t press time, while editing the final pages of this wonderful issue, my ears where treated to the returning sounds of springtime.

The birds were merrily chirping and I even had a fat quail on my window ledge cooing and admiring the mason jar full of fresh picked daffodils on my desk. After a long winter, this time of year feels like someone flicked the switch from black and white to Technicolor jolting your senses back to life.

Collecting the news for this issue also sparked me back to life as I read about all of the amazing spring wine releases coming soon and the incredible array of wine country events in store for us this year. Hooray! I see that the glamourous and easy to pair rosés are being offered by many more wineries in many different styles. If

you have not yet been converted— it’s only a matter of time.

Please enjoy every moment of spring as it deepens into the treasured summer. Travel to all of our glorious wine regions stretched across the province – from Kamloops to the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, there is so much to taste! riginally founded and planted by a retired tugboat captain in 2007, the 40 Knots Vineyard & Estate Winery is in now the loving hands of owners Brenda Hetman-Craig and Layne Robert Craig. The couple heard the siren’s call to the island while living in Calgary and fell in love with the stunning 24-acre vineyard. Located in the Comox Valley, overlooking the Salish Sea, the property has the largest grape vineyard in the Comox Valley and one of the biggest on the island.

The microclimate of the Comox Valley allows warmer temperatures providing a unique terroir for the island grapes to thrive. The Craig’s have chosen to celebrate the whole of the BC winemaking world by creating two distinct labels. The Stall Speed labels, a nod to Layne’s former occupation as a pilot and his love of flying, are made with Okanagan grapes whereas the 40 Knots label is created using their own island estate grapes.

“We have lots happening,” Brenda explains, “We will be bottling at the end of June and we are most excited to be releasing Ziggy, our 2014 Siegerrebe which is absolutely stellar. Along with this beautiful wine we are releasing our popular Pinot Gris, Gamay Rosé, our Uncloaked Chardonnay, and Whitecaps Blend.

These are all very exciting wines from the 2014 vintage as it was most valuable weather for growing grapes and our wines are all now made by the chief winemaker of Okanagan Crush Pad, Mr. Matt Dumayne,” Brenda explains.

Craft beer and food lights up Carlos Gomes’s life.

“If I could, I would cook fine dining meals and serve craft beer to my guests every day,” said the youthful father of two who owns and operates the Vancouver Food tour company.

ecline Ridge Winery in the Shuswap is heralding spring and summer this year with the release of new vintage reds. Like their other cool climate wines, they’re certain to be received well. After all, Recline Ridge won a total of 23 awards in 2014, including several Gold and Platinum medals.

The winery will be busy this late spring and summer, pouring their wines at Kelowna’s WestJet Wine Tastings at the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival in Kelowna May 1st and 2nd and participating in Penticton’s Bacchanalia that same weekend. During the summer on long weekends, Recline Ridge will be hosting live entertainment on its licensed outdoor patio.

The ongoing mission at Recline Ridge is to educate guests and customers on the exciting wines of the Shuswap.

“Wines produced in the Shuswap are the result of a selection process for the grapes best suited for the region,” says co-owner Graydon Ratzlaff.

“Colder winters demand hardier varietals, and a shorter growing season requires early ripening grapes. The resulting white wines are off-dry, cool, crisp, and refreshing, with very fruitforward characteristics. The reds are often lighter in style, but are packed with flavour and offer an alternative to mainstream varietals.”

GET READY TO SAY HOWDY TO MONTE CREEK RANCH WINERY

T

he Thompson Valley, once the true Wild West is now home to a working ranch and the soon to open Monte Creek Ranch Winery.

The winery is located 10 minutes east of Kamloops, BC, just off of Highway 1 and will launch their wine tasting room for the first time this June. Frontiersmen and prospectors once roamed these lands and even infamous train robbers, including Billy Miner, ventured here to find their fortunes out west. It’s now a place for friends and family to gather to enjoy some true western hospitality and home to a state of the art winemaking facility.

At Monte Creek Ranch livestock share the property with grapevines and wildlife on its picturesque 1200 acres.

