LIFE IS GAME OF TAKING RISKS

THERE COMES A TIME IN LIFE when you are faced with a choice that involves risk. For my parents, it was moving to the United States from their home country of Ireland for the chance of a better life and more opportunities. For me, if was following my heart and leaving a career on Wall Street to return to BC High as a teacher. Even though it was a calculated risk, I had my doubts that I could ever live up to the standards of teaching that I experienced as a student.

Stephen Healy is a graduate of the Boston College High School Class of 1981, where he was a three sport athlete all four years, earning him the coveted Murphy award given in recognition of athletics, academics, and overall school involvement. As a senior, Steve pitched for Coach Norm Walsh’s first Catholic Conference championship team.

As a 1985 graduate of John Carroll University, Steve was named Most Valuable Player of the baseball team, as well as, MVP for the President’s Athletic Conference while earning his business degree. Steve then went onto Boston University to earn his MBA. Prior to returning to BC High he worked for Dean Witter and McDonald KeyBanc in capital markets.

In 2007, Steve returned to BC High to teach math and coach baseball. He just concluded his eighth season as JV baseball coach with an impressive 18-2 season. He lives in Hanover with his wife Tara and their three daughters.

When I arrived on Morrissey Boulevard in the fall of 1977, my parents wanted my brother Paul ’82 and I to attend BC High because they valued education, and more importantly, the shaping of our character. As much as they respected a good education they regarded the benefit of hard work even more. My dad spent his whole career as a butcher for Stop & Shop and my mom spent hers as a nurse at St. Margaret’s to pay for the tuition at BC High and Fontbonne Academy for my two sisters.

Many of my fellow alumni will remember visiting Fr. Bennett, SJ ’45 and checking out a basketball to shoot hoops during lunch. Little did I know that the time I spent in the gym would be less about basketball and more about talking and listening to Reverend Al Hicks, SJ. Conversations with Fr. Hicks would range from how to live a good life to underage drinking. I have never forgotten the advice that he gave me almost 30 years ago, “Steve, live your life in thirds. Spend the first part learning, get as many degrees as possible, STUDY hard. The second third, achieve, be the best you can be at your chosen profession. Lastly, give back – teach, mentor, or volunteer but give of yourself!”

As a teenager, I didn’t fully appreciate these words, but as an adult the advice has served as a road map for navigating life.

These visits to the gym became less about shooting hoops and more about the advice from Fr. Hicks. This mentoring from Fr. Hicks and other BC High faculty and coaches provided me with the confidence to take risks in the classroom and on the field, to not fear failure. Risk by nature is scary. It is uncertain and unpredictable, but you will never hit the ball if you don’t swing at it. Rolling from season to season and being coached by legends such as Jim Cotter ’55 in football, John Normant ’64 in indoor track, and Norm Walsh ’70 in baseball made me appreciate hard work, discipline, and perseverance, the exact values my parents wanted for their kids.

After attending college at John Carroll University I entered the work force as a stockbroker with Dean Witter. Remembering Fr. Hicks’ advice, I went back to school and earned my MBA from Boston University at night while beginning a family and advancing my career in the financial services industry. Starting as a retail broker, I progressed into institutional fixed income and then into institutional equities. Eventually I became a senior managing director for KeyBanc and for the better part of 10 years managed their Boston office. Through the years, I stayed connected to BC High as an alumnus. When I learned that the school would be opening a 7th and 8th grade in the fall of 2007, I went to Principal Steve Hughes ’73 and asked him to take a chance and hire me to teach math.

For the last eight years I have had the good fortune to teach hundreds of fine young men. Our students need teachers to shape their character, to listen to their troubles, teach them how to solve algebraic equations, and to pass along a little wisdom much like Fr. Hicks. I can honestly say that every Sunday I look forward to the week ahead as a teacher, co-worker, and coach. I especially enjoy the last five minutes of each class when the lesson has been taught and there is time to talk about current events and life in general. These moments are so rewarding for me. I can see firsthand how today’s BC High students haven’t really changed all that much from my days on Morrissey Boulevard and I am glad I can share this time with them.

Students Win Premier Delegation Award at YMCA Youth in Government Conference In March, 24 BC High students participated in and won the Premier

Delegation award at the annual YMCA Youth in Government Conference at the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill. The Premiere Delegation award is only awarded to delegations who go above and beyond and model the Y Core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

The BC High team, in addition to the Premier Delegation award, had 15 bills successively pass into law; they effectively lobbied, argued Constitutionality of laws; and they debated in the House and Senate chambers.

The Youth in Government Club, moderated by faculty members Elise Wilson and Michael Chapman, is part of a Greater Boston YMCA program which allows high school students to learn about state government and participate in the process of the State House with other students from throughout Massachusetts. Students take on various roles in the state government including the legislative, executive, and judicial branches as well as lobbyists and the press corps.

The ceremony, which marks the 151st graduating class, also included an inspirational message from two student speakers. Student Council President Will Doyle ’15 reminded his classmates of the shared bonds and the journey they have taken over the last four years and that, “Our

success will be measured by how we treat other people, that is the message we will take from this Jesuit school and what BC High is all about.”

