Robert F Walsh ’59 has been involved in real estate and government affairs for more than forty years. Initially, with the Boston Redevelopment Authority where he was Director in the late seventies. In 1980 he created the RFWALSH Company a multi faceted project and construction management firm, which was involved with large projects for clients including Boston University, Boston College, Beacon Capital Partners, Beth Israel Hospital and the expansion of numerous community health centers and social service agencies.

BOSTON COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN A PART OF MY FAMILY SINCE 1948 when my oldest brother Jack ’52 began his freshman year, Jim ’54 followed Jack, I was in the class of 1959 and Don ’64. The next generation included Jim’s sons Michael ’82 and Stephen ’92 and even further down the family tree with my grandson, David Colleti ’13 and Don’s grandson Andrew ’22 who will begin in the Arrupe Division this fall. I know my parents sent us to BC High because the Jesuit order of Catholic priests and brothers embraced the belief that true education should develop not only the intellect, but also moral and spiritual character.

During high school, I made many friends that have lasted a lifetime, one in particular Monsignor Frank Kelley ’59 or “Uncle Frank” as he is called in our family. There was a time when Frank and I competed for the same position on the baseball team, now we collaborate at the Pine Street Inn together and have done so for the last 40 years.

The highlights of my time spent as a Trustee include the BC High sponsored International Colloquium of Jesuit Secondary schools, our Sesquicentennial Celebration at Boston Symphony Hall and the construction of both Cadigan Hall and Monan Park as part of the 150th Anniversary Campaign. I have also come to appreciate and deeply respect the collaborative efforts of the talented faculty and staff that I have served with on many of the various committees.

As I reflect on my tenure as a Trustee and Chairman of the Board, it would be easy and perhaps accurate to say BC High has never been stronger and better positioned for future generations. We are a community of generous alumni, committed parents, dedicated faculty and staff. We have a robust endowment, and a campus that we can be proud of but most importantly students who are competent, conscientious and compassionate. This is a community that reflects the Magis spirit of Ignatius.

Bob has been involved in many local organizations, including Pine Street Inn, Trust for City Hall Plaza, Norman Levanthal Map Center, Walsh Commission and New Market Business Association.

It is appropriate to celebrate our successes, but there is still much work to be done and challenges ahead as we sustain our Jesuit, Catholic mission of preparing young men for college and subsequent leadership in the community. The foundation of the work we do at BC High becomes more difficult as competition for students in our region rises while the applicant pool decreases. Our mission of providing a quality education to aspiring students from diverse backgrounds that reflect the diversity of our church and community has never been more important. The future of education requires us to adapt to changing demographics and methods of teaching and learning, making who we teach just as important as what we teach.

In 2013, Bob received the Paul J. Hunter ’53 “Man for Others” Award for his commitment and dedication to BC High.

Lastly, I have had the good fortune of developing a close relationship with President Bill Kemeza during my time as Trustee. As the first lay President of BC High Bill’s leadership has been unparalleled, and his commitment to the school for the past 12 years has allowed BC High to thrive in a competitive market.

Bob has been a long-time supporter of BC High serving as Trustee Associate and Trustee, and the last two years as Chair of the Board.

It has been my honor to serve our school while seeking to do all things ad majorem Dei gloriam, for the greater glory of God.

Don’t Let Distractions Take Over Colonel Richard McKeon of the Massachusetts State Police tried texting and driving in the Distractology simulator. It didn’t end well. “Driving distracted is dangerous and deadly. The simulator is great at showing how dangerous it can be,” remarked Colonel McKeon after his turn driving.

On Wednesday, March 9, Boston College High School along with Driscoll Insurance Agency and Arbella Insurance Foundation invited members of the Massachusetts State Police to try out the new simulator. The Arbella Insurance Foundation sponsors the free Distractology driving simulator so that new drivers can learn to anticipate distractions created by smart phones, streaming music, and food and drink, in both residential and highway conditions.

The idea to host the simulator came from Arbella CEO John Donahue P’11 with help from members of the BC High Fathers’ Group. Joe Perez P’15 had heard of a program developed in his local police department on driving under the influence. At the same time, the media reported on DUI offenses but noted more accidents were being caused by cell phone usage. Joe said, “That’s my kid,

Hyde Center Welcomes Special Global Visitors

This year, the Hyde Center for Global Education was blessed to receive visiting students and teachers from different Jesuit schools around the world. Groups visited and studied at BC High from Jesuit partner schools in Argentina, France, Ireland, and Zimbabwe. A recent visit from St. George’s College in Harare, Zimbabwe was particularly special as BC High welcomed back for the second time the group’s teacher, Arthur Garande. “It was incredible to be back at BC High for the second time. What felt so foreign and unfamiliar during my first visit shifted beautifully this year to a feeling of belonging, friendship and family. We are blessed in the Jesuit network to create meaningful relationships for students through these partnerships, but as adults we are not immune to the incredible impact these experiences have on us forever…and I saw snow fall for the very first time in my life!”

The Hyde Center was incredibly grateful to have welcomed so many wonderful people from the Jesuit network throughout the year – our community was enriched and strengthened by their presence. Next year, the center looks forward to partnerships in Argentina, China, Tanzania, Italy, Zimbabwe, China, Ireland, France, Belize, India, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Australia.

city councilor awards citation

Arrupe Student Honored on One Boston Day One Boston Day is an opportunity to celebrate the resiliency,

generosity, and strength demonstrated by the people of Boston and those around the world in response to the tragedy of April 15, 2013. As part of One Boston Day, City Councilor At-Large Annissa Essaibi-George visited Ms. Maffeo’s English class to surprise Jack Studley ’21 with an official citation of resolution.

Essaibi-George read to the seventh graders, “The City Council wanted to extend its gratitude and appreciation to Jack for his work in creating a street hockey league near Garvey Park. Jack saw a need in his Dorchester community for young kids to get out and play through an organized league and he was recognized today for his efforts to better his community.”

Jack’s family was in on the surprise and with the help of Ms. Maffeo and Vice Principal Bob Hamblet, who shared in the celebration of the award. Jack was the only student to receive a citation of appreciation from the Councilor.

Pedaling for Power On April 28, the AP Physics students displayed their talents

and creativity by presenting their senior projects to the rest of the BC High community. The enthusiastic response from their peers and BC High faculty and staff was the perfect way to celebrate the hard work that went into the projects. These budding scientists had worked in small groups since January and experienced the many difficulties, failures and successes associated with real science. Students explored topics of their choosing, and projects ranged from mechanical engineering with the construction of a trebuchet, a ballistic pendulum, and even a homemade vacuum chamber. Other groups were interested in electrical engineering and built working radios, music speakers, a small-scale rail gun, and a bicycle generator. dePaul Miller ’16 and Jake Thornton ’16 wanted to generate enough power with a modified bicycle to charge an iPhone or iPad. Although the “Power through Pedaling” project did not generate enough voltage with their first build-out, Miller and

Thornton learned a lot about circuitry and currents and what was needed to generate electricity and our devices.

The exposition was a great way to end the year for the AP Physics students and the community.

“Being a man for others is not abstract, or an overly high standard that only a few extraordinary individuals can obtain,” General Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. ’73 told the 305 graduates at the One Hundred and Fifty Second Commencement Exercises of Boston College High School. “It’s something that can be achieved in many ways.”

After serving for almost four decades as a Marine and rising to the country’s highest ranking military officer, the General has learned what it means to serve. He urged the BC High class of 2016 to find its own meaning of service as he remembered the Jesuits that taught him in his days at BC High. The General’s address also thanked fellow alumni that have inspired him in his life of service, Medal of Honor recipient Captain Tom Kelley ’56 and Lt. Brian McPhillips ’96, who gave his life in the Battle of Baghdad in 2003 under the General’s command in Iraq.

