Dear Friends, When I began this column two years ago as part of the relaunch of BC High magazine, I could not have imagined the challenges this community, and indeed our national and global community, would face over these past months. Through the course of this magazine issue’s development, I have written and re-written this letter to you too many times to count.

I wrote about remote learning and our academic response to the COVID-19 crisis. I wrote about the ways in which our community continued to thrive despite being apart, from the Eagle Virtual 5K to the beloved Livestream masses we shared with the Jesuit Community. More recently, I wrote and prayed about the tragic deaths of those whose lives were prematurely ended by acts of racial and police violence like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others. These senseless incidents have rightfully unleashed a wave of social change across our country and in our very own community. BC High is assessing its culture and entering a year with intentionality, dialogue and discourse on race, equity, inclusiveness, implicit bias and social justice. BC High is committed to Black Lives Matter and we view the @BlackatBCHIGH Instagram account and followers as a catalyst that has furthered conversations specific to experiences within the BC High community.

None of the letters I have drafted could individually encompass the breadth of the challenges we have faced.

And together, there is simply too much to say. So, as I sit to write this letter to you for what I hope to be the final time, I want to turn our eyes toward tomorrow.

The challenges and complexities we have faced in these past few months will remain with us in the future.

We have had, and will continue to have, many difficult conversations that I know will help us grow and become a better, more just school. We will continue to be a leader in education in these uncertain times through a nearly $1 million-dollar investment in classroom infrastructure to support our hybrid Connected Learning model.

The hardship and uncertainty we have faced makes it more important than ever to look for hope. And hope is exactly what I felt on the Feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola as we gathered with the Class of 2020 for an in-person graduation that once seemed impossible. Just a few weeks after that powerful day, we hosted and sponsored the 2nd National Anti-Racism Teach-in along with its inaugural Teen Experience – an incredible beacon of hope for our students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni. At BC High, our Jesuit, Catholic community is prepared to meet the challenges and blessings of this upcoming school year with grace, humility and determination.

ervice to the City of Boston is built into the very foundation of the BC High experience.

Though charitable clubs had been popular since the time of the school’s founding, a formalized program did not come into being until the spring of 1972 as the Field Education Program under the direction of Jesuit scholastics. That year, eighty students worked at least 25 hours a week during the fourth quarter of their senior year in hospitals, elementary schools, government offices, and political campaigns.

As the decade wore on, Rev. Richard Gross, SJ, would shift the program’s philosophy toward strictly service organizations – seeking personal development of the student and not possible career development. Fr. Gross would eventually propose that this voluntary program be made a requirement, transforming into the Community Service Program of the past several decades.

Today, BC High’s Office of Service and Justice Initiatives, led by Amanda Adamczyk P’21 and Rev. Ron Perry, SJ, offers a guided and transformative program of community service over a student’s four or six years on Morrissey Boulevard. Rather than simply tracking hours, these experiences emphasize authentic and reflective solidarity with those on the margins.

Beginning in the Arrupe Division, students experience service days with their advisory groups. Grade 7 travels to local parks, beaches and non-profit organizations to learn stewardship of the Earth while Grade 8 visits nearby assisted living facilities, nursing homes and rehabilitation hospitals to engage with the residents and patients performing the ministry of presence.

of their BC High experience. They also perform ten hours of service for an organization to which they already belong in their home community and begin to reflect.

Sophomores and juniors learn to act as men for and with others through service at nearly one hundred local community non-profit organizations from various Boys and Girls Clubs to Veterans Affairs Hospitals. Through dozens of hours of service, students also participate in reflection groups

work with different service partners, advocates for economic and racial justice, and State Legislators. Participants ask themselves, “Who is my neighbor?” – the same question asked of Jesus in the Gospels – as they visit, listen to, learn from, and advocate with and for people in the neighborhoods of Boston experiencing poverty.

Through its service programs, BC High seeks not only to serve our local community but to educate young men by exposing them to unfamiliar situations and demonstrating how to live justly. As students leave their comfort zones, they come to see all people as brothers and sisters.

They are confronted with injustice and come to know the individuals, families and communities that are directly affected.

The relationships they form lead to a more profound understanding of the meaning of discipleship.

By senior year, there is no formal requirement or expectation of hours, but many of the young men nearing the end of their transformation into Graduates at Graduation choose to continue the service that has been so central to their BC High experience. And in the past decade, there has never been greater co-curricular focus or intensity toward service. Almost every-

One of the most formative initiatives is the Local Service Immersion where students spend February vacation lodging at BC High and venturing out each day to

From the yearly Eagle Christian Athlete charity rake-a-thon, to the thousands raised for the Ellie Fund by BC High

Athletics teams each year, to the perpetual efforts of the Green Eagles to raise awareness and effect change for recycling, conservation, and gardening within BC High and beyond.

One of the most prolific co-curriculars devoted to service is the St. Louis Project, in which students and adults serve those struggling with homelessness, poverty and hunger in our Boston community. Every Thursday, these Eagles and adult volunteers meet after school and prepare meals to share as well as socks, hats, gloves and other necessities. At Downtown Crossing students practice the ministry of presence by entering conversations with these men and women, building meaningful relationships with them, and affirming their shared dignity and the value of community.

In the St. Louis Project, the threads of BC High’s devoted history to service – and its future – are beautifully entwined. One of the Project’s cofounders, David Coletti ’13, is the grandson of dearly departed alumnus and devoted advocate Bob Walsh ’59, GP’13 who helped to establish the Pine Street Inn. A full obituary for Walsh can be found in our In Memoriam section beginning on page 32 alongside fellow titans including Joseph Corcoran '53, P’80, ’82, ’90, GP’11, ’14, ’17, ’19, whose work in the field of affordable housing has benefited thousands in Boston and throughout the country.

As these alumni begin to pass their torches after lifetimes of service to the Greater Boston community, the younger generation of Eagles is passionate to carry on that legacy. Just as Walsh’s spirit lives on in the hundreds of students who have and will continue to volunteer at Pine Street Inn over the years – the St. Louis Project has inspired several other service-oriented co-curriculars.

The Lazarus Ministry is a partnership with St. Anthony’s Shrine to serve those who die with no one to care for their burial needs. Juniors and seniors serve as pallbearers at these funeral services and bear witness to the dignity that the deceased have as human beings. The Mother Teresa Project is a new accompaniment program started by Campus Ministry this year to 5

develop friendships with intellectually impaired students at the Towards Independent Living and Learning (TILL) Program.