Jack Ditomassi ’15 urged his classmates, “To take their pursuit of excellence seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously, remember to laugh. Laughter makes me think of our class and the good times we have together.” Jack closed his speech with a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ‘If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.’”

Also during the ceremony, a longstanding tradition at BC High is to honor the Golden Jubilee graduating class. The Class of 1965 received a 50th anniversary diploma and was asked to join in the benediction and blessing of our newest alumni.

city projects

Studying Wind Energy Seventh grade students have been working throughout the year on their City Projects, an interdisciplinary approach to learning about urban planning. Using information from social studies, science, and English classes, student groups created their own cities. In science, students were challenged to evaluate energy sources for their city to use.

The wind turbine project helped students visualize and experience how turbines work, and what considerations must be made when building them. This tied in directly with their energy source choices that they had to make for their city. Students took on the roles of engineers as they worked in groups to first test individual variables’ affects on power output (i.e. shape of blades, number of blades, blade pitch, etc.), before using all of their data and knowledge to create a blade configuration that produced the maximum output possible from the turbine.

As students were being introduced to engineering, they had to overcome their fear of failure and learn from their mistakes. Instead of looking at their struggles as an end-all to the project, students were encouraged to learn from blades that didn’t perform well, redesign, and improve.

hyde center for global education

Students Study in India This past April, a group of 11 BC High

students and two teachers traveled to Darjeeling, India, as part of the inaugural Hyde Center for Global Education immersion trip.

The first few days in Darjeeling were spent attending St. Joseph’s High School, North Point, a Jesuit high school set at the base of the scenic and majestic Himalayan Mountains. The group was welcomed by the school community, host families, and

by BC High’s own Mr. Seth Kirby, who has been teaching abroad since January.

One of the most memorable parts of the trip was the time spent at St. Joseph’s as explained by Matt Veale ’15, “From the

moment we stepped onto the campus we were greeted with wide smiles and open arms and we rapidly created friendships and bonds with the North Point students. It was amazing to realize how alike we all are. Whether it was the BC High vs. North Point basketball games played after school or the rap singing battles that went on in the halls, we all had a great time with the North Point students.”

During the trip to Darjeeling, and neighboring Nepal, the group was exposed to diverse experiences, which included visits to Buddhist monasteries, Hindu temples, the world famous Darjeeling Tea Gardens,

as well as several days of hiking and a climb to the peak of Sandakphu (12,000 feet) to view four out of the five highest mountain peaks in the world including Mount Everest.

No trip to India would be complete without visiting the wondrous Taj Mahal.

corehub real estate tool gains notice

Seniors Win Venture Capital Money Recent graduates, Emaad Ali ’15, Ahmed Fareed ’15, Justin Montes ’15, and Niamke Giraud ’15 partnered with Boston College students Matt Burke, Christopher Castro, Doug Bent, and Gaetan Daphnis, who all happen to be from the BC High Class of 2011, to compete in the Boston College Venture Competition (BCVC) this past April with their CoreHub product.

CoreHub, the company that won this year’s first place $20,000 prize is a commercial real estate tool.

The start-up looks to connect buyers and sellers, tenants and brokers, using GPS and advanced search capability. BC High seniors Ali, Fareed, Montes and Giraud who have been managing their own company called Parallel since their sophomore year, leveraged their technical expertise to elevate CoreHub at this year’s BCVC. The collaboration of the two student groups was made possible by the Boston College High School alumni LinkedIn group.

BCVC, a program of the Carroll School of Management is a contest to promote entrepreneurship at Boston College. Business plans were submitted, and finalists were chosen to present at this annual venture capital competition. Five finalists competed for a grand prize of $20,000 with quick pitches on marketability and the effectiveness of the product.

internship program launches summer 2015

BC HIRE:

Launching 45 Internships In the last issue of BC High Today, we formally announced the BC High internship program and our alumni answered the call. The program, named BC Hire, set a goal of 25 paid positions for the summer of 2015. Once again, BC High’s alumni network showed its strength, and the internship program is now offering 45 paid positions this summer.

Our students will be working with leading companies in finance, real estate, law, construction, retail, health care, technology, and environmental consulting.

And, our reach goes beyond Boston – internships are available around the country, including positions in New Hampshire, California, Washington, DC, and Florida.

The Internship Program does more than offer gainful summer employment. The program prepares our students for success in the corporate world. With the help of the Guidance Department, BC High has sponsored career readiness programs on topics such as interviewing, finance, and entrepreneurship. Next year, the Internship Program will sponsor alumni panels focusing on industries such as robotics, technology, environmental consulting, and health care.

BC High’s Office for Institutional Advancement and Guidance department offered a career readiness program for members of the junior and senior classes. This program is part of the schools newly created BC Hire internship program which provides paid positions to current high school and young alumni in varying fields of interest.