Visitors are drawn in by the beauty and can now stay a while for a wine tasting and shop for local products, such as the honey from the ranch’s own local hives. They encourage you to bring a picnic, or purchase a local cheese and meat plate should you not have planned ahead, and enjoy a feast on the patio or outside in the park-like settings. The ranch is family friendly and even hosts events such as weddings, concerts and live theatre.

TASTEFULL EXCURSIONS ON THE KAMLOOPS WINE TRAIL

0th Parallel Estate Winery was created because someone had a unique idea. 50th Parallel’s genesis resulted from that idea being used as a pickup line on a houseboat trip that birthed a power couple in 2000. Fast forward eight years and the property that is now their estate winery was purchased and that pickup line became reality. Now Sheri-Lee TurnerKrouzel and Curtis Krouzel are the one-two punch behind one of the most exciting new wineries in the Okanagan Valley. The site has pedigree, having been a hybrid vineyard site for Ste-Michelle Winery up until the pull-out program 1988. The land remained unused until 2008 when Curtis and Sheri-Lee purchased it to start their

Pinot Noir-focused winery.

To give you an idea of how much thought went into this winery, consider this. Because Pinot Noir burns easily in the sun, the rows are oriented at bearing 205 degrees South West which puts grape clusters in shade as the hottest daytime temperatures are reached between 1:00 and 3:00pm.

SPIERHEAD - A PASSION FOR PINOT NOIR

rafting stylish wines from pampered vines in the Okanagan Valley is the mission of Kelowna’s Spierhead Winery. In that spirit, they have released their 2014 Pinot Gris, Rosé and Riesling in time for late spring and summer. These will be featured at some of the many events Spierhead will be hosting or participating in this May and beyond.

These include Foodie Friday May 1st for Spring Wine Festival when Spierhead will be pairing its wine with tasty appetizers prepared by Krafty Kitchen at the winery 3-6 pm. These will continue on the first Friday of every month. That evening, they will be pouring at the Westjet Wine Tasting at Kelowna’s Rotary Centre for the Arts. The following day, 1-4 pm, participating with each of the Fab Five wineries, Spierhead will be matching wines with tasty morsels prepared by the chef at Harvest

Spierhead Winery continues to focus on Pinot Noir as its main varietal. In 2014 Spierhead planted an additional five acres of Pinot Noir. They now grow four different Dijon clones of Pinot Noir, enabling a harmonious, complex Pinot Noir to be created from the home vineyard. More will be planted this year and even more in 2016.

SUMMERHILL PYRAMID WINERY – A TEAM WITH A VISION

anada’s most visited winery needs a great management team to keep the ball rolling.

Winery and vineyards, bistro and gardens—all organic— require the care and attention of people who are committed to the Summerhill vision. Tarrah MacPherson, who was appointed vice president of operations last year, is a perfect fit, CEO Ezra Cipes says.

“Tarrah has a wonderful variety of attributes, with a combination of education and experience that is hard to match, but just as important is her personality. It didn’t take her long to become a truly valuable asset to our team.”

The Nova Scotia born and raised Tarrah didn’t really take wine too seriously until she travelled in Italy.

“Living in London about 15 years ago, it was travelling in Italy that did it,” she says. “Going to tiny places where you ate donkey and you drank Asti.”

At the time she was working for a large firm, doing the work she was educated for, accounting.

During university she had started working in the hospitality industry and would happily have carried on. Her parents insisted she finish her education, so she earned a degree in accounting.

She worked at hotels to pay her way. From university, she went to London and took a job that paid well and led to her developing a passion for wine.

“About a year after that first trip to Italy I started having conversations with some of my bosses about wine. All of a sudden I had something to contribute to the discussions.”

When she saw a wine appreciation course being advertised by the London School of Economics (irony acknowledged) she signed up and every Monday night for 8 weeks she spent 3 hours immersed in the world of wine.

And loved it.

She decided accounting wasn’t her passion, moved back to Nova

Scotia and began to manage a 56-seat Italian restaurant. It wasn’t long before she signed up for a sommelier course, jumping to the third level because of her London and Italy experiences. “It was super tough,” she admits. “It covered so many disciplines— chemistry, biology, geology, history, economics, politics.”

