10 Report 2016

Report 2016 Celebrating the tenth annual BCF Report gives us an opportunity to make a little assessment of the projects we have worked on in such a complex and change-filled decade. At the same time, as is now tradition, we present our most significant projects in 2016 for which the development of the vision was already under way, such as the one in the pastry industry, as well as important experiences in new sectors, like that of supplementary medicine and the new frontiers of disposable products for professionals.

Enjoy the read! Susanna Brugnoli and Marcello Cutino

Ten issues of the BCF Report Ten years of history, laying the foundations for the future. The first BCF Report was published in 2008 with a description of the works of 2007. This was the year before what was to be one of the worst economic crises of the past hundred years. A crisis that coincided with changes in many areas, including the perception of product value. One of these was the launch and development of the smartphone, which has best symbolised the changes in our way of living over the past decade. Over the years, the Report has illustrated the development of our approach to design through the creation of visions, which are entirely integrated projects that have taken shape over many years. Here I should like to recall those involving Glem Progetti, the vision for Moneta products, tapware with Ponsi and also the one for retreaded tyres for Marangoni. These are just some of those that have constituted real turning points in the companies concerned and a real step towards innovation, not just in terms of product performance but also as a holistic approach that permeates the entire company. Looking at one’s own past in order to reach out to the future is what these reflections are all about. The Report is the story of a passion that has involved not just the people who have worked at BCF but also, and especially, those in the various companies concerned: it is the description of a process that has evolved over the years, allowing these companies to acquire sensitivity and a fondness for innovation that is increasingly necessary when navigating towards future horizons. The images that describe this journey illustrate a desire that has become reality and that, through its realisation, has influenced its own future.

1986-2016 Celebrating thirty years of collaboration between Alluflon and BCF The collaboration between BCF and Alluflon turns thirty in 2016. It was in 1986 that Alluflon took over Moneta, the best-known brand in Italy in the pans sector, and that year BCF started work on designing the products and their communication. It is a privilege to be able to illustrate such a long partnership, which in terms of the number of products developed and the timespan involved, has had great impact not just on the image of Moneta but also on the culinary habits of the Italians. This work is the reflection of a society that has evolved and that, over the years, has seen the approach to cooking and to its contexts change drastically. From the closed, traditionalist approach that was still very much part of Italian culture in the eighties, it shifted to one in which foreign cuisines were gradually discovered. Starting with Europe and then moving further afield, there was also the spread of restaurants characteristic of distant lands, through to the present day with cuisine by the protagonists: chefs, the true kings and queens of a new culinary art. Looking back over the design of products developed in these years, it is clear to see how they are a reflection of our own ambitions and expectations. Their story reveals to us the very essence of what we are, always in search of a balance between new needs, new functionalities, and new styles. The illustrations tell the story of this journey through time.

Design as Cosmos: the BCF approach. Creating a vision and going beyond – beyond form, beyond emotion, ultimately reaching a shared language. This methodology views product design as the element at the centre of a universe, the mechanisms of which are subject to a constantly evolving logic. The study of this universe is revealed by a language that the product itself expresses in its complex, diversified relationship with the world.

Critical interpretation: The process starts with a critical understanding of the design briefing. This is an important moment, for it identifies the values on which all later developments will be built.

Relationships: The website, videos and social networks are the spaces where the product enters into a relationship with its public, generating the premises for the future in the feedback it receives.

The methodology in 5 moves What this process creates is a state of perennial dynamism between the various areas of the design process, which finds itself in an equilibrium dictated by the interrelationships and the inputs and outputs that come about as the project takes shape. Approaching design with this methodology is like breathing and, at every step of the way, understanding the state of interaction, and thus of life, that the project forms with its world. This is the cosmic aspect. The salient aspect of this methodology is that of creating a sort of general framework where the new consistencies and balances that are brought about can be governed.

Character: The elements that give rise to the project, such as the name, the brand image, the proposed product design and style of communication are identified as though they were its DNA.

Product: The development of the design calls for the right interpretation of the form for the technical requirements and shapes indicated in the briefing.

Communication: The packaging, display units, trade fair stands and documentation are all instruments for presenting the product, always consistent with the policies identified in the previous stages.

2016 PROJECTS

2016 can be considered as a year of continuity, with the continuation of the vision for “Precision Pastry-Making”, with further instruments studied together with Chef Iginio Massari. Then there was the development of the vision for Moneta, with the presentation of three griddles, and a new image for Marangoni presented at the international fair in Essen. At the same time, two new challenging projects have been launched in innovative sectors – a design operation in the field of integrative medicine, and one for the production of disposable containers in the professional catering sector. Lastly, 2016 saw the development of a vision of “thematic design”, which took material form in the presentation of the Petit bathroom furniture unit for Mia Italia. This is a theme that is gaining increasing interest in ever-evolving markets.

