbach: “Students, in the course of their formation, must let the gritty reality of this world into their lives, so they can learn to feel it, think about it critically, respond to its suffering and engage it constructively. They should learn to perceive, think, judge, choose and act for the rights of others, especially the disadvantaged and the oppressed.”

That “gritty reality” speaks directly to what Pope Francis is asking everyone to do – “engage constructively” in preserving the home that God has made for us – and it was reflected in late October when students in the Arrupe Division’s

seventh grade held their service day by focusing on the notion that we all need to be “Stewards of the Earth” in aligning ourselves with the Pope’s environmental vision.

“The general format of the day,” said Amanda Adamczyk, coordinator of service & justice initiatives at BC High, “was a morning of active service outside the school with a follow up back on campus with classes viewing the CNN production of Morgan Spurlock’s “Inside Man: The United States of Trash.”

Following the documentary, Ms. Adamczyk said, “The students returned to their home rooms for a period of reflection – a key element of the process – on what the limited exposure to service meant to them in terms of the encyclical. As part of their reflecting, the boys in each home room

came up with a commitment to stop a bad practice, start a good one, or continue a good practice for the earth.”

As to the service itself, students spent the morning cleaning up at neighborhood areas such as Dorchester Park, Pope John Paul II Park, Paraclete Academy, Wollaston Beach, and Castle Island. As the students toiled at these sites, clad in BC High sweatshirts, they had time to ponder the meaning of their work.

Less than a stone’s throw away from the McNeice Pavilion, the BC High Makerspace has proved to house a zone of creativity and collaboration where students can bring their ideas into reality. Arrupe Division teachers can bring their entire classroom to the space during flex time. High school students can reserve time for classroom projects or visit on Wednesday afternoons for the Makerspace club.

bright and airy room opened at the beginning of the school year in a corner of the Arrupe Division. In the words of its mission statement, it was meant “to foster a maker mindset of growth.” Think of the rooms where students learned trades at public and private schools over the years, raiaw greatly the level of sophistication and purpose, and you have Makerspace at BC High, a recently introduced venture into the world of Do It Yourself (DIY).

The concept of makerspace is perhaps best captured if you think of this well-furnished room – desks full of electronic equipment, computer programs, arts and crafts, tools and high-grade hardware, even a 3-D printer – located in Walsh Hall as a DIY laboratory where students can gather to think and work creatively, to invent things, and to learn in all

manner of fashion – direct teaching, seminarlike discussions, and individualized projects.

A recent visit to the space showed an interactive seminar on a history project being led by an Arrupe teacher while nearby a 3-D printer was grinding away on a student’s design – a yo yo.

Casey has recruited friends to the first year club, “I was blown away. The space was incredibly well organized, thought out, and seemed a great substitute for the professional Makerspaces in Boston. I started coming to meetings every Wednesday, and I have been busily working on my projects there ever since.”

With the addition of this self-directed learning zone, BC High hopes the hands-on model, coupled with the tools and raw materials that support invention, provide the ultimate workshop for the tinkerer and the perfect educational space for individuals who learn best by doing.

Interaction among inventors fosters a highly collaborative learning dynamic that promotes multidisciplinary thinking and learning.

he 150th Anniversary Campaign has been a remarkable success, thanks to our nearly 300 campaign donors. We have raised almost $74 million and we are seeing that amount change daily.

The Campaign Leadership Committee continues to work hard in reaching out to new prospects to help us reach our goal.

The primary goal of the Campaign has been to increase the endowment which will allow all students to attend Boston College High School, regardless of their financial situation. Donors have established 31 new scholarships for an approximate total of $6 million. In addition to endowed scholarships for financial aid, five donors have established endowed funds to help specific areas of interest. Most notably, the Hyde Center for Global Education, which acknowledges and embraces the transformative nature of global experiences, 21st century learning, and the critical need to prepare students to be leaders in today’s global society.

Facilities have improved to accommodate the increasing demands of an active student body. The Cornelius Keohane ’51 Track was dedicated on November 5 and the Fr. Donald Monan, SJ Park is set to open in the late winter. These state-of-the art athletic venues will be home to hundreds of students each day. Cadigan Hall has quickly become the ideal study spot for our students, while musicians and artists would agree that having designated space for their craft challenges them to become better at what they do best.

And, to maintain the demands of an increase in financial need and overall operating costs of the school, the Fund for BC High has increased on an annual basis as well. Currently there are nearly 100 members of the Companions’ Circle, which accounts for approximately $1.5 million to the Fund for BC High over a five year period. This initiative allows BC High to anticipate and plan for the future and set realistic goals. Young alumni are encouraged to join the Companions’ Circle as well which is great news for the future of philanthropy at BC High.

