Dear Friends, As you read this, it is my deep hope that this magazine finds you in a better place than when you received our last issue one year ago. I pray that you are healthy, happy, and whole – though, tragically, I know this is not the case for everyone in our community.

At present, we find ourselves like the Apostles after Jesus’ miracle of calming the storm. We are grateful and amazed that the squall has seemingly subsided, but we still carry the fear and shock. Reflecting in our uniquely Ignatian way, we can see that this year has been an incredible story of triumph, trust, and love. Our return to campus in the fall was a leap of faith. We asked our students, parents and guardians, faculty and staff to trust in us and trust in each other. They did.

Treasuring every moment on campus, our young men showed outstanding adherence to CDC and DESE guidelines. Our faculty and staff pushed themselves to find new ways to adapt their material to an incredibly successful hybrid learning model. Our families and alumni provided the much-needed support, both moral and material, to help our school not only function during this difficult time, but to thrive.

The culmination to this incredible year came, unsurprisingly, in the commencement exercises for the Class of 2021. In a moving ceremony on the McCoy Practice Fields, we bid farewell to a group of Eagles who had fifteen months of their BC High experience forever changed by the pandemic. But, as I was proud to tell them on graduation day, they will always have a home here on Morrissey Boulevard. And we will always be grateful for their leadership in setting a culture of diligence and optimism for fellow students this year.

Those younger Eagles will inherent a new BC High in the fall, one that we pray more closely resembles our pre-pandemic life. But the lessons of this year will remain. And in this melding of our old normal with the new, it feels as though we are standing on the precipice of a frontier. Our young men will use what they have learned to shape the BC High experience of the future.

These students will welcome one of our largest and most impressive groups of incoming students in a decade, the Classes of 2025 and 2027, to campus in September. Together all of us, students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends, will chart a bold definition of Human Excellence in our Jesuit, Catholic context, supported by a Board of Trustees that is more dynamic and engaged than ever before. There could be no better time for this renewal than the Ignatian Year which we are now celebrating – marking the 500th anniversary of Saint Ignatius’s cannonball injury and conversion. This summer, BC High welcomed three eminently qualified members to the Board of Trustees: John Lydon ’03, Michael Ray ’86, and Jack Shields ’79, P’06. These outstanding alumni embody the spirit of energy and optimism made manifest by the most dynamic group of trustees in school history. Not only the most racially diverse ever assembled – this Board also represents a wide range of perspectives across age, location, gender, lay and religious life, and professional experience. Helmed by a former president of

Holy Cross, one of the nation’s most prestigious Jesuit institutions, Chair Rev. Michael McFarland, SJ, and a Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, Vice-chair The Honorable Serge Georges, Jr. ’88, the board’s leadership is amply matched by the qualifications of their fellow trustees. Among their number: a graphic designer, a cybersecurity pioneer, a former Senior Vice President at Sony Pictures, legal and financial experts, leaders of ministry, and titans of industry from healthcare to real estate.

But the most important perspective each trustee brings to the board is their connection to BC High – as alumni whose lives have been forever changed by our school, parents who have seen that transformation firsthand, and friends from the Jesuit Network and beyond who treasure the work that occurs within these walls. Because these men and women hold not only BC High’s physical assets in trust, our campus plant and endowment, but our metaphysical assets as well. Their most sacred duty is to safeguard the dreams and aspirations of every BC High student born and not yet born. The love of alumni who are with us, and those who have passed on. The gratitude of past parents, and the hopes of those who are still looking for the best possible place for their child to become a young man.

What our board shepherds is not even really an institution, but an idea. They uphold our faith in BC High, in its mission, in what this school is and has always been meant to be. Because what is faith if not the highest expression of trust?

Trust is a prominent theme in Ignatian spirituality. The Jesuit philosopher Teilhard de Chardin, SJ leads us in prayer to

“above all, trust in the slow work of God.” And in a piece of wisdom often attributed to Loyola himself, we are told to “act as if everything depended on [us] and trust as if everything depended on God.” That last piece is incredibly important because, informed by our Catholic identity, we know that faith cannot be passive, but must be put into action through good works. The trustees have enthusiastically rallied to this cause, quickly becoming involved in almost every facet of school life.

With COVID-19 driving needs greater than ever before, Stephen Fulton ’83, P’25, ’26, Deputy Director of Catholic Charities – Greater Boston, took an immediate interest in the service program. This past Thanksgiving, he helped our students pursue the magis by redoubling their efforts to our annual food drive that has helped to feed hundreds of families each year for two decades. Ifeanyi Obukwelu ’07, an investment professional at The Blackstone Group and eldest brother of the distinguished Obukwelu family, was a guest speaker at this year’s 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Service.

Asian Culture Club meetings – providing students with the guidance to renew the co-curricular’s mission with a new name, the Asian American Pacific Islander Collaborative (AAPIC). Kevin R. Powers, J.D. ’85 P’16, Founding Director of the M.S. in Cybersecurity Policy & Governance program at Boston College, has hosted students interested in the rapidly growing domain at BC’s Boston Conference on Cyber Security in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This year, Jack Shields invested $5,000,000 dollars to establish the Shields Innovation Center – aimed at prioritizing entrepreneurial thinking while preparing students for the rapidly evolving innovation economy.