Eagles travel to the center in Charlestown each week to make crafts, do activities, and befriend TILL afterschool participants ages 12-21. In January, more than a hundred students in AP U.S. History classes signed up to partner with St. Mark’s Parish on their Community Education Program (CEP). CEP offers 12-week semester citizenship classes every Saturday morning at Boston Public Library to immigrants living in Dorchester. These initiatives are the result of BC High’s constant efforts to bring students to the margins, building kinship and challenging preconceived worldviews.

And as a longstanding community hub in Dorchester, BC High’s commitment to our neighbors has only increased amid the COVID-19 crisis. Every year our campus is host to church services, fundraisers, and summer programs for local residents. But in May, the parking lot outside McNeice Pavilion, normally full of cars belonging to our students and faculty, transformed into something else entirely. Orange cones and staging tents, and gigantic milk trucks filled the pavement as BC High partnered

with State Representative Shawn Dooley P’24, ‘26, Dairy Farmers of America, Vanguard Renewables and HP Hood LLC in the Farmers Feeding Families to distribute 8,600 gallons of milk to our brothers and sisters in Boston.

The challenges ahead are uncertain, unforeseen, and unprecedented. But the BC High community stands ready to serve as it does in all things ad maiorem Dei gloriam.

Steve Hughes ’73, P’98 grew up near BC High for most of his life, and finally attended with his six brothers in 1969. As a student, he worked in the BC High kitchen and played football for Coach Jim Cotter ’55. He met hundreds of Jesuits during his service in the kitchen, and he formed countless friendships with fellow student volunteers. Little did he know that service – a small aspect of his life – would transform into his life’s mission.

It began when Father Tom Gibbons offered him a position teaching history at BC High, an opportunity that would shape the next twenty-two years. He fondly remembers the joy of seeing students make a discovery or make well-natured jokes each period. However, he became concerned with intelligent individuals who struggled in class. To understand and implement better teaching techniques to accommodate such students, he started learning about school leadership at Boston College. After completing many courses there, he got a unique opportunity to utilize his knowledge: Mr. Bill Kemeza appointed him the Vice Principal of Student Affairs for two years.

Then, he was appointed as Principal, where he worked for seventeen years.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Hughes has reinforced and expanded a culture of hard work, caring, and kindness. This mission has been achieved through events such as Ignatian Values Day, programs such as the Madden Scholars, and the example of servant leaders.

After seventeen years of service to the BC High community as principal, Mr. Hughes has announced that he will be taking a sabbatical. After touching up on new teaching techniques, he hopes to return to teaching for one last time before he hangs up the ruler.

In the time since this piece was first outlined and drafted, our

world has changed immeasurably. When we initially set out to mark an important milestone in the history of global education at BC High, no one could have guessed what was on the horizon. But, in the Jesuit context, there is perhaps no better time than challenge and uncertainty to reflect. The spirit of this piece – and the spirit of global education at BC High – has never been about travel, but rather the connectivity which unites all of us around the world.

he roots of global education at BC High are long and winding, but ultimately anchored in the Society of Jesus’s founding mission to spread the message of Christ around the world.

In 1863, a new school was founded to educate the children of Irish Catholic immigrants. Many of the Jesuit faculty were immigrants – and almost all of them had been called to serve around the world.

In the 150 years that followed, generations of BC High students engaged with global citizenship in their own ways.

Most recently, alumni from the early 2000s have experiences grounded in

service trips to El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. But for so many others, global education at BC High conjures memories of the French exchange program of the 60s and 70s.

Even the mite box has global origins nearly a century old. As early as 1924, Rev. Henry J. Wessling, SJ organized a weekly collection, passing a cardboard box around each classroom and raising $681 for missions in Jamaica, India, China, Korea, New Mexico and the Philippines.

Perhaps most fascinatingly, the roots – and ultimate fate – of global education at BC High stretch back to a darkened office in Ecuador. There, former Vice President for Global Mission and Identity, Dan Carmody, sat across from Rev. José Mesa, SJ, the International Secretary of Jesuit Education, and pleaded BC High’s case for a global gathering of Jesuit secondary schools – the first

of its kind in half a millennium.

“There was no electricity,” Carmody recalled, “but José asked me to meet with him that evening. He had invited me down to a gathering of all the Presidents and Rectors of Jesuit schools in South America. Originally, he hadn’t promised me the opportunity to speak before the congregation. But after that meeting – he said I had 10 minutes to convince everyone… and I had to do it in Spanish.”

The Jesuit leaders took a leap of faith after hearing the proposal. They committed to holding their own annual gathering in Boston the following year, regardless of whether the rest of the world joined or not. “It gave us something concrete,” he said. “We didn’t have outcomes – we didn’t have much to put behind this conference. But Bill Kemeza told me, ‘Just being together… something good will happen.’ So that’s what I pitched.

And if the South American leaders didn't commit – the International Colloquium on Jesuit Secondary Education (ICJSE) probably never happens.”

And, if the ICJSE never happens, the history of global education at BC High looks a lot different. Though the Hyde Center and ICJSE were developed separately, they are inextricably linked as the twin geneses of what Carmody has termed

In partnership with Trustee Dr. Martin J. Dunn, DMD ’53, Kemeza dispatched dispatched Carmody to unite Jesuit leadership across the globe, carrying with him news of the South American commitment.

First to Rwanda to meet with the African delegation – then to Europe. The continent-spanning mission intrigued Lawrence Hyde ’42, a firm believer in the transformative impact of global experiences. The Colloquium’s message of collaboration, and the potential for a world-wide network of opportunities deeply resonated with Hyde and Kemeza – who jointly announced the founding of the Hyde Center at the Colloquium’s closing.

The Hyde Center’s first partnerships after opening in 2013 were born from connections made at the Colloquium. At a time when all Jesuit secondary schools were 10

asking themselves how to embrace a newly strengthened global network, Director of Campus Ministry John Mark pointed BC High toward Africa. He, Carmody, Academic Vice Principal Kim Smith, and social studies teacher Mike Clancy ’03 traveled to Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Zambia to create programs with the potential to change students’ lives. Tanzania became the site of BC High’s first international Kairos retreat – taking the beloved tradition global.

An explosion of growth came in the following years. Families were so eager to have their sons undertake a global experience that they didn’t want to wait until high school. To meet that need, the Hyde Center designed a 9-day journey to Costa Rica for students in grades seven and eight exposing them to the country’s ecological wonders.

and seniors. A partnership was established with St. Aloysius College, a K-12 co-ed Jesuit school in Glasgow, Scotland, that allows a joint group of sophomores from BC High and Notre Dame Academy to experience global education early in their high school career.

But the Hyde Center for Global Education isn’t solely defined by its extensive catalogue of nineteen destinations. Two initiatives, the Peretti Scholars and Hyde Global Scholars programs, have allowed students to engage with global topics in a deeper and more consistent basis during their time on Morrissey Boulevard.

