Living On The Edge

August 2020

Club Manager Message Dear Ocean Edge Club Members, Thus far this season has been far different than what we had pictured in March and April. At the start of the pandemic, many Members were questioning if there was going to be a summer season, and now we are in the mist of one of the most active summer seasons we have had at the Club. Of course, the weather throughout June and July had been spectacular, which was a major contributor to the activity levels that we have experienced. Golf is having the most Member and Member-Guest rounds played since the Club was founded! Similarly, we have had banner days at the beach and do appreciate how many of our Members watch the tide charts and choose to enjoy the beach at low tide periods. Looking ahead, we anticipate August to be similar to July in terms of Member participation and utilization of the Club amenities. Golf, tennis, pickleball, beach and pool operations all remain active and vibrant. The team has been working tirelessly to meet the demands of the Club and have been doing a fantastic job in meeting our Member expectations. However, the state guidelines, being as they are, continue to limit our abilities to provide catering events and socials. Gathering limitations for indoor venues remain at 25 people, including staff, and prohibit buffets, passed or presented appetizers, and bars. Outdoor opportunities will yield a greater gathering capacity and turn out, but the same restrictions apply for food handling service and bars. In meeting with the Advisory Board Social Committee and brainstorming a variety of options, it was ultimately decided that with the restrictions currently in place, we will hold off on scheduling Member socials for now. When Part II of Phase III is released there may be greater opportunity, and certainly when details of Phase IV are announced we will all be in a better position to plan on our operations under the “new normal. In the meantime, I certainly hope that this season has found you and your families safe and healthy. Hopefully you have had some opportunity to enjoy the Club, catch up with friends, and welcome some of our new Members to the Club. I look forward to seeing many of you throughout the month of August to enjoy the rest of the summer season!

Thank you and stay safe, Sincerely, Michael Medeiros Club Manager

Member Relations & Communications Just like this year as a whole, Summer 2020 has flown by at a rapid pace. I’m sure I am not the only one who can’t believe it is already August. While there are still many limitations and restrictions in place to keep everyone safe and healthy, it feels more and more like Summer with each passing day, especially with so many of our Members now here at Ocean Edge. While it is definitely not the Summer we all may have wanted, I am hopeful that our efforts to get creative have brought some smiles to your faces. Following July’s Advisory Board committee meeting and feedback, I have been working diligently to better meet the needs of Members for the remainder of the season. In an effort to better assist tenants who have rented Member-owned properties, I have extended the hours of the Membership desk to include Sundays. The Membership desk hours are now Tuesday through Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 9am-12pm. This should make it easier on tenants who arrive after 6pm on Saturdays. As a reminder, please continue submitting the Sponsored Guest Pass form on oceanedgeclub.com for any tenants you may have. Furthermore, I have been going through the Club website regularly to make sure all of the information posted is relevant and current. Our weekly email communication continues with Golf updates every Wednesday and Club updates every Friday. I hope these recent changes have made it easier for all Members to stay up to date on happenings at the Club. As always, please feel free to reach out or stop by the Membership desk.

Sincerely, Emma Haselton Member Relations & Communications Manager

Agronomy News We continue to fall behind in our annual rainfall amounts as we miss the many rain events that have impacted other parts of the state. The photo on the next page shows an updated drought map from 7/28. This really puts into perspective that even with the rainfall we have had we are very much behind our normal precipitation amounts. With the high humidity and temperatures staying around for long stretches, it puts a lot of stress on the turf. We try to mitigate that stress by decreasing our chemical application intervals. We target 14-day treatments on greens and tees and 21-day treatments of fairways during the season. Due to the increase in stress, we are less likely to extend this interval as we would in the shoulder seasons, and more likely to spray before we reach these days. With this type of weather and high disease pressure it is best to be proactive versus reactive with chemical application timing. We have been fortunate to not have any turf disease outbreaks this far into the season. With the dog days of summer upon us, we continue to scout disease and insect pressures to keep our chemical application programs successful. We hope Mother Natural will be kind to us on the month of August.

Sincerely, Craig Sullivan Golf Course Superintendent

Golf News July is coming to a close with some record heat and we are looking forward to hopefully a little cooler August. August has some great events to play in. We start with our OEWGA Couples event on August 2nd, The Club Championship on the 8th/9th, the OEMGA “The Devil on the 22nd, and for the first time the Couples Club Championship on the 30th. While they are a little different then years past the one thing that does stay the same is the golf. They will all be fun events to play and test your skills along the way. The new Mavrik demos have come in if you are in the market to upgrade your equipment. It has been getting a lot of use on tour and sets up great to the ball. If you are interested in using one or getting fit for a new set please give us a call and we can set up a time to get you fit. OEMGA News The Ocean Edge Men’s Golf Association’s Nahass Matchplay Championship has reached the Final Four. The tournament honors Ronald A. Nahass who was a founding member of OEMGA. He passed suddenly in 2014, and all who knew him miss his charismatic and dynamic presence. The Championship launched in mid-June with 38 players and we now have the Final Four, each representing their bracket beginning with the Semi-finals by August 13th and the Final on Saturday August 15th. Congratulations to Bob Murphy, Bob Sanchez, Dave Keville and Jack Duffy who will battle it out to reach the finals and the coveted Nahass Matchplay Championship. OEMGA Madness began with six Play In matches, the Round of 32, Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. -Jack Duffy Chair, Nahass Matchplay Championship

Tennis & Pickleball News Pickleball continues to be a hit at Ocean Edge now that the new courts are open for play. Stop by the Blueberry Pond Recreational Center to play your first round, participate in a clinic, and learn just why Pickleball continues to be America’s fastest growing sport. Visit the Club calendar to stay up to date on all tennis and pickleball offerings, clinics, and round robins.

Fitness News We all know that 2020 has not been a “normal” workout year. Gyms shutting down or the fear of going to the gym during this pandemic has made home workouts for some the only option. If you are bored with your routine try making a new playlist. Do a search for some off the grid songs that you like, maybe a new artist or DJ. Try a new style of work out for 5 days. Maybe it’s Tabata, or if you have been doing cardio intense workouts try Pilates and Yoga hybrids. Just mix it up for a few days with a new playlist and you may just find that motivation again! Muscle cramps happen when your muscles tense up and you can’t relax them. While painful, usually you can treat them yourself. Exercise, dehydration, and lack of certain vitamins or minerals are common causes. One way to stop cramps is to stretch or massage your muscles and to eat enough of these key nutrients: potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium. They’re called electrolytes, and you can find them in the following foods: bananas, sweet potatoes, beans, and lentils. Bananas are a good source of potassium and also have magnesium and calcium. Sweet potatoes have six times the calcium of bananas and give you potassium and magnesium. Beans and Lentils are good for magnesium as well. One cup of lentils can give you 70 mg of magnesium; however one cup of cooked black beans has 120 mg of magnesium. So, as WebMD says “EAT THEM TO BEAT THEM” when it comes to muscle cramps!
