Welcome

Mr Richard Cairns Head Master

I know full well that when pupils receive their copies of the Brightonian each year, their first instinct is to scan the text and photographs to discover whether they get a mention, completely passing over any words of wisdom from me.

Nevertheless, let me take this opportunity once more to thank the girls and boys here for making me so proud of you in so many ways. There are, of course, the sporting, artistic, musical and academic heroes of the year. I salute and admire you. But I refer more particularly to those smaller acts of goodness that underpin our daily lives at school and make me very hopeful that the future you will build will be a place of which humanity can be proud.

This is the last time I shall be writing this introduction and so I also want to put on record my gratitude to every pupil, teacher, parent and member of the support staff who has been on this wonderful journey with me at the College. I wish Mr Marshall-Taylor the same good fortune as he takes up the reins and their associated responsibilities. I know he will prove to be one of the great Brighton Head Masters.

I should also like to thank Mr Harrison and Mr Taylor for editing this year’s edition with such palpable joy in their task. Their enthusiasm for the project shines throughout.

Richard Cairns – 18 years as Headmaster

‘ I was delighted that we could thank Richard for his 18 years of service as Head Master of Brighton College by naming our newest building after him.’

I think sometimes we take the extraordinary success of the College for granted. Not so long ago, a former Head Master of Harrow and now Chairman of the Independent Schools Council wrote a book about transformative education in which he singled out Brighton College as the UK independent school that best exemplifies how, with the right leadership, educational communities can dramatically reinvent themselves, turning the good into the consistently outstanding. In the sixteen years I have been associated with the College, as a parent and as a Governor, the school has been named Sunday Times UK School of the Year twice (something no other school has surpassed) and then Sunday Times School of the Decade.

It is possibly less well known (perhaps because it is not publicised on our minibuses!) that Richard Cairns is also the only Head ever to have been named UK Head of the Year twice, by Tatler. In his time as Head Master, the College roll has

doubled, applications have quadrupled, two boarding houses have become six, academic results have been consistently outstanding, the co-curricular and sports programme is more impressive than ever, the campus has been almost entirely rebuilt with the obvious exception of our beautiful Gothic quad, and the College has expanded geographically too, with four College prep schools and six international schools in its growing family. Many more pupils now wear the Brighton College uniform beyond the British Isles than here at home.

And perhaps most importantly, the College has rooted its ethos in kindness, establishing a reputation for being one of the most inclusive schools in the country, and (through our support for the London Academy of Excellence, Brighton Pride, Opening Doors and Ukrainian refugees) one of the most committed to being a part of society rather than set apart from it.

My role – and that of the Governing Body – is to ensure that we maintain this positive momentum even as we face growing political and economic headwinds. In order to do this – and much else besides - we will rely ever more on Richard Cairns to lead and develop our growing community, deliver our ambitious development plans, and nurture and expand our supporter base.

He is the person most clearly associated with the success of the College and it is he whom potential partners and supporters, in particular, wish to see. It is also important that he continues to ensure that the ethos of which we are so proud is maintained and developed both in the College and across the entire family of schools. In order to do this, it seemed self-evident to the Governing Body that we need to give him greater bandwidth.

Therefore, Richard has become ‘Executive Head’ of the Brighton College Group of Schools, with the title of Principal, the title of the first College Head in 1845.

I was delighted that we could thank Richard for his 18 years of service as Head Master of Brighton College by naming our newest building after him.

The Richard Cairns Building, opened in April 2024, marks the culmination of a 15-year masterplan, and may just be our best building yet!

I am even more delighted that he will still be very present to enjoy it as he heads up our ambitious new plans for the Brighton College Family in the years ahead.

Graduation The Upper Sixth celebrated their Graduation on Thursday 27 June, with parents, teachers and pupils all coming together for the ceremony and valedictory speeches.

Each House hosted their own valedictions, and it was wonderful to spend time reminiscing about the pupils’ years at the College. This was followed by the Graduation Ceremony in the Chapel.

Jacob Sandelson (He. 2010-15), who went on to found Compound, shared a thought-provoking and powerful message, encouraging pupils to go forth into the world and make a difference with all the values that Brighton College has instilled in them. After much hearty hymn singing, the Head Master shared his reflections on the leaving Upper Sixth’s time at the College and wished them well for the future.

Finally, parents, family and teachers all raised a glass to the newest Old Brightonians with a drinks reception in the Front Quad. We wish the leaving Upper Sixth all the very best in their future endeavours and cannot wait to hear about everything they get up to.

Speech Day 2024 Speech Day took place on Saturday 22 June in the splendid Brighton Dome, giving the College community the opportunity to come together and celebrate our pupils’ remarkable achievements.

Pupils and guests were welcomed into the Dome by our excellent College Swing Band.

The Chair of Governors, The Rt. Hon. Lord Maude of Horsham, started proceedings, introducing the Head Master, who took the audience on a tour through the 18 years of his headship. It was a poignant, amusing and thought-provoking collection of anecdotes covering the highlights and challenges of his remarkable tenure as Head. Sustained applause and an ovation met the end of his final Speech Day report as Head Master.

The talent of Brighton pupils was showcased through a variety of dance and musical performances and celebrated in the awarding of prizes for achievement and endeavour. The Chamber Choir sang two pieces: Seek Him That Maketh The Seven Stars by Jonathan Dove, a piece they performed in November at the Royal Albert Hall, and Your Song by Elton John, which featured solos from the outgoing Upper Sixth choristers. The dance scholars also performed Wild, choreographed by Ms Schofield, which featured central roles for the Upper Sixth leavers.

This year’s guest speaker, and OB, Clare Connor CBE, spoke about her inspirational career as a cricketer and England Captain. She talked about her battles for gender equality in cricket and the remarkable change she has been instrumental in making a reality. She also spoke of the role that Brighton College has played in her journey as a pupil and a teacher.

To finish the event, the outgoing Head of School, Kathleen Keaney (Chichester), gave a speech reflecting on her time at the College and urging her peers to use their privilege wisely to affect change and fight for equality. She spoke with authority, humour, passion and a maturity well beyond her years. There was a remarkable symmetry to the three speeches, which all highlighted the supremacy of kindness in everything that we do.

Valedictions Alex Patton Alex leaves us to join King’s College Canterbury as the Senior Deputy Head. During his eight and a half years at the College, Alex has made a tremendous contribution to the Senior Management Team, firstly in his role as Head of Sixth Form, before being appointed Deputy Head (Staff) and then Deputy Head (Pupils). He has also worked closely with the admissions team and been an invaluable member of the geography department, teaching the Sixth Form pupils and running weekly extension and enrichment sessions. Indeed, Alex is in his element when standing on Stóri Dímon, above the Markarfljot valley, teaching groups of geographers about the landscape of southern Iceland.

Pupils will miss his innate ability to bring the physical environment to life in a way that has inspired numerous Sixth Formers to pursue the subject at degree level. As a colleague, his support, leadership and love of teaching will also be much missed. We wish Alex the very best of luck for his new role, as he moves to Canterbury with his wife Alex, and boys, Tommy and Charlie.

Elizabeth Cody In September 1985 when Elizabeth joined, she was the second full-time female appointment, and the Staff Common Room was still called the Masters’ Common Room.

Richard Alvers Ricky joined Brighton College the year after me and we were soon working closely together as part of the Lower School pastoral team (and more recently in Seldon). He rapidly established legendary status as an outstanding tutor and Deputy HMM, as a Spanish teacher (later Head of Spanish), instigator of the ‘Hoop Troop’, and co-founder and host of the Brighton College staff ‘Stars in Their Eyes’. We bonded over a shared

Elizabeth’s flexibility and adaptability was a gift in the classroom: her enthusiasm and energy impacted many pupils’ subsequent careers. She had very high expectations of her pupils and

Her personal sporting prowess and excellent organisation soon saw Elizabeth appointed as Head of Girls’ Games until 2001. She helped to put Brighton College girls on the map as a force to be reckoned with. The first time a team got to the National finals was under her coaching.

