It’s no secret that the Okanagan Valley is home to many of Canada’s most internationally celebrated wineries, Tinhorn Creek being one of them. Established in 1993, the winery has been making its mark for almost three decades.

Perched on the Golden Mile Bench in Oliver, BC, Tinhorn Creek offers panoramic valley views that span all the way to Osoyoos Lake. From inside the tasting room or outside on the covered patio, visitors can gaze upon the picturesque landscape that makes the southern Okanagan region truly unique.

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO HIKE

For those who might want to work up a thirst and an appetite, the winery backs onto the Golden Mile Stamp Mill Trail. The trail is one of the only remaining access points to the Mount Kobau Range and takes hikers to historic century-old stamp mill ruins. The path leading from the winery up to the trailhead takes you past Tinhorn’s Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Muscat and Malbec plots, as well as the new developing vineyard sites at the far west of the property, which will be dedicated to Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. The hike offers stunning views of Tinhorn’s property, Osoyoos Lake and the South Okanagan Valley.

Once back from your hike, it’s time for wine.

Whether you’re enjoying your wine flight on their sunlit covered patio overlooking the Valley, seated below in front of the demonstration vineyard, or having a bottle picnicking in the amphitheatre, you can take in the impressive views and customize your experience at Tinhorn Creek.

NEW RELEASES AND EXPERIENCES

While visiting this spring, be sure to try Tinhorn Creek’s newest releases. They will be featuring their highly anticipated Rosé, along with their new Blanc de Blanc Sparkling and famous Pinot Gris.

Starting on the May long weekend (May 21–23), Tinhorn Creek will officially offer their Library Lounge Experience.

Held in an intimate setting above the winery’s cellar,

surrounded by Tinhorn’s collection of vintage library bottles, guests will be immersed in the nearly-30-year-old history of Tinhorn Creek. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy a flight of wines focusing on a particular vintage or wine varietal, while learning about the aging potential of wine.

Also starting May long weekend is Tinhorn Creek’s Guided Tour, where guests will embark on a walk around the beautiful estate. While learning about the winery’s history, guests will be shown the vineyards and barrel cellars. After touring the property, guests will be treated to a carefully selected wine flight so they can transfer the knowledge they’ve learned to the wine itself. This fully immersive experience is the best way to learn about the entire winemaking process, from the growing of the grapes to barreling. You’ll want to bring your thirst and your questions for this experience!

Visitors can now elevate their wine experience further by opting to add food pairings to their wine flight,

provided by Miradoro Restaurant. Discover how awardwinning executive chef Jeff Van Geest’s Mediterraneanstyle cuisine pairs beautifully with Tinhorn Creek’s wine, enhancing the flavours of both the wine and the food.

SUSTAINABILITY

Miradoro Restaurant is dedicated to sourcing local products wherever possible, tying into Tinhorn Creek’s continued leadership in sustainable practices.

One of the new sustainability initiatives at Tinhorn Creek is their EchoTrack bat initiative. The southern Okanagan is home to 14 different species of bats, one being the pallid bat. One of the rarest mammals in British Columbia—and in Canada—it can only be found in the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valley. The winery is working to help draw the native bat population back to the area by planting native vegetation and species to encourage pollination and fertilization by the bats.

The Tinhorn Creek Tasting Room is open seven days a week from 10 am to 7 pm. Miradoro Restaurant is also open daily, from 11:30 am to 9 pm. The winery strongly encourages reservations, but will do their best to accommodate walk-ins.

Spring Asparagus Soup

R E C IP E

INGREDIENTS: 2 lbs fresh asparagus *lightly blanched and chopped.

Reserve the tips for garnish 1.5 cup fresh spinach leaves sea salt pepper ¼ lb (1 stick) butter 1 medium onion-small dice 2 stalks celery-small dice 1 small leek-sliced 6 white mushrooms-sliced 4 cloves garlic-minced 3 pc bay leaves ½ tsp black peppercorns 4 sprigs mint 3 cups vegetable stock 1 cup whipping cream

DIRECTIONS: In a large pot melt butter over medium heat until starts to slightly bubble.