Mike Keefe ’12 and Patty Corrigan P’16 a BC Career Counselor facilitated this interactive program during two lunch sessions. Some students were “interview ready” with their blue blazers, ties, dark pants and socks. Over the course of the 20 minute sessions many important topics were discussed such as interview etiquette, clothing choice, interview follow up, and the importance of having a one minute elevator pitch prepared. There were over 75 students who attended the sessions and many questions were asked about the interview process.

The Office for Institutional Advancement and Guidance departments hope to offer additional career focused programs next school year.

On June 11, 2015, Boston College High School and the University of MassachusettsBoston broke ground on Monan Park. The NCAA approved ballpark will be the home field for both UMass and BC High baseball teams, and will also enhance athletic opportunities for the community. The new fields will be an ideal venue for Boston’s Park League, America’s oldest amateur baseball league for men ages 19-25, as well as for the Yawkey Baseball League of Greater Boston, and Babe Ruth League baseball for boys ages 13 and up.

Anchored by a $2 million commitment from the Yawkey Foundation, this public, private partnership is named J. Donald Monan, SJ Park to honor his outstanding educational leadership, vision, and commitment to the City of Boston.

Fr. Monan was deeply honored as he spoke to the nearly 250 attendees about the project and what the new facility will do for the youth in the Columbia Point Area. UMass Boston Chancellor J. Keith Motley spoke about in his remarks, how sports can bring communities together, and he can’t wait to attend the first game.

“This project is truly remarkable and thank you to the Yawkey Foundation for not losing faith,” said BC High President Bill Kemeza. “It is with great pride that we name this park after Fr. Monan, showing our gratitude and respect for all that he has accomplished for the community of Boston.”

Jesuit education runs in the Miracky family. Bill attended two Jesuit high schools,

Marquette University High School in Milwaukee and Canisius High School in Buffalo, while Tammy graduated from the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. “We believe the quality of education we received from the Jesuits has been instrumental in launching our adult lives,” said the Mirackys. For Bill, that has meant training as an economist at Stanford and Massachusetts Institute for Technology and a career as a strategy consultant, advising public-sector clients for Monitor Deloitte. Tammy has been advising social entrepreneurs, and is now pursuing her Masters in Divinity at Harvard University.

The Jesuit ideals of finding God in all things and striving to become men and women for others are core values for Bill and Tammy. As members of the Jesuit parish of St. Ignatius in Chestnut Hill, they viewed BC High as supportive of their ideals and values for their boys, Matthew ’19, Lukas ’21, and Willie. “We were drawn to BC High by the education and critical thinking skills, the value system with the emphasis on social justice, and the school’s high standards for excellence and accountability,” said Bill. “Hopefully the boys won’t spend as much time in JUG as I did!” he laughed.

Bill and Tammy wanted more than just academic rigor when choosing their sons’ school and the idea of attending an urban school that draws from Greater Boston and beyond was important to the couple. “The independence and responsibility our sons gain by making their way to school from Newton on the Green Line of the T is something other schools can’t provide,” they said. In addition, they want their boys to experience the lifelong benefit from the relationships formed at BC High. Bill says he’s known first-hand the joys of lifelong friendships begun in the context of a Jesuit high school. “Of all that our boys will take away from BC High, these relationships might carry the most meaning down the road.”

The Mirackys started giving to The Fund for BC High the summer before Matthew started seventh grade.

When asked why they give, the answer was easy. “We are fully committed to the mission of the school and we want the benefits of Jesuit education to be available to families in need. Anything we can do to make the great BC High experience more accessible is money well spent in our view.”

This year, the Mirackys became members of the Companions’ Circle giving society. As parents of current students, they consider themselves important companions in the education process, and know that a multi-year commitment is a great benefit to BC High in executing its long-term strategic plan.

MAJOR GIFT

Improving Athletics

Ask an alumnus in the past twenty years and they’ll tell you that BC High is building a new

outdoor athletic complex. Until 2015, it was just a dream. With funding in place from a myriad of sources, a new baseball park and track are finally being built.

With a generous gift made by J. Frank Keohane ’53 in memory of his late brother, the Cornelius Keohane ’51 Track will allow BC High to host state track meets and will offer student-athletes a first class facility. The new track will feature eight full running lanes with a state-of-the-art urethane surface that covers the jumping areas as well as the track.

Additional fundraising efforts for the track project are underway from alumni, parents, and friends of the program.

Efforts to raise money for J. Donald Monan, SJ Park took on a more complex plan. A three pronged approach was set forth. First, seats are being sold in the stadium for $2,500 with the guarantee that donors will have their name attached to one of the largest building projects in the history of BC High. Alumni, parents, and friends of the baseball program rallied to raise nearly $250,000 with 175 seats sold so far. Second, corporations are being approached to have their logos printed on the “green monster.” As of June 1, together, Rockland Trust, McGee Toyota, Lambert’s Market, Primetime Sports, and WB Mason have pledged an additional $225,000 to the project.