These flashpoints are just a few of the ways in which trustees are involved directly in the lives of our students as leaders and mentors within the community. It would be impossible to count the hundreds of hours trustees spend shaping the future of the school alongside faculty and staff members on the Mission and Identity, Governance, Human Excellence, and Finance Committees.

But perhaps their single most important responsibility is steering and approving BC

High’s strategic plan. Last fall, under the direction of Fr. McFarland and President Grace Regan P’12, the Board of Trustees embarked on the process. Members of the President’s Cabinet have been hard at work and continue to engage more members of the community to fully articulate the needs for the future of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

The strategic plan’s goal is simple, and true to the school – to nurture and transform young men of diverse backgrounds

into exceptional, reflective, leaders of character, compassion, and spiritual and intellectual depth, committed to building a more just and inclusive world in the timeless Jesuit, Catholic tradition. To this end, the board is guided by three priorities: our mission, financial sustainability, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Throughout this process of laying out a master plan, the spirit of Saint Oscar Romero echoes clearly: “we are workers,

not master builders; ministers, not messiahs.

We are prophets of a future not our own.”

This Board of Trustees – leaders of, for, and from our community – are charting out a path toward BC High’s future. But the pursuit of excellence is a process, not a place. We are called to “plant the seeds that one day will grow.” And with the ingenuity, generosity, and fidelity of our alumni, parents, and friends we can put our faith into action to build a BC High beyond our wildest dreams.

Though the shape of that answer may have changed in the past century and a half, the undercurrent of intellectual excellence and moral leadership has not.

The Center for Ignatian Identity and Formation

hen the school was first founded in 1863, he likely would have been a priest, businessman, or academic clawing to be on equal footing with New England’s intelligentsia. And in the early 20th century, amidst the backdrop of two World Wars, patriotism became a pillar of a BC High education along with institutions across the country.

In the postwar boom of math and science that followed, Homeric excellence was the model toward which young men strived on Morrissey Boulevard. Like Odysseus, “the man skilled in all ways of

contending”, these students were as comfortable in a chemistry lab as they were in translating Latin and Greek.

The seventies brought broader social changes and cultural awakenings. And when Pedro Arrupe, SJ, delivered his now-famous “Men for Others” speech in 1973, it renewed the mission of Jesuit schools across the globe with a galvanized purpose to serve in solidarity with the marginalized and oppressed. Just a few short years later, the Graduate at Graduate would become the model upon which Jesuit students have shaped their devel-

opment for four decades working to be Open to Growth, Intellectually Competent, Religious, Loving, and Committed to Doing Justice.

So, who is the ideal graduate today?

He is a spiritual person, a leader, an innovator, a champion for equity, and a global citizen. And far from being empty descriptors, these archetypes outline a bold way forward for the school as it seeks to uniquely define Human Excellence in our Jesuit context. Each word represents a Center of Human Excellence at BC High, structured 11

programs and spaces on campus that will help students most fully grow into men of competence, conscience, compassion, and commitment.

The Lawrence H. Hyde ’42 Center for Global Education is a shining example of what the center model is expected to achieve. Established in 2012 as a result of Mr. Hyde’s incredible generosity, the Center for Global Education gave structure to the foreign exchange programs that had long existed at the school under different departments. Increased organization allowed students, faculty, and staff to approach these programs with greater

throughout the school in an authentic way. We understand the concept of ‘center’ in our context as more of a verb than a noun. While it may be a place where specific work originates, each center should be a place where the work goes out from into the community and where others are drawn into. They should be places of depth, where the work constantly ‘centers’ us in our deeper work and mission – where students find the strength to articulate ‘here’s who I am and here’s what I believe with

absolute clarity of heart.’”

And, juxtaposed with a collegiate model that embraces an abundance of centers for every interest, Lewis takes the meaning of the word to heart, “This is about purposefully centering ourselves on the points of difference that make us who we are.”

With the Hyde Center, the recently established Michael D. White '70 Center for Emerging Leaders and Jack Shields ’79, P’06 Center for Innovation, represent significant alumni investment of time, talent, and treasure in the future of BC High’s students as leaders in the world of tomorrow. With historic, multi-million-dollar gifts and passionate leadership, White and Shields have identified components of the BC High experience, leadership and innovation, that can and must be organized in a more intentional way. President Grace Cotter Regan P’12 said, “We are incredibly grateful to Jack and Mike for leading the charge in transforming our school to continue educating the finest leaders for our changing economy and world. Their Centers will form a new cornerstone of the BC High experience.”

And while for many years, students may have learned these skills by osmosis on the football field, in an economics class, or while serving in Syracuse – these Centers

intentionality – finding greater depth in the experiences. Expansion soon followed, with the Hyde Center eventually offering programs in 18 countries around the world, from Argentina to Zimbabwe.