However, as much as she excelled in the classroom and with girls’ games, perhaps her greatest achievement was in her pastoral input. Elizabeth’s innate communicative sensitivity alongside disciplined boundaries led her from being a respected Fenwick residential tutor until 1994, then as the first female tutor in a boys’ house, Hampden, to a much-loved Housemistress of Chichester from 1999 to 2021. She was the longest serving HMM ever!

She has also been immensely respected in her safeguarding role, from Safeguarding lead to Group Director.

Elizabeth has been exceptionally dedicated and has brought so much to Brighton College. We are truly grateful for all she has given.

Ricky has brought his phenomenal skills to so many different facets of College life, whether being a superb Head of PSHEE, an immensely dedicated Welfare Officer, an entertaining host of Strictly or the highlight of the Fenwick Fashion Show catwalk.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to be amongst those for whom Ricky has been an incredible colleague and friend at the College over the past 15 years: he will be hugely missed and United World College in Singapore are very lucky to have him.

Mrs Kitty Brown

James Armstrong Sat in his familiar Common Room chair, dressed in a tweed jacket and hunched over the cryptic crossword, James appeared the stereotype of a traditional schoolmaster. But as his pupils knew, he combined his old-fashioned look with a very modern approach to teaching, enthusing his A-level pupils with an understanding of politics that went far beyond the syllabus. In addition to his legendary podcasts, James won fame in the College’s Masked Singer contest during lockdown (disguised as a pickle).

He was a popular and caring Deputy Housemaster of Abraham House, and also served as the College’s NEU rep, where he found his calling. James leaves us to take a full-time job working for the National Education Union.

Mr Joe Skeaping

Kitty Brown Kitty leaves us after sixteen years of service, during which time she served as the first ever Housemistress of the Third Form, Seldon Housemistress, a stalwart of the English department, and a fantastic asset in the Learning Support department.

Tommy was an experienced classroom practitioner who brought excellent subject knowledge to the role. As a practicing artist they were able to share their expertise and skills confidently with the pupils they taught. As a tutor in Heads House, Tommy showed kindness and compassion to the pupils in their tutor group, supporting them with all aspects of College life.

Miss Kate Muir

Kitty is known for her positive, caring and compassionate approach with pupils and colleagues, her warm leadership style and inspiring House assemblies. Staff have fond memories of teaching both of Mrs Brown’s boys, and pupils affectionately remember her cake decorating and karaoke clubs.

Her powerhouse vocals will also go down in history! She was the first winner of Staff Stars in their Eyes, impersonating Katy Perry, returning as Cheryl Cole with her wonderful English department colleagues as Girls Aloud, as Adele in Brighton’s Got Talent, and disguised as a blue monster in the Masked Teacher!

We wish Kitty the best of luck as she embarks on a gap year; the College will not be the same without her, and of course, the famous Mrs Brown’s Brownies.

Mr Richard Alvers

Tommy Burley Tommy joined the College in Hilary Term 2021 and immediately emerged as a committed and reliable member of staff, splitting their time between the art and photography departments. They quickly engaged in the extracurricular life of the College, pioneering clubs including the Zine Club and the Portrait Painting Club, both of which were very popular with pupils who were keen to hone these specific skills and interests.

Aby Connor Aby leaves the College after four successful years as Deputy Head of PSHEE and Deputy HMM of New House. In these four years, she played an integral role in the boarding community and within the religion and philosophy department. She has shown herself to be a highly accomplished teacher, but her dedication, commitment and impact on her charges spanned beyond the walls of her classroom. She led in the provision of our PSHEE programme for our Sixth Form and had a hugely positive influence on the boarders under her care with her unwavering support and kindness shown to each and every one of them, throughout her time at the College.

The New House girls count themselves as fortunate to have had her in residence for her two years, where she has dedicated herself to caring for and encouraging the girls to strive to better themselves, every single day. Aby departs with all our good wishes as she embarks on her travels around SouthEast Asia.

Katie Dennison Miss Dennison is leaving us for wonderful adventures beyond the classroom. This is truly a loss for the College as she has been a glorious hockey coach and leader of CCF, an excellent tutor and boarding DHMM for New House, the Annex and Alexander, and a powerhouse in the geography classroom. She has made us laugh (a lot), calmed and comforted us, and inspired many. In short, she has been a commanding, beloved presence who has enriched all areas of school life and will be sorely missed by all who she taught, coached, cared for, and worked with.

Ms Eleanor Bourne

Helen Linkenbagh Helen joined Brighton College in 2018 and was a much-loved colleague with her can-do attitude, good humour and caring nature. A tutor in both the Lower School and Leconfield House, her HMMs could always rely on her fastidious approach to pastoral care and her whole house dance routines.

The pupils in her care, dancers and tutees, were always her priority. Her policy that ‘everyone can dance’ made for an entertaining watch when the 85 boys of Leconfield House had to brush up on their dance moves.

The Dance School went from success to success, with Helen supporting and coaching several pupils through audition processes to successfully gain places at some of the most prestigious national and international ballet schools, such as English National Ballet

Maria Le Brun Maria has been an excellent music teacher and Head of Creativity, Stretch and Challenge. From her work with the Symphony Orchestra and Fourth Form choir, to her management and creativity with the ever-growing Leonardo Competition, Maria has shown herself to be a creative and inspiring teacher for both her pupils and her colleagues. She has also actively sought to improve diversity within curricula across the school and increased awareness of women and people of colour within the arts, and has proven to be an outstanding colleague and mentor.

Nick Maloney Nick joined the college on a temporary basis in October 2017 to provide cover for the absent Joe Carr-Hill, and joined permanently in January 2018 to replace the departing Alan Bird. Over the six and a half years that he was at the college, he was an integral member of the economics department, and an academically rigorous teacher who inspired many pupils to apply for economics courses at university. He was a popular tutor in Hampden House for six years, he held the post of common room Treasurer

Elliott Mills Dr Mills has been on quite a journey since joining Brighton College.

He started as Mr Mills, completing his PhD at Trinity College Dublin alongside teaching, and leaves us having achieved a doctorate and going on to a research fellowship at Trinity College Dublin. In a way, this is a circular journey - something Dr Mills would probably enjoy interrogating in greater critical depth with his fan club, aka the Senior Literary Society - but one that he has spent nurturing pupils in the English classroom, on the rugby pitch (especially in U15 7s), in Alexander House, and beyond.

Matthew O’Hara Matthew joined Brighton College four years ago, stepping into the role of Teacher of Physics.

Throughout his tenure, Matthew has approached his responsibilities with charm, enthusiasm, and genuine care. His dedication and contributions have not gone unnoticed, leading to three well-deserved promotions: Head of Engineering, Deputy Head of Williams, and Deputy House Master of New House. In each of these positions, Matthew has excelled, offering valuable insights in his academic roles and fostering a safe and inspiring environment for the girls in the House. Matthew will be greatly missed by both teachers and pupils at the

College; Christ’s Hospital is lucky to be gaining an exceptional individual.

Ms Izzy Clarke

Julia Sands Joining the College after a distinguished career as an athlete, economist, historian and more recently Head of German at Sevenoaks, Julia leaves us after five years to spend time with her children before they start secondary school.

Though she will no doubt be pleased to avoid the famous Rottingdean bottleneck on her way into the College as Commander of the SandsBainbridge-Skeaping express, we will dearly miss her warmth, her infectious laugh and her unending enthusiasm.

Julia’s pupils in their valedictory messages of goodwill were unanimous in their thanks and gratitude for her energy and support, with ‘Sie sind meine Lieblingslehrerin’ (you are my favourite teacher) a Leitmotiv through the comments, with one pupil even describing her departure as ‘ein Albtraum’ (a nightmare).

Following her trips abroad to Berlin and Aachen, pupils re-emerged aghast at Julia’s boundless energy for pedagogy and her own thirst and interest for lifelong learning, from 9pm conversation practice before lights out, to enthusiastic re-enactments of historical discussions outside the Brandenburg Gate, Julia embodies how language teaching is about bringing a people, a culture and a history to life.

We wish her all the best for the year to come and look forward to hearing what a year of being ‘Sturmfrei’ (the experience of excitement and potential of having the house to yourself to think, work and reset) brings for her.