The students, faculty, and staff are grateful to all donors to the 150th Anniversary Campaign and the commitment they have made to ensure BC High continues to educate young men, in the City of Boston, for another 150 years.

M

ichael MacNeill ’88 may have grown up in Randolph, MA and now lives in Dallas, TX, but Dorchester was home for much of his family. Frequently driving down Morrissey Boulevard as a young child, his parents would wonder out loud whether Michael could attend Boston College High School. To Michael, he saw this as a challenge that could not go unanswered.

“I will never forget how blown away I was with the level of academic and athletic talent within our student body when I showed up in September of 1984.”

This competitive spirit pushed him to excel in and out of the classroom. Like so many alumni, Michael credits the remarkable faculty with demanding excellence from their students, him included. “With the help of the faculty I was able to challenge myself and achieve more than I thought possible. I emerged a much more confident, mature, and compassionate young man.” He now sees everyday challenges as an opportunity to grow, personally and professionally. He feels he has the ability to form deeper relationships because of the Jesuit education he received at BC High.

After attending Boston College, Michael entered the world of finance and has worked for Fidelity Investments for the last several years as Senior Finance Director - Managerial Finance and Corporate Reporting. His profession gives him the capacity to be generous, but it’s the simple sentiment, “to whom much is given, much is expected,” that resonates most with him. He joined the Companions’ Circle as part of the 150th Anniversary Campaign because he is grateful for his education and feels blessed with the opportunities BC High provided to him.

The Stephen P. Hughes ’73 Scholarship

At the annual Scholarship Breakfast on December 8, a moving tribute was given by Charlie Flint ’73 announcing the Stephen P. Hughes ’73 Scholarship.

“Steve, in recognition of your accomplishments on behalf of our school, the Class of 1973 has endowed a $135,000 scholarship in your name. I am proud to tell you that 57 classmates contributed to the scholarship.”

As Steve took the stage, Charlie remarked on the bond between the class of 1973. “This brotherhood of The class of 1973. alumni includes many successful social workers, lawyers, doctors, educators, military leaders, firemen, policemen, businessmen, a judge, a priest and even, General Joe Dunford, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.”

Charlie defined why the class came together to honor Steve with this gift.

Steve was an active member of the class, playing varsity football and running track. Shortly after graduation from college he joined BC High’s faculty and also coached football at every level. He eventually moved from the classroom to administration. As his colleagues and family will attest he approached each day with a level of passion, enthusiasm, commitment and humility that only a person who truly relishes his job and embraces its mission can exert. He along with Bill Kemeza has been the architects of moving this school forward into the 21st century and positioning it as the preeminent Jesuit, Catholic secondary school in the country.”

In establishing this scholarship during the 150th Anniversary Campaign, Steve and his classmates will be able to help many generations of students afford a BC High education. My BC High Experience and why I believe a Legacy Gift is Appropriate David B. Hanson – Class of 1964

David considers himself truly blessed. He feels very strongly that BC High was the most transfor-

mative experience in his life and the best preparation he could have possibly had for a successful career. “The formation at BC High provided me the foundation for all that was to follow,” David described. This was brought back into focus for David at the 50th Class Reunion in 2014 as he had a chance to re-experience some of the “magic on the Boulevard.” David, and his wife Colleen, decided a planned gift would be a good way to ensure that future generations have the same transformational experience that he had.

The formation at BC High provided me the foundation for all that was to follow...

A “rocky road” is how David Hanson ’64 would describe the start of his BC High experience – after attending public schools in Watertown. “When I took the entrance exam,” remembers David, “I felt I had performed reasonably well – however, as the expected date for results came and went, there was no correspondence from the school.” After some time had passed, his mother called the school and was informed that there was no record of David having taken the exam! (For the record, he really did take it!). David was granted an opportunity to come for a “special” exam and, again journeyed alone on the trackless trolley to Harvard Square and then to Columbia Station. A week or so later the call came that he was “OK” and could join the class of 1964.

David’s experience on the Boulevard was eye-opening and mind expanding and he quickly came to appreciate the opportunity that he had been offered. David became a decent student, taking numerous courses in the sciences and math (at the expense of Greek) that prepared him well for a major in civil engineering.

Just a few weeks after graduation, David’s father passed away and he tried to convince his mother that he should stay at home, but she pushed him out the door to UMass Amherst where his BC High experience prepared him for college studies.