Add onion, celery, leek, mushrooms, and garlic.

Cook until vegetables soften, stirring to prevent any browning. Reduce heat if too hot. Approx. 5-7 min.

Add bay leaves, peppercorns, mint, stock, and cream. Mix well. Gently bring soup just short of a boil and reduce to a very low simmer. Partially cover pot with lid and continue cooking approx.

30-40 min. Stir occasionally.

Remove from heat and strain into a pot or container through a large fine mesh strainer.

Vegetables can be discarded. Get blender ready.

With soup mixture still hot put 1/3 of blanched asparagus and some spinach into blender. Pour in 1/3 of hot liquid. Start blender on low and gradually turn to high and blend until very smooth.

Be careful when first starting to blend. Strain again through fine mesh strainer.

Repeat this process in thirds until all asparagus and spinach and liquid are blended.

Whisk soup and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Heat to serve or chill until use. Garnish with asparagus tips.

This soup is also excellent when served chilled.

More Malbec-forward than the last vintage, this Winemaker Michael Alexander fruity Rosé is 57 per cent Malbec and 43 per cent Photo by Kevin Trowbridge Syrah. Watermelon, cherry, raspberry, and strawberry tantalize your nose. On your palate it is surprisingly dry, with light to medium body and soft acidity, revealing tart cherry, watermelon, red grapefruit, and strawberry notes. Its medium-length clean finish ensures it’s perfect on its own or paired with delicate flavours such as pulled pork tacos, salmon burgers or a spicy tuna poké bowl.

PURITY PERSONIFIED IN WHITE WINES

Michael notes, “2021 threw a few curve balls, such as the heat dome, and sunshine obscured by wildfire smoke. We’ve detected no smoke taint; however, we did experience our fruit yielding less juice. Production was down while the flavours had greater concentration and intensity.”

The 2021 Estate Grown Biodynamic Riesling is just off dry with vivacious fresh pear, apple, ginger, and sweet citrus blossom notes. Zippy acidity and minerality balance the natural sweetness, leading to a long, clean finish. Spicy Thai curries or soft, rich cheeses complement it beautifully.

The 2021 Estate Grown Biodynamic Muscat exhibits those classic, delectable Okanagan qualities that place it in the top 10 Muscats in the world perennially. Orange blossom, bee pollen and ripe peach aromas hint of the gentle acidity and off-dry lemon and lime with lingering grapefruit. The one-anda-half-hour experience will take guests on a guided tour of Red Rooster’s cellars, and will discuss blending, barrel aging, fermenting, and questions such as “What does ‘sur lie’ mean?” or “What is carbonic maceration?” Rest assured that you will leave with new knowledge. This hands-on experience will take place every Thursday during July and August, with each week focusing on a different theme, such as the difference between Syrah and Shiraz, or why Pinot Noir is known as the “heartbreak grape.” Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or taking your first sips, there is something for everyone to take away.

their own wine. They continue to consult with Pascal Madevon. His fine palate is engaged in decision-making as the process migrates on-site with Wilbert as lead winemaker.

Known for flagship Rieslings, Four Shadows scored high points and amassed medals for its distinctive wines. Riesling is released in classic, dry and sparkling. Plus, you’ll find Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Rosé, and now, Zweigelt and Merlot Reserve.

“We are excited to release our 2019 Merlot Reserve,” Joka said. “Narrowing down from our 16 barrels of Merlot, we engaged our staff to taste five barrels along with Pascal. The top two barrels were blended as a reserve and aged in French oak.”

With red fruits and berries on the nose, the bright, full-bodied Merlot Reserve presents dried plum, raspberry, a hint of smokiness and chocolate on the palate.

This wine received Gold from the BC Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards 2021.