Chapel The academic year began with the usual round of Chapel services to welcome new pupils, with the Eucharist for new day pupils moving successfully from Sunday to Friday evening. Under Ms Reavey’s skilled direction, the College’s Chamber Choir contributed to the first of many memorable and excellent experiences during the year, both in Chapel and through visits to St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and Westminster Abbey.

The services led by the Chaplain have continued on Wednesday mornings, with the theme of each week turned into an online video ‘Thought for the Week’, edited versions of which can be seen on YouTube.

The College gathered for the traditional Act of Remembrance on November 11, and newcomers to the College from the Lower Third, Fourth and Lower Sixth forms, together with a number of family members, took part in a special service on Remembrance Sunday. The College’s traditional Grand Carol Service was hosted by St Mary’s, Kemp Town, and nearly 100 people gathered on Christmas Eve for our Midnight Eucharist.

January saw ‘Faith and Spirituality Week’ with the welcome return of Rabbi Gabriel Kanter-Webber as a guest speaker in Chapel, together with a newcomer to the College, the Reverend Anna Bouch.

The Christian Union, started and led by two pupils in the Lower Sixth, has been establishing itself as a friendly and supportive forum. It stands alongside Wednesday morning’s ‘Engage’ sessions, run by Mr Kennedy, which attract both those who are committed Christians and those who are exploring faith.

A solid core of pupils have enjoyed ‘Hot Chocolate and Night Prayer’, a welcome opportunity to pause, chat and then take part in prayer and stillness on Wednesday evenings. And Friday morning’s service of Holy Communion continues to offer spiritual refreshment for those who participate.

A highlight of the Trinity Term was the visit of the Bishop of Chichester for a service of Confirmation. Three candidates were confirmed and received excellent support from family and friends, including several of those who have been confirmed in the Chapel over the last few years.

Mr Chong took to the stage in the Great Hall, revealing the results of the heats to an attentive audience. The Head Master then articulated his vision of an astute and business-savvy pupil, encouraging the Lower Sixth to aspire to this ideal.

The tension was palpable as the aspiring entrepreneurs presented their innovative ideas. First in line were Ryle’s Rejuice, showcasing their eco-conscious approach with recycled batteries.

Following them, Fenwick’s Cuppa Corn took centre stage, unveiling their environmentally friendly origami cup that was not only compostable but also a testament to sustainable design.

Hampden’s OPAL captivated the audience next, presenting a groundbreaking voice-controlled assisted living package tailored for the elderly. The spotlight then shifted to Botanimist (New House), introducing their automatic plant ‘mister’ that promised to revolutionise plant care. School’s Thread Again followed suit, impressing the audience with their forward-thinking second-hand uniform service.

While all ideas received praise from the discerning panel of judges, it was Fenwick, New and Hampden who emerged victorious. Each winner was awarded £3,333 to further develop their promising products.

A heartfelt gratitude was extended to the esteemed panel of judges - Mick Rigby, Farshad Nowshadi, and Natalie Gray - for their valuable time and dedicated effort in evaluating and selecting the deserving winners.

Community, Charity and MADD There were again significant enlargements to our Primary School Pelican Club in 2023/4. We offered 11 different disciplines to the visiting pupils.

New subjects this year have included: PE, Chess, Debating and an upgrade to ‘European languages’ which incorporates some German alongside French. There have been 58 pupils attending regularly on Wednesday afternoons and this has been very well received within the community. There has continued to be positive feedback from returning parents.

We have continued our varied partnerships programme within the city.

Tea and Company continued at St Mary’s Church, as did a programme of lounge visits to residential homes in Kemptown: Evelyn Glennie Court and Patching Lodge. We have also worked with an initiative proposed by a Arts Council England funded programme called ‘with age comes,’ with residents of Lavender House. The pupils also began

undertaking some community work for a new Whitehawk Wellbeing Hub. The Wellesbourne GP Practice in Whitehawk has set up a new hub, St. David’s Hall, which has not been adequately maintained for the last decade. Pupils have been visiting on Wednesdays throughout the year to support the clearing and renovating of the space, including gardening and painting. It is hoped that this will be a long-term project, and that our pupils will be able to run quizzes and sessions in the Hub on Wednesday afternoons when the space is ready, and the service is up and running.

We also hosted our two large annual events, ‘Tea and Carols’ and the ‘Summer Celebration’ for our guests from local care homes, the Tea and Company partnership and refugee communities.

Our visitors enjoyed an afternoon tea, splendidly provided by our fantastic catering department, while being entertained by our choir and musicians.

This year we also hosted the inaugural Pelican Primary summer celebration – a party for our local primary schools.

The children had a wonderful time colouring and dancing the Macarena and left with goodie bags.

Make a Difference Day was held on 26 September 2023. Our newsletter was full of delightful accounts from pupils who found the day fulfilling and rewarding, as they bonded and worked together for the benefit of others. Projects ranged from painting a doggie day care centre, sports club upkeep, and supporting the Sacred Earth Community Benefit Society land project, Stanmer Park and Brighton Permaculture Trust. New projects and relationships with partner organisations were forged and there was some delightful feedback about our pupils’ attitudes and outlook from a range of different partners.

CCF The CCF has built on the strength of previous years and has had nearly 200 cadets on parade each week this year.

Thanks go as always to SSI Davies, our Head Cadet WO2 Jude Farrant and the NCOs for their help in ensuring the smooth running of the Contingent.

Army The Army section has once again offered a remarkable array of activities designed to cultivate leadership, enhance military knowledge, and teach essential first aid skills. This year, our Lower Fifth cadets fully immersed themselves in fieldcraft training at Crowborough Camp during the Michaelmas and Hilary field days.

They participated in various activities such as archery, laser combat, camouflage and concealment, shelter building, and cooking in the field. These experiences not only built their practical skills but also fostered teamwork and resilience. Our Upper Fifth and Upper Sixth NCOs took their training to the next level during an intensive overnight exercise at Pippingford Park Training Area. They set up harbour areas, honed their navigation skills, and executed reconnaissance exercises. These activities culminated in a series of section attacks the following day, providing invaluable experience in leadership and tactical planning. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly the annual summer camp in the Lake District, where cadets embarked

on a challenging four-day adventurous training programme that pushed them beyond their comfort zones. They engaged in climbing, abseiling, ghyll scrambling, and canyoning. This rigorous training not only tested their physical and mental limits but also strengthened their camaraderie and determination. As we look ahead, the experiences and skills gained by the cadets over the past year will undoubtedly serve as a solid foundation for their future endeavours.

The CCF remains committed to shaping resilient and effective leaders, equipped with the knowledge and skills to excel in any challenge they may face.

RAF The accomplishments of the RAF section this year have been extraordinary. Under the keen eye of FS Dexter and FS Conchar, our new L5th cadets have shown outstanding commitment in their studies, resulting in them achieving their First Class Cadet classification a whole term earlier

than expected. This meant that they were able to participate in additional exciting pursuits, including practical leadership activities, several radio exercises and space training. This year, our U5th and U6th NCOs participated in an RAF-only overnight exercise at Pippingford Park.

Utilising their fieldcraft training, they set up their own shelters, cooked their own military rations and participated in simulated tactical combat. All U5th cadets were able to complete their initial synthetic flight training on the flight simulator with Sgt Frescobaldi. A particular highlight of this year for 6th Form cadets was the incredible opportunity to visit the USAF base at Lakenheath and get up close to F15 fighter jets.

Navy The Navy section has been small but mighty this year under the leadership of PO Rumi Mansoubi. Field days have taken place at Hove Lagoon where a taster day of water-based activities was undertaken in October. In March, the L5th cadets visited the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth to visit the oldest flagship in the fleet, HMS Victory, along with HMS Warrior and a harbour tour. The tri-service summer camp was a highlight, allowing the cadets to push themselves outside of their comfort zones.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award I am always in awe of the pupils at Brighton College and their capacity to throw themselves into everything at school. After lessons and at weekends, over 160 pupils last year managed to spend an hour a week on a physical activity, from judo to netball to cycling.

They also managed to find time to learn new skills, from playing the flute to dress making, cooking to card games. But most impressive of all is the time pupils put into volunteering for one hour per week in the community: at local charity shops, Hove Rugby Club, helping neighbours or at local care homes. This takes commitment and shows that those enrolling on the Duke of Edinburgh Award at all levels have an outward looking view and strive to challenge themselves mentally and physically.