After college, David built a career working for major construction firms around the country with stops in Minnesota, where he met my wife of 46 years, Pennsylvania, St. Louis, Colorado, New York City, Detroit and finally, Florida. His career has spanned project and management responsibilities in almost 49 states and more than 40 foreign countries.

Erika Vardaro Director of Enrollment

Erika E. Vardaro, a Hanover, MA, native who attended Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, MA before moving on to, and graduating from, Bentley College, joined the Boston College High School family in late August as Director of Enrollment.

On welcoming her to the school, President Bill Kemeza commented that Erika’s new position will allow her to continue her commitment to “helping young people find the right school and navigate the complex school search process.”

Erika brings professional educational admissions credentials to Morrissey Boulevard, having worked in the undergraduate admission office at Bentley for more than twenty years, most notably as the director of undergraduate admission since 2006.

Just months into the BC High experience, she took time out on an autumn afternoon to talk about what she sees ahead for her and the school.

What is the role of the Director of Enrollment at BC High? What are some of the expectations or goals for this position?

The Director of Enrollment oversees the Admissions Office and all activities and procedures involved in the recruitment, admission and management of enrollment at BC High. We are committed to attracting the highest caliber of students. I have been asked to analyze everything we do on the admissions front so that our strategy and performance will not only be up to date, but also be forward-looking. This would include outreach programs, community engagement and the many ways of connecting with students and families in an era when technology, new media, and social media are playing such critical roles in our culture.

From your time spent in college admissions, how is a BC High graduate different from other students?

During my time at Bentley I read thousands of applications and there was always something that set BC High students apart from the others. It was clear that the BC High students were thoroughly prepared for college. The opportunities we have for students here mirror what you would find on a college campus, so when our students go off to college, they are more proactive in seeking the different types of opportunities and hit the ground running in pursuing their interests.

BC High students are also so accustomed to working hard in the classroom, handling rigorous studies, understanding how teachers can help them succeed and striving for their best that they are so well-prepared for the transition to college.

What programming and student life opportunities are offered to attract high quality applicants that will maintain BC High’s tradition of academic excellence?

ATHLETICS FOOTBALL RETURNS TO FENWAY PARK FOR THANKSGIVING SHOWDOWN High school football returned to Fenway Park for the first time in 80 years and BC High was part of the Thanksgiving showdown that started on November 25.

Prior to kickoff, Jerry York ’63 and his former BC High hockey teammate Trustee Paul Fulchino ’64 were chosen as honorary captains. York and Fulchino joined representatives from Catholic Memorial, the players and officials at midfield to participate in the coin-toss.

BC High did not disappoint fans with a 13-10 win over the Knights in America’s most beloved ballpark.

Congratulations to the seniors on the team for a win in their last game in a BC High uniform.

“We treated this like a Super Bowl,” said Head Coach Jon Bartlett ’87. “You’re playing at Fenway Park in front of a lot of people, and for our guys, 50 years from now they can come back and say they played football at Fenway and came out victorious.”

The strong leadership of Captains Steve Timmins ’16, Adam Tucker ’16 and Phil Lynch ’16 kept the Eagles in the back-and-forth play that showcased a strong defensive game. Both teams made very few mistakes.

The win allowed the Eagles to keep the beloved “Pumpkin Trophy,” which goes to the winner of the Thanksgiving Day game. The trophy had resided on Morrissey Boulevard for the past 10 years and Coach wasn’t ready for it to travel over to West Roxbury.

GOLF FINISHES SECOND IN STATE After finishing the season 11-4 overall and defending its South Sectional title, the varsity golf team finished state runner up in the Division 1 State Tournament on October 26 at the Haven Country Club in Boylston, MA. The team of four shot 312, falling five shots back of St. John’s Prep. Leading the team was freshman Nathan Ingram, whose stellar 3-over par 75 (in challenging conditions) earned him a tie for fourth overall in the state. The rest of the scores: senior captain Austin Coyne 78; senior captain Brendan Ridge 79; sophomore David Driscoll 80; senior captain Eddie Merrigan 83; and senior Dan Whelan 90. Rounding out the team for the season: senior Dan Yameen; junior Pete Lagrotteria; sophomores Nathan Robards and Clayton Piantedosi. The team fought hard throughout the year, and carried itself with sportsmanship and dignity.