Ten members of the class of 2016 have decided to further their education and career in the military. It was a special moment for them to meet the General and a recipient of the Medal of Honor before graduation.

St. Ignatius of Loyola believed one’s life purpose should be of love and service to others.

To that end, Ignatius said, “Go forth -- and set the world on fire.” And this year’s Saint Ignatius Award recipients have done just that.

The St. Ignatius Award is the highest honor bestowed on a graduate of Boston College High School, acknowledging those who have exemplified the ideals of our school through high moral character and selfless service to the community. The Thomas and Mary Shields Medal is presented to an individual who is not a graduate of BC High but is recognized for his or her service, dedication, and generosity to the school. This year’s Ignatian Awards were presented to John B. “Jack” Dunn ’79, P’16, Reverend William P. “Bill” Joy ’64 and John F. “Jack” Leonard ’52. The Shields Medal was presented to Deborah P. Reed P’04.

JACK DUNN ’79, P’16 has spent his entire career in the service of others, with a lifelong commitment to supporting Jesuit education and the Church’s outreach to the poor. After graduating with honors from Boston College, he returned to his Alma Mater, BC High, as a teacher and coach. He later moved out of the classroom to head up the school’s Advancement Office. Jack’s talents were soon recognized beyond the confines of BC High, and it was not long before he was named Vice President for External Affairs at Catholic Charities of Boston, the largest non-profit human services agency in Massachusetts. Since 1998, Jack has served as Director of News & Public Affairs and University Spokesman at Boston College. In addition to his professional life, Jack found time to be a “Big Brother” to a young boy without a father and to serve three terms on BC High’s Board of Trustees. Jack is a dedicated son, husband and father, and his warmth and sense of humor are a constant gift to his friends, colleagues, and students. In his career and in his personal life, Jack has exhibited steadfast commitment to the values of community, compassion, integrity, and service. JACK LEONARD, a member of the storied class of 1952, is a model of the Ignatian ideals of finding God in all people and things and of being a person for others. He is truly a giver who cares not whether he receives anything in return. With boundless energy, a constant smile and a good word for all, Jack’s attention is always on others and not on himself. For more than 25 years his commitment to Lasell College as a Board Member has helped many aspiring college students achieve their goal of higher education. Jack’s work at Lasell reaches beyond the board room to the senior housing village, where Jack is an active member of this life-long learning community. He has also served as a member of the Board of First Night Boston and City Year, mentoring young members of the organization. Jack, along with fellow classmates, helped to initiate and perpetuate the Class of 1952 Scholarship, which has awarded more than $64,000 in financial aid to deserving BC High students.

FATHER BILL JOY entered St. John’s Seminary after graduating from BC High and was ordained to the priesthood in 1972. Further studies took him to the University of Notre Dame, Babson College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Over the years of his priestly life, Father has served in several parish assignments, Campus Ministry at the Harvard/Radcliffe Catholic Center, and, for seven years, as Director of Church Affairs for Catholic Relief Services in New York and Maryland. In April of 2015, Father Joy was named a member of Cardinal Sean O’Malley’s Cabinet as Special Assistant to the Vicar General. Embracing Pope Francis’s call for the Catholic Church to use the internet and social media to help spread the Gospel, Father shares his spirituality with others through the use of technology. For nearly 45 years, Father Joy’s life of faith and service to the community has indeed been a living example of service to the greater glory of God. DEB REED, a nearly two-decade member of the BC High Board of Trustees, has been a long-time trusted advisor to BC High administrators and faculty. As a consultant in North and Central America, she counsels schools in a broad range of educational topics. Key to Deb’s success is her keen understanding of how hard teachers work, and she is often a sounding board who encourages teachers to think boldly about new initiatives that will infuse energy into the classroom. Beginning in 2003, Deb was instrumental in developing the internal study to determine if a middle school addition would be a successful venture for BC High. Her work as part of the Board’s Enrollment Committee and its thoughtful research forecasted just how successful the addition of Arrupe has been. As an active member of Holy Family Parish of Concord, MA, Deb enjoys teaching faith formation and working with parish youth. She also donates her time to the Research for Better Teaching organization of Acton and DPR Educational Consulting of Concord. WHEN GENERAL ELECTRIC ANNOUNCED IN JANUARY that it planned to move its world headquarters to Boston, it was a kind of coming out party for the city – a reflection of its transformation over the decades from gritty postindustrial backwater to 21st century innovation hub.

At the center of the GE deal and the most recent phase of the city’s transformation are three Boston College High School alumni working at the highest levels of city government, determined to bring the industrial giant to Boston and to show the world that Boston is open for business.

“GE coming to Boston signals the city as an important place for a global corporate headquarters to do business,” said John Barros ’92, Boston’s Chief of Economic Development, a cabinet-level position in Mayor Walsh’s administration responsible for a broad portfolio ranging from consumer affairs and tourism to business and jobs development. “It signals Boston is a hub for innovation and is a leader in cutting edge technology.”

POWERED BY BC HIGH ALUMNI community, formed a kind of BC High triumvirate in persuading the Fortune Five firm to relocate to the Hub, each of them bringing their own experience and expertise to the table. BC High Today spoke with each of them, and they confirmed what so many BC High alumni already know: that a BC High connection is much deeper than an alumni network or an every-five-years reunion; it is a shared sense of values and a commitment to service.

Barros: From Dudley Square to The Innovation District Barros, who grew up in Roxbury, made his name in community development circles as head of the Dudley Square Neighborhood Initiative and as a member of the Boston School Committee.

The Dartmouth-educated Barros also had a stint working in finance, giving him a professional well-roundedness that’s exceptional, if not unique.

Barros was tapped to head the city’s economic development efforts by his one-time mayoral rival after Walsh’s election almost two years ago. Since then, Barros has worked not only on the nuts and bolts of economic development, but also taking on the bigger picture task of selling Boston internationally.

“The work that we’ve been doing since Mayor Walsh took office has centered on rebranding our city. The mayor asked me to put a team together that would market the city to companies around the United States and worldwide,” said Barros. “It was clear that Boston [is a leader] in terms of startups and cutting edge companies…the brain power we have around here, 250,000 college students, that quickly became an asset. Boston ranks in the top three in most of the major categories of venture capital investment, and Massachusetts shows up very well in Bloomberg’s list of most innovative states…So for us, after a year and a half of honing in on that message and talking to people about it, we were glad to see that it had gained some traction.”

Barros and others in the Walsh Administration had been hearing whispers about GE’s desire to move its headquarters from Connecticut. Coincidentally, when Barros picked up the phone to call the company, one of his first contacts was fellow BC High alumnus James McGaugh ’88, who works as GE’s executive manager of government affairs and policy.

It was an early connection, but their common BC High experience mattered, remembered Barros.

“There was a BC High connection that allowed us to strike a rapport immediately, from the people we

POWERED BY BC HIGH ALUMNI know to mutual friends and networks, and it allowed us to establish trust.”

That relationship soon came to complement existing ones with city government colleagues and BC High alumni David Sweeney and Rory Cuddyer. With Barros serving as GE’s main contact at City Hall, he worked with Sweeney on tax incentives and with Cuddyer to marshal the city’s large startup community.

“Dave and I worked very closely on this one,” Barros recalled. “As we were working to put together the package for GE, one of the incentives in conversation was property tax incentives. Dave as our CFO understands all of those incentives very well – what we could do and could not not do.”

“Rory is in the economic development department [working as] liaison between the startup community and the mayor,” Barros explained. “He works on creating the kind of ecosystem that brought GE to Boston. The package is more than just the tax incentives. In fact, we knew we needed to sell the Boston ecosystem as an innovative place to do business.”

