Report 2015

Report 2015 We are now on our ninth report, this time with the most important projects we worked on in 2015. Here we talk about how our approach has evolved, with ground-breaking experiences with exceptional personalities who have come together and interacted in our processes of creating and developing design. This was the case in the “precision pastry-making developed with the master chef Iginio Massari, an authentic icon in international patisserie. Another aspect was the renewed interest in thematic design – a real challenge for the future evolution of design. Enjoy the read! Susanna Brugnoli and Marcello Cutino

THEMATIC DESIGN DESIGN BORN OF EMOTION Thematic design is an important aspect of BCF research, which has built up 30 years of experience. It is an authentic challenge for the future design of objects. Those things that are linked to emotions and stories, which are where the design of these products comes from, become formidable means for opening up a new vision of objects and of the way they relate to people. Here you will find a brief interview published on Romeoegiuliettadesign.it, which illustrates the methodology behind it. What do you mean by thematic design? In its broadest sense, design is not limited just to the idea of a functional, contemporary object, but includes all aspects of the cultural identities we take inspiration from. If we consider that the idea behind the design of a product cannot by definition be traced back to a particular style, then design contains all the possible facets of the all the countless cultural and emotional ideas that man has used ever since the dawn of design. How does BCF interpret it? For many years BCF Design has been exploring thematic design, which takes inspiration from a recognisable theme, which may itself come from personal life. This can be seen in the theme linked to emotion, for example, as emotional design, or in themes linked to memory, as developed by Romeo Giulietta Design. Design goes beyond the purely functional aspects of a product and explores the affinities and feelings involved in the personal, intimate world of each of us, creating an affective bond with the user that may then become part of the story. And the true value of this approach is this story, which each of us can find within the forms of these objects. How does Romeo e Giulietta Design fit into what BCF has to offer? Romeo e Giulietta Design is a tribute to the love of memories, a way of bringing sensations, images and past affections to life through an object. Those who approach these objects can recognise their characteristics, sharing them and making them their own, and then experiencing them in their everyday lives.

Tell me what sink you have and I’ll tell you where you’re from For over 25 years BCF has worked on the design of the kitchen sink, mainly under the Franke label, developing over 30 products, some of them among the greatest bestsellers on the market. Here we should like to reflect on this experience, offering some considerations. Five reflections on the kitchen sink: history, place, character, sign and affinity. History: how a sink is born As a kitchen accessory, the sink first appeared in the 1920s from a rationalist approach to home furnishing. Stainless steel, a symbol of a new technological frontier, was introduced for the first time at the World Expo in Frankfurt in 1926. These were the years when the famous furnishings and seats in curved metal tubes, which are still fashionable today, first began to emerge. Place: tell me what sink you have and I’ll tell you where you’re from The functional structure of the kitchen sink is closely tied to local habits. The model with two basins and a drip tray, for example, is more widely used in Italy, while the one with one and a half basins is more likely to be found in northern Europe. Models with round basins are preferred in Spain, and very large basins are normally found in Greece. Character: show me how you use your sink and I’ll tell you what you’re like The way a sink is used says a great deal about the user and his or her habits and style. The sink is a sort of indicator of one’s relationship with the kitchen and with food. We might think, for example, of the pictures we often see in films of the untidy bachelor: the camera dwells on piles of plates stacked up in the sink, still waiting to be washed. At the other extreme, a housewife is often shown cleaning the most hidden corners with almost manic determination. From this point of view, the sink helps reveal one’s personality. Sign: stainless steel and the way it communicates For the sink, stainless steel is a sheet on which to communicate with signs. Whether impressed or in relief, the sign can demarcate the space for the corners, highlighting or creating details that together tell a story. Affinity: the sink at the centre of style and functionality in the kitchen The sink is a catalyst of the styles and choices that revolve around the world of the kitchen: its power is in the way it is deeply rooted in culinary tradition, and its future is in its ability to evolve as lifestyles change.

2015 PROJECTS

The visions that featured in BCF projects in 2015 for Ghidini were the Precision Pastry-Making implements, in collaboration with Iginio Massari, and the EasyPro corkscrew. The Nova series of pans for the Moneta brand were a distillation of technical innovation and design. Then there was the unveiling of the Cipria unit, a product of BCF thematic design, and the entire communication strategy for Dolceland pastries. Lastly, we should like to mention no fewer than four awards in international design competitions for products designed by BCF: 2 products mentioned in the ADI Index, 1 mention in Good Design Australia and one in Design Plus in Frankfurt. These honours are clear confirmation of the commitment and research of BCF.

Vision for Ghidini

“Precision Pastry-Making Iginio Massari’s Precision Pastry-Making is the new collection of implements designed for the world of pastry making, created by Ghidini under the guidance of an outstanding mentor, the master pastry-maker Iginio Massari. This major project involved every design sector of the studio, creating an authentic new vision. Together with the design of almost 50 special utensils and instruments, the task involved coordinated work on the corporate image, involving the logo, the packaging, the catalogue, a video and a dedicated website.

The design approved by Iginio Massari Those who know Iginio Massari know just how demanding and strict he can be, and the same criterion was adopted in the development and definition of each item in the collection. Design, functionality and consistency across the collection were carefully examined by the master pastry chef and the result was quite amazing: a whole panorama of products that speak with one voice, like the instruments of an orchestra all tuned up and ready for the finest composition.

Communication that creates a relationship

INITIATIVES

Two initiatives of 2015 that are particularly worthy of note are membership of the Il Buon Gusto Veneto network of companies in the agri-food sector and the formation of the BCFactory workgroup, in which young talents interact to create the future.

Il Buon Gusto Veneto BCF joined Il Buon Gusto Veneto, a network of companies linked to the agri-food sector. Membership of this network is of strategic importance for BCF, which in recent years has seen a significant part of its operations concentrating on the kitchen: both for the design of equipment and implements, and in the communication of important brands in the sector. Il Buon Gusto Veneto is a contact for BCF and a window onto the world of consumer products in the agri-food sector which evolves as it changes, influencing and modifying the relationship between consumers and eating habits, as well as everything else that revolves around them. The Made in Italy label and the Italian style that is an inherent part of Il Buon Gusto Veneto is key to increasing and developing new values and solutions for BCF clients. As partners in the marketing and communications sector, it has developed the network’s website, which is crucial for its interaction with its target market.