Perhaps even more importantly, the Hyde Center grew to shape daily life at the school as Hyde Global Scholars and Peretti Scholars brought their unique perspectives as global citizens and advocates to classrooms, co-curriculars, and more.

This diffusion of perspective is something on which Principal Adam Lewis is keenly focused. “Our Centers need to be places where the work not only occurs, but where it originates and spreads

Leadership might now be learned in an intensive summer summit, and innovators will experience the firsthand thrill of a pitch competition, as they did in the inaugural Shields Innovation Challenge this past spring (for more on the Challenge, flip to page 26).

The benefits of each Center are not siloed, but spread throughout the school – for example, next year Mr. Steve Healy ’81 will be teaching the elective course “Entrepreneurship through an Ignatian Lens: Developing A Business Ethic Rooted in Jesuit Values” that instills the hard skills of business, but also asks reflective questions such as: “What does a business that aligns with Jesuit virtues look like? What best practices and habits are required to develop as a self-aware and socially centered entrepreneur?”

Alongside these Centers, the department of Campus Ministry, and the mission of equity and inclusion, long championed by Barbara O'Brien Miller P'91, '93, will be reorganized as the Center for Ignatian Identity and Formation and the Center for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Through this shift, both departments will be energized to more fully focus on their domains.

The Center for IIF will be empowered to devote more time to the depth of retreat and sacramental experiences, more prepa-

ration for liturgies, and offer expanded or additional formation opportunities for adult members of the community. Miscellaneous responsibilities that many young BC High graduates might associate with Campus Ministry, like the Senior Mentor program, will be reassigned to facilitate this focus.

The Center for DEI is a natural extension of BC High’s ongoing anti-racist work and commitment to building a community that respects and affirms diversity of race, ethnicity, national origin, physical ability, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. By expanding the mission of equity and inclusion, the school can spread this work throughout the community in a more encompassing way. Three faculty and staff members have been designated as DEI Practitioner Leaders: Lizzy Corsetti (faculty development), Katie McKiernan (curriculum and resources), and Terrell Diggs (student support). These leaders in their spheres of influence will enhance the work already being done by the Director of Equity and Inclusion, Ruth Evee P’18, ’22. They join several more faculty and staff members who will be trained as facilitators in the Courageous Conversation model in which BC High has been engaged this year and will continue next year.

This is no accident. As Principal Lewis notes, the “physical space must reflect our philosophical intention.” The shift toward Centers of Human Excellence is not just an academic distinction, but a manifestation of the desire to create and empower communities within communities. “These need to be places of reflection. Wherever these boys connect, whichever Center they feel drawn toward – and that may be more than one – they will have these moments, maybe just sitting around the table, that give them a unique perspective.”

Whether a student has learned to make the abstractions of Ignatian spirituality feel real and practical for his classmates, or to bring a particular lens of social justice in the margins, the type of leader Lewis imagines stepping forth from these Centers is a man of great depth. He has the “absolute clarity of heart” in not only his experiences and passions, but in the accompaniment of his peers. At the core of these five Centers of Human Excellence is the BC High experience in its truest form. They represent a recentering, and perhaps a true renaissance, of the BC High graduate as a “man skilled in all ways of contending” who is as comfortable in a board room as he is in ministry, as devoted an advocate for ecological innovation as he is for social justice, and who is prepared to bring these skills to bear on any continent in the world.

BC HIGH DURING COVID: Behind Every Challenge, an [ BY MORGAN SOUTTER P’24, ’26 ] Vice-Principal of Operations

If necessity is the mother of invention, then the COVID pandemic was a surely a mother to us all.

In the IT Department at BC High, problem-solving is an essential skill. And during the last 15 months, it seemed like the only skill that mattered. Consider, if you’re willing to reminisce, the unsettling spring of 2020, and the way remote learning began at our school: with two days of notice.

Two days.

In IT, we made a rapid assessment – every teacher had a computer; every student had either an iPad or a laptop; and Zoom software, while nascent, looked good – and immediately gave the official thumbs up. We could do it.

The faculty didn’t blink. Switch it on, they said. Zoom for all.

Though pleased with our success, we had no time to celebrate.

The next challenge arose at once, in the form of Zoombombing.

An act of idiocy on the order of vandalism in a public park, the practice of joining someone else’s meeting – and, after a few awkward seconds, swearing or displaying an offensive photograph – was worrisome and distracting. How to prevent such behavior?

“We changed the permissions on our meetings setups,” said Jennifer McLarnon, CIO at the school. “Two-factor authentication. That way, you couldn’t join one of our classes unless you were a student or teacher at BC High.”

Check. We had found a way to make things work more smoothly; and again, just as quickly, the stakes were raised.