Peretti Scholars commit to studying Spanish in a conversational cohort for three academic years, beginning with the summer prior to their freshman year. They seek to exhibit advanced proficiency and heightened cultural awareness by the time they begin senior year by speaking only

Spanish during twice weekly meetings of the cohort and practicing conversation skills one-on-one, meeting weekly with a Spanish-speaking mentor. These adult mentors comprise every corner of the BC High community, from faculty, to the Advancement Office, and the Facilities staff.

Peretti Scholars build their language skills while fostering a deeper sense of community involvement in student formation.

Hyde Global Scholars strive to become citizens of the world through international travel, a commitment to learning a second language, and expanding concrete knowledge on global issues. Upon successful completion of a cohort research project, on-campus and community events, and an independent portfolio of reflections and projects, they receive additional Honors credit and a distinction on their transcript.

offering students a wider range of opportunities than ever before. When asked how the transformational program will continue to grow in the years to come, President Grace Regan P’12 responded, “Our international community is facing the most uncertain time in nearly a century.

As our world continues to adjust to the risks and challenges posed by COVID-19, student safety and wellbeing remains our top priority.”

She continued, “This spring was quite a bit different for our school – particularly the Hyde Center. But the Jesuit mission remains global, as does our commitment to offering students opportunities with the power to change their lives. In the coming years I imagine we will focus on our current partnerships that are deemed to be safe. Our expansion, for the time being, will more likely include offerings that bring the world to our students through

virtual and distance learning than physical travel.”

There’s no question that the global community faces an unprecedented period of fear and doubt. The Hyde Center may function differently for the next few years – and will look different, not just from the effects of COVID, but from the departure of Carmody in January to serve as Head of School at Cathedral High School in Boston’s South End. However, as sure as there are challenges ahead – the effect of global citizenship at BC High has never been more certain.

Summing up his thirteen years at BC High, Carmody had a poignant reflection: “You know, one of the things that will never leave me is seeing Jesuits from India crying at the Colloquium. I can only imagine they were overwhelmed by that once in a lifetime experience – seeing their global impact firsthand. I’ll never forget it.”

AN INTERVIEW WITH PRINCIPAL ADAM LEWIS

A Principal Perspective

“Interculturality is grounded in a shared understanding of our common humanity.”

After leading the BC High community through one of the most turbulent years in recent memory, first-year Principal Adam Lewis has keenly observed the school’s programs and hopes to offer his own unique perspectives. “In Australia, we really treasure stories – and I think that has great meaning in our Jesuit context.”

Lewis’s own story is an impressive and continent-spanning career serving at some of the world’s most renowned Jesuit schools from Saint Ignatius College Riverview in Sydney, Australia to Clongowes Wood College SJ in Kildare, Ireland.

“Stories move our heart, and our behavior as a result. And that’s the outcome we hope to achieve through the Hyde Center and these amazing experiences our students have. So, when we view the Hyde Center’s programming, do we want our boys to be global… or intercultural?”

The distinction may seem minor, but it is an important line of thinking in the Society of Jesus. Three years ago, 12

General Arturo Sosa, SJ noted, “Interculturality makes us experience universality more fully, because it incorporates cultural differences as the revelation of the face of humanity created in God’s image, and it is enriched by the ever-greater exchanges among them. Interculturality isn’t an end in itself, it’s the means with which we can create the conditions to fully experience humanity, contributing to the humanization of individuals, cultures and peoples.

This is more than just recognizing the existence of many cultures in the future and the past (multiculturality).”

Principal Lewis picked up on that thread, “We’re part of a broader global community that we can access like never before. And the temptation has been toward globalization and creating what Fr. Sosa called a ‘reduction in cultural diversity, with a tendency to create a global, mono-cultural space.’ But I believe our boys can enter these spaces

without having to give up who they are.

We want them to have profound experiences rooted in a deep appreciation of story and context so that they can share of themselves while getting a sense of authentic depth from those they encounter around the world.”

But with the challenges presented by COVID-19 raising new questions about the future of international travel, one is forced to ask the question: can we truly walk in the footsteps of other cultures without leaving our own country? Lewis answers this resolutely, “Our education is a movement of the heart, not a movement of the legs to Tanzania. We are more connected than ever, and we hope to continue providing students cultural experiences that transcend the superficial and tokenistic. Interculturality is grounded in a shared understanding of our common humanity. This is often experienced at the margins, where our young men are called, whether they are a mile or a world away.”

STUDENT experience My classroom experience has overwhelmingly been positive. While the progression through my course slowed, I think the boys actually enjoyed this new style of learning.

The experience looks like this: I record my own lecture videos, example problems and my video feed alongside with my screen-shared slides.

For my lectures, I have gotten creative with demo materials, using balloons to mimic hybrid orbitals, a doc cam rigged from my iPad to show my work with the periodic table and worked problems. I have even created my own animations to help my physics students understand the nature and behavior of light. Once a week I meet with the students face-to-face on a Zoom call. We check in with

remotely one another, talk about what is working and what needs to be improved, and review for upcoming assessments. I also hold office hours daily for one-on-one assistance and appreciate the opportunity for face time with students. I even think my office hour appointments are more productive now because students schedule them with specific questions!

I believe students and parents appreciate that I record my own lectures, and not just share something on the internet from a stranger. All my videos are archived on Canvas for the boys to watch and re-watch as they study. In science, I think this is especially helpful because seeing the content and problems once is usually too brief for students to digest the ideas. Student benefit greatly from getting a repeat performance of the steps and logic used to solve multistep problems–– and the results have been evident in performance on homework and quizzes.

Our Chemistry Club, affectionately known as the Lab Rats, has also continued to meet during our remote learning time. We have met to check-in and support one another, as well as discussing the science behind the pandemic after a wonderful presentation on the biology, chemistry and physics of COVID researched and presented by the group leadership. It is definitely harder to do, but we are making our club work remotely with fun ideas like a cooking chemistry meeting on Friday for grilled cheese sandwiches.

In all, I think BC High was well positioned for this pandemic. Our students and teachers were already using the frontlines of technology in the classrooms to delivery instruction, assess student performance and create new learning opportunities beyond their curriculum. Our transition to remote learning went smoothly because our classrooms were prepared and accustomed to have technology as a core learning tool.

Since the beginning of quarantine, I created a morning routine for myself to mirror somewhat of a schedule.

One of which is logging onto Twitter and checking the Dalai Lama’s most recent tweet. Yes, I am an avid fan of the Dalai Lama’s Twitter account, but I’m not the only one. I have 19.3 million other supporters with me. The tweets are brief counsels for living a more aware and moral life.