Vision for Marangoni “Impulse”

Impulse is the name of the concept, created by BCF, that conveys the idea of Marangoni’s drive towards innovation. It represents the new philosophy of the group, which places the customer firmly at the centre of its approach. The new philosophy was presented at the international Reifen 2016 fair in Essen. The project involved all departments of the studio in a vision-based approach that led to the creation of a powerful and coherent corporate image for the group. The design, construction and installation of the stand, the creation of the graphics and videos, and of multimedia material, were meticulously studied to maximise the effectiveness of Marangoni’s presence at one of the key events in the world of industrial tyres.

Web and Video Communication The creation of the videos illustrates the complete project. Multimedia materials were a key element in conveying the messages within the stand, and in recreating the experience after the event by illustrating and sharing the work online.

The animated infographic created for Impulse expresses the key features of the Marangoni philosophy, graphically rendering the concept of the impulse that Marangoni conveys to the partners in the group to achieve the very best levels of performance.

Stand Design The design of the stand recalls the dynamic forms of impulses. The roof, in the form of a staggered plane, creates the idea of movement and power that the Marangoni group wishes to convey to its partners.

The vision for Truekeg

Truekeg comes to life with its constantly evolving story A new image now accompanies Truekeg, a young company specialised in the production and supply of disposable kegs for professional use. The story of the production of this remarkable technology is the starting point for the creation of its visual identity, by means of the people who accompany the tale. Truekeg is the lead character and title of a comic strip that will expand over time with new stories and challenges, but it will always be immediately recognisable for the actors who are inextricably linked to the life of the protagonist. An image that makes its narration the best challenge to compete on the markets of tomorrow in a way that is always up to the minute and dynamic.

Draw off the future Easy-to-use and lighter than steel kegs, coupled with low environmental impact – these are the winning features of this new technology.

THE SYSTEM OCCUPIES LITTLE SPACE, freeing up the production area

MAXIMUM productivity with constant assistance

THE PERFECT SYSTEM

NO WASTE, with size optimised for EuroPallets

Technology and services that make a difference

Greater efficiency and greater traceability in less time

Visual identity in the form of storytelling Truekeg is a young company that produces disposable kegs for distributing beer, and it provides all the equipment and services necessary for using these containers. Compared with the traditional distribution of beer in steel kegs, this technology makes it possible to drastically reduce environmental impact by reducing maintenance of the keg, which requires cleaning with chemical agents, as well as logistics management. Since this is a new technology, it was considered important, when defining the image of the company, to tell the story of the product from beginning to end, since it is a totally recyclable, disposable product. This life cycle was termed “The Perfect System”, precisely because of its virtuous nature. All this suggested that the new image should include

LESS WEIGHT, less space, easier to handle

KEEPS THE TASTE THE SAME, down to the last drop

a story in pictures that would explain the life cycle of a Truekeg barrel, like in a comic strip. The characters we meet in this comic become endorsers of the image of Truekeg. What is singular about this image is precisely the role that the characters have in defining the image of Truekeg. They tell the story and, at the same time, they are what identifies the image – like this, the story of the product becomes its own visual identity. The key feature of the design is that it is linked to the story, which means creating an image that can evolve. This means that any new stories told in the future will always be instantly recognisable and inextricably linked to Truekeg. The story comes to life in a little video in which the characters draw themselves on the wall, like in a work of street art.

Product vision for Mia Italia Petit as in Petit Bijoux

Another result of BCF’s research into thematic design is the creation of Petit, a furniture unit in a provocative, excessive, ironic style that reflects the sumptuousness of late eighteenth-century monarchies.

A Game of Seduction In its proportions, Petit is a unit that recalls the proportions and classic elegance of Louis XVI furniture, combining its contemporary essence with the ability to transform, typical of the game of seduction. Elephants, classicism and allure are the salient features of this model. The structural units that form the panels, with their coordinated metal trimmings, form a unit with a profound and exquisite personality that is allembracing, like a haute couture outfit.

Grilling in All Its Forms

Each of the three grill pans has its own special shape and an equally special coating technology for the cooking area. The first, circular one is characterised by the use of Artech Stone, the Moneta non-stick coating with mineral reinforcement, which makes for truly tasty dishes. The rectangular one uses Protection Base, the latest-generation non-stick surface for all kinds of foods. The fact that it can be used for cooking different foods all at the same time makes this pan perfect for a fun, creative cuisine. The square one is coated in Fine Gres, the latest-generation ceramic from Moneta, ideal for crisp, golden cooking. The three grill pans thus represent the world of grilling in all its many forms.