Tarrah’s next job was in Halifax, where she was employed at Nova Scotia’s first private wine

store. She didn’t get a chance to tire of the work. A headhunting firm recruited her to become a wine sales rep in Toronto, an endeavor she never really settled into. “Toronto is such a tough market to work in and I didn’t know anyone. I was cold-calling accounts to sell them high-end European wines. I didn’t love the work, and I certainly didn’t love the weather and the traffic.”

She jumped at the chance to get

back into the hotel industry and headed back to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, for her third tour of duty with the brand. Here is where she truly fell in love with BC wines, and ended up managing the hotels vast list of local and international labels. When Delta Hotels purchased the Grand Hotel in Kelowna, Tarrah was quick to jump at the opportunity to live in the Okanagan. This is where she would first meet Summerhill Pyramid Winery president Steve Cipes. They would continue their friendship by telephone when she moved to Ottawa and then Fredericton. “I knew for a long time that I would eventually work with Steve.”

Steve respected her business and financial acumen and offered her a contract to become the winery’s vice president of operations and last March she made the move back across the country to take her first job at a winery.

“My top priorities were profitability and to bring a bit more polish and structure to Summerhill. I had to move carefully though, because Summerhill is a very successful business model. Another priority became people management. As a small to medium family business, Summerhill has people who wear many hats. The absence of a full time human resources director stretched us pretty thin this past year. But we have a great core of people in key positions here.”

“We work to encourage and empower employees, and to create a safe productive environment where people don’t fear making mistakes. If you aren’t making mistakes you aren’t taking the risks needed to move ahead.”

With new chef Jonas Stadtlander in the kitchen and Sunset Organic Bistro newly renovated, visitors will see some obvious changes, others throughout the winery are less noticeable, but no less important.

hen you see a bottle of wine on a shelf, what goes through your mind? You probably think about the winery name, label design, winery location, grape varietal and price, but do you ever stop to think about all the work that goes into the delicious final product?

From the vineyard crew tending to the delicate vines, to the winemaking team carefully crafting each wine, and the marketing and sales specialists ensuring these wines make it to restaurants and stores, there are a lot of unsung heroes that help produce every bottle. At this time of year, the dedicated cellar team at Volcanic Hills is busy getting ready to put the finished wines in bottle. In one week, their team will bottle seven different wines including Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer (two different versions), Magma Red, Lava, Reserve Pinot Noir and Reserve

Chardonnay. The whites are expected to hit the shelves in early summer, Lava red in July and the remainder later this year.

With the arrival of spring, so to arrives the start of wine touring season with the Spring Okanagan Wine Festival. enticton’s BC VQA Wine Information Centre is the place to stop in the South Okanagan to discover, taste, learn about and purchase over 700 wines from BC VQA wineries, which means they are only made from BC grapes.

For Spring Wine Festival, the Centre will be hosting Corcelettes Estate Winery, Saturday, May 2. Whitewater Cookbook author Shelley Adams will also be signing her cookbooks.

The BC Information Centre plays a vital role in supporting the BC wine community and promoting wine education. It is operated by the nonprofit BC Wine Information Society, which was formed to open this VQA store back in 1996.

YARD WINE IS RELEASED AT UPPER BENCH

W

hile Upper Bench Winery & Creamery acquired the current location relatively recently (2011), the team has been building expertise and traditions in wine and cheesemaking on the Naramata Bench for years. When Gavin Miller visited the Okanagan from England in 1995 he met Shana at Poplar Grove Winery. They soon married and returned to the UK. To pursue his passion to grow grapes and make wine in BC, they returned

in 1997. Shana embarked on her calling to the art of cheesemaking in 2002, learning from the original cheesemaker at Poplar Grove, Sandra Chalmers. While Gavin and Shana worked in industry and raised their family, they planted 140 of their own vines in their home garden to create a one-barrel stock of personal wine annually.