Earlier in April, on a sunny morning, after waking up at 8:28 a.m. just because I could, the daily quote stood out from the rest.

It read: “The very purpose of spirituality is self-discipline. Rather than criticizing others, we should evaluate and criticize ourselves.

Ask yourself, what am I doing about my anger, my attachment, my pride, my jealousy? These are things we should check in our day to day lives”.

Class of 2020, when we first entered BC High, we had things done for us. Starting from the first day of orientation when our senior mentors welcomed us, walked us down to the bookstore to take our Eagle Card picture, and let us have the satisfaction of winning against them in dodgeball. But now, we are the ones leading the freshmen down the halls telling them where the language labs are. We are the ones leading cohorts through the Mother Teresa Project to engage and liven the experience of students with

learning disabilities. We are the ones planning the inaugural homecoming. But it doesn’t stop once you’re granted the title of alumnus. It only heightens the responsibility. The uncertain times we find ourselves in are a testament to the calling that we have.

I want you to know that life is not a straight line. It is filled with twists and turns, peaks and valleys. And trust me right now, it is extremely difficult to remove yourself from the bubble of frustration and despair that confines you. But doing so allows you to see the opportunities to make the most from our current situation. What are BC High alumni doing? They’re collecting old devices to donate to a medical center facilitating communication between family members in the hospital. They’re creating a Facebook group to brainstorm ideas and fundraise for a scholarship fund dedicated to students of color.

Taking a step back to reflect is sometimes necessary to take two steps forward. So I ask you. What are you doing about your complacency? What are you doing about your ignorance? What are you doing about your prejudice?

And most importantly what are you doing about your privilege?

It will not be easy – but no change ever came with ease. As BC High alumni, we have an obligation, a moral responsibility to ask these hard questions of ourselves, so we can lead. We have worked incredibly hard the past four years. As we get through this period, know that your accomplishments will be recognized.

Coach Ryan Dacey has been named Boston Globe Ski Coach of the Year for the 2019-2020 winter season after leading the team to second

Former Football and Baseball Captain Tom Conley ’08 has been named Assistant Athletic Director.

Conley has spent the past seven years in the collegiate ranks, coaching Baseball at Bryant, Trinity College, Harvard, and Rutgers.

During that time, Tom was also the head coach of the Pittsfield Suns in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Welcome back Tom!

The #2 seed Varsity Hockey Team lost an OT thriller to St. John’s Prep, 3-2, ending their Super 8 run. The Eagles had a great season including defeating Central Catholic 4–1 to win the Pete Frates Holiday Tournament.

Varsity Lacrosse Coach Marcus Craigwell was recently featured in the Boston Globe in a piece on the opportunity to address racism through athletics. Our studentathletes bond with their fellow Eagles and coaches, developing a deep appreciation for the lived experience of others through vulnerability, teamwork, and a willingness to learn.

Addresses the End of Spring Season When Governor Baker announced that school campuses would remain closed for the year, the slim chance of a shortened spring sport season was over. As student-athletes across the state tried to process this loss, we at BC High had a phenomenal resource: Massachusetts General Hospital Psychologist Dr. Steve Durant ’71. A former football player at BC High, Dr. Durant stayed active by playing Rugby for the Wolfhounds well into his sixties.

Q: Working with athletes from the professional, collegiate, and high school levels – Has anything in your 40+ years of experience helped you prepare for something as extreme as this, seasons getting cancelled at all levels?

A: “Well, professionally, I’ve had a lot of experience with people who have gone through their own trauma and – I had my own little experience with fear and serious injury, so that does give me some foundation for trying to navigate these rough waters. Also, here in Boston, we had the experience of the lockdown during the Marathon Bombing and nationally with the post 9/11 response. But due to the global nature of this pandemic and its economic fallout, there perhaps is even more anxiety and fear.

We recover from anxiety and fear as we can re-establish some sense of relative safety and predictability. We get the best advice from our professionals like Dr. Fauci and we take reasonable steps for protecting ourselves and each other. We then do our best to accept the situation and come up with the next best thing we can do. We recognize we are not alone and take steps to stay in contact. We recognize we can manage our fear, sadness and anger and we find those moves that we can make that help us adjust and stay connected.”

Q: How difficult is it for a BC High student-athlete to hear that the spring season is over, and yet with the quarantine still in effect, process the finality of the season without the company of their teammates, classmates, and coaches?

A: “It is very painful, to state the obvious. And it does no good in my opinion to skirt that issue or plaster a happy face emoji on it.

Parents naturally do not like to see their kids suffer so they may try and coax teens out of their bad feelings. I am more of the opinion that we should be aware of those feelings without immediately jumping to judge or eliminate them. We move to accept them as a natural human response to a bad situation. We are aware of what we are going through emotionally. We move to accept it and we commit to the next best thing to do.

In terms of advice, I would go back to the #1 Rule of Emotional Health – do not suffer alone. Stay connected to your Go-To people and your Go-To behaviors.

For student-athletes, if you want to avoid your parents hovering over you and incessantly asking how you’re doing, then demonstrate your ability to check in with them on your own. Your parents are often your best Go-To's, but coaches, captains, teachers, best friends, girlfriends, uncles, aunts, grandparents, all can play that role. They should be trustworthy, able to hold a confidence and be supportive with good advice.

Go-To behaviors – with injured elite athletes, we often encourage using healing time to build mental toughness and a more resilient game. Twenty minutes a day of gratitude-based prayer or meditation actually increases the functioning of your cortex. So, this meditation can build your ‘mastery’ brain that allows you to perform in adversity. “Head Space” or the “Calm” app are excellent ways to build this ability. Also, we encourage the use of imagery with sport specific cues to keep the athlete’s’ brain immersed in his sport, even if they are unable to practice in real time. Watching highlights for thirty second clips, then pausing the video and closing your eyes to replay what you have just seen yourself do, as if it were really happening, is a good example of the use of sport specific imagery.

Besides prayer and meditation – exercise – even if it’s at home and not ideal like being at the gym. Helping Others. Music. Art. Nature.

Fishing. Woodworking, etc. are examples of Go-To behaviors.

Cultivate those healthy things you can do. Now is a good time to pick one new thing, you’ve never had the chance to do, but wished to do. For example, I know NHL players who used extended injurytime to improve their cooking skills or improve their French. I’ve used this time to learn some very simple tai-chi exercises online.”

Q: You are an alumnus of the school, your two sons (Brian ’01 and Michael ’10) are graduates of the school, and you have a clear understanding and respect for the school’s mission.

What positives can our seniors, and not just the athletes, but the entire senior class, take away from what has happened to their senior year?