Cuddyer: Startup City Growing up in South Boston, local politics was always a big part of Rory Cuddyer’s life. After graduating from Boston College, where he studied English and philosophy, Cuddyer volunteered for Ed Markey’s 2013 Senate campaign before landing a job with Mayor Walsh’s campaign later that year.

During the transition he worked as a research assistant on the economic development team, where he first worked with Barros, then as an aid to Walsh’s chief of staff.

“The mayor’s liaison to the startup community was a new position. It came about after the mayor had a roundtable with startup companies, founders, and venture capital firms, and it became clear that these startups had to interact with the city on a variety of issues, but they didn’t know who to go to,” Cuddyer said. “It’s also about having the city be a little more active and engaging with these early stage companies. In 10 years, they are going to be creating hundreds of jobs, and we want to be sure we’re doing everything we can to stay in touch and establish a solid relationship.”

If GE was drawn by Boston’s climate of innovation, then startups are like that climate’s oxygen.

Some are big successes, some big failures, and some fall in between, but they all require talent and resources as they find the next big idea.

For Boston to attract GE, Barros and Cuddyer knew that the company could be drawn to that startup vibe – and to the talent and energy that they create.

“Part of our selling point for GE is that Boston has all this amazing talent here,” Cuddyer said. “We have an incredible startup community in Boston, early stage companies in life sciences, technology, and software. It makes perfect sense for GE to come to Boston to tap into those resources, not to mention our 38 colleges and universities and the huge pool of talented graduates.”

POWERED BY BC HIGH ALUMNI With GE positioning itself less like a 125-year-old industrial firm and more like a young, lean startup, Cuddyer’s job was to sell GE on Boston in the same way he would a small software company.

“A lot of what I would do is making sure that the facts that we were giving during our proposal really reflect our strengths,” he recalled. “For example, 35% of Boston’s population is between ages 20 and 34. That’s the highest of any major American city. And making sure they were aware of the resources available, from Mass Challenge, the world’s largest startup accelerator, to the universities and companies…and generally selling the vibrancy of the city.”

Sweeney: Dollars and Cents Like Cuddyer, David Sweeney had long envisioned a life in politics or public service. After graduating from Providence College with a degree in political science, Sweeney, with the help of then-State Representative Marty Walsh, was hired as a budget analyst on the House Ways and Means Committee. Two years later, Sweeney was appointed budget director to the committee, and finally, when Ways and Means Chair Robert DeLeo was elected Speaker, Sweeney became Chief Fiscal Policy Advisor to the Speaker. After a two year stint as CFO to the Massachusetts State Lottery, Sweeney was recruited to become the city’s chief financial officer in 2014.

As the person responsible for the city’s purse strings, Sweeney was a critical piece of the puzzle in bringing GE to Boston, but unlike Barros and Cuddyer, he worked mainly in the background.

“I first started hearing whispers in my day to day that GE was starting to look around, that they’re displeased with what’s going on in Connecticut. There was a lull of several months before I heard anything about GE again, but then we reengaged, came up with a plan driven primarily by John [Barros’s] cabinet,” Sweeney recalled. “Then those talks kind of went on between Governor Baker and the Walsh administration until such time as it came that we were one of the top two or three cities. We heard rumors about North Carolina, New York, and Providence, but it was clear they were very interested in Boston. We were able to offer something that none of those other places could – a forward-thinking, innovative, collaborative city where people want to move to.”

“Other cities’ pitches were more focused on financial packages. We heard rumors of $300 million packages offered,” said Sweeney. “There’s some disagreement publicly about the use of incentives, but these are largely incentives that were already available in the normal course of business that we were able to utilize.

“None of us went to school together,” said Sweeney, “so I think just from a relationship building standpoint to have that connection is extremely helpful…As a common thread in all of us, I think the drive to serve was largely spurred by experiences at BC High.”

What’s more, Sweeney sees GE’s impending move as one that will have benefits for the city beyond taxes collected or buildings constructed.

“We’re very happy GE is making commitments to charitable giving in Boston, that they are intent on integrating into the community, being involved with the business community. In a lot of ways we see it as the cherry on the top of the first phase of the build out of the Seaport District,” he said. “It is also sparking international interest in Boston. We’re getting bombarded with companies looking to move their headquarters here.”

The Power of Networks, the Power of Values General Electric’s planned move to Boston is the result of months of hard work of hundreds of people in city and state government. But it is difficult to look at the role that John Barros, Rory Cuddyer, and David Sweeney played and not see the imprint of a BC High education and values on the city.

All three note that the connection among them was not one of the shared memories of classmates but rather a shared sense of what it means to serve others.

It impacted my classmates, me, and the alumni community because so many of us are in public service.”

Letter from the Chairs

As the 150th Anniversary Campaign draws to a close, we find ourselves cautiously optimistic

that we will surpass the $75 million goal set in October 2013. This Campaign has had many peaks and valleys and we are confident that we will complete our goal on a high note. When we celebrate the success of this Campaign on October 29, 2016, we will be recognizing the hard work, dedication, and commitment of a community brought together for one mission – that is, to provide a Jesuit, Catholic education for all young men, regardless of need.

The Campaign had three main initiatives: to increase the endowment and grow scholarship and student programming; to improve facilities to address the demands of a diverse and active student body; and to continue to increase the Fund for BC High to keep pace with the first two initiatives. Additionally, we had many other goals we hoped to achieve. We have seen nearly 300 donors to the Campaign thus far, with 210 being “new” donors that haven’t supported a BC High campaign previously. Many of these new donors are young alumni and parents. They have joined the Companions’ Circle and have committed to the Fund for BC High and are providing consistent, sustainable growth for the next several years. Lastly, we have seen our St. Ignatius of Loyola Society grow by 43 donors, helping us surpass the $20 million mark in planned gifts – a remarkable feat that is the result of years of growing and fostering relationships with loyal and dedicated alumni.

We hope many of you will join us on October 29 as we celebrate the success of the 150th Anniversary Campaign. We are humbled by the generosity of so many alumni, parents and friends.

Like you, we know BC High is in a secure position to continue educating young men for the next 150 years.

H

aving grown up in Milton, MA, as the oldest of five children, Phil Byrne was perfectly happy to continue his education at the public high school. His parents, however, had a different plan.

Looking back, Phil feels Boston College High School provided him more structure, more discipline, and was more of a challenge than he would have had otherwise – and for that he is grateful. He was pushed to develop a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility that he has carried with him throughout his life. After leaving BC High he graduated from College of the Holy Cross and then served as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

He went on to receive an MBA from Harvard Business School and led a very successful career in investments and business. His academic achievements aside, Phil’s strong work ethic also brought him success in the track and field, winning the national and world masters division decathlon title in 2001.

His sense of responsibility and volunteerism is unparalleled. A look at the list of civic and community organizations that he has been a part of is impressive, to say the least. From Palm Beach, FL, to Boston, MA, Phil has served, chaired, directed, and been a member of countless organizations which rely on his leadership and dedication. Counted among those groups is BC High, where he has served as a Trustee for the past six years.

It is his commitment to his country, however, which led to one of the most special gifts BC High has ever received. In 2009 he helped establish the Veterans Wall of Honor – a collaborative project with faculty and students that outlines the history of BC High and the wars and battles of the US military. Listed alongside the Veterans Wall are the names of the BC High alumni that died in the line of duty, while memorabilia from alumni veterans adorns another portion of it. The wall serves as a reminder to all who view it of the sacrifices that so many BC High graduates made for freedom.

Intended to be an educational piece as well as a memorial, the monument traces American military involvement from the school’s founding in 1863 to the present day.