BC HIGH INAUGURAL ALUMNI ROW On an unseasonably warm Thanksgiving morning, dozens of past BC High rowers convened at the Charles River for a well-contested and high-spirited Alumni Row, hopefully the first of many. With members of the classes of 2010-2015 in attendance—a range spanning current Division 1 collegiate first-boat rowers to alums who haven’t touched an oar since graduation—the Eagles took to the water for fun and bragging rights over a 1000-meter course.

3.1 mile/ 5K PR’s were impressive during Invitational running outside of Franklin Park with Colm Feeney ’16 (16:16) Joe Stover ’16 (16:16) Tim Duduch ’16 (16:42) Anthony Ioffredo ’16 (17:00) and David Nagle (17:02) leading the way for the Eagles.

CROSS COUNTRY HAS RECORD-SETTING SEASON The Cross-Country team ran to an undefeated dual meet season to win the Catholic Conference for the first time in years.

In a season of superlatives, highlights included winning the Large School Division of the Ocean State Invitational and the Catholic Conference regular season and Conference Meet. In the Conference Championship Meet BC High took eight of the top 15 places. In a remarkable back-and-forth over a 5K course at Franklin Park, Colm Feeney (16:34) was out-leaned at the line to finish 2nd in the varsity race. Junior Joe Stover ran a tough race between packs to finish third, and Tim Duduch held onto 5th for the Eagles. Sophomores David Nagle and Nick Fein along with Senior Anthony Ioffredo all finished in the top ten.

In the JV race, BC High took the first 14 places.

The Eagles concluded the season competing against a dozen other schools from the East Coast at the Jesuit Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in New York. The Eagles finished an impressive third, behind Connecticut All State runner-up Fairfield Prep and Gonzaga of Washington, D.C. The JV runners took five of the top six places to finish first.

Thanks to a combination of veteran savvy—and questionable start timing—the composite class of 2010-2011 blazed out from the rest of the field, but were reeled in by hard-charging boats from later years. With 500m to go, it was anyone’s race, as the 2013 and 2015 boats traded leads back and forth. The finish line judges recorded a virtual tie, though 2013 claimed they had “pipped” their rivals at the line: rowing-jargon for a finish decided by no more than a few inches of last-second surge. Much playful banter ensued, the class of 2010 claimed they would win next year “if we actually trained,” and several current BC High rowers chatted up their former teammates.

The coaches wish to thank all the rowers who attended, as well as the numerous parents and siblings who took time to cheer them on. Go Eagles!

Alumni News Notes Rev. Louis Grenier, SJ,’36, has completed 65 years of Priestly ministry in Jamaica, W.I. and is still semi-active there. On Jamaica’s Independence Day in August, he was awarded by the government of Jamaica its highest award the “OJ” or “Order of Jamaica.” The Citation read “For Distinguished Service to Religion, Education and Voluntary Service for over sixty years.”

After more than four decades of service to BC High, J. Barry Driscoll ’48 has retired from the Board of Trustees at BC High. He will now serve in a Trustee Emeritus role for the school.

For more than a decade, Bill McQueeney ‘52 has returned to Morrissey Boulevard to speak to the Models of Leadership class about Rural Water Ventures. The organization provides clean drinking water in many small communities in Nicaragua. The Models of Leadership class takes on various projects throughout the year from fundraising for clean drinking water to hosting the annual food drive during November.

Jim Jacobs ‘53 is a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Columbkille Partnership School in Brighton which he attended as a youngster before attending BC High & Northeastern.

He and his wife Mary Louise recently relocated to Norwood to be closer to their children, grandchildren and other family members.

Frank Previte ‘61 returned to BC High to have lunch with more than 20 members of the Senior Class Gift committee.

He led a discussion with the soon to be graduates about staying connected to one another and to BC High and he stressed the importance of giving back and helping other students that would follow them. Frank grew up in Arlington but now lives in the North End.

David Fay ‘56 was a grand marshal of the Westboro Memorial Day parade.

Fay was selected because of his patriotism and the history of his services in the town of Westboro.

Norm Clairmont ‘53 and his wife Kathleen are enjoying life in southern New Hampshire. They are especially proud of their son who is a professor at Notre Dame in Indiana – where he lives with his family.

Upon retiring from the faculty at Stonehill College, Richard Finnegan ‘60 has been honored with a professorship in his name at the Catholic liberal arts college in Easton. Earlier this summer, the College established the Distinguished Richard B. Finnegan Professorship in Political Science and International Relations. The professorship, which will allow a faculty member to conduct advanced research on major political themes, is a tribute to all that Finnegan accomplished as a teacher, scholar, author, administrator, ambassador and mentor for scores of students over almost five decades at Stonehill.

