To set the mood for good health and happiness in the home, I suggest starting with the story on page 34 that digs into the concept of hygge—the art of being cozy and comfortable. In the Pacific Northwest, it serves as a good strategy to combat the cold, gray weather and occasional seasonal affective disorder. Bellevue Club member and local interior designer Ann Lundquist is a huge fan of hygge, and she designed her own Belgium-style Medina home with the idea in mind. Get inspired with photos of her work on page 50. If you’re already happy with the look and feel of your home but you want to find more ways to get moving within it, check out the feature on starting a home yoga practice with Bellevue Club teacher Nicky Ruiz. She breaks down the 10 simple postures that can change the way you wake up in the morning. MASTERS SWIM MEET The Bellevue Club hosted a national Master’s Mile meet earlier this year with 48 competitors from all over the country. At the meet, there were two World Short Course Meter Records set by the same person: Dan Kirkland, age 70. His records include the 800-meter split of 10:28.96 and a 1500-meter final time of 19:52.89.

2 wild salmon filets 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil TOMATO COULIS

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 3 tablespoons minced shallots 4 vine-ripened tomatoes, quartered 1 tablespoon Banyuls vinegar ½ tablespoon chopped tarragon ½ tablespoon chopped parsley ¼ cup heavy whipping cream CHICKPEA SUCCOTASH

2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 small white onion, diced 2 cups fresh green chickpeas (sub with fresh English peas or fava beans) 1 large zucchini, diced 1 large yellow squash, diced 3 red bell peppers, diced For the tomato coulis, sweat the garlic and shallots in oil until soft. Add the tomatoes and cook down over a low heat until they start to break down. Add the vinegar, herbs and cream, and then simmer for about five minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Puree the mixture in a blender. For the succotash, sweat the garlic and onions in the butter until soft and translucent. Add the chickpeas and sauté on medium heat for five minutes. Add the remaining vegetables and cook until al dente. Season the salmon with salt and black pepper. Add one tablespoon of olive oil to a hot skillet and turn on high. Sear the salmon on one side, and then turn down the heat to medium. Allow the fish to get a nice caramelized sear, and then flip it over and cook to your preferred temperature. 24 | march 2018 reflections

MORNING MOVEMENTS Start your day with this basic yoga series to awaken your awareness in the comfort of your own home. written

The series of yoga poses known as sun salutations is the backbone of most traditional yoga practices. It’s also a great sequence to start your day (hence the name). The movements are simple, effective and can be done in just a few minutes right in your bedroom. No stretchy pants necessary. “A morning yoga routine, no matter how big or small, reduces stress and anxiety. Asana (physical yoga) releases endorphins, improving mood, alertness and memory function,” says Nicky Ruiz, Bellevue Club yoga teacher. “The yoga practice is a means of attaining mindfulness. Awareness of your body, your posture, the way you breath, how you move, the moment, and also how you think. The more likely you are to attain these connections, the more likely you are to maintain them throughout your day.” Ruiz emphasizes that your practice doesn’t have to be elaborate to influence your mind and life. “Less can be more. It’s far more important to be consistent than to make each yoga practice a big thing or obligation. Even simply taking a few minutes to sit upright and remove busy distractions by closing your eyes, taking slow deep rhythmic breaths and setting an intention can be a yoga practice. Yoga is meant to offer relief from the pressures of everyday life, not serve as another task on the to-do list.”

For a little extra heat, stretch your feet every morning with this enlivening pose. Ruiz explains that it helps practitioners connect to their foundation, the feet! “Recognizing your foundation is an important realization that can help carry you through your day. This pose will help remove the effects of slouching and side sleeping, and it will open the heart and throat, a common place for people to hold stress and anxiety.”

T

hat oh-so-Seattle style landed our community in the top spot for America’s “Most Hygge City,” according to Sperling’s Best Places. Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, whether at home or out, as cozy, charming or special. In the last two years, United States pop culture has obsessed over hygge. In 2016, the Oxford Dictionaries put hygge on the shortlist for “Word of the Year” and book after book was published about the concept of Scandinavian coziness.