Beginning in September of 2020, all grades would operate with a hybrid learning model: half the students at home, half at school, 14

switching each week. Which meant that in their current configuration, Zoom meetings weren’t good enough. In response, we became truly ambitious. The school found COVID-authorized grant funding, and we doubled down on videoconferencing by outfitting our classrooms with full-coverage, state-of-the-art Zoom Rooms. In each of these rooms you could find two huge screens, a hi-def camera at the back, microphones on the ceiling, and speakers in the corners.

Our faculty, rolling with the punches yet again, transformed themselves into IT mercenaries, experts by necessity. By turns miraculous and dizzying, the new technology made us all feel like students. After all, those online meetings really did offer some cool tricks: breakout rooms and in-class polling and instant-feedback quizzes, to name just a few. And as with every new tool, there were always more features to be found, creative ways to chart and develop this undiscovered country. When Mark Whitehouse, a math teacher at BC High for the last decade, was asked about the 2020-2021 Zoom Room setup, he grinned.

“I never worried about how it worked,” he said. “I was just glad it did. When there were hiccups, we tackled them together, the boys and I. Easy to say because the year is behind us, but it was only another puzzle to solve. Anyway, [nearly] everyone was back on-site for the last month and a half. It was a gift.”

Which is exactly how we felt in IT. Proud that we could rise to the challenge. Glad that we didn’t fully grasp, at the beginning, the technological scope of what we would face. And blessed, in the last six weeks, to be able to leave much of that technology behind, so that we could become, again and at last, a school filled with boys.

Soccer Star Anatoliy Berezyuk ’21 Battles Brain Cancer In an incredible story of courage, one of BC High’s seniors, Anatoliy Berezyuk ’21, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in December. Having immigrated to the United States from Ukraine when he was young, Anatoliy is no stranger to challenge. His tremendous force of spirit in the face of his diagnosis inspired our entire community. Friends and classmates sold shirts and supported a GoFundMe that has raised nearly $160,000 to date for his medical bills and expenses. The BC High family rallied spiritual and emotional support through prayer services and a choir concert filled with love and hope. And as he took the stage in triumph at commencement, there was not a single dry eye in the crowd.

Since 2015, BC High Soccer has partnered with the Ellie Fund to support breast cancer patients receiving treatment in Massachusetts. During that span, coaching staff and players have spearheaded fundraising efforts through word of mouth, social media, and the Mite Box collection to raise a total of $18,657.26. This fall alone, the program raised its highest single season donation – $5,589.

It addressed a critical need by supporting frontline workers who have been constantly scrubbing their hands in stressful hospitals throughout the pandemic.

BC High Soccer Continues Support for the Ellie Fund

of our Team Goals in 2015, we discussed assisting a non-profit as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

One of our player’s aunts was in recovery and forwarded me the information on the Ellie Fund. The captains and their parents had phenomenal ideas – including selling baked goods, coffee, and 50/50 raffle tickets at home games. In the beginning, the team only wore pink socks, but through Athletic Director Jon Bartlett ’87, we were able to add the pink jerseys. We are so thankful for all of the efforts from players and their parents, especially their moms, in making October at BC High a very special experience on and off the soccer field.”

BC High Athletics Receives National Attention BC High was once again recognized as having one of the top athletic programs in the country as #4 on Niche.com’s “2021 Best High Schools for Athletes in America” list. Conor, a former team captain at Harvard University, has worked tirelessly toward this goal and has had an impressive career. Now he is poised to represent the USA on the world’s biggest stage.

Thrilling OT Wins Over the Prep In a spring season unlike any other, both the football team and lacrosse team battled to incredible OT victories against rival St. John’s Prep. In March, with less than five minutes remaining, the Eagles found themselves down 14-9 – but left the field winners, 37-35, after a double overtime victory. Lacrosse took an important 8-7 OT victory from the Prep early in June as the two teams competed throughout the season for control of the Catholic Conference.

Jonathan Brillo ’99, named head football

coach in 2018, announced he was stepping down to spend more time with his family and on his full-time job after almost a decade and a half on the coaching staff. His time at the helm produced some impressive players who have gone on to play at the Division I, II, and III levels – a testament to the care and preparation of his staff.

After his tenure, the program is poised to continue in an exciting direction.

Also in the pipeline is Owen Keating ’21, who was invited to the US Junior National Team Camp this summer in Chula Vista, California. The goal of the camp is to select athletes to represent the United Stated in the World Rowing Junior Championship in Plodiv, Bulgaria August 11-15. As this year’s team captain, Owen is in the BC High top ten, all time, for his 2k and 6k and will be rowing at Cal Berkley this fall.

In his six years as head coach at Westwood, Coach Mantie won three League Titles and was twice named TVL Coach of the Year. At Framingham, he resurrected a program in just four years, winning the Bay State Title in his second year in 2018. We look forward to what he will accomplish on the Boulevard!

WITH FRESHMAN BASEBALL COACH DR. NICK ARGENTO

This spring, for the first time in 35 years, BC High had a different coach roaming the freshman baseball dugout. Don’t worry, he will still be in the classroom and on the soccer field this fall, but the legendary Dr. Nick Argento is stepping away from the diamond and handing the reins to Ron Fletcher ’87, P’26.