Jim Mackey ‘55 and his wife Dottie are enjoying retirement on Cape Cod. After living and working in the Washington DC area for many years they now call Massachusetts home.

The 40s Rev. Msgr. Francis O’Sullivan ‘40 now resides at the Jeanne Jugan residence in Somerville. A priest of the Arhcdiocese of Boston, Msgr. O’Sullivan is now retired and being cared for by the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Msgr. Frank Kelley ‘59 has decided that he is not ready for retirement quite yet. The lomg-time pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Roslindale will continue in that role going forward. Msgr. Kelley contiues to be a strong voice for social justice in Greater Boston.

Twenty members of the class of 1958 gathered in October at Freeport Tavern in Dorchester for their semi-annual lunch. Fond memories of Morrissey Boulevard, favorite teachers and somewhat “exaggerated” academic and athletic accomplishments are always shared at these get-togethers.

David Varnerin ‘63 recently attended a reception for Chicago area alumni in downton Chicago with other Eagles of all ages. He has been in the Windy City for many years now.

Harry Attridge ‘64 is enjoying a year of sabbatical at Yale Divinity School but is keeping busy with a number of academic projects. He and his wife, Wren, continue to reside in the New Haven area.

Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Arthur Colgan, C.S.C., ‘64 Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Chosica in Lima, Peru. This diocese is on the eastern side of Lima in the outskirts where the new bishop has worked for

many years and where he has more recently served as Vicar General of the Diocese. Bishop Colgan’s episcopal ordination was on December 12.

Frank Costantino ‘64, an awardwinning architectural illustrator for forty years, is also an accomplished watercolor painter. A member of many local, regional and national art associations, his distinctive watercolors are held in many private collections around the country. Frank enjoys an ongoing association with Boston’s Charles River Conservancy and The Esplanade Association, promoting their conservation programs.

In October, Bishop Peter Uglietto ’69 presided over the ordination to the diaconate of 20 Jesuits, including fellow alumnus Kevin Spinale. SJ ’96. For a Jesuit in formation this is the last step before priestly ordination to the Society of Jesus.

Retired Navy Chaplain and Rector of St. Mary’s Hall at Boston College Rev. Bob Keane, SJ ‘65 led the BC High community in prayer to honor Veterans Day. Fr. Keane thanked the students for not only inviting him, but for hosting such an important event. He remarked, “Most importantly, I want to thank you for this event, your prayers and awareness of our veterans. Of all things they have suffered, perhaps the worst is being forgotten. You are not doing that here at BC High and I thank you!”

BC High recognized the life of service and humility of Paul Logan ‘68 at this year’s Thanksgiving Mass. Paul has served as a religion teacher for 35 years at BC High. Prior to teaching at BC High, Paul taught religion at Pope John High School in Everett for seven years.

In his years at BC High, Paul has been generous of spirit and deed and has served as a role model to both students and faculty.

Thomas Lynch ‘68 was ordained a permanent deacon for the Diocese of Springfield, MA, on June 27. He is Director of Security for Baystate Health in Springfield, and lives with his wife, Linda in Belchertown, MA. They have 2 children and 3 grandchildren. Tom is assigned to the Newman Center at UMass, Amherst.

President Obama nominated General Joseph Dunford ‘73 to be the 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest ranking military officer in the United States Armed Forces.

The United States Senate confirmed General Dunford on October 1, 2015.

Rev. Joe White ‘78, a Dorchester native, was known to hit the streets to find those in need. After 10 years serving Southie, White will now be an administrator at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in the West End.

Ned Daly ‘69 released a short film production, Pastiche, Vol.1 No 1, at The North American Premiere Film Festival.

Pastiche will be shown as part of the International Shorts Program of The Arlington International Film Festival.

The 70s Rev. Bob Deehan ‘71 has recently assumed the role of Vicar Forane for a group of parishes in the south region of the Archdiocese of Boston, In addition to his duties as pastor of Holy Family Parish in Duxbury, Father Deehan will now help coordinate the efforts of parishes in Carver, Duxbury, Halifax, Hanson, Kingston, Lakeville, Marshfield, Middleborough, Pembroke and Plymouth on behalf of Cardinal Sean O’Malley and Regional Bishop John Dooher.

Richard Madden ‘71 recently relocated back to Massachusetts after many years living in Illlinois. Dick and his wife Jeanne now reside in Duxbury.