The end of the academic year is the climax for the expeditions. Over 100 Lower Fifth Bronze spent two hot days and a night navigating their way around their planned routes from Firle to Alfriston and then onto Friston Forest and the Seven Sisters, laden with water trangias and tents. It was very fortunate that one of the checkpoints just so happened to pass the pub that Mr

Davidson and Ms Roche were very near to. Thomas Brilliant even managed to get lost inside a tree! Although there were a couple of wrong turns, everyone arrived at camp well before dusk. Many groups passed a dead rat which was listed when their assessor asked them what flora and fauna they had seen en route. The cooking gets better every year and this year there was plenty of curry and sauces, hotdogs and pasta and chorizo. One group even went as far as frying garlic to make their sauce from scratch. The second day saw no incidents at all. Some groups set up the trangia at lunch to cook by Friston Pond and everyone sped up as the sight of the Cuckmere Haven was drawing closer.

The Silver (U5th) groups went to the Peak District and spent three days and two nights on their expedition around the peaks of Edale and Mam Tor. The weather was a little changeable and did require those all-important waterproofs, but everyone dried out at the campsite in the evening. The last day was a long but low-level walk finishing with a flourish towards the amazing setting of Chatsworth House. The groups were exhausted, but the setting made up for

such an adventure. An incredible end to a long summer of exams for the U5th.

The three L6th Gold Groups were challenged by the High Peaks, including Jacob’s Ladder, Kinder Scout, Kinder Downfall and Bleaklow. The second day is always the toughest and furthest from any roads, meaning three litres of water needed to be carried. Mr Connolly hid behind a hillock in the fog and sleet watching the groups go past on the top of Bleaklow. The reward for such a tough day is the wild campsite with just you, your friends, Madwoman’s stones in the distance, a curry and a trowel. The three groups finished and celebrated with hot chocolate at the end. It was a proud moment for Mr Harrison when Poppy Harrison finished her Gold, and there may have been a little tear or two… next stop Buckingham Palace for the Golds and their parents if they finish off their DofE logs…

‘ The children’s accomplishments have been extraordinary.’

The 2023-24 academic year has been a remarkable period of fun and achievement for the Third Form. Seeing the new Lower Thirds looking nervous on their first induction day seems like a very long time ago now. The new pupils quickly found their footing, excelling academically whilst exploring a wide array of co-curricular interests. The Upper Thirds found their groove and soon the common room was bustling with activity.

Throughout the year, friendships across the two year groups flourished during events like House Dodgeball, the musical production of Oliver, and the fiercely contested termly tutor group competitions. The Lower School pupils proved themselves to be a spirited cohort, consistently pushing their boundaries and entering writing, reading and science competitions. One standout moment was their impressive

performances in the Leonardo Competition, where their innovative projects dazzled both peers and parents.

From crafting intricate pieces to raise money for Lepra (Leprosy Relief Association), to performing selfcomposed music in the Young Musician of the Year competition, to dazzling families at the Film Concert, the children’s accomplishments have been extraordinary. As we prepare to say goodbye to the current Upper Thirds, we are confident in the strong legacy they leave behind. The foundation they have built over the past two years ensures they are well prepared for future successes in the Fourth Form. With a sense of anticipation and hope, we look forward to the coming year, certain that our pupils will continue to thrive and achieve wonderful things together.

Boarding Houses Abraham This year is particularly special for us as HMMs: in our fifth year we see our very first cohort of Fourth Form pupils graduate the College as curious, ambitious young adults. It felt fitting that Mr Kulin was able to lead his fourth ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ trip in June, with eight Abraham and former Abraham pupils joining together to trek up the three highest mountains in the UK within 24 hours.

Charity has been a particularly successful endeavour for us this year.

Our annual ‘Revive’ challenge led by our brilliant Deputy Housemaster, Mr Baughan, continues to grow in strength, raising over £2000. We also launched our first charity auction in Abraham @ Home, raising nearly £3000 for CALM. Amongst many tutor trips into Brighton, games of pool and HMM waffle nights,

it’s tempting to think that Abraham is all fun, but our pupils have developed a reputation for working hard. Often at the forefront of effort awards in reports, we know our pupils put their all into their day-to-day studies.

Abraham thrives as an inclusive and diverse House; we are proud that our pupils embrace every individual’s unique talents and celebrate those who push themselves out of their comfort zone.

which they have embraced our core House values and adopted our familyorientated approach. The effort they invested into the Halloween Party was true testament to their willingness to be involved, a trait that has endured throughout the year as bonds between the two years groups have deepened.

To our Upper Sixth Leavers, we say a fond farewell, while we eagerly look forward to welcoming the Lower Sixth back next year.

Fenwick Fenwick House started the school year with a dinner in the Lanes of Brighton to celebrate their House Cup victory from the previous summer. This dinner, along with the traditional preparations for House Song, enabled new and existing pupils to form closer bonds and strengthen the spirit within Fenwick.

House Cup events are always a great source of excitement and although Fenwick are usually in the middle of the pack for most competitions, the girls did triumph in Senior House Hockey and House Cross Country.

The House have been fortunate to have such a dedicated and lovely Upper Sixth who have ensured House Family events and evenings are packed with fun, laughter and sometimes snacks. Regular features of evenings in Fenwick this year have included FOMO nights, hot chocolate socials and Mario Kart competitions. The House Family Cup has brought different year groups together with each House Family competing across a variety of events, such as a bake off, the bin liner challenge and rounders.

It has been another hugely successful year in Fenwick and every member of the House can be proud of their contributions to ensuring it is such a cohesive and warm community.

Head’s Head’s House has enjoyed a tremendously successful 2024, full of charitable endeavour, sporting excellence and youthful exuberance.

In February the Upper Sixth boys ran the Brighton Half Marathon, raising over £11,000 for Papyrus, a men’s mental health charity, and the Lower Sixth set up the inaugural Charity House Darts event.

The House has had boys in all the main sporting 1st teams and all the Fourth Form have once again pulled on the Pelican to represent the College at something.

Hughie Fleming has led from the front as an outstanding Head of House, and he has helped the Fourth Form settle well into a confident group of young men. He has been ably supported by a brilliant year of Upper Sixth boys who we will deeply miss; their kind and conscientious

attitude is what makes Head’s House such a special place.

They all worked exceptionally hard for their A-levels as did our Upper Fifth for their GCSEs, who all peaked at precisely the correct time; I wish them all the very best in August. We are looking forward to welcoming the new Fourth Form in 2024-25 and showing them what it means to be Headonian!

New The New House girls have again shown huge House spirit and camaraderie throughout the year, raising over £17,000 for our House Charities: Refuge and Papyrus. Fundraising opportunities have included the inaugural New House Triathlon, New House Play and the

‘Camp Out,’ giving each of the girls a chance to be outward looking and to make a difference to others in need.

Brilliantly led by Head of House, Stella Evans, and a dynamic group of Upper Sixth girls, the House has built on the success of last year, with notable wins in the House Cup competition, in the Leonardo, Junior House Football and a huge improvement of second in the House Song competition, and third overall at Sports Day. I am proud of all the girls in New House for continuing to ensure that the House is a place of warmth and support of one another, with each of the girls championed and valued for who they are. Nowhere was this more noticeable than at the House at Home event in the Trinity Term which was a fitting way to celebrate the diverse talent of the girls with parents and staff alike.

School It has been another special year in School House where the boys continue to live out the House ethos of kindness, respect, and community. The boys throw themselves into all aspects of school life and I am incredibly proud to see the numbers involved in sports fixtures, drama productions, music ensembles and academic clubs on a weekly basis.

Within the House we have held some fantastic events including Curry Night,

the Christmas party, House at Home, House Dinner at Hotel du Vin and the ever popular Pork and Pimms. It is always brilliant to bring the whole School House family together and celebrate our successes.

The House Cup has once again been a place of dominance with School House leading the competition from the very start of term. Victories in house

swimming, the John Pope Relays and the Leonardo Competition have all been particular highlights.

School House is a very special place to live and work and I am proud of the fact that every boy can be themselves and are supported by a wonderful House team.

