Living On The Edge
May 2020
Club Manager Message Dear Ocean Edge Club Members, As we continue through these unprecedented times, I want to wish you and your family a happy, healthy and safe journey through these days of self-quarantine and “stay at home” orders from the Governor’s office. We look forward to the day we can welcome all of you to the club, once again, and are diligently preparing for that event. Regardless of when the governor ultimately lifts the “stay at home” order, the days of social distancing will likely be with us for some time to come. Hence, for the immediate future, we are asking for your understanding and cooperation in practicing healthy hygiene while adhering to all social distancing guidelines while at the club. This is not solely a staff responsibility but rather a responsibility we all bear. Additionally, those most susceptible individuals should take additional precautionary measures. We anticipate that we will be able to open the club for golf, tennis and other outdoor activities shortly after the current state order expires on May 18. We also believe beaches will remain open and available under social distancing guidelines and expect the pools to open under similar guidelines. Limitations on gatherings will be required at the pools and, in preparation; we have repositioned the pool deck spaces and set lounges according to social distancing guidelines. Additionally, at each pool location, our attendants will be escorting all guests, disinfecting poolside furniture, and reaffirming proper spacing for all those utilizing the pool. Just wanted to let everyone know that we are diligently preparing to reopen all of the club’s facilities in a safe and respectful manner once we have the “green light” from our governor and other regulatory agencies. We also wanted to take this opportunity to communicate our expectations for continued social distancing measures, as well as our commitment to improved sanitation and hygiene protocols going forward. We are excited to welcoming you back to the Club in the very near future. Sincerely, Michael
Member Relations & Communications As a new member of the Ocean Edge team, I am very eager to meet all of our valued Members and bring exciting new elements to the Member experience. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, getting to know all of you has been quite delayed. In an effort to get to know some of you better during this time at home, I have come up with a fun way to learn more about you, our Members, and what you love about the Club at Ocean Edge. One of the first things I was most looking forward to heading into the 2020 season was getting feedback on some of your favorite aspects of the Club. In an effort to do this from home, I invite you to share with me some of your fondest photo memories from past seasons at Ocean Edge. Take a look back at your photo album, and find a few of your favorite pictures featuring yourself, friends, and family enjoying Ocean Edge during better times. Send these photos to my email, emma.haselton@oceanedge.com, and virtually introduce yourself. I’d love to hear what you have all been up to at home, while also putting faces to names. While I look forward to seeing the photos you share, I am even more excited to welcome you all back to a safe and healthy Club environment in the future. Emma
Golf News Going into the 2020 golf season I was thinking the new handicap rules would be the biggest change we will all have to go thru. COVID-19 has created a “new normal as they say and many things going forward will be different. I truly hope that each and everyone of you has been able to stay healthy during these challenging times and when we are officially allowed to open we will be doing our part to ensure you stay that way. As of now our projected opening date will be May 4th at noon. At that time we will be ready with some new ways to make the golf course a safe place. Like many courses we will be keeping the flagsticks in the cups at all times and raising the cup 1/2in above the ground. We will not have the ball washers or rakes on the course and will keeping all the carts clean and sanitized for your use. The goal would be less touch points that we would normally not think about during a round of golf that we have to now. To look at the good of all of this I must say I have enjoyed this extra time with my family and the course is in going to be in great shape when we are able to open back up and I updated the scorecard for this year. I added in our new ratings from MassGolf and created a new look that I hope you will find easy to use when playing our many tee combinations. Stay Safe and I look forward to seeing you all at the Club soon! Brett

Fitness News We all have been affected by the pandemic one way or another. The newss and social media can all be very overwhelming and stressful. WebMD has some great tips on how to manage your stress. • Keep a positive attitude. • Accept that there are events that you cannot control. • Be assertive instead of aggressive. Assert your feelings, opinions, or beliefs instead of becoming angry, defensive, or passive. • Learn and practice relaxation techniques; try meditation, yoga, or tai-chi for stress management. • Exercise regularly. Your body can fight stress better when it is fit. • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals. • Learn to manage your time more effectively. • Set limits appropriately and learn to say no to requests that would create excessive stress in your life. • Make time for hobbies, interests, and relaxation. • Get enough rest and sleep. Your body needs time to recover from stressful events. • Don't rely on alcohol, drugs, or compulsive behaviors to reduce stress. • Seek out social support. Spend enough time with those you enjoy. • Seek treatment with a psychologist or other mental health professional trained in stress management or biofeedback techniques to learn healthy ways of dealing with the stress in your life. I hope you find a few of these helpful and look forward to seeing everyone in person soon! Heidi
Fitness News 600 Calorie Healthy Eating from bbcgoodfood.com 2 fresh tuna steaks, about 175g/6oz each 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 large garlic clove, crushed 1 tbsp chopped rosemary leaves
For the salad 410g can cannellini bean, drained and rinsed 8 cherry tomatoes, quartered ½ small red onion, thinly sliced 50g bag arugula or rocket 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp clear honey
1. Put the tuna in a shallow dish, drizzle over the oil and lemon juice, scatter over the garlic and rosemary. Turn the tuna so it’s well coated. Cover and put in the fridge for 30 minutes (you can leave it for longer if convenient). 2. Tip the beans into a large bowl. Toss in the tomatoes, onion and rocket. Put the oil, lemon juice, mustard, honey and salt and pepper in a screw top jar. Seal and put aside. 3. Heat a cast iron ridged grill pan or frying pan until very hot. Cook the tuna on a moderately high heat for 2 minutes each side – don’t overcook or it will be dry. 4. Shake the dressing. Pour over the salad. Mix. Serve the salad with the tuna on top.
Agronomy News Upon taking the position here at Ocean Edge, my first goal and priority was to repair and update many of the irrigation issues that affected the property. With the completion of our fitting replacement, jockey pump redevelopment/ replacement, and Link 900 Rain Bird communication upgrade we have made great progress this spring. Now that the bigger projects are completed, our attention turns to the details of our irrigation system. With the golf course closed, our main goal is to get our irrigation system as finely tuned as we can so we can turn our attention to other projects and improvements.
Early morning fairway mow on the 4th hole.
The Agronomy team looks forward to welcoming you back to a beautiful course soon. Craig
Even with May around the corner cold temperatures have come back leaving us a heavy frost on the 18th fairway. This weather has a look of late Fall instead of Spring.
The Agronomy staff has been working on the pruning of our flyover conservation areas. Holes 8, 9, and 14 were the areas of pruning. We were able to prune the areas to their specific height in accordance with the orders of conditions. The first 20ft into the area can be pruned to 3 feet, the next twenty feet pruned to 5 feet.