Whether it is his ties to the military, as a civic leader, or in the business world, Phil wants to ensure the strong work ethic that was instilled and nurtured in him while at BC High will continue for generations to come. He believes, “BC High is an experience, rather than just an education…the very extensive range of courses and co-curricular activities, significantly expanded and upgraded physical plant, talented and dedicated faculty and staff, opportunities for foreign travel and community service, and the large and growing endowment that it enjoys now have given it a significant place in secondary education both in the Boston area and among Jesuit high schools around the world.” Supporting BC High and the 150th Anniversary Campaign with an estate gift is just one more commitment Phil chose to make. For this, BC High is eternally grateful.

you’ve been involved with Boston College High School in any capacity over the past 30 years, you’ve likely heard the name, Joe Donahue. Few men have a passion and commitment for their school than he.

Joe Donahue was born and proudly raised in Waltham, MA. The son of working-class parents, he was encouraged to attend BC High by his older brother Peter, who attended Xavier, a high school run by Jesuits in Concord, MA. The Jesuits continued to play a role in Joe’s life as he went on to attend Boston College after graduating in 1974. “High school, to me, is the most important time to set a person on a straight course in life. My parents believed in God, each other, and the Jesuits to get this done…all my successes in life can be traced back to what I learned at BC High.”

Success and achievement have come frequently to Joe. He applies the same principles he learned on Morrissey Boulevard to the mission and philosophy of the company he started more than 30 years ago in his mother’s basement. Microtech Staffing Group has become the premier technical staffing firm on the Eastern seaboard. With offices from Massachusetts to Florida, Microtech is widely recognized as an industry leader, placing 2,000 highly-skilled employees on a daily basis. Being a Jesuit educated business leader, Joe is constantly searching for more – the Magis. He knows success can be fleeting, which is why he takes a handson approach to the growth of his company. He has the vision and courage to be prepared for the best and the worst the markets have to offer.

Joe applies his business mindset to his passion for BC High. He has seen BC High through remarkable changes, difficult times, and shared in countless successes. He has championed the Class Agent program, whereby each class has a leader to help rally classmates to reach annual fundraising goals. This program has grown exponentially in the last fifteen years and continues to challenge the school, and fellow alumni, to raise more for the Fund for BC High each year. As Vice Chair and Chair of the Board of Trustees, he saw the school through the financial crisis of 2008-2010. His “can-do” approach, helped ease anxiety and fear during a tenuous time.

In 2012, Joe was honored for his loyalty and generosity to BC High with the St. Ignatius Award, the highest honor bestowed upon its graduates. His ability to lead a boardroom is only matched by his ability to “hold court” among a group of students. He has spent countless hours mentoring and fostering the philanthropic spirit among students each year. He has often challenged the senior class to set goals for participation for their Senior Class Gift and then matched it, once achieved, with a financial gift of his own. His encouragement and pep talks truly resonate with the students and he is remembered by young alumni each year.

As Co-Chair of the 150th Anniversary Campaign, Joe’s understanding of the inner workings of BC High has made his most recent commitment incredibly important. In an increasingly competitive enrollment and admissions climate, Joe has helped ease the pressures by offering merit scholarships to those most deserving students. Donahue Scholars are proud to be identified as high-achieving, hard-working students that will positively influence the entire student body at BC High. He knows that by offering students an opportunity to attend BC High with a bit of financial help, he can make the difference between enrolling a student and that student choosing another school. His results speak for themselves. In two years, Joe has seen a yield of approximately 60% of those to whom he has offered the award. This strategy has been duplicated by several other donors to help ease the burden of financial aid at BC High.

As many do, Joe feels education is the great equalizer in our society. And Joe would argue that a BC High education gives a student an advantage that is unmatched. Through Jesuit ideals, values, and mission, BC High is a place for young men to thrive. “You are allowed to grow, to become a young man that learns to take advantage of the many gifts you are given from God. If you want to better yourself, a Jesuit education is the way to do it,” he said. To Joe, providing the financial means to make this available to all students is a form of justice – he is leveling the playing field for all deserving, qualified young men and giving them the opportunity of a lifetime.

To know Joe Donahue is to know BC High. He exemplifies what it means to be a “man for others.” He is of the mindset that BC High is “our school,” and it is the responsibility of all alumni to uphold the Jesuit, Catholic ideals set forth more than 150 years ago.

F

or Antje and Kevin Walsh P’18, like so many others, education is a top priority and a frequent topic of discussion in their home with their two sons. Kevin’s parents were raised and educated in Ireland. Neither attended college, but through a tremendous work ethic they provided everything they possibly could for him and his brother, including the opportunity for private education. Though he turned down their offer, he now realizes that he missed a great opportunity. “I was a typical kid and was more concerned about being with friends rather than thinking about the big picture and how such an experience could impact the rest of my life,” he said. “Foolishly, I didn’t value my parent’s advice.

I know they didn’t experience it themselves and thought they were overestimating the benefits.”

For Antje, on the other hand, growing up in East Germany, the educational system was very different. Antje was a teacher in Germany and has a great appreciation for education. “I want my children to have access to great teachers and be with other students who are focused on their education and see the opportunity at hand,” she said.

Antje and Kevin firmly believe that attending a private school will not guarantee success; it takes hard work and grit to be successful. “If our children take full advantage of the entire experience including stretching themselves with AP classes, developing their network, playing sports, valuing diversity, and growing personally with strong values and ethics, they will be very happy with their journey.” The Walsh’s feel that BC High offers students a competitive edge when they graduate. They are well prepared academically with a rigorous curriculum and well-adjusted socially with experiences that go beyond the classroom. The network of alumni that engages in supporting the school and fellow alumni helps with this “infrastructure and competitiveness.”

The decision to join the 150th Anniversary Campaign as members of the Companions’ Circle was a relatively easy one for Antje and Kevin. They feel strongly that the education their son receives is well worth the cost of tuition. Both see their son growing and maturing and Kevin is proud that their son embraced the idea of a private education; “He is smarter and more mature than I was at his age” Kevin remarks. They are confident that BC High is strengthening their son’s values and is consistent with the lessons they instill at home. They are pleased that Jesuit ideals are enforced in and out of the classroom; that is, to be men for others, caring and compassionate, and committed to service and justice.

Antje, Kevin and their children believe that the small sacrifice that they make as a family to support BC High is the right thing to do. “It is a great feeling to be able to participate with other parents, alumni, and friends of BC High to provide an opportunity for students that would otherwise not have the chance to contribute to the wonderful experience that makes BC High so special” echoes Antje.

John Lydon ’03 first thought of attending BC High after hearing the stories of his two uncles who attended

the school. A BC High diploma was treasured in his family of first and second generation Roman Catholic Irish immigrants, and John felt inspired to find his way to Morrissey Boulevard, too. “I grew up hearing that only the most intelligent and hardworking were able to go,” John said. “Those who were given the privilege of doing so were blessed with a great opportunity.”

Like most of his classmates, John sacrificed to succeed at BC High, often staying with grandparents in Savin Hill to spend more time on schoolwork rather than commuting home to Braintree each night. After graduation, he felt the power of the school’s outstanding alumni network almost immediately. John scored one of his first jobs, as a title search assistant in a law firm, simply because of his alma mater. “Despite never having met, BC High alumni look out for one another,” he said. “They care about each other, simply because we all shared in the lessons, experiences and challenges that BC High presented to us.”