The third stream of funding for the project has come from the opportunity to honor J. Donald Monan, SJ, whom the Yawkey Foundation chose to honor with the naming of the park. His unwavering support of education and the people of the city, makes raising money in his name a labor of love and a recognition for his life’s work. D

r. Alfred J. Andrea ’59, after graduating from BC High, earned his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Boston College and went on to earn a PhD from Cornell University. He has earned numerous awards, honors, and post-doctoral grants for his scholarship in the area of global and medieval history. He has had a distinguished academic career as a professor at the University of Vermont and has taught seminars to students of history across the country and across the world.

A prolific writer, he has written dozens of academic books, reference books, papers, monographs, textbooks, essays, articles, manuals and pamphlets. All of this success, according to Dr. Andrea, can be traced back to what he learned at Boston College High School.

What could be a better way to say thank you?

Sending an annual contribution to BC High and providing for a future gift from his estate “is a no-brainer” for Dr. Andrea. He described how his Jesuit mentors taught him and his classmates that we are each called to a life of service. Helping BC High continue its century and a half of service to the young men of Greater Boston, especially gifted young men who otherwise could not afford a Jesuit education, “is one small way in which I can partially fulfill the mission that Fathers O’Brien SJ, Pollard SJ, Sullivan SJ, Nelligan SJ, Mahoney SJ, and so many others (including the lay faculty) called us to.”

Beyond that, Dr. Andrea described “a personal debt that I must try to repay, although full repayment is probably beyond my modest means.” He went on to explain how he would not enjoy the most rewarding career in the world—being a professor of history—“were it not for the knowledge and skills that I acquired at BC High.” He indicated that the Latin, Greek, and German that he learned at BC High continue to be tools that he employs as a practicing medieval historian, but far more valuable than these skills is the art of critical thinking. “My Jesuit teachers—all of our Jesuit teachers— emphasized that we each have a God-given intellect, and it is our duty to use that intellect in the pursuit of truth and understanding,” Andrea said.

In his 48 years as a professor at the University of Vermont and elsewhere, he has tried, in a similar manner, to place critical thinking at the heart of every course that he has taught. In other words, he likes to think that he “carries a bit of BC High into every classroom here and abroad.” Dr. Andrea described his debt as being great and is exceeded only by his appreciation for what BC High has done for him and its thousands upon thousands of alumni. “Remembering BC High in my will helps, in a small way, to pass on the gift of a Jesuit education. What could be a better way to say ‘thank you’?”

BC High Benefit A Night to Remember

Thank you to the more than 550 parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of BC High that came together to not only enjoy one another’s company, but to support the students by raising more than $300,000.

Starting with an exclusive reception for new families hosted by Karylann and Bob Walsh ’59, chairman of the Board of Trustees, proved to be a great opportunity to get to know each other before the night kicked off. The main event started with a concert by the globe-trotting BC High Chamber Choir, who performed a medley of songs from trip to Spain.

One parent noted, “I can’t believe this is the gym, I was just here for basketball a few weeks ago. What a transformation!”

More than 400 alumni in classes ending in “5” and “0” returned to campus on April 11 for the annual Boston College High School High Grand Reunion.

The evening started with Mass and a welcome address from President Bill Kemeza in the Bulger Performing Arts Center. Alumni then headed into the Hunter-Fahey Commons to catch up with classmates.

The Office for Institutional Advancement is committed to keeping everyone connected. ATHLETICS A PERFECT SEASON FOR RUGBY

We had a great group of seniors who provided both leadership and talent. A solid crop of underclassmen gave us depth that allowed us to go undefeated even when we lost players to injury throughout the season. Most importantly, our team displayed fortitude and character both on and off the field. I am proud to have been a part of such a special team.”

Terry Cullen ’15 was named National Player of the Week by Goff Rugby Report, a national rugby website. Cullen will play rugby next year at the University of Massachusetts.

BC High rugby finished the season with a perfect 9-0 record, winning the state championship for the first time under the new playoff system. Captain James Kraunelis ’15 served as an excellent leader on and off the field throughout the season. The depth of the Eagles’ roster ensured the team’s success despite seasonending injuries to six key varsity players. BC High had a dominant first half of the season, which included a 41-0 victory over St. John’s Prep on the road during a snowstorm. The Eagles continued to excel, defeating the defending state champion, Belmont High School, for the first time in three years by a score of 20-7. Senior classman Billy Connors’ tactical kicking pinned the Marauders deep into their own territory setting up scoring opportunities for BC High. This win launched BC High into the national spotlight, cracking the top 50 and overtaking Belmont in the national rankings at #42. BC High completed its undefeated regular season with a 30-10 victory over Bishop Hendricken in an exhausting and physical game. Brian O’Neill ’16 stepped up and halted Bishop Hendricken’s late surge by making a try-saving tackle on the Hawk’s star prop near the goal line.

Following an undefeated regular season, the Eagles earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs. In the second, semi-final round, BC High defeated Xaverian 43-17 under the lights at home and earned a championship berth and rematch against Belmont.