Hygge is not to be overlooked as a lifestyle craze that comes with a whiff of smugness but is gone the next season. Buying art can be like falling in love—the emotional attachment you have to the pieces in your home makes your heart skip a beat each time you walk by. Hopping from one social gathering to another and hoping to find your match can be exhausting and limits your options. It’s the same when it comes to art. You can visit galleries, follow your favorite artists and hope one day you fall in love, or you can take matters into your own hands and commission a piece of art you know is just right. Local artist Melanie Biehle breaks down the process below.

CHOOSING AN ARTIST Commissioning art is a creatively engaging and rewarding process, but it is also a commitment of time, money and trust. Before jumping into the process, it’s important to have a game plan. First and foremost, pick an artist you connect with and already enjoy. “For instance, if you’re looking to commission a portrait, don’t hire an abstract painter,” Melanie Biehle, a Seattle-based artist explains. “The key is to find an artist whose style will complement your own.” Biehle is a local abstract artist influenced by the city and the ocean. Her work is strongly influenced by street art, mid-century textiles and Southern California surf culture. Biehle has been featured in HGTV Magazine, Seattle Refined, Uppercase Magazine, Flow Magazine and Luxe Interiors + Design Magazine. For Biehle, the process that comes with creating a commissioned piece of art and merging her ideas with another person’s is rewarding. “I love the process of collaboration and seeing what emerges from blending ideas, color palettes, and styles to create something completely unique.” Most artists should have websites, social media accounts and client reviews. Don’t hesitate to ask for anything you need to feel comfortable about your choice.

SIGNING THE CONTRACT AND GETTING TO WORK

There are a few key things to consider when commissioning a new piece: where it’ll go, what you want it to look and feel like, and if there are other pieces you enjoy and can point to for reference. Once you contact an artist, they’ll most likely ask you for some information like the size you want, the style and what timeline you’re working with. Your budget will also be a factor in the size, materials and timeline. Each artist works differently. Biehle also asks her clients if there are any color palettes they particularly enjoy or any colors they don’t want to see in the piece at all. She will visit a local client’s home to see the space where the painting will hang. Most artists want several details about the piece you’re looking for. “But not too many,” Biehle says. “You want to leave some room for the artist to merge their creative vision with yours.”

Once the basic details are communicated, the artist will most likely brainstorm, provide mood boards and remedial sketches or examples of their concept. Once the creative direction is approved and contracts or payment handled, it’s time to get started. Biehle normally sends one or two work-in-progress pictures to keep the client involved along the way. Then, once it’s finished, the piece is off to its new home. Every artist proceeds differently when it comes to each step of the artistic process. Some want more details, some fewer. Some are good at staying in contact and want you to be involved, and some don’t. Just like dating, pick your artist wisely and choose someone who makes you feel comfortable with his or her process.

Much like the seasonal life of a plant, the indoor gardening trend comes and goes. Beginning in the early 2010s, the indoor cacti and succulent trend emerged, as people were looking for cheap, easy and low-maintenance plants to keep alive—much easier to live a hectic lifestyle with a succulent waiting for you at home rather than a pet. That trend evolved from low-maintenance cacti to bigger, more lush indoor gardens as new and young plant-fans grew in gardening confidence. Then social media took over. With a flurry of Instagram accounts and hashtags, the urban “jungalows” became the latest styling trend—and even though it can be joked about as another millennial craze, there are some very real advantages that come with surrounding yourself with a green plant gang. The indoor jungle has taken over, and in 2017 Pantone’s “Color of the Year” was greenery.

Above and beyond adding a pop of color to a space, living with plants can reduce stress and pain, help you sleep better, improve air quality, lower background noises and keep air temperatures down. “Plants transpire, absorbing carbon dioxide and exuding oxygen in return,” Bellevue Club’s Garden Floral Manager Lisa Yost says. “Studies have shown that living plants in an interior space improve productivity.” The recent boom of urban rainforests makes most plant-human relationship researchers excited that younger generations are most likely going to have a strong, lifelong connection to nature. Now, you know you want to begin your own indoor paradise complete with spiraling vines and tiny succulents lining your kitchen window. But where do you start? “Since light is the ultimate factor for success in growing plants indoors, any low-light-tolerant plant will perform better,” Yost explains. She suggests looking into Chinese evergreens (aglaonema), pothos (philodendron), dracaenas, snake plants (sansevieria) and last but not least, cast-iron plants (aspidistra). “However, if you have lots of natural light, you can successfully grow many different types of plants.”