They lovingly tended the vines as a family, and even as toddlers, their children participated. Gavin’s co-fermented Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon became such a favourite, when they attended family and friends’ gatherings, they were always asked to bring their “yard wine.” Flash forward to their partnership with Wayne and Margareta Nystrom to rebuild a former winery to include a state-of-the-art creamery. Today, Upper Bench offers a line of cheeses along with highly lauded wines, and old acquaintances still request “yard wine.” Inspired by that insiders’ tradition, and facilitated by the availability of high quality grapes of those varietals, Gavin decided to broaden Upper Bench’s portfolio with Yard Wine for us all to enjoy. I dropped into Serendipity Winery in March just as owner Judy Kingston and her daughter and winemaker-in-training Katie O’Kell were about to take a new employee through a complete tasting of the Serendipity wine lineup. From my notes: 2011 White Lie Playfully named because Judy was (shhhh….) a lawyer before she went straight and became a farmer/winery owner. This vintage is still bright and lively, and will pair nicely with white fish, oysters, bruschetta, cantaloupe, pears and Gouda cheese.

NEW AWARDS SPARK THERAPY’S APPETITE FOR CHANGE

pring heralds the season of growth, paralleling the dynamic changes happening at Therapy Vineyards and Guesthouse on the Naramata Bench.

“This is our first season with big changes,” says GM Judi Skinner. “There’s new packaging, new retail shopping, and we’re really happy with our new sales team.

We’re especially excited to have some fast, quality food here, and we welcome families. We’re pet and kid-friendly too!”

Therapy’s thrilled to have Lil’s Kitchen Wood-fired Pizzas open on-site midJune. Enjoy quick and delicious homemade pizzas and grilled cheese on freshly baked bread, daily 10-6. The outdoor tables seat 45, but patrons can also order takeout. Future plans include a parking expansion.

Therapy’s also been fine-tuning

Recently, Therapy won six medals at the 2015 Great Northwest Wine Competition, including Gold (2013 Fizziotherapy) and two Silvers (2013 Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Freudian Sip).

“We only have five acres, so we have to do about a hundred things to make a living here,” Karolina laughs. In season, fresh produce – think heirloom tomatoes – are sold on site, but once the 2500 lavender plants are in bloom, a dazzling array of products are produced. Soaps, essential oils (distilled in the gorgeous copper still), bath salts, lotions, linen water, tea, sugar, honey, jelly, vinegar— all infused with the aromatic flower – fill the shop’s shelves and satiate the desires of people who prefer natural products.

As busy as these artistic farmers are (they manage to sell out their products every year) they still make time to introduce new products.

Karolina now collaborates with nearby Legend Distilling to create a line of bitters that invite home bartenders to take their mixing skills to a whole new level.

In addition to the ubiquitous lavender, other flavours include sumac-orange, rose hip and

sarsaparilla.

The art gallery upstairs features many of the paintings Karolina produced for the brilliant book, Okanagan Slow Road.

Here let the deep brambleberry, rich spice, coffee and cocoa aspects of this wine released Fall 2014, comprised of Malbec grapes entirely from the onsite estate vineyard, mingle with the bitter notes of the dark chocolate.

The tannins are tamed and you’ll want to play this melody of flavours on and on. For the crescendo, prepare yourself for the Reserve Riesling Icewine ($69.90) matched with a dark chocolate truffle. T

here’s a new kid on the Naramata Bench playground.

Lock and Worth partners Matthew Sherlock and Ross Hackworth (lock and worth—get it?) know a good vineyard when they see it, so when the old Poplar Grove vineyard came on the market four years ago, they jumped. Ross, who owns Nichol Vineyard, the northernmost Naramata Winery, and Matthew who works for Ross and is also a wine importer, make their mission clear—make very good wines (definition: wines they like to drink) but know they can’t please everyone.

“We produced only 1200 cases in 2014, from a pretty awesome vintage, so we are never going to be a mass market wine,” Matt says. “It’s exciting for Ross to be able to push the boundaries in making our wines. Because we are small producers are vintages might be completely different.

Our customers are people who celebrate differences.”

At the wine shop, which they share with Gitta Pedersen’s Poplar Grove Cheese, visitors will find 2013 Cabernet Franc Square I, 2014 Merlot, 2014 Cabernet Franc Rosé, 2014 Sauvignon Blanc + Semillon and a very small quantity of 2014 Semillon. All wines are single vineyard productions.

Most of the Lock and Worth wines are unfined and unfiltered. For Ross, natural winemaking is a priority, so natural ferments with no added yeasts are used wherever possible. There is no questioning the commitment the owners have to quality, but if you are looking for middle market wine that is manipulated to be predictable the same despite variations in the growing season from year to year, it’s probably best to move on. ~ Lorne Eckersley

he Poplar Grove Winery tasting room is gearing up for the Summer season.