“Now, 13 years since I last attended, the reason I give is frankly because I miss my time there,” John said. “Giving back makes me feel connected with the school and the high caliber of individuals with whom I had the privilege of interacting on a daily basis. Youth of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow On Thursday afternoon, March 10, 2016, newly sworn-in Governor Trent Chinnaswamy ’16, a Dedham resident and a senior at Boston College High School, ascended to the speaker’s rostrum in the House of Representatives at the State House in Massachusetts and laid out his administration’s priorities to the state’s constitutional officers, members of his cabinet, members of the Senate, the House, and the judiciary who were gathered before him.

“We will focus on four areas,” the governor said, “Protecting the environment, improving education, increasing healthcare access, and preserving the social well-being of the citizens of Massachusetts.”

With that, the 33rd state conference of Youth & Government Massachusetts was under way.

he Youth & Government program is run by the YMCA through its units across the state in association with high schools like BC High and Presentation of Mary Academy in Methuen. Hundreds of volunteers, teachers and elected officials also support the program.

Its mission is several-fold: to have participants meet other students from across the commonwealth and the country to discuss issues of local, state, national, and international importance; to have the students connect with real-life state officials and community leaders; to have them exercise leadership and public speaking skills that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives; and to have them strengthen their communities by becoming active and responsible contributors who are inspired to lead and empowered to create meaningful change.

Trent Chinnaswamy was one of 24 BC High students who participated in the three-day conference on Beacon Hill where, on the first day, the leaders of the three branches and other officials take their oaths of office. The Lieutenant Governor, Cameron Kubera ’16, a Milton resident, and Tom Arena ’16 of Whitman, the chief justice of the state appeals court, also hail from Morrissey Boulevard, as did a cabinet member and a large number of committee chairmen.

Over the course of the three days, students followed a governmental assembly program featuring legislative, judicial, lobbyist, and media functions. Several pre-conference sessions were held in advance of the statewide event to create bills for the legislative calendar at the final meeting in March where business was conducted in rooms across the historic golden-domed State

House. Bills were debated, often forcefully, by legislators and lobbyists and those that passed were sent to the governor for his consideration; more quietly, student judges like Tom Arena presided over mock trials and delivered up or down decisions.

“The legislature took up about 100 bills,” said Gov. Chinnaswamy. “About 60 were enacted, and we said no to 40 others.” The bills imitated the real things. BC High student Tim Lynch’s ’18 committee approved a bill that would declare solitary confinement illegal in Massachusetts prisons and jails; Cameron Wood’s ’17 panel sent the governor a bill that would require all public school districts to have one guidance counselor for every 250 students; and George Carney’s ’18 committee okayed a bill requiring the state to provide solar panels in town halls across the Commonwealth.

Chinnaswamy, who is headed to the University of Virginia in the fall where he plans to prepare himself for a role in local politics, set the tone for the legislative assembly on the first day of the conference: “The primary purpose of writing a bill in Youth & Government is not to make it become a law. That may come later, but the first purpose is to explore your passions, and use them to start a conversation with your peers using the democratic process.

The March conference is a hearty punctuation to months of hard work by Youth & Government participants at BC High, said the team’s faculty moderator of five years’ standing, Elise Wilson. “It’s a club activity, and beginning in September, we aim to meet every Friday after school for 45 minutes. Our number is up near 40 now, and with my co-advisor, Michael Chapman, who teaches science in the Arrupe Division, we work to advance ideas and process matters for the three pre-conferences in November, January, and February that are usually held on college campuses.”

Wilson said there is a seriousness of purpose in the months leading up to the final conference. “Lots of communication,” she said, “and extensive use of all the tools of social media comes into play as students build a sense of community with their peers statewide.”

Gov. Chinnaswamy, Lt. Gov. Kubera, who is headed to Boston College in September to take up international studies, and Chief Justice Arena, headed to George Washington University to pursue a degree in engineering, echo Ms. Wilson’s thoughts. “It has been a good thing for all of us,” said Chinnaswamy. “I have been involved in the program for four years and remember when it was hard to get even 10 people to participate. Now 40 is a working number for us.”

In addition to the three leaders, Peter Keogh ’16 served as chief lobbyist in the March program; Delano Franklin ’17 was a committee chair; George Carney was a cabinet member; and Carlos Tamayo ’17 was the sergeant at arms.

Ryan Golemme ’19, Ryan Ridolfo ’19, Keogh, Deen Haleem ’17, and Tim Smyth ’18 all had their bills passed and signed into law. Charlie McMahon ’19 was on the winning prosecution team.

BC High students also won individual recognitions at the conference banquet.

Jack Michalski ’17 won for Outstanding Legal Brief, and Cameron Kubera won the prestigious Ginny Robinson Servant Leadership Award. Lastly, Deen Haleem, Delano Franklin, Cam Kubera, Carlos Tamayo, and Ryan Golemme were selected to represent Massachusetts at the Conference on National Affairs later this summer.

VIRGINIA GETS ITS MAN Trent Chinnaswamy ’16, the governor of Youth & Government Massachusetts for the past four years, is heading for another of the nation’s Commonwealths this fall. He has been named a recipient of a Jefferson Scholarship from the University of Virginia, which says its goal is to attract to its campus the most promising leaders, scholars, and citizens in the world.

The undergraduate scholarship program has been inviting and cultivating undergraduate leaders since 1980, providing them sufficient financial support so that they are free to develop their talents and to use them for the good of the University community.

A look at his BC High experience suggests strongly that Trent is ready to take up the challenge. “He is a born leader, though he would not describe himself that way,” says guidance counselor Judith Fargo.

Delano Franklin ’17 will take over as governor for the 2016-2017 school year.

He has been a member of the student council the past two years and served as its president for the 2015-2016 school year. By all accounts, Trent has a natural ability to make others feel at ease and for that, and a host of other reasons, he was selected to be a mentor in his junior and senior years. As a senior mentor, he worked closely with the freshman class to help them adjust to life at BC High.

A member of the National Honor Society, he tutors twice a week in the campus Learning Center. He is also an athlete. He has run track and been on the swim team, but his two passions are sailing and cyclo-cross. He has sailed much of his life, has been on the BC High team since his freshman year, and this year was team captain.

Cyclo-cross is a new club sport. Two years ago a group began a cycling club that morphed into cyclo-cross. The students cycle on local paths and enter races all over the area. Since this is not a “normal” high school club, the competition is on an individual basis and typically not against other high school kids. It is a close-knit club, the students love it, and he is a co-captain this year.

Trent has volunteered many hours to community service. He he has been volunteering with the Pan-Mass Challenge since age 11, packing equipment bags in preparation for the event, working at water stations along the route and helping to set up and clean up for the event. He also has helped at the Brothers of the Sacred Heart’s homeless mission by making lunches and organizing the food and clothing pantry.

JACK LOUGHNANE ’16 GRADUATES WITH 1,034 CAREER POINTS Jack Loughnane graduated this past May and will be playing college hoops for St. Anselm next season. Jack averaged 17.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 2.1 steals per game for the Eagles.

He earned inclusion on the Boston Herald Dream Team, 2nd Team AllState ESPN, Boston Globe All-Scholastics, Patriot Ledger South Shore Player of the Year, All Senior Team for Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association and Catholic Conference All-State honors while wearing the maroon and gold for BC High.

CONGRATS TO SULLY! “If you know Sully and have witnessed his knowledge and passion for the game of hockey, you are not surprised that he is now a Stanley Cup Champion. His path may have been different than others, but his ability to teach and communicate with every player is second to none.” – BC High hockey coach John Flaherty ’88 BC High Hall of Fame Inductee Mike Sullivan ’86, P’12 certainly turned things around after replacing Mike Johnston as Pittsburgh Penguins head coach on December 12, 2015. Pittsburgh was 15-10-3 when Mike took over and out of a playoff spot. Six months to the day later, the Penguins won the championship by defeating the San Jose Sharks, the team with which Sullivan began his NHL playing career in 1991.