Q: When did you first start coaching Freshman Baseball at BC High?

A: I started in the spring of 1984 as a volunteer assistant with Mike Track & Field finished 5 out of 32 schools in D1 States on their way to All States, where Ben Evee ’22 placed 2nd overall and set a new school record with long jump of 22' 10", the 4x400 (Darjee, Crowley, Melo, Duggan) ran a 4th in MA 3:25, and Owen Duggan ’21 posted 1:57 in the 800m!

The Varsity Baseball Team had a strong run in the playoffs before falling to Franklin, 2-1, in the D1 South Semi-Finals.

Varsity Lacrosse fought hard but fell to St. John’s Prep 11-7 in the D1 State Championship.

Q: Why was it so important for you to coach Freshman

Baseball all these years, and not move up to a higher level?

A: After three years, Norm and I talked about moving up to coach JV. But because freshman year is so important to students’ formation, I thought it might be better for the program to have consistency. A lot happens to a freshman in the spring as they begin to transition to sophomore year – remember with teenagers, each month is like a dog year!

Q: Have you seen the sport of baseball change over your tenure?

A: The game has evolved with practice today including questions about launch angles, pitcher pliability, fielders’ strength, and player acumen.

There’s excessive emphasis on the development of the individual player

at the expense of the player’s understanding of team play. Baseball showcases don’t care about the longterm development of the player.

There’s a misconception that baseball is an individual sport. But so many times, I have watched players in the bottom of a lineup produce that winning hit or, smartly, take that extra base. What has not changed is that baseball, like most sports, develops and reveals character. How players respond under pressure provides an opportunity for the coach to engage them in reflection – this provides life lessons that can prove very useful off the field too.

Q: What were some of the ways you were you able to adapt over time as a coach?

A: Our coaching staff loves to study the game of baseball and adapt

it to the skills of our players along with the universal BC High expectations of hard work, commitment, fidelity to the team, humility, and supporting one another. We attend many coaching clinics, both locally and even nationally, that help us gain new practice approaches and player development ideas. I read about the late, great UCLA Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and decided to adopt it

Q: After coaching so many talented baseball players at

BC High, could you tell right away if a freshman had the potential to play college baseball?

A: Not always. Freshmen change physically and mentally during

a season. For some players, practicing and playing six days per week can be invigorating. For others, it can become grueling. Some players fell in love with the details of the game, the monotony of practice, and the commitment to play – while others discovered that it was not for them.

which always reminded me that all coaches at BC High have an important role in the formation of these young adults.

In fact, the most important comments I have heard are actually from alumni I cut. One time I had an alumnus introduce me to his wife at his 10-year reunion: “This is Mr. Argento. I had him as a teacher in economics class and he cut me from Freshman Baseball!” His comment illustrated the impact athletic cuts have upon a person. It led me to conduct cuts in-person. While the conversations could be difficult, I decided it was important for the dignity of the player and might someday serve as a model if he had to deliver bad news to an employee.”

Q: What will you miss most when you are not on the baseball field this spring?

Q: When baseball alumni return to campus, what memories of playing for you do they share?

A: When I was a young coach, Fr. Frank Belcher, SJ once told the players that they would never remember the record of the team or the scores of games. Rather, they would remember the friendships made, and the humorous or unique things we experienced. He was so right. Alumni tell me about visiting Fordham Prep, touring Yankee Stadium, team masses, or a post-season celebratory trip to minor league games. They express a brotherly love for former teammates,

A: Working with so many gifted players has been a blessing. Any

BC High coach knows that. I will miss the challenge of taking an amorphous group and building a team. A freshmen baseball season is broken into four parts: the tryouts, team formation, mid-season struggle, and a strong finish. The latter part of the season is the most rewarding because you get to see the change and growth. I have been blessed to have coached with some patient and talented assistant coaches: Mike Normant ’03, Greg Smith ’02, Tim Westfield ’02, Anthony D’Amato ’10, and Steve Lynch ’76.

Tom Johnson ’52, Ed.D. recently completed a book series which he has coined the “Trilogy of Hope.” It details authentic personal applications of how writing poetry helped Tom cope with high pressure, life-changing events. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tom found that writing poetry while in the isolation of quarantine was beautifully therapeutic.

St. Mary's Church of Foxborough, MA selected Thomas J. Cunnally ’53 as the Veterans Affairs Coordinator working with the Foxborough Veterans Representative to honor those who have served our country.

Third graders at St. Mary's recently sent a “Thank You for Your Service” card to all of the town’s WWII Veterans, and the parish honored the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War on June 25, 1950.

On May 23, 2020, Rev. John Kiley ’62 celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.

Kiley is now a senior priest in residence at Our Lady of Hope Parish in Ipswich, MA. As a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army’s 93rd Military Police Battalion, Brian Sullivan ’63 never fought in the jungles of Vietnam, but for a period of nine months he experienced the hell of what war can bring. His personal war zone was the back alleys and streets of the city of Qui Nhon, a supply port that served as a haven for drug dealers, black marketers, deserters and corrupt officials. His story was recently featured in The Falmouth Enterprise. Thank you for your service to our country, Brian!