Throughout the year, Poplar Grove is open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm; starting in July it will be open 10am to 9pm.

The newest addition to the tasting room wine line up is the Poplar Grove Pinot Gris 2014. Released March 1, the Pinot Gris tastes like Okanagan sunshine in a glass.

Chef Bruno Terroso of Vanilla Pod Restaurant has created menu items that go well with Pinot Gris, including Steelhead Trout with warm potato and spinach salad,

prosciutto and white balsamic vinaigrette.

Other new Poplar Grove releases include Chardonnay 2014, Merlot 2011 and Blanc de Noir 2014, now available at the winery.

For the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival, Poplar Grove will host live music for Roll Out the Barrel May 9, 1pm to 4pm. Poplar Grove joins fellow Naramata Bench wineries to offer barrel samples of upcoming red wine releases. Join Stefan Arnason, winemaker, for a taste of the future!

The Vanilla Pod Restaurant will feature a five-course wine dinner, paired with award-winning Poplar Grove wines for $99 during the Spring Okanagan Wine Festival. This menu is available nightly from 5pm, Friday May 1–Sunday May 12.

ith crisp features of fresh fruit such as peach, melon and green apple tingling on your tongue, Hillside Winery’s Un-Oaked 2014 Pinot Gris delivers spring in your glass. Along with other releases, it is testament to the dividends of Hillside’s winemaking philosophy in using only the best grapes available and working with Mother Nature to guide the wine through natural phases rather than over manipulating it.

The Gewürztraminer, too, heralds warmer weather with fragrances of honeysuckle, tropical fruits and ginger sure to enhance scallops, Spot Prawns and spicy dishes. Watch for the signature Muscat Ottonel to be released during the Spring Okanagan Wine Festival. Think picnics and Thai food with notes of citrus, apricot, spice and everything nice like a floral bouquet. Another spring release, the rosé is bright with notes of wild flowers, cherries and field berries on the palate – a perfect patio sipper.

The Pinot Noir is an ambassador for the Okanagan’s quality in this varietal. It is juicy, with raspberry and strawberry and a lingering complexity of herbs and spice. Since 2006, the signature Mosaic is comprised entirely of Naramata Bench fruit and usually a Bordeaux blend of Merlot,

Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Absent from the Mosaic 2010 is the Cabernet Franc after winemaker Kathy Malone deemed that variety shy of Hillside’s standards that year.

Such unwavering dedication to the bounty of the Naramata Bench is evident in the wines and the Bistro’s cuisine and Hillside’s staff. When asked about any changes to the core team, Lisa Baxter-Burke, sales and marketing manager, proudly pointed out that after working there seven years she is still the newbie.

She smiles, “We are all excited by our only new addition – Chef Rob Cordonier and wife Melissa’s baby boy, Everett Robson Cordonier.”

he Vanilla P o d Restaurant is into its third year at its new location at Poplar Grove Winery.

SHADES OF LINEN – NATURAL, CLASSY FASHIONS

T

he fashion focus for Naramata’s Shades of Linen this year seems to be black and white, in stripes and polka dots, with splashes of orange and lime green, according to owner Diane Jensen. “We are also carrying a line from Australia called Banana Blue, which is 100% linen,” she says.

Popular accessories include black and white pearl necklaces and bracelets; those at Shades of Linen are all made by a local artisan.

“Scarves are still a must,” says Diane.

“This year they seem to be larger, like shawls, which makes them more versatile.”

Pants are “a bit of everything” this

year and include both slim and wide leg styles. “They’re nice for layering.”

Linen is always the focus at this Naramata boutique, which has been in business since 2001. Shades of Linen has increased its men’s line this year, which includes long and short sleeve linen shirts, as well as t-shirts and shorts.