Day Houses Aldrich Aldrich can claim victory in Oddballs as well as fine performances in other House sporting competitions, such as in swimming and football. A highlight of the year included ‘Aldrich at Home’ in which our amazingly talented musicians entertained parents to raise almost £3,000 for the charity Samara’s Aid Appeal to help refugees in Syria. As we ate and drank, the boys conducted an auction, and one lucky parent won the top prize of a day out on a yacht! Alongside this, a series of poker games proved immensely popular, raising excitement to fever pitch. Earlier in the year, the boys enjoyed house supper at Côte restaurant with a hotly contested quiz. Meanwhile, Aldrich has developed a growing garden of house plants and, hopefully, this will eventually make the House resemble a natural jungle.

We say goodbye to our Head of House, Johnny Prior, who cannot fail to charm anyone he encounters, encouraging the younger boys to join in the wonderful House spirit that celebrates abilities and personalities of all types. Alongside the Upper Sixth leavers, the year ended with my departure, and we look forward to welcoming Dr Sarah Field in the new academic year of 2024-5.

sporting and academic competitions, all while participating in various school events with the understanding that taking part is more important than the outcome.

This spirit encouraged the girls to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new experiences.

The year kicked off with the House Song competition, uniting all the girls for a spirited and energetic rendition of Man Eater, choreographed and directed by our Upper Sixth team after three weeks of practice. The year concluded with Sports Day, where numerous personal bests were achieved, and Chichester proudly took home the cup.

Collaborations with other Houses for social events were a hit among both students and staff. Highlights included the House ‘Boarders’ Breakfast,’ reading on beanbags in the Quad, mixed House assemblies, and the ever-popular Biscuit Wednesday, which attracted many guests from sister Houses.

This year our House charity was RISE, a local Brighton organisation dedicated to supporting women and families affected by domestic abuse. Chichester took a leading role in organising Strictly Come Dancing, ensuring that all proceeds, including the judges’ fees, were donated to RISE. This charity has a special significance for our House, and we are committed to continuing our support through various fundraising efforts in the coming year.

Durnford Durnford House has enjoyed another year of successful House competitions, social events, and charity initiatives. The House events saw the boys win junior basketball and come in the top three in the Leonardo Competition, House swimming, cross country, and Sports Day. More boys than ever took part this year, as evidenced by the 40 talented performers in the House dance show. The charity events saw the

boys raise over £5,000 for My Name’5 Doddie’ MND foundation and the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity by walking, swimming, cycling, and running over many kilometres. Both charities are brilliant causes and the Durnford family came together to raise both funds and awareness for these foundations.

The social events saw the usual mix of fun including our House meal at Côte, tutor group breakfasts, bouldering with the Lower Fifth, and golf at Globalls. House Song was the highlight of the year for many of the boys, and they performed Hips Don’t Lie by Shakira in a creditable sixth position. The House prefects and pupil leadership was tremendous this year and Head of House Alex Barkshire created a House spirit that sets the tone for the new pupil leaders to maintain.

Hampden Hampden has had another tremendous year of House competitions and social events. At the time of writing, we are second in the House Cup! The year got off to a fantastic start with the Lower Sixth entrepreneurship team making the final list of winners for the third year running. The pupils also acquitted themselves honourably on Sports Day, gaining second place overall. This sadly marks an end to Hampden’s five-year winning streak but has galvanised the pupils ahead of next year’s competition.

Fundraising for House charities has been a particular strength this year, with a wide range of charities supported including Revive International, Amaze Sussex, and the OddBalls Foundation. We are hugely grateful to all Hampden parents for their generous support.

Amid all of the achievements, what has pleased me most is the inclusive and welcoming culture the Hampden pupils have created, which is the sum total of simple interactions between pupils of different year groups, friendships, and interests. No small amount of the credit for this is due to our fantastic Head and Deputy Head of House, Jake and Billy, who have led Hampden with diligence and confidence, and –most importantly – by example.

All the boys got involved in competitions, trying their best which led the House to many victories and to name but a few: Leconfield managed to keep a firm grip on the House maths’ competition with Philip Chan once again clinching the trophy; Sam A, Billy W and Phillip A (U5th) won the Senior House Film competition and an outstanding performance in House Chess blew away any competition from our Grand Masters.

Our successes in these competitions were matched by House Charity. A proud moment was the fundraising for a MND charity alongside the Kenny Logan Challenge. Leconfield cycled the equivalent distance of Edinburgh-Paris in a competition with Durnford. The result was a brilliant fundraising success only improved by Leconfield

comfortably beating Durnford, despite what Durnford might say…. The boys continued to raise funds at Sports Day and the Dance Show where they sold food and beverages to raise money for MIND, our chosen local charity.

Overall, a brilliant year for Leconfield with amazing success combined with, most importantly, a positive atmosphere.

Ryle In my second year as House Master of Ryle House, our focus was on communication, connections, and kindness, fostering an environment where awareness of others was paramount. The House spirit thrived on mutual support and respect, creating a tight-knit

community where friendships continue to flourish. This spirit of camaraderie was matched by a hallmark competitiveness, evident in their relentless pursuit of excellence. This was particularly showcased in the House Song competition where, despite fierce rivalry, the boys’ dedication and hard work secured third place – a testament to their talent and determination.

Beyond competitions, Ryle House demonstrated a strong commitment to social responsibility. Their support for the Brighton Women’s Centre charity highlighted their desire to make a positive impact. This focus on charity fostered a sense of purpose and collective pride among House members, celebrating the inspirational women in our lives and those who needed support the most.

In summary, our goal was to cultivate a House ethos where everyone felt heard and, more importantly, happy. While we faced challenges, I am confident that as we continue to grow in age and experience, we will strive to be resilient, compassionate, and united in our pursuit of excellence and positive change.

Seldon Seldon started the year in triumphant form by winning House Song with a brilliant rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’. The dance choreography, led by Maya Fieldhouse, was slick and the vocals, led by Avianna Clarke, were harmonious yet feisty!

Florence Corbould as Head of House presided over proceedings with her characteristic energy and House spirit and her manifestation of ‘Seldon Will Soar!’ at the end of last year came true.

The Fourth Form have established themselves as a year group to be reckoned with, coming first in the Junior

girls’ competition on Sports Day and showing fantastic commitment in all House events this year. We have a number of very talented actors in Seldon, and it was wonderful to watch many of them take leading roles in Into the Woods, A Monster Calls and Two. This year also saw the inaugural Seldon ball, which was a great success and which raised over £2,500 for Whoopsadaisy. It has been a huge pleasure and privilege to serve as Seldon HMM for the past five years and I

have every confidence that Seldon will continue to sail forth confidently with Mrs Emily Nemeth at the helm!

The Upper Sixth prefects, with their exceptional leadership skills, led the house with confidence and kindness, setting a positive tone for the entire year.

Williams continues to be a rich tapestry of diverse talents. The girls excel in various fields such as sports, creative arts, robotics, academics, and performing arts, among many others.

Our House spirit has dazzled at all events, showcasing the beautiful support the girls have for each other and their love for red face paint! This unity was

particularly evident during our charity initiatives. We continued our efforts for the Teenage Cancer Trust, successfully raising £3,000 over the past two years through our beloved ‘Thursday Tea and Toast’ tradition. This year also saw the introduction of a new charity initiative: The Purple People Food Bank collection.

The enthusiasm and generosity from all year groups have made this a significant success, further strengthening our community bond.

House Cup The 2023-24 House Cup competition was a highly competitive year with every single House winning at least one of the 30 events.

Highlights included House Song, won by Seldon (with Leconfield placed the top boys House); the mass participation House Cross Country where Fenwick and School House were triumphant; and the plethora of sporting competitions including a renewed format for House Swimming which was won

by Williams and School House. This year also saw the inaugural House Dance competition where each group created and performed original choreography, and Chichester and School House ended up winners. We hope that the fantastic atmosphere created in the Great Hall for this new event will see this competition grow over the coming years.

The overall totals for the girls’ competition saw Fenwick and New House being split by just 2 points; Fenwick finished the year in second place with 263 points while New House were overall winners with 265 points.

The boys’ competition ended up being a comprehensive victory for School House who finished the year with 346 points, with the next placed House almost 100 points behind.