A: “What is the ultimate goal of sports at a Jesuit high school? I would submit that one answer is sports are vehicles for building character and life-long friendships. Athletics are another way to build Men for Others. We cannot always choose our teachable moments nor the adversity that arises in our lives. All we can do is make the most of the time we are given. The loss of sport, although incredibly painful, I think most of all for a high school senior athlete, need not result in the loss of that opportunity to build character and crucial friendships. In the shared trial of this pandemic adversity there is the great opportunity to make that extra effort to 18

live by your code and fight to stay connected, not just for the present but for the years to come. Once a teammate, always a teammate.

Playing at BC High gave me an overwhelming appreciation for the camaraderie, affection and connectedness of friends and teammates.

I so cherished that connectedness from that sense of team at BC High, that I sought to continually replicate it after high school, with over 42 years of rugby, often with or against other BC High friends, or alumni, including my sons and sons of friends. I would say I learned this continually over the years, but the foundation was built by Coaches Cotter, Casey, Molloy, and Ananis. And I’ll end by saying I am most grateful for all that I received at BC High. My hope is that despite the losses you've experienced, you too will stay connected over the years and you will be strengthened by your own good character and that sense of deep connectedness.”

KANSAS STATE BASEBALL HEAD COACH PETE HUGHES ’86 Shares Season Shut Down Experience Q: Your season was under way this spring until the spread of COVID-19 shut down all NCAA spring sports.

Did you have time to meet with your team, and what did you tell your players once you received the news?

A: “I received word of the NCAA’s decision during our practice on March 12. At the time there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the decision to cancel the National Championships. Would we be able to continue the season at some point?

Would the season be bumped to the fall? Can we continue to practice as a team? After our practice I broke the news to our team. I told them that we were about to enter a world of unknowns. And the only way to prepare themselves for this is to put themselves in positive place mentally. Control only what they can control and think the best. I gave them weekend off and told them to spend the time together as teammates.”

Q: Tell us about the impact on the seniors, especially where most of them will not be playing organized baseball again.

How did you help them cope through this news?

A: “Originally, we thought that our seniors’ careers were over. I told them that their careers were not defined by their “senior year.” Their legacy had already been defined by the commitment and the lifetime preparation that they represented. They had already won and will always be winners in life because of these acquired traits they found through our sport. We are all extremely grateful that the NCAA has since granted them an extra year of eligibility.”

Q: Do you think with all sports, professional through youth, coming to a halt, student-athletes across the country are realizing the importance of their education?

A: “I think this a harsh way to remind us all that at some point in every athlete’s life there is going to be “the end”. Our athletic skillset does not last forever. Our educational skillset does. It’s one’s own choice on how proficient we become in this skillset. This will determine who we are and how we are going to do in our real life. It is times like this when sports are taken away from us that we realize it is not about the games won, the goals or points scored, or how fast we ran a race.”

Q: How has this impacted your life with your family?

A: “My wife and I have 5 children and in recent years we are very seldom all together. With that being said, the greatest impact of all us being under the same roof again can be seen in the spike of our weekly grocery expenditures and the lack of parking spots in our driveway! Seriously, there are very few upsides involving a pandemic situation. However, we as a family are always grateful for our health and when we can all be together. There is nothing better than family in good times and in bad.”

Q: As an alumnus of the school, and member of the BC High Athletic Hall of Fame for 2 sports (Baseball and Football), what characteristics did you learn from BC High that have remained with you during your storied coaching career?

A: “Being a student-athlete at BC High had the most influence in building my foundation for my personal and professional life. Your foundation defines who you are, which is all we have during hard times. BC High taught me to have a tremendous sense of pride in my preparation. You had to be diligent and thorough in your preparation academically. You had to be relentless, consistent, and disciplined in your preparation athletically. If you were not any of these things and were sloppy in your preparation you got exposed in both arenas.

Same is true with my professional life. BC High is not a “fake it till you make it” institution – academically or athletically. There are no shortcuts on 150 Morrissey Boulevard.”

LACROSSE CAPTAIN ZACH SWANSON ’20

Q: As a captain, did you communicate with your teammates on a regular basis? What words of encouragement did you give them?

A: “Almost every day we shoot texts back and forth to see how everyone is doing. A few players who I am very close with talk about the delayed season or certain lacrosse videos we like, or something not lacrosse related. It is difficult to keep morale up for anyone during these difficult times, however, we have found everyone is still really dialed in on their own.”

Q: With all the facilities closed, and students confined to stay at home, is there any way for an athlete to somehow prepare for the season?

A: “Find your wall. It’s a cheesy phrase I used to think when my middle school coaches would just say, ‘find your wall to go play wall ball on’.

During this time, I look back at that line and find it more fitting than ever. Fortunately, I have a net and a bounce back in my yard, but I have really expanded where to play catch: Off of my uneven chimney, the side of my shed, the inside wall of my garage with a tennis ball.

I have even tried to do it off of a tree, but I do not recommend it.

Everyone is in the same boat as each other, but if one is motivated enough, they can make do with what they have in their yard. Then there is always running. Just run. Sprints, miles, whatever it may be.”

Q: Reflect on what is has been like to live at home in this ‘new world’. What have you learned about yourself?

A: “Life is just like sports, you are going to have to deal with adversity and find your way around it. Making the adjustments to my lifestyle, homework plan, or training routine is making adjustments at halftime during a close game. It is going to be difficult, however, it can be done with a commitment to the task. I have learned a lot about myself being trapped in my house. I have learned more about my personality and what I have to do in the future to succeed. That is in any aspect of life whether it is lacrosse, academically, or socially.”

Q: This is certainly a year the school, and more importantly the Class of 2020, will never forget. What do you tell your classmates?

A: “I think my classmates and I all have a similar mindset in this situation. It is unfortunate, we will miss our last semester of high school to a pandemic. That being said, I think everyone has time to reflect on what BC High has meant to them for the last 4 or 6 years. Whether it is friendships developed, useful lessons you learned, an impact a teacher had on you, or the memories that you made. Everyone will realize how beneficial BC High was for them. I speak for myself and some of my teammates, this time apart from each other has brought us closer as we continue our lives into college and beyond.”

Q: How have you liked virtual learning on Zoom?

A: “Virtual learning has obviously been a big change, however, it has been great in the current situation with the absence of school.

It simulates as much as possible a classroom while being in the comfort of home.”

Bob Riley ’47, a retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Navy Supply Corps School in September 2018 at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. Of the thousands of graduates of the Navy Supply Corps School over many years, Riley was the 55th person to receive this honor. Other recipients of the award include NFL Hall of Famer Roger Staubach and J. Willard Marriott Jr., chairman of Marriott International.

