Living On The Edge

September 2020

Club Manager Message Dear Ocean Edge Club Members, When we started this year there was definitely an uncertainty of the upcoming summer, and no one knew what to expect. As we close out the summer season and head into Labor Day Weekend, I believe that summer 2020 exceeded most people’s expectations. The summer months of June – August were met with spectacular weather, which translates into a great summer for golf, tennis, pickleball, water sport recreation, pools and of course, the beach. Member utilization at all of our amenities has increased year over year. Golf experienced a 45% increase in Membership play for July and 22% increase in Membership play for August. Tennis met with similar increases of approximately 27% per month, and that is with the addition of pickleball courts, which realized over 1,000 total players, with slightly more than 50% of those being Members enjoying this new amenity over the course of the summer. The big miss this year as expressed by some Members was the inability to provide social experiences. Even as of today, with the restrictions in place from the Governor’s Office, socials are not feasible or executional. Current limitations for indoor space is 25 people, including staff; outdoor venues can accommodate up to 50 people, including staff. Bars are not permitted and drink service must be accompanied by a prepared food item, per individual. Common platters, passed appetizers, and similar banquet services are not permitted under the current regulations. Group gatherings require masks to be worn while attending the social event. In working with the Advisory Board and addressing the regulations in-place, we have encouraged our Members to enjoy the outdoor restaurant venues throughout the property to meet up with other Members, maintaining tables of 6 or less, as a readily available social opportunity.

Looking at the bright side, unlike most Labor Day Weekends, the summer season may not be over. In fact, we are predicting that we will remain busy through at least the 20th of the September. Many Members have expressed their plans to extend the season on Cape versus returning home. With many schools having a hybrid or remote program, it provides the opportunity for many Members to stay on Cape for an extended period. As such, the following operational updates take place effective Monday, September 7, through Sunday, September 20. Arbor Pool will remain open daily 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Fletcher Pool, both indoor and outdoor, will remain open daily 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Member Sports Club pool will remain open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Bay Pines Outdoor pool will remain open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm * Closing time of the pools may change due to sunset and limited daylight. Similarly, Ocean Terrace, the Beach Bar, the Linx Tavern, and the new Front Lawn restaurant will remain open and available daily. New heaters have been added to the Linx patio, as well as to the Front Lawn Restaurant, to provide additional warmth for the cooler nights of September. I hope you and your family have the opportunity to enjoy these venues throughout the fall season. I hope you and your families have remained safe throughout this COVID summer and have the opportunity to enjoy the Club throughout the fall. We are already looking ahead to 2021, with what we hope to be the “new norm with updated activities, events, and socials! Thank you for being part of the Ocean Edge Club and I look forward to seeing you around the Club! Sincerely, Michael Medeiros Club Manager

Member Relations & Communications It has been so wonderful hearing about all of our Members’ positive experiences at the Club this season. Being at the front desk of the Clubhouse has allowed me to get to know many Members, as well as your friends and family during this unique season, which is my first season at Ocean Edge. I am glad our team has been able to still make this year memorable for you, our Members, albiet different. I would like to direct your attention to a couple changes that have taken place recently on the Club website. On the Member homepage, the Club News and Updates section will now reflect the content of the weekly Friday Club operations email. In the event that a Club correspondence is overlooked via email, Members can now find the update in that section of the website. Furthermore, the Latest News section of the Member homepage will now display any major changes or updates effecting the Club, such as Covid-19 updates. Previously there was some confusion surrounding why there were multiple news sections on the homepage, but with these changes it should be easier to find relevant information in a more organized manner. As a reminder, if there are ever any questions, comments or concerns about anything having to do with membership, please bring them to my attention so I can assist.

Sincerely, Emma Haselton Member Relations & Communications Manager

Agronomy News Here in the Agronomy Department we are welcoming September and trying to forget the hot, humid and dry August we had. Considering the conditions this summer the course has faired well. September has always been a transition point for golf course maintenance. As we continue to condition the course for the remaining play of 2020, we start to prep for 2021. Most of this work comes in the form of cultivation. Verticutting, top-dress and aeration are important building blocks to delivering great course conditions. Our goal with aeration and verticutting is to remove excess amounts of thatch that build up in the soil profile. We also look to incorporate sand into the open channels on certain areas to dilute thatch and help firming up playing surfaces Thatch stops water and nutrients from getting to the roots of the turf plants, thus lowering the accuracy of our chemical and fertility applications. With the amount of rounds being played we would like to ask players to help the Agronomy team. Many man hours are dedicated to fixing divots and repairing ball marks. We always encourage golfers to replace their divot when possible before using the mix supplied. Putting a healthy divot pelt back can start to root back in 2-3 days. When using divot mix the seed germinating can take 10-14 days and 3-4 weeks to full grow in. When fixing ball marks always look to fix two more other than your own. We hope to see you out here this fall!

Sincerely, Craig Sullivan Golf Course Superintendent

On behalf of the MSC staff we really appreciate all the wonderful encouraging comments many Members have shared with us during these challenging times.
