ON THE COVER: The Rentschler Arboretum is a beautiful, 34-acre tract of land on a high vista in the foothills of the Blue Mountain near Bernville, Pennsylvania. It is owned and maintained by the Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club, which has received grants from several funds managed by the Community Foundation. The property includes gardens, wildflower meadows, a walking trail, farm fields, a nature sanctuary, the Rentschler Pavilion, and the Kalbach Pavilion. The grounds are open to the public during daylight hours.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY FOUNDATION?
What is a Community Foundation? A Community Foundation is a nonprofit corporation that serves as a civic leader for a region by developing, managing, and distributing funds to meet existing and emerging community needs. They are created by residents, governed by a volunteer board of directors, and run by professional staff with expertise in identifying the needs of the community. Arrow International Scholarship Fund
This fund provides scholarships to Berks County students who are high achievers, with a preference to applicants whose parents or grandparents worked at Arrow International on October 1, 2007. In addition to providing scholarships, this fund supports innovative projects that respond to the unmet needs of the disadvantaged in the fields of human services, education and health.

This fund provides scholarships to altruistic Reading High School seniors.
Battle of the Badges Scholarship Fund
This fund provides scholarships for graduating seniors who are children of active police officers or firefighters serving in the City of Reading or who are children of retired or deceased police officers or firefighters who served in the City of Reading.
Berks County Association of School Retirees Scholarship and Grant Fund
This fund provides scholarships to a high school senior who is graduating from one of the public schools in Berks County, PA, who will be attending a four-year college or university to major in elementary or secondary education with the intent of becoming a schoolteacher.

This fund provides scholarships to graduating seniors from high schools in Berks County, Pennsylvania, who employ athletic trainers. The recipients must have participated in student training in at least one sport for a period of two years during high school and intend to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine at an accredited college or university.

The recipient must be in the top 10% of the graduating class and must have demonstrated strong leadership qualities during high school.
Earl L. Speicher Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund provides scholarships for students graduating from Brandywine Area School District who will continue their education and demonstrate a wellrounded involvement in sports, music, and school or community activities.
Edith Dohner Fund
This fund provides scholarships to high school seniors at Reading High School who will continue their education at a four-year college or university and have a financial need. Applicants must be in the top 25% of their graduating class at Reading High School and intend to become a schoolteacher.
Elizabeth Horvath Swimming Scholarship Fund
This fund provides scholarships to graduating seniors from a Berks County high school who swam on a school or club team and who intend to swim in college.
Elizabeth Martelli Scholarship Fund This fund provides scholarships to a Reading High School senior who has demonstrated a talent and passion for writing and who will further his or her education after high school.

This fund provides loans to graduates of the Governor Mifflin Senior High School for use in an accredited post high school program.
GRIP Dreamer Scholarship Fund
This fund provides scholarships to students who are not eligible for Federal and/or Pennsylvania financial aid or is/ are otherwise ineligible for financial aid.
Gudrun R. Wilson Schuylkill Valley Middle School Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund provides scholarships to a student who is: 1) pursuing a degree in the field of education; 2) or for a student who was at one time, or is currently, identified as learning support or learning disabled and is pursuing a degree in any field; 3) or for a student who has overcome adversity in his or her life and is pursuing a degree in any field.
Guenter Family Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund provides scholarships to a well-rounded, graduating male and graduating female athlete from Wilson School District who is dedicated to both education and athletics.

This fund provides scholarships for Berks County residents to (a) pursue master’s degrees in social work, or (b) further their education in the mechanical, technical, trade, or automotive fields, and it also awards scholarships to (c) Wilson High School seniors majoring in engineering.

HOW DO I START A FUND?
How Do I Start a Fund? Creating a fund is simple. The impact is immeasurable. Determine what you’re passionate about supporting. We are here to help you determine your charitable goals. You can structure a fund of your own and work with your attorney, accountant, financial advisor, or trust officer to make sure it works with your estate plan or current financial goals. You can also complete our online questionnaire.
Sign a fund agreement. A fund agreement is a legally binding document that says you are donating money to the Community Foundation to be used for charity. The agreement states the Community Foundation will distribute the money to ensure your charitable intent is honored now and in the future.
Make an initial donation. You have two options to complete the creation of your fund. First, you can start your fund with an initial taxdeductible amount of at least $50,000 to endow a grantmaking fund and $100,000 for a scholarship fund. You