Art and Photography We celebrated the inventive and original work of our Upper Sixth fine art and photography pupils at the end of term.

The A-level summer exhibition is always one of the highlights in the departments’ creative calendar, and it was exciting to be able to invite so many pupils, parents, friends, and teachers into our gallery space to view the work on display.

With a record number of our artists going on to study visual arts-related courses at foundation and degree level, there was a diverse range of themes explored. Architecture has also been a key focus for several of our pupils, who have secured places to study it at Cambridge, Sheffield, and Nottingham.

The exhibition showcased the range of ideas and talent that our pupils have developed over the past two years. We are so proud of their achievements and how personal their interpretations are. Everyone has created a project that is authentic and personal to them, and the range and depth of outcomes is a real testament to this.

The studios have been incredibly busy all year with pupils from all year groups enjoying the space. As a department we have enjoyed taking a moment to reflect on how much brilliant work has been made and start to plan and look forward to next year’s cohorts’ creative journey.

Dance It has been an incredibly exciting year for the dance department culminating in the spectacular end of year Dance Show, held at The Cairns Theatre at the College.

300 pupils took to the stage to perform thrilling pieces inspired by A Night at the Movies; from Bond to Toy Story and Saturday Night Fever to Aladdin, all pupils performed with infectious energy with their joy of dance clear to see.

The dance department are delighted to move into The Cairns Building next term; the dance studio and theatre are truly inspiring spaces which foster creativity and nurture dance talent to new levels, whilst providing many exciting new performance opportunities.

Our annual Strictly Come Dancing competition was a resounding success this year with twelve Lower Sixth pupils creating dazzling Latin and Ballroom routines in the Quickstep, Jive, Salsa, American Smooth, Charleston, and Cha Cha. It was a tight competition and a spectacular evening of entertainment, with Bee Hughes (New) and Ben Sanders (School) ultimately crowned the new Strictly champions.

The Senior Show Team have gone from strength to strength this year, performing their dynamic jazz piece Jumpin’ Jack at the launch event for The Richard Cairns Building in collaboration with the Music department. The Show Team have also competed in solos, duets, and group dances at prestigious competitions throughout the year. Aidan Scanlon (Fourth Form, Ryle) and Bella Dillon (Fourth Form, Chichester) were awarded 1st place for their Modern duet at the Royal Tunbridge Wells Dance Festival, and Bee Hughes (Lower Sixth, New) and Maya Keeling (Lower Sixth, Williams) were awarded 1st place for their Modern duet at the Sussex Festival of Performing Arts. Both duets also took the trophy for the highest mark awarded in their age group at the respective competitions.

We are incredibly proud of all dance school pupils for their commitment to lessons and rehearsals this year and look forward to an exciting year ahead for Dance.

Drama The Young Playwrights’ Festival that welcomes the start of the year’s drama programme goes from strength to strength.

A packed Montague Studio watched three brilliant and bold plays written and directed by three budding playwrights from the Upper Sixth. The impressive casts of pupils from the Lower Sixth brought their words vividly to life. We were all taken aback by the maturity of the work: with stories of entrapment, shattered dreams, loyalty and the perfect cup of tea, it was an unforgettable evening of theatre. Eloise Yule’s play was also longlisted by the National Theatre for their New Views competition: quite the achievement. Indeed, new writing is a real jewel in our crown, and we already have eight playwrights writing for next year’s competition.

The Senior Production of Into the Woods was a triumph. With over 70 pupils involved in the acting, orchestra, design, and technical crew it was a wonderfully collaborative experience across the music and drama departments. It was a mighty challenge to embark on this heralded musical; Stephen Sondheim’s work is notoriously challenging, not always adhering to the standards of melodic simplicity but being driven by the complex dialogue that is unique to each character. The drive and dedication of all involved to bring a show of this epic scale to life was so impressive, and the teamwork and talent of the pupils made this a truly memorable show.

In March, the Middle School production of A Monster Calls, adapted from the critically acclaimed bestseller, offered a dazzling insight into love and healing.

The large ensemble from the 4th and

L5th Form told this truly heartbreaking tale of a teenager’s struggle to deal with his mother’s terminal illness with such bravery and maturity. It was a clear example of how there is a vital place for modern drama in our repertoire. The monster, a realisation of the child’s fears, was created using rope hanging from the rig, and entwined to create dream-like imagery. Pupils were taught aerial skills so they could safely climb up the rope and be suspended high above the stage. Physical theatre was used highly effectively throughout to go beyond the naturalistic dialogue.

The Trinity Term heralded a new dawn for drama at the College with the grand opening of the Richard Cairns Building!

We were amazed and delighted to finally peer behind the curtain of scaffolding to see the beautifully crafted theatre and spacious rehearsal rooms and classrooms.

As one door opens, another shuts with a brilliant bang – we said goodbye to the Montague Studio with the triumphant Lower Sixth production of Jim Cartwright’s Two. Expertly directed by Divyesh Thakerar with Lucia Collado, the narrative

was superbly told by an ensemble of Lower Sixth actors through inventive storytelling and vibrant physicality.

It seemed timely that the celebrated film producer David Hayman should be the guest speaker at the opening of the new theatre as filmmaking continues to go from strength to strength at the College.

We had four pupils volunteer to enter the London Schools’ Film Competition and we were delighted to hear that they won the category for Best Junior Film and Best Special Effects. The pupils were overjoyed and the awards ceremony in London was an event they will never forget. For the College to be winning national film competitions is some achievement, and it is joyous to see such successes after only introducing cocurricular filmmaking four years ago.

The Lower School Production of Oliver! JR. was also a huge success. With over 40 pupils involved in the cast and crew this was a true example of ensemble theatre.

As is the ethos of the production, the pupils took real ownership of the work being created, helping devise, stage manage and design the play. Their reinterpretation

was directed with aplomb by Dermot Keaney, and for the performances to be the first in the new theatre was extra special for all those involved. It was the perfect coda to an impressive programme of plays this academic year.

Other highlights this year were numerous, and we were overjoyed to learn that Upper Sixth pupil Venetia Street has successfully auditioned for the Bristol Old Vic Foundation, the University of Southern California and New York Tisch School of Arts to study acting. Eloise Yule will also study Film and Television at Bond University in Australia. Poppy Hillier in the Upper Fifth and Harrison du Hampton in the Fourth Form successfully auditioned for the highly competitive and much respected National Youth Theatre and will begin their training this summer. As well as success on stage and screen, our young playwrighting scheme (New Views – developed by the National Theatre) goes from strength-tostrength with Alana Duffy from the Lower Sixth being longlisted by the National Theatre for her play.

Music Within our music school, there is a bustling environment with pupils immersed in lessons, rehearsals, and practice sessions, all contributing to a vibrant and positive atmosphere.

A plethora of recitals and concerts happened in abundance across the year, featuring an incredible number of musical opportunities and performances, including the Autumn Concert, Scholars recitals, Lower School Christmas Concert, the school production of Into the Woods, the Grand Carol Service, the Young Musician of the Year competition, Choral Society Concerts, Singers’ Recitals, a Celebration of Film concert, House Song, Jazz Café, An Evening of Song, Battle of the Bands, and a flute recital to name but a few. We also hosted our series of Autograph concerts, which included world renowned musical artists including the Kenneh-Mason Trio and Apollo5.

The opening of the new Richard Cairns Building was a remarkable celebration of the performing arts, showcasing some of the school’s premier groups and ensembles. The Chamber Choir delivered two outstanding performances, while the swing band accompanied the Dance Show team, resulting in a spellbinding and professional production. One of our star pianists performed three Rachmaninov preludes on the new Steinway concert grand piano, mesmerising the audience with his talent.

A standout moment of the year was the Chamber Choir’s mini concert tour to London. They had the honour of leading evensong at Westminster Abbey for two consecutive nights and performed at the Royal College of Music’s recital venue St Mary Abbots.

The “Evening of Song” with the Chamber Choir in a packed Sarah Abraham Recital Hall was another delightful event. The choir’s unique repertoire shone, with highlights including Jonathan Dove’s Seek Him that maketh the Seven Stars, Laura Mvula’s Sing to the Moon, and a poignant rendition of Elton John’s “Your Song.” Original

compositions by our talented pupils added a special touch, culminating in a powerful performance of Queen’s Somebody to Love.