MAY/JUNE 2022 With colours ranging from light blush to an inviting pink, rosés are sure to please. For those of you new to the wonderful world of wine, rosé wines are made by crushing the grapes, skin on, and leaving the skins in for a few hours. That’s what gives the wine its beautiful blush or pink hue. They can lean towards dry or sweet. Most of these pretty pink wines are fresh and fruity with hints of melon, cherries and raspberry. If you lean towards a drier wine, look for one made with a Pinot Noir or Syrah.

Darcy Nybo I love spring because it means the new releases are here! There are new varietals and new vintages of old favourites waiting to be revealed.

One of my favourite parts of spring, aside from the lack of snow and the end of long dark days, is tasting the latest offerings of my favourite wines. White, sparkling, and the ever-popular rosé wines are out there, waiting for you to discover or rediscover them. The anticipation of will it or won’t it be like last year’s? dangles like the proverbial carrot for wine lovers.

British Columbia has an abundance of great rosés that differ from winery to winery. When you find one you love, it’s a good bet the next year’s vintage will be just as good, and possibly better.

To be quite honest, I have yet to taste a rosé that’s disappointed me.

Then there’s the anticipation of the new releases of white wines. I do so love a good, robust red in the fall and winter; however, come spring and summer, I want a light and cheerful white to enjoy while relaxing on the deck. I suggest you imagine yourself somewhere inviting outdoors when you taste this year’s offerings. It amazes me how a wine can taste so different when enjoyed on a patio in the fresh air and sunshine.

Then there are the sparkling wines. Every year I am reminded how delicious our BC sparkling wines are. While many think sparkling wines are for winter and holiday celebrations, they are great yearround. They are fabulous on their own as a patio sipper and go great with pretty much everything from cheese to shellfish and salmon, and veggies and mushrooms to desserts. And don’t forget— sparkling wines range from the whitest of whites to the pinkest of rosés, and each has its own unique flavour palate.

While you are out there supporting our BC wineries, make sure you taste some of their reds too. You never know when a well-bodied and balanced red might be needed in the coming months.

OS OYOOS A SEASON OF ADVENTURE IS BLOSSOMING IN THE OKANAGAN BLAKE ALLEN

Spring has truly sprung in the Okanagan Valley! FESTIVALS AND FARMERS’ MARKET

There’s a festival for almost everyone here. For example, those looking to get out into nature can partake in any number of guided hikes, tours and events being put on as part of the Meadowlark Nature Festival (May 20–23).

Be sure to leave space on your calendar for Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, as Osoyoos has plenty of immersive Indigenous experiences to enjoy. Stay and enjoy the Osoyoos Cherry Fiesta and Fireworks Show on July 1.

The blossoming of the spring season also means the blossoming of the region’s rich agricultural bounty, which is on full display at the Osoyoos Farmers’ Market, running every Saturday at Town Hall Square from 9 am to 1 pm starting May 7.

WINERIES GALORE

With more than 50 wineries between two celebrated wine regions (Oliver-Osoyoos and the Similkameen Valley) all within a 20-minute drive of Osoyoos, travellers can hit the scenic backroads and tour many vineyards during their visit, sampling many different wines and grape varietals.

The spring season is ideal for visiting wineries as it marks the start of the spring wine releases and the return of Wine Club Dinners. Guests will be first in line to sample the newest vintages and varietals with several new lines of bubbly wine popping into the tasting rooms this year, accompanying the region’s famous diversity of reds and rosés! If wine isn’t your fancy, Osoyoos also has something for beer, cider and spirit aficionados too.

Tumbleweed Spirits focuses on small-batch spirits. Their cherry moonshine is made with local South Okanagan cherries—or, for the brave, the Fireweed Whiskey will surely knock your socks off.

There’s also North Basin Brewing Co., located in downtown Osoyoos and offering local suds like The Ditch IPA, named after the infamous irrigation canal that turned the South Okanagan into the lush array of orchards and vineyards that it is today.

And of course, with its abundance of apples, Osoyoos has several cideries nearby, like Orchard Hill Estate Cidery, Bordertown, and Maverick, serving sips of the South Okanagan’s favourite fruit.