Home entertainment industry veteran and BC High Trustee Fritz Friedman ’68 was been named one of the 75 most influential FilipinoAmericans for 2020. Friedman, who for more than three decades ran publicity at what ultimately became Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, came in at No. 3 on the list. He is joined on the list by such luminaries as four-time Emmy Award winner Lisa Lew (No. 5), Grammy Award winner Bruno Mars (No. 8), and Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfield. Friedman currently serves as president of The Fritz Friedman Company, a Los Angeles and San Diego-based production and strategic marketing communications company. Among his past and current clients are Dean Devlin / Electric Entertainment (Independence Day: Resurgence); Invoke, a Boston-based market research technology firm; big data company Parrot Analytics; and Sony Pictures Entertainment, where he worked with the worldwide chief diversity officer in the area of diversity and inclusion and targeted marketing.

Ed Dunn ’71 retired in 2018 after a long career as an educator, principal, and curriculum developer. He now serves as a consultant and enjoys time with his five children and ten grandchildren.

In 2013, Bob Green ’71 was promoted to Assistant Chief of the Honolulu Police Department. He was a 20-year veteran of the force and a Major in the Patrol Division.

John F. Dennis Donoghue ’73 retired as a Massachusetts public school teacher in 2014. His memoir, The Final One Eighty was published by Adelaide Books in May 2020. The book is a day-to-day account of his last year of teaching sixth grade, highlighting conflicts, frustrations, and successes with humor and introspection from someone who'd been at it for 37 years.

To date, BC High's generosity has provided nets to over 3,000 children worldwide and is part of a much larger effort to prevent, detect, and treat malaria.

The program featured a keynote address from fellow Eagle, Joe Dunford ’73, retired Marine Corps General and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Actor Mark Wahlberg and NHL player Brian Boyle also made special appearances.

Griffin ’87 USMC (Ret.) was featured in the October issue of Leatherneck, the official Magazine of the Marines. “It might be cliché, but I always find that in serving, what I receive in return is immeasurable. So much so, at times it feels like serving is a selfish act because I know I’ll earn more from those I have the honor and opportunity to help.” Griffin a Bronze Star recipient said he was first motivated by the power of volunteerism through his experience as a student here on Morrissey Boulevard.

alumni NEWS & NOTES Joby Norton ’87, owner of the popular Mullaney’s Harborside Fish Market, is putting the finishing touches on a new seafood processing plant in Scituate Harbor. His plan is to have fish caught by local fishermen processed and sold within a few miles of Scituate town pier, cutting down on both the cost of fresh fish and the fees local seamen often pay to have their catch processed and shipped.

Brian Casey ’91 was named Science Department Chair at Swampscott High School where he teaches Chemistry and Meteorology. Last spring Casey was one of the first three teachers to be certified by the American Meteorological Society as a Certified AMS Teacher.

With the guidance and support of our Asian American trustees Fritz Friedman ’68 and Brian Lee ’02, the Asian Culture Club has voted to change their club name to Asian American Pacific Islander Collective.

The club announced the change in May and had a special guest, State Representative Tackey Chan ’91, to share a bit of his experience at BC High and as a man for others in giving voice to those who are often overlooked.

A Dream Deferred No Longer: Pat Glennon ’90 submitted the final assignment of his Bridgewater State University bachelor’s degree – 30 years after he first took a college class. “It was so exciting,” he said of the culmination of so much hard work. “Bridgewater gave me the ability to right what I felt was always a wrong.” Glennon attended Saint Anselm College after high school, but says he wasn’t ready for the work and responsibility. So, he left and took courses at various institutions over the ensuing years.

Education took a back seat after getting married, having four children, and starting a career working for financial companies.

Then, eight years ago, with his kids older and needing less supervision, his wife encouraged him to return to the classroom. “It was something I wanted to make sure I did for myself.” Congrats, Pat!

Jared Wahlgren ’99 recently celebrated one year with McKesson Corporation. He works in their Medical-Surgical division on Equipment Management. Prior to McKesson, Wahlgren has held positions in Equipment Management with the American Red Cross.

Boston Insurance Brokerage LLC has announced the appointment of Keith Driscoll ’93 as their CEO. Keith has been member of the Boston Insurance Brokerage team since 2013, beginning as Vice President of the Workers Compensation Division before being promoted to Executive Vice President/Chief Operation Officer in September of 2017. Driscoll brings with a wealth of experience to the new position from within and outside the insurance industry.

In November, Chas Dorman ’99 was named Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications at Princeton University working primarily with the men’s ice hockey team and leading overall communications strategy for Princeton Athletics. This past spring, Chas received the “Rising Star Award” from the Collegiate Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).

Morgan Stanley announced that Stephen Cahill ’01, a private wealth advisor in its Wealth Management office in Boston, has been named to the Firm’s Pacesetter’s Club, a global recognition program for Financial Advisors who, early in their career, have demonstrated the highest professional standards and first- class client service.