Our Young Musician of the Year winners showcased their talents in the first half of the Choral Society concert at St George’s Church, Kemptown. Their performances of demanding works, including, Mozart’s Violin Concerto in G major and Haydn’s Cello Concerto in D major, accompanied by a full orchestra, were both professional and mature. The Choral Society continued with a stunning rendition of Haydn’s Nelson Mass.

The Brighton College Swing Band’s annual Jazz Café event in the SSS Atrium was a lively evening of jazz, swing, and soul. It was also a bittersweet farewell to our Upper Sixth swing band members. The band played an array of music from Earth, Wind & Fire to Count Basie, closing with Chick Corea’s ‘Spain,’ which had the audience dancing and clapping.

The final Scholars’ Recital of the year highlighted our younger musicians, showcasing incredible emerging talent.

The Flute Recital featured 30 flautists in solo and ensemble pieces, demonstrating the depth of their musical talent. The Summer Soiree in the Sarah Abraham Recital Hall was another impressive concert, featuring several ensembles including the Junior Swing Band, Brass Ensemble, String Chamber Groups, Young Voices Choir, and Sinfonia Orchestra.

As always, we would like to thank the dedicated enthusiasm, talent and commitment from pupils and staff alike in the music school, who all contribute to providing such a vibrant environment.

‘A particular highlight was seeing three of our track and field cup teams ranked within the top ten schools in the region.’

Athletics The BC Athletics Club enjoyed a great term of competition where our pupils succeeded in enhancing the Pelican’s reputation as one of the strongest Athletics teams in the Southeast. A particular highlight was seeing three of our track and field cup teams ranked within the top ten schools in the region.

As the season draws to a close, a big mention must go to our Upper Sixth leavers, in particular our captains Billy Horsbrugh and Natalie McEvoy who have represented the club and led by example throughout the term. They will be missed, but we also look forward to appointing next year’s leaders, who I am sure will continue their work.

The club succeeded in maintaining their high standards across each of our traditional fixtures. Highlights include retaining the Pelican Shield and a strong showing for the Boys in Harrow who came 2nd and the Girls at Hurst who came 1st.

This term also saw two new school records.

Estelle Schwarz broke the Senior girls’ shot-put record and Emilie Deighton broke the Senior girls’ discus record. We hope to see these records improved even further next season.

A record-breaking number of BC athletes were also selected to represent Brighton, Hove and Portslade at the Sussex Schools Championships. Our athletes competed well with ten athletes selected to represent Sussex at an inter counties match.

Sports Day was once again a great success.

It was brilliant to see so many pupils giving it their all in the sunshine for their houses.

Highlights from the day include the highly competitive hurdles and the middle-distance races where there were some close finishes.

Cricket The Cricket Club started the season during the Easter holidays, by taking the boys’ and girls’ 1st XI cricketers for a pre-season training camp. The pupils had fantastic preparation ahead of the first block fixtures in early April.

The boys’ 1st XI had a fantastic season.

Having been unbeaten in all block fixtures this year, they travelled to Arundel to play in the boys’ independent schools 100 ball cup final, where they lost off the last ball. The boys’ U14, U15 teams have all performed brilliantly with the U15A team narrowly losing in the U15 Cup final.

Girls’ cricket continues to thrive at the College with the U14, U15 and senior age groups all enjoying a full season of fixtures.

Many of our pupils are involved in different pathways around the country and we have two academy representatives in the boy’s 1st XI. The boys’ 1st XI travelled to Sedbergh School for the annual BOWS cricket festival, hoping to emulate last year’s win, and ultimately finished as runners up. The girls, attending their BOWS festival at Wellington College, went one better and won the competition for the first time.

There is great excitement around the Cricket Club regarding getting the Home Ground back for matches in 2025. The pitches and ground will be incredible and the envy of all cricketing schools around the country.

Football The football season finished successfully as the 1st XI, U16A, U16B, and U14A teams all won their respective Sussex and Kent Independent Schools titles. The inclement weather did its best to postpone many matches during the season, but the boys prevailed, and the success of the club is down to their commitment to training and playing the rearranged matches.

The ISFA and ESFA cups saw the 1st XI come up against some strong

opponents, unfortunately losing to Whitgift and Winchester College in the second round of both competitions. The season saw more boys than ever joining football for their games session, and the Upper Sixth finished off their year in style by beating the Lower Sixth in a highly competitive friendly match.

In the Lower Fifth and Fourth Form joint competition, New House proved too strong for everyone with Fenwick House finishing in second place. The club would like to thank all the coaches and players for their tremendous efforts once again in an enjoyable and successful season.

The House football matches were as combative as usual, with Chichester claiming the title for the second successive year in the senior girls’ event.

Hockey The 2023-24 hockey season proved to be a successful one, with all 16 teams regularly participating in fixtures and enjoying the game. As a club, the girls claimed most block fixtures, and were committed more than ever to the sport and their teammates. The standout performance of the term came against Sevenoaks, winning all but one game across the 11 fixtures.

All the senior girls should be congratulated on their efforts across the past five years when wearing the navy and claret strip and I hope many will continue to play their hockey beyond Sixth Form.

Netball The Netball Club had a strong season with over 220 girls representing the College at various fixtures. The girls worked hard on their new strength and conditioning plans to stay fit and strong throughout the season which saw them maintain strong results throughout the season. The 1st VII highlight was winning the ISNC National Plate final in a thrilling final vs The Grammar School, Leeds. They also had solid performances in the Bradfield Tournament, Seaford 7s and Kelsall tournament.

The Upper Fifth had a strong season to retain their SISNA title and also qualifying for the Sisters in Sport National Plate Finals, beating Millfield School in a thrilling quarter-final. The Lower Fifth had a solid year finishing runners up in both the Sussex Cup and Kelsall Tournament.

The Fourth Form played some great netball in their Sussex Cup final to finish their first netball term at the College on a high, taking a welldeserved win. All the girls represented the club admirably on and off the courts and should be very proud of their efforts.

Rugby The Rugby Club were quick to regain momentum this season with 16 teams playing on Saturdays, with over 350 pupils playing competitive fixtures every week, with A – D teams in all year groups. Boys have continued to work hard, get strong and stay fit supporting their own and others wellbeing along the way. This year the Club won every block fixture apart from one which was incredible achievement, showing the high levels of participation and performance.

Fourth form made a huge amount of progress during the season learning the ‘Brighton College way ‘and impressed in the 7s season at the end of term, working out how to play this format of the game.

Lower Fifth continued to develop well, playing some exciting Rugby with the highlight being the Langley Festival showing resilience and some mental toughness finishing plate runners up.

The Upper Fifth had an amazing ‘value added’ year, turning around so many results from their last competitive season and playing some amazing Rugby along the way and were runners up at Gordon’s 7s: in the plate at the All England 7s.

The Senior year group were a real highlight with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XV winning every single match and the 4th XV only losing one match. This is a remarkable achievement from everyone involved and has never happened before! The 1st VII won the South Coast 7s beating Millfield in the final and then came 13th overall at Rosslyn Park 7s.

They were brilliant at the Sedbergh National Schools Tens, losing on the last play in the final to hosts Sedbergh.

Six Senior boys have represented Harlequins U17/18s, with Harry Browne and Jonny Smith representing the England and Scotland U20s respectively.

There are currently 6 Old Brightonians in the Harlequins men’s 1st team squad, including Marcus Smith playing for England in the Rugby World Cup and 6 Nations.

More importantly all the current Brighton College players have enjoyed their rugby whilst representing the club admirably on and off the field and should be proud of their efforts this year.

Tennis ‘ The U15 Girls won their preliminary county group, qualifying them for the national competition this coming autumn.’

The Tennis Club has seen a successful summer term. This season has seen positive results against Eastbourne College, Worth School, Ardingly and Lancing College.

The girls U14 team performed the best over these fixtures with a clean sweep of wins, with Anna Robson and Allegra Vernaduchi leading the charge with some excellent tennis.

The U18 boys also had some impressive results only losing 1 match all season, with Will Hepher and Anderson Liang playing some outstanding tennis throughout.