Jerry Pallotta ‘71 received the ‘Making a Difference’ Award for his advocacy and fundraising work on behalf of Elizabeth Seton Academy in Dorchester, the last all-girls Catholic School in Boston. Larry Mahoney ‘73, Senior Vice President, Logistics, has announced that he will be retiring from Walmart at the end of January, 2016. After many years of legendary service to the company and the Logistics Division, Larry is ready to move on to the next chapter in his life.

The BC High Investment Club took time out from following the stock market to wrap presents. The club, with their moderator, BC High Trustee Paul McManus, Jr. ’74, was one of the 32 groups in the high school to adopt a family this Christmas through My Brother’s Keeper.

Philip O’Connell, Jr., ‘75, a litigation partner in the Boston office of Dentons US LLP, has published his second book, The Sound of Silk, a historical novella set in San Francisco and the silver mines of the Sierras during the period 18751906. Like his first book, a collection of short stories entitled Manhattan Madonna And Other Stories, it is available on Amazon.

Robert Scannell, Jr. ’79, of Milton, president and CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester, was given the Cardinal Cushing Medal on October 4, 2015. He was being recognized for his commitment to service for humanity.

Amby Hayes ‘83, P’12 has won his own mirror ball trophy by beating out the competition at this year’s “Dancing with the Fontbonne Stars.” Amby spent months practicing his routine for his October 23 performance.

Harold Shaw ‘84 has been named Special Agent in Charge of FBI Boston Division. Shaw most recently served as the special agent in charge of counterintelligence of the New York Division.

Mr. Shaw entered the FBI in 1999 and worked as a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force serving as a case agent following the September 11, 2001 attacks, actively developing the investigation and pursuing leads tied to the attacks for the next two years.

Thomas Comeau ‘85 has been elected to the Corporation at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.

Members of the Corporation serve as key advisors to the institution and to its board of trustees.

Chris Hayes ‘85, P’17 of the religious education department participated in the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies’ Certificate program this past July. The program began with 10 days of experiential learning in Spain and Rome. Readings, discussions and lectures provided historical context for reflections on the leadership experiences of the earliest Jesuits. The program concluded at Boston College with four weeks of graduate-level coursework examining the dynamic of the Spiritual Exercises, the history of American Jesuits, and several contemporary leadership strategies through case studies, workshops and guest lectures.

Shocase launched a podcast series featuring thought leaders from across the world of marketing and Jim Norton ‘86 was featured on the “Creatively Speaking” podcast in December. All episodes are available in iTunes.

BC High Science teacher John Sullivan ‘86 was elected in November to the Weymouth School Committee, topping the ticket in his first foray into electoral politics.

Michael Flaherty ‘87 P’16 along with his son, Michael ‘16, organized guest speaker Mr. Stephan Ross, a survivor of the Holocaust and the driving force behind the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston. He spoke to the American and World War II history classes in the Bulger Performing Arts Center this past fall.

The 90s Christian Wise ‘90 won a seat on the Boxford Planning Board in this year’s election.

Mark Concannon ‘91 was appointed Global Vice President Pharmaceuticals, Home and Personal Care and Animal Health in addition to his Vice President Sales, Americas role for Dutch leading biochemical company Corbion. Mark lives in a suburb of Chicago with his wife and two children.

Colin Clark ‘07 is now working with Paramount Pictures after years spent at HBO in New York City. Colin also worked on the production of Boardwalk Empire.

Chris Hurley ‘07 still finds time to compete in basketball. The former Eagle helped BC High win a state championship in 2007 and went on to play at St. Michael’s College in Vermont. Chris now hosts a team that plays in the Watertown summer hoop league. The recreational league is filled with current and former college basketball players from all over the state.

Bohan Liu ‘08 was recently commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and started his first year of medical school at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD, a part of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Bohan is currently interested in internal medicine and emergency medicine.

Steven Richards ‘08 has received his Doctor of Pharmancy degree from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services. He has accepted a position with Novartis Biomedical Research in Cambridge.

Brandon Wahlberg ‘08 has made a number of appearances on the A & E television show with his uncles on “Wahlburgers.” What role is he playing, you ask? Himself!

Collin Rozanski ‘10 has been living in Japan teaching English as part of the Japan Exchange & Teaching Programme (JET) since July of 2014. During that time, he has traveled all over the country including Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. Before returning to the States, Collin along with his brother, Ross ‘14, decided to climb Mt Fuji, Japan’s tallest peak at 3,776 meters.

The adventure began on July 9, with the brothers making a stop at 3,300 meters so they could make the summit at sunrise the following morning.