In preparing for his players’ final match, Coach Carty stressed the importance of keeping the game plan simple, staying calm, and shaking off the inevitable tough breaks. His advice resonated with the Eagles, and despite falling behind 10-5 in the first half, they never lost focus. Eventually, BC High’s relentless pressure from the forwards wore down Belmont’s defense and opened up space out wide for the backs to attack. Terry Cullen ’15 finished the game with three tries, each by pounding the ball in from the goal line. After a successful BC High counter attack off of Belmont’s clearance kick, Joe Souza ’15 beat Belmont’s defense on the outside and scored, increasing BC High’s lead to 19-10. Billy Connors had three successful conversion kicks, scoring six points and adding extra insurance to the Eagle’s victory. BC High Rugby finished its undefeated season as state champions, ranked #36 in the nation, and with a point differential of 228-66.

The BC High lacrosse team had its best season in school history in 2015.

RECORD HOLDER IN TENNIS FOR UMASS BOSTON Charles Lai ’10 finished his collegiate tennis career as UMass Boston’s alltime wins leader (97 wins total), 8 time All-LEC selection (4 singles, 4 doubles honors) leader and earned three First Team All Conference honors in both singles and doubles. Charles was a member of the swimming and diving and tennis teams at BC High and was named a Catholic Conference All-Star, Team MVP, and Team Captain in 2010.

Congratulations to Charles. When asked to reflect on his recent accolades, Charles was quick to point out how others helped him along the way, “I am deeply humbled by these honors, and I really want to credit the BC High community as well as the coaches, especially Rev. Jim Hosie, SJ and Mr. Rogers in helping to lay the foundation of my success. I am always proud to be an Eagle!”

VARSITY SKIERS UNDEFEATED IN REGULAR SEASON The Varsity Ski Team completed a perfect, undefeated regular season winning the Peter Wall Memorial Race at Blue Hills. The team had seven racers qualify for the State Championships.

The following racers finished in the top 20 in the overall Ski East league standings and represented BC High in the State Tournament: Peter Sugar ’15 (1st), Brian O’Neill (3rd), Tom McMorrow (4th), Mike Mullaney (5th), Liam Quinn (6th), Kyle Hubner (16th), and Patrick O’Donnell (19th).

EAGLES IN POST SEASON PLAY BC High had several teams advance to the spring state tourney play this year.

Tennis won the Catholic Conference for the third year in a row and met Dartmouth in the first round of the D1 South tournament before losing to Brookline in the Semi-finals.

Lacrosse had their best season in school history with a 18-3 record under new head coach Steve Lydon. The Eagles made it to the semi-final round in the D1 South tournament, but came up short against the Duxbury Dragons.

Rev. Frederick McGowan ‘42 continues to be active in parish ministry during his “retirement” years. Fr. McGowan assists at several parishes on the north shore and enjoys an annual winter escape to Hawaii.

These projects also provide funds for constructing latrines for hygienic sanitation. Bill is a frequent visitor to Nicaragua where he closely monitors the programs sponsored by Rural Water Ventures.

Rev. Paul Curran ‘46 is “actively retired” and now lives at the Regina Cleri Residence for retired clergy in Boston’s West End. Gerald Donovan ‘47 lives up in Peabody where he enjoys staying active in academic and social affairs.

Jack Fahey ‘47 generously helped members of the BC High concert choir who were in need of proper dress shoes to wear during performances.

The choir is grateful to Jack for his support of their endeavors.

Newman Flanagan ‘47 and his wife Eileen enjoyed their winter in Florida, but are glad to be back in Massachusetts for the season where they can catch up on the lives of their grandchildren. Newman’s grandson, William, will be entering his junior year here at BC High in the fall.

John Hannan ’49 still loves his life out in the San Francisco Bay Area. He and his wife Charlotte live close to the University of California-Berkeley campus where they remain active in community and academic circles.

Bill Burke ‘52 and Ned Daly ‘69 lectured journalism graduate students at Boston University. Ned read from Homer’s Odyssey in Greek and Bill compared Homer to Vergil and read from the Aeneid.

The 50s Rev. Stephen Koen, II ’50 is enjoying his retirement in Falmouth. Fr. Koen remains actively involved in pastoral ministry, assisting at several Cape Cod parishes.

On a visit to Sarasota in March, John Mungovan ’58 enjoyed lunch at Marina Jacks with classmates Hugh Mahoney and Hugh O’Conner. Both Hughs are ensconced in the Venice area and are doing well.

Bob O’Brien ‘59 enjoys spending summers in northern Maine on his farm. He and his wife spend the colder months of the year in southern Maine, where he enjoys spending time with his grandchildren.

Ralph Catignani ‘52 and his wife Jean enjoy living in northern New Hampshire and spending time in Vermont during the summer. They are parishioners of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish in the North Conway area.

Father Gill was recognized for his lifetime commitment to social justice – as a professor and mentor at Boston College, a pastor in Roxbury, a leader of student liturgies and trips to Haiti, El Salvador, Mexico and Jamaica and chaplain to the Agape Community, a group in central Massachusetts focused on the Gospel message of non-violence. Reverend Robert Keane, SJ ‘65 gave the benediction for the 151st Commencement Exercises at BC High on May 17, 2015. Fr. Keane is the new Rector of the Jesuit Community at Boston College after recently retiring as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force.

Reverend Bob Deehan ‘71 made the most of a snow day this past February.