A native of Marshfield, MA, Mike’s BC High career began in 1982, playing for the Eagles all four years before moving onto the Boston University Terriers. Mike played 709 games in the NHL over 11 seasons with four ON THE PODIUM different teams, including The Eagles posted impressive athletic results in 2015-16: the Sharks, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and the CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS: Phoenix Coyotes.

BC High fans were happy to see that Mike kept his career going by turning to coaching and landing with the Bruins from 2003-06 and other teams before taking over in Pittsburgh this past winter. We are extremely proud of Mike and his ability to inspire his players and to always dream big. Congratulations to Mike and his family.

Eagles rugby: state champions again!

BACK-TO-BACK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR RUGBY The varsity team finished the year with another perfect record for the season, led by captains Patrick McDonough ’16, CJ Reilly ’16 and Noah Peterson ’16. “This year’s team really trusted one another and came together in a special way,” said Coach Paul Carty. “We have some really strong individual players, but we felt like anyone on the team could create and exploit gaps in our opponents’ defense. Defensively we were as strong as we’ve ever been at BC High – really impressive stuff.”

Following the undefeated regular season, the Eagles earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs and faced challenging conference rival Xaverian at home during the semi-finals. After pulling off a big win against the Hawks, the team turned its attention to the state championship against St. John’s Prep.

On a scorching 100 degree day in Worcester, BC High overcame an early deficit to beat St. John’s Prep 41-17 in the Massachusetts Youth Rugby State High School championship on May 29, 2016. In preparing for his players’ final match, Coach Carty stressed the fundamentals of teamwork and their training that got them to the postseason.

Coach had a special message to his seniors on their final high school game, “Go out and have fun and play great rugby. Enjoy the moment!” And so they did.

The BC High baseball team also enjoyed a fantastic spring. The Eagles dominated the Catholic Conference regular season and were selected for their second straight Super 8 Tournament appearance, this time as the bracket’s No. 1 seed. BC High defeated Newton North in the opening round but dropped its next two games. Star pitcher Mike Vasil ’18 won Conference Most Valuable Player honors, and teammates Henry Ennen ’16, Adam McCormack ’16, and Brendan McDonald ’16 joined him as Conference All-Stars.

LACROSSE MAKES SCHOOL HISTORY BC High’s varsity lacrosse team achieved its finest season in program history this spring, capturing its first Division I South championship and reaching the state finals. Led by ace attackman A.J. Kucinski ’16, the Eagles earned the No. 1 seed in the Division I South tournament. There, they won three straight home games, including a stirring 10-9 victory over rival Xaverian. In the South final against Newton North, the Eagles scored the game’s first five goals and never trailed in a 10-6 triumph.

That victory sent BC High to face defending Eastern Mass champion LincolnSudbury in the Division I final at Boston University’s Nickerson Field. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Eagles’ fantastic playoff run ended with a 10-8 loss.

In recognition of Joseph Corcoran’s ‘53 work in providing affordable

Rev. William Kremmell ’57 celebrated the 50th anniversary of ordination to priesthood in May. Father retired from St. Athanasius Parish in Reading in 2010 and has become a senior priest. In his retirement, Fr. Kremmell conducts retreats and days of recollection and has just written a book on the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Stanley Grabowski ‘57 recently checked in with the BC High Alumni Office with an update on his life since high school. He went to Jamaica in 1961 as a lay missionary from Boston College and taught until 1967 at St George’s College, a Jesuit high school.

He met his wife in Jamaica. Although Stanley and his family returned several times to Jamaica, they returned to the States in 1978, where he continued his teaching at Franciscan High School in Fort Myers, FL. He finally retired from full-time teaching in 2007.

Jim Hooley ‘58 was honored by The Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Legends at a luncheon during March Madness. He averaged 24.2 points per game 1960-62, clearly distinguishing himself as the highest scoring Eagle of his day, and graduated holding what were then school records for career, single-game and single-season scoring.

When he passed the 1,000-point career mark during his senior year, he became only the third player in school history at the time to achieve that milestone.

Hooley was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979.

Rev. Jack Izzo, SJ and Bob Foley, both from the class of 1958, have started a new project: a lay-Jesuit collaboration promoting Ignatian Spirituality through the 300-mile Camino Ignaciano, the route St. Ignatius took when he underwent his conversion from a noble caballero to a poor nameless pilgrim.

Members of the class of 1958 gathered for their spring lunch in May. As always, memories of inflated accomplishments during the years on Morrissey Boulevard were shared. On a more serious note, Jack MacKinnon led prayerful remembrance of classmates who have been called home to the Lord since our fall gathering.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Bob Walsh ‘59 spent a morning back in the classroom at BC High. This time Bob wasn’t a student, but a teacher to several sections of the 7th grade Arrupe Division. Bob discussed city planning and redevelopment.

Dr. Al Andrea ‘59 and his wife Juanita, in additon to their world travels, ventured back to Morrissey Blvd. for the annual Magis Dinner this spring.

Bob McHugh ‘59 is working diligently on his bucket list.

He has visited 70 countries so far and hopes, by the time he turns 80, to have visited 80. Happy trails, Bob.

The 60s Rev. Ed McCabe ‘60 retired in June from the pastorate of St. Ann Parish in West Bridgewater, where he was stationed after his military career.

Six graduates from the class of 1963 toured the new Monan Park at BC High after their June class luncheon at Amrhein’s. Ernie Johnson ’63, Bob Galibois ’63, John O’Leary ’63, Fran Donlan ’63, Brian Sullivan ’63 and John Flynn ’63.

Friends from the class of 1963 gathered at Amrhein’s in South Boston for their bi-annual luncheon on June 8. The class has worked together to establish a new endowed BC High scholarship fund of $100,000 which began as part of their 50th reunion.

BC High held an Alumni Day of Service on January 20. The “Companions in Service” day was designed to provide an opportunity for BC High alumni to give back to the local community while strengthening ties with fellow graduates.

Alumni sorted, counted and packed food at the Greater Boston Food Bank. Outfitted in their new maroon and gold “Companions in Service” t-shirts, the group processed 5,975 pounds of food which is enough to make 4,944 meals.

The NFL, in celebrating 50 years of Super Bowls, sent an NFL Game Ball to the respective high schools of NFL players who have participated in the Super Bowl over the past 49 games. Jim Rourke ‘75, played in Super Bowl XXIII, as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals (vs San Francisco). Jim played seven years in Kansas City, one year in new Orleans, and then in Cincinnati. Walter Robinson ’63 is continuing the conversation on investigative journalism and the role the press can play as a guest lecturer around the world. His work on the Globe’s Spotlight team inspired the 2016 Oscar-winning movie Spotlight.

Brian Sullivan ‘63 was the keynote speaker for the Town of Plymouth’s Memorial Day celebration at Memorial Hall in downtown Plymouth on Monday May 30, 2016. Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan (Ret) is a Vietnam Veteran, recipient of the Bronze Star and the Massachusetts National Guard’s most prestigious award, the Medal of Valor. Sullivan is leading efforts, in conjunction with the Department of Defense, to honor the town’s boots-on-the-ground Vietnam Veterans on Veterans Day 2016 by giving them the Welcome Home they never received.

Boston College hockey coach Jerry York ‘63 reached the 1,000-win mark for his career in his 1,703rd game as a head coach. In all, York’s record is 1,000-595-108 (.619) in 44 seasons at the head coach level and 533-260-74 (.658) in his 22nd season at the helm of Boston College. York is the 128th coach to reach 1,000 across the big four (football, basketball, baseball and hockey) professional sports leagues and Division I college athletics. At the collegiate level, York is the 55th head coach to reach 1,000-career victories and the first to do so in college hockey.