Mount Fuji is one of Japan’s “Three Holy Mountains” along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku. To commemorate the importance of the climb, Collin decided to bring two of his prized possessions, a BC High flag and his Tom Brady jersey.

Joe Dowling ‘11 graduated from Fairfield University last spring and is now working at Fontbonne Academy, an all girls high school in Milton, teaching science.

Former wrestling captain Peter Barrett ‘05 remains undefeated and ranked in the top 10 as a pro fighter in the Northeast. Peter has an upcoming fight in Plymouth in January 2016, but has his sights set on the Ulitmate Fighting Championship.

Grant Heller ‘05 is the new Health and Wellness teacher in the Arrupe Division at BC High. For the past several years, Heller has been the varsity wrestling coach, and has also coached soccer and lacrosse at BC High.

Christopher Salerno ‘07, was promoted to U.S. Army captain while deployed in Afghanistan. He is with the 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division.

This is Salerno’s second deployment to Afghanistan, his first being in 2013. He was promoted to first lieutenant during his first deployment. While serving in Afghanistan in 2013, Salerno was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Exceptionally meritorious service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

His personal courage and commitment to mission accomplishment in a combat zone, under the most extreme circumstances, greatly contributed to the success of Operation Enduring Freedom

Ryan O’Leary ‘09 began working as a lobbyist in Washington, DC for NAGE/ SEIU, a government employees union based in Quincy, MA. Prior to working for NAGE, Ryan was a field organizer on Democratic political campaign in Northern Virginia. The caroling program has been run since the 1940’s and involves Brown professors reading scenes from the Nativity in Latin, Greek, and Sanskrit.

Alumni News Notes Gordon McLeod ‘12 served as 2015 captain for the Stonehill Skyhawks football team. He finished his senior season with a team-high 46 receptions for a team-best 556 yards and 5 touchdowns. McLeod earned a spot on the Northeast-10 Conferene All-Star team.

Former BC High football star Luke Catarius ‘13 was named Ivy League Honor Roll Player of the Week on November 10 for Princeton University.

While at BC High Luke was a Boston Herald Division I Player of the Year, he was named to the Boston Herald and Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic teams, he was selected to the ESPN Boston all-state team and the Catholic Conference all star.

Matt McDonough ‘13 and Sean Regan ‘13 are co-teaching a class at Boston College as part of the BC Splash program. The course is directed at current high school students and aims to connect undergraduate and graduate students with high school students in a fun and interactive way.

The title of their course is “Life Lessons from Spongebob Square Pants.”

Seamus Matlack ‘14 returned to campus to speak with students about applying to the United States Military Academies. Seamus is a sophomore at West Point.

Thomas Moynahan ‘14 was on hand during lunch before Thanksgiving break to speak to interested students about the Naval Academy. Tom is in his second year at the Academy and is eager to help BC High students learn more about the Academy.

Dan Dougherty ‘13 has spent the last three months living and studying abroad in London. Highlights of his experience have included trekking through London, seeing the Eiffel Tower in Paris, climbing the external staircase of the Church of Our Savior in Copenhagen, visiting Barcelona from Gaudi’s Parc Guell and climbing through coves in Ibiza. Being an ex-pat in London during the Thanksgiving break gave him the opportunity to meet up with fellow alum John Higgins ‘08 to share a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Lisa de Wykerslooth is teaching seventh and eighth grade French. After graduating from the University of Chicago and Middlebury College, Madame de Wykerslooth taught in Quincy for four years. She returns to the Boston area after teaching in Arlon, Belgium for the past four years.

Tracy Domitrz is the eighth grade Guidance Counselor. Ms. Domitrz has her master’s degree from Boston College and impressed all of us at BC High last year when she served as a guidance intern.

Matthew Joyce ’01 is teaching high school Physics and coaching the 7th grade soccer team. Matt has a degree in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University and previously taught Physics, Chemistry and Forensic Science at Norfolk County Agricultural High School.

Tom Larsson ’10 returned to BC High and is currently teaching in the Social Studies Department. A faculty member since January 2015, Tom has taught freshman, sophomore and junior history classes.

Katie McKiernan is teaching eighth grade math. Ms. McKiernan has both an undergraduate and a master’s degree from Notre Dame.

She has taught in both New Orleans and in Boston.

Rachel Reilly is teaching seventh and eighth grade Spanish. Ms. Reilly a degree in Spanish Language and Literature from Saint Anselm College.

She has taught at both Londonderry Middle School and Central Catholic High School.