Fr. Bob is pastor of Holy Family Parish in Duxbury and he decided to join parish children in some sledding fun down a hill next to the parish office.

Reverend William Joy ‘64, currently pastor of St. Angela Parish in Mattapan and St. Matthew Parish in Dorchester, has been named by Cardinal Sean O’Malley as interim assistant Vicar for Administration and special assistant to the Vicar Genral for the Archdiocese of Boston. Father Joy will assume his new role on June 1, 2015.

Edward Conrad ‘65 is now living in Florida and enjoys connecting with his BC High era friends who have also relocated to the sunshine state.

Rev. Joseph Cosgrove ‘65 made it back to campus to concelebrate the 50th Reunion Mass. Fr. Cosgrove now lives in Maryland and is a priest for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Norman returned to BC High for his 50th Class reunion this past May and shared this reflection with the Alumni Office, “I want to express my sincerest thanks to you and the entire BC High team on the fabulous series of events you delivered over reunion weekend. The spirit of Boston College High School we left in 1965 was clearly evident in 2015.

Also, to my friends on the committee, it was an honor working with you. At the end of the day, I believe we delivered to our classmates and ourselves new and wonderful memories to join those we clearly all cherish from our past. Please all be well until we see each other again.”

Robert Leonard ‘71 has recently been appointed Director of Information Technology at the University of Nevada, Reno, School of Medicine. He brings to his new post years of experience in the field, including his service as chief information officer for Harvard Clinical Research Institute and as a senior consultant at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Reverend John Hanwell, SJ, ‘74 had a special job at this year’s graduation of presenting his nephew Will Doyle ‘15 with his diploma. Father Hanwell, the President of Fairfield Preparatory School, will assume his new duties as Socius of the recently formed Notheast Province of the Society of Jesus in early summer. The Socius is the second in command to the Provincial and would be the equivalent of the chief operating officer in a business model.

David McCourt ‘75 lives with his family in NJ. This proud dad just had a daughter graduate from Georgetown University.

Brian Reidy ‘77 after graduating Dartmouth and spending 20 years flying helicopters off aircraft carriers with the United States Navy, relocated to the Pacific Northwest after retiring from the Navy. Through a chance encounter with another alumnus he has reconnected with BC High. Brian, his wife Leslie and 12 year old triplets are happy and healthy in the northwest and coincidentally rooted for the Patriots in the superbowl.

Stephen Madden ‘82 recently published a book titled Embrace the Suck, a memoir about his athletic life, some of which takes place on the track at BC High. A couple of BC High coaches and faculty are thanked in the book, notably John Normant ‘64 and Bill Collins ’60.

World Gone By, the latest novel by Dennis Lehane ‘83, made its debut in March to rave reviews. The book is the final installment in the “Coughlin Trilogy” which includes The Given Day and Live

by Night. Dennis is recognized as one of America’s great crime writers.

Robert O’Connell ’83 was named for the fifth year in a row to the World Trademark Review’s “WTR 1000” listing of the world’s top trademark lawyers.

John McQuillan, Jr. ‘83 addressed the Class of 2015 at graduation this May. His message to the graduates was highlighted under four main points on how they might live their lives after high school. “Please remember to be grateful, be brave, be leaders, and above all reflect deeply upon the

Colonel Michael Port, USAF ‘86 has been appointed the Chief, Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Operations, Headquarters Air Force Global Strike Command, Barksdale Air Force Base, LA. He is presently the Director, Nuclear Inspections at the Air Force Inspection Agency. Prior to assuming his current post, he was the senior Air Force Fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Mike Sullivan ’86 has been named head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins hockey team. Mike has 13 years of coaching experience at the National Hockey League (NHL), American Hockey League (AHL) and international levels. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Mike also spent 11 years as an NHL player with four different clubs from 1991-2002, appearing in over 700 games.

Delaney credits his BC High and BC network in the smooth transition from major league baseball to the business world.

Patrick Downes ‘01 and wife Jessica Kensky continue to be featured in the news. Most recently, during the 2nd anniversary of the Marathon bombings, Patrick and Jessica advocated for increased accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Classmates from Boston College sought to honor the couple during Patrick’s 10th reunion and have launched the BC Strong Scholarship, which celebrates Patrick and Jessica’s tenacity in the face of adversity and is a financial aid scholarship awarded to a student who exemplifies the same characteristics as these two incredible individuals. The couple continues to use their resources and personal networks to lend support to others who have undergone amputations and experienced traumatic injuries. During the recent trial of Tsarnaev, Jessica was asked to testify and did so with grace, strength and warmth.

Captains and teammates Brendan O’Malley ’11 and Mike Marsters ’11 led the Fairfield University hockey team to Nationals this past winter.

Stonehill College junior Brian Hocking ’12 helped the baseball team with its run at the NCAA East Regional Tournament. The Skyhawks season came to a close with a loss to St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Mike Keefe ‘12 a current student at Boston College, recently came back to BC High to help facilitate a career readiness program for members of the junior and senior classes. After finishing last in the 2014 Ivy League Golf tournament, this year’s University of Pennsylvania team topped the field in a dramatic comeback, edging out Princeton by one stroke in a dramatic final. Playing no small role in the victory was Patrick O’Leary ‘12 who hit his last nine greens in regulation.