York remains the winningest coach in the history of the game.

Dr. Poul LaPlante ‘65 is enjoying “retirement” from his practice. Poul is very active in medical service projects and other humanitarian activities both at home and abroad.

Francis Saba ‘67 recently retired from Milford Regional Medical Center.

Steve “the Pirate” Durant ’71, those who attended the afternoon session were happy to have been able to forge a bit deeper connection and to share stories of successes and challenges that we all face as time marches on. All agreed that our joint goal is to “finish strong” as men for others and for each other.

The 70s The Honorable Michael Downes ’70 of the Snohomish County Superior Court has been elected President of the State of Washington Superior Court Judges’ Association this past spring.

The class of 1971 had more than 50 alumni return to campus from all corners of the United States for their 45th Reunion in April. A wonderful evening was had by all, and about half of the attendees joined in an afternoon “retreat” session over at Gate of Heaven in Southie. Under the guidance of Jack Baronas ’71 and Dr.

Vergilian Society for 2017-2019. The Vergilian Society, founded in 1937, sponsors conferences and study programs in the US, Italy, and elsewhere around the Mediterranean on the Roman poet Vergil, his world, and his influence, and publishes a scholarly journal.

Kevin Norton, Ed Smith, Kevin Flynn, Jack Dunn, Dave McCarthy, and Bill Fitzpatrick, all from class of 1979,attended this year’s St. Ignatius Award ceremony in support of fellow classmate Trustee Jack Dunn’79, P’16.

The 80s Photographer George Wilson ‘83 resides near Orlando, FL and was recently profiled online with Photoflex, a lighting supplier and online journal.

Peter DiMarzio ‘83 has created a new organization titled “100 Guys Who Care Boston.” The mission brings together 100-plus guys who either live or work in Boston who care about local community causes and are committed to helping them out. Four times a year, the group will meet for an hour and vote for a local charity to support.

Gary Rinkus ‘84 spoke to the newly formed BC High Business Club about his company VerMints. The company sells to Trader Joes and also has a presence internationally. Gary was very well received by the students and following the discussion spent time discussing the BC High Internship Program.

Coleman Nee ‘86, P’17 was recently appointed CEO of Triangle, Inc. Based in Malden, MA, Triangle is a non-profit organization that provides the innovative career, leadership, and safety skills to people with disabilities and their families, skills which they need to live more independent and fulfilling lives. Most recently, Nee served as the Secretary of Veterans’ Services for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Alumni News Notes Oklahoma Baseball Coach Pete Hughes ‘86 achieved his 600th career win early in the spring baseball season against Texas.

Congratulations to our alumni that have been ordained to the priesthood this past spring:

The 90s Former Northeastern University basketball assistant and Stonehill College head coach David McLaughlin ‘92 will take over as head basketball coach at Dartmouth College. The Brockton native has lofty goals to lift the Big Green to the top of the Ivy League standings.

Liam Kennedy ‘93 will be riding in the Annual Bike MS: Cape Cod again this year. Liam’s team “Liam’s Lucky Charms” has been the top fundraising team for the last six years, raising more than $400,000 last year.

John Glennon, Jr. ‘95 was named Headmaster at Georgtown Prep after serving as Assistant Headmaster at the school for nearly a year. Previously, John helped found the Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School, which will see its first graduates in June 2016.

John is a product of Jesuit education, having graduated from Georgtown University with multiple degrees.

When Mike Agricola ‘88 became the owner of Savatore’s Restaurant in Lawrence, one of the first things he did was to partner with the Daybreak Homeless Shelter. He visited with members of his staff to provide and serve a gourmet meal to the guests at Daybreak.

BC High Trustee John Carroll ‘86, a Partner in Summit Partners, met with the BC High Business Club in May to discuss venture capital as a career path.

The Society of Jesus Ordained 20 New Priests in the United States, Canada and Haiti and Kevin Spinale ‘96 was among the new members. The new priests are looking ahead joyfully to serving the Catholic Church. As ordination approached, Spinale said, “We are ready to serve as priests because we have had so much experience – we’re ready to hit the ground running.”

Fantasy and science fiction author Auston Habershaw ‘96 gave a brief reading of his new novel No Good Deed, to members of the Hingham Public Library. Habershaw is a winner of the Writers of the Future Contest and has published work in Analog and Galaxy’s Edge, among others. No Good Deed, the second book of his fantasy series The Saga of the Redeemed.

Deacon Thomas Sullivan ‘00 was ordained a priest on May 21 by Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Father Thomas is eager to begin his work at Saint Catherine of Siena, Norwood.

Jude Telefort, MD ’97 visited campus as a guest speaker for the Black & Latino Student Union. Dr. Telefort spoke about his career path to becoming an Anesthesiologist.

The Chamber of Commerce presented a land deed signed by Daniel Webster to US Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue.

The US Chamber is on a piece of property where Webster lived while he was Secretary of State. The land deed was for a piece of property Webster owned in the midwest and was sold to raise funds to purchase the land in DC. David Benoit ‘04 was named the Wall Street Journal’s Business Journalist of the Year. David, who took over the shareholder activist beat at The Journal two years ago, has had a strong year.

He broke the news about the DuPontDow Chemical deal, and then followed that up with stories about how the deal came about and one investor’s fight to oust Dow’s CEO. Earlier this year, Benoit’s coverage included how investors were encouraging Yahoo to split itself up and how some activist investors were taking a more passive approach to some company stakes.

Drew Calcagno ‘11 couldn’t make this year’s five year reunion for the class of 2011 because he was enrolled in graduate studies on a Fulbright Scholarship for the University of London. After a year at the University of London, Drew will matriculate to Oxford University as a rotary scholar before entering into the US Navy for his five year service requirement as a graduate of the United States Naval Academy.

Daniel Roche ‘11 traveled to Kenya in April to build a childrens library that he designed in the city of Kabernet, Kenya. The city is an old French Jesuit settlement in Northern Kenya, so even when not in the States, he still remains in the circles of Jesuit influences.

The 10s Dominic Venuti ‘11 received his Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from UMass Amherst in May of 2015. He is now working as an account executive for WBZ Radio & CBS Boston and in the process of being approved to become a member

Bobby Melley ’12 collegiate baseball career is rounding third and heading for home. Melley is a senior first baseman for the baseball team at the University of Connecticut, where he has been a starter since game one of his freshman year.

Bobby helped this year’s Huskies win the AAC tournament chapionship. Bobby’s baseball career isn’t over, he was just drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Faculty and Staff Notes Taking a cue from the recent Papal encyclical “Laudato Si – On Care for Our Common Home,” the faculty and staff of BC High came together on Friday, April 29 to volunteer locally in the Dorchester and Boston area. The biennial service day allows faculty and staff to grow closer together as a community, as well as being of service to our neighbors.

Members from every department made up the groups that visited sites in Dorchester and South Boston that included the Barry Street Garden, Erie Green, Mother’s Beach, Carson Beach, Charles River, Dorchester Park, Savin Hill Park, Boys & Girls Club, Dorchester, BC High, The Boston Home, McKinnley School Garden, Haley House and Boston Shines.

Faculty and staff planted gardens, pulled weeds, collected trash, cleaned up parks, moved sand and re-built a sea wall during their time together.

English teacher Christina Baik gave the opening address at the Facing History & Ourselves Gala and is also featured on its website. Facing History is an organization that fosters empathy and reflection, improves students’ academic performance, reinvigorates teachers, and builds safe and inclusive schools.

Surrounded by family and friends, the mass was held at the bride’s lifetime church, St. Colman’s in Brockton.

Besides the sacrament of matrimony, the groom was also confirmed and received first Eucharist during the mass.