“The more linen is worn, the better it feels,” says Diane. “The wrinkling is part of the uniqueness of the fibre.

espite the phenomenally successful launch in 2014 of the SKAHA Vineyards wines with native horse themed labels, customers visiting Kraze Legz Winery will be pleased to know that the Speakeasy theme in the wine shop is staying. “We know people visiting the tasting room love the Roaring Twenties labels and décor, so its hard to mess with it too much, but one should expect a horse or two in the Speakeasy this year,” says coowner Gerry Thygesen, who runs the operation with his wife/moll (old gangster term), Sue. Things might seem a little more relaxed at the winery than they were a year ago, though. There will be no new label this year, after the SKAHA Vineyards label knocked it out of the park for Kraze Legz in 2014.

So, what is new? A refreshed wine shop and tasting room, more good – make that very good – wines and it seems one thing new is one thing that is actually just getting older, the vineyard site in Kaleden is turn-

ing out to be outstanding, moreso as vines mature. “With each new vintage we’re seeing even more intensity in the fruit from the maturing vines, a reflection of the unique ‘terroir’ here and this is what we believe differentiates our wines.”

cused and a little less floral overall than last year’s vintage. The result is a wine with beautiful aromas of green apples and fresh herbs, a full flavour, and a long crisp finish that will last until the crickets start chirping.

16% of the 2014 Viognier was fermented with the skins in stainless steel tanks - just like a red wine - to give it a bigger body and deeper, fuller aromatics. An early sample of this wine yielded exquisite aromas of peaches, apricots, and flowers. Made with 100% Similkameen fruit, only 200 cases of this wine were produced.

Two intensely aromatic wines are also in the lineup again this year; the 2014 Gewürztraminer and the 2014 Riesling round out the whites at Eau Vivre this summer.

orbidden Fruit Winery is celebrating its 10th anniversary making award-winning wines with 100% certified organic fruit from its orchards and vineyard.

Wines of Canada declared Forbidden Fruit one of the top 15 wineries to watch out for in 2015. Winepress Northwest Platinum Judging awarded them the sole Double-Platinum for a fruit wine (2013 Caught–Apricot Mistelle) and the only DoublePlatinum for a BC red (2011 Earth Series Merlot), making it the first Pacific Northwest winery to win top prizes in both fruit and grape wine categories at a single competition.

here are many reasons to make a trip to Cawston to visit Seven Stones Winery this season, including special events and a brand new wine shop!

The existing wine shop was renovated in the spring and greatly expanded with a larger tasting bar and more retail space. While the previous bar could only accommodate eight people, the new horseshoe shaped bar is able to host 20 people with lots of room left over to browse. The atmosphere is now bright and open without losing the cozy ambiance of the old wine shop. The new vaulted ceiling over the bar perfectly mimics

the shape of the ceiling in the wine caves. Colin Wilson, who designed and built the caves, also designed the new wine shop and made sure to keep that key feature consistent. The new wine shop also has a new door on the west side of the building to access the deck with an unobstructed view of the Similkameen Valley. This will very likely become one of the most photographed winery locations in the Similkameen.

EXTRA AGING TIME FOR FAIRVIEW’S FINE WINES

airview Cellars is expanding, but not in the normal way.

Owner Bill Eggert is wants to make sure his wines show their best in the wine shop and has been taking steps to age the wine prior to releasing them. Of course, fans of Fairview’s wines already know that they have an amazing potential for aging. Bill has been demonstrating this in his wine shop over the past couple of years by featuring tastings of special back vintages. Not every winery can do this, but Fairview can.

Extra aging means extra storage space and that is what Bill has been

hard at work doing over the winter.

Backfilling has begun on the new underground wine cellar which is perfect for storing wines until they are ready for release. The Bear 2012 will be the first vintage partially held back about six months. Subsequent vintages of reds will be held back a little longer each year until all of the reds are more matured at release.

New this year is a beautiful Chardonnay, another white to the portfolio along with the Sauvignon Blanc.

nother spring is upon us and it has brought another round of medals for the wines of Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery. The Great Northwest Wine Competition is held annually at the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River, Oregon. This year it drew over 1200 entries from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia.

The Gehringer Brothers 2014 Dry Rock Sauvignon Blanc brought home the title of Best White Wine. This wine is a delicate, pale gold in the glass, with a nose that is classic Sauvignon Blanc; sharp citrus and gooseberry. In the mouth, this wine has a terrifically firm structure with bright acidity. Fresh lemon juice and pink grapefruit zest with a mineral note are delightful components and the finish that disappears to leave behind a clean mouthfeel; enlivening.