When it comes to care and watering, Yost suggests new gardeners come up with a schedule, keep a simple checklist and err on the dry side. “I don’t know how many plants I have killed with kindness by overwatering.” For example, Yost suggests choosing one day every week, or every other, depending on your plants, to make sure you water them, clean them and look for any little pests making your houseplant their home. She also suggests spending money on good soil as it’s akin to good nutrition in humans. “They also have life-spans like we do,” Yost says. “Don’t take it personally if a plant dies, even after many years of the same care.” With a rise in gardening demand, there’s also been a rise in specialty gardening blogs, books and stores. It’s never been easier to get into growing something green. “I suggest if you’re serious about growing plants, go to a reputable nursery with a trained staff to help you,” Yost says. Before you go, pick a place for your plant in your home so you know the amount of light exposure and plant size you’re looking for. “And of course, there is always the Internet with a plethora of knowledge right at your fingertips.”

Old World meets eastside

Interior designer and Bellevue Club member displays a different side to eastside style

Ann Lundquist is not a fan of trends.

Take one step into her Medina home and it’s obvious. Eschewing the gray, brown and sage-green color palettes often found in the Northwest, she prefers warm creams and whites with pops of red, pink and yellow. Her décor relies heavily on Old World antiques and fresh flowers, and even the structure is distinct, modeled after a Belgium stripped-down style that holds symmetry, clean lines, minimal features (there’s no molding) and garden access in the highest regard. “We built this home 15 years ago. It was a really fun process,” says Lundquist, an interior designer and Washington native. And every last detail of the house is meaningful to her. She drew the floor plan herself and says the best part of the process was that she was able to focus on exactly what was most important to her—creating a home perfect for entertaining and brimming with charm. “I absolutely love having people over to my house. Setting up a nice little bar, having laughter in the house, lighting candles, and taking care of people in a really relaxed way—that is my heaven,” Lundquist says. The way she designed it, every room in the house can be used to entertain. “I really wanted a big welcoming entry for that reason. We’ve even put a long table in there before,” she says. Once she had a good footprint, she added layers of furniture with beautiful fabrics, antique tables and mirrors mixed with modern art. It’s a collected look that she’s curated throughout the years.

• “One thing I tell residential clients is to try and have a little more patience with the process. Take the time to find your unique perspective on your home,” she says. “I encourage people to create their own little world.” Of course, her other big piece of advice is to think outside the box. “I challenge my clients to push against the trends. Make sure what you’re putting in place—modern or traditional—can really stand the test of time,” she says. “Pick timeless pieces with maybe one quirky light fixture.” While she relies on certain principles of design, Lundquist says the look and feel of her own home isn’t necessarily for everyone. When she’s working with clients, she doesn’t impress her style upon their homes. The basement of the house was designed to be her studio, which is filled to the brim with fabric swatches, design books and plenty of inspiration.

“Everyone has a unique point of view or taste, and I can help hone that. I’m not here to put my stamp on it. I’m here to express your vision and prevent you from making mistakes— it’s so common and expensive to make mistakes,” she says. Lundquist has acquired tricks and tips to avoid making those mistakes over the decades she’s been in business as an interior designer. “When people are trying to figure out what they like, I suggest playing with putting a piece of art in your home that is slightly outside your comfort zone—but resonates with you. And then work around that piece, building a little bit of a collected look with a few antiques. Even if you prefer mostly modern, and I love to design modern homes, it’s really nice to have a yin and yang of old and new,” she says. “Have some reference point to the past.”