Together, with Keynote Speaker Piper Kerman, prison reformist and author of Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, we celebrated our commitment to improving our communities and to serving as companions to others on their lives’ journey.

Last summer, our students, faculty and staff were asked to read Bryan Stevenson’s best-selling book, Just Mercy. Mr. Stevenson writes about his work as an attorney representing youth who have been sentenced to life imprisonment or death, and how that work transformed his understanding of mercy and justice. He calls for a new approach to what he sees as a broken portion of our justice system. Our students and teachers discussed the book, related writings, and contemporary, reallife examples in class throughout the year.

Additionally, we welcomed Mr. Stevenson to campus in March to speak about his work.

Q&A: John Ferraro ’73 Chair, BC High Presidential Search Committee Board seeks an energetic, visionary leader who will boldly steward our school into the future. The Presidential Profile Description helps to define that leader through eight essential abilities:

Upon Bill Kemeza’s announcing his retirement as BC High President, effective in 2017, the Board of Trustees appointed a seven-person search committee to select the school’s 28th President. John Ferraro ’73 is the Search Committee Chair. John took time to share some of his perspectives on the search.

What is the process for finding the next BC High President?

The Committee strives to ensure that the search for BC High’s next president will be as inclusive and thorough as possible. We held 14 listening sessions earlier this year with faculty, staff, students, Jesuits, parents, and alumni to solicit input on the essential attributes the next president should possess. The Committee also has discussed the search with the USA Northeast Jesuit Provincial and retained national executive search firm, Isaacson, Miller, to assist in building and assessing a diverse candidate pool. The Committee will identify, engage, research, recruit, and interview top candidates from that pool, and it plans to present a final candidate or candidates to the Board at its January 2017 meeting. The Board will vote on the Committee’s recommendation, and the Provincial must approve the new President as well. We intend for the new President to begin his or her tenure on or before July 1, 2017.

LET’S PLAY BALL! On May 6, 2016, more than 100 members of the Boston College High School and University of Massachusetts Boston communities gathered for the formal dedication of J. Donald Monan, SJ Park.

Monan Park is a public/private partnership supported by a $2 million gift from the Yawkey Foundation. It is named after J. Donald Monan, SJ to honor his outstanding educational leadership, vision, and commitment to the City of Boston.

“I have received many honors,” Fr. Monan told the crowd, “but this ranks as one of the most special of all because of the partnership between BC High and UMass. I am thrilled to be part of this wonderful project.”

Fr. Monan provided the dedication’s highlight when he threw a ceremonial first pitch to Yawkey Foundation President James Healey. Flanked by the UMB and BC High varsity baseball teams, the 91-year-old Fr. Monan waved Healey to move further away from him, and then showed off his strength with an impressive toss.

Fr. Monan closed the event that featured comments from University of Massachusetts Boston Chancellor J. Keith Motley and BC High President William Kemeza. Rev. Brian Conley, SJ, Rector of the BC High Jesuit Community and a school trustee, blessed the field and all who will play on it.

Many key supporters of the Monan Park project also attended the event, including Healey, Yawkey Foundation Chairman John Harrington, Boston Bruins Foundation Executive Director Bob Sweeney, Rockland Trust Board Member Maurice H. Sullivan Jr. ’63, BC High Trustee John Murphy ’67, P’98, and Leo Corcoran ’77.

Monan Park’s two fields will host both the UMB and BC High baseball programs. The main field is built to the exact dimensions of Fenway Park and has earned reviews as one of the finest amateur baseball facilities in New England.

The complex also will be busy during the summer months, with events such as the Bay State Summer Games Baseball Showcase, the

Remembering Reverend James J. Hosie, SJ Our entire school community mourns the loss of Reverend James J. Hosie, SJ, who passed to eternal life on May 30. Fr. Hosie spent more than 60 years of service in the Jesuits with the majority of that time spent as an educator. In 1987, when he returned from teaching at St. George’s College of Kingston, Jamaica. he was urged

by Jesuit administrators at BC High to apply for a position. He joined the faculty at the school in 1989.

He had a whole second career at BC High. For the next 26 years, he taught scripture to upperlevel students, including a senior Greek New Testament course co-taught with a classics teacher. He also coached tennis. In 1991, he initiated a 19th Annotation Retreat program for the faculty that continues to this day. During summer months he

regularly directed retreats at Campion and at Gloucester and occasionally in the Caribbean. He also kept in touch with former students from St. George’s and attended their Old Boys’ meetings in Jamaica, Toronto, and Florida.

His time spent teaching, coaching and leading spiritual retreats for the community were some of his happiest days. He was a man of faith, integrity and compassion and he will be greatly missed. Due to declining health, Fr. Hosie retired during this past school year, and BC High had the opportunity to thank him for his years of service at an all-school assembly in January.

When asked to leave his parting wisdom, he was quick to say, “Stay in the game that is your life. Play well while you can, and when you can’t anymore – coach.”

TOMORROW’S LEADERS HERE TODAY

A notion of leadership runs through all things Jesuit. At Boston College High School, we aspire in our mission to form leaders of competence, compassion, and character, and we assert our community as a leader among Jesuit schools worldwide, particularly in global education.

The leadership we champion is best viewed through an Ignatian prism centering on a pair of seemingly paradoxical constructs: contemplation and action. Our high-speed society values action as a sign of strength, and often it is. But the Society of Jesus, both today and in the time of St. Ignatius, has called for more depth in our decision-making. Jesuit-educated men and women have strived for centuries to show that the contemplation-action tandem can inspire individuals to serve one another and join together to revitalize our world.

Contemplation is a vital tool for leaders who face daily dilemmas over competing claims for resources. Nowhere is this a greater challenge than in government, where elected servants are charged with difficult choices that shape our lives. I am convinced that Jesuit-educated public servants are uniquely equipped to discern among those choices and act in pursuit of the magis – that is, the greater good for the community he or she serves.

Contemplation also suggests retreat, however brief or extended, from the noise of news cycles and partisanship. I bet the leaders Ignatius would admire most are the ones that find a synergy between perspectives gained in educated dialogue and perspectives discovered deep within themselves. That proper balance is more easily accessible to graduates of Jesuit schools because of the personal formation they have embraced on our campuses for centuries.

In his landmark work The First Jesuits, Georgetown University professor John O’Malley cites Juan de Polanco, SJ, Ignatius’ secretary, as maintaining that Jesuit colleges were powerful instruments “for the reform of cities.” Our language might be gentler today, but I am convinced the spirit of Polanco’s message holds: tomorrow’s best prepared leaders of our communities, our country, and our Church, and our best hope for a healthy, prosperous future, are studying in Jesuit schools today.

Our confidence comes in part from our tradition of graduates who have led our military and our Commonwealth with action that made us proud. We count Governor Edward J. King RIP ’43, Attorney General Robert H. Quinn, Esq. RIP ’45, House Speaker William M. Bulger ’52, and four-star generals George W. Casey ’66, Joseph T. Dunford, Jr. ’73, Joseph P. Hoar ’52, and John J. Sheehan ’58 as distinguished alumni. Addressing the Class of 2016 as our Commencement Speaker in May, General Dunford framed leadership in action in familiar terms. “Being a man for others,” he said, “is not abstract or an overly-high standard that only a few extraordinary individuals can attain. … In fact, it’s something every BC High graduate should expect to attain.”

A quick glance at the headlines reminds us the stakes for leaders both locally and globally remain quite high. Now more than ever, educating leaders must continue to include an emphasis not only on academic excellence but also the possibility of transforming our neighborhoods, towns, and beyond. We must send our young men into the world with prayerful contemplation emblazoned on their hearts so that throughout their lives they can separate from the world’s bustle and act truly as men for others.