If you’re a fan of the Classic Riesling, keep your eyes open. The winery has started bottling it in an Alsatian bottle rather than the standard Bordeaux bottle.

uring the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival, Burrowing Owl’s Sonora Room will feature daily tasting menus crafted

by Chef Damian Mischkinis. As always, the restaurant’s cuisine will showcase products available from the winery’s local suppliers. Many of the ingredients in the Sonora Room dishes come from a nearby organic farm called Le Petit Clos, which grows produce exclusively for the restaurant’s use. ust as they had hoped, the mineralrich, sloping, gravelly site of their vineyard is already having a noticeable impact on their wine, River Stone Estate Winery co-owners Ted and Lorraine Kane agree.

“Our wines have a sense of place that comes from this dusty, chalky, earthy, mineral soil,” Ted says. On a March Saturday after a two-day bottling marathon (that morphed into a teambuilding event by their sales rep from Lifford Wine and Spirits) Ted and Lorraine were all smiles—1500 cases of wine safely in the bottle and a new season on the horizon.

In the wine shop this month customers will find new vintages of Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc with only 60 cases each from what Ted describes as a great harvest. “I’m really happy with the wines, and I have been experimenting with different yeasts that help bring out the flavours produced by our vines.” Expect a

more tropical, offdry Splash, with notes of passion fruit and lychee, and a deepcoloured Malbec Rosé that has a hint of residual sugar to balance the tannins.

After a successful jump into the local farmers market scene last year, River Stone will continue to have a personal presence at markets throughout the area, which Ted and Lorraine see as a great opportunity to introduce their wines to a new audience. Fans of the Oliver winery will be eagerly anticipating the release later in the year of reds like Cabernet Franc and Stones Throw, a premium Bordeaux blend that includes Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. CELEBRATION TIME AT TINHORN CREEK

T

inhorn Creek Vineyards has good news to share. The Golden Mile sub-appellation—the first new sub-appellation in the Okanagan Valley—has been approved and will now appear on the labels of wines from 11 wineries in The Golden Mile, including Tinhorn Creek.

To celebrate this, as well as the Spring Wine Festival, Tinhorn is releasing its new wines: Pinot Gris 2014, Oldfield Series Rosé 2014 and Gewürztraminer 2014.

Tinhorn Creek will be heralding late spring and summer with a plethora of events. Not to be missed are their outdoor concerts; coming up May 23rd is Rich Hope & His Blue Ridge Rangers and the John Welsh Band June 27th ($30 per concert per person).

For the Spring Wine Festival, Tinhorn Creek is hosting the Hops, Grapes and Grub Dinner, May 1st at Miradoro Restaurant. Beer from Cannery Brewing and Tinhorn Creek’s wine will be paired with a three-course dinner.

I

t’s all in the family at Adega Estate Winery and Racyne Farinha, tasting room manager, is proud to be taking on the responsibility for the customer experience. Appropriately, Father’s Day this June will see the release of two very special wines, one named after the full version of her father’s first name “Alfredo” which is a special reserve selection of Merlot. Her uncle Alex Nunes’ eponymous reserve wine “Alexandrino” is a similarly special selection of Syrah. Both wines will be available for the first time at their Customer Appreciation Day that is held annually on Father’s Day. There were only about 100 cases produced of each of these special wines so they will likely not be around long.

Racyne’s grandparents also have their names on some special and unique wines. A beautifully bright and refreshing summer

wine was named to honour her grandmother, Felicidade. A unique red blend is named in honour of her grandfather Manuel, who originally purchased the land in 1966 where her father Fred and his sister Maria grew up. This is the same land where the Adega Estate Winery is now located.

The 2012 reds will be released in the early spring. These include the single variety Malbec, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc along with the Quarteto Tinto, a Bordeaux-style blend. These wines can be tasted at the bar or purchased by the glass to enjoy on their partially shaded patio with a stunning southwest view over Osoyoos and the valley. And there is more than just wine to enjoy-a deli cooler offers an assortment of meats and cheeses to purchase to make the occasion complete. ~ Luke Whittall