Classmates win $20,000 in Venture Capital Fund Doug Bent ’11, Matt Burke’11, Chris Castro’11, and Gaetan Daphnis ’11 recently won the Boston College Venture Competition (BCVC) for a Grand Prize of $20,000 for their submission of CoreHub, a commercial real estate tool. The start-up will connect buyers and sellers, tenants and brokers, using GPS and advanced search capability. Five finalists competed for a grand prize of $20,000 with quick pitches on marketability and the effectiveness of the product. The Class of 2011 had help from the BC High Class of 2015, Ahmed Fareed ’15, Emaad Ali ’15, Justin Montes ’15, and Niamke Giraud ’15 and their company Parallel.

Thomas Moynahan ’14 was honored with the Good Seed, Good Soil award by the Romero Center Ministries. The award is an opportunity to single out individuals that support the mission in extraordinary ways. Tommy attended the Urban Challenge with BC High in the summer of 2013. Upon Tommy’s graduation from BC High in 2014, he requested that in lieu of graduation gift please make a donation instead to the center. Tommy’s request totaled more than $1,500 in contributions.

James O’Donnell ‘14 was selected as the Forster award recipient for Colby College. Each year Colby selects one male and one female freshman to be recognized for their academic, community, and scholastic achiievements during the school year.

Faculty and Staff Notes BC High students on their exchange with the NorthPoint school. Fortunately, the BC High group had left Darjeeling and had headed for the Taj Mahal one day before the massive earthquake that hit Nepal.

TEACHERS ON THE RUN Arrupe Division teacher John Colavincenzo completed his third Boston Marathon.

Religious education teacher Joe Betz (above) ran the 119th Boston Marathon for The Martin Richard Foundation.

With the challenging winter training crossing the finish line was worth it for history teacher Eric Mendoza (above) who ran a personal best in this year’s Boston Marathon with a 2:34:14 time. “It was really great to see my BC High co-workers and students along the route cheering for me!”

English teacher Teresa Collins and her husband Patrick welcomed a new baby boy on March 28. John Patrick Collins was 19 inches long and weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces.

Dave Curtis recently joined BC High’s Office for Institutional Advancement as Assistant Director of Special Events and Stewardship after spending three years in the Advancement Office at Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, R.I. Dave is a graduate of Syracuse University and Providence College.

On Thursday, May 21, social studies teacher Carrie Dunne and her husband Padraig Carolan welcomed Isabella Margaret Carolan into their family. She is named for her two great-grandmothers, and was 20.5 inches and 7 lbs. 12 oz.

A new chapter has begun for Margaret Felice, Arrupe Division religion teacher and BC High liturgical music director. On Saturday, April 11, Meg exchanged marriage vows with Robert Goulston at Saint Ignatius Church at Boston College.

They had a liturgy of simple elegance and extraordinary music.

Reverend James O’Neil, SJ celebrated his 94th birthday in April with an icecream sundae and a round of “Happy Birthday” from the students after school.

Math teacher Anila Raxihme with retired French and Latin teacher Bob Peloquin recently visited with the legendary math teacher Mary

Madden. Mary recently moved to an assisted living facility that is close enough to BC High for visits from her family and friends.

Director of Financial Aid Owen TintiKane took over as Head Coach of the Varsity Ultimate Frisbee team this past Spring. Prior to coming to BC High, he was the head coach at Cheshire for six years guiding the program from club level to full varsity after one year.

Classics teacher Maureen Toner, her husband Michael, and daughter Lily welcomed Adam Patrick Ryan into the family on April 17. Adam tipped the scales at 9 pounds 3 ounces and was 21” long.

RETIRING FACULTY

History teacher Patricia Keenan-Byrne P’16, ’17 took over the role of faculty moderator for the National Honor Society. Some of her goals for the program include building upon the good work that has been done in recent years with high school tutoring, Arrupe Division tutoring, and creating and maintaining leadership roles within the Society.

As is tradition, BC High gathers on the last day of classes in the Hunter-Fahey Commons to bid farewell to the retiring members of the community. Tony Toto ’66 has spent the last 39 years teaching science to all levels. Tony’s love of woodworking will have him connected to the school through the Harkness tables that he is constructing in his wood shop. To read more about the tables visit p.17 Jan Yutzy has called BC High home for the last 36 years in the science department along with Tony. He is looking forward to spending more time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Ed Terrill began his time on Morrissey Boulevard when the Arrupe Division opened it’s doors. He has been a great asset to the students teaching computer science and technology.

Social studies teacher Seth Kirby has had an exciting second term as a visiting teacher at the Jesuit school of NorthPoint in DarJeeling, India. The teacher exchange program is a new benefit of the Hyde Center for Global Education. In April, Seth was able to assist campus minister Huy Huynh and physics teacher Sheila Fisher with the 11

Thomas F. Shields passed to eternal life on April 2. Tom Shields knew what it meant to be a “Man for Others” long before he sent his sons to BC High. His commitment to helping others was the model by which he lived. At BC High, he provided an opportunity for our brightest and most promising students to excel by establishing the Thomas and Mary Shields Merit Scholarship.