The club also achieved success in the National Cup with the U18 girls advancing to the semi-final and the U15 girls winning their preliminary county group, qualifying them for the national competition this coming autumn.

There was also success in the Sussex Shield tournaments with the U15 and U14 girls winning their respective events and U15 boys reaching the final. Many thanks to all players, parents and coaches who have been involved in this memorable season.

Lower School The inaugural year of our combined sports programme with BCPS has been an extraordinary triumph, uniting 195 pupils into a formidable force on Wednesday afternoons. This collaboration has elevated our teams’ strength and depth, leading to exceptional accomplishments across various sports.

The football and hockey term introduced pupils to the combined programme, with the boys progressing well in the ISFA Trophy and the girls dominating their block fixtures. The girls’ netball teams shone, winning the Hurst and Windlesham

tournaments with both U13 and U12 teams reaching the Sussex Cup finals.

In rugby, the U13 boys were victorious at the Worth rugby festival and also, reached the Sussex Cup final. In cricket we saw our teams deliver performances in several blocks and the U13 team again, reached the Sussex Cup final. Our track and field athletes made headlines, with the girls’ team advancing to the regional finals of the Track & Field Cup. This year has been a resounding success, marked by significant achievements and a foundation for future excellence.

The integration with the Prep School has enhanced our competitive edge and fostered unity. As we look ahead, we anticipate more accomplishments, building on this remarkable inaugural year.

The Opening of the Richard Cairns Building

The 19 April marked the formal opening of The Richard Cairns Building. We were delighted to welcome pupils, parents, Old Brightonians, Headteachers and friends to the College to celebrate the opening of this extraordinary new development at the school.

Guests were captivated by our pupils’ awe-inspiring showcase of the past year’s performing arts highlights, before enjoying guided tours of the new building and a celebratory dinner.

Perfectly located on the Home Ground next to the Nicola Leach Music School, this development has transformed our school community. Designed by the innovative architect firm krft, the new facility includes:

Our guest of honour for the evening was the distinguished and award-winning film producer David Heyman, renowned for his work on the Harry Potter series of movies and, more recently, Barbie and Wonka.

David shared heartfelt remarks about the importance of the arts, of working collaboratively, and the wonderful memories that can be created on the stage.

The Davies School of Science On 18 April, a group of teachers and Lower Sixth pupils welcomed Dr Anthony Davies (Ha. 1977-82) and Dr Lauren Shapiro to the School of Science and Sport for the opening of The Davies School of Science.

During his time at Brighton, Anthony was a keen sportsman and musician alongside his studies. Upon graduating from the College, he attended the University of Cambridge where he read Natural Sciences before commencing his PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham.

In the morning Fourth Form pupils were inspired by a lesson from Anthony about the science industry, before attending

a reception where he was joined by some of the former teachers who had inspired him – Simon Smith (CR. 1973-2011), Martin Jones (CR. 1977-98), Anthony Whitestone (CR. 1971-2006), and John Prideaux (CR. 1971-2009).

Before the unveiling, Dr Anthony Davies met Dr Barney Davies (Director of Science), and the pair joked about not quite knowing who the new science school was named after.

We are enormously grateful to Anthony and Lauren for their incredible support of teaching facilities at Brighton College, and for travelling from Colorado to join us for the special event.

The Leonardo Competition

Awards and Prizes We are hugely grateful to the Brighton community members who generously sponsor awards and prizes, encouraging our pupils to excel academically, engage with their local communities, and step outside of their comfort zones. These awards reflect the College’s core values of kindness, curiosity and confidence.

The Leonardo Creative Competition also saw remarkable success this year, with New House proudly retaining their trophy. It was a record-breaking year for pupil participation, with an impressive 683 entries. For the first time, the competition expanded beyond the senior school, with families from Brighton College Prep Schools and International Schools participating to great success.

The Ros Nichol Award The Ros Nichol Award, established in memory of Rosh Nichol, who was a much-loved modern languages teacher, recognises pupils for their efforts beyond the classroom. This year Hugo Dalley, Datis Reyhani, Ayumi Takaichi and YuNing Chin were honoured with the award for their outstanding projects, which ranged from creating an innovative reading tool for visually impaired people to participating in a climate change forum in Accra, Ghana.

Opening Doors The David Gold Respect Prize The David Gold Respect Prize was awarded to Siraj Mehdi for his leadership in an art project that engaged the local elderly community, encouraging them to create art for mental well-being. The Garner-Smith Prize was presented to our outgoing Head of School, Kathleen Keaney, and the Pete Bellenger Memorial Prize was awarded to Kitty Qi and Tarik Cil for their passion for science. This prize will enable them to participate in exciting scientific excursions, such as shadowing a prominent biology professor.

The Dudley Moore Prize in Classics We extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous sponsors of The Dudley Moore Prize in Classics, awarded this year to Connie Digges.

In September, we were thrilled to welcome 12 new Opening Doors scholars to the Sixth Form. These remarkable young people have each faced significant challenges, including hardship, deprivation, or displacement. They receive a 110% funded bursary, which covers not only school fees but also trips, new uniform, and study materials.

Our outgoing Opening Doors scholars have excelled in their studies, achieving outstanding results. They are now set to attend some of the UK’s top universities, with pupils going on to study subjects such as English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford, and Economics and Finance at the University of Bristol.

Crucially, the success of our scholars goes beyond academic achievement. Thanks to a robust pastoral support system, expertly overseen by Mr Martin Lewis, our scholars thrive in all aspects of school life. They are actively encouraged to push previously self-imposed boundaries, to take on leadership roles and to take pride in

participating in the wide range of clubs and sports available at the College. This holistic approach fosters confidence at a pivotal time in their lives. One pupil recently wrote to Mr Lewis about the impact his scholarship has had on his self-esteem: “I’ve always struggled with making friends… but I realised recently it’s no longer true. I’ve made more amazing friends in the last 18 months than in my last two schools combined. And that, above all else, is why I’m so grateful to have been awarded the scholarship.”

Supporting Brighton College

Brighton College Society It was another exciting year for the Brighton College Society, starting with a bespoke dining event at Tutto Italian restaurant in Brighton. The menu, designed exclusively for our event, promised a rich Italian experience and it certainly did not disappoint. A gorgeous sharing menu highlighting the famous Alba white truffle. The wines were paired by Hallgarten Wines, who also provided an entertaining introduction to each course to the delight of parents and teachers alike.

We shared a horticultural experience at Kew Gardens in March, with engaging and expert tour guides talking us

through highlights from the glasshouses and the exclusive collection. Parents loved the expert knowledge and serene surroundings of the collection, and enjoyed a great opportunity to chat to each other over delicious cake on site.

Comedy Night took place this year in November, and the food, drinks and laughs kept flowing. Another stellar line-up featuring award-winners from the comedy circuit, Ceyla AB and James Ellis plus TV panel show regulars Toussaint Douglass and Alex Kealy, the night was compered by local comedy guru, Stephen Grant, whose quick thinking kept us all on our toes.

Following our ever-popular Burns Night Supper and Ceilidh, in February, our tour of the Houses of Parliament sold out in record-breaking time as parents relished the opportunity to explore the historic corridors of power. Corridors of a different kind were explored in our Brighton Pavilion tunnel tour, a fascinating glimpse at the hidden history of Brighton’s most recognisable building.

Update on The London Academy of Excellence monarch, after members had enjoyed a fascinating visit around London’s Postal Museum.

Our ever-popular Virtual Lecture Series saw Brighton College’s own intellectual talent – Mr Joe Skeaping, Mr Michael Jones and Dr Sam Schusman – share academic insights into their areas of expertise.

In June, Society members enjoyed a glorious wine tasting in the beautiful setting of Wiston Estate. The chance to sample the best of Sussex sparkling wine finished the Society’s year on a delicious top note!

The London Academy of Excellence (LAE) is a leading Sixth Form academy located in Stratford, East London.

Established with the vision and commitment of Brighton College’s Principal, Richard Cairns, LAE is proud to have Brighton College as a founding partner. In an area otherwise lacking in good academic options for the bridge from GCSEs to university, LAE provides a crucial opportunity to hundreds of students each year, reserving most of its places for local young people from deprived backgrounds.