Stephen currently lives on the South Shore with his wife, Jessica and daughter, Lilah.

Bryan Parent ’01 landed a position with LinkedIn as a Senior Protective Intelligence Analyst after completing a Penn State’s master’s degree in homeland security with a geospatial intelligence option.

Parent likens his job to that of members of the U.S. Secret Service; he conducts threat assessments to protect high-visibility individuals, both to protect those individuals and protect the company. Bryan also served 8 years in the U.S. Army and National Guard before going back for his master's at Penn State.

The Shields Center for Innovation

n October, Jack Shields ’79, P’06 made BC High history with a $5 million dollar gift – the largest ever single innovation investment on Morrissey Boulevard.

His gift ignited a wave of energy on campus, and with it, the Shields Innovation Center.

Jack’s vision, one that he has shared and shaped with President Grace Cotter Regan P’12 and Vice President for Advancement Kelly DeGregorio, is to prepare students for the rapidly evolving innovation economy while prioritizing and encouraging entrepreneurial thinking in BC High’s next generation of leaders.

Shields is no stranger to innovation.

In his 30 years as a national leader in healthcare entrepreneurship, he has overseen the creation of four highly successful companies in the fields of dialysis, oncology, radiology and pharmacy. Each company was founded with care and service at its core, providing better access to more affordable healthcare for all people. Shields Health Solutions, founded in 2012, is one of the fastest growing private companies in America.

Jack is one of the most distinguished entrepreneurs to have ever walked the

halls of BC High, but as he is quick to point out, “The BC High of today isn’t the one I attended in the 1970s. It’s stronger, more flexible, and more diverse. I’m looking forward to helping my alma mater carry on the Jesuit tradition of building community and educational foundation inside and outside the classroom. I’m reminded of what Jonas Salk, who brought us one of the first successful polio vaccines, once said: ‘Intuition will tell the thinking mind where to look next.’ That’s what this Center is all about.”

Shields’s allusion to the vaccine pioneer Jonas Salk is all-too fitting at a time when the need for medical, technical, and equitable innovation is greater than ever before.

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed new stressors on the economy and society that require bold leaders and solutions.

This need was examined in February’s inaugural Shields Innovation Center Panel, “Why Innovation Matters in BC High and Beyond.” After opening remarks from Governor Charlie Baker, President Regan moderated the dynamic discussion

The Shields Center for Innovation will have three distinct components:

In the follow-up virtual speaking event, “Creating the Next Generation of Innovators”, former Governor Jane Swift, now President and Executive Director of LearnLaunch, moderated a conversation on the future of entrepreneurship featuring representatives from some of Greater Boston’s most distinguished institutions of higher learning: Jere Doyle, Popolo Family Executive Director, Edmund H. Shea, Jr. Center for Entrepreneurship at the Boston College Carroll School of Management, Raj Echambadi, Ph.D., the Dunton Family Dean of the D'AmoreMcKim School of Business at Northeastern University, Babson College President Stephen Spinelli Jr., and Matt Segneri, Bruce and Bridgitt Evans Executive Director at Harvard Innovation Labs.

After these two successful engagements drew together hundreds of people throughout the BC High community,

the first Shields Challenge was launched inspiring students to propose solutions to problems facing residents in the City of Boston. More than thirty proposals were submitted, and each team received mentorship from BC High alumni, parents, and friends. Swift, Echambadi, Spinelli, and Don Gummow ’13, Innovation & Operations Analyst at Brigham & Women's iHub Open Innovation Studio, served as judges for the challenge. They were remarkably impressed with the students’ presentations, deep understanding of their projects, and most importantly, their embrace of the “fail fast and iterate” mentality that governs the work of innovation.

The award for the best Arrupe Division submission went to Elite by Brandon Miranda ’26, Anthony Edwards ’26, and Hank Shertenlieb ’26, who sought to address healthy food options and help lower the obesity rate in Boston neighborhoods. The Faculty Honorable Mention was awarded to Queering Schools: How Introducing LGBTQ+ Curriculum Will Help Form a More Accepting School

The Healthy Food Initiative by Yasin Khan ’22, John Forry ’22, Ricky Robinson ’22, and Charlie Reitz ’22 received $500 each. Their project sought to partner with an organization to run a farmer’s market distributing leftover fresh and healthy foods from restaurants, hospitals, grocery stores and more to the local Dorchester community, particularly poor and underserved neighborhoods.

The winner of the inaugural Shields Innovation Challenge was Vert by Matthew Hurley ’23, Tyler Kwong ’23, Marvin Le ’23, and Nico Bezzerides ’23, who each received $1000. Through vertical hydroponics, these Eagles seek to grow nutrient rich foods to provide healthy options for impoverished people.