the egg fryer in its original 1950s version

The Egg Fryer, Over Half a Century of Design Many people are truly fond of the Moneta egg fryer. I have been working with Moneta for over thirty years and this is one of its historic items. It was presumably first made in the late fifties and it is testament to the revolution brought about in Italian homes by the introduction of the first household appliances, such as the fridge and washing machine. The main features of the egg fryer is that it is for just one egg and is very compact. It is worth pointing out that Moneta was one of the first brands in Italy to produce non-stick pans and that this little object was perfect for introducing what was then an innovative technology making its first appearance on the market. Its compactness, due to the small size of the shape, which is somewhere between a small frying pan and a small sautĂŠ pan, and the characteristic small handle, meant it could be stored in small places, such as the first refrigerators or the sideboards of those days. As well as for cooking individual eggs and preparing small amounts of food, it was also considered as the perfect place for keeping leftovers. Instead of using small plates for these leftovers, it could easily go into the fridge, so that it would then be ready to be placed directly on the gas hob. The design of this simple and also charming item reminds me of those objects that made the history of Italian lifestyle in the post-war period, and I like to think of it alongside the small runabouts like the 500 or the Isetta, and the Vespa, the real symbols that marked the development of the Italian way of life in those years. With a great deal of respect, we recently intervened on the design of the little handle to bring it up to date in terms of its ergonomics and, especially, in line with the new use this little utensil is put to, for it is now used more for making individual creative preparations than for the uses it was put to back in the fifties. One thing about this singular item has remained the same: the fact that it is both charming and useful. Marcello Cutino

Vision for Seqex Friendly energy and the concept of the seed head: Seqex, a manufacturer of electromedical ionoresonance equipment, entrusted BCF with the important task of designing and creating a website that would use a simple, reassuring way to communicate this technology, which is notable for its delicate application but effective results. This is a world that may be seen by users with a degree of scepticism and fear. The approach was two-pronged: first to convey a light, friendly image of energy, like that of a seed head caressing the skin, and, secondly, to respond to 8 questions, in order to dispel any doubt about the effectiveness of this technology.

THE ANSWERS TO 8 COMMON QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND SEQEX

8 ANSWERS

WHAT DOES THE NAME SEQEX MEANS?

WHAT IS SEQEX?

HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM TRADITIONAL DEVICES?

WHAT MEDICAL SECTOR DOES IT BELONG TO?

HOW DOES IT WORK?

WHAT BENEFITS DOES IT OFFERS?

HOW IS IT USED?

LIMITATIONS

The Website The site gives clear replies to eight questions. With a responsive grid and great visual impact, this site is designed as a means for conveying information about the world of Seqex and its culture to the end user (the patient or potential patient). This is because, since it deals with non-traditional medicine, most of the searches can be expected to come from the online world. The structure has been designed to be easy to access, the architecture of the subjects has been created in an easy, intuitive way, and the content is provided in the form of reference information in order to convey a full understanding of the product and technology. As we shall see, the visuals have been designed to make the user feel at ease, even though these are electromedical units. The content is extensive, providing many levels of information that can be accessed according to the degree of interest. The concept is that of the dandelion seed head. The idea was to use a well-known natural element, close to the popular imagination and easy to interpret, conveying positive sensations as the bearer of delicate energy, bringing a positive feel, like transporting a seed, and bringing about a positive relationship with nature. This solution captures the aspect of harmony and lightness. It is then accompanied by pictures of people, showing the human side of it, totally dedicated to their well-being. All this was completed with more technological, scientific images for the product and equipment, in order to convey the truly scientific nature of what Seqex has to offer, moving away from the commonplace images used by competitors, which fail to convey the values mentioned here. Handle for rack ovens OPERATION

Handle for Logiudice Forni Rack Ovens After the success of the Premium project (ADI Index 2011), BCF has put its name to the new handle that characterises the latest rack ovens from Logiudice Forni. The handle on rack ovens is in the form of a double wing that, as well as creating a distinctive design, expresses its important function of opening the door. The two wings help lighten the movement of the handle from the vertical (door open) to horizontal (door closed) and, same time, they intuitively indicate their position, ensuring safety by giving a clear idea of whether the door is open or closed.

INITIATIVES

An event in 2016 that is worthy of mention is BCF’s collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts of Verona with a course on “Art Direction and Product Design” held by Marcello Cutino, in which the methodology adopted by BCF became the subject of study. BCFactory, a hothouse of young ideas, is still up and running, examining topics in various sectors, from fashion to technical fields, making its own contribution to BCF’s professional operations, as in the case of the Truekeg and Seqex projects.

Marcello Cutino and the students on the course.

The BCF Methodology Encounters the Academy of Fine Arts in Verona with a Course on “Design as Cosmos” Held by Marcello Cutino. Students doing the two-year specialisation course in design, a third of them from abroad, approached the subject of “Design as Cosmos” as the philosophy of an approach matured by the long experience of BCF Studio, which has led to an innovative methodology for developing design.