Ann’s entertainment tips Interior design and entertaining go hand in hand for Lundquist. Here are her tricks for hosting an easy evening that’s sure to please. ON AMBIANCE: “I definitely use a lot of candles. I also make it a point to turn on lamps all over the house; that way, people don’t feel restricted to just one part of the house. And I have dimmers on everything, even exterior light.” ON THE BASICS: “It takes time to build up to it, but having the equipment makes entertaining easy. Have enough plates, platters, table settings, big bowls for salads. Have enough chairs. I have a bunch of folding chairs from Cost Plus, and I use them all the time.” ON THE FOOD: “I don’t think people expect insanely complicated food. I do a bunch of salads and cook-ahead dishes, and then maybe make one hot thing fresh out of the oven.” ON BEING HOSTESS: “I’m a huge proponent of mastering the art of imperfection. I entertain with that in mind, and I’m very relaxed about it.” ON ENTERTAINING MORE: “I think sometimes people don’t think their house is finished enough to show it, but I really encourage people to not overthink entertaining because when you have people over you swirl around and freshen it up, maybe bring in fresh flowers. And it looks better after a couple of hours.” ON HER FAVORITE TYPE OF EVENT: “What I really like is the random dinner party. People don’t expect it to be lavish. It can be simple.”

ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN

If you haven’t taken a peek at the hashtag #vanlife on Instagram, you might not realize how coveted the idea of traveling by van is these days. In an article last year, The New Yorker explained #vanlife as “a one-word life-style signifier that has come to evoke a number of contemporary trends: a renewed interest in the American road trip, a culture of hippieinflected outdoorsiness, and a life free from the tyranny of a nine-to-five office job.” Of course, with a rental, you only get to escape that world for a week or two at a time, but even just dabbling with van life has struck a chord with the public. In early 2016, Peace Vans Rentals launched with four vehicles. In just over two years, they’re up to 19 vehicles, including Vanagons, Eurovans and two modern Mercedes camper vans. July was already fully booked before January ended. “These days, most vacations are so preprogrammed and preplanned and preordained; the opportunity for serendipitous experiences is somewhat limited,” Sitner says. “On a road trip, all sorts of things can happen on any given day.” 62 | march 2018 reflections

SOMETHING TO RELY ON

That sense of spontaneity is what attracts people to vacation in a van, but we’re also a culture that likes to have our creature comforts. HIT THE ROAD

Once you’ve got your home away from home locked down, deciding where to go is the fun part. The company has developed several detailed itineraries to offer inspiration, from the San Juan Islands to the Oregon high desert to Eastern Washington. The most popular destination, though, is the Olympic Peninsula. “There are snow-capped mountains, a rain forest, coastal beaches, wild rivers—there’s so much you can do on the peninsula,” Sitner says. If you’re not sure if van life is up your alley (and those Instagram images don’t have you convinced), you’re welcome to drop by the shop and take a closer look. This can also be helpful in deciding which style is best suited to you. In 2017, more than 700 passengers traveled 154,651 miles, making an estimated 3,195 s’mores and probably a whole lot of new friends, too—these vehicles are attention grabbers. “They’re amazing smile machines,” Sitner says of the fleet. “Every single renter is smiling when they pick up and smiling even bigger when they drop off.”

ELITE/VARSITY CAMP

Ages 11-17 or staff approval, M-Th, 8:30-10:45 a.m., Weeks 1-11 Participants must be able to do the following: 20 in a row with a partner, use both semi-western and continental grips and hit a flat and slice serve. Practice will focus on consistent hitting, court positioning, shot selection, conditioning and footwork. Players will have an opportunity to play in interclub matches on Fridays. $195/member

The Bellevue Club will participate in the JETL (Junior Eastside Tennis League) this summer. Juniors participating in either the Elite/Varsity or Rookie/Junior Varsity camps are eligible to play in the league matches. Matches are held on each Friday throughout the summer.

Floating, gliding and blowing bubbles are introduced. All skills are performed with instructor support.

PRESCHOOL 2:

Our program follows the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum that teaches aquatic and water safety skills in a logical progression. Throughout the levels, participants build on basic aquatic postures in order to learn various propulsive movements on the front, back and side. The objectives of our program are to teach people to be safe in, on and around the water and eventually become efficient and successful swimmers. Class times as listed may not be available each session based on participation. Verify lesson availability by session at the Aquatics or Athletic Desk or online. Assessments are required to enter any level beyond P1 or Y1 or if you are not currently in enrolled in lessons. An assessment will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes. An adult is required to be in the water with any child under the age of 6. No appointment necessary.