Triple Eagle Jack Maguire ’57 couldn't be prouder of his family (8 children, 13 grandchildren) for all their good works and sacrifices.

His daughter Terri just donated her kidney to her brother-in-law Steve and the Maguire clan celebrated the birth of their great-grandson Clyde.

Jack is the Chairman and Founder of Maguire Associates, Inc. which has thrived for 36 years, serving hundreds of educational institutions including BC High and Boston College.

Thomas O'Brien ’57 and Joe Navoy ’60 helped as wardroom naval officers to build USS Aspro (SSN 648) at (then) Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp. in Pascagoula, MS. They served on the initial shakedown crew and transited the Panama Canal to her initial home port of Pearl Harbor, HI. Thomas was embarked through Hawaiian Op Area trials and left Aspro in the spring of 1980 after passing ADM Rickover’s Engineer Officer Certification Exam in Washington, D.C. He went on to have a rewarding submarine career, including two commands at sea, retiring as

CAPT, USN, after 27+ years. Joe served in Aspro through her first special operational mission/deployment and later opted to become Medical Officer through the Navy’s conversion program. He is a retired CAPT, MC, USN and was a Pediatric Radiologist at U.S. Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, FL when the two Eagles were reunited in 2008. Joe lives with his wife, Mary Jean, in Jacksonville.

Dick Reale ’57 couldn’t be prouder of his granddaughter, Taylor Reale, a 2017 graduate of Boston College who graduated from Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine in May. Paul Horrigan ’58, a Vietnam Veteran, is the chair of the Westborough Town Veterans Advisory board.

Jack MacKinnon ’58 and his wife Rosemary co-chaired the Jesuit Gala at the Boston Copley Marriott Hotel in 2019. The honorees for the evening were the ten Jesuit High Schools located in the USA Northeast Province, led by BC High. The Gala was attended by approximately 650 guests, including more than eighty Jesuits, and raised in excess of $800,000.

Art Ross ’59 has been retired for nearly 20 years, enjoying life and family in Kingwood, Texas! Art studied Geology at Boston College before pursuing a master’s degree from Virginia Tech. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers doing geology in Panama and Brazil to locate another canal to supplement the Panama Canal. He finished his tour in 1969 and moved to Houston to work for Humble Oil and Refining Company.

Bill Murphy ’60, dear friend of Hal Pheeny ’60, passed away in November. Bill and Hal grew up together four houses apart in Newton and attended the same elementary school, BC High and Boston College together. Bill was an altar server at Hal’s wedding in 1966 and they remained close despite the geographic distance between Falmouth and Clearwater, FL. Here’s to a lifetime of friendship!

Joseph W. Chevarley, Jr. ’63 is a management lecturer at Northeastern University’s College of Business in the International Strategy and Business Group. He also teaches organizational behavior at Boston College’s Woods College of Advancing Studies and has taught strategic management at Bentley University. He is particularly interested in the debate about business responsibility, the link between company culture and strategy, and managing across national cultures. Prior to his academic career, Chevarley taught business English and cross-cultural communication in Japan and Hawaii – and served in the U.S. Air Force in South Korea.

Jerry York ’63, the winningest coach in college hockey history, has been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. York has won five national titles and tallied more than 1,000 victories in his nearly five decades as a Division I head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College.

Americans for the Arts President and CEO Robert L. Lynch ’67 was named to the 2019 Nonprofit Times Power & Influence Top 50, an annual list in its 22nd year highlighting the nonprofit sector’s top working executives for innovation and influence on the broader sector. This is the fifth year that Lynch has been recognized by the publication for his leadership for Americans for the Arts. He was previously recognized in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2018.

Joe Melanson ’69 recently celebrated 35 years of teaching in the inner city of Los Angeles. Joe has also dedicated nearly 20 years serving the Compton Fire Department as a volunteer. Come back to Boston soon Joe! Lenny Nolan ’69 and his wife, Arlene, are now up to 22 grandchildren ranging in ages from 1 to 17.

Paul Kenney ’70 writes a national college football column online for the Patriot Ledger that runs on

Thursdays and Mondays during the college football season. He has been a Heisman voter since 2007.

Stan Luniewicz ’70 was on campus this fall planning for his 50th Reunion. His daughter Christina recently graduated from Cornell and was an Ivy League Bars Champion as a gymnast. Younger daughter Emma is currently rowing for the University of Michigan and her boat won the Big Ten’s in Wisconsin last year.

Leo W. Banks ’71 graduated from Boston College and earned a master’s degree from the University of Arizona, where he later taught writing. He has written four books of Old West history for Arizona Highways publishing and co-wrote a book about the Grand Canyon.

Today, Banks writes a column for True West magazine.

Brian Barron ’71 welcomed his first grandchild, Jacob Jeffrey Barron, last year. Congratulations!

The Semper Fi Fund announced that their new Chairman of the Board will be General Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. USMC (Ret.) ’73.

General Dunford served as the 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s highest-ranking

military officer and the principal military adviser to the President from October 2015 to September 2019.

The Class of 1974 remembers their classmate Dr. Stephen Bresnahan ’74. He truly led the life of a BC High graduate and man for others. His funeral was attended by 2,000 people, where Fr. Jim Shaughnessy, SJ, chaplain at Tufts Medical Center, gave a wonderful sermon. The two were united by lifelong friendship and their service in the healthcare field.

Tom Pattavina ’75, P’20 has returned to music after a 25-year hiatus. He has rejoined The Standards, resuming his role of the late ’80s and early ’90s as the bass player. The Standards has been the opening act for Rick Derringer, the B52s and Livingston Taylor, as well as performing all around the South Shore and MetroWest. His “day job” is managing Pattavina Networks, small business IT support, entering its 20th year.

Kevin J. Trieber ’77 visited campus with his wife Molly. Kevin had not returned to campus since graduation and was impressed with the new facilities. He is a Senior Vice President in the Investment Banking Division of BankAmerica Corp, focusing on assisting companies with their Employee Stock Ownership Programs (ESOPs) and lives with Molly in Pasadena. He looks forward to reconnecting with his class at their 45th reunion in 2022!

Ricardo Austrich ’80 was elected President of the Boston Society of Landscape Architects in 2018, representing Landscape Architects in Massachusetts and Maine – the oldest chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architecture.

He recently joined the BSC Group, a multi-disciplinary engineering firm with offices throughout Southern New England, as Landscape Architecture Manager. He greeted Governor Charlie Baker at the Rose Kennedy Greenway Gala’s tenth anniversary last year and traveled with his spouse to the Scottish Highlands.

