WHAT’S INSIDE

A Letter From the President

Faith is the first factor in a life devoted to service. Without faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible.” (Mary McLeod Bethune)

As we close this school year, I would like to congratulate the members and parents of our Class of 2024. I hope the years that they have spent with us at BCCHS hold special memories. We pray that our seniors will continue their faith journey and that we have prepared them for a successful future.

The Valedictorian of the Class of 2024 was Paige Gerstenkorn. Paige graduated with a 4.31 GPA and an ACT composite score of 34. Paige is the daughter of Jason and Kelly Gerstenkorn and a member of St. Peter, the Apostle Catholic Church in Schulte.

The salutatorian for the Class of 2024 was Grace Francis. Grace graduated with a 4.29 GPA and an ACT composite score of 31. Grace is the daughter of Robert and Lisa Francis and a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.

The Bishop David M. Maloney Award for Scholastic Excellence is awarded to a student who excels academically and has the moral values and leadership abilities that would enable this award to be coveted. The recipient is active in the life of their parish. This student excels academically while having a strong emphasis on the mission of the school in relation to their faith. Congratulations to the 2024 Bishop David M. Maloney award recipient Peter Cook, son of Jude and Barb Cook, of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.

The Bishop’s Crest Award is given to a student who over the four years of high school has applied themselves to take full advantage of the educational and formation opportunities in such a manner as to merit recognition. This includes physical, religious, spiritual, moral and emotional development. This award is pointed to the individual who has made the greatest movement from the beginning of high school through graduation. This award calls attention to the objective of Catholic education, which is to address itself to the fullest development of the whole person. Congratulations to the 2024 Bishop’s Crest recipient, Isabella Curry, daughter of Sterling Curry and the late Sacha Curry, of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.

We truly do appreciate all who have generously given to our BC Fund this year which ends on June 30th. Our BC Fund supplements parish support received for daily operations. It is imperative for all of us to participate so all active stewardship families can receive an excellent Catholic education.

I would like to acknowledge the following staff members who will not be returning to BCCHS next year. Jeny Ayres, Grace Biby, Chris Endress, Bonita Fieser, Julie Fisher, Mallory Grabendike, Matthew Hale, Nathan Hampton, Vanessa Harshberger, Fr. Ed Herzog, Laura Hickerson, Joe Langenfeld, Emerson Lank, Karen Line, Grace Milburn, Jennifer Naumann, Sherry Pfeifer, Andrea Rau, and Ben Reilly. A Letter From Our Chaplain

For the last six years, I have had the privilege to be a part of the Bishop Carroll Catholic High School community. To say that it has been a gift is to merely scratch the surface. However, it is with a heavy heart that this will be my last write-up for the Aquila magazine as Bishop Kemme has asked me to take on a new assignment beginning in July. As I told my students, if I had it my way I would have liked to stay here at Bishop Carroll for another five years, but I trust my Bishop and the Holy Spirit that it is time for me to take the next step in my priestly ministry. I remember my priest professors in seminary telling me that the hardest part of being a priest is not the promise of celibacy, but rather the promise of obedience to the bishop when he asks a priest to leave a place that he loves to go out into the great unknown of another assignment. As a 25-year-old I couldn’t grasp that reality, however, now as a 35-year-old, I can say that is absolutely the case!

Lord knows that I am far from perfect, and I’m sure I have made mistakes along the way that have offended people or at times have barred Bishop Carroll from being the great high school that it historically has been. However, as I leave Bishop Carroll there is one word that continually comes to mind…gratitude. I am grateful to Bishop Kemme for placing me here in the fall of 2018 and for allowing me to be a part of this community for six years. I am grateful to the administration, faculty, and staff for allowing me to serve the students alongside them for over half a decade. I am grateful to the students and their parents for entrusting their education to us in the Church. Above all, I am grateful to God that in his providence he would let me play a small part in the great institution that is Bishop Carroll Catholic High School.

As I have told many people over the course of the last few years, the best part of being a priest in my experience is not celebrating the mass, or forgiving sins in the confessional, or anointing people on their death bed. As great as all those things are, the best part of being a priest is the relationships and friendships that have arose because of my priesthood, and that couldn’t be truer for my time at Bishop Carroll. I have met so many people because the Lord placed me at Bishop Carroll that I would never have met otherwise. Some of those people have become like family to me, and for that I can’t be anything but grateful!

I sure will miss this place, but following in the footsteps of our Lord as his priest, I too “must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent” (Luke 4:43).

God bless,

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. ‘” — Jeremiah 29:11