Tom believed “if you do good you will do well” and he will long be remembered for all the good he did in the BC High community and beyond. While not an alumnus himself, Tom, along with his wife

Mary, were proud parents of BC High students, he served on the Board of Trustees, and was so committed to the Jesuit ideals and mission of BC High that he became an example to countless others. In 2011, BC High inaugurated the Shields Medal in honor of members of the BC High community, though not alumni, for their service, dedication and generosity to BC High. The very first recipients of this high award were Tom and Mary Shields.

Please keep the entire Shields family, especially his sons Bill ‘78, Jack ‘79, and grandson John ‘06, in your thoughts and prayers during this time.

Shields Merit Scholar Reflection: Zachary Sogolow ’11 The Shields Merit Scholarship meant the world to my family and me.

Without the scholarship, I could not have attended BC High and enjoyed all the amazing opportunities the school offered me. I took eight Advanced Placement courses, finished with a 4.42 grade point average and scored a perfect 2400 on my SATs. There are many talented students at BC High, but I do think I had a unique shared experience with the other Shields Merit Scholars. That experience was meaningful and helped me to understand and gauge my role in the school. Being a Shields Merit Scholar, and knowing that I had managed to achieve that honor, really gave me the confidence to apply for a number of honors, awards and positions. When I

thought about college, the confidence instilled in me from being a Shields Merit Scholar motivated me to apply to the country’s top colleges and universities.

I had a wonderful experience at Harvard both in the classroom and in the greater school community. When I wasn’t in the classroom, I was the student manager for the men’s basketball program, assisting the team at several NCAA tournaments during my undergraduate years. To augment my academic classes I received a grant to assist research in a developmental psychology lab studying dreams of World War II prisoners of war.

Without the freedom the Shields Merit Scholarship gave me to explore my

interests at BC High, I never would have been at Harvard to benefit from these extraordinary opportunities. I am certain that my continued pursuit of excellence is directly connected to my experience as a Shields Merit Scholar.

This summer, I’ll start my professional career in a rotational program at the National Basketball Association’s headquarters in New York City. I hope to someday work in basketball operations, but I also want to return to school to attain an advanced degree in law, business or sports management. FROM OUR PAST COMES OUR FUTURE

This past school year, we began with a Liturgy celebrating on the very day that in 1864 the school opened its door for classes. It marked for us the closing of our year-long 150th Anniversary celebration. One could conclude that it was time to “get back to work” and we did.

But an important anniversary is also a time to “take stock:” To reflect on our history, our mission, to look at the present, to anticipate the future and then to act intentionally. This is to engage in what Jesuits call an examen, an exercise at the heart of their spirituality. It is also good stewardship of our beloved school and a way to ensure that it continues to flourish for the next 150 years.

So if we have spent a lot of time this year reflecting on our past, it is now time to look at the present and anticipate the future. What do we see?

Technology. There is no school or teacher today who has not experienced and made use of the enormous access to information available through the web. And yet, there is more. We see the potential for amazing changes in the way we set up classrooms, in texts, in how students learn, in the role of teachers; even in the purpose of homework. As you may have deduced from the articles in this edition of the magazine, we are exploring these facets.

We have learned that placing all of the required textbooks on a thin tablet (gone are the days of heavy book bags) was only the first step. These texts are now interactive. In science, students can change the parameters of a lab demonstration and see the results right in their “book”.

Teachers no longer have to be the dispensers of information but the coaches, tutors and mentors ready to help students analyze and understand the information that is literally at the students’ fingertips.

Teachers can concentrate, more than ever before, on the progress of each individual student assessing and helping them to develop the skills and levels of comprehension required for the successful completion of a course. This ability is changing the very nature of the classroom activities and homework. Our explorations of the Harkness method in the upper grade classes and team teaching in the Arrupe Division are manifestations of this new development.

Globalization. This startling phenomenon, linked to the technological advances, is transforming every aspect of human society and the natural environment with the potential for good and bad results. How to prepare young people is on the priority list of every educational leader.

Global programs have been cited in every conversation we have had about the future of BC High and, as many of you know, we are a leader in this area. This year over two hundred of our boys have taken part in our international trips: Living with families, attending Jesuit schools from Dublin to Darjeeling.

And yet there is more, we are developing whole new approaches in our curriculum, in our language courses, in our service projects, in cooperative video conferencing courses with other Jesuit schools around the world. Our boys will be confident in affirming the Jesuit phrase, The World is our Home.

Taking this opportunity to reflect on our work; to study the emerging innovative practices in education and to look closely at the community which we serve is the best way to honor our 150 year tradition of excellence. It is what we owe to the founders and sustainers of BC High.

It is our final tribute, at the end of this anniversary year, to ensure that this Jesuit outpost of education in Boston remains vital, connected, and strong.