Mike ’82 and Kala Moynihan served as co-chairs of the annual gala benefit for the Chicago Children’s Choir. Each fall, over 600 of dedicated supporters gather to support the mission to inspire and change lives through music. Every year the choir impacts the lives of more than 5,000 Chicago youth.

Kevin Bruen ’82 is now second in command of the New York State Police. In his new job, Bruen oversees the State Police aviation, protective services, disciplinary and public information units, as well as the agency’s planning and research.

Michael T. Sullivan ’85 recently moved to the law firm of Prince Lobel Tye LLP, where he will continue his law practice in the area of civil litigation, with emphasis on construction, real estate, and professional liability disputes.

Peter Nadeau ’84 is proud to announce that his wife Karen has opened her own Personal Injury Law Firm (Nadeau Harkavy LLC) in Cambridge. The couple reside in Reading, MA with their two children – Brian, Boston College ’22 and Jenna, Austin Prep ’22. The former BC High baseball catcher recently celebrated 31 years working for the Massachusetts Department of Correction.

In February, John Griffin ’87 launched a new consulting firm: Clear Way Forward helping companies create an innovative culture and develop agile leaders, while maintaining alignment to strategic goals and objectives.

The endeavor allows John to combine his passion for training and mentoring, applying 28 years as a Marine and doctorate work in Organizational Leadership.

Assistant Professor in the College of Business at the University of Texas at Arlington where he teaches Business Communication classes and serve as Coordinator of the BCOM program.

Last June, Colonel Richard Corner ’93 was assigned to serve as the Army Reserve G-1 located at Fort Bragg, NC. Rich serves as the senior Human Resources Officer responsible for the lifecycle management of over 190,000 Soldiers and manages a $4.3 billion-dollar budget. Rich’s family consists of his wife Nicolle and their children William, Ava, Emily, and Abigail.

Andrew Sodroski ’00 and his wife, Carolyn Hammer are awaiting the birth of their second son, due in September. The oldest, Justin, is six-and-a-half years old and is very excited to be a big brother. Last summer the Sodroskis were happy to introduce Justin to Rob Hanna ’00 and Brendan Connors ’00 and their families at their 15-year Harvard reunion. Andrew is currently in production of the second season of his television show, “Manhunt: Lone Wolf.” He created, wrote, and executive produced the series, and the first season was nominated for a Writers Guild of America award for Best Limited Series.

Stephan Delbos ’01 recently published a new collection of poems, Light Reading, with BlazeVox Books based in Buffalo.

Stephan's poetry, essays and translations have appeared internationally. He is a founding editor of the web journal B O D Y and lives with his wife and two sons in Prague, the Czech Republic.

Nearly 10 years ago Dan Carmody told a group of BC High students about the transformative impact of the global experience before them: “Someday one of these guys might wind up in your wedding.” That became a reality for Nick McMahon ’13 and his Argentine brother, Nacho Torrendell — a groomsman in Nick’s wedding. Through the Hyde Center, Nick hosted students from Colegio Del Salvador two years in a row and went to Buenos Aires in the summer of 2012. Nacho visited his family two or three times since that trip, and Nick’s family hosted three more of the Torrendell children.

Brendan Pigott ’04 and his wife Emily welcomed their first child, Liam Gerard Pigott, into the world on May 19, 2019. Brendan continues working for the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command in Norfolk, Virginia as a federal employee. The Pigotts hope to visit Boston soon and swing by campus!

Blaine Woodcock ’13 was promoted to First Lieutenant in May 2019 and is currently stationed at Joint Base Lewis McChord in Washington state with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps.

Luke Maietta ’12 and Julia Hussey were married last May at Felicity Church in New Orleans. The reception included a traditional New Orleans second line with family and friends. Julia and Luke currently live in Las Vegas, NV, where Julia is progressing towards her Ph.D. in Clinical Neuropsychology and Luke works in Commercial Real Estate Property Management.

Jonathan "Monty" Mantovani ’12 produced a docuseries that just launched with Netflix called Basketball or Nothing. As a young filmmaker in the field, he has broken barriers with this work and has run his own small team for the past two years to get the series on Netflix.

Monty attributes the lessons he learned at BC High with paving the way for his career.

Harry Clow ’15 graduated from Georgetown University last May and commissioned into the U.S. Navy as an Ensign.

Connor Murphy ’15 was a recipient of the Gabelli Scholar Program at Boston College – an undergraduate academic, merit program that annually awards full-tuition scholarships and fully-funded, GPSP-sponsored summer programs to 15 incoming freshman students.

Ryan Sweeney ’15, son of Matt ’85 and brother of Connor ’13, was recently honored by the Boston Fire Local 718 IAFF along with his neighborhood friends, Peter Cahill and Timmy Galvin. Five years ago, they started a street hockey tournament to raise money for the family of a Dorchester man who was battling cancer. After five years, they have raised over $80,000 for various families in Dorchester.

Colin Dale ’16 completed his first feature-length film, shot on the South Shore with the help of Nick Boozang ’16, Jack Donius ’16, Kal Maier ’16, and Alec Carstoiu ’19.

Last year, John Fitzpatrick ’18 fundraised over $3,500 for the Best Buddies Challenge. He went to the charity football game at Harvard Stadium, ran their annual 5k in Hyannis, and even got to meet Tom Brady!

t the annual Magis reception in December, President Grace Regan P’12 announced that BC High had received a $1 million gift that will establish the Michael White ’70 Center for Emerging Leaders – a transformational program to change the way students learn, experience, and practice leadership.

“Jesuit education is uniquely suited to preparing young men for leadership in uncertain times. We are part of a 500year-old tradition where reflection and self-discovery have acted as catalysts for global change – rooted in a pioneering, entrepreneurial spirit. In fact, the Society of Jesus might just be the most successful ‘start-up’ in history, with more than 1000 schools across the globe. We couldn’t ask for a more fitting partner in this endeavor than Mike White,” said Regan.

Mike is the former Chairman, President and CEO of DIRECTV and former CEO

of PepsiCo. International, where he spent almost 20 years. His commitment to Jesuit education is rooted in a family full of BC High graduates and his time at Boston College – where he now serves as a trustee.

“BC High provided a superb foundation for my college and graduate school studies and significantly shaped my values. Leadership requires engagement of the heart, head and hands and this school has shaped countless outstanding leaders in every walk of life,” White reflected.

“From the government to the military to business to academia to the religious life – we need more leaders to help shape tomorrow’s world,” he continued. “I have been fortunate to play a leadership role in business in my career and hope I can share some of my learning and experiences as part of this initiative.”

White seeks to empower young men faced with a world of rapid, disruptive and often uncomfortable change; from

The White Center will be a cornerstone in BC High’s mission to equip students with the necessary skills to be leaders of integrity in an evolving economic and ethical landscape.