This first challenge and its many incredible submissions would not have been possible without the help of faculty leaders James Hutchison, Margaret Scanlon, Katie McKiernan, and Colleen O’Hara, who enthusiastically created the framework for a program that we are excited to continue next year. And next year, the Shields Center will be operating at full steam, creating even more excitement among our

community than it had this spring. It will serve as a vanguard for the ways in which the Centers for Human Excellence will begin to transform the BC High experience. Leading that charge will be the newly appointed Director of the Shields Center for Innovation, Joseph McNamara ’12.

Selected from an outstanding pool of candidates, Joe is currently the Manager of Innovation & Growth at the Babson Youth Impact Lab. We are eager for him to bring his skills back home to the Boulevard where he will help to shape the next generation of Eagle innovators!

50th The Classes of 1970 and 1971 returned to the Boulevard in May for their Golden Jubilee celebration. In a 50th Reunion unlike any other, these classes were able to reminisce and reflect with each other after the Class of 1970’s festivities were delayed due to COVID-19. On Friday evening, they enjoyed Mass celebrated by Fr. Don MacMillan, SJ ’60, concelebrated

by Fr. Patrick Nolan, SJ and Fr. Bob Deehan ’71, and assisted

by Deacon Charlie Ferraro ’71. Both classes retired to dinner, the Class of 1970 in Cadigan Hall and the Class of 1971 in the Hajjar Dining Hall – quite a different experience than the McElroy basement lunchroom they remembered!

Mike White ’70 addressed his class, and Dan Kenslea ’71 addressed his fellow alumni, where he was honored with the J. Barry Driscoll ’48 Award for his incredible work as a volunteer, Class Agent, Trustee, coach, and hard work as the Director of individual Gifts & Estate Planning in the Advancement Office – a position from which he retired this summer.

Although both classes were not able to attend commencement in full as they have in years past, a few alumni including BC High legends Mike McGonagle ’70 and John Lynch ’70 represented each class in giving a blessing to the Class of 2021.

Dan Russo, Arrupe Division – Latin, and his band, Three At Home, released their first full-length recording, entitled “playlist #notarecord” this January – they’ve been nominated for a New England Music Award and have already won a few songwriting contests!

The music is available now on all streaming services and will be available on vinyl in the Fall 2021.

Dr. Marina Rozenberg created a new Arrupe Division course called You and the Music History of United States that includes three projects. The first project asks the student to consider, “Who am I, and what are my music preferences? What is the soundtrack to my life?” The second project encompasses research on the life, history, culture, language, poetry, crafts, and music of America’s indigenous peoples. Equipped with their research, students learned music fundamentals, wrote an original chant, and built a drum. The final project is based on the history of the Underground Railroad and its hidden spiritual messages.

Students learned African American spiritual music, wrote their own song, and produced a documentary. All students presented their work throughout the school year!

Nelson Miranda ’92, P’16, ’18, was appointed the Board of the Jesuit Schools Network. In his work with JSN Board members they will “promote educational ministry of the Society of Jesus in service to the Catholic Church by strengthening the Jesuit schools for the mission of Jesus Christ.

hitchhike to South Boston to attend, he believed Jesuit education molded his future endeavors. After graduating from Boston College in 1954, Mr. McNeice joined the United States Army, was stationed in Germany, and met his beloved wife Margarete.

They would be happily married for sixty-one years before she passed away in 2017.

First and foremost, faith was the center of John’s life. For many years, he was a daily communicant at St. Gerard Majella Church, and he credited the Society of Jesus for his lifelong, strong Catholic faith and business success. John built the Colonial Group, Inc. into one of the nation's leading investment management companies before selling it in 1994 to Liberty Financial. As a man for others, he and Margarete were leading philanthropists in the Boston area, supporting Catholic education, healthcare, and so much more.

John A. McNeice, Jr. ’50, GP ’13, St. Ignatius Award recipient, former Trustee, and lifetime benefactor of BC High passed to eternal life at home in Canton this past April.

A noted philanthropist and retired CEO and Chairman of the Colonial Group, John began his high school education at North Quincy High School but transferred to BC High, a move he said changed his life. Despite having to caddy to afford tuition and

President Grace Cotter Regan P’12 said, “So many moments in the BC High experience occur within those walls, from convocations to graduations, dances to athletic contests and everything in between. It is indeed fitting that the lasting legacy of Mr. McNeice will be centered in a place on campus where we are most fully ourselves – learning, competing, celebrating, and growing through all that life has to offer.”

JIM McINNIS ’53 Jim McInnis was a proud member of the great Class of 1953. He helped support countless students through the O’Brien Foundation each year. His generosity and kind spirit were instrumental in being named a St. Ignatius Award recipient in 2017. His family shared an excerpt from a prayer titled ‘Papa’s Prayer’: “Before I go to bed, I’ll ask myself, what did I do to show my love for God? Was I loving at home? Did I obey my parents? Was I kind to my brothers and sisters? Did I hurt anyone by telling lies or by stealing? Then I will speak to God, our Father: For all your gifts, I thank you. Forgive my faults, I pray. Help me to be like Jesus in all I think and do and say. Lord, have mercy on me and hear my prayer.”