PARENT & CHILD

Private swim lessons offer the greatest flexibility and one-on-one attention for swimmers of any age and ability. Private swim lessons allow for focused instruction specific to the individual needs of the swimmer. The private lesson instructors are experienced with swimmers of all levels. We try to tailor the instructor to the skill level and goals of the child or children. The Bellevue Club’s Youth Basketball Academy focuses on developing each player as an individual and teammate, placing a high value on both skill and character development. Youth basketball class curriculum follows a natural skill progression, allowing players to reach their full potential. BRONZE: INTRO TO BASKETBALL Th, 4-4:45 p.m., Gym Bronze is designed to train players on the fundamentals of basketball. Basic skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting are introduced. Once players are able to show basic proficiency with their skill development, hand-eye coordination and sportsmanship, they will be ready for the next level of training. Bronze players must have completed one session of Little Olympians. $110/member SILVER: BUILDING FUNDAMENTALS Tu, 4-4:45 p.m., Gym Silver focuses on building fundamentals. Players will begin to refine their shooting technique, dribbling ability and learn ingame competition. Intermediate skills such as crossovers, running the floor, playing defense, chest passing and jump shots are introduced. Players must display confidence while performing skills, working in a team and following instructions. Silver players must pass the Bronze skills assessment prior to registration. $110/member GOLD: FUNDAMENTALS REFINEMENT Tu, 4:45-5:45 p.m., Gym Participants will go through an intense hour-long skill-building workout. Each class will focus on a different essential aspect of the game. The goal of these workouts is to focus on skill development and increased confidence through proper repetition. Gold players must pass the Silver skills assessment prior to registration. $132/member

Ages 6 and older, Gym Private lessons are the most effective way to improve your game. Customized workouts utilize multiple resources including the Shoot-A-Way, weighted balls, adjustable hoop and more! Individual Training $55/50-minute lesson $28/25-minute lesson Group Training $71/50-minute lessons for two players. Additional $17 per additional player for up to four participants. Charges are split evenly between players. Team Training $170/50-minute session Available for teams between four to 10 players who are looking to bring their playing to the next level. Fees are charged to a single sponsoring member. Guests allowed under a sponsoring members account.

The Shoot-A-Way acts as an automatic rebounder, dramatically improving your shot. Fee includes set up, tear down and instruction for use. $30/50-minute session

Tu/Th, Class size 16 Compliment your MidLakes Summer Swim League Training with Blue Whales! Our goal is to develop a young swimmers stroke proficiency in a fun, supportive environment. Swimmers will receive focused instruction on starts, turns, finishes and detailed stroke development. BEGINNER 4:15-4:45 p.m. Prerequisite of at least three sessions of Youth 4 or assessment of equivalent skills. Swimmers will continue to refine all four competitive strokes as well as understand workout sets, intervals and lane swimming etiquette. $120/session INTERMEDIATE 4:45-5:30 p.m. Prerequisite of at least three sessions of Youth 4 or assessment of equivalent skills. Workouts include drills to refine muscle memory and fine tune stroke coordination. Swimmers will learn to understand and incorporate drills into workouts to further improve performance. $180/session

REGISTRATION AND CANCELLATION POLICIES REGISTRATION FEES: Payment for programs is billed at the time of registration. Program fees cannot be prorated. Payment for services is billed the day of the service (Fees subject to change.) Tax is not included in price for athletic classes, camps and training sessions. CANCELLATIONS: To receive a refund for a program, you must notify us of cancellation at least seven days prior to the start of program. For services, you must notify us of cancellation at least 24 hours before the service. Late cancellations and no-shows are billed at full price. (Cancellations cannot be made online.) MISSED CLASSES AND LATE ARRIVALS: There are no refunds for missed classes or late arrivals for services. CHECK IN/CHECK OUT: Parents or legal guardians of program or service participants younger than 12 must check their children in and out every day with the instructor.

MEMBER SPONSOR: A guest may participate in a program or service when he or she is registered by a member. The sponsoring member must be in the Club while the guest attends the program or service. Members have registration priority over guests. REGISTRATION: Members can sign up guests by calling or visiting the Athletic Services Desk. Guest registration is not available online. FEES: Guest fees for programs and services are typically 20 percent higher than member fees. (Fees subject to change.) LIMITATION: Guests are allowed to attend one program or service per year.