Ms. Jennifer Manning of the Religious Education Department has been chosen to develop and launch the initiative: “The Mike White Center will hone the skills that BC High seeks to instill in our students: empathy, courage, self-awareness, and servant leadership. I am thrilled to support the school in this vital mission.”

Her plan for the center is firmly grounded in the Ignatian tradition, where the Michael White ’70 Center for Emerging Leaders will model and teach authentic leadership to unlock students’ own potential not to benefit themselves, but to build a more just and more inclusive world.

Tom Conley ’08, Assistant Athletic Director, married Amelia Pepe on December 28, 2019 in Quincy, MA. Amelia is a 2008 alumna of Notre Dame Academy. Tom writes, “she was my high school girlfriend and prom date too!”

TEACHING WITH TROUT www.mass.gov/service-details/teaching-with-trout Elena Gourlis’s AP Environmental Science classes recently worked with the National Fish & Wildlife Association to raise brown trout from eggs and put the “fingerlings” (little fish about the size of your finger) in Houghton’s Pond, one of the designated restocking areas. We received trout eggs in early January, and they hatched and grew in our tank. This is our second year working with this federal group, who has the capacity to breed the trout but not raise all of them. This is where schools like us can step in and help. These trout are to restock the ponds and local waterways all over Massachusetts for recreational fishing.

DRIFTER/SEA TURTLE STRANDING STUDY www.nefsc.noaa.gov/drifter/drift_bchigh_2019 Meanwhile, Marine Biology classes constructed a drifter, which was used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to track turtle strandings in Cape Cod Bay. Many turtles migrate long distances both along the Atlantic Coast and across the ocean. They feed along the Atlantic Coast during the summer months and should head to the warmer waters off the Southern U.S. and Mexico as the weather turns. Every year however, hundreds of turtles get “stuck” in Cape Cod Bay because of the unique geography. As the temperature drops, the turtles (including many very-endangered Kemps Ridley, Loggerheads and Green) become cold-stunned and wash ashore on beaches in Wellfleet and Orleans. Because they are amphibians, they will die if they do not get rescued. Our drifter was used to help inform NOAA and the Audubon Society as to where the currents were traveling — which informed scientists as to where the turtles would likely wash ashore. And, it did!

There were some turtles off of Great Island in Wellfleet that washed ashore, and the volunteers were waiting for them, thanks to our drifter!

In Memoriam P atrick F. C adigan ’52

Pat Cadigan ’52 passed away on April 20, 2020. After graduating from BC High in 1952 and Boston College in 1957, Pat worked as a product manager at Sylvania Electronic Systems in Waltham for five years before being recruited to the West Coast to oversee sales and marketing for the Electronic Engineering Company of California (EECO). He rose rapidly to become its President and CEO, running the company for nearly 20 years, and expanding it both nationally and internationally. During this time, he also served on the boards of 15 firms. He retired from EECO after his wife, Barbara, was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and later served as chairman and CEO of several public companies, including Gateway Communications, Inc., and Linear Instruments Corporation.

He invested in Orange County real estate for 40 years – his primary focus upon retiring from the high-tech business world.

In addition to his Jesuit education, he received an MBA from Boston University, a degree from Harvard University’s Advanced Management Program, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate University – where he studied under the late business philosopher Peter Drucker, and where he would eventually serve on its board of trustees. He also served on the foundation board at the University of California, Irvine.

But Pat cited his Jesuit education as the pivotal factor in his personal formation and professional success, “My education at BC High and Boston College was a great experience that taught me the importance of hard work, and instilled in me values and discipline that stayed with me throughout my years. The foundation I received at both schools left an indelible impression on me, and prepared me for success in business and in life.” He credited the discipline and moral training of his Jesuit teachers as factors that helped him, the son of Irish immigrants who worked part-time at his father’s bar in Cambridge to help pay for his education, to become one of Orange County’s most successful high-tech leaders and real estate investors.

Pat transformed the fine and performing arts program at BC High with his $12 million donation – the largest gift in our school’s history. His philanthropy enabled us to envision and build Cadigan Hall, a center for arts and recreation that provided additional studio space and a new gymnasium.

After returning home, Joe attended Boston College on the GI Bill®, where he “learned what St. Ignatius did to make the world a better place.” His faith, and more specifically, his Jesuit education, played an instrumental role in both his personal and professional life, a self-described, “product of Jesuit values.”

Joseph Edward Corcoran ’53, P’80, ’82, ’90, GP’11, ’14, ’17, ’19 passed away on June 3, 2020 peacefully in the company of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild at his home in Milton.

Joe was born in Dorchester during the Great Depression, the youngest of eight children of Irish Immigrants. He grew up in the Uphams Corner neighborhood, a diverse, mixed-income neighborhood that would later shape his vision for how communities can and should be developed. He only considered his family as materially poor, but as a member of a mixed-income community, never inferior. “All throughout my life, that was my concept of what a neighborhood should be, and I still think this is how people should live”.

Joe attended St. Peter’s school and continued on to Boston College High School. Following in the footsteps of his older brothers, after graduation, Joe enlisted in the Army during

Corcoran Jennison earned national recognition for advancing the concept of mixed-income housing and converting troubled public housing projects into successful communities. He made it his mission to bring people from different incomes together and provide social services for those of humble means.

A champion for the less fortunate, Joe’s philanthropic contributions reflected his belief that a good education has the power to transform a young person’s life. Joe leaves behind a tremendous legacy at BC High. His philanthropic investments spanned a broad range of programs including the Corcoran Library and a unique Living Library program that brings noted contemporary scholars to campus to share their work with students, faculty, and the community at large. Following his belief that education equals opportunity, he established a scholarship at BC High for African-American students who show outstanding academic ability. Since 2003, BC High has named 13 of our most accomplished students to be Corcoran City Scholars. For his contributions to the BC High community, Boston and beyond, Joe received the St. Ignatius award in 1997.

GIL SULLIVAN ’62, passed on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020. He was a proud graduate of St. Mark’s, Dorchester, Boston College High School and Boston College. All were very dear to his heart along with all the Sisters, Jesuits and lay teachers who helped him along. Gil was the founder of Independent Packaging, Inc., a New England container distributing company. I-PAK was sold in 2007, and Gil retired and was able to spend more time helping friends. He was a former trustee of BC High, the National Association of Container Distributors, Carney Hospital Foundation Board and Nativity Prep, Boston and Nativity Prep, New Bedford. All were beneficiaries of his time, talent and treasure – and especially his humor. He was a member of the Clover Club of Boston, the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, numerous Irish organizations, and a proud St. Ignatius Award Recipient in 2009.