A special celebration was held at St. Ignatius Church in Chestnut Hill, this past September to recognize the lives and achievements of members of the Society of Jesus. Modern Language teacher Patricia O’Neill P’12 and Chris Hayes ’85, P’17 of the Religious Education Department participated in the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies’ Certificate program this past July. The program began with 10 days of experiential learning in Spain and Rome. Readings, discussions, and lectures provided historical context for reflections on the leadership experiences of the earliest Jesuits. The program concluded at Boston College with four weeks of graduate-level coursework examining the dynamic of the Spiritual Exercises, the history of American Jesuits, and several contemporary leadership strategies through case studies, workshops, and guest lectures.

IN REMEMBRANCE: John R. “Jack” Burns ’52 John R. “Jack” Burns from the class of 1952 passed to eternal life on October 4, 2015. Jack was the beloved husband of Ann (Whoriskey), loving father of Denise of Kennebunk, ME, Brian ’79 and his wife Susan of Milton, Claire and husband Joseph of Arlington, and the late Brenda Tocci. Loving grandfather of Ryan and Cord Tocci, Kayla, Erika, and John Roberts, Taylor, Shae, and Christopher Burns. Brother of the late Paul Burns, Fay Galgay, and Virginia Shaughnessy.

In the fall of 1948, Jack would commute from his home in Cambridge, MA to the South End of Boston as he joined the great class of 1952 as a freshman. After graduation, Jack received a Bachelor of Science from Boston College and Master of Education degree from the State College of Boston.

Jack received many awards and served the community in various capacities including Principal in the Watertown and Arlington public schools.

A lifelong educator, Jack was also a lecturer at Leslie College and Boston College.

The BC High alumni community lost a great friend in Jack, he was a driving force behind the class of 1952 getting together twice a year for more than 20 years at Amrheins restaurant in South Boston. “Jack would stand at the door and greet everyone by name and run a tight ship when it came to addressing the crowd, you had five minutes, and that was it.”

Jack Leonard ’52 recalls fondly of his friend. “Jack was always a champion for the underdog, whether it was in education or raising money for the Bishop Francis X. Irwin Class of 1952, Scholarship Fund at BC High, Jack would make sure the collection basket didn’t skip you.”

In Jack’s honor, BC High will be renaming the fund to the Bishop Francis X. Irwin and Jack Burns Class of 1952, Scholarship Fund.

THE CORE OF WONDER IS TO FIND GOD

Most of you know that the Jesuits have certain founding principles of spirituality that guide their education and all of us who are part of that ministry.

Perhaps the most important is their belief that you can find God in all things. Finding God in all things, in everyone, in every place, in every action. What does this mean?

It does not mean seeing God – as an old man like a ghost – hidden or partly hidden in things.

God playing hide and seek. It means experiencing God. How? It means experiencing the generative expansive core of wonder, hope, joy, delight, compassion, connection – everywhere, with all, in all …that is finding God. I think many of us had tastes of this experience when we were young. Perhaps in seeing our first deep snow there was a sense of wonder about what other surprises the world may have in store. Perhaps it was in school the first time we made connections…in the harmony of mathematics or the Greek root of one of our English words and then wanting to know more.

The desire to see more, to experience more, of course is captured in a word that everyone influenced by Jesuit spirituality has come to know: Magis, from the Latin, and it means just that – more.

So, believing that this expansive experience – this core of wonder is to find God – this has a remarkable effect on our approach to the world. It encourages you to intensely engage, to never lose your curiosity, your creativity, your delight in discovery, your confidence, your connection, your compassion for all that exists.

So, good Pope Francis, our beloved Jesuit companion, assumes that we are “seeing” the world, the earth, all creation for what it is – the place to find God – a sacramental expression of mystery and wonder, hope, joy, mercy, compassion and connection.

St. Ignatius, in his reminiscences, told of his own experience of finding God in the world, this natural world. He related the story to Luis Goncalves Da Camara, his companion. It is frequently cited: One day he went to the Church of St. Paul, situated about a mile from Manresa. Near the road is a stream, on the bank of which he sat, and gazed at the deep waters flowing by. While seated there, the eyes of his soul were opened. He did not have any special vision, but his mind was enlightened on many subjects, spiritual and intellectual. So clear was this knowledge that from that day everything appeared to him in a new light. Such was the abundance of this light in his mind that all the divine helps received, and all the knowledge acquired up to his sixty-second year, were not equal to it.

The world, this earth, is as holy as an altar, as honored as a sanctuary, a sacred place where God dwells.
